Le processus du traitement de la parole est latéralisé au niveau cortical. En effet la théorie de l’échantillonnage asymétrique suggère que le signal acoustique est segmenté sous forme d’unités discrètes, et ensuite traité par les deux cortex auditifs non primaires en utilisant des fenêtres d’intégrations respectivement adaptées aux traitements des modulations lentes et rapides du signal de la parole. L’objectif de cette thèse était d’étudier les concepts de cette théorie au moyen de deux approches (psychophysique et neurophysiologique), en s’intéressant à l’activation corticale dans les deux hémisphères en fonction de la nature du signal auditif présenté. Les résultats révèlent que les scores d’intelligibilité de ces stimuli sont plus importants quand les modulations rapides arrivent au cortex auditif gauche et les modulations lentes arrivent au cortex auditif droit. Les résultats de l’IRMf démontrent une interaction entre l’enveloppe des stimuli présentés et les rythmes corticaux. Les deux cortex auditifs présentaient des asymétries inter-hémisphériques en réponse à ces stimuli. En outre, l’activité neuronale augmente avec les performances. Dans l'ensemble, les résultats de nos études vont dans le sens des prédictions de la théorie d’échantillonnage asymétrique. Nous supposons que, l’application des effets de la théorie de la latéralisation auditive dans le traitement du signal auditif pourrait améliorer la perception de la parole chez les personnes sourdes profonds en développant les stratégies de codage des Implants cochléaire de manière à les alignées sur les propriétés corticales d’échantillonnages intrinsèques

Speech perception consists of a set of bilateral computations that take continuously varying acoustic waveforms as input and generate discrete representations. Hypothesis of ‘asymmetric sampling in time’, suggests that auditory functional asymmetries can be explained by differences in temporal sampling between the two auditory cortices. We suggest that asymmetry in auditory cortical oscillations could play a role in speech perception by fostering hemispheric triage of information across the two hemispheres. Due to this asymmetry, fast speech temporal modulations, could be best perceived by the left auditory cortex, while slower modulations would be better captured by the right one. The aim of this thesis was to study and to test the validity of the predictions of the AST theory by investigating psychophysical and neurophysiological approach. They focus on the cortical activation in both hemispheres according to the nature of the auditory signal presented to both ears. Our results show that when we provide a different part of the speech envelope to each ear, word recognition is facilitated when the temporal properties of speech match the rhythmic properties of auditory cortices. Nos recherches ont porté sur l'étude des indices d'orientation (sonores et verbaux) de l'attention auditive dans une situation d'écoute dichotique au cours du développement. Quatre expériences ont été proposées à des enfants âgés de 8 à 12 ans ainsi qu'à des adultes. Si les deux types d'indices permettent aux populations adultes d'orienter efficacement leur attention vers leurs deux oreilles pour identifier les stimuli cibles et pour résoudre les conflits cognitifs induits par les conditions d'orientation, en revanche, seuls les enfants de plus de 9 ans utilisent les indices verbaux pour orienter efficacement leur attention et résoudre les conflits cognitifs. L'ensemble des résultats suggère (a) que les capacités d'orientation de l'attention se développent en synergie avec le développement cérébral (maturation du cortex préfrontal qui connait une accélération vers 9 ans) et (b) que des indices verbaux favorisent une orientation efficace de l'attention des enfants de moins de 9 ans ainsi que des performances élevées d'identification des stimuli dans leurs deux oreilles. Nous avançons l'hypothèse selon laquelle le rôle facilitateur des indices verbaux résulterait de la pré-activation des processus top-down qu'ils suscitent. En effet, les processus top-down s'avèrent être nécessaires à un contrôle attentionnel de qualité. Ainsi, la présentation de ces indices favoriserait l'activation de ces processus, qui sont difficilement sollicités par les jeunes enfants. L'immaturité du cortex pré-frontal des enfants de moins de 9 ans pourrait expliquer les difficultés d'activation spontanée.

Our work focused on the study of auditory orienting attention cues (with tone cues and verbal cues) in dichotic listening situations across development. Four experiments were carried out with 8 to 12 years old children and with adults. If adults appeared to benefit from the use of tone cues as much as the use of verbal cues to improve their performance of identification in both ears, and thus to improve their cognitive control, however, only 9 years old children took advantage of verbal cues to orient more efficiently their attention and resolve cognitive conflicts. Below this age, only tones cues helped the children to orient and control their attention to the indicated ear.Altogether our results reveal that (a) auditory orienting capacities develop in synergy with cerebral development (the maturation of the prefrontal cortex increases at around 9 years of age), and that (b) verbal cues lead to an efficient orientation of attention and high performance of identification in both ears, even under the age of 9.We suggest that the facilitator role of verbal cues could result from the pre-activation of the top-down processes that they involve. Indeed, top-down processes are essential for cognitive control. Therefore, the presentation of this type of cues would enhance the activation of processes that are not so easily recruited by young children. No estado do CearÃ, nÃo se tem conhecimento da aplicaÃÃo de testes de toxicidade, quer com esgoto sanitÃrio, quer com esgoto industrial. Assim, o presente trabalho objetivou implantar o cultivo e o teste de toxicidade aguda com o organismo-teste Daphnia magna no LaboratÃrio de Saneamento (LABOSAN) da Universidade Federal do CearÃ (UFC), conforme Norma Brasileira 12713/2004. Com base nas recomendaÃÃes desta norma, conseguiuse cultivar e realizar ensaios de sensibilidade e testes de toxicidade com D. magna em efluentes domÃsticos e industriais. Devido Ã quantidade insuficiente de neonatos gerados no inÃcio do cultivo, elaborou-se curva de crescimento das algas que foram utilizadas como alimento: Pseudokirchneriella subcaptata (ex- Selenastrum capricornutum), Scenedesmus subspicatus e Spirulina platensis, fundamentais para o estudo sobre a reproduÃÃo de D. magna, quando submetida a trÃs diferentes dietas. Neste estudo foi observado que a quantidade de alimento influenciou diretamente na reproduÃÃo de D. magna. Tanto a P. subcaptata, quanto a S. subspicatus (algas indicadas pela NBR 12713/2004) se mostraram adequadas na alimentaÃÃo de D. magna na concentraÃÃo de 6,5E+06 cÃls./mL.Daphnia . TambÃm comprovou-se que a S. platensis nÃo Ã tÃo adequada para a alimentaÃÃo de D. magna quanto as indicadas pela Norma Brasileira. A carta controle foi elaborada e o valor de CE 5024h mÃdio obtido foi comparado com valores reportados na literatura, comprovando que a carta poderia ser utilizada e que os organismos do cultivo estiveram dentro do intervalo de seguranÃa no perÃodo dos testes. Os resultados dos testes de toxicidade com o efluente real contendo corantes revelaram que o sistema anaerÃbio, alÃm de reduzir cor e DQO, contribuiu para a detoxificaÃÃo do efluente e que o pÃs-tratamento aerÃbio aumentou a toxicidade. Por fim, os testes de toxicidade com esgoto tÃxtil mostraram-se ser uma ferramenta imprescindÃvel na avaliaÃÃo de subprodutos gerados em condiÃÃes anaerÃbias e aerÃbias, melhorando o entendimento dos processos de tratamento.

In the CearÃ state, as far as we know, toxicity tests were never conducted before, either with sewage or industrial wastewater. Thus the present work aimed to implement the cultivation and application of acute toxicity tests with Daphnia magna as test-organism in the Laboratory of Sanitation (LABOSAN) of the Federal University of CearÃ (UFC), according to the Brazilian guideline NBR 12713/2004. Based on the recommendations of this guideline, it was possible to cultivate and conduct sensibility experiments and toxicity tests with D. magna with both sewage and industrial wastewaters. ▼ Models (both physical and numerical) of the friction stir (FS) welding process are used to develop a greater understanding of the influence of independent process parameters on dependent process output variables, such as torque, power, specific weld energy, peak temperature, cooling rates and various metallurgical factors (e.g., grain size and precipitates). An understanding of how the independent process parameters influence output variables and ultimately their effect on resultant properties (e.g., strength, hardness, etc..) is desirable. Most models developed have been validated primarily for aluminum alloys with relatively small amounts of experimental data. Fewer models have been validated for steels or stainless steels, particularly since steels and stainless steels have proven more challenging to friction stir than aluminum alloys. The Gleeble system is also a powerful tool with the capability to perform thermomechanical simulations in a known and controlled environment and provide physical representation of resultant microstructure and hardness values. The coupling of experimental data and physical simulated data can be extremely useful in assessing the capabilities of friction stir numerical process models. The overall approach is to evaluate Isaiah an existing three-dimensional finite element code developed at Cornell University by comparing against experimental and physically-simulated data to determine how well the code output relates to real FS data over a range of nine processing conditions. Physical simulations replicating select thermomechanical streamline histories were conducted to provide a physical representation of resultant metallurgy and hardness. Isaiah shows promise in predicting qualitative trends over a limited range of parameters and is not recommended for use as a predictive tool but rather a complimentary tool, Once properly calibrated, the Isaiah code can be a powerful tool to gain insight into the process, strength evolution during the process and coupled with a texture evolution model may also provide insight into microstructural and texture evolution over a range for which it is calibrated.

▼ Uvod: Hepatička osteodistrofija je termin koji obuhvata metaboličke bolesti kosti udružene sa hroničnim bolestima jetre. U alkoholnoj cirozi (AC) jetre postoji visoka zastupljenost deficijencije vitamina D proporcionalna stepenu disfunkcije jetre, ali njena uloga u patogenezi hepatičke osteodistrofije nije dovoljno objašnjena. Nivo 25(OH)D odražava status vitamina D. Kod AC jetre izmenjena je metabolička aktivnost kosti i suprimirano je formiranje kosti što dovodi do smanjenja koštane mase. U centru interesovanja je postizanje optimalnog statusa vitamina D. Stavovi o suplementaciji vitaminom D kod AC jetre nisu jasno definisani. Cilj rada: Utvrditi nivo vitamina D, ispitati metaboličku aktivnost kosti i mineralnu gustinu kosti kod bolesnika sa AC jetre. Utvrditi efekte suplementacije sa 1000 IU vitamina D3 na dan tokom godinu dana u odnosu na metaboličku aktivnost kosti i mineralnu gustinu kosti kod ispitivanih bolesnika. Bolesnici i metode: Istraživanje je sprovedeno na Klinici za gastroenterologiju i hepatologiju Kliničkog centra Vojvodine u Novom Sadu kao prospektivna intervencijska studija sa primenom suplementacije sa 1000 IU vitamina D3 na dan kod bolesnika sa AC jetre. Grupu bolesnika koja je uključena u istraživanje (1) činilo je 70 bolesnika muškog pola sa dijagnozom AC jetre. Bolesnici su imali četiri pregleda (P), odnosno tačke studije: P1-uključivanje bolesnika i započinjanje suplementacije vitaminom D; P2, P3 i P4 posle tri, šest i dvanaest meseci suplementacije vitaminom D, redom. Prilikom svakog pregleda rađene su analize funkcije jetre, metabolizma kosti i statusa vitamina D. Na početku (P1) i na kraju istraživanja (P4) vršeno je merenje mineralne gustine kosti (BMD) DXA metodom. Gubitak bolesnika od P1 do P4 bio je dvadeset, na različitim tačkama studije. Prvi deo istraživanja odnosi se na Grupu bolesnika koja je uključena u istraživanje (1) i završila prvi pregled (P1). Pedeset bolesnika je završilo kompletno istraživanje po predviđenom protokolu i oni se zbog realizacije svih pregleda i ponovljenih merenja posmatraju kao: Grupa bolesnika koja je završila istraživanje (2). Rezultati: (1): Kod bolesnika sa AC jetre utvrđena je deficijencija vitamina D, snižen nivo osteokalcina, normalni nivoi CrossLapsa, PTH, ukupnog i jonizovanog kalcijuma, fosfora i magnezijuma. Osteopeniju je imalo 42,65% a osteoporozu 14,71% ispitanika. Kod svih ispitanika najniži BMD izmeren je na vratu femura. (2): Suplementacija vitaminom D dovela je do značajnog porasta 25(OH)D. U odnosu na osteokalcin konstatovana je pozitivna razlika vrednosti P1/P4, iako je nivo ostao ispod donje granice normale. Kod nivoa CrossLapsa i PTH razlika P1/P4 je negativna, ali su nivoi u sva četiri merenja u okviru referentnih vrednosti. Na lumbalnoj kičmi došlo je do poboljšanja BMD za 0.87%, a pogoršanja su na vratu femura -1.87 % i kuku -1.65%. Konstatovano je i poboljšanje funkcije jetre. Ce travail a eu pour objectif de répondre aux problématiques inhérentes aux tests multiples dans le contexte des essais cliniques. A l’heure actuelle un nombre croissant d’essais cliniques ont pour objectif d’observer l’effet multifactoriel d’un produit, et nécessite donc l’utilisation de co-critères de jugement principaux. La significativité de l’étude est alors conclue si et seulement si nous observons le rejet d’au moins r hypothèses nulles parmi les m hypothèses nulles testées. Dans ce contexte, les statisticiens doivent prendre en compte la multiplicité induite par cette pratique. Nous nous sommes consacrés dans un premier temps à la recherche d’une correction exacte pour l’analyse des données et le calcul de taille d’échantillon pour r = 1. Puis nous avons travaillé sur le calcul de taille d’´echantillon pour toutes valeurs de r, quand les procédures en une étape, ou les procédures séquentielles sont utilisées. Finalement nous nous sommes intéressés à la correction du degré de signification engendré par la recherche d’un codage optimal d’une variable explicative continue dans un modèle linéaire généralisé

This work aimed to meet multiple testing problems in clinical trials context. Nowadays, in clinical research it is increasingly common to define multiple co-primary endpoints in order to capture a multi-factorial effect of the product. The significance of the study is concluded if and only if at least r null hypotheses are rejected among the m null hypotheses. In this context, statisticians need to take into account multiplicity problems. We initially devoted our work on exact correction of the multiple testing for data analysis and sample size computation, when r = 1. Then we worked on sample size computation for any values of r, when stepwise and single step procedures are used. Finally we are interested in the correction of significance level generated by the search for an optimal coding of a continuous explanatory variable in generalized linear model.

▼ As a result of the national and international competition in milk production often negative consequences for the health of dairy cows have been observed. Parturient paresis belongs in the milk economy to the most frequent peripartal disease. At begin of lactation, dairy cows are not able to cover the sudden and high requirement of calcium with physiological homeostatic mechanisms of the body. The negative economic consequences of parturient paresis led to many attempts to develop a successful prophylaxis of this disease. One option is the supplementation with vitamin D or its metabolites, which are decisive for the regulation of Ca-metabolism. However, vitamin D or its metabolites can only be used, if a counter-regulation can be avoided by application of the right dose and the right length of time. It was therefore the intention of the present study to optimize the dose and the duration of supplementation with 25(OH)D3. In experiment 1 cows were supplemented with 0.5-, 1.0- or 2.0 mg 25(OH)D3 per day 3 weeks before expected time of parturition (until parturition). In experiment 2 cows were supplemented with 1.0-, 2.0- or 4.0 mg 25(OH)D3 per day 1 week before expected time of parturition for a maximum of 7 days. The following results were obtained: a) The concentration of 25(OH)D3 in the blood rose according to the dose and time of supplementation. b) The concentration of 1,25(OH)2D3 in the blood did not change before parturition. c) The concentrations of Ca, Mg and P in the blood were not influenced by the supplementation before parturition. d) The concentrations of Ca and 1,25(OH)2D3 showed dose-dependent [25(OH)D3], but not significant changes in the peripartal period. e) Clinical treatment with Ca-infusions in experiment 1 increased with the dose of 25(OH)D3 (0.5-, 1.0- and 2.0 mg). These observations allow the preliminary conclusion, that in spite of unchanged Ca- and 1,25(OH)2D3 – concentrations in the blood before parturition a predisposition was induced, which impairs a rapid regulation of the Ca- homeostasis during time of parturition. It is suggested, that the long time of supplementation is the major cause of this impairment. f) The experimental design of experiment 2 (1.0-, 2.0- and 4.0 mg for 7 days) tried to avoid this possible complication. The obtained results support the conclusion, that the reduced length of supplementation improved the regulation of Ca-homeostasis around parturition. However, the number of cows in each group (à 12) does not allow statements about a successful prophylaxis of milk fever. g) It was not clear, why the postpartal increase of 1,25(OH)2D3 in both experiments was almost the same in all groups, in spite of increasing concentrations of 25(OH)D3. These findings permit the conclusion, that the application of 1.0 mg 25(OH)D3 per day and cow for 1 week does not change the increase of 1,25(OH)2D3 production p.p. negatively. Le polydicyclopentadiène (PDCPD) est un matériau polymère thermodurcissable possédant des propriétés particulièrement intéressantes : il combine une très haute résistance aux chocs, une bonne résistance à la corrosion chimique et possède une température de fléchissement sous charge élevée. Ces caractéristiques permettent d’envisager son utilisation dans des conditions extrêmes comme joint de pipeline pour l’extraction du pétrole offshore. Malgré ses avantages, l’essor de son utilisation est limité par sa sensibilité à l’oxydation en raison de la présence de doubles liaisons sur son squelette. L’'ajout d’additifs qui limitent la dégradation du PDCPD en inhibant son oxydation est donc nécessaire. Cependant, les additifs classiques sont sujets à la diffusion au sein du matériau à cause de leur faible masse molaire, ce qui limite leur efficacité sur le long terme.Pour pallier ce problème, deux stratégies ont été étudiées : (1) le greffage d’additifs à propriétés antioxydantes sur le squelette du PDCPD par polymérisation par ouverture de cycle par métathèse (ROMP) du dicyclopentadiène (DCPD) avec des comonomères norbornène porteurs de groupements antioxydants ; (2) la ROMP de ces monomères pour synthétiser des additifs de masses molaires élevées moins susceptibles de subir de la diffusion au sein du matériau. Les nouveaux matériaux obtenus à partir de formulations industrielles à base de PDCPD et des monomères et polymères synthétisés ont montré une stabilité supérieure par rapport aux formulations à base d’additifs commerciaux, validant ainsi la pertinence des stratégies mises en œuvre lors de ce travail de thèse.

Polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD) is a thermoset polymer material with particularly interesting properties: it combines high impact resistance, good resistance to chemical corrosion and high heat deflection temperature. These features allow to consider its use in extreme conditions as a pipeline joint for the extraction of offshore oil. However, its use is limited by its oxidation sensibility because of the presence of double bonds in its backbone. Adding additives to PDCPD materials is needed to limit the PDCPD degradation by inhibition of oxidation. However, conventional additives undergo diffusion that decreases their long-term efficacy because of their low molar mass. To address this issue, two strategies were studied: (1) the grafting of additives with antioxidant properties within the backbone by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) with norbornenyl antioxidant-functionalized comonomers; (2) ROMP of these monomers to prepare additives with higher molar masses, which are less likely to undergo diffusion. The original materials obtained from industrial formulations based on PDCPD and the synthesized monomers and polymers have shown a better stability than the formulations based on commercially available additives, confirming the relevance of the strategies implemented in this thesis work.

[pt] Os agrotóxicos são utilizados principalmente nas lavouras e se dispersam no ambiente após aplicação, interferindo na qualidade do ar através da volatilização. Esta é influenciada pelas características do solo, características do agrotóxico, condições climáticas, cobertura vegetal e manejo agrícola. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar com parâmetros geotécnicos quatro solos de diferentes texturas que serviram de base para estudos preliminares de volatilização do herbicida 2,4-D. As propriedades de cada solo são importantes para identificar quais os parâmetros que mais influenciam na volatilização. Estudos foram feitos para desenvolver a metodologia de medição e pesquisar variações de manejo que resultem na menor perda por volatilização. A metodologia adotada utilizou microcosmos preenchidos com os solos previamente acondicionados, simulando a densidade natural. Após a aplicação do 2,4-D, os produtos voláteis foram captados por um processo de aspiração suave para uma resina XAD-2 capaz de sorver o herbicida. O sistema não é fechado para evitar distorções ambientais na temperatura, umidade e no vento, de forma a simular as condições naturais do ambiente. A extração do 2,4-D na resina foi feita pela extração com diclorometano e N-hexano (1:1) e sua quantificação foi realizada através da análise em cromatógrafo líquido com detector UV. A abordagem experimental mostrou que a metodologia utilizada permite grande perda pela ação dos ventos, requerendo um aperfeiçoamento metodológico. Os experimentos em campo foram conduzidos com quatro solos distintos do Rio de Janeiro em que a exposição do herbicida 2,4-D foi feita em duas sucessões distintas: uma com aplicação no início do dia – noite e a outra com aplicação no início da noite – dia, ambas com exposição de 24 horas. Nos cromatogramas das amostras com exposição ao sol foi observado, além do 2,4-D, outro composto em concentrações maiores, indicando possível metabólito. Foi observado que o efeito da umidade intersticial é preponderante sobre os outros parâmetros do solo, como o teor de matéria orgânica, e a volatilização foi maior nos experimentos que começaram no início da manhã comparados aos experimentos iniciados no final da tarde. A captação de voláteis somando os valores medidos na resina e nas espumas de poliuretano mostraram que a máxima volatilização foi no solo arenoso de Tinguá no turno da manhã, enquanto que o mínimo foi no turno da tarde para o mesmo solo. A redução de produtos volatilizados não é só um prejuízo na perda do produto, mas sobretudo uma redução da contaminação aérea, que poderá reduzir a exposição da flora e fauna, assim como a saúde humana.

A Power Transfer Unit (PTU) of an All-Wheel Drive System is a hypoid gear transmission unit that distributes the power from the vehicle transmission to all wheels of the vehicle. This thesis aims at increasing the fidelity of the analytical power loss calculation methods through test data correlation and develop a 1D simulation model that can be used to evaluate the drag losses in the PTU at early design stages. Firstly, the analytical methods to predict the frictional losses and oil churning losses due to the hypoid gearset, rolling bearings and seals immersed in oil are studied. Several drag loss tests with different combinations of internal components, bearing preloads and with/without the presence of oil were previously conducted on the PTU at different speeds and temperatures at zero torque. The power losses are computed in ROMAX Energy and Excel using different analytical methods available in the literature for each component in the PTU. Then the results from the drag loss tests are segregated component-wise for data correlation with the losses evaluated previously. Based on the data correlation, modification factors are introduced for all analytical methods to match the segregated test results. The demand in the automotive industry to reduce time to market is high. Hence, system-level simulation was chosen as a solution to assess the system efficiency at early concept design stage, saving a lot of time and aid the detailed design. 1D simulation technique is used to study the total power loss of the PTU to optimize its design. The thesis is aimed at developing a 1D system model of the PTU in a commercial tool called LMS AMESim, to evaluate the total power loss of the unit. Inbuilt component models from the software library are used to build a sketch of a simplified lumped mass model of the physical system. The model is simulated in a time domain temporal analysis. The total power loss results simulated using AMESim are compared to the efficiency tests results conducted at different torque levels and ROMAX results. Comparisons between the simulations and test data shows that the system model is accurate and can be used in predicting the power losses in the PTU in the early design stages. This model can also be used to study the influential factors through sensitivity analysis of different parameters which can be done as an extension to the current scope of this work.

▼ Introduction: The field of neuropsychology is considered to be fairly new. It uses different psychological tests for various reasons including diagnosis assessment and rehabilitation. However, these tests were developed mostly in western countries and may not be used in other countries easily. Therefore, in order to obtain the best results and use these tests efficiently they need to fit the society and the characteristics of the general population. Aim: Certain demographic characteristics have been identified to have an effect on performance on neuropsychological tests. Education has particularly been known to be both potent and pervasive on neuropsychological tests affecting tests which had for a long time been known not to have educational effects. To find out an accurate measure of educational attainment, reading ability using the Zambia Achievement Test (ZAT) was used. Age equally affects performance on these tests with younger people performing better than older people. Methods: The study was conducted in Lusaka, Kafue, Chongwe and Chibombo districts. A total of 324 Zambians were recruited in the study. They consisted of HIV negative adults from the ages of 20-65 years, from both rural and urban areas of Zambia. They were equally distributed in terms of gender and had a range of 5years to 19years of education. Results:Results showed that reading ability is a better predictor of performance on neuropsychological tests than reported years of schooling. Reading ability had an especially powerful influence on tests in the fluency domain with anR² of 39.8 with a beta weight of 0.352, higher than both age with a beta weight of -.153 and reported years of schooling with a beta weight of .345.; age had a negative correlation with performance on all test domains. Schooling also offered protection against age related decline particularly in the verbal fluency. Conclusion: Reading ability as measured by the Zambia Achievement Test proved to be a better predictor of performance on neuropsychological tests than reported years of schooling. Age also had an effect on the tests indicating that as age increased levels of performance declined. Schooling also offered protection against age related decline.

▼ The psychological testindustry has produced a wide variety of psychological tests that are used by professionals to facilitate measurement and decision-making. Tests are updated and revised periodically in order to remain current, valid and reliable in what is a competitive psychometric industry. Despite the prevalence of test revisions, especially in recent years, a number of authors have commented on the lack of comprehensive guidelines for test revision. Guidelines shouldcover aspects such as what the different types of revision are, when to embark on a revision, whatprocessto followand how test users should use revised tests. Test revision differs from test construction in a number of ways. There are external factors that affect the regularity with which a test should be revised. Test revision also involves more role players than test construction, including the opinions of those test users who may be resistant to any change in the previous test edition. Finally, revised tests sometimes have to contend with requirements from the test publisher who purchased the test or distribution rights from the developer. Test revision is expensive and time consuming, which leaves little scope for experimentation or trial-and-error. The availability of expertise, as well as the human and financial resources required to complete test revisionscan make such projects unaffordable, especiallyforprofessionals indeveloping countries, such as South Africa.It may be more feasible for such professionalsto collaborate with international revision projects. By doing so they cangain experience in test revision, contribute indigenous information that could shapethe revision ofan international test, increase opportunities to engage with international users, and potentially source international funding for research in their own country. The current studydevelopeda comprehensive and practical set of 30 guidelines to assist those involved in test revision. These guidelines were peer-reviewed and refined. Finally, the guidelines were field-tested using a case study of a recently revised ivdevelopmentaltest, the Griffiths III. Professionals from South Africa, including the present researcher,formed part of the international team for the extensive revision of the Griffiths III, which makes this test an ideal case study from both the perspectives of the developed test revision guidelines as well as collaboration of professionals from a developing country in an international test revision. The knowledge gainedfrom the development of guidelines and international collaboration in test revision is reflected on.

▼ Specialized Hauling Vehicles (SHVs) are defined as short heavy trucks within the legal weight limits but induce higher load effects than routine commercial load models. This thesis is consisted of three major parts, 1) investigation of the population, various truck characteristics of SHV traffic fleet and multiple-presence events based on available Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) data, 2) development of statistical models of SHVs for both one-lane and two-lane loading cases, and 3) assessment of live load factors for SHVs for LRFR Strength I Limit State. The first part focuses on processing WIM data. The algorithm for data processing and the WIM database is presented first. The database consists of two sets of data: 1) data from New Jersey, and 2) data from another 21 states across the United States. Based on the data processing results, the statistics of SHV traffic in terms of percentage of entire truck traffic and average daily count at each WIM site were obtained. Also, the frequency distributions of number of axles, gross vehicle weight (GVW) as well as a summary of typical SHV configurations were acquired by assembling the SHV traffic from all sites. The multiple-presence events were also assessed, and the statistics are presented. The second part presents the analysis of load effects of SHVs and the development of statistical models for SHVs. The statistical models consist of three factors: bias ratio, coefficient of variation and probability distribution. Due to the multiple-presence events of SHVs, the models were developed for both one-lane loading case and two-lane loading case. The probability distribution of load effects induced by SHVs on various spans was determined by hypothesis testing. Based on the probability distribution, the maximum load effects over a 5-year period of bridge evaluation were predicted for each site. The site maximum values were then assembled into one dataset and the mean and coefficient of variation were calculated as the statistical parameters for live load. The probability distribution of the site maximum values was also determined by hypothesis testing. In the third part, the statistical models for live loads were used for reliability analysis for existing steel-girder bridges. The load rating factors were obtained for the bridges and plotted against reliability indices for different combinations of SU trucks and ADTTs. The results show that the reliability level provided by the current live load factors are higher than the desired level. The live load factors as well as the live load factors were modified until reliability index equal to 2.5 when rating factor equal to 1 in each plot. ▼ Attention is a broad cognitive function that is thought to be a foundational skill necessary for all other neurocognitive operations. Differences in theoretical orientations have led to a lack of consensus regarding a specific definition of attention. Because attention theories have a direct impact upon cognitive assessments, continued debate has resulted in a failure to establish appropriate tasks which measure attention constructs. The purpose of this study was to determine the concurrent validity of the attention subscales of three commonly administered neurocognitive instruments: the Woodcock Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Abilities (WJ III COG; Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 2001c; Woodcock et al., 2007), the NEPSY: A Development Neuropsychological Assessment (Korkman, Kirk, & Kemp, 1998), and the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS; Delis, Kaplan, & Kramer, 2001). Additionally, this study examined the underlying factor structure of the D-KEFS, NEPSY, and WJ III COG, and their fit with four theories of attention. The four theories which were analyzed are Mirsky and colleagues' (1991) model of attention, the Cattell-Horn-Carroll model of cognitive abilities (CHC theory; McGrew, 2005), the Conceptual Model for School Neuropsychological Assessment (SNP model; Miller, 2007, 2010), and a model which examines tasks based on auditory and visual modalities. Data was extracted from archival case studies submitted to the KIDS, Inc.'s School Neuropsychology Post-Graduate Certification Program, which included a mixed clinical sample of children, age 8 through 12. Correlations were utilized to determine relationships among attention subtests. Some evidence demonstrated similar internal consistency of the attention subtests within both the WJ III COG and the NEPSY. Less evidence was provided in support of the internal validity of the D-KEFS. Relationships between the theories and attention subtests were examined using structural equation modeling. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to determine how well the various attention theories fit with the attention subtests. Results from the CFA, demonstrated the model which assessed attention using visual and auditory modalities indicated the best fit with the sample data when compared to the other models. Limitations of the current investigation as well as suggestions for future studies are also discussed. ▼ Introduction: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare, female-predominant, low-grade metastasizing neoplasm characterized by proliferation of abnormal smooth muscle cells and progressive destruction of lung parenchyma. Improved understanding of the natural history of LAM and identification of prognostic biomarkers can help guide management decisions in this patient population. Methods: Over a three-year period (1998–2001), 246 patients with LAM were enrolled into a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) funded registry at six sites across the United States. Longitudinal data was collected at every 6-12 month intervals until 2003. The data collected included quality of life questionnaires, computed tomography (CT) scan findings, pulmonary function test (PFT) measurements, and serum specimens. These data and samples were subsequently de-identified and stored at the National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI) - an agency that contracts with the NHLBI to store and distribute samples. We obtained the de-identified data and serum specimens collected as part of this registry from the NDRI. In addition, we queried the National Death Index and the United Network for Organ Sharing databases to determine the patients who had either deceased or undergone lung transplantation after enrolling in this registry. A linear mixed effects model was employed to compute the rate of lung function decline and to correlate it with various clinical characteristics and biomarkers such as serum vascular endothelial growth factor-D (VEGF-D). Prognostic variables associated with progression to death/lung transplantation were identified using a Cox proportional hazard model. Results: After excluding patients with unclear diagnosis (n=17) and the patients who had undergone lung transplantation prior to study enrollment (n=12), we analyzed the data from the remaining 217 patients. The average rate of decline of forced expiratory volume in 1-second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) was 89±17 mls/year and 71±57 mls/year, respectively. Rate of decline of FEV1 was significantly negatively impacted by the baseline FEV1 (p<0.0001), FVC (p=0.007), and CT score (p=0.02). Pre-menopausal women declined faster than post-menopausal women (118mls/year versus 74mls/year, p=0.003). Other variables such as serum VEGF-D, spontaneous pneumothorax, and tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) versus sporadic-LAM did not affect the rate of decline of FEV1. From our cohort of 217 patients, 26 patients had died, and 43 patients had received lung transplant prior to the data censor date of 12/31/2014. The 5-, 10-, 15-, and 20-year survival rates were estimated to be 95%, 85%, 75%, and 64%, respectively. Baseline PFTs, the trajectory of PFTs, serum VEGF-D, CT score, and bronchodilator responsiveness on spirometry can predict progression to death/transplant, with baseline PFTs and postmenopausal status being the biggest determinants of future progression to death/transplant. ▼ Aujourd'hui, les logiciels se doivent d'être efficaces, rapide à exécuter, etc. Ils peuvent être configurés dans le but de répondre à des besoins spécifiques donnés par l'utilisateur. De fait, chaque configuration donne lieu à un système unique, spécialisé pour des besoins précis. Le nombre de configurations possible devient tellement grand qu'il est impossible de générer tous les systèmes associés résultant en une impossibilité à évaluer leurs performances dans leur globalité. En plus de cela, différentes exécutions des systèmes sont souvent nécessaire, en utilisant différents cas de tests qui représentent différents contextes, pour évaluer correctement ces performances. Il y a donc un enjeu en terme d'énergie et de temps à pouvoir cibler correctement les configurations intéressantes pour un utilisateur ainsi que les cas de tests pertinents pour évaluer les performances d'un système. A partir de cette première analyse, deux dimensions émergent: la sélection de configurations de systèmes qui permettent par la suite de générer des systèmes respectant les besoins utilisateurs et, d'autre part, la sélection de cas de tests qui permettent d'observer les performances des systèmes dans différents contextes. Nous proposons dans cette thèse de représenter ces deux dimensions comme une matrice (de performance) dans laquelle : une dimension représente les systèmes sélectionnés (avec leur configuration) tandis que l'autre représente l'ensemble des cas de tests à exécuter sur chaque système. Chaque cellule de la matrice est alors le résultat de l'exécution d'un programme sur un cas de test. Les contributions principales de cette thèse sont : premièrement, l'utilisation de techniques d'apprentissage automatique pour spécialiser une ligne de produit logiciels visant à réduire l'espace de configuration pour sélectionner plus facilement une configuration qui satisfasse les besoins utilisateurs. Les utilisateurs doivent donc être capable d'exprimer leurs besoins de telle sorte que l'on se place dans un problème de classification binaire (i.e., permettant de dissocier les configurations qui ont la capacité à respecter ces besoins et les autres configurations qui n'ont pas l'air de pouvoir). Après cela, une technique d'apprentissage automatique est utilisé pour créer un modèle mathématique séparant les deux classes permettant par la suite de spécialiser la ligne de produits logiciel et de proposer des configurations partielles réduisant l'espace de configuration. Au final, ce travail permet de réduire la première dimension de la matrice qui traite des systèmes. Deuxièmement, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode permettant d'évaluer la capacité d'une suite de tests à montrer des différences de performances significatives exécuter par différents programmes qui présentent la même fonctionnalité.
