Using remote sensing, geomatics and field surveys, we confirmed the existence of Sahelian regreening during the period 1981 to 2006, even though it is far from homogeneous. These spatial differences can not be explained solely by natural factors. Population growth alone does not explain these differences across the Sahel. The multiscale approach to changes in plant cover over more than 50 years, in the six workshops belonging to three different countries, shows that the increasing presence of man does not systematically cause the disappearance of trees. The observed agricultural expansion seems to have led to the "displacement" of trees from the savannah to the cultivated areas and villages, the rural Sahelian societies shaping tree cover according to their needs (agriculture, clearing, cutting, energy wood). The analysis of the speeches of the people we met showed that the involvement of local "facilitators" is essential to the success of replanting projects and safeguarding the forest heritage of each village. The use of geo-textometric analyzes of the discourse made it possible to highlight the opposition "Users-Managers" but also the differences between sites along the north-south bioclimatic gradient. Nevertheless, future generations have a representation of their environment that could go hand in hand with a concern for its preservation

▼ Water is one of the vital elements all over the world and due to several factors such as over
exploitation, water resources are steadily decreasing. This study is therefore aimed at
characterizing the nature of the shallow subsurface infiltration area by applying Electrical
Resistivity Tomography and Magnetic methods to understand the conduits and channels through
which ground water reaches the aquifer. The objective of this study is to determine structural set
up of the Delamere-Enderit area and help in interpreting their complexity in controlling ground
water flow. The subsurface geoelectric survey is conducted using Electrical Resistivity
Tomography (ERT) in two dimension. Inversion technique is employed in the processing of
ERT data. In addition magnetic methods are also employed to identify anomalous zones that
include faults and fissures. Using Euler Deconvolution Software, a magnetic map and magnetic
profiles are obtained to highlight this. Water bearing rocks are mainly the volcanic sands which
host the main aquifer and volcanoclastic sediments that host perched aquifers which are
responsible for lateral flow of water. Fracturing is evident in the area from both electrical and
magnetic studies. The ERT and magnetic geophysical methods above mentioned are elaborated
in this report.

Our intent is to clarify our intuition on a more important research : integrating body-mind techniques, especially concerning the qigong 氣功or “work of breath”, in medical research thus opening important psychopathologic paths. The author, who has a double background, in both psychoanalysis and Qigong, sustains that the return to perception, backed up by the development of attentive gests and respiration, upgrades the driving force and is potentially responsible of having a positive effect on the compulsive processes. The scientific stake inscribed in the first program of clinical research dedicated to Qigong supported by the Minister in charge of Health matters, would be to contribute to the actualisation of modes of action on the processes of unbinding and fixation by boosting the life drive. The author has extracted the concepts of Drive and Qi, fundamental concepts in both fields (Partial and II). This method has allowed us to clarify the respective occurrences in both worlds from a common point – energy. The first four chapters establish the basis of the understanding of these concepts and notions necessary to understand the articulation of…

This work focuses on the relationship between the Baniwa and Koripako people of the NorthWestern Amazon (Brazil) and non-human beings, more specifically the animals and plants they convert into food. To understand these relationships, our approach takes into account mythical explanations of the origins of these beings, descriptions of subsistence techniques (fishing, hunting, horticulture and gathering) and culinary and food practices in different contexts (domestic, community and inter-community). We observe, on one hand, predation between men and animals and, on the other hand, care and protection between women and cultivated plants – with tame animals and wild plants occupying an intermediate position. This contrast, manifested in many dietary or behavioural precautions and restrictions, is explained by the types of relationships established between humans and the owners of animals and plants who control the feeding and reproduction of their subordinates. The opposition between predation and care – the latter expressed in particular through gifts and sharing of food – is also reproduced in the field of human relations: predation being characteristic of relations with foreign groups and gift with the consanguineous and members of the local group.

▼ In this thesis, use of multivariate statistical methods for predicting soil properties from infrared spectroscopy data is addressed. Different methods for analyzing complex data and analysis tools to address the computational complexity, when dealing with soil spectroscopy data were developed.
Infrared spectroscopy is providing soil scientists with a new tool for assessing soil quality rapidly and cheaply. This is opening up new possibilities for monitoring soil quality or fertility in landscapes. However, spectroscopy techniques generate high dimensional datasets that are complex data to process, analyze and interpret. Therefore, for the generated data to be translated into a form where soil can be classified as from a fertile or poor area requires knowledge and correct use of multivariate statistical techniques. In addition, novel approaches in developing predictive models using mixed effects linear regression, partial least square regression (PLS) and random forest regression methods are used and tested.
The study used mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy data for soil samples collected from western Kenya. Exploratory data analysis methods were used to assess the distribution of different soil properties, analyzed on 10% of the samples that had reference data. Principal component analysis (PCA) scores plots computed from the spectra were used to screen for any extreme spectral outliers. The dataset was split into two: (i) a training set consisting of two-thirds of the soil samples with both MIR data and soil properties reference data acquired using conventional methods and (ii) a testing set which was used to assess the predictive power of the fitted models. The models’ predictive performances were evaluated using bias and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) parameters. Further, residual regression kriging was used to investigate spatial dependence of the model residuals.
The methods were tested further on a bigger dataset of samples collected from 60 different sites across Africa. Due to the large number of samples in this dataset, pattern recognition methods were to search for local subspaces. The cosine of angles between pairs of spectra, hit quality index, archetype analysis and self-organizing maps were computed to determine and group similar spectra together. Computer codes for these methods were done using R statistical software.
xv
A major achievement for this work was the adaptation and development of tools and methods fully customized for data of this type. For instance, the function to directly read raw spectral measurements from instruments reduced processing steps and time required. Improved prediction for aluminum, copper and boron from the hybrid method of PLS and regression kriging of residuals showed that accounting for their spatial dependence can minimize model residuals. Another achievement is the successful partitioning of spectral datasets into groups, which upon evaluation, revealed innate fertility levels. This is particularly useful because it can be used to rapidly assess soil…

▼ Reverse engineering is the process of discovering a model of a software system by analyzing its structure and functions. Reverse engineering
techniques applied to interactive software applications (e.g. applications with user interfaces (UIs)) are very important and significant, as they can help engineers to detect defects in the software and then improve or complete them. There are several approaches, and many different tools, which are able to reverse-engineer software applications into formal models. These can be classified into two main types: dynamic tools and static tools. Dynamic tools interact with the application to find out the run-time behaviours of the software, simulating the actions of a user to explore the system’s state space, whereas static tools focus on static structure and architecture by analysing the code and documents. Reverse engineering
techniques are not common for interactive software systems, but nowadays more and more organizations recognize the importance of interactive systems, as the trend in software used in computers is for applications with graphical user interfaces. This has in turn led to a developing interest in reverse engineering tools for such systems.
Many reverse engineering tools generate very big models which make analysis slow and resource intensive. The reason for this is the large amount of information that is generated by the existing reverse engineering
techniques. Slicing is one possible technique which helps with reducing un-necessary information for building models of software systems. This project focuses on static analysis and slicing, and considers how they can aid reverse engineering
techniques for interactive systems, particularly with respect to the generation of a particular set of models, Presentation Models (PModels) and Presentation Interaction Models (PIMs).

Riders of Powered two-wheeled vehicles (P2WV) are among the most vulnerable drivers on roads. In France, riders of P2WVs are just 1.9% of road traffic, but account for 24% of road user deaths. This high rate of mortality may be explained by several factors. One of them is the lack of specific Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). In fact, because of the complexity of the P2WVs dynamics and the unavailability of some states (such as the steering torque, the roll angle and the lateral forces), it is more difficult to design specific ITS systems for P2WVs. In this context, my thesis aims the estimation of relevant dynamics of P2WVs. Firstly, a Takagi-Sugeno…

Traditional forms of anti-virus like signature recognition are lacking in that
they can only fight against viruses after they have created a significant enough impact
to be identified as malicious. Recently researchers have been applying modern machine
learning
techniques to the task of detecting malicious programs before they even have a
chance to cause any damage. This paper investigates a selection of these
techniques in a
controlled environment on the Microsoft Windows platform. The selected
techniques
are tested on the same set of malicious code and the resulting performance and effectiveness
of each is analyzed and discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of
potential directions the research could be taken in the future.

▼ This thesis presents work done to extend and improve the operation of homodyne dechirp-on-receive linearly frequency modulated radars.
First, an investigation of the effect of common phase errors on the point response function of the radar is described. The dependence on the window function of the degradation due to phase errors is investigated, and a simple, precise, and general approach for calculating the degraded Point Spread Function (PSF) is described and demonstrated. This method is shown to be particularly useful when investigating the effect of chirp nonlinearity on the PSF.
Next, a method for focussing range profiles that are degraded by chirp nonlinearity is described. This method is based on two established methods, the Phase Gradient Algorithm (PGA) and a time-domain re-sampling technique. The technique is entirely hardware independent, allowing any homodyne dechirp-on-receive linearly frequency modulated radar to be focussed. Where suitable archive signal data exists, focussed imagery can even be produced from radars that no longer exist. The complete algorithm and details of the implementation are described, and the technique is demonstrated on three representative radar cases: extreme chirp nonlinearity, typical chirp nonlinearity, and a retrospective case. In all of the cases, it was shown that the PSF was dramatically improved.
A technique based on down conversion by aliasing for reducing the required sampling rate is described, and a simple technique for calculating suitable sampling rates is presented. This method is demonstrated for a typical application in which sampling rate reduction might be required, namely Moving Target Indication (MTI). The MTI application is described and quantified, including a simple technique for choosing suitable radar operation parameters. The MTI technique with subsampling was demonstrated in software simulations and in a simple radar experiment.
A Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) test bench for researching component performance and scatterer properties in the context of SAR was developed. An appropriate image formation processing algorithm was found and modified to better suit the task of a short data collection baseline and drifting centre frequencies, both of which are present in the test bench situation. Software was written to collect data, to control the hardware, and to process the signals into SAR images. A data simulator was written to test the image formation algorithm implementation; it also served as a useful tool for investigating the effect of signal errors on the quality of the resultant SAR imagery. A suitable oscillator was chosen for the task, based on phase noise and centre frequency stability considerations, both of which are quantified and discussed. Preliminary SAR imagery was produced, indicating that the system operates correctly and in agreement with comparable systems.

▼ Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) is
prevalent in the Canadian Forces. Physiotherapists use behavioural
change
techniques (BCT) to challenge maladaptive cognitions and
behaviours in the treatment of CNSLBP. The aim of this study was to
determine the range and type of BCT used in the “Back to Fitness”
class at CFB Halifax. A nomenclature integrating a psychology BCT
checklist and relevant physiotherapy literature was used to create
a physiotherapist BCT checklist tool that was piloted in a field
study. A wide range (n=24) and type (cognitive, behavioural and
motivational) of BCT were identified in three settings (lecture,
two exercise sessions). The nomenclature produced in this first
examination of BCT in physiotherapy practice, will be useful for
future research and training. This project revealed an overlap
between psychology and physiotherapy that could lead to improved
interprofessional communication and earlier access to behaviour
change interventions for patients with CNSLBP.

▼ Recent research has clearly
established that holding-time-aware routing and wavelength
assignment (RWA) schemes lead to significant improvements in
resource utilization for scheduled traffic. By exploiting the
knowledge of the demand holding times, this thesis proposes new
traffic grooming
techniques to achieve more efficient resource
utilization with the goal of minimizing resources such as
bandwidth, wavelength channels, transceivers, and energy
consumption. This thesis also introduces a new model, the segmented
sliding window model, where a demand may be decomposed into two or
more components and each component can be sent separately. This
technique is suitable for applications where continuous data
transmission is not strictly required such as large file transfers
for grid computing. Integer linear program (ILP) formulations and
an efficient heuristic are put forward for resource allocation
under the proposed segmented sliding window model. It is shown that
the proposed model can lead to significantly higher throughput,
even over existing holding-time-aware
models.

▼ 1. The effects of splenectomy on the cellular elements of the circulating blood in the male albino rat have been investigated. Only a quantitative change in the leukocytes was observed. This change was in the form of a marked leukocytosis. The leukocytosis reached a peak 8 to 10 days after splenectomy and was maintained for a period of several months at a significantly higher liver than that which was observed to follow other comparable operative procedures. 2. Subcutaneous injection of acetone desiccated splenic powder caused a leukopenic reaction in 17 hours in splenectomized rats, but the leukopenia was found not to be related specifically to the spleen. 3. Subcutaneous injection of insoluble tissue powders caused inflammation at the site of injection. A saline extract of the excised inflammatory tissue produced a profound leukopenia in 4 hours following subcutaneous injection. The leukopenia lasted 4 to 6 hours and was due to a reduction in both polymorph nuclear and mononuclear cells. 4. The leukopenia-producing substance in the saline extract of inflammatory tissue was called the leukopenia-depressing factor or L.D.F. 5. The L.D.F. was found to be heat stable, not coagulable by heat, non-dialyzable, and stable in saline at 5°C. for a period of several months. 6. Ultracentrifuge analysis of the lyophilized powder suggested that the soluble sedimenting components are of small molecular weight, presumably between 10,000 and 20,000. Electrophoretic analysis showed there to be at least five components. A positive Molisch test demonstrated the presence of carbohydrate material. Chemical analysis showed that it contained 0.13 per cent phosphorus and 13.26 per cent nitrogen. 7. The L.D.F. in the saline extract of inflammatory tissue is compared with five other similar leukopenia-producing substances reported in literature.

▼ Estrogens are potent endocrine disrupting compounds commonly found in municipal wastewater. While they can be removed in the activated sludge wastewater treatment process, the degree to which they are removed varies considerably among wastewater treatment plants, even of the same type. This study demonstrated that one possible reason for this variation is the differences in microbial ecology as well as solid retention time (SRT). Two laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), each performing simultaneous carbon oxidation and nitrification, were fed different organic carbon sources. The SBR receiving peptone, a complex organic carbon source, resulted in a more diverse overall bacterial community and ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) community than the SBR receiving glucose, a simple sugar. The peptone-fed SBR also had a greater proportion of AOB than the glucose-fed SBR. This increased proportion of AOB helps to explain the faster nitrification kinetics in the peptone-fed SBR than the glucose-fed SBR, although both reactors shared similar COD oxidation kinetics. Each SBR was also fed 17?-estradiol (E2), a natural estrogen, and 17?-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic estrogen. Although the removal of E2 and EE2 in the liquid phase was rapid and similar for both SBRs, the estrogens sorbed onto the solid phase indicated clear differences in the removal characteristics between the two SBRs. Specifically, the EE2 removal in the peptone-fed SBR was significantly more complete than the glucose-fed SBR. Therefore, the nitrifying kinetics heavily influenced the degradation characteristics of EE2, but not nearly as much for E2. However, heterotrophic activity can still be responsible for significant EE2 removal as well as E2 removal. After the SRT had been increased from 20 days to 40 days, the EE2 eventually decreased to approximately 40% of the previous amount in each SBR, and the E2 similarly decreased to 30%. These results suggest that increased SRT leads to more complete estrogen degradation.

▼ Elite beach volleyball can be played with specialized
positions (blockers and defenders) yet research addressing the
differences between these players is lacking. Moreover, research in
junior beach volleyball is very scarce. Therefore, the primary goal
of this study was to describe then compare playing techniques and
tactics between blockers and defenders (and universal athletes for
women only) at the 2011 Junior (U21) FIVB Beach Volleyball World
Championships to see whether differences existed between these
athletes. Multiple actions from each skill (serving, serve
reception, setting, attacking, blocking, defense) were recorded.
Results revealed significant differences between serving technique
(p<0.05) and quality (p<0.05) between blockers and
defenders for men, as well as blockers, defenders and universal
athletes for women (technique, p<0.001; quality,
p<0.05). Lastly, where possible, secondary comparisons were
made between junior men and women, as well as between junior and
senior athletes.

▼ Identifying material parameters in composite plates is a necessary first step in a variety of structural applications. For example, understanding the material parameters of carbon fiber composite is important in investigating sensor and actuator placement on micro-air-vehicle wings for control and wing morphing purposes. Knowing the material parameters can also help examine the health of composite structures and detect wear or defects. Traditional testing methods for finding material parameters such as stiffness and damping require multiple types of experiments such as tensile tests and shaker tests. These tests are not without complications. Methods such as tensile testing can be destructive to the test specimens while use of strain gages and accelerometers can be inappropriate due to the lightweight nature of the structures.
The proposed inverse problem testing methods using digital image correlation via high speed cameras can potentially eliminate the disadvantages of traditional methods as well as determine the required material parameters including stiffness and damping by conducting only one type of experiment. These material parameters include stiffness and damping for both isotropic and orthotropic materials, and ply angle layup specifically for carbon fiber materials. A finite element model based on the Kirchoff-Love thin plate theory is used to produce theoretical data for comparison with experimental data collected using digital image correlation. Shaker experiments are also carried out using digital image correlation to investigate the modal frequencies as validation of the results of the inverse problem.
We apply these
techniques first to an aluminum plate for which material parameters are known to test the performance and efficiency of the method. We then apply the method to a composite plates to determine not only these parameters, but also the layup angle. The inverse problem successfully estimates the Young's modulus and damping for the aluminum material. In addition, the vibration analysis produces consistent resonance frequencies for the first two modes for both theoretical and experimental data. However, carbon fiber plates present challenges due to limitations of the Kirchoff-Love plate theory used as the underlining theoretical model for the finite element approximation used in the inverse problem, resulting in a persistent mismatch of resonance frequencies in experimental data.

▼ Communication has visited various trends and stages
over the past few decades. Global system for mobile communication
(GSM) a second generation (2G) technology, which was introduced in
early 1990s , is running out of bandwidth. This has led to its
evolution into third generation (3G) networks with general packet
radio service (GPRS) and EDGE based networks as milestones.
Although cellular phones and pagers revolutionised communication,
the next few years promise the deployment of enhanced wireless
communication devices. These future technologies are targeted at
providing very high-rate communication anywhere and anytime.
Researchers now realise the need to develop a technology to handle
very high rate multimedia traffic, which will not only be able to
support the traffic, but also provide this service for a mobile
user moving at a high speed. This technology is certainly beyond 3G
and can be classified as a fourth generation (4G) technology. The
field of mobile radio communications aspires to support high data
rate applications such as image and video. However, the ability to
achieve high bit rates at low error rates over wireless channels is
severely restricted by the frequency selectivity of channels used
by multiple propagation paths with different time delays. With
conventional code division multiple access (CDMA), resistance to
fading is achieved by spreading the signal energy over a larger
bandwidth than necessary, to contain the user signal. However, in
the process of providing resistance to deep fades, the signal is
affected by delay spreads to a greater extent, and experiences
considerable inter chip interference (ICI). Recently, wide-band

▼ Diabetic related eye diseases are the most common
cause of blindness in the world. This thesis suggests methods for
the early detection of Diabetic Retinopathy during mass screening
in rural areas. Current methods used by the ophthalmologists are
manual examination of the eye and it has lesser accuracy. Density
analysis is less efficient which leads to think of the automated
analysis. The current methods were studied in consultation with the
ophthalmologists. The image processing techniques applied to the
retinal images automatically detect the presence of any
abnormalities during screening. These methods are easy to use and
helpful for the Physicians in the screening of Diabetic
retinopathy. The optic disk is the point in the eye where the optic
nerves enter the retina. Precise localization of optic disk
boundary is an important sub problem, which needs attention in
ophthalmic image processing. The Principal Component analysis (PCA)
was applied only to the clusters and the output of the PCA was
given as input for the propagation through radii method .This saves
time and gives good results with higher PSNR value. Exudates are
the primary signs of diabetic retinopathy which are the cause for
blindness. Exudates can be identified as areas with hard white or
yellowish color with varying sizes, shapes and locations. Automated
detection of optic disk, exudates, blood vessel extraction and also
optic disk and exudates detection through the extraction of blood
vessel were done using Matlab software. This thesis gives methods
for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy using computer and
paves the way for creating awareness during screening. The image
obtained from the fundus camera during screening was fed to the
computer and it shows whether the image is normal or affected by
diabetes. In future, using this approach the microaneurysm and
haemorrhages can also be detected by which many abnormalities in
the retinal image can be analyzed.

▼ Searching the Web has become more challenging due
to the rapid growth in information. The documents contain much
valuable knowledge about a particular domain. The ontology can be
used as main resource to understand the textual information
contained within the documents. The objective of the research is to
define a model for the annotation and retrieval using optimization
techniques. This research shows how to apply ontology based
annotation method to improve the retrieval. The quality of the
solution obtained can be improved by using annotated weights and
optimized clustering algorithm. Another objective is to extract
relevant concept from the corpus. The ontology population generates
the new instance and results in the semantic annotation of
document. The main goal of information extraction is to retrieve
the relevant information from the document and to create an
instance of ontology. The main goal of ontology-driven information
retrieval is to enhance search by making use of available semantic
annotations and their underlining ontologies. The objective of the
particle swarm optimization clustering algorithm is to discover the
proper centroids of clusters for minimizing the intra-cluster
distance as well as maximizing the distance between clusters. This
study investigates the application of fuzzy particle swarm
optimization in document clustering. The main objective is to apply
the fuzzy particle swarm optimization clustering method on the
semantically annotated documents. A fuzzy particle swarm
optimization combined with ontology model of clustering knowledge
documents is presented and compared to the traditional vector space
model. It also overcomes the problems existing in the vector space
model commonly used for clustering. The proposed ontology framework
provides improved performance and better clustering compared to the
traditional vector space model. The increase in F-measure is
achieved when ontology as the distance measure in fuzzy particle

▼ The production of good quality radiographs is a complex process, given the high level of image quality required (Sniureviciute & Adliene, 2005: 260). Exposure of patients to x-rays, a factor in the production of quality radiographs also entails a risk of radiation injury. In 2006, computerized radiography (CR) was introduced at The Nairobi Hospital to try and reduce the film reject rate, decrease repeats, reduce financial costs of consumables like x-ray films and processing chemicals. However, to date, no formal film reject analysis has been conducted at The Nairobi Hospital. Four years after the incorporation of CR, there is apparently, still a significant number of film rejects, implying operational costs may still be high. The cause of film rejects and overall reject cost is not known. This has led to the research question: “Has the film reject rate in the A & E x-ray unit at The Nairobi Hospital reduced following incorporation of CR?” A quantitative, retrospective, descriptive study involving a reject film analysis of rejected radiographs in the Accident and Emergency (A&E) x-ray unit in the Nairobi Hospital, Kenya was conducted. The researcher collected data for a period of 6 months between 2/12/07 and 28/05/08 using a purpose-designed data collection form. All rejected x-ray films during the study period were included. Capture and analysis of the collected data was completed by the researcher using SPSS 10 and EPINFO computer packages. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from The Nairobi Hospital Education Committee and due consideration to patient and radiographer confidentiality was maintained throughout the study. A total of 851(2.5 percent) x-ray films were collected during the study period. Four hundred and fourteen (2.6 percent) radiographs and 437 (2.5 percent) radiographs were rejected prior to and after the incorporation of CR respectively. Chest radiographs were the most frequently rejected accounting for 277(66.9 percent) and 123 (28.1 percent) prior to and after the incorporation of CR respectively. The most frequently rejected film size was 35x35cm prior to the incorporation of CR (61.6 percent) and 26x35cm film size after the incorporation of CR (91.3 percent). The most frequent cause of film rejects was radiographer causes both prior to and after the incorporation of CR accounting for 496 (58.3 percent). The film reject rate did not significantly reduce after the incorporation of CR, suggesting that there are other factors which contribute to reject rate, other than CR. The study also shows that higher film consumption does not necessarily lead to high reject rates. The percentage value on annual rejects did not change after the incorporation of CR and a demonstrated increase in the annual cost of purchasing x-ray films was attributed to an increase in annual consumption after the incorporation of CR, and also to the higher cost of digital x-ray films. Despite some identified limitations to this study, some recommendations, which included conduction of regular reject analyses and regular…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Augmented reality is a fairly young research field, still in an infancy stage
at Stellenbosch University. Since this is one of the first augmented reality
projects, one goal is to present a theoretical study of augmented reality. This
study is given in the literature study, along with a review of the available
development solutions.
While there are various tools available with which one can create markerbased
augmented reality applications, these tools are not meant for testing new
techniques and algorithms in an augmented or mixed reality. The remaining
goals of this project is to create a platform for the rapid design of augmented
reality applications, and to expand the capabilities of this platform beyond
marker-based augmented reality.
In this project we present the design and implementation of a pragmatic
mixed-reality framework capable of a wider variety of applications. A design
is shown where marker tracking can be used alongside other computer vision
techniques to design new applications. The framework utilises stereo cameras
to find the position of real world objects, and a 3D display to make the mixed
reality environment as immersive as possible.
Proof of concept test applications built with the framework are presented.
Colour based techniques are used to find a user’s hand and create a virtual
representation of it. This allows the user to interact with a virtual object in
an augmented reality scene by ‘touching’ it with her hand.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Toegevoegde realiteit is ’n jong navorsingsveld by Universiteit Stellenbosch.
realiteit, is ’n teoretiese studie van toegevoegde realiteit as ’n doel gestel.

▼ Medicinal chemistry and reaction development have influenced one another in the field of organic chemistry. The synthesis of therapeutic small molecules often requires the use of practical synthetic methodologies, while reaction development is frequently inspired by the demands of medicinal chemistry.
First the development of small molecule inhibitors of hypoxia inducible factors, which are heterodimeric transcription factors that have been implicated in a number of cancer environments, will be discussed. Two scaffolds have been designed and evaluated for their ability to selectively bind within the binding domain of the hypoxia inducible factor-2α isoform and inhibit heterodimerization, with the most potent agonist exhibiting a half maximal inhibitory concentration value of 23 nanomolar. Inspired by the stereospecific mode of action exhibited by the diaryl-tetrazolo-tetrahydropyrimidine-based scaffold of hypoxia inducible factor-2 antagonists, a potential co-catalyst system for the asymmetric synthesis of these derivatives has been identified, utilizing a synergistic combination of a cinchona alkaloid-based primary amine and acid catalysts. While the enantioselectivity of this reaction as it currently stands remains modest, these products can be isolated in up to 96:4 enantiomeric ratio through recrystallization efforts.
Secondly, the development of a series of general and efficient methods for the synthesis of functionalized olefin products from simple unsaturated systems will be described. Unfunctionalized olefins and dienes are ideal substrates for chemical synthesis due to their low cost and ease of availability. However they present a variety of challenges when attempting to selectively differentiate between sterically and electronically similar carbon-hydrogen bonds. The processes described herein exploit the ability of sulfurimide and sulfurdiimide reagents to undergo hetero-ene reactions with terminal and internal olefins as well as [4+2] couplings with dienes. These reactions result in reactive intermediates that are utilized in a host of chemical transformations, including [2,3]-rearrangements to generate allylic amines and alcohols, Grignard coupling to generate linear and branched alkylated products, and aminoarylation chemistry. Most notably, a regio- diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of multifunctional allylic sulfinimides from internal olefins is discussed.
