This work focuses on the study of silicon nanowires made by a top-down approach. The context of the study is the miniaturisation of the components and the understanding of the transport in 1D systems. Two fabrication approaches are studied : AFM lithography (Atomic Force Microscope) and e-beam lithography. The latter being more reproducible, the final devices are fabricated by this technique using a SOI substrate and multiple steps of etching and metallization.Transport characterization of the Si nanowires allows us to highlight a depleted area at the interface Si/native SiO2. Using nanowires with different widths and lengths, we can determine the depletion width, the surface state density as well as the doping level of the nanowires. The evolution of the nanowires resistance with temperature is also investigated, showing a dependence associated with surface phonons scattering. In the last chapter, three applications are described : a decoder, a current switch and a biosensor. The use of a local etching allows the modulation of the conduction band of the nanowires, opening the way to build a decoder using two local gates. Crossbar structures, where lateral gates which can derive the current in the di_erent branches, lead to the fabrication of a current switch. Finally, thanks to the large surface to volume ratio in these structures, the…

▼ The emergence of metamaterials has expanded the understanding of materials and their associated functionalities beyond the scope of naturally occurring substances. By properly engineering the electric and magnetic resonances of meta-atoms, which have a length scale smaller than the incident wavelength, novel artificial materials can be constructed. This research investigates novel optical metamaterials that are designed and fabricated with optimized subwavelength nanostructures and properly chosen constituent materials to meet user-specified criteria. Both
top-
down and bottom-up integration techniques were developed to explore the palette of materials and nanostructures that can be accessed. First, precisely defined subwavelength nanostructures fabricated using conventional
top-
down techniques were exploited to synthesize a metamaterial absorber, metamaterial waveplates, and a dielectric magnetic mirror. A single-layer metal nanostructure array that had been optimized by genetic algorithm was demonstrated to achieve near-ideal absorptivity from 1.77 μm to 4.86 μm and over incidence angles up to 45. The performance of the fabricated absorber was verified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. A half-wave plate and a quarter-wave plate that exhibit polarization conversion ratios and reflectivity greater than 92% from 640 nm to 1290 nm with incident angles up to 40 were investigated. A Mie resonance-based amorphous silicon nanoresonator array was designed, resulting in a lossless magnetic mirror at 1 m with near unity reflectivity and zero reflection phase. The fabricated waveplates and magnetic mirror were characterized with custom-built measurement setups, and the results show excellent agreement with the design targets. Secondly, an alternative hybrid
top-
down and bottom-up integrated technique was developed to increase the range of materials and nanostructures beyond those available when using conventional
top-
down techniques and to synthesize optical metamaterials with reconfigurable structures/functionalities. A directed self-assembly strategy was investigated using an applied electric field to deterministically assemble pre-synthesized nanoparticles into predefined locations and to modulate the patterned structures. Based on this approach, reconfigurable two-dimensional ordered gold nanowire lattices with AC frequency-dependent lattice spacing were demonstrated. Electric field simulations and electric force calculations were performed to understand the formation of the lattices. Finally, a simplified electrical equivalent resistor and capacitor (RC) model was developed to explain the observed frequency dependent periodicity change.

▼ While liquid chromatography dominates in the
separation stage of proteomics studies, capillary electrophoresis
is a valuable alternative and provides an orthogonal separation
mode. It has proved its usefulness in bottom-up proteomics by
generating complementary peptide identities. In this thesis, I
present the applications of CZE-ESI-MS/MS in
top-

Capillary zone electrophoresis lends good resolving power to
proteoforms with minor sequence variations or PTMs, which often
have similar hydrophobicities but different charges. Here I apply
this system to characterize secretome from

marinum, demonstrate improve sequence coverage with
combined fragmentation of HCD and AI-ETD, separate the heavy chains
and light chains from reduced mAbs, and finally characterize
proteins and proteoforms from yeast with prefractionation by RPLC.
This work demonstrates the ability of CZE separating proteins and
the potential for CZE-ESI-MS/MS as a platform for characterizing

▼ Given the key role of integral membrane proteins as transporters, channels, and signal transducers, it is necessary to understand their function and characteristics. Interestingly, approximately 30% of all proteins are membrane proteins, but there are very few fully characterized membrane proteins. This disparity is due to the practical problems of working with membrane proteins, specifically difficulties with expressing, solubilizing, and purifying. Thus, we have designed a simplified way to express membrane proteins using E coli. and purify them using ion exchange column chromatography followed by size exclusion chromatography. This purification technique results in concentrated fractions containing a maximum of four membrane proteins each which allows for easier analysis. The analysis of these endogenous proteins was performed using native
top down mass spectrometry in hopes of identifying the proteins in the mixture and to identify their post translational modifications. I was able to find the mass of certain membrane proteins, but I was unable to analyze the MS2 spectra from these proteins. This is due to the fact that native
top down mass spectrometry of larger membrane proteins can produce complex spectra that become difficult to analyze and match with a database given the current available software. This study gives an overview on the complexities of collecting and analyzing data from a mixture of unknown membrane proteins.

▼ Recent work on the control of attention has focused on automatic influences of working memory representations on the guidance of attention. In this work, I present three studies questioning the auotmaticity of working memory guidance of attention.
In the first study, I examine whether goals determine the neural selection of memory-matching perceptual inputs. In the second study, I measure neural signals of the attentional enhancement and suppression of task-irrelevant memory-matches. In the final study, I use a measure of overt attention to determine if goals will create a prioritization for control among items maintained in working memory. Taken together, the results of these three studies suggest that working memory representations are used flexibly by the attentional system, in a manner consistent with the current task goals.

▼ Speech perception theories differ on whether the process of sub-lexical speech perception is autonomous or is influenced by contextual knowledge such as semantic or lexical context. A better understanding of sub-lexical speech perception would be useful for building cognitive models of speech perception and clinically, in understanding speech perception deficits after neurological injury. We employ the N1 EEG-ERP waveform to measure the sub-lexical processes involved in stop-consonant voicing categorization and test whether voicing encoding is altered by lexical status (e.g. /d/-/t/ in dape-tape versus date-tate). This project improves on previous work investigating sub-lexical perception (e.g. Ganong, 1980) by including an online measure of sub-lexical encoding. We demonstrate effects of lexical context on N1 encoding, indicating interaction of lexical and sub-lexical information. This finding supports online feedback accounts of speech perception. Practically, it also confirms the N1-EEG is a useful candidate for measuring deficits in speech perception in neurologically damaged populations.

The continuous miniaturization of electronics from micro to nano scale has impacted also the micro electromechanical systems (MEMS). However, the transition from MEMS to NEMS (nano electromechanical systems) is not only a matter of size. The actuation and detection principles used for efficient transduction at the microscale are not always efficient at the nanoscale. Also, top-down fabrication for nanometric devices becomes challenging due to resolution limits. Overcoming such difficulties, we were able to fabricate and characterize suspended silicon nanowire resonators with cross sections as small as 30nm by 40nm and lengths of 1.5-3.5μm. The actuation of these resonators was electrostatic, while the detection was performed with two independent physical phenomena: (i) the piezoresistive effect of second order and (ii) the field-effect. Measurements in static regime permitted us to validate the presence of these two mechanisms and extract related parameters such as the gauge factor and the nanowire…

Formal literacy education in Sweden begins in first grade. How reading and writing education is conducted may differ between classes. Trageton (2005) has developed a literacy learning method in which the computer plays a significant role.
The aim of this study was to examine and evaluate how a number of literacy and language abilities are affected by computer based literacy learning developed by Trageton, compared to traditional literacy learning.
In the present study, 26 students in first grade from a school in Östergötland participated. The computer based group consisted of 13 students who attended a class in which computer based literacy learning was used. The control group consisted of 13 students who attended a class in which traditional literacy learning was used. A number of literacy and language tests were administrated in both fall and spring time.
The results showed that more participants in the computer based group, than in the control group, qualified for reading tests at all levels. The results in the writing test showed that the control group performed better in handwriting while the computer based group performed better in written narratives on the computer.
The results of the present study indicate that both literacy learning methods have an effect on reading and writing skills in students in first grade. The results also indicate that each of the learning methods improve various reading and writing skills.

▼ Children with
Down syndrome (DS) often demonstrate greater delays in speech and language development than their general developmental levels would predict. Research into the types of errors made by children with DS indicate their oral language systems resemble those of much younger, typically-developing children and children with language impairments. However, to date, very little research has been conducted investigating the most effective techniques to improve the oral language skills of school-age children with DS. To that end, the present study was a preliminary investigation of the effects of two instructional language techniques shown to be effective with typically developing children with phonological (speech sound) or grammatical impairments. The language instruction employed structural priming (Leonard et al., 2000, 2002) and was designed to teach children to ask fully formed questions or negated statements. Structural priming activities were embedded into children's storybooks. The phonological instruction consisted of a non-developmental linguistically-based approache focused on teaching English consonants that were excluded from children's phonological systems. Six children with
Down syndrome between the ages of 5:0 and 7:11 (years: months) were recruited as participants. All children communicated verbally using primarily two- to three-word utterances prior to their participation in the study. Children were randomly assigned to one of two instructional conditions: (1) the morphosyntactic instructional condition; or (2) the phonological instructional condition. A multiple baseline design across behaviors was used to determine if the assigned instructional condition was related to changes in children's language skills and if instruction in one language domain was related to changes in the other domain. Four children received the morphosyntactic instructional condition. Two participants received instruction on Wh-questions while the other participants received instruction on negated statements. The remaining two participants were randomly assigned to the phonological instructional condition. Children participated in twice-weekly 30-minutes sessions over 8 weeks. Changes in language skills were monitored through the use of weekly morphosyntactic and phonological probes and tracking changes in daily instructional data. Results indicated both instructional conditions were effective in causing change in the targeted language skills. All four children who received the morphosyntactic instruction demonstrated gains in the targeted morphosyntactic skill as well as marked gains in phonological skill (i.e., cross-domain effects). For these participants, growth in oral language skill was apparent when comparing pre- and post-instructional performance on the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation, Second Edition and the BE/DO probe from the Rice-Wexler Test of Early Grammatical Impairment. Children assigned to the phonological instructional condition demonstrated very large gains in productive phonological skill as a…

▼ This study explores the applicability of the
top-
down target costing (TC) method in the Taiwan real estate development industry by considering one new element â creating buyerâs perceived product value. The
top-
down method determines the target costs by subtracting target profit from less controllable sales price. It has been extensively studied in the context of assembly manufacturing industries. On the other hand, the real estate developers produce more heterogeneous products in monopolistically competitive market conditions. In order to adapt to this different user group, TC as an accounting and strategic management tool is expected to have unique characteristics once adopted in the real estate development industry.
This study adopts a descriptive research design. By presenting evidences gathered from six real estate development firms it sheds lights on how the creation of buyerâs perceived product value can be embedded into the target costing mechanism. By examining nine propositions, the study confirms the modified TC model is effective in stabilizing profits due to its focus on creating buyerâs perceived product value. The contributing factors include the ability to charge premium prices as well as effective cost reductions. The findings revealed three unique characteristics of real estate development industry which may influence the adoption of TC model. Firstly, due to stronger bargaining power of the buyers and land owners as well as low entry barriers, the users of TC framework strive towards providing added product value higher than the product price in order to sustainably charge premium prices. It supplements the traditional accounting and strategic management literature in which expected profit margins were primarily achieved by managing costs. The study also reveals that the TC framework is more compatible with the differentiator and confrontational marketing strategies in real estate development industry. Secondly, the modified TC framework may better facilitate firmsâ profitability objectives especially during economic recessions. Thirdly, TC is more applicable at preliminary stages of product planning e.g. land investigation, but is less effective for component- level cost management due to certain market and operational limitations.
Given the different needs of the property developers, the adaptation of the
top-
down target costing model in Taiwan real estate development industry is characterized by emphasizing on the creation of the buyerâs perceived product value, as opposed to a pure cost focus in previous target costing literatures.

▼ This thesis presents the ProximityTable framework, an
interactive tabletop system that uses a
top-
down tracker to track
users around the display. Based on this tracking data it generates
a number of proxemics events that can be used by developers to
generate application-based responses. The main goal of this thesis
is to apply Hall’s proxemics theory to the design of interactive
tabletops in order to support the work of multiple groups around a
single interactive tabletop display. A set of proxemics-based
interactions were designed using the core features of
ProximityTable, and evaluated in three focus group sessions. From
our evaluation, we found that the majority of our participants also
agreed that adapting the workspace according to group size allows
for better interaction with the display, where users can directly
interact with the display or have a better view of the contents in
the workspace. Even when the majority of our participants chose to
work on joined workspaces, there were some instances where they
split the workspace in the middle of the task to complete tasks in
parallel. We also found that users preferred to have a balance
between user and system control, which will allow them to have
manual control of the responses to proxemics events that is
supported by system’s detection.

▼ One of the issues in infants’ language acquisition is - how do infants findword-like forms from fluent speech. Previous literature on infants word segmentationhas mostly focused on understanding the bottom-up cues, i.e., cuesin the input such as acoustic/prosodic cues, that infants utilize in pulling outnouns. This dissertation asks whether infants can use top-down cues in pullingout verbs. Verb segmentation has been reported to be delayed as compared tonoun segmentation and these results have been used to explain the delay in itsacquisition of verbs. This dissertation argues otherwise, demonstrating that infact at the beginning of word segmentation, i.e., at 6-months, infants can pullout verbs with the help of a known word mommy (a paradigm used in Bortfeld,Morgan, Golinkoff, & Rathbun, 2005).The current dissertation goes further and asks how these verbs are represented. To be specific, this dissertation looks at 6-month-olds’ segmentation ofmorphologically complex verbs, such as walking, walks, and walked, and askswhether preverbal infants can relate these forms to the root form walk. Themain focus of this research is to understand how prelexical infants, who cannotrely on semantics, relate complex forms to the root forms. This dissertation expands our understanding of the role of the functionalmorphemes (such as -ing, -ed, -s) in this process by conducting a corpus analysisas well as behavioral experiments. In this dissertation, I locate the beginningstage of this complex form acquisition and show that at 6-months, infants startsegmenting complex verbs, and based on the frequency and the characteristicsof the functional morphemes, infants begin to relate complex forms to rootforms. The findings of this dissertation highlight the importance of top-downcues in early language development and have crucial implications for verb acquisition. Also, these results provide evidence for morpheme-based processingmodels and acquisition models such as prosody-functor models, arguing forearly representation of functional elements and their facilitatory influence onword segmentation and representation.

▼ Herbivores facilitate the existence of coral reef ecosystems by limiting the abundance of fleshy algae. Though fishes often dominate in deeper fore-reefs, echinoids (sea urchins) often dominate herbivore communities in shallow fringing- and back-reefs. Given their strong effects on benthic dynamics in the Caribbean Sea and Indian Ocean, echinoids may drive many key biological processes on shallow coral reefs across the globe. Though described as generalists, echinoid species appear to exert unique effects on coral reef benthic communities. This dissertation examined how variation in the structure of echinoid communities drives benthic community dynamics on Hawaiian reefs. The four research projects (data chapters) used a combination of mensurative and manipulative approaches in the lab and field to address this topic and are organized into two themes: (1) spatial variation in consumer (echinoid) effects in relation to environmental conditions and (2) functional diversity among echinoid species and communities, and their consequent effects on benthic dynamics. In sum, this dissertation demonstrates that (1) herbivory by echinoids varies greatly among sites and can be a dominant structuring force on coral reefs in Maui, HI, (2) the in situ effects of echinoids on coral recruitment appears to be driven by a variety of factors (e.g., echinoid community structure and sediment exposure), (3) echinoid species vary greatly (> 10-fold) in their metabolic demands, grazing rates, and diet preferences, and (4) functional diversity among species leads to significant and large differences in the effects of unique echinoid communities on benthic dynamics and coral growth. These results emphasize the importance and complexity of echinoid community demographics and consequent effects in coral reef ecosystems. Though echinoids are able and willing to consume and survive on a variety of different food items, their unique preferences and grazing behaviors can result in diverse ecological functions and effects on coral reefs. These results suggest that models of coral reef ecosystem dynamics and conservation/management efforts (particularly for shallow reefs where echinoids often dominate) likely need to account for echinoid community structure and function in order to maximize their accuracy and long-term effectiveness.

▼ Despite decades of change, significant racial disparities persist in almost every aspect of life. How to reduce these disparities is not clear and is an enduring matter of debate among activists and scholars. Although dominant approaches take a complex view of the causes of racial inequality focusing on both social psychological and economic structural factors, views on the best way to alleviate racial inequality divide into two main camps:
top down and bottom up. The
top down approach suggests that minority representation in elite spaces (i.e., as legislators, CEOs, or celebrities) is the key alleviator of racial inequality. Conversely, the bottom up approach argues that collective action of those at the bottom (i.e. the poor and working class) is the key to racial inequality alleviation. In this article, I use data on racial disparities in homeownership by state to test these two theoretical approaches to racial inequality against each other. I find that an intersectional class movement reduces racial inequality. Using the labor movement as an example of an intersectional class movement, I find that union power reduces racial inequality, but racial political representation most likely has no effect on racial inequality at the state level.

▼ Since January 1, 2015, the police authority's largest organizational reform took place, and 21 county police authorities were merged into one unified police authority. The purpose of this was to increase the prerequisites for a stronger operating result with higher quality in the efforts. In connection with the reorganization, they sought to have a more distinct management where the operations would be employee driven. In this study, the official's space for action is studied, and to what extent the public works are considered regarding the expertise and knowledge of the employees at local police level. Through an interview study the officials of the local police level shared the experiences and how the reorganization's impact on the space of action has affected their ability on making decisions. The analysis of the study takes the biggest inspiration from Lisky's street-level bureaucracy theory but also shows elements of the authority's structure, i.e. top-down and bottom-up perspective. The study also takes into account the public officials’ tools of power and analyzes the exercise of power.

▼ Mass spectrometry (MS) has been established as important analytical tool in the
characterization of an array of analyte classes, including biological samples. However,
without hyphenation with other techniques, the approach has limitations to the
information that can be elucidated and the samples that can be analyzed. In an attempt
to overcome these limitations, separation is performed prior to MS analysis to aid in
alleviating sample complexity while dissociation is incorporated to increase the
information content. Here, we employ ion mobility (IM), a gas-phase separation
technique, to disperse product ions resulting from collision-induced dissociation (CID),
denoted as MS-CID-IM-MS, for
top-
down analysis for a variety of applications,
specifically, primary structure elucidation, disulfide bond identification, secondary
structure characterization, and polymer characterization.
First, the fundamental attributes of this approach and the resulting information
elucidated are investigated. Using this approach CID product ions are dispersed in two-dimensions,
specifically size-to-charge (IM) and mass-to-charge (MS), and the resulting
2-D data display greatly facilitates the
top-
down information contents; (i) charge state
specific trand lines, (ii) increased dynamic range, (iii) separation of overlapping ion
signals. The increase in peak capacity allows for detection of low abundant fragment
ions providing an increase in the primary sequence coverage and the confidence of ion
assignments as demonstrated by melittin and ubiquitin.
Second, this general approach is applied to the
top-
down analysis for a variety of applications. MS-CID-IM-MS is used for the structural characterization of disulfide linked protein ions by monitoring the ATD of the ion pre- and post-collisional activation. Similarly, this approach can also be used to distinguish product ion type as well as, in some cases, specific secondary structural elements, viz. extended coils or helices providing rapid identification of the onset and termination of extended coil structure in peptides as demonstrated by insulin B-chain. Detect of low abundant ion signals associated with cross-ring cleavages allows this approach to be extended to determine regiochemistry of glucose derived polymers. As demonstrated, the MS-CID-IM-MS approach is highly versatile owing to the information content gained upon dispersion of ions in two-dimensions, providing an effective increase in experimental dynamic range as well as providing conformational information.

▼ In comparison with other Muslim Arabic countries, Tunisia have attained a unique and successful progress when it comes to women’s rights and gender equality. According to researchers, the progress of women’s rights in Tunisia is due to a policy of top down State feminism that the country has adapted since the independence from the French colonialism 1956. Researchers have mainly focused on investigating the diverse factors that contributed to this progress and on tracing the causal mechanism behind the unique women’s legal rights in Tunisia. Nevertheless, there are few studies that carefully examined gender norms in Tunisian society and its relation to the adopted top down State feminism. The goal of this thesis is to analyse how gender norm are described in Tunisians legal texts and compare it to how young educated citizens in Tunisia relate to gender norms, as well to see if there are any eventual potential progress regarding gender equality in the future in Tunisia. This thesis is based on text analysis of law texts and qualitative group interviews. This thesis has no high explanatory ambitions, but it seeks to illustrate the various potential explanations for the differences and similarities between how gender norms are constructed in law texts and among young educated citizens in Tunisia. Also, this thesis seeks to obtain an idea about how these differences and similarities can be understood. This was done with the help of the data collected from the group interviews and also using theories about State feminism and the relation between the state and gender norms. The analysis of law texts shows that the Tunisian state draws a rigorous line between the public and the private sphere. The Tunisian state expresses a progressive view regarding gender norms on the public sphere but a conservative one when it comes to the private sphere. The interviewees’ views regarding gender norms in the public and the private sphere can be divided into two main categories depending on how they argument for their point of view: “Progressive” and “Conservative”. Thus, differences and similarities between how gender norms are expressed in law texts and by the participants in this study and how those can be understood, depends on which ideologies and mindsets the participants have concerning gender norms. Thus, the cultural and religious heritage as well as the social current circumstances can be assumed to be one of the most crucial factors that affects the progress of gender norms and equality in the public sphere likewise the private sphere in the case of Tunisia.

▼ This study investigates
top-
down cracking in the wheel path in asphalt pavement overlay that has been observed increasingly in recent years. It focuses on developing a mechanistic-empirical model to predict
top-
down cracking in the asphalt pavement overlay. The research consisted of literature review, model evaluation, critical material property determination, development of new prediction model and analysis procedures, and model calibration and verification.
Climate, pavement structure, traffic and material properties are identified and incorporated into the newly developed prediction model for
top-
down cracking. Horizontal failure strain which is a measure of the fracture property of asphalt mixtures is determined as the significant material property for
top-
down cracking. Both horizontal failure strain and dynamic modulus are incorporated in the newly developed model for characterizing the fatigue life of asphalt pavements. The shear strain at the edge of tire is considered as critical pavement structural response for
top-
down cracking, which is also considered in the fatigue life model.
The model for prediction
top-
down cracking is calibrated and verified using the data collected from National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) 9-49A project, and is recommended to supplement the current practice of the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). Two levels of horizontal failure strain characterization are provided for the use of pavement designers. The protocol for obtaining the horizontal failure strain from laboratory experiment is provided. The estimation of horizontal failure strain values for Level II input required in MEPDG is also provided.
To mitigate
top-
down cracking in the asphalt pavement overlay, it is recommended to design an asphalt mix with higher horizontal failure strain value to reduce the shear strain response along the edges of tire.

▼ The most contemporary approach to biodiversity conservation within South Africa is that of
community-based initiatives, which seek to combine biodiversity conservation with socioeconomic
development. As a challenge to the Western, science laden approaches to
conservation there is an increasing need for community initiatives to reflect the values of
local communities.
Values of local communities and the management body, CapeNature, with regards to
Driftsands Nature Reserve, Cape Town, were captured and analytically coded through the
qualitative methods of interviewing and participant observation in order to develop a
grounded theory and model.
A discussion of the expressed values suggests that community-based conservation
initiatives are doing little to include community values even though there is a large degree of
agreement between these and corporate values. As such, it is questioned whether
community-based conservation can be practised within an organisation which, due to
procedures and protocols, is
top-
down in its approach.

▼ The pros of having a commingled layer scheme would be considered high with successful reservoir management. If not, the cons will impact the production drastically as unfortunate consequences may result in reservoir fluids communication, well integrity issues, and production termination. Although the plane requires optimizing production with minimal capital investments and operating expenses, it is an enormous challenge considering commingled layers frequent surveillance and workover requirements.
As the value of information is a decision tool for the surveillance frequency, the oil industry often uses static assumptions as an economical replacement of dynamic measurements such as KH static modeling. However, the last is misleading for not considering the effect of dynamic attributes such as reservoir pressure and fluid properties. Simultaneously, the evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) made the challenge of allocating commingled layers allocation possible since AI does not build assumptions based on static properties but rather pick the static and dynamic patterns associated with rock and fluid properties. Accordingly, AI and ML application was used in this research as a new approach for commingled layers allocation estimation, which is known technically as
Top-
Down Modeling (TDM). TDM features the entire acquired static and dynamic field measurements through Artificial Intelligence and Data Science that utilizes Machine Learning, Fuzzy and crisp Logic via Neural Networks to develop a reservoir model.
TDM was tested on a synthetic heterogeneous reservoir model with three commingled layers across 63 wells in conjunction with multi-random comingling schemes throughout wells' lifespan. As the static KH modeling proven ambiguous in picking the effect of reservoir pressure on production profile per layer, a high certainty TDM modeling was successfully achieved both horizontally and vertically on a layer basis which confirms the capability of TDM in allocating commingled layers production in terms of certainty, and operational cost.

▼ The present study investigated how knowledge of tonality is used in sight-reading by comparing sight-reading accuracy across three tonal constructs: major, minor and atonal. It was hypothesized that sight-reading performance would be the worst in instances with no tonal information, as participants would be unable to generate appropriate top-down expectancies to guide their sight-reading. To test this, twelve pianists sight-read major, minor and atonal versions of monophonic, homophonic and polyphonic excerpts. The results indicated that pianists performed the major excerpts with greater accuracy than the atonal excerpts. Furthermore, the errors made within the major excerpts were significantly biased towards diatonicism, and there was a global shift towards tonality in participants’ atonal performances, providing a clear demonstration of how pianists’ expectations might have contributed to their sight-reading performance. The diatonic bias was not found in the minor excerpts, suggesting that the minor hierarchy does exert as strong of an influence during sight-reading.

▼ The passive perception of irrelevant actions can facilitate or interfere with the execution of one’s own actions, known as ‘automatic imitation’ (AI). For example, when one is pressing down on a button, reaction times (RTs) are faster when observing a finger depression (compatible action) and slower whilst observing a finger lift (incompatible action). This phenomenon has been attributed to the mirror neuron system and is thought to represent a laboratory model of spontaneous motor mimicry which facilitates social interactions. AI is typically reduced or absent when the observed movement is produced by a non-human agent. However, previous findings suggest that the magnitude of this ‘human bias’ can be modulated by top-down factors, such as attention and prior instructions regarding whether the movement was produced by a human or non-human agent. This thesis aimed to further examine the role of attention and belief regarding stimulus agency in automatic imitation. Participants were required to perform a pre-specified key press or release response to a diffuse yellow flash go signal. This response was either compatible or incompatible with the finger or object movement, which was presented simultaneously. AI was measured by subtracting compatible from incompatible RTs to calculate the compatibility effect. Experiments 1a, 1b, 2 and 7 focused on exploring the role of attention in AI. Experiment 1a revealed that the human bias is dependent on when the go signal occurs. AI was greater for the finger stimulus relative to the object stimulus when the go signal occurred during the movement, but not after the movement. It is suggested that attention to the movement is reduced when the go signal occurs after the movement. This implies that the human bias in AI is dependent on attention being directed towards the movement. Experiments 1b and 2 indicated that AI was removed if a visual dual task was added, but that AI remained and was greater when an auditory dual task was added. This indicates that AI was removed when the visual dual task competed for cognitive resources with action observation. The facilitation of AI when an auditory dual task was added suggests that the additional cognitive load may have occupied cognitive resources required for the inhibition of imitation. These findings highlight that AI is susceptible to attentional load, implying that AI is not a strongly automatic process. Experiment 7 explored whether the spread of attention modulates the magnitude of AI by comparing a ‘diffuse’ go signal to a ‘focused’ go signal which directed attention to the stimulus movement. Significantly larger AI effects were produced for the group of participants who saw the focused flash first, indicating that focusing attention on the spatial location of the movement increased AI, and furthermore that initially observing the focused flash ‘trained’ participants to pay attention to the stimulus movement in the diffuse flash condition. Experiments 3 and 4 examined why AI effects for non-human stimuli are more likely to be…

▼ According to the predictive coding approach to perception, the brain uses predictions based on previous experience to optimise perception, by allocating more computational resources to important or unexpected stimuli. Overall, predictions allow faster and more accurate recognition, but occasionally, when the prediction is incorrect, it may lead to a misperception. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the influence of top - down processes on perceptual decisions. I utilised misperceptions as a signature of those top - down influences and Signal Detection Theory to assess their size, type and direction. I used Electroencephalography to determine the stage of information processing at which different types of predictions influence sensory processing. The empirical studies are clustered around Topic 1: Influence of Predictions on Perception, Topic 2: Types of Predictions and Topic 3: Value as Modulator of Perception.Studies clustered in Topic 1 analysed and quantified the influence of predictions on perceptual decisions and showed that misperceptions can be triggered by wrong predictions only in very specific circumstances. In particular, misperceptions occurred only if there was some degree of correspondence between the wrong prediction and the sensory input. Otherwise, predictions were easily rejected, increasing the overall accuracy. I also demonstrated that misperceptions were most likely to happen in a window on the continuum of input quality where the stimulus - related uncertainty was highest. Topic 2 comprised experiments investigating different types of predictions and their interaction. Behavioural (but not EEG) results revealed interference between passive and active expectations. The early event related (ERP) components N1 and P2, as well as the P300, were all modulated by expectations. Expected events either increased or decreased the P300 amplitude, depending on whether the expected item was predictable and thus ignored, or awaited and thus flagged for further processing. This suggests that P300 might be an index of top - down resource allocation. Experiments within Topic 3 studied the influence of values, as examples of executive processes, on perceptual decisions, using either natural or acquired high - value stimuli. The results suggested that the process of recognition is adjusted in a top - down manner to account for the cost and benefit values related to different outcomes. The trade - off between processing time and accuracy is not fixed, but can be adjusted to optimise recognition in the task at hand. Furthermore, value can change the focus of perception, resulting in different elements of the sensory input being amplified or ignored. Overall, these results showed that misperceptions are 'intelligent mistakes' - a by - product of a top-down, prediction - based optimisation strategy that decreases the computational load, while increasing accuracy and improving the allocation of computational resources.

Colleagues, the school management and the Swedish Skolverket (the Swedish school management organisation, controlled by the Swedish government) are in this study the main external influences that are studied. The study is carried out with an organisation theoretical approach, witch states that controlling the schools practical activities is hard, taking in to account a great variety of “problems” that follow a teachers every day work. Aspects like shortage of time, a lack of economic backing and school tradition are thought to be negating factors that make a political “top-down” control of the school necessary in order to force school political ideas to get hold in school classroom activities.Through five qualitative interviews with the teachers, mixed views takes shape. Most of the teachers are slightly torn, but mainly positive, to the changes that has followed with the new policy documents in the history subject. The grading system is mainly considered to be an improvement since the one before, considering it’s way of describing students subject qualities on a relative scale. Also, the subjects more analysing soul is mainly thought to make it more relevant in general. The main result shows that all teachers, in various degree, have reformed their class room activities, leaning school history to a slightly more advanced and academic oriented subject, with a greater proportion of analytic segments to carry the subjects narration through the courses. Throughout this study, source validation is by far shown to be the most prominent class room activity that causes this effect. Studies in how history has been used by individuals, groups and governments are also revealed to be an important factor, leading the subject in a more advanced direction. The study of external factors that had influenced the conversion process clearly stated that the teachers colleagues was the main source of reliance and support when interpreting the new policy documents. All five teachers claimed to have been discussing and comparing their work with their colleagues throughout the passed year. The schools managements had not –3with the exception of one, that were – been directly involved in the interpretation process. Nor had they been generous in their disposal of time given to discussion with colleagues. Though, the school managements had been underlining the importance of a interpretation collaboration and had made sure that the teachers had been given time to attend introduction seminars. The influence and support from Skolverket was amongst the teachers mainly considered to have been insufficient. Some introduction seminars to the 2011 school…

▼ This essay investigates how the new school curriculum, Lvux12, have been implemented in Linköping, with focus on the education Swedish for Immigrants (SFI). A lot of criticisms have been aimed at the SFI educations around the country and this is partly what the reform is based on, to be able to improve the education to the better. Despite this reform, criticisms are still being heard, so is the implementation of the reform really a success and has it been any changes? In this essay there are mainly two analytical perspectives being used; bottom-up and top-down. Based on these, the empirical materials collected through interviews are analyzed in comparison with already existing publications about the implementation process. The focus of the essay is concentrated to the information process, the adaptation level at micro level relative the directive from macro level, and also implementation barriers. It proves that there are some problems during the information process which did not execute the way described in the publications prior to the implementation. It has also emerged implementation barriers related to this since the information didn’t reach through, probably due to poor structure or due to pure reluctance. One big problem is the lack of follow-up and evaluation, both at local and national level. Even if it has been possible to enforce many adaptations and it has been possible to work with the reform from the micro level, it is still missing resources and some organizational support from further progress. The question whether the implementation has been a success or not is complex and a hard one to answer. There are many aspects to consider and different results points in different directions. Over all, the conclusion has to be that the implementation is a success, although with several possibilities for improvement. The question still has many question marks left and it is both relevant and important to continue to investigate the subject to reach appropriate measures. A lot is working well, but it can always get better and one has never learnt enough.
