2. Frey, Holger. Compilation and applications of glacier inventories using satellite data and digital terrain information.

Detailed glacier inventories are key for understanding glacier-climate interactions and assessing the impact of glacier changes on the landscape, the water cycle, and on natural hazards. Satellite data combined with digital elevation models (DEMs) provide a useful means for the compilation of such glacier inventory data. Within this thesis, the suitability of DEMs (with near-global coverage) to determine topographic parameters has been evaluated and found to be appropriate, despite local artifacts in the DEMs. Based on these findings, more than 10,000 glaciers in the western Himalayas have been mapped from optical and microwave sensors in order to close a prominent gap in the global glacier inventory. As a consequence of glacier retreat, new glacier lakes with potential for far-reaching natural disasters can form. A tool for the detection and analysis of such glacier lakes using a semi-automated approach is presented. In relation to this, a multi-level strategy for the identification of sites with potential future lake formation in deglaciating areas has been developed. Overall, this thesis provides a framework for observing and assessing the current situation of glaciers, glacier lakes, and associated hazard potentials, as well as means to develop scenarios of their potential future evolution. Detaillierte Gletscherinventare sind von zentraler Bedeutung für das Verständnis von Gletscher–Klima Wechselwirkungen sowie eine Abschätzung des Einflusses von Gletscheränderungen auf das Landschaftsbild, den Wasserkreislauf und Naturgefahren. Satellitendaten in Kombination mit digitalen Geländemodellen sind ein effizientes Mittel um solche Gletscherinventardaten zu erstellen. In dieser Arbeit wurde dafür erstmals die Eignung von digitalen Geländemodellen mit nahezu globaler Abdeckung zur Ableitung von topographischen Parametern von Gletschern untersucht. Trotz lokalen Artefakten in den Modellen sind beide geeignet. Zusammen mit diesen Erkenntnissen wurden über 10'000 Gletscher im westlichen Himalaya mit optischen und Mikrowellensensoren kartiert und damit eine bedeutende Lücke im globalen Gletscherinventar geschlossen. In der Folge des Gletscherschwundes können sich neue Seen bilden, welche im Falle eines Ausbruchs das Potential für weit reichende Naturkatastrophen haben. Es wurde ein halbautomatischer Ansatz entwickelt, welcher die Identifikation und Analyse solcher Seen ermöglicht. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde zudem eine mehrstufige Strategie entwickelt, die eine Identifikation von Orten zukünftiger Seebildungen erlaubt. Somit bietet diese Arbeit eine Zusammenstellung von Ansätzen für die Beobachtung und Beurteilung der momentanen Situation von Gletschern, Gletscherseen und damit verbundenen Naturgefahren. Mittel zur Erarbeitung von Szenarien ihrer möglichen zukünftigen Entwicklungen werden ebenfalls vorgestellt.
