▼ Dissertation under the direction of Professor Douglas A. Knight
The story of Esther has a complex history of transmission and interpretation. This project examines the Hebrew (Masoretic Text) and Greek versions (Septuagint and Alpha Text) in order to understand how and why the texts depict the practices of fasting, prayer and circumcision differently. The lenses of historical
criticism, literary
criticism and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice shed light on the relationship of the texts both to one another and to their ancient socio-historical contexts. Both practices and religious texts play important roles in an individual's and group's identity and relationship to others, and the versions of Esther indicate different understandings of Judean/Jewish identity in the Diaspora.
Each main body chapter highlights a particular practice related to Judean/Jewish identity and religion: fasting, prayer and circumcision. After engaging historical
criticism in order to understand how the versions relate to each other developmentally, investigations of ideology and identity point to different perspectives associated with positions and power relations within the empires of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. In general, the history of redaction of each version is complex, so that the Masoretic Text, for example, is more developed than the Greek versions in some places in the text and less developed in others. Concerning ideology and identity, the Masoretic Text displays an interest in allegiance within the empire, making no explicit claims about God or Torah. In contrast, the Greek versions retain an interest in this allegiance, but observance of Torah is also vital to Judean/Jewish identity. Yet, each Greek version developed in different times and places, so they also differ with regard to allegiance and the roles the practices play.
Ultimately, each version makes different claims about fasting, prayer and circumcision within larger narrative complexes espousing different notions of Judean/Jewish identity which developed out of different socio-historical contexts in the Second Temple period.

▼ Many
textual scholars will be aware that the title of the present thesis has been composed in a conscious revisionary relation to Tim William Machan’s influential
Textual Criticism and Middle English Texts. (Tim William Machan,
Textual Criticism and Middle English Texts (Charlottesville, 1994)). The primary subjects of Machan’s study are works written in English between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, the latter part of the period conventionally labelled Middle English. In contrast, the works with which I am primarily concerned are those written by scholars of Old and Middle Irish in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Where Machan aims to articulate the
textual and cultural factors that characterise Middle English works as Middle English, the purposes of this thesis are (a) to identify the underlying ideological and epistemological perspectives which have informed much of the way in which medieval Irish documents and texts are rendered into modern editions, and (b) to begin to place the editorial theory and methodology of medieval Irish studies within the broader context of Biblical, medieval and modern
textual criticism. Hence, the title is
Textual Criticism and Medieval Irish Studies, rather than

▼ This project studies the ways recent changes in cultural theory and information
technology are influencing the delivery of texts, and how these changes signal a need for
innovation in editing practice. The word incunabulum describes the material objects
produced in the early stages of the development of a technology; most commonly, it
refers to printing during the period just before the turn of the sixteenth century when
material textuality in the west was changing from a manuscript to a print base. According
to critics of digital culture like Janet Murray the current shift to digital media entails
many of the same changes. Following this, I will refer to this period as the second incunabulum.
Given the limitations of HTML and SGML markup and storage
technologies used in early digitization projects, scholars realize that the second
incunabular period, much like the first, will not be a simple linear change succession. Just
as the shift from manuscript to print involved a multifaceted series of complex social and
practical transformations over decades, our current technological transition generates a wide variety of communicative, cultural, and political implications. As a critical point of entry, the comparison of the first and second incunabular periods offers insight into the ways in which past practices can help us approach our
textual future. As a broad study of highly particular
textual practices, the current work presents something of a paradox.
However, through a series of focused historical readings and formal applications, this
trans-historical study provokes questions that may lead to effective new work in the field.
In Theories of the Text, leading editorial theorist D.C. Greetham points out the need to study the same three projects that I examine: William Langland's Piers Plowman, The Oxford Shakespeare,
and James Joyce's Ulysses. By examining the editorial practices
underlying each work, I develop a theory of editing based on a form of philological
critique that engages with problems faced by many current research projects and which
provides suggestions for further research.

▼ According to Lewis Seifert, “Fairy tales are obsessed with femininity … These narratives are concerned above all else with defining what makes women different from men and, more precisely, what is and is not acceptable feminine behaviour” (1996: 175). This study, then, will demonstrate how certain patriarchal ideas associated with fairy tales are disseminated when fairy tale elements are reworked in film, visual art and the novel. The aim of this project, more specifically, is to show how certain stereotypical representations of women endure in works that could be read as feminist appropriations of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’. Stereotypical representations of women are numerous and may include: depicting females as fitting neatly into what is often called the virgin/whore or Madonna/whore binary opposition; depicting women as being caring and kind, but also passive, submissive and weak; and depicting older women as being sexually unattractive and evil (Goodwin and Fiske 2001:358; Sullivan 2010: 4). It must be said that the list of stereotypes relating to women given here is far from exhaustive

▼ To my knowledge there has been no thoroughgoing eclectic study of the text of any New Testament book, although the principles of eclectic textual criticism have been applied to individual readings. This thesis attempts to provide a study of all the known variant readings in the Greek text of the Pastoral Epistles. To this end, a full critical apparatus has been compiled and a discussion on each variant reading is provided with the object of establishing the original text and of explaining how variants arose. The theory, on which these discussions are based is found in an introductory chapter. This introduction begins by arguing that previous methods of textual criticism based largely on the "cult of the best manuscript" are untenable and unreliable nowadays- due partly to the growing realisation that no one manuscript or group of manuscripts contains the original text. Many scholars realise that the original reading may be found in any given manuscript. The implication of this is of course that the peculiar readings of every manuscript must (ultimately) be examined. The principles for such an eclectic study then follow. These emphasise the need for an awareness of how scribes worked and how palaeography often caused variation in a text. It is also shown how Atticism was sometimes responsible for variant readings. This section of the Introduction also indicates how scribes often made deliberate alterations in a text they were copying in order to avoid a theological or grammatical expression they found offensive. It is also argued in this section how an awareness of the author's style can often enable the textual critic to reestablish the original text. The Introduction closes with a discussion of the positive advantages of the eclectic method of textual criticism. Among these advantages are (l) that the original text is established independently of purely documentary evidence, (2) that a full commentary on the critical apparatus is written, and (3) that the behaviour and reliability of manuscripts can be seen. There then follows a discussion on all the variant readings in "I Timothy","II Timothy" and "Titus". The variants are arranged in verse order with the exception of the variants involving δε, Καϲ and the Divine Names, which are discussed for convenience in Appendices. Each page of variants is headed by a critical apparatus showing Greek, Versional and Patristic evidence. Beneath each apparatus appears a discussion on the variant: this discussion is based on the principles outlined in the introductory chapter, and without regard to the "weight" of the manuscript support. In Appendix I the author's use of the Divine Names ΙϹ ΧϹ, ΚϹ and ΘϹ is established and a discussion on the variants involving these titles follows. It is, for instance, argued that strict grammatical regulations governed the author in his use of arthrous or anarthrous ΚϹ and ΘϹ, and in the order of writing ΙϹ ΧϹ. Appendix II contains the discussion of variants involving the addition and omission of Και. It is argued that many instances of are…

▼ The fifth-century manuscript known as the Codex Alexandrinus contains the entirety of the Greek Old and New Testaments and is a landmark in the history of the Bible. Though Alexandrinus represents a primary witness to the biblical text, no modern palaeographical or codicological analysis of the manuscript has been performed: the most in-depth studies of the codex pre-date the great papyrological finds of the 20th century. By executing both palaeographical and codicological analyses of the manuscript in light of a modern understanding of the textual history of the Bible and of Hellenistic Greek, and by additionally introducing statistical analysis into what has traditionally been a subjective field of research, this dissertation processes the textual and paratextual data of the manuscript to a degree previously unattained. The focus of the analysis is on the Gospels, which are quite unique in Alexandrinus: they stand at the headwaters of the Byzantine text form; they contain the earliest extant implementation of the Old Greek chaptering system; and the interaction between the unit delimitation and the Eusebian Apparatus in the Gospels is unique among the great uncial manuscripts. However, the analyses extend to both the Old and New Testaments to provide a context in which to study the Gospels. Among the discoveries made in this dissertation, this study overturns the view that a single scribe was responsible for copying the canonical New Testament books and demonstrates that the orthography of the Gospels can no longer be used to argue for the Egyptian provenance of the codex. As the first in-depth study of unit delimitation in the Gospels of Alexandrinus, this work reveals the complex relationship between the paragraphing system, the chaptering structure, and the incorporation of the Eusebian Apparatus from a separate exemplar. Finally, one result of the examination of the Eusebian Apparatus introduces the cascading error as a newly identified category of scribal error.

This work aims to offer a new, reliable edition of Peirol d’Alvergne’s poetry. A troubadour of the “Golden Age” of Old Occitan lyric, Peirol was an extremely successful poet during his time, as the abundance of manuscript witnesses proves. Moreover, while at the origins of vernacular lyric text and music were considered indissoluble, extant troubadour melodies are exceedingly rare. As Peirol is one of the few poets whose texts survive largely accompanied by musical notation, the edition is devoted specifically to this part of his corpus. The edition strives to go beyond the so-called Bédierian and Lachmannian perspectives of Medieval text editing: if each manuscript witness has the dignity of a «Text» that existed in time, it is also true that an edition that neglects a scrupulous study of the manuscript tradition is abandoning all efforts of deepening our knowledge of Medieval literature. For these reasons, on the one hand the text provides an extensive argumentation regarding the more than thirty manuscripts sources – both in their material aspects and in their mutual genetic relationships – and a commentary on literary issues and philological critical nodes; on the other, the reader will be able to consult the interpretative edition of all witnesses, along with every component of the philological process: diplomatic transcriptions, collations and edition of the melodies.

The drafts of the novel The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis (1984), by the portuguese writer José Saramago (1922-2010), offer a good opportunity to study the author\'s creative method in the light of Textual and Genetic Criticism. Through the gathering, organization and interpretation of editing marks left on the paper by the writer additions, suppressions, substitutions, inversions of words and statements, etc. it is possible to approach the editorial process that gave rise to the work. So that, in the form of a genetic and critical edition with facsimiles, the comparison between the original text and the text established in the first edition (editio princeps) helps to define the criteria that guided the interventions of the author, showing that not all changes in the original document were accepted by the printed version.

This research aims to: a) reproduce the manuscript Diario de navegação of Theotonio Joze Juzarte with facsimile and paleographic editions, line by line; b) point out the semanticsyntactic and semantic-lexical variants of the Uspiana Brasil 500 anos issue as related to the above manuscript, and the copy in Portugal (Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal) relative to the document in Brazil. To achieve these objectives, guided by the theoretical and methodological principles of textual criticism - in Cambraia (2005) and Spina (1997), the historical context was investigated; the codicological and paleographic analysis was briefly proceeded; pictures were scanned; the whole manuscript was scanned, according to the paleographic rules edition; the survey of the variants that affect the meaning of the text in Brazil was performed and commentated. These variants occur mostly by omission or by substitution of graphemes, words, syntagms, and phrases - model reading errors (paleographic); memorization (text retention) of prior dictation. The research revealed a number of variants (semantic, syntactic, and semantic-lexical) that enabled a variety of comments, proving that rigor is still missing in the preparation of editions in Brazil.

This reasearch proposes an in depth analysis of Convivio a work which Dante Alighieri wrote in the first years of the XIV century in order to show its importance in the Dantesque work and in the Italian literature. In a first moment, some problems concerning the work are presented, such as the language of its composition, the odes to philosophy as mans saviour and the battle against common sense in respect to the nobility of the individual. We chose to give privilege to the authors perspective, which builds the text from a self-comment to three of his doctrinal songs composed in his youth and brought back to the public eye in his first years of political exhile. In a second moment, this work presents a full translation of Convivio, always aiming at keeping Dantes supposed voice in most part of the matters stated above. Since this is the Dantesque text that brings more discussions as far as its establishment is concerned, the translation is carried out from the critical edition of Franca Brambilla Ageno (1995). However, notes were written to show the main textual variations defended by other students of Dantes work and editors, especially in the XIX and XX centuries. Therefore, the present work aims at suggesting the importance of the philological discussion in the field of the Dantesque studies carried out in Brazil, which is essential due to the absence of original statements that confirm the real intention of Dantes words.

▼ At a time marked by controversy over the resumption of the novel and the beginning of Proust's influence in Catalonia in the late twenties, Xavier Benguerel's early novels are marked by these coordinates and also represent the efforts of a young writer to draw an own style. The author starts from his own literary and cultural tradition that is brought by his fami I y, school and social environment, and incorporates several innovative elements, among which he can find an especially valid psychological model, to evocate and recreate a world that he knows is going to become extinct. Popular culture, their most personal experiences and symbolist poetry come to enrich their literary possibilities always in Catalan. Precisely the study and analysis of the development in the first eight novels is the
subject of my thesis in order to see the way he works, the constants in his early production, his consolidation as a creator of novels and the reception of his works among his readers.
With his first novel, Pagines d'un adolescent, he begins to outline his personal knowledge of the world through a series of autobiographical elements and a style steeped in lyricism that constitute the bases of his novels. In La vida d'Olga, El teu secret and Suburbi, Benguerel continues the work begun on the construction of the novel of formation, with poetic style, autobiographical elements and a progressive evolution within the framework of the psychological novel. In the forties, when he minimally saves the vicissitudes of war and exile, he resumes writing and offers titles such as La mascara, L'home dins el mirall, La familia Rouquier and La veritat del foc. At the end of exile, with Rouquier Family, characterized by a retrospective view rooted in the past before the Civil War and by the narrative tendencies of Catalan literature in the first decades of the twentieth century, Benguerel recovers the memory of his lost world, eluding the reality of exile.
In conclusion, Benguerel’s aesthetic thinking and novel work, 1929-1953, draw two major stages, training and renewal of literary, marked by the deep crisis that involves walking in exile. However, the studied novel corpus shows some common and
uniform features which coincide to form a psychologist set with a poetic and an autobiographical backdrop.

▼ This thesis is concerned with the pseudo-Hesiodic Aspis, also known as the Scutum or Shield of Herakles (Heracles). It is divided into two halves: the Introduction, consisting of four chapters, is followed by detailed line-by-line commentary on a portion of the Greek text. Chapter I surveys the evidence for the poem's origins and dating before moving on to its scholarly reception since Wolf. It then argues that, for a proper understanding of the Aspis, the methodologies of oral poetics must be balanced with an awareness of its responses to fixed texts (in particular the Iliad). Chapter II examines the author as a poet within the oral tradition, focussing on: narrative style and structuring; type-scenes; similes; poetic ethos; the poem's position relative to the Hesiodic corpus; the use of formular language; and the growth of the poem in the author's hands. These problems are most fruitfully approached by taking account of the interplay of tradition on the one hand and of allusion to specific texts on the other. Wider points about the advanced stages of the oral tradition also emerge; in particular, from an analysis of narrative inconsistencies in the Aspis it is suggested that writing played a role in the poem's composition. Chapter III positions the poet within the literary tradition: his interactions with other songs and tales are sometimes sophisticated engagements of a kind more often detected in Hellenistic and Roman poetry. The presentation of the protagonist of the Aspis evinces the poet's skilful handling of myth, here manipulated for political purposes. Chapter III concludes with a survey of the poem's reception in early art and in literature up to Byzantine times. In Chapter IV the central section of the poem, the description of Herakles' shield (vv. 139-320), is examined in detail, both in relation to the Homeric Shield of Achilles and within the context of the Aspis. The second half of the thesis comprises a critical edition of and lemmatic commentary on vv. 139-237.

▼ This thesis aims to solve the apparent problem of the frequent repetitions in Lucretius' De Rerum Natura (DRN). Verbal repetitions of many different lengths pervade DRN, and are noted in the scholarship. Yet a consensus has not been reached as to their purpose and function, or even if they rightly belong in the text. Multi-linear repetitions are viewed as a temporary stop-gap which Lucretius would have removed or adjusted had he lived long enough to effect it; or as later interpolations; while shorter repetitions are underplayed or even ignored altogether. But repetitions and internal allusions in DRN are part of a purposeful, meaningful didactic and rhetorical strategy, and they form much of the intellectual structure of the poem. These internal connections combine in DRN to form a remarkably complex intratextual network. The thesis argues that repetition is a crucial way in which Lucretius conveys his arguments and persuades the reader to pursue a rational life. Chapter 1 analyses the ways in which Lucretius' epic predecessors used repetition and how Lucretius may have applied these models. Chapter 2 looks at the internal evidence for the alleged unfinished state of the poem and examines the function of long repetitions in DRN. Chapter 3 investigates the rhetorical background to and functions of different kinds of repetition in DRN. Chapter 4 explores the didactic and psychological effects of repetitions and internal allusions. Chapter 5 shows how repetition creates an image of the world Lucretius describes: just as Lucretius tells us that atoms and compounds make up different substances depending on their arrangement in combination, so repetitions perform different functions and produce different outcomes depending on their placement in the text. Throughout the poem, repetition serves again and again to reinforce Lucretius' message, creating argumentative unity, and bringing order from chaos.

▼ This study seeks to gain an understanding about the scribal tendencies observed in the Fourth Gospel in Codex Alexandrinus using the method of isolating and classifying singular readings similar to what was first proposed by Colwell, and later modified by Royse and others. In addition to singular readings made before corrections, this study considers singular readings in relation to punctuation markers and line breaks. First, a brief introduction to Codex Alexandrinus is given. Second, the method used to undertake this study is set forth and explained. Third, each singular reading in the Fourth Gospel in Codex Alexandrinus is listed under each respective group in which it is classified, the text of the exemplar is reconstructed if possible and each singular reading is discussed. Finally, the resulting data are analyzed and conclusions are given regarding the tendencies of the scribe responsible for the Fourth Gospel in Codex Alexandrinus. In general, this thesis demonstrates that the strongest tendency of the scribe was that of omission; the scribe was reluctant to add or to harmonize. Harmonizations, when they do occur, are never corrected. Both punctuation and line breaks often afforded the opportunity for the scribe to become distracted and to commit error.

▼ This thesis critiques contemporary Latter-day Saint scholarly efforts to validate the historicity of the Book of Mormon through
textual criticism by presupposing its historic authenticity, then combing the text for evidence of literary elements that may suggest ancient Hebrew authorship. Chapter 2 surveys current Latter-day Saint scholarship and arguments for internal evidence in support of the historicity of the Book of Mormon. Chapter 3 assesses the importance of King David’s influence over the biblical and non-biblical Hebrew cultural and religious identity to determine the likelihood and anticipated portrayal of the king’s appearance in the Book of Mormon. Given the Book of Mormon’s scant and peculiar nature of references to the fabled king, this chapter also argues that a competing testimony against the book’s historicity is produced. Chapter 4 offers concluding remarks.

▼ This dissertation is an examination of the MT and LXX versions of Nehemiah 11-12. Nehemiah 11-12 includes material that focuses on the people who settled in Jerusalem, a catalog of settlements around the region of Judah, and lists of temple personnel in Jerusalem. These chapters in Nehemiah also contain a narrative of the dedication of the walls as well as a description of the people connected to the dedication ceremony in Jerusalem. Scholars have noted that the lists in Nehemiah 11-12 are particularly problematic when compared to other lists in Ezra and Nehemiah, such as Ezra 2//Nehemiah 7, and Nehemiah 3, since much of the material is unique to these two chapters. Thus, several scholars have attempted to reconcile the
textual discrepancies between Nehemiah 11-12 and other lists in Ezra and Nehemiah.
Little is said, however, concerning the
textual divergences that are present within Nehemiah 11-12. The material is preserved in the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) of Nehemiah and the Greek Septuagint (LXX) of 2 Esdras, of which the MT preserves the longer version. These
textual divergences are significant since Nehemiah 11-12 contain names and positions of temple personnel, areas of settlement, and a narrative of the events surrounding the rededication of the walls, which are commonly used in modern scholarly discussions of Jerusalem during the Persian period. In fact, any discussion of the cultic institutions in Jerusalem, during this important period in Judean history, must consider the lists in Nehemiah 11-12.
In this study, I examine the lists in MT and LXX Nehemiah 11-12 for the purpose of ascertaining the base lists, or what reflects the earliest traditions of these different types of lists and genealogies. This investigation has two main components: A detailed study of the texts and a detailed study of the archaeological sites. As a result of this analysis, I argue that the various lists within Nehemiah 11-12, as fully developed in the MT, reflect a Maccabean reality retrojected into Persian Period Judah. The LXX retains aspects of late-Persian and Hellenistic period lists since key genealogies continue for several generations. But ultimately, the LXX preserves the earlier material. This research is significant for any scholars studying lists in Ezra and Nehemiah. It is also significant for any scholarly examination attempting to reconstruct the composition of the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.

▼ This thesis aims to present a new critical edition of the first section (anuvāka) of book (kāṇḍa) 17 of the Atharvaveda Paippalāda, a corpus of religious hymns and magical incantations dated to the late second millenium BCE, which furnish the second-oldest body of Vedic Indian literature to survive to the present day. This thesis focuses on the first section of book 17, consisting of a great praise hymn addressed to the earth. It strives to improve the previous Indian edition (Bhattacharya 2011), by collating additional manuscript sources, providing a rigorous critical apparatus that includes all the variants found in the manuscritps, as well as an edited text based on established text-critical criteria. In addition, an analysis of the poetic meter of each verse is also provided next to each stanza, as well as a translation and detailed commentary in which I discuss the interpretation of each stanza with notes on its ritual, literary and linguistic context.
Given the limited extension of the extant corpus of Vedic texts, the edition of a new text is of extreme importance, as it not only adds new information to our knowledge of the Vedic language, but also furnishes new precious linguistic material for the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European and the study of the history of its Indo-Iranian branch. Moreover, the acquisition of a philologically reliable version of such a text is a fundamental step towards any future anthropological or religious study on ancient Vedic India.

▼ This study is an exercise in biblical interpretation that focuses on the concepts of readers and meaning. Through the use of both literary and sociological models this study takes a particular given context for Codex Bezae and reads the manuscript in light of that context with three distinct yet intertwined horizons in view: the innertexture, the intertexture, and the extratexture. The innertexture focuses on the level of the text itself and how the text teaches the authorial audience to read. The intertexture focuses on the use of significant intertexts, progenitors that have both influenced and were adapted by Codex Bezae and the authorial audience. The extratexture focuses on the cultural and social texts – social norms – that comprise the baggage the authorial audience brings to the reading process. These three horizons are intertwined to provide a holistic reading that attempts to account for each of these unique levels reading response. After an introductory chapter to explain the purpose, approach, and scope of this study, chapter two develops the areas of the authorial audience's competency into two areas: (1) external knowledge the reader is expected to bring to the text; and (2) internal knowledge the reader gains during the reading process. This chapter then traces the historical economy of knowledge of the authorial audience. Chapter three develops the authorial audience's narrative economy of and concludes with an assessment of the reader and proposal for the exegetical work of this project. Chapters four and five set the reading methodology into practice by examining the major character in the first half of Acts: Peter. These two chapters examine how the authorial audience would respond in a cumulative reading to this significant character and his role in the text given a cumulative reading strategy. Chapter six concludes this project by summarizing the findings of the previous chapters.

▼ This thesis takes Contini’s 1965 study ‘Un’interpretazione di Dante’, and its discussion of repeated lines and part-lines, as its point of departure in order to pursue new understanding of the compositional processes of Dante’s Commedia. It shows how the repetition of similar items, or ‘figures’, relates to orality both in a transmissional, or textual-critical sense, as well as in a compositional, or oral-formulaic, sense. Recollected language in the poem is discovered to be more pervasive than hitherto thought, and this data is then interrogated, revealing a conception of heterogenous units of rhythm and syntax susceptible of re-use. This challenges the frameworks for prosodic description that have been used to date to describe the poem, while setting up a new historical understanding of rhythm as ‘shape’. These intertwined rhythmical-syntactical units, revealed through line-by-line comparison of the entire poem, are then shown to be historically emplaced – a product of the language-learning practices of the medieval grammatica. Figurae uerborum, a medieval conception of syntax and rhythm belonging to the grammatica, and Contini’s ‘figure ritmiche’ together raise an interpretive challenge: they ask for an autonomous way of speaking about achievements of syntax and rhythm, with reference to new critical categories – particularly memorability and authority. A final section proposes a rhythmical-critical experiment: a practical-critical analysis of a specific rhythmical shape, exploring how the new compositional dynamics discovered in the course of the thesis change how the critic relates to the newly conceived poetic object. From medieval grammarians to twentieth-century philologists, this thesis uncovers a tradition of thought that sees rhythm not as an accident of poetic language, but as a grammatical phenomenon, best exemplified in the poets.

▼ In 1941 a large cache of papyri preserving the writings of Origen and Didymus the Blind were discovered in Tura, Egypt. 43 years later 22 signatures from the Tura papryi containing Ps. 26:10–29:2, 36:1–3 from Didymus the Blinds' commentary on Psalms were acquired by Brigham Young University. These signatures remain unpublished at present. This paper examines Didymus' use of the New Testament in this hitherto unpublished section of his commentary and seeks to reevaluate past scholarship on the New Testament text of Didymus in light of this new data. In addition to providing an inventory of all the New Testament references and significant textual variants used by Didymus in this section of his commentary, this paper will also analyze the consistency, or lack thereof, with which Didymus referenced the New Testament throughout his five Tura commentaries. This analysis will show that previous conclusions on the New Testament text of Didymus the Blind need to be reevaluated in a manner that takes into account the significant lack of consistency with which he referenced the New Testament in his classroom lectures as opposed to his published works that were intended for circulation.

▼ This dissertation considers the life and art of Osip Mandelstam in the 1930s, under the aspect of a disjunction between Mandelstam's posthumous image and the biographical evidence that emerged between 1993 and 2010. It traces this disjunction not solely to prior lack of information but also to the moral ambiguities that complicate the reception of this biographical material.
Among the chief difficulties of Mandelstam's biography is his testimony to the OGPU, in which Mandelstam gave the names of those among his friends to whom he had recited his "Stalin Epigram." Close analysis of the exact words of the interrogation protocols, along with memoir evidence, is used to establish that the protocols constitute digests of information elicited previously by coercion. This conjecture is supported by reading the relevant parts of Nadezhda Mandelstam's memoirs under the aspect of the double bind – a pathogenic social situation studied by Gregory Bateson and described in structure and in its potential for inducing psychosis. Mandelstam's composition of the "Ode" to Stalin is considered in the light of new evidence about his exile and its effects on the poet's state of mind.
The dissertation proceeds largely by scrutinizing the language of witnesses and their interpreters, of poets, understood as witnesses of truths available to the creative imagination, and of critics, the interpreters of poets and witnesses of the workings of poems and language. The idea of witness literature is considered in relation to the concept of textual witnesses, in the editorial sense, and to a specific instance of the latter in the marginalia of Nadezhda Mandelstam.
Because this study must find a footing in the English language while attending closely to the Russian, it makes recourse to poets and critics who wrote in English, whose judgments and sensibilities help establish a broader frame of reference for a discussion focused on Stalin's Russia. Geoffrey Hill's particular artistic engagement with Mandelstam is contemplated as an instance of a special kind of bearing witness – the witness of imagination.

▼ In this dissertation, I investigate the textual tradition of the Cretan tragedy Erofili by Georgios Chortatsis (16th century). The play, accompanied by a set of four Interludes, has survived in three manuscripts and two editions, all originating from the 17th century. All the witnesses are examined and presented thoroughly, both as autonomous texts and in comparison to each other. The examination of each witness separately sheds light not only on the history of the transmission of Erofili, but also to the production of manuscripts and printed books in Crete, the Heptanese and Venice in general. As far as the condition of the text is concerned, three witnesses preserve the most reliable texts: the second edition and the two manuscripts originating from Crete. The investigation of their relationship shows that two groups can be identified: one includes the two Cretan manuscripts and another one the three other witnesses. Νo important alterations in the plot and the sequence of events are found, so the textual variation concerns mainly the phrasing. There are indications that variation among the witnesses might have resulted from revisions by the playwright himself. The evaluation of the two groups of witnesses shows that it is not possible to consider one of them as superior, and this leads to the question which would be the most appropriate editorial method. Previous editors have followed the eclectic approach, which has many positive aspects, but cannot help the readers to realize all the stages of the transmission of the play. Since various theoretical approaches have appeared during the last decades, it has been understood that no edition can be called “definitive” and that editions following different methods can address different questions and achieve different aims. Erofili, and other texts with a rich and complicated textual tradition, can be edited in various ways and each edition can offer new insight in the history of the production, transmission and reception of the work.

▼ My dissertation, “Early Modern Editors and the Value of Middle English Literature,” examines the emergence of editorial figures in sixteenth-century editions of Sir Isumbras, Robert Henryson’s Fables, John Lydgate’s Serpent of Division, and Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetry. My study argues that the increasing alterity of Middle English texts in the early modern period compelled editorial interventions designed to make the texts accessible as well as to identify, to emphasize, or to establish the texts’ relevance to contemporary audiences. Early editors managed and controlled the contents and appearance of the books in which the older literary texts appeared in order to redefine their value and purpose for a new audience. They accomplished this with practices such as editing the primary text, collecting or contributing paratext, selecting or designing codicological features, as well as through methods I have termed “codicological translation,” “gathering and framing,” and “selective copying and purposeful omission.” By comparing what these editors say they are doing in their prefatory writings to the results of their editorial contributions, my methodology allows me to determine what these early editors believed themselves to be doing, why, and in what context. These insights have significant implications for the study of both early modern book history and literature. Specifically, they contribute to developing academic conversations among critics like Stephanie Trigg, Tim William Machan, and A.E.B. Coldiron concerning the influence and authority of editors and craftspeople in the production of early modern books.

▼ This dissertation explores the transmission of the letters of Pope Leo the Great (pope, 440-461). In Chapter 1, I set out the contours of Leo’s papacy from external sources and from the letters, showing the significance of these letters for understanding his papacy and its context: our vision of the mid-fifth century would be much scantier without them. After discussing the letters in context and as sources, I conclude this chapter by examining the varied editions of his letters from Giovanni Bussi in 1470, through the only full edition, that of the Ballerini brothers in the 1750s, to the partial editions of Eduard Schwartz and Carlos Silva-Tarouca in the 1930s, a tribute to Leo’s enduring importance. Chapter 2 deals in detail with the pre-Carolingian canonical collections of Leo’s letters, beginning with the earliest in the late 400s and early 500s. Through these collections, I trace the ongoing significance of Leo for canon law as well as noting the links between early Italian collections, e.g. Teatina, Sanblasiana, and Quesnelliana, and postulate that one Gallic collection, Corbeiensis, was the source of another, Pithouensis. I also question the concept of a ‘renaissance gélasienne’ while still admitting the importance of this period for canonical activity. Chapter 3 deals with the letter collections gathered in relation to the Council of Chalcedon (451) – the old Latin version, Rusticus’ version, and the later Latin text, assessing their relationships and importance for our knowledge of Leo as well. Chapter 4 is an exploration of Leo’s letters through the Carolingian and post-Carolingian Middle Ages. The Carolingian explosion of manuscripts is the most important assessed, and I deal with Leo’s various collections in the period, especially Pseudo-Isidore, and demonstrate their relationships and those between them and the earlier collections. To give the reader a sample of the editorial implications of my scholarship, I include as an appendix an edition of Ep. 167 with an apparatus detailing the most significant manuscripts and a translation of my edition as a second appendix. This popular letter exists in different recensions, so it serves an important key to Leo’s text criticism. The third appendix is a conspectus of the letters.

▼ This dissertation traces the tradition of Orator, Cicero’s late work on oratorical style, through the Middle Ages. During that time and due to mechanical losses, the text circulated in a reduced or mutilus form consisting of only the middle half and tail-end of the treatise. An early chapter (1) covers the tradition of the text as fragmentary quotations in other Classical and Late Antique authors. The core of my project, however, is a full codicological examination and catalogue (Appendix C) of the fifty-four surviving manuscript witnesses to this mutilus text. Proceeding from that research, I present the stemmatic relationships of the manuscripts, the geographic and chronological spread of the text, and the creation of two separate vulgate versions by early Italian humanists (Chapters 2 and 3). I present an edition of and commentary on a version of the text created by the early 15th c. schoolmaster Gasparino Barzizza, whose conjectures have long been praised by editors (Appendix A). I edit and classify the marginal and paratextual additions made by medieval readers to show how and why they read the text (Appendix B). Beyond the obvious contributions to
textual criticism and the history of rhetoric, my dissertation demonstrates, through the lens of a single text, many of the various Ciceronianisms and Ciceros that existed in Latin intellectual history in the over a millennium and a half following his death.

▼ Although Musicae artis disciplina (hereafter Musica) has long been associated with the same Italian musico-theorectical tradition that gave birth to the anonymous Dialogus and the writings of Guido of Arezzo, the treatise itself has received little scholarly attention. Perhaps this is due to the lack of a strong textual basis for the treatise; so far, the only published edition of Musica is found in Martin Gerbert’s Scriptores ecclesiastici de musica, which dates from 1784.
This dissertation stands as the first complete critical edition of Musicae artis disciplina. In order to contextualize the treatise, two introductory chapters represent a thorough investigation of Musica’s theories and its rightful place in music theory of the Middle Ages. The first chapter considers notions of pitch, intervals, melodic shape, and musical grammar, as outlined in Musicae artis disciplina. I then situate the treatise within the Italian musico-theoretical school of the early eleventh century by examining the similarities in content, orientation, musical citation, and terminology, and by considering the manuscript tradition of the anonymous Dialogus, the writings of Guido of Arezzo, and Musicae artis disciplina. Contrary to current theories regarding Musica’s origin, I argue that the treatise was likely written in the mid-eleventh century, after the Dialogus and treatises of Guido of Arezzo.
The third chapter features an analysis of Musica’s textual tradition, complete with a stemma textuum. Musica survives today in six known medieval manuscripts (five of which contain the complete text of the treatise) and in Gerbert’s edition, which was based on a manuscript that is no longer extant. Each of these sources is examined in detail, and a full codicological description is provided for each manuscript. An examination of common and separative errors in each witness is then used as the basis for a stemma textuum; although the lines of affiliation are somewhat indistinct due to high levels on contamination, I contend that these witnesses fall into two families, both of which stem from a single source that is no longer extant. The dissertation concludes with a complete critical edition of Musicae artis disciplina.
