▼ Teak is considered one of the highest value hardwood species. The Lao wood processing industry has been using teak wood harvested from different ages, ranging from 10 to 35 years, with broadly different prices. However, the current grading rules used for teak logs are unsuitable for development of a fair and transparent pricing market. To date, there has been no regulation of market requirements for wood characteristics and/or wood properties. The key terms of wood characteristics and wood properties used in this study were defined as: a) wood characteristics refer to the visual appearance or features of logs and square logs; for example, heartwood proportion, wood colour, presence of knots, bend, pipe, buttress, decay, end checks and splits; b) wood physical and mechanical properties describe the quantitative characteristics of wood and its behaviour in response to external influences and externally applied forces; for example, wood density, dimensional stability, stiffness, bending strength, compression strength, shear strength, and hardness. The overall aim of this study was to identify the key characteristics and properties of wood that affect the selling price of teak logs grown in Laos. More specifically the objectives of the study were to: 1. define the characteristics and properties of plantation grown teak logs that are valued by wood processors and manufacturers; 2. understand the influences of wood characteristics and properties on the current selling price of plantation grown teak logs used in Lao wood processing and manufacturing industry, and; 3. determine the key characteristics and properties that could be used if a log grading system was to be applied in Laos, and that is based on the results identified from the buyers’ requirements. Both semi-structured interviews of teak buyers and qualitative and quantitative data of wood characteristics and properties of plantation grown teak in Laos that were valued by teak buyers were obtained and analyzed. The results showed that while the harvesting age of plantation teak was reported to be between 10-35-year-old, the dominant harvesting age was between 21-25 years. Three types of teak timber were commonly sold in Laos: 24.7% as standing trees, 39.6% as round logs and 35.7% as square logs. From the marketing supply chain it was found that the end buyers of teak timber were wood sawmillers and wood products manufacturers. The local traders (middlemen) who purchased teak logs from the growers and in turn supply to the end buyers account for 49% of sales. A further 41% was sourced directly from teak growers and the remaining 10% was sourced via local small wood sawmillers and manufacturers. The main wood products produced from plantation teak included joinery products, door and window frames, and furniture (57.9%, 26.3% and 15.8%, respectively). ▼ There is currently limited market penetration for prefabricated timber structural systems in non-residential multi-storey construction in Australia and New Zealand. This limited penetration is caused in part by a fragmented supply chain. There is a need for manufacturers, fabricators and designers to align themselves to better meet the needs and expectations of the non-residential construction environment. There is limited literature available on the impact of the supply chain on other Engineered-To-Order (ETO) products and there is a gap in knowledge on how the supply chain impacts on the performance of prefabricated timber systems. The manufacturer in the prefabricated timber supply chain is the key figure preventing the entire supply chain being structured to better meet the needs of the end user. The prefabricated timber construction supply chain is not structured with the end user in mind, thus decreasing its value. The prefabricated timber supply chain in its entirety should be structured for the non-residential market to better suit the needs of the customer rather than the supplier. Structural contingency theory outlines there should be a fit between the organisational processes and the environment. It states that company models that match the environmental requirements should perform more successfully than those that do not. When applying structural contingency theory to the supply chain the individual dimensions of supply chain should be aligned in order to achieve the best performance. Case studies interviews were undertaken with industry practitioners and senior leaders from organisations along the supply chain for prefabricated timber systems in Australia, New Zealand (NZ), United Kingdom (UK), Austria, Germany and Finland. These were undertaken to establish how and why the supply chain and organisations along it impact on the performance of prefabricated timber systems. These interviews together with current state-or-art of literature formed the basis of the preliminary supply chain model. Building case studies were then undertaken to further clarify these issues and test structural contingency theory, with the supply chain as the environment, the theory was tested using prefabricated timber systems.

▼ This research examines expanding Value Stream Mapping (VSM) from a single organisation tool to a supply chain tool. VSM is a lean production tool that is used to identify areas of waste, traditionally in manufacturing processes internal to a single organisation. This research will adapt and apply a supply chain view of VSM in the context of New Zealand timber exports with a focus on phytosanitary compliance. Phytosanitary regulations are an important part of international trade as it allows for countries to ensure that products entering their country are free from contaminants, such as pests and diseases. New Zealand must meet other countries phytosanitary requirements in order to enforce our biosecurity measures. Meeting these phytosanitary regulations for export adds cost and reduces efficiencies across the supply chain, reducing this impact while still maintaining a high standard would be beneficial to the export industries in New Zealand, this research will focus on the timber industry. This research uses a multi case study approach to apply VSM to create six current state maps for the phytosanitary compliance processes in the supply chain for sawn timber being exported to Australia and a selection of countries in Asia. The research outlines the traditional methods used in VSM and suggests an adapted method of applying VSM to processes that cross multiple organisational boundaries for a supply chain view. A single future state map is then created, with suggested industry changes. The research objectives are to apply VSM across multiple organisations in a supply chain, to identify the current state map of the processes involved with meeting phytosanitary compliance requirements for Australia and several countries in Asia for sawn timber, and to suggest a future state map for the phytosanitary compliance system in New Zealand. Overall, it was found that the current phytosanitary processes are well managed in New Zealand and meets the requirements of our key export customers. However, the application of a supply chain VSM view has revealed some wastes that could improve the process. This research adds to the established Lean systems literature with an adapted supply chain VSM approach.

▼ Conservation easements are increasingly becoming a popular land use control for landowners, government agencies and non-profit conservation organizations. These legal documents restrict a landownerâ s development rights and constrain other property uses. The landowner (grantor) voluntarily places an easement on his or her property, while the government agency or qualified conservation organization (grantee) holds it in perpetuity. While the Land Trust Allianceâ s (LTA) most recent estimate of easement-protected land amounts to nearly 2.6 million acres in 2000, an estimate of forestland protected is nonexistent. Additionally, no empirical studies address forest management on current easements nationwide, although a few studies address forestry at the state- or regional-level. As a result, this survey was designed to address three goals by sampling 1,527 conservation organizations and 63 state government agencies that may hold conservation easements. The first goal estimates total forestland protected. The second goal determines forestry restrictions commonly found in current easements. The third goal ascertains the impact of easements on forest management and timber supply. Survey results show that over 536 conservation organizations and 20 state agencies hold over 16,025 conservation easements on 4.9 million acres of all land types. Of these totals, a minimum of 3,598 easements protect over 2.5 million forestland acres. Forest management restrictions tend to vary based on the protected propertyâ s forest resources. The desires of the grantee holding the easement also influence the type and level of forestry restrictions. To date, conservation easement restrictions do not appear to impact timber supply nationally, although local or regional timber supply may be impacted in the future, especially in the Northeast. Several conclusions offer technical insights on forestland protection by conservation easements. First, grantees should complete a baseline forest inventory prior to placing an easement on a forested property. This inventory provides a basis for drafting effective easement provisions and permits future monitoring. Second, grantees should encourage professionally-written forest management plans on every working forest easement. Third, all conservation organizations need to work cooperatively with government agencies in locating potential conservation lands. GIS/GPS technology helps demonstrate the spatial relationship of conservation easements to other government-protected lands, promoting efficient location of properties that augment other protected lands. A pesquisa desenvolveu-se com a análise estratégica da cadeia produtiva madeireira, mediante a realização de novos ensaios tecnológicos de três espécies com potencial comercial da região de Altamira, no rio Xingu (Oeste do estado do Pará), para melhoria do sistema produtivo das indústrias madeireiras em larga escala e utilização por empresas locais. As três espécies selecionadas foram: Sterculia pruriens (Aubl.) K. Schum. (Axixá), Pouteria oppositifolia (Ducke) Baehni (Guajará-bolacha) e Tachigali myrmecophila Ducke (Taxi-preto). Coletaram-se dados secundários e de campo na área de estudo do projeto, abrangendo cinco municípios da Mesorregião Sudoeste Paraense. Os estudos realizados confirmaram que as madeiras do Axixá, do Guajará e do Taxi efetivamente permitem o aproveitamento comercial pela indústria florestal. As análises de colorimetria, da influência dos extrativos na formação da cor, da assinatura espectral, dos testes de ultra-som e dos ensaios em escala microscópica mostraram-se aplicáveis e factíveis. Comprovou-se a aplicabilidade da técnica AWOT como ferramenta de planejamento florestal, evidenciando-se a importância do desenvolvimento de ações para introdução de novas madeiras no mercado, conjugadas com outras iniciativas das esferas econômica, técnica e política. A travers cette thèse nous apportons un éclairage sociologique au débat engagé depuis des décennies sur la problématique de la mise en vente des bois publics. A ce titre, nous étudions, dans la première partie de la thèse, le système d’enchères qui reste encore le principal mode de vente utilisé par l’Office National des Forêts. Nous identifions les conditions d’encastrement de ces ventes, considérant que les comportements des participants sont déterminés par l’interaction complexe de facteurs économiques, socio-structuraux, politiques, cognitifs, institutionnels formels et informels. Nous montrons à cette occasion que l’intérêt accordé à l’enchère réside dans sa capacité à trouver collectivement un consensus sur la valeur et l’allocation des lots de bois. Dans la deuxième partie de la thèse, nous analysons l’évolution récente du cadre institutionnel appliqué aux ventes de bois publics en nous appuyant sur les notions de construction sociale des institutions et de dépendance au chemin. Nous y démontrons que, malgré le verrouillage institutionnel organisé autour de l’enchère pendant plusieurs siècles, le développement des contrats d’approvisionnement, à la suite des tempêtes de 1999 et de l’action concertée d’une partie de la filière bois, marque l’émergence d’un embranchement institutionnel en matière de vente de bois publics. La présentation des facteurs économiques et non économiques mis en avant par les partisans de chacun des deux modes de vente nous amène à conclure que la double trajectoire institutionnelle (enchères/contrats d’approvisionnement) devrait dans l’avenir permettre de répondre aux différentes problématiques d’approvisionnement propres à la filière bois.

This thesis gives a sociological perspective on a debate that started more than thirty years ago, concerning the choice of methods for selling public timber. For this reason, the first part of the thesis focuses on the study of the auction system − the main selling method still used by the French National Forest Service. We have identified the conditions of the embeddedness of auctions, considering that during the exchanges actors are influenced by the complex interaction of economic, socio-structural, politic, cognitive, formal and informal institutional factors. We have shown that the point in using auctions has to do with its capacity to collectively find a consensus about the value and the distribution of timber lots. In the second part of the thesis, we have analyzed the recent evolution of the institutional framework applied to the public timber sales by leaning on the concepts of “the social construction of institutions” and “path dependence”. ▼ Maine is a historically important timber supply region in North America and understanding the potential change in forestlands and their product industries affected by climate change and various socio-economic conditions can better improve the forest healthy and sustain a sustainable product industry. A statistical harvest choice model for the state of Maine was developed in chapter 1. It was estimated using a multinomial logit model of two products, under varying management intensities, and ownership classifications across varying market conditions. Results indicate that stumpage prices have a significant effect on forest landowners' harvest decisions and that the expansion of conservation land will have a relatively small impact on Maine’s timber supply. In chapter 2, five shared socioeconomic narrative pathways were developed to explore the consequence of changes in Maine’s social-economic elements to the future of the forest sector. Quantitative assumptions were combined with the stand-level harvest choice model to estimate a possible range of outcomes for the carbon stock and timber supply from 2020-2100. Results indicate a wide variation in timber harvest and carbon stock across all pathways, with the largest variation driven by changes in stumpage prices. In nearly all cases, Maine’s forest and carbon stock are estimated to expand over the next 80 years. In chapter 3, four greenhouse gas emission scenarios estimated using the HadGEM2 and CCSM4 climate models were used to quantify the impact of climate change on Maine’s forests through 2100. The forest landscape model LANDIS-II with PnET-Succession extension was used to project changes in aboveground biomass (AGB) and carbon (AGC) resulting from climate change, and the normalized and calibrated forest yield curves were then linked with the stand-level harvest choice model to quantify impacts to timber supply. Our simulation results demonstrated that forest AGB and AGC were most driven by continued recovery dynamics. In addition, climate change also has a net positive impact on growth and biomass accrual. As a result, Maine’s forest, carbon, and timber stocks are all expected to increase through 2100 under all climate change scenarios. In chapter 4, the SSPs framework was combined with the landscape model and timber economic model to explore the physical impacts of climate change as well as policies and socio-economic change on Maine’s forest sector. We found that Maine’s forests would become a large reservoir of carbon if current trends continued. Further, we estimated that socio-economic changes contribute to larger variations in forest supply and carbon stocks than climate change. Finally, new forest conservation policies may need to be implemented for a future where high GHG emissions and high socioeconomic challenges to mitigation scenarios, which could otherwise result in losses in forest carbon. ▼ Stora Enso is today one of the four largest companies in the swedish forest industry. The company's business is spread all over the world, but it’s headquarters are located in Sweden and Finland. Stora Enso Skog is part of the company's global organization for wood supply to Swedish sawmills, paper mills and pulp mills. As all companies, regardless of industry, are part of a supply chain, an impact on and by other performers in the chain occurs. It is this influence that determines the prerequisites and starting points for effective processes and flows. The supply chain between forests and industry, on the other hand, is complex as tree as a raw material source are generally difficult to specify. The purpose of this case study is, therefore, to map the supply chain of the pinetree-timber at the “Dalälven” area from forest harvesting to measurement and sorted stock at the sawmill. Based on this objective, a delimitation has been made in such a way that the case study is performed only after pinetree-timber as a product. By dividing this pinetree-timber process into three parts; the harvesting process, the transport process and the measurement process an observation and semi-structured interviews was made with closely related staff as well as the transport partner Westan Logistik. The answers from interviews constituted an empirical comparison that was then compared to reviewed secondary data in the form of different literary theories. The results are visualized through a process flowchart, a information flowchart, a value-flow analysis, and a leadtime analysis, which have shown, among other things, that the value-creating activities (V) are less compared to non-value-creating activities (I) and the necessary non-value creation activities (N) in the pine-tree timber process. Even the leadtime proportion is greatest in the non-value-creating activities. The results provided the basis for an analysis and, last but not least, conclusions could be drawn. Because the raw material is complex, and the pinetree-timber process contains many performers, it can be a challenge to get a smooth and efficient flow through the supply chain. Interviews and theories have shown that the physical as well as the informative flow has difficulties which, for instance, slow down the process more than necessary. It is therefore interesting to see through a mapping how these can be improved and have a higher level of efficiency.

▼ The demand for forest biomass for energy production is on the rise. With 214 million acres of forestland, the U.S. South has a huge potential for forest biomass supply. Consequently, there is a need to predict the forest biomass supply in response to potential bioenergy demand scenarios and assess the effects on conventional forest products markets and landowners. This study models woody biomass supply variations in face of mature woody bioenergy markets and their associated impact on forests in 13 southern states. It also proposes woody biomass harvesting guidelines that can aid in ensuring sustainability. This study is divided into six chapters. The first chapter details the background and defines the relevance of the study along with objectives. The second chapter explores the likely effects of the emergence of a mature bioenergy market in the US South through an exogenous regional timber optimization model to assess how the supply of woody biomass for energy varies with time. This chapter also predicts how these variations can impact traditional forest product industries, landowners, forest inventory, product prices, and removals. The third chapter modifies the regional optimization model to make it endogenous and evaluates impacts of mature woody bioenergy markets on Southern US forests. The fourth chapter discusses the supply response in face of woody bioenergy markets in terms of productivity and management improvements. The chapter also discusses the impacts of imposing sustainability constraints on woody biomass supply estimates and their impact on Southern forests. The fifth chapter formulates a partial adjustment based econometric model that can be used to estimate medium and long term elasticities for three forest biomass products (pulpwood, sawtimber, and woody bioenergy). These estimates are used to strengthen the demand aspects of regional timber optimization model.Overall conclusions, limitations, and future research are outlined in the sixth chapter. ▼ The subject of the Ph.D. Thesis is the development of an Information System aiming at optimizing the production, distribution and marketing of round and sawn timber. The Forest Service, and until 1986 the State Forestry Board (SFB), is responsible for the management and distribution of wood and its products. The "mechanism" of the identity includes a metal plate marking each trunk, and the information are being then recorded electronically. In this context, an innovative Traceability and Information System model was developed to support the production, distribution and marketing of wood by the Forest Service as well as by individuals.The proposed system belongs to the category of Innovative Traceability Techniques, a Traceability System that bases its function on the innovative method of RFID technology and software, with wireless technology. With this method, the system can be instantly reachable by many users.Essentially, this is an application software that accepts external data from the user, but can also add information and process them according to the management model that we want to improve, towards the improvement of the production chain and process the problems that arise with the current method.The Traceability System is based on a data entry database that has been formatted with all the parameters that affect the issue. The model traverses the wood production chain, which contains all the information about the logs, such as wood quality, the amount of wood and the recording of cutting dates, etc. in a more flexible form and also can increase the degree of automation of the inventory list, reducing the need for repeated wood measurements and increasing the overall profitability that will bring greater economic benefits.The design of the system was based on a thorough research of mainly international studies on Traceability in general and more specifically on timber Traceability, forestry operations, and our own research in recent years on this subject. It was also necessary to investigate the working methods and methods applied by the Forest Service in the existing logging system to identify weaknesses and problems in order to eliminate them in the implementation of the system.The development of the information system was performed using the innovative technology of RFID and assistance of Database software, to achieve dynamic content between RFID antennas and tags and the base that receives the application data. RFID technology is very useful in modern industries that require data integrity and high performance. Initially the technology was used to monitor vehicles, goods and courier services. ▼ To address the scale mountain pine beetle (MPB) outbreak in British Columbia, salvage has become fully integrated with timber supply strategies. The objective of this thesis is to assess the economic impact of different salvage strategies depending on different attack levels, decay rates, and stakeholder discount rates. The study area is located in N.E. British Columbia where the MPB has not yet reached its peak and where susceptible to attack stands account for 40% of the area. Salvage strategies were modelled with a timber supply model (Woodstock) which uses a linear programming type II optimization approach. Performance of the model was assessed over a range of indicators such as NPV, profit, salvage proportion, species composition, inventory levels, and non-recoverable volume. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on harvest flow, discount rate, and ending inventory. The model was very sensitive to the intensity of attack and less sensitive to the decay level. The high level of attack resulted in large volume losses, mostly as un-salvaged inventory. Although allowable annual cut (AAC) uplifts have an economic benefit, they do not necessarily maximize the salvage of pine. Non-pine species are an important component of the salvage and these species are also essential for the future timber supply. If the objective is to ensure quality and quantity of the future forest, policies have to complement AAC uplifts by strongly encouraging the salvage of mainly pine-leading stands and management options that minimize the “by-catch” of non-pine species and minimize destruction of advanced regeneration during salvage. However, this has an opportunity cost for the private industry where the objective is to maximize profit. If the salvage strategy focuses on decreasing the impact on cash flows, achieving desirable ending inventory levels, avoiding salvage of stands after shelf-life, and reducing impact on non-attack species, then the current harvest level will likely lead to a mid-term timber supply fall-down. Using the fibre for bioenergy production is an alternative if managing for bioenergy can be integrated into harvest operations. However, unlike mill residues, the bioenergy supply has to fully account for harvest and transportation costs of dead wood to the mill.

▼ Given the lack of access of forest dependent rural dwellers to resources and markets as well as the lack of an institutional environment that is conducive for reconciling biodiversity conservation and livelihood strategies in the Brazilian Amazon, the main and sub-research questions are respectively: How do informal and formal institutions affect the access to Brazil nuts and markets by buyers and, especially, by gatherers within the Brazil nut value chain in the Lower Amazon basin? How are institutions – that affect resource and market access – institutionalized and formalized? By identifying self-declared informal and formal institutions filtering resource and market access of upstream value chain actors, it is scoped for leverage points towards locally adapted institutions to overcome such access limitations in the realm of strengthening Brazil nut gatherers’ chain position. The following institutions in use have been found to be crucial for determining the (lack of) access to livelihood relevant resources (Brazil nuts) and markets in the Lower Amazon basin. The informal institution analyzed is the debt-peonage system aviamento and the formal one is the ‘Term of Compromise’ (TdC, per acronyms in Portuguese) in Brazil. The TdC is a legally-based instrument for overcoming conflicts between the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio, per acronyms in Portuguese) – as responsible branch of the Brazilian Ministry of Environment (MMA, per acronyms in Portuguese) for managing federal Protected Areas (PAs) – and traditional populations over natural resources in such areas. The innovative analytical framework developed herein captures how both informal and formal institutions (determinants) as well as related formalization and institutionalization (processes) affect the resource and market access by upstream value chain actors. This framework helps capturing institution-based access restrictions affecting the chain position of Brazil nut gatherers (corresponding to the main research question). It builds the groundwork for constructing a model to help understand what is behind empirical phenomena pertaining to the institutionalization and formalization of access limiting institutions (corresponding to the sub-research question herein). The proposed ‘model on analytical ingredients for self-sustained strengthening of upstream value chain nodes’ is built for transforming locally reported institution-based access problems towards the outcome of adapted access enabling institutions for strengthened upstream nodes of food chains. ▼ The main focus of this thesis is the use of knowledge in the forest planning process of large Swedish forest owning companies. The forest planning is conducted as a three step system: long-, medium- and short-term planning. In these steps, knowledge is created, stored, shared and applied – knowledge about the forest as well as other relevant knowledge. The studies have knowledge management theory linked to strategy theories as a base for description and analysis of the use of knowledge in the forest planning process. A draft for a changed planning process is presented which aims at a better management of knowledge in forest companies. In Swedish forest owning companies the long-term forest plans are developed at top level and transferred down the organization over a number of steps. These steps involve the medium-term planning where planners prepare the compartments to be harvested and register them in the so called tract bank. The harvest managers use the compartments in the tract bank as a stock to meet delivery plans. This is where the forest plans meet harvest and delivery plans. The interaction between the forest plans and the sales plans was studied. The results showed that sales managers tend to use other input data such as previous sales volumes, rather than what is found in the medium-term plan, due to what they considered as lack of precisions and detail in the forest plan. Also, the supply of compartments with desirable attributes in the tract bank is not always sufficient to meet the demand from the harvest managers. This could make the harvest managers to sidestep the forest plan altogether. It seems that forest plans do not always are followed. In the light of these studies, a proposition for a bottom-up approach to an integrated planning process was developed. This approach was made with the purpose to stimulate the use of knowledge at local level to enhance the accuracy and applicability of the forest plans. With this approach employees at local level would hopefully be more involved in the planning process, leading to a higher adherence of the plan. This would in turn increase the association of realized plans with intended plans, thus improving the competitive position of the company.
