En kvantitativ studie genomfördes med syftet att undersöka i vilken utsträckning psykologiska strategier används av ryttare samt om det finns några eventuella skillnader i användandet av psykologiska strategier på träning och tävling och i mellan grenarna inom ridsporten. Vidare undersöktes det om det finns ett samband mellan användandet av psykologiska strategier och upplevd prestation. För att mäta detta användes en svensk version av självskattningsinstrumentet Test of Performance Strategies (TOPS). 185 ryttare deltog i studien, varav 107 stycken var dressyrryttare, 39 stycken var hoppryttare och 38 stycken deltog inom en övrig gren inom ridsporten. Resultatet visade en signifikant skillnad i användandet av psykologiska strategier mellan träning- och tävlingssammanhang, där strategierna användes mer i träningssammanhang. Resultatet visade även en signifikant skillnad i användandet av psykologiska strategier mellan grenarna i ridsport, där ryttarna inom hoppning och annan gren visade sig använda sig av mer automatisering på tävling än ryttarna inom dressyr. Dessutom fanns ett positivt signifikant samband mellan upplevd grad av prestationsnivå på tävling och användandet av psykologiska strategier. Samt ett ytterligare ett positivt signifikant samband mellan upplevd grad av prestationsnivå på träning och användandet av psykologiska strategier. Slutsatsen kunde dras att populationen använder mer psykologiska strategier i träningssammanhang samt de upplever att en hög grad av användande av psykologiska strategier resulterar i en upplevd hög grad av prestationsnivå.

A quantitative study has been conducted with the aim of investigating the extent to which psychological strategies are used by riders as well as whether there were any differences in the use of psychological strategies during training and competition and between the disciplines of the equestrian sport. Furthermore, it examined whether there was a connection between the use of psychological strategies and experienced achievement-level. To measure this a Swedish version of the self-assessment instrument Test of Performance Strategies (TOPS) was used. 185 equestrians participated in the study, whence 107 of them competed in dressage, 39 of them competed in jumping and 38 of them competed in another discipline. The result showed a significant difference in the use of psychological strategies in training and competition, where the psychological strategies was used more in the training sessions. The result also showed a significant difference in the use of psychological strategies between the disciplines, it showed that the equestrians who jumped and participated in another discipline used more automaticity in competition than dressage riders. In addition, there was a positive significant relationship between the degree of perceived performance on competition and the use of psychological strategies. ▼ Onion bulbs cultivated in the Southern Hemisphere for counter-season, Northern Hemisphere markets must be of high quality at the point of presentation to the consumer. Consistently achieving this requires an in-depth understanding of the interaction between pre- and post-harvest factors that affect bulb quality and storage life. This industry-focussed study specifically investigated key factors that affect storage life (sprouting) in Tasmanian, Australia, grown bulbs. These factors were identified in consultation with industry and a review of the scientific literature. Onion bulb production in Tasmania, a cool-temperate region, is a low cost production system that takes advantage of the region’s long dry summers that enable bulbs to be lifted out of the ground (termed “lifting”) prior to complete canopy senescence and field curing in windrows. The timing of lifting based on plant growth and development events associated with lodged crop canopies (termed “tops-down”) was one of the pre-harvest factors investigated in this study; 80% tops-down is used commercially as an indicator of optimal bulb development for lifting. Internal sprout growth and respiration rate during long term storage were generally lowest in bulbs lifted at ca 90% tops-down and increased with early or late lifting treatments. These data support the recommendation that to optimise bulbs for long term storage, lifting should be changed from 80% to ca 90% tops-down. While 80% tops-down is used by industry as a marker to determining time of lifting, forecasting this event to schedule lifting operations is difficult, because it is not known how to predict the time at which foliage lodging begins, or the length of time to 80% tops-down. Changes in the mechanical properties of pseudostem bases were evaluated using a custom-built tool, which measured stem ovalisation under transverse load as a proxy for susceptibility to structural failure via Brazier buckling. Softening of tissues at the pseudostem base was found to precede and govern canopy collapse within and among cultivars. Monitoring of this softening provided a pre-lodging indicator of the development progression to pseudostem failure (tops-down) independent of genotype and environment. Post-harvest factors investigated include the effect of mechanical impacts during handling on bulb respiration rate, weight loss and sprout growth. Cured bulbs from different crops sampled during commercial grading were found to have different respiration rates prior to handling, demonstrating the interaction between pre- and post-harvest factors. In subsequent controlled impact experiments, higher respiration rates and faster sprout growth were recorded when bulbs were impacted on the base plate, and also with greater impact magnitudes. Minimising the force of impacts, and avoiding impacts to the base plate are thus recommended as best practice for the handling of onions intended for long term storage and the sensitivity of bulbs to impacts in future studies should control impact location. Vid låga mängder av DNA, vilket det ofta är vid forensiska prover, är en lyckad DNA-analys beroende av ett effektivt DNA-extraktionsprotokoll. Bland flera kommersiellt tillgängliga extraktionsmetoder för DNA har tidigare studier visat att Chelex 100 resin, som idag används på Nationellt Forensiskt Centrum i Linköping, är en snabb och enkel metod utan toxiska ämnen, långa väntetider eller större kostnader och som även ger ett högt DNA-utbyte. På teknisk mikrobiologi i Lund har olika chelex-baserade protokoll för spårsäkring och extraktion tagits fram för att optimera det aktuella protokollet på Nationellt Forensiskt Centrum. I detta arbete kombinerades spårsäkringsteknik och DNA-extraktionsprotokoll från tidigare studier med olika rör och tops, med syftet att i bästa fall generera ett protokoll som är optimalt för de vanligast förekommande brottsplatsproverna. I resultatet observerades högre DNA-utbyte med reducerade volymer lyseringsbuffert, vilket användning av rör-i-rörsystem tillät. När rör-i-rörsystem sedan kombinerades med extraktionsprotokoll innehållande SDS, observerades en ökning i DNA-utbytet. När dessa två faktorer vidare kombinerades med en tops vars skaft kan klippas rakt av ökade DNA-utbytet ytterligare. Ett byte från mikrofugrör, som används på Nationellt Forensiskt Centrum idag, till ett rör-i-rörsystem reducerar lyseringsvolymen från ca. 600 µl till 200 µl vilket är en avgörande faktor för effektivare extraktioner.

When handling low amounts of DNA, which often is the case with forensic samples, a successful DNA analysis is dependent on an effective DNA extraction protocol. Among many commercially available extraction methods for DNA, previous research has proved Chelex 100 resin, which is used at National Forensic Center in Linkoping, to be a quick and simple method without toxic substances, long waiting time or large costs, which in addition provides a high DNA exchange. At Applied Microbiology, Lund´s University, different chelex-based protocols for sampling and DNA extraction have been developed to optimize the present protocol at the National Forensic Center. In this study, sampling techniques and DNA extraction from previous studies was further combined with different tubes and swabs with the aim to, in best case, generate a protocol that is optimal for the most common crime scene samples. The results showed improved DNA yields with less extraction volume, which the tube in tube system made possible. When tube in tube system was combined with extraction protocols containing SDS, a higher DNA yield was observed. When these two factors were further combined with a cotton swab, whose shaft can be cut straight of, the DNA yield improved even more. A change from microfuge tubes, which is used at the National Forensic Center, to tube in tube system, the lysis volume could be reduced from approximately 600 µl to 200 µl which is a deciding factor for higher DNA yield.

Cette thèse a pour but la recherche de Nouvelle Physique dans les événements à quatre quarks top en utilisant les données collectées dans les collisions proton-proton par l'expérience ATLAS au LHC. L'ensemble des données correspond à celui enregistré pendant tout 2011 à √s = 7 TeV et une partie de l'année 2012 à √s = 8 TeV. L'analyse est concentrée sur un état final avec deux leptons (des électrons et des muons) avec la même charge électrique. Cette signature est expérimentalement privilégiée puisque la présence de deux leptons avec le même signe dans l'état final permet de réduire le bruit du fond qui vient des processus du Modèle Standard. Les résultats sont interprétés dans le contexte d'une théorie effective à basse énergie, qui suppose que la Nouvelle Physique peut se manifester à basse énergie comme une interaction de contact à quatre tops droits. Dans ce contexte, cette analyse permet de prouver un type de théorie au delà du Modèle Standard qui, à basse énergie, peut se manifester de cette manière. Les bruits du fond pour cette recherche ont été estimés en utilisant des échantillons simulés et des techniques axées sur les données. Différentes sources d'incertitudes systématiques ont été considérées. La sélection finale des événements a été optimisée en visant à minimiser la limite supérieure attendue sur la section efficace de production des quatre tops si aucun événement de signal n'est trouvé. La région du signal a été ensuite examinée à la recherche d'un excès d'événement en comparaison avec le bruit du fond prévu. Aucun excès d'événement n'a été observé, et la limite supérieure observée sur la section efficace de production de quatre quarks top a été calculée. Ceci a permis de calculer la limite supérieure sur la constante de couplage C=2 du modèle. Une limite supérieure sur la section efficace de production de quatre tops dans le Modèle Standard a été aussi calculée dans l'analyse a √s = 8 TeV. En plus de l'analyse physique du signal de quatre tops, des études concernant le système d'étalonnage LASER du calorimètre Tile ont été présentées. Ces études sont liées au système des photodiodes utilisé pour mesurer l'intensité de la lumière dans le système LASER.

This thesis presents the search for New Physics in events with four top quarks using the data collected in proton-proton collisions by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to the one taken during all 2011 at √s = 7 TeV and a part of 2012 at √s = 8 TeV. The analysis focuses on a final state with two leptons (electrons and muons) with the same electric charge. This signature is experimentally favored since the presence of two same-sign leptons in the final state allows to reduce the background coming from Standard Model (SM) processes. The results are interpreted in the context of a low energy effective field theory, which assumes that New Physics at low energy can manifest itself as a four right-handed top contact interaction. ▼ Biomass is expected to play an important role in the future because biomass can be gasified to produce syngas for the sustainable production of electricity, chemicals, and fuels. The research focus of this thesis was to provide a more fundamental understanding of four important parameters that affect biomass char gasification kinetics in a gasifier - pyrolysis conditions, biomass composition and inorganic content, interaction between two biomasses when co-fed together, and the gasifying media. The first study showed that higher pyrolysis temperature and higher residence time in a pressurized entrained flow reactor led to a decrease in char gasification reactivity. Furthermore, a complex char reactivity dependence on pyrolysis pressure is observed with minimum char reactivity at 15 bar (at 800 °C – 26 s – 5 to 20 bar). The second study correlated the reactivity of different types of biomass chars with its active surface area measured by CO2 chemisorption. This empirical correlation can be used for predicting the gasification reactivity of different biomass chars. The third study demonstrated that co-gasification of mixtures of Brazilian bagasse and cane trash was not additive. It was found that co-gasification of these two biomasses led to lower than expected gasification performance due to potassium redistribution between chars. The last study showed that the active sites for steam and CO2 gasification are likely to be the same. However, as the char gasification progresses in pure steam, the active sites are likely to be blocked by in-situ hydrogen product formation. It was demonstrated that product inhibition by hydrogen led to a different gasification reactivity profile in steam compared to CO2 during gasification of potassium containing bagasse char. ▼ Burraga Swamp is a small enclosed basin at 985 m altitude in Barrington Tops, in the Eastern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. It lies in the midst of a Nothofagus moorei cool temperate rainforest, which is at its southern limits here. The swamp is close to the boundaries between temperate rainforest, subtropical rainforest, sclerophyll forest and sub-alpine formations and may be a sensitive recorder of past changes in the vegetation.The palynology and the sediments have been studied to a depth of 6.5 metres and were dated with eleven 14C dates. The base of the sediment is about 40,000 years old. The results showed the following: From 40,000-30,000 years BP, Burraga was a lake with a very slow rate of deposition of fine grained sediments and flourishing aquatic/swamp vegetation. The dryland vegetation was an open or sparsely treed grassland/herbfield. From 30,000-21,000 years BP, the dryland vegetation remained much the same, but the aquatic vegetation disappeared. From 21,000-17,000 years BP, sandy sediments were deposited at an accelerated rate in a relatively shallow lake, culminating in a layer of gravelly sand. The vegetation was a treeless grassland between about 21,000 and 15,000 years BP. After 17,000 years BP, the rate of sediment accumulation slowed and after 15,000 years, some mesic elements appeared. Dicksonia antarctica became prominent between about 13,000 and 12,000 years BP and Nothofagus was consistently present after about 11,500 years BP. Peat deposition started about 6,500 years BP. By 6,000 years BP the cool temperate rainforest was fully developed, remaining on the site until the present. These changes suggest that the climate at 40,000 years BP was drier than the present, becoming drier and reaching maximum aridity about 17,000 years BP, when temperatures were also at their lowest. Subsequently, the temperature increased and around 15,000 years BP the climate became wetter. Maximum moistures and temperatures were reached between about 9,000 and 5,000 years BP. The climate then varied until it reached the present. Burraga extends the record of treeless vegetation over most of southeastern Australia, during the last glacial maximum, to more northerly localities than previously known.

Studying the APPs of morross and mountains in geoenvironmental analysis perspective, propsta this research was conducted in the portion north of the municipality of Guarulhos (SP), is an analytical contributing to compreensãodos concepts involved and elucidation of technical limitations with the complication in control land use, using the method of CETESB - Decision Board No. 148/2010/L - to perform calculations for uniform hills of the state are Paulo.O obejetivo was the main IDENTIFICATION and analysis of permanent preservation areas on top of hills municipalities of Guarulhos, SP, in order to subsidize planning and environmental management. To obtain the analysis used the ArcGIS 9.3 software, data bases vetorais project scale 1:25,000, the cartographic data vetorais Prefectural Hall of Guarulhos, 1:25:00 scale: letter EMPLASA scale 1:10,000; pictures Aeras in 1:10,000 scales. In the study area analysis resulted in the recognition of 158 elevations, and of these 98 are features of APPs hilltop, analysis of land use in neighborhoods and producing maps indicative of those elevations, features hills and hills of APPs

No Brasil as áreas ambientais são protegidas através de uma série de instrumentos legais. As áreas de preservação (APPs) estabelicidas pelo Código Florestal Brasileiro e a Resolução CONAMA303 de 2002, são as mais polêmicas das áreas protegidas. Áreas formadas por relevos e morros e cumeadas. Estudar as APPs de morross e montanhas na perspectiva da análise geoambiental, propsta nesta pesquisa foi realizada na porção Norte do municipio de Guarulhos (SP), é uma analítico que contribui para compreensãodos conceitos em questão e elucidação das limitações técnicas com a plicação no controle do uso terra, utilizando o método da CETESB - Decisão de Diretoria n 148/2010/L - para realização uniforme de cálculos para morros do estado de são Paulo.O obejetivo principal foi a indentificação e análise das áreas de preservação permanente de topo de morros no municipios de Guarulhos, SP, a fim de subsidiar o planejamento e a gestão ambiental. Para obtenção da análise utilizou-se o software ARcGIS 9.3; dados vetorais do projeto bases em escala 1:25.000; dados vetorais da base cartográfica da Prefeitura de Municipal de Guarulhos, escala 1:25.00: carta de EMPLASA na escala 1:10.000; fotos aéras na escalas 1:10.000. Na área de estudo a análise resultou no reconhecimento de 158 elevações, sendo que destas feições 98 são APPs de topo de morro, análise do uso do solo nos bairros e na produção de mapas indicativos das referidas elevações, feições de morros e das APPs de morros.

Le géothermomètre Δ47 est basé sur la relation entre l’abondance des liaisons 13C–18O des carbonates et la température de calcification. Ce proxy contourne potentiellement les limites des autres thermomètres (δ18O, Mg/Ca) pour reconstruire les paléo-températures des océans, expliquant son développement exponentiel depuis dix ans. Cette thèse teste pour la première fois le potentiel et les limites de la thermométrie Δ47 sur les coccolithes, des nannofossiles calcaires produits par des organismes calcifiants dans la zone photique. Ces biominéraux calcitiques et ubiquistes constituent une part importante de l’archive sédimentaire. Des cultures in vitro nous ont permis d’établir que trois espèces de coccolithes actuelles enregistrent la même relation Δ47 – T que la calcite inorganique, alors qu'elles présentent de très larges effets vitaux en δ18O (±5‰). Nous concluons que ces espèces de coccolithes d'importance géologique ne présentent pas d’effets vitaux en Δ47. Nous avons ensuite appliqué le Δ47 à l’étude des sédiments enregistrant l’événement d’anoxie océanique du Toarcien (–183 Ma) au cours duquel les reconstructions de températures restent encore ambigües, notamment du fait de la méconnaissance de la composition isotopique en oxygène de l’eau de mer. Sur la base des données Δ47 acquises, nous proposons des températures élevées (de l’ordre de 36°C), mais restant relativement stables sur l'intervalle d'étude. En couplant ces températures aux données de δ18O des carbonates, nous suggérons une variation importante du δ18O de l'eau de mer dans le Bassin de Paris lors de la mise en place des faciès black shales. Enfin, sur des sédiments pélagiques subactuels, l’une des espèces étudiées présente des déséquilibres isotopiques en Δ47 non observés en culture et explicables par d’autres paramètres environnementaux comme l’intensité lumineuse. The Δ47 geothermometer relies on the relationship between the 13C–18O abundance in carbonateand temperature of calcification. This proxy has the potential to overcome limitations of other thermometers(δ18O, Mg/Ca) to reconstruct oceanic paleotemperatures. This thesis evaluates for the first time the potentialand the limitations of the Δ47 thermometry of the coccoliths, the calcareous nannofossils produced byorganisms calcifying in the photic zone. ▼ A new method of in situ extraction of alcohols from fermentation broth was investigated. The extraction method exploited the latent advantages of the non-equilibrium phase interaction of the fluid system in the flash tank to effectively recover the alcohol. Carbon dioxide gas ranging from 4.2L/min to 12.6L/min was used to continuously strip 2 and 12% (v/v) ethanol solution in a fermentor with a recycle. Ethanol and water in the stripped gas was recovered by compressing and then flashing into a flash tank that was maintained at 5 to 70bar and 5 to 55 °C where two immiscible phases comprising CO2-rich phase (top layer) and H2O-rich phase (bottom layer) were formed. The H2O-rich bottom layer was collected as the Bottoms. The CO2-rich phase was continuously throttled producing a condensate (Tops) as a result of the Joule-Thompson cooling effect. The total ethanol recovered from the extraction scheme was 46.0 to 80% for the fermentor containing 2% (v/v) ethanol and 57 to 89% for the fermentor containing 12% (v/v) ethanol. The concentration of ethanol in the Bottoms ranged from 8.0 to 14.9 %(v/v) for the extraction from the 2 %(v/v) ethanol solution and 40.0 to 53.8 %(v/v) for the 12% (v/v) fermentor ethanol extraction. The Bottoms concentration showed a fourfold increase compared to the feed. The ethanol concentration of the Tops were much higher with the highest at approx. 90% (v/v) ethanol, however the yields were extremely low. Compression work required ranged from 6.4 to 20.1 MJ/kg ethanol recovered from the gas stream in the case of 12% (v/v) ethanol in fermentor. The energy requirement for the 2% (v/v) extraction was 84MJ/kg recovered ethanol. The measured Joule-Thompson cooling effect for the extraction scheme was in the range of 10 to 20% the work of compressing the gas. The lowest measured throttle valve temperature was -47 °C at the flash tank conditions of 70bar and 25 °C. Optimization of the extraction scheme showed that increasing the temperature of the flash tank reduced the amount of ethanol recovered. Increasing the pressure of the flash tank increased the total ethanol recovered but beyond 45bar it appeared to reduce the yield. The 12.6L/min carbon dioxide flow rate favored the high pressure(70bar) extraction whiles 4.2L/min appeared to favor the low pressure(40bar) extraction. The studies showed that the extraction method could potentially be used to recover ethanol and other fermentation products. ▼ Examines the habitat, microhabitat and the calling behaviour of the Krombit tinkerfrog, which is a critically endangered myobatrachid frog endemic to the rainforest gullies of Kroombit Tops in south-east Queensland.. Taudactylus pleione (the Kroombit tinkerfrog) is a critically endangered myobatrachid frog endemic to the rainforest gullies of Kroombit Tops, an elevated plateau in southeast Queensland, Australia. Its numbers have declined in recent times, particularly at the higher altitude plateau streams. Efforts to conserve the species, including a proposal to commence captive breeding, are hampered by inadequate knowledge of the species' habitat requirements and conditions required for reproduction. This project investigated the characteristics of occupied rainforest patches and streams, microhabitat and structure of male call sites and influence of climatic variables on male calling activity. Habitat characteristics of rainforestlwet sclerophyll patches and streams used by T. pleione were compared to randomly selected unoccupied patches and streams. Callsites and call-perches used by male T. pleione were compared to available potential callsites and perches. Daily calling activity of male T. pleione was analysed in relation to climatic and other variables. Patches of notophyll rainforest and adjacent wet sclerophyll forest were mapped from aerial photography. The habitat and spatial patterns of ten patches occupied by T pleione and ten randomly selected unoccupied patches were compared. Within these, habitat and microhabitat data were compared for seven occupied and eight unoccupied streams. The habitat of T.pleione can be described as first-order streams at Kroombit Tops originating above 825 m within patches of simple notophyll gully vine forest (Regional Ecosystem 12.12.1) spanning more than 168 m of elevation, that are generally greater than 20 ha in area with an area-perimeter ratio of 73 or higher and a catchment of over 56 ha, no more than 207 m from the nearest occupied patch. Patches of less than 20 ha may be occupied provided they have patch roundness index values of 0.68 or higher. Streams have generally less than 7.9% crevice cover and 'large pebbles' (2.1- 6.0 cm) occurred at a frequency of 30% or more. Data were collected from call-sites used by male T. pleione for advertisement calling and from randomly selected paired locations within the same gully. Occupied call-sites had significantly higher rock and crevice cover, but significantly lower slope and direct summer radiation values. Males were significantly more likely to be found using rockpiles than other call-perch structures available at the site. Preliminary analysis of the acoustic reflectivity of the call-perches used by T. pleione males, based on the density of their component materials, showed they were significantly more reflective than potential call-perches. ▼ Background: What are mental methods, and what kind of utility do you have for using these techniques? Team player and individual athletes are different from the beginning by the way they do there sports, but is there similarities or is it only differences between them. These two sports that will be presented are track and field and basketball and there use of mental methods.Intention: Investigate whether there is any difference between the uses of mental techniques in an individual sport than a team sport?Method: To collect data, TOPS (Test of performance strategies) written by Thomas, Murphy & Hardy (1999) questionnaire form will be the basis for the questions. TOPS is a questionnaire with 10 mental techniques, this study will focus on three of them, goal setting, visualization and pep-talk. To secure that the answers would be as properly answered as possible, were paper questionnaire given personally to every participants.Result: Mental techniques are used by athletes in both team sports and individual sports; however, there is no significant difference between the two athlete groups. The results in this study showed that goalsetting were almost used the same amount between individual athletes and team players. It was however a bigger different between the use of pep-talk and visualization, where team players used more pep-talk while individual athletes were using more the visualization technique. During a comparison between the different sports, the results showed that basketball players in this study were using more pep-talk, while the track and field, and mostly the throwers were using more of visualization.Discussion: The results that have been acknowledge in this study shows that all three mental techniques are used by both individual and team players. My personal thoughts were that the results would give opposite results about visualization and pep-talk between team sports and individual sports. The reason behind these results might be because of that team players, and by that mostly basketball players, have more use of visualize a special technique situation, like throwing a ball, while an individual athlete, in this study track and field athletes, have more use of pep-talk both before and during a race, because they might need more motivational speech to finish the race.

▼ Sugar beet leaves (SBL), which are a side stream of the sugar beets cultivation, are currently left unexploited after sugar beets have been harvested. The general aim of this thesis was to study the biorefinery of SBL, with a special focus on the isolation of proteins. To reach this aim the research was divided into three sub-aims: 1) to determine whether there is variability in the chemical composition of the leaves due to pre-harvest conditions (plant age), 2) to evaluate the variability of the techno-functionality of leaf soluble protein concentrate (LSPC) due to system conditions and 3) to extend current product and process synthesis approaches to enable the design of biorefining process. To address the first aim, SBL collected at different time points were used. Despite a small variation in the chemical composition of the leaves of different plant ages, a large effect of the plant age on the quality of LSPC was observed. In particular, LSPC from old plants was brown (indicative of polyphenol oxidase - PPO - activity), whereas LSPC from young plants was yellow. Based on these data, samples extracted with sodium disulfite (to inhibit PPO-mediated browning) were used for further experiments. The obtained LSPC consisted mainly of protein (69.3% w/w db (N∙5.23)) and carbohydrates (5.1% w/w db; half of which was charged carbohydrates). The main protein present in LSPC was Rubisco. The emulsion and foam properties of LSPC were studied as a function of protein concentration (Cp), pH and ionic strength (I). The minimal Cp of LSPC needed to form a stable emulsion (Ccr) was comparable to that of other widely used plant proteins, such as soy protein isolate. A critical ζ-potential (ζcr ~ 11 mV) was identified, below which flocculation occurs. At pH 8.0 and high I (0.5 M) the Ccr was higher than at low I (0.01 M), which relates to a higher protein adsorbed amount at the interface (Γmax). The foam ability (FA) of LSPC increased with Cp at all conditions tested. The FA was related to the soluble and not to the total Cp in the bulk. Interestingly, the minimal Cp; i.e.CcrFA needed to reach highest FA was constant as a function of pH. At high I (0.5 M) LSPC had higher FA than at low I (0.01 M), which was related to the faster adsorption of proteins at the interface. A minimum Cp was required to form stable foams. At pH 3.0 and 5.0 the foam stability of LSPC was higher than at pH 8.0. This was postulated to be due to formation of aggregates (between proteins or between proteins and charged carbohydrates). From these data it was shown that the techno-functional properties of LSPC could be linked to the molecular and interfacial properties of the dominant proteins in the concentrates. Thus, predictions for the techno-functional properties of impure systems, such as LSPC, can be made using only the known molecular properties of the dominant proteins and a small set of experiments. Oförmåga att minska utsläppen av växthusgaser i tillräckligt takt för att undvika en alltför kraftig global uppvärmning har motiverat framtagandet av tekniker med potential att minska mängden koldioxid i atmosfären. En av dessa tekniker är bioenergi med koldioxidlagring (Bio-energy with carbon capture and storage, BECCS), där koldioxid avskiljs från punktkällor med biogena utsläpp och lagras i geologiska strukturer. Även biokol tillsatt till jordbruksmark har potential att bidra till negativa utsläpp. Både svenska och internationella strategier inkluderar negativa utsläpp för att uppfylla förpliktelserna i Parisavtalet. För att säkerhetsställa att teknikerna lever upp till potentialen krävs ett livscykelperspektiv där klimatpåverkan beräknas på systemnivå. En livscykelanalys utfördes, där klimatpåverkan vid utnyttjande av grenar och toppar (GROT) från den svenska skogsindustrin beräknades för teknikerna BECCS och biokol tillsatt till jordbruksmark. Teknikerna jämfördes med ett referensscenario där GROT förbränns i ett kraftvärmeverk för att producera el och fjärrvärme utan omhändertagande av koldioxid som bildas vid förbränning. Resultaten visar att BECCS har potentialen att bidra med negativa utsläpp på mellan -168 och -666 kg CO2-ekvivalenter/ ton GROT torrsubstans (TS). Då GROT-skörden ökar till 80% av den årliga avverkade arealen skog i Sverige och kombineras med gallring, resulterar 666 kg CO2-ekvivalenter/ ton GROT TS, i 4,4 miljoner ton CO2-ekvivalenter per år. Detta motsvarar 25,8 % av klimatpåverkan från inrikestransporter i Sverige år 2016. Nettoutsläppen från biokol tillsatt till jordbruksmarker, varierar mellan 934 och -344 kg CO2-ekvivalenter/ ton GROT TS. Då GROT-skörden ökar till 80% av den avverkade arealen skog i Sverige och kombineras med gallring, resulterar 344 kg CO2-ekvivalenter/ton GROT TS i 2,2 miljoner ton CO2-ekvivalenter. Detta motsvarar 13,3 % av klimatpåverkan från inrikes transporter i Sverige år 2016. Båda teknikerna har potential att åstadkomma nettonegativa växthusgasutsläpp, men resultaten är beroende av klimatpåverkan från ersättande el- och fjärrvärmeproduktion.

The inability to achieve sufficient reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has led to the development of techniques with potential to achieve negative greenhouse gas emissions. One of these techniques is called Bio-energy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), where carbon dioxide is captured from biogenic point sources with biogenic emissions and stored underground. Biochar applied to farmland is another technique with potential to achieve negative greenhouse gas emissions. ▼ Anaerobic digestion is a microbially mediated process occurring in nature in the absence of oxygen and other non-carbonaceous electron acceptors. The majority of the carbon of the organic matter degraded in the process is transformed into carbon dioxide and methane. Most of the energy potential of the degraded material is conserved in the methane, thus providing a renewable energy carrier, which can be converted into heat and/or electricity, or upgraded for use as a vehicle fuel. The remaining undigested, recalcitrant lignocellulosics and mineralised nutrients constitute an excellent biofertiliser. Compared to using undigested organic material as fertiliser, the nutrient content of the digestate is more readily taken up by the plants. In addition, the lower levels of easily degradable carbon sources and nitrogen in the soil lead to reduced emission of greenhouse gases and nutrients to the air and water. The lignocellulosics of the digestate maintain the humic content of the soil, which is crucial for the long-term productivity of the soil. Anaerobic digestion of the organic waste fractions and agricultural residuals is a sustainable way to control and direct all the flows of recycled nutrients in society without risking excessive losses. Anaerobic digestion would enable the energy potential of agricultural crop residues such as sugar beet tops and ley crops to be harnessed. Sweden is so sparsely populated that full utilisation of this potential (11 TWh/yr) by conventional centralised slurry-based technology is difficult. In addition, process disturbances in the form of crust formation make operation more costly and lower methane yields may result. It appears that simple but effective high-solids reactor systems have a better chance of being economically viable on farm-scale (50-500 kW). The first part of this study shows that using straw beds improves the process performance in high-solids, anaerobic, stratified bed digesters by shortening the start-up phase of sequential fed-batch operations, and by enhancing the rate and extent of anaerobic digestion. After a non-feeding stabilisation period of the straw bed, the priming straw bed functions both as a particle filter and a microbial carrier. Methane yields from the sugar beet tops fed to pilot- and laboratory-scale equipment ranged between 0.33 and 0.39 m3/kg volatile solids at average solids retention times of 11 to 39 days. In the second part of this study, calculations on the economy of farm-scale digestion of a mixture of wheat straw and sugar beet tops were performed, assuming that the biogas was converted into heat or combined heat and electrical power, or upgraded to vehicle fuel. Among the three different reactor designs tested, the stratified bed digester was found to be the most competitive. However, the scale and utilisation rate of the equipment were too low to achieve reference case unit costs that were comparable to those of commercially available energy carriers.
