Inovar não significa apenas dominar uma tecnologia, gerando protótipos e patentes. Precisa-se ir além, introduzir produtos no mercado que façam uso da tecnologia desenvolvida. Um dos desafios, portanto, é garantir a integração entre as tecnologias e o produto desenvolvido, minimizando riscos e maximizando resultados. Os modelos teóricos para descrever a integração apresentam deficiências, discutidas neste trabalho, e há poucos relatos sobre a situação de empresas brasileiras quanto à prática. A revisão bibliográfica, combinada com um estudo de caso, possibilitou a delimitação e descrição dos elementos envolvidos no fenômeno integração tecnologia-produto. Permitiu também identificar dois componentes como fundamentais, denominados de estratégia de sincronização tecnológica e a estratégia de desenvolvimento da inovação. A pesquisa tem por objetivo caracterizar e analisar as estratégias de desenvolvimento da inovação e sincronização tecnológica no contexto dos projetos de produtos inovadores das empresas de base tecnológica filiadas ao Parque Tecnológico de São Carlos. O levantamento (survey) verificou 24 projetos de sucesso, um para cada empresa que participa ou participou do ParqTec, de um total de 35 empresas que projetaram produtos envolvendo hardware e software. As empresas adotam predominantemente a sincronização simultânea e o desenvolvimento da tecnologia origina-se da necessidade de um produto desejado pelo mercado (estratégia top-down). O resultado indica que a grande maioria das empresas não diferencia tecnologia de produto e, portanto, não realiza uma gestão diferenciada e integrada de ambos, o que, segundo a literatura, pode levar a desperdícios de tempo e maior risco na inovação. O trabalho aponta possíveis causas e temas para pesquisas futuras.

Innovation not only master a technology, generating prototypes and patents. We need to go beyond, to introduce products to market that make use of the technology developed. One of the challenges therefore is to ensure the integration of technology and product development in order to minimize risks and maximize the outcome. The theoretical model presents problems of integration, discussed in this work, and there are few reports on the status of national companies in practice. The literature review, combined with a case study, demonstrate the elements involved in technology-product integration phenomenon. It also identified as two key components, called the synchronization strategy and innovation strategy. The research aims to characterize and analyze the innovation and synchronization strategies in the context of innovative product designs of technology-based firms affiliated to the Technological Park of São Carlos. The survey found 24 successful projects for each company that participates or participated in ParqTec or participated in a total of 35 companies that designed products involving hardware and software. Até há bem pouco tempo o hidrogénio não era considerado um elemento crucial nas refinarias, sendo por isso queimado juntamente com o fuel gás. Actualmente, o hidrogénio é considerado uma utilidade do processo e como tal deverá ser utilizado de forma eficiente. A procura crescente está também relacionada com as limitações ambientais exigidas bem como as especificações que os combustíveis devem apresentar, nomeadamente o teor de enxofre. Assim, torna-se necessário um melhor aproveitamento do hidrogénio presente na refinaria e como tal procede-se à gestão da rede de produção/distribuição/consumo do mesmo, dado ser um subproduto dos processos de refinação. Com tudo isto, a integração de processos tem sido a base de inúmeras metodologias sistemáticas que permitem identificar o ponto onde se poderá intervir. A gestão da rede de hidrogénio é baseada na metodologia pinch, que apresenta um procedimento que permite estabelecer a meta mínima de importação de hidrogénio à rede assim como localizar a corrente onde se pode aproveita-lo, e com isso reduzir os custos associados e obter novas especificações dos combustíveis. Esta dissertação de mestrado, teve como objectivo minimizar o hidrogénio presente no fuel gás da Refinaria de Matosinhos de forma a ser aproveitado na UN3700, unidade de hidrodessulfuração do gasóleo. Foi desenvolvida com base no trabalho proposto por Alves (1999), pois as correntes são consideradas em termos de qualidade (pureza em H2) e quantidade (caudal). Devido à existência de duas situações distintas nos resultados obtidos, concluise que para a situação em que se considera a corrente de reciclo, consegue-se obter uma percentagem de 55,21% de hidrogénio no fuel gás. Para a situação sem a corrente de reciclo é possível obter uma percentagem de 49,90%. Em ambas as situações será benéfico a ligação da UN1500 à UN1700 bem como do acumulador D- 4701 à UN1700.

Until recently hydrogen was not considered a crucial element in refineries and consequently it was burned along with the fuel gas. More recently Hydrogen has been become a useful element of the process and as such should be dealt with more efficiently. The growing demands are equally associated with restricted environmental limitations as well as fuel specifications, in particular the percentage of sulfur. It has thus become necessary to optimize the use of hydrogen existent in refinery. Consequently the whole production, distribution and consumption network requires adequate management and the approach to hydrogen as a byproduct of the refinement processes. This integration process has been the basis of countless systematic methodologies allowing accurate identification of intervention needs. The management of the hydrogen network is based on the pinch methodology and the procedure enabling management to establish the minimum goal of hydrogen import to the network as well as locate the current where it can be obtained allowing for significant associated cost reductions and obtaining new specifications of fuels. Para a pesquisa de campo foi feito um questionário do tipo survey abordando os conceitos de BPM, SOA e da integração entre eles. O questionário foi respondido exclusivamente por profissionais de TI e procurava explicar as seguintes perguntas: Os profissionais de TI conhecem e/ou utilizam o Business Process Management e o Service Oriented Architecture? Eles conhecem a relação de integração entre os conceitos? Esta é uma solução viável atualmente para integração de processos de negócios com a Tecnologia da informação? Até que ponto as empresas e seus profissionais estão prontos para utilizá-las? Os principais resultados mostram que segundo a percepção dos profissionais de TI, o conceito está bem sedimentado entre os profissionais de acordo com o tempo de experiência deles no mercado. Também ficou claro que ainda não se possui maturidade conceitual suficiente para o pleno uso das ferramentas e os softwares ainda não apóiam de forma integral as soluções para SOA e nem para BPM.

This work intends to analyze if the information technology is a tool that supports the management of process on business, by analyzing itself integration through the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), enabling the Business Process Management (BPM). For a field research was done a survey Questionnaire addressing the BPM and SOA concepts and the integration between them. The survey was responded exclusively by IT professionals and was looking to explain the follow questions:The IT professionals know and/or uses the Business Process Management and the Service Oriented Architecture? They know the integration relation between the two concepts? This is an available solution nowadays for integrating the business process with the information technology? Until where the enterprises and their professionals are ready to use then? The main results show that by the IT professionals perception, the concept is very consolidated between the professionals accordingly with their experience time on the market. Also was cleared that they still dont have enough conceptual maturity for the plenty use of the tools and the softwares still not support in a completely way the solutions neither for SOA nor for BPM.

A importância dos sistemas de software segue crescendo para grande parte das organizações. A expansão das funcionalidades viabilizadas com a implantação destes sistemas em produtos manufaturados e a emergência das \"mídias digitais\", que compreendem conteúdo digital, software e múltiplos canais de acesso ao mercado, são exemplos recentes nos quais os sistemas de software assumiram posição central para a estratégia corporativa. Grande parte das pesquisas realizadas sobre software não considera explicitamente os vínculos existentes entre o mercado no qual estas empresas atuam e seus processos organizacionais; como conseqüência, tanto pesquisa como prática em engenharia de software tendem a ser realizadas de forma neutra, e na perspectiva de um desenvolvedor de software, diferentes atividades de desenvolvimento são consideradas como igualmente relevantes para a obtenção dos objetivos corporativos. Este projeto de pesquisa analisa como acontece o alinhamento entre objetivos estratégicos e o processo de desenvolvimento em empresas de software e propõe um método para garantir que o processo de desenvolvimento encontra-se alinhado com os objetivos do negócio. O método inclui a categorização de diferentes companhias de software de acordo com as suas habilidades principais e a customização da técnica Technology Roadmapping para empresas de software. O percurso metodológico desenvolvido para atingir os objetivos propostos não é convencional e envolve diferentes etapas nas quais a recuperação de teorias, de conceitos e de modelos foi mesclada com atividades de pesquisa para o detalhamento, teste e ratificação dos diversos elementos que vêm a constituir o produto acima mencionado. Software importance is growing fast and consistently for many organizations. The growth of software functionality in manufactured products and the emergence of the digital media, convergent spaces comprehending digital content, software, and multi-channels to the market, are recent examples of organizational changes where software assumed a central position for the corporate strategy. O conceito de logística vem, ao longo do tempo, agregando novos elementos e tornando-se mais complexo. Nos anos 50 restringia-se à distribuição física. Atualmente engloba a totalidade dos fluxos de material, produtos e informação entre diferentes empresas da cadeia de suprimentos. Neste contexto, organizações dos mais variados segmentos vêm terceirizando suas operações logísticas para empresas especializadas denominadas operadores logísticos. As tecnologias de informação (TI) têm um importante papel no desenvolvimento das atividades logísticas e no desempenho dos operadores: suas aplicações permitem a otimização do sistema logístico e o gerenciamento de forma integrada de seus diversos componentes. O objetivo da pesquisa é investigar como a TI vem sendo utilizada pelos operadores nos processos logísticos e como vem contribuindo para o estabelecimento de redes de valor. A metodologia utilizada foi o estudo de casos múltiplos. Foram investigados cinco operadores logísticos com atuação no mercado brasileiro, com diferentes posicionamentos estratégicos, operando em diferentes setores e de modo a cobrir de forma integral o processo logístico. Os resultados da pesquisa indicaram a necessidade do desenvolvimento de aplicativos customizados, capazes de atender as particularidades de cada operador e de gerar vantagens competitivas, e apontaram a importância do papel da TI para o estabelecimento das redes de valor.

The logistics concept has been changing, adding new elements and becoming more complex. In the fifties it was restricted to physical distribution only. Nowadays, it embraces the total flow of materials, products and information between the different companies of a supply chain. In this new scenario, organizations in all industries have outsourced their logistics operations to specialized companies called logistics operators. Information technologies (IT) have an important role in the development of logistics activities and in the logistics operator\'s performance: IT applications allow an optimal tuning of the logistics system and an integrated management of its several components. The purpose of this research is to investigate how the logistics operators are applying IT in the logistics process and how IT is contributing to the establishment of value networks. The methodology utilized was the multiple cases study. Five logistic operators that feature different strategic positions and operate with different industries in the Brazilian market were investigated. The sample was chosen so as to provide the information needed for an analysis of all stages of the logistic process. The results of the research indicate that customized applications, suited to the particularities of each operator, play an important role in the creation of competitive advantages, and suggest the centrality of IT in the creation of value networks.

▼ Pervasive computing systems, envisioned as systems that blend with the physical environment to enhance the quality of life of its users, are rapidly becoming a not so distant reality. However, many challenges must be addressed before realizing the goal of having such computing systems as part of our everyday life. One such challenge is related to the problem of how to develop in a systematic way the software that lies behind pervasive systems, operating them and allowing them to intelligently adapt both to users' changing needs and to variations in the environment. In spite of the important strides done in recent years concerning the engineering of software that places the actual, immediate needs and preferences of users in the center of attention, to the best of our knowledge no work has been devoted to the study of the engineering process for building software for pervasive systems. In this dissertation we focus on the engineering process to build smart software services for pervasive systems. Specifically, we first introduce as our first major contribution a model for the systematic construction of software for pervasive systems, which has been derived using analytical, evidence-based, and empirical methodologies. Then, on the basis of the proposed model, we investigate two essential mechanisms that provide support for the engineering of value-added software services for smart environments, namely the learning of users' daily routines and the continuous identification of users. For the case of learning users' daily routines, we propose what is our second main contribution: a novel approach that discovers periodic-frequent routines in event data from sensors and smart devices deployed at home. For the continuous identification of users we propose what is our third major contribution: a novel approach based on behavioral biometrics which is able to recognize identities without requiring any specific gesture, action, or activity from the users. The two approaches proposed have been extensively evaluated through studies in the lab, based on synthetic data, and in the wild, showing that they can be effectively applied to different scenarios and environments. In sum, the engineering model proposed in this dissertation is expected to serve as a basis to further the research and development efforts in key aspects that are necessary to build value-added smart software services that bring pervasive systems closer to the way they have been envisioned. Furthermore, the approaches proposed for learning users' daily routines and recognizing users' identities in smart environments are aimed at contributing to the investigation and development of the data analytics technology necessary for the smart adaptation and evolution of the software in pervasive systems to users' needs. Pour les nœuds technologiques avancés, la consommation statique des circuits intégrés est devenue un facteur essentiel de l'industrie microélectronique. L'efficacité énergétique des circuits est mesurée en fonction de leur performance et en fonction de leur consommation statique. Face à l'augmentation de la variabilité des paramètres physiques et environnementaux, la technologie silicium sur isolant complètement désertée (FD-SOI : Fully-Depleted Silicon-On-Insulator) permet de prolonger la loi de Moore dans le domaine nanométrique. Dans ce mémoire une étude statistique de l'énergie des circuits intégrés CMOS-FDSOI est réalisée. Des bibliothèques statistiques qui caractérisent le délai et la puissance statique des transistors CMOS-FDSOI sont mises en place. Compte tenu des avantages liés à la technologie FDSOI, des approches statistiques basées sur les bibliothèques sont appliquées pour estimer le délai et la puissance statique. En conservant l'exactitude de l'estimation, ces approches apportent un gain important en temps CPU. Suite à l'estimation du délai et de la puissance statique, les variations énergétiques des transistors CMOS-FDSOI sont étudiées en fonction de la tension d'alimentation et en fonction de la tension de polarisation. Ainsi, grâce à la détermination d'un compromis Délai-Puissance Statique efficace et l'élaboration d'un flow d'optimisation statistique, l'énergie statique d'un circuit a pu être optimisée.

For advanced technology nodes, static consumption of integrated circuits has become a key factor for the microelectronics industry. Circuit energy efficiency is measured in terms of performance and static consumption. With the increase of physical and environmental parameters, the Fully-Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator technology allows to extend Moore's law in the nanometer domain. In this work, a statistical study of CMOS-FDSOI integrated circuit energy is carried out. Statistical libraries characterizing delay and static power of CMOS-FDSOI transistors are presented. Given the advantages of the FDSOI technology, statistical approaches based on the libraries are applied in order to estimate delay and static power. While maintaining the accuracy of the estimations, these approaches provide a significant gain in CPU time. Following delay and static power estimation, CMOS-FDSOI transistors energy variations are considered according to supply voltage and voltage body biasing. Thus, by determining an efficient Delay-Static Power compromise and the development of a statistical optimization flow, static energy of a circuit has been optimized.

▼ In 2001 the FDA launched the Process Analytical Technology initiative as a response to the growing public and industrial awareness that there is a lack of process understanding required to have an optimal control of pharmaceutical manufacturing. The current research project was initiated based upon the insight that critical process and product attributes can only be acknowledged upon a thorough process understanding. This thesis can be seen as a follow up on earlier research done on wet high shear granulation; key process parameters that are involved in the wet high shear granulation process, including granule breakage and growth were determined. Although the relevance of these critical process parameters towards the formation of inhomogeneous granules was reported extensively, the consequences of the described in-homogeneity phenomena in granules in further processing were not elaborated. After the wet granulation process, a drying step is always necessary to obtain a basis for the final drug product. After the wet granulation process, a drying step is always necessary to obtain a basis for the final drug product but the drying of wet granules often involves an unwanted and uncontrolled size reduction. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the behavior of the granules throughout the drying process and the consequences of granule heterogeneity during and after the drying process. In this thesis it was shown that granular composition, size heterogeneity and water content are the critical process and product quality parameters during drying. Granule characterization revealed that the change in granule size of (partially) dried granules follows a three phase system characterized by a growth, plateau and breakage phase. The growth phase is based upon available surface water enabling layering growth and coalescence upon consolidation. Below a minimum liquid bridge volume the presence of very small amounts of water or the formation of solid bridges cannot prevent abundant size reduction. In the plateau phase above minimum water content, behavior of granules can be described with Rumpfs’ dynamic granule strength. More specific, in fluid bed drying the granular bed, the granule size, the inter-granular composition and water content are totally heterogeneous throughout the drying process. This heterogeneity differentiates the drying rate and extent of size increase and reduction of the different granule size classes in relation to the dynamic granule strength. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) is shown to be a versatile method to further determine the critical process and product factors by in-line monitoring of water content of granule and monitoring of granule size and attrition effects. By NIR it was shown that different drying parameters led to significantly different compositions of granules (non-crystalline and crystalline lactose) with a direct influence on the functionality of the granules such as compactibility. O produto é a representação final das capacidades e competências de uma empresa na tentativa de converter ideias, conceitos e percepções em algo concreto. Desenvolver produtos, portanto, constitui-se em uma tarefa complexa e decisiva para as empresas e requer definição de objetivos estratégicos e uso intensivo de tecnologias principalmente da tecnologia de informação. Esta tese tem por objetivo analisar as relações dos elementos de alinhamento estratégico nas diversas fases do processo de desenvolvimento de produto. Para tanto, foi utilizada a metodologia de estudo de caso múltiplo em três empresas do setor industrial situadas no sul do país. A coleta de dados baseou-se em um protocolo de pesquisa constituindo um roteiro de entrevistas semiestruturadas onde foram elencados todos os elementos pertinentes as duas dimensões pesquisadas e em análise de documentos. A validação do protocolo ocorreu através de uma aplicação piloto com especialistas da área de desenvolvimento de produto, de estratégia de negócio e de tecnologia da informação. A partir dos dados coletados foi iniciada a análise das relações entre os elementos de Alinhamento Estratégico entre negócio e tecnologia da informação com as fases do processo crítico de negócio Desenvolvimento de Produto. As relações entre os elementos de cada dimensão (Alinhamento Estratégico e Processo de Desenvolvimento de Produto) foram codificadas com a ajuda do software QSR NVivo 7®. Os resultados encontrados permitiram identificar a existência e as intensidades variadas de relacionamento entre os elementos de alinhamento estratégico e desenvolvimento de produto. As principais fases do PDP resultantes da observação foram: Pré-desenvolvimento, Desenvolvimento e Pós-desenvolvimento. Os principais elementos de AE encontrados às fases do PDP foram: Habilidades e Competências. Também, foi possível observar que as relações são dependentes da escolha estratégica da empresa de ser líder ou seguidora; e, perceber que o caráter estratégico ou operacional do processo de desenvolvimento de produto é direcionado pelos elementos de alinhamento tais como elementos de tecnologia da informação. A variação da intensidade das relações entre os elementos de alinhamento com as fases do processo de desenvolvimento de produto, indica que ocorrem alinhamentos e também desalinhamentos no processo de desenvolvimento de produto para as empresas estudadas.

▼ Desde a criação da tecnologia e do seu uso pelas empresas, a relação custo e benefício nem sempre foi bem elucidada tanto para os responsáveis pela área de tecnologia quanto para a alta direção. Mas, apesar disto, cada vez mais as organizações investem maciçamente em tecnologia, esperando que esta seja a solução para diversos problemas. Por isto, esta questão tem se tornado crucial para o processo de tomada de decisões, visto que investimentos nesta área costumam ser dispendiosos e, na atual conjuntura, estas análises precisam ser extremamente criteriosas para que se miniminizem as possibilidades de insucesso dos projetos, principalmente numa economia estabilizada e de concorrência acirrada. Uma das alternativas que as empresas têm buscado para atingir o sucesso e correr menos riscos é a terceirização da área de TI. Partindo desta visão, a presente dissertação tem por objetivo realizar uma investigação sobre a terceirização dos serviços de TI em todos os seus aspectos, isto é, desde a sua motivação, serviços efetivamente terceirizados, vantagens, desvantagens e possíveis obstáculos, a visão do alinhamento estratégico da TI, os processos de gestão de contratos e formas de controle e, por fim, tendências futuras. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de múltiplos casos, envolvendo franquias do Sistema Coca-Cola no Brasil. O estudo apresenta uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre o processo de tomada de decisão empresarial, a análise de investimentos, a gestão e a terceirização da TI, o que permitem definir as dimensões de análise da pesquisa. Na pesquisa de campo foram entrevistados os gerentes da área de TI, nas cidades de Brasília-DF, Goiânia-GO e Ribeirão Preto-SP. A pesquisa de campo permitiu identificar como as mesmas avaliam seus investimentos em TI, como esta área é gerenciada, o que as levou a optar pela terceirização e como os processos terceirizados afetam a organização. Por se tratar de uma pesquisa qualitativa, optou-se por analisar comparativamente as três organizações. Com a realização deste estudo, obtiveram-se, como principais resultados, que as organizações estão utilizando a terceirização em TI para focar no negócio principal e, mesmo encontrando diversas desvantagens, inclusive com relação a custos, acreditam que os benefícios justificam. Ainda identificaram-se alguns obstáculos internos para a terceirização, principalmente quanto ao receio de se perder a inteligência do negócio. ▼ O branqueamento ECF com as tecnologias atuais, à base de dióxido de cloro representa o segundo maior custo de produção de polpa kraft branqueada de eucalipto (US 25-30/t), sendo a madeira o primeiro (US 40-80/t). Por outro lado, a oferta de reagentes de branqueamento, tipicamente dióxido de cloro, tem sido fator limitante para o aumento da produção de muitas unidades industriais antigas, já que a capacidade de unidades geradoras desse reagente só pode ser aumentada pela sua completa substituição. Além disso, o efluente do branqueamento com dióxido de cloro é de difícil recirculação no sistema de recuperação química da fábrica. Tecnologias alternativas de branqueamento de polpa que minimizem o uso de dióxido de cloro são, portanto, muito bem-vindas. O foco das investigações em busca de reagentes alternativos tem sido na fase de pré-branqueamento da polpa, i.e., nos dois primeiros estágios da seqüência de branqueamento, visando a utilizar menos dióxido de cloro e baixar o número kappa da polpa que segue para a fase de alvejamento. A experiência prática industrial no Brasil demonstra que o número kappa da polpa, após cozimento da madeira e deslignificação com oxigênio, varia de 9 a 11. O branqueamento subseqüente da polpa com esse nível de número kappa requer de 36 a 44kg de cloro ativo por tonelada de polpa, ou seja, cerca de 4kg de cloro ativo por unidade de número kappa. Portanto, o principal objetivo deste estudo foi investigar alternativas que permitissem não só reduzir o consumo específico de dióxido de cloro, mas, principalmente, reduzir o número kappa da polpa que segue para a fase de alvejamento Tais alternativas incluíram: (1) aumento da eficiência de deslignificação com oxigênio pelo uso de aditivos e otimização de variáveis operacionais; (2) substituição do estágio ácido e/ou primeiro estágio de dioxidação por um estágio de peróxido ácido catalisado com sais de molibdênio (PMo) ou outros sais; (3) avaliação industrial do estágio PMo numa seqüência PMoZDP; e (4) substituição do NaOH por Mg(OH)2 nos estágios P e Ep das seqüências de branqueamento AZDP, a/(Ze)DP e D*(Ep)D. O cumprimento desses objetivos resultou nos quatro capítulos deste trabalho. Foi concluído que o uso do MgSO4 na deslignificação com oxigênio associados à aplicação de condições mais severas de álcali (25kg/t) e temperatura (115C) permitem reduzir o número kappa da polpa para valores abaixo de 9,0, diminuindo o custo do branqueamento pela seqüência Oa/(Ze)DP, sem prejuízo para a qualidade da polpa. A substituição do estágio ácido da seqüência AZDP, pelo estágio de peroxiacético (produzido a partir do pentacetato de glicose), também reduziu o kappa de entrada do alvejamento. A utilização do estágio de peróxido ácido catalisado com molibdênio (PMo) em substituição ao estágio ácido (A) reduziu o kappa de entrada do alvejamento substancialmente, tendo reduzido também o custo total do branqueamento pela seqüência AZDP em R2,13/t de polpa. Currently, due to some irrational allocation of medical and healthcare resources, a considerable proportion of state-of-the-art medical equipment and talented medical personnel are concentrated in large urban hospitals. This situation is particularly common in 3A hospitals (3A hospitals are hospitals which are equipped with more than 501 beds, can provide medical and healthcare services with high-level specialty to various regions and with scores higher than 900 according to the grading standard), which are often crowded with patients. According to the normal outpatient process, patients need to undergo a prolonged procedure from registration, treatment, laboratory test, diagnosis to drug dispensing. Often patients have to spend a long time waiting for treatment, receiving tests and paying for medical care. The congestion of patients at certain time-consuming processes allows doctors little time to check and treat patients thoroughly. As a result, doctors are often unable to make accurate and comprehensive diagnosis. Considered the window of a hospital, outpatient service is extremely important. Whether the design of its process is reasonable and whether its management is able to maximize interests for patients will directly affect the hospital’s medical level, and even its social benefits and reputation. Therefore, it has become a major issue for a hospital achieves to optimize the business process of its outpatient service. Outpatient process, as a core business process of a hospital, is critical to improving the quality of its medical service, upgrading its performance and minimizing its operating costs. Therefore, re-designing the outpatient process of a hospital can help enhance its comprehensive strength by endowing it with a core competence. In addition, the hospital will be impelled to provide patients with more convenient medical services with higher quality and lower price. This work conducts a case study on The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH), which was the first to implement an outpatient appointment registration system. This thesis gives an anatomy of the outpatient process of the hospital through various methods and theories, such as literature review, field research, expert consultation, Business Process Reengineering Theory and Information technology, aiming to identify objectives and strategies of the case hospital in improving its outpatient process. The study consists of: - An investigation into the current situation of HKU-SZH’s outpatient registration process: through questionnaires and structured interviews, the defects and weak links in the hospital’s appointment registration model were analyzed.
