▼ Seawater samples around
Taiwan were collected for pH, DIC, TA and fCO2 analyses. Results showed that their distributions closely related to the distribution of different water types. The high DIC and low pH but lower fCO2 values were found in the Shelf Surface Water (SSW) in the northern part of the study area, while the low DIC and TA but higher fCO2 values were found in the Luzon Coastal Current (LCC) in the northern Luzon Strait. The LCC was weak source under the influence of high temperature. Coastal Water (CW) and SSW represented two major sink areas due to the enhanced biological production stimulated by the high nutrient input from coastal and subsurface waters, respectively. Results also showed that high pH and TA but lower fCO2 were found in Kuroshio Surface Water (KSW) and KSW + Luzon Coastal Current (KSW+LCC) in the region off eastern
Taiwan. The warm and saline KSW and KSW+LCC were weak sink owing to the elevated TA/DIC ratio, suggesting their CO2 uptake potential were influenced by biological production. The entire northern SCS represented a weak source under the influence of temperature. Finally, seawaters around
Taiwan collectively acted as a sink of atmospheric CO2 with a flux of -0.12±0.43 mmol m-2 day-1 during the study period.

▼ Based on the study of leadership in management science, the purpose of this study is to describe the leadership styles of hospital pharmacy directors in Taipei, Taiwan. The Leader Effectiveness and Adaptability Description (LEAD) instrument was used to characterize the leadership styles of these directors. According to the Situational Leadership Thoery, the dominant and supporting styles, the style range, and the style adaptability of each director can be described. Some background factors in each hospital were collected in order to study the relationship between leadership style and these factors. The results of this study were based on the responses from 15 participating hospital pharmacy directors and 42 participating pharmacists. The most frequent dominant style used by hospital pharmacy directors in the Taipei area was high task - high relationship. It shows in the results that the female directors tend to be more concerned about the relationship with their subordinates than are the male directors. It also shows that the directors who have a higher educational degree tend to use a leadership style more task-oriented and less people-oriented. For the directors who are concerned about the effectiveness of their department, this study might serve as an initiative for them to assess their management practice.

▼ The purposes of this descriptive exploratory study were to develop a community needs assessment tool for hospice home care in Taiwan and to evaluate the reliability and validity of the tool. The Community Needs Assessment Tool (CNAT), a 59-item self-report survey with a 7-point Likert scale format, was designed to measure the importance of needs and the likelihood of using home-based hospice services. Two hundred and twenty-one subjects were conveniently recruited to test the reliability and validity of the CNAT. The overall reliability of the CNAT was demonstrated by Cronbach's alpha = 0.95. The internal consistency of the subscales ranged from 0.76 to 0.87 which were very acceptable. Convergent validity was suggested through a positive strong relationship among all subscales (Pearson r of 0.315-0.622). Additionally, the CNAT was able to discriminate the difference between two different age groups. The CNAT is a valid instrument.

▼ This was a descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study using self-administered questionnaires. The main purposes of this study were to examine the nursing faculty's perceptions of nursing deans' and directors' leadership styles, and to understand how well the perceptions relate to faculty job satisfaction levels. The transformational leadership theory and a direct-effects model supported the research framework of this study. A random sampling technique was employed to collect data from 18 schools with nursing programs. A total of 400 questionnaires were mailed directly to the selected faculty members at the school address. A number of 286 questionnaires were returned, representing a 72.96% response rate. Findings indicated that Taiwanese nursing deans and directors tend to display transformational leadership more frequently than the transactional leadership and the laissez-faire in their workplace. In addition, Taiwanese nursing faculty members reported moderate levels of satisfaction in their jobs. Regardless of each school's organizational characteristics, nursing deans and directors performed transformational leadership more frequently than the transactional leadership and the laissez-faire. The contingent reward, passive management-by-exception, and individualized consideration leadership styles of nursing deans and directors were significant predictors of nursing faculty job satisfaction in Taiwan. This study helps pave a path for Taiwan's researchers to understand the importance of setting up a leadership training program for nursing leaders.

▼ It remains unclear if mature consumers (particularly baby boomers) in Eastern countries have similar physiological, social and psychological needs when it comes to fashion shopping and consumption. The objectives of this study are: (1) to provide in-depth information regarding the attitudes of female baby boomers in
Taiwan toward aging and clothing choice; (2) to understand how female baby boomers in
Taiwan behave in different contexts (work-related, social and leisure activities) of clothing usage and consumption; and (3) to identify the differences between the Taiwanese boomers and Western boomers by comparing the current findings to previous research conducted in Western societies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 female participants aged from 47 to 59 years old. Although participants were experiencing physiological, social and psychological change during the aging process, the majority of the participants expressed the willingness to stay healthy and active in their social life. It is also evident that clothing selection and consumption were closely associated with individual’s profession, social status and daily activities. The sample of this study was limited to specific segment (middle to upper-class) which may not represent the diverse baby boomer populations in
Taiwan. Nevertheless, this unique study should provide valuable information of aging population and clothing consumption in
Taiwan to fashion practitioners, marketers and academia.

▼ Arc-continent collisions are a fundamental plate
tectonic process that control continental growth, orogen
development and the distribution of natural hazards and natural
resources. This process actively occurs in Taiwan where the Luzon
Volcanic Arc collides obliquely with the passive margin of the
Eurasian Plate. An important characteristic of the arc-continent
collision in Taiwan is that oblique convergence has produced an
orogen that decreases in age from north to south. Investigation of
the temporal evolution of the Taiwan orogen is therefore made
possible through studies at different latitudes on the island. The
first long-period magnetotelluric (MT) measurements in Taiwan were
recorded at 82 locations on three profiles across south, central
and north Taiwan during 2006-2007. These MT data were collected as
a component of the TAIGER (Taiwan Integrated Geodynamics Research)
project and are analyzed and interpreted in this thesis. The TAIGER
project was initiated to: 1) collect multi-technique high
resolution geophysical data required to unambiguously distinguish
between end-member tectonic models proposed for central Taiwan, and
2) to investigate the orogen evolution by comparison of data
collected at latitudes ranging from south to north Taiwan. In this
thesis, the central Taiwan TAIGER MT data are shown to be
inconsistent with orogen-scale thin-skinned tectonic models and
instead support predictions of lithospheric-scale deformation (i.e.
thick-skinned tectonics) beneath the Central Ranges. Similarity
between resistivity models of central and southern Taiwan indicate
that thick-skinned tectonics is occurring in both locations, and is
therefore a persistent mode of deformation that operates as the
orogen develops. The resistivity model for northern Taiwan is shown
to be consistent with dewatering of the subducting Philippine slab,
and with deformation described by the subducting indenter tectonic
model. A global context for the Taiwan results is provided by
comparison to the South Island of New Zealand that shares many
similarities with the tectonic setting in Taiwan. MT resistivity
models support lithospheric deformation beneath the Southern Alps,
and the occurrence of fluid-based conductors in the Marlborough
region caused by dewatering of the Pacific slab.

▼ Although there are previous studies on transnational migrants, no studies have been done on transnational bioscience entrepreneurs (TBEs) from either China or
Taiwan. This dissertation is the result of grounded theory methodology and extensive on-theground fieldwork from April 2008 to May 2010 in
Taiwan to yield conclusions that are convincing and accurate. Following Mills (2000), Paper 1 situates the researcher and respondents' personal experiences in their social structures and traces the transformation of these social structures in their cultural, historical, and political contexts. In so doing, this paper attempts to understand the extent to which a social scientist's training and transnational identity impact his work as a collector and analyst of qualitative data. Paper 2 documents the arc of TBE's transnational migration from
Taiwan to America before circling back toward China. Through the crucible of immigration and the desire to succeed, TBEs developed their own global sensibility, which empowers them to discover, evaluate, and exploit opportunities beyond political borders. Their global sensibility defines what is transnational about TBEs. As a coda to their already highly distinguished careers, TBEs seized the opportunity to learn what their true capabilities are absent the institutional barriers that are present in America and to leverage their iii expertise in upgrading China and
Taiwan's global bioscience competitiveness. Paper 3 reveals how a group of individuals who are defined as extreme cases based on the surface metrics of professional achievement and personal net worth are, in fact, driven by motivations common to all people. TBEs are motivated by nostalgia for their country of origin, obligation to family members, and opportunities for self actualization. As human beings, TBEs want to return to their home, support their family, and reach their full potential both inside and outside the workplace. Their proclivity for entrepreneurship together with their nostalgia for their country of origin explains why, instead of choosing early retirement amid the material comforts of America, they opted to return to
Taiwan and continue working throughout the autumn of their careers. TBEs recognized an opportunity where self actualization and economic and scientific development converged. iv

▼ This thesis aims to identify the music of current Taiwanese films with regard to their strategies of ‘localisation’, of indicating or alluding to or playing with musical signifiers of place, time and group identity, in the contexts of Taiwanese history and culture. It may be of interest for those who want to understand Taiwanese cultural history from a perspective rarely taken in scholarship, and for those interested in film music studies, which have rarely touched upon Taiwan. This thesis looks at and listens to recent, mostly commercial films of the so- called post-TNC era, i.e. after the period of Taiwan New Cinema. After the success of Cape No. 7 (2008) in the domestic market, the Taiwanese film industry has gained more confidence in producing films that articulate lives and issues shared by people on the island – films that establish shumin space1 in film. Music shares that tendency and often adopts music with a local connection – T-pop (Taiwanese popular music)2, historical songs, and elements from different traditions such as indigenous music and pan-Chinese sounds. The different ways of dealing with (and often localising) global musics, such as western-style pop-rock or the typical ‘triplets rhythm’3 derived from Japan, will also be discussed. This study analyses how such musical choices can function in concert with and as a source of information or intensification of film scenes and images, in counterpoint to them or as a background, to understand how music can be used to place audiences into a range of relationships to what a film shows. This study also asks how music that stresses the local identity of Taiwanese films may nevertheless be able to survive in a global market.

▼ From the perspective of food, I describe the identity changes of the Taiwanese people from 1949 to 2013: in the Japanese colonial period, Taiwanese preferred Chinese food and showed their Chinese identity. After 1945, followed by accepting mainland food, mainlanders became an ethnic group of
Taiwan. From 1988, Taiwanese began to hybrid the food in
Taiwan and create its own Taiwanese cuisine. Local people that labeled themselves as Taiwanese instead of Chinese were guided by the government and other mediums. When it comes to the step of global promotion, it can be found from the food festivals and night markets that Taiwanese want to sell its food culture to the foreign tourists. Food, as uniqueness in Taiwanese minds, is chosen to identify what is Taiwanese and to be consumed by others.

▼ In this thesis, I investigated interjections in spoken
Taiwan Mandarin. I gathered data from a contemporary spontaneous conversation between two
Taiwan Mandarin speakers that I recorded in the Leiden University for Linguistics Phonetics Laboratory. I described these interjections by writing down their form as accurately as possible, and placed them into categories I designed based on their meaning. After that, I discussed existing literature about interjections and compared it with my own data. Since there is no standard definition of interjections, I formulated my own definition based on my data. Finally, I tested whether or not the presence of a running microphone has an influence on the use of interjections by speakers. I compared one part during which the speakers think the microphone is running with another part during which they think it is off. The interjections I found in these parts are very similar, suggesting that my data reflect a natural language conversation. This work aims to shed light on the use of interjections in
Taiwan Mandarin, and to contribute to a wider discussion of interjections.

▼ In recent years, the number of adopted children with special needs in the Netherlands has increased, while the total number of adopted children has declined. Because of this shift, adoption agency Meiling requested an exploratory study on the welfare of adopted children with special needs. In this study parents of adopted children from
Taiwan have been questioned by using a digital questionnaire.
The research question of this thesiswas: “Are there differences in the care of adopted children from
Taiwan with and without special ?” To answer this question, the Leiden classification of special needs was used to specify the special needs. This classification focuses on physical/medical impairments of children. This resulted in two groups: 131 adopted children with special needs and 179 children without special needs.
The results of this study showed that adopted children with special needs were more likely to show developmental delays than adopted children without special needs, both when they were placed for adoption and at the time of the study. Also, adopted children with special needs used more guidance and support from different agencies, such as physiotherapy, remedial teaching, speech therapy, and health care than adopted children without special needs. Adopted children with special needs attended special education more frequently and/or needed more additional adjustments in school than adopted children without special needs. Adoptive parents of children with special needs used health insurance, provided additional funding themselves, and received a personal budget (PGB) more often than adoptive parents of children without special needs.
When adopted children with special needs from
Taiwan were compared with adopted children with special needs from China (N = 189), the results showed that they did not differ in developmental delays at the time of placement nor at the moment of the study. However, adoptive parents of children with special needs from
Taiwan more frequently used physical therapy, education and support around temporary assistance / care.
From these findings, recommendations for practice are made, such as providing maternity care after the adoption, better collaboration between different agencies, specializing in adopted children with special needs by professionals and long-term follow-up care for adopted children with medical problems, possibly leading to developmental delay.
Finally, it is concluded that further research is necessary to gain information about the development of adopted children with special needs. Longitudinal studies, using the Leiden Classification of special needs, are of interest.

▼ This thesis aims to identify the music of current Taiwanese films with regard to their strategies of ‘localisation’, of indicating or alluding to or playing with musical signifiers of place, time and group identity, in the contexts of Taiwanese history and culture. ▼ This report focuses on expanding the understanding of the forces that bring about political participation in
Taiwan during the 2004 presidential election year. The standard socioeconomic status model will serve as a useful baseline. Additional demographic and party related considerations are accumulated onto this socioeconomic model. Event count models such as the binomial and extended beta-binomial regression model will be analyzed and compared. The extended beta-binomial regression model will then be shown to be the superior model in this case. Both models will be estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation method. These two models are applied to
Taiwan's Election and Democratization Study's 2004 post presidential election survey data. This report focuses on investigating the effects of ethnic background, party identification, and strength of partisanship on political participation while trying to confirm commonly expected trends in socioeconomic status, gender, and age effects. Gender and the ethnic background effect were found to have an unclear effect on political participation. The rest of the findings are as expected from the hypotheses.

▼ The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural competence of sport psychology consultants in Taiwan in working with LGBT athletes and dealing with related issues in sport. Semi-structured interviews and grounded theory analysis were used to understand how 12 certified sport psychology consultants in Taiwan perceived their cultural competence in working with LGBT athletes, their experiences of working with LGBT athletes and dealing with related issues, their responses to provided vignettes, and their views of characteristics needed to be LGBT-culturally competent. The results showed participants' cultural background was the first factor influencing their attitudes and LGBT-cultural competence. Three other sources related to participants' LGBT-cultural competence were acquaintance with LGBT friends, working experiences with LGBT athletes, and related training or education. The information and experiences participants got from these sources shaped their open and accepting attitudes, levels of LGBT-cultural competence, and professional philosophies, which in turn, impacted and were evident in their readiness and approaches in working with LGBT athletes and dealing with related issues. They were all willing to work with sexual minority athletes and learn how to work effectively with them. The two different approaches they took in working with LGBT athletes reflected their different LGBT-cultural competence and professional philosophies. Limited LGBT-cultural competence impacted their readiness to deal with related issues, particularly at group and institutional levels. Seeking outside resources was their strategy to compensate for the limited LGBT-cultural competence. Participants and the findings both indicated the need to include LGBT-related educational training in sport psychology training programs. Future studies can explore culturally-competent consulting services from LGBT athletes' perspectives and the effectiveness of implementing LGBT-related educational training.

This study uses a Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) model to evaluate the relative cost efficiency of each local commercial bank in Taiwan. The data was available through the website of Taiwan’s Banking Bureau and Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC). The main result of the SFA model indicates that the banks affiliated with bank holding companies (BHCs) have been increasingly efficient. However, unaffiliated banks have not been keeping pace in regards to efficiency. While this result is based on ownership structure, there are other results that find balance sheet and income statement composition also impact efficiency. For example, there is an increase in efficiency when the amount of loans increases, the price of capital increases, and there is an interaction between the prices of labor and capital.

This thesis explores ways in which expert-centred discourses have shaped post-disaster circumstances in Taiwan. By focusing on the experiences of Indigenous Rukai people affected by Typhoon Morakot in 2009, the thesis contextualises and critiques “expert”-centred disaster response, recovery and reconstruction. Focusing on local Wutai Rukai settings in southern Taiwan, the thesis considers how expert-centred discourses and associated approaches can displace complex pre-disaster histories, geographies and cultures. Starting from a disaster event, these discourses are mobilised with state-sanctioned procedures that assume the incapacity of the local to respond and recover without expert intervention.
The thesis argues that locally-contingent, culturally and historically contextualised people-to-people, people-to-environment and people-to-cosmos relationships fundamentally shape the pre-disaster circumstances of communities and localities affected by so-called natural disasters. Such relationships, glossed as “Country” in Indigenous Australian settings, ground understandings of how the disaster created by Morakot was situated in Wutai Rukai histories and geographies. Institutional capacity deficits embedded within the disaster discourses and approaches were mobilised in the wake of Morakot, contributing directly to procedural vulnerability of Wutai Rukai institutions and reinforcing colonial processes already present prior to the “disaster” of the typhoon. Privileging technical experts in the reconstruction process simultaneously marginalised and silenced more locally and culturally nuanced recovery discourses and approaches. The privileging of technical expertise in such instances is part of a wider process, where the enduring implications of expert-centred discourses reflect how the dominant culture defines successful post-disaster responses in Indigenous domains. In response to the combination of natural and unnatural disasters that characterised the situation of Wutai Rukai people after Morakot, this thesis lays foundations for a different way for the agents and agencies of technical expertise to better understand and engage with the capacities and expertise of local people in their own lives, values, and aspirations in post-disaster settings.

▼ In order to better understand the flow dynamics in the
Taiwan Strait (TS) and the adjacent seas, a series of field experiments were conducted to monitor the currents by deploying 30 SVP drifters, using shipboard ADCP measurements and analyzing historical drifter data in the TS. Examinations of historical drifter data reveal that the surface waters in the TS originate from the shelf of the South China Sea (SCS) in the summer. In wintertime, the mean surface current flows toward the south in the northern TS with a mean speed of approximately 0.3~0.4 m/s. The surface current in the eastern TS mainly flows northward, and it flows southward in the western TS in the fall. The surface waters of the Kuroshio do not intrude into the SCS in summer. Instead, a northeastward current of 0.5~0.7 m/s west of Luzon Island impinges on the Kuroshio across the Luzon Strait. Drifter tracks in the TS are classified according to the wind condition. The first type of drifter tracks is that the drifters move northward in the TS with an intensified flows in the Peng-hu Channel when the southwest monsoon prevails. The second and third types of drifter tracks are under the influence of strong northeast monsoon. The drifters are carried onto the shelf of East China Sea from the Kuroshio or the East China Sea, and then move southward along the TS. Some drifters are grounded at the west coast of
Taiwan, and the others drift through the TS. The third type of drifter tracks show that drifters start from the Luzon Strait and move northward into the TS. However, they can only reach the neighboring area of Peng-Hu archipelagoes, then they change the direction of drifting to the south or southwest and toward the SCS. The fourth type is that drifters are carried northward from the SCS into the northern TS under the weak northeast wind, and then veer to the south when the northeast monsoon intensifies. The fifth type of drifter tracks demonstrates the flow pattern of the northern TS when the northeast monsoon diminishes. This flow pattern belongs to the
Taiwan Warm Current (TWC) in wintertime. The surface speed of TWC is about 0.2~0.4 m/s northward. The second, fourth and fifth flow patterns in the TS have not been quite discovered in previous studies. In-situ marine observations right beneath typhoons are very scanty and valuable. In this study we have found several events with some drifters happened to get caught by typhoons. The maximum speed of drifters near the typhoon center is found to be about 2 m/s. The SST, which is observed by the drifter, reduces 2~4â after the typhoon passes. Our results indicate that for the case of the Typhoon Haitang the Matsu weather station measured a sudden increase of wind speed of about 3 m/s every hour, and the corresponding drifter speed increases 0.52 m/s. There were two events in summer of 2006 when the Typhoon Billis and Saomai passed the northern region of
Taiwan, and some drifters located at the Kuroshio to the north of typhoon were carried rapidly onto the ECS shelf with a maximum speed of about 1.1 m/s. This…

▼ Background and PurposeâStroke has been a leading cause of death for decades in
Taiwan. The mortality and morbidity may be reduced if people have the correct knowledge about stroke. This pilot study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an educational program aiming to increase college studentsâ knowledge of cause of stroke, risk factors, stroke warning signs, and action needed (call 119) when a stroke is suspected.
MethodsâTwo classes (A and B) of college students was used as convenience sample. The program evaluation consisted of a pretest, a 50-minute educational intervention, immediate posttest, and a 12-week follow-up. Class A was tested via close-ended questionnaire while class B open-ended one. Repeated measure one-way ANOVA was used to compare mean score of three tests. Comparisons of mean score between male and female participants of each evaluation point were assessed by t-tests. Stata 7.0 for Windows was used for the analysis at significance level of 0.05.
ResultsâA total of 138 college students participated the educational program. Response rate was 90% and 91% in class A and B respectively with mean age of 22 years. In pretest, all students in class A were able to recognize ≥1 risk factors (RF), ≥1 warning signs (WS). In class B, 5% were not able answer one RS and 24% couldnât name one WS. Of the students, 18-20% in both classes did not recognize the brain as the affected organ in stroke. Mean score improved significantly after the intervention (p<0.001), and dropped after 12 weeks (p<0.001). The effects of gender toward knowledge level were non-significant except posttest in class B (p<0.05).
ConclusionsâOur study showed that college studentsâ knowledge of stroke could be improved by educational program. However, learning effects faded away with time. Our data showed that gender was irrelevant to learning effects. Policy makers may consider improving public knowledge of stroke through properly designated educational program.

▼ Abstract
The genus Machilus comprises about 100 species. They are distributing over the tropics and the subtropical zone, mainly in Easten Asia. Eight species and one variety are native plants of
Taiwan, including M.konishiiHayata, M. kusanoi Hayata, M. mushaensis Lu, M. obovatifolia (Hayata) Kaneh. et. Sasaki, M. obovatifolia var. taiwuensis Lu & Chen, M. philippinensis Merr., M. pseudolongifolia Hayata., M. thunbergii Siebold & Zucc. and M. zuhoensis Hayata. Machilus japonica Siebold & Zucc. is regarded to be native in Japan, Ryukyu and Korea, but not native to
Taiwan. Due to the morphological similarities among several taxa, species identification was a difficult task in the past. Although many scholars have worked on this topic, there are still many unresolved issues left, especially the relationships among M. japonica, M. pseudolongifolia, M. kusanoi, M. zuihonensis and M. mushaensis.
This study aims to study
Taiwan Machilus taxonomy with an emphasis on a detailed morphological study. In addition, essential oils, DNA sequences and isozymes were also studied. The results are list as follows:
1. Morphological taxonomy: Machilus japonica, M. pseudolongifolia., M. kusanoi, M. zuihonensis and M. mushaensis can be firmily classified into 5 taxa by morphologic characters.
2. Essential oils of leaves: The data of essential oils ca differentiate the closely related species, M. japonica, M. pseudolongifolia, M. kusanoi, M. zuihnensis and M. mushaensis from one another. The data also indicated that M. konishii is better placed in the genus Machilus than in the genus Nothophoebe.
3. DNA sequences: The sequences of the AG1 introns data clearly indicate that M. japonica is distinct from M. pseudolongifolia and M. kusanoi.
4. Isozymes: The data of isozyme analyses can distinctly distinguish the closely related species, M. japonica, M. pseudolongifolia and M. kusanoi. The data also can separate the closely related species, M. zuihonensis and M. mushaensis from each other.
With the above data, the author believes that there is no naturally distributed M. japonica in
Taiwan and the name M. pseudolongifolia should be used. Machilus pseudolongifolia, M. kusanoi, M. zuihoensis and M. mushaensis are all endemic to
Taiwan and are morphologically diistinct. However, the DNA sequences of tested marker genes analyzed indicated that genetically they are not well differentiated. The differences among the DNA sequences of these species were not significant could be due to the possibly relatively short divergent time.
Totally, eight indigenous species and one variety of the genus Machilus of
Taiwan are recognized. For each species, a morphological description and classification treatment are provided; also included are geographical distribution, ecology, citation of exsiccatae, illustrations and images of type specimens etc.

▼ ABSTRACT
Sipuncula is a group of unsegmented, coelomate, bilaterally symmetrical and wormlike marine deposit-feeding benthic macro-invertebrates. They are abundant along the intertidal habitats and around 150 species have been recorded worldwide. Sipunculans likely accumulate many anthropogenic contaminants by feeding on the contaminated sediments or benthos, and since they are edible marine species and have long been used in Southwest Pacific cuisine, these contaminants may transfer into the food chain and affect the public health of humans.Trace elements and PAHs are the most common contaminants that appear in the coastal areas worldwide. These contaminants lead to losses in oceanic yield and may hazardous effects on health when they enter the food chain.
The previous studies of sipunculans along the coast of
Taiwan were mostly focused on the taxonomy and distribution of the species living on the hard -ground habitat (rubble), one of the purposes of this study is aiming at the sipunculans on the seagrass beds and wetland soft-ground habitat for species diversity, population dynamic and ecological related research.
Among 10 native sipunculans species, Sipunculus nudus is the dominant species living at the segrass bed and wetland in
Taiwan. Siangshan wetland locates at the area of industrial pollution and S. nudus here is a species with aquatic economy, but is known limitedly of its population and environmental physiology. Therefore, the other purpose of this research is to investigate the S. nudus population in this wetland and analyze the trace elements: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) and the organic pollutants: PAHs, in order to understand the bioaccumulation of S. nudus in the above two types of soft-substrate regarding the pollutants. The main results of this study are as follows:
(1) This study represents a pioneering investigation in
Taiwan regarding the species diversity of sipunculans on the seagrass meadow soft-ground sediment, which describes the species and their morphological characteristics. A total of 42 specimens 10 sipunculan species belonging to 3 families were identified.
(2) It is the first time that S. nudus is realized as the dominant species in these soft habitats. Because of its cultivation potential, its population dynamics and reproductive cycle in Siangshan wetland were studied. The population size of
S. nudus in this area is 0.965± 0.46 ind.m-2 and the sex ratio is around 1:1; the reproductive period is from April to September in the year with the peak reproductive period from May to August; the body length of matured individual is over 11cm.
(3) This is the first report in
Taiwan on the trace elements in sipunculan and their surrounding sediments. The bioaccumulation characteristics of arsenic (As),

▼ The employment rate of youth kept increasing every year, both employers and faculty mention a way to decrease the gap between school study and employment- internship programs. However, look back to Taiwanâs literature review and thesis, there were not so many studies related to the topic. Thus, present study aims to Taiwanese society to study the different attitudes between employers and students.
The U.S. scholars Mark Hall, Gerald Stiles, John Kuzma and Kevin Elliottâs (1995) questionnaire were used in present study. The questionnaire consisted of 5 dimensions, general attitudes and support, students learning outcomes, immediate payoff, academic requirement and Employment/ Students/ Advisorsâ roles. Electronic questionnaire and paper questionnaire were both used to collect the data. After collection, we were using two different analyze skill (i.e. T-test and MANOVA) to examine the disparity and consistency between groups.
The statistical result shows that discrepancy attitudes indeed existed between employers and students, the discrepancy attitude especially between employers and students with no internship experience. In present study, we tried to explain the reasons for the disparity and also consistency attitudes. We bring up some suggestions to human resource people, faculty and students, hoping to better the internship programs and to create the win-win situation.

▼ Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), are widely distributed in the environment. Several studies have demonstrated that these pollutants will cause potential impacts such as carcinogenic and mutagenic for human health. In this study, four different types of sampling stations were chosen. Two of the sampling sites are located in Kaohsiung city, which is an industrialized city with densely population in southern
Taiwan (KHU and KHC). The other sampling sites are in a rural coastal area (KT) and an offshore island (LY), respectively. We determined the concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in the atmosphere to identify the spatial and temporal distributions of PCBs and PBDEs in southern
Taiwan. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal components analysis (PCA) of congener-specific composition of PCBs and PBDEs were performed with the commercial products to investigate the relationship of regional signatures and possible pollution sources. Finally, back trajectory analysis was undertaken to gain a better understanding of long-distance transport contribution to the studied area.
The concentrations of ΣPCBs in the ambient air ranged from 9.51 to 482 pg m-3, with an average concentration of 162±155 pg m-3. The mean PCB concentrations in gas and particle phase were 159±153 pg m-3 and 3.04±2.38 pg m-3, respectively. The concentrations of ΣPBDEs in the ambient air ranged from 3.42 to 166 pg m-3, with an average concentration of 31.7±37.3 pg m-3. The average PBDE concentrations in gas and particle phase were 7.22±6.50 pg m-3 and 23.7±33.4 pg m-3, respectively. Comparison of the total PCB and PBDE concentrations from the four sampling sites showed that the total PCB and PBDE concentrations at the Kaohsiung urban site (KHU) and Kaohsiung coastal site (KHC) were higher than those at a rural coastal site (Kenting, KT) and an offshore island site (Lanyu, LY), suggesting that densely population and heavy industrial park may be the major contributor of PCBs and PBDEs .
Results from HCA, PCA and compositional patterns of PCBs indicate that offshore island site (Lanyu, LY) was different from KHU, KHC and KT. Lower chlorinated congeners (dichlorobiphenyls to hexachlorobiphenyls) were predominant in the gas phase. Since most of the lower molecular weight congeners were below the detection limit, the total PCB concentrations were found at much lower level in LY sampling sites. In addition, a significantly higher proportion of high-chlorinated congeners, was observed at LY, suggesting that there may be local pollution sources in this area. Results from HCA, PCA and compositional patterns of PBDEs indicate that the samples from February and October were dominated by BDE-209, while the samples from July were dominated by BDE-71, BDE-47 and BDE-99, suggesting that this might be due to the significantly low concentrations of suspended particles (PM10) in July. Since much higher temperature was observed in July, these lower brominated congeners may…

▼ The rate of development and change in information technology is accelerating. This has a great effect on nursing. In today's workplace, nurses are required to be highly skilled professionals with both information technology and nursing expertise. Health educators and administrators have encouraged the integration of informatics into the nursing curriculum. In addition, nursing informatics competencies are being recognized as an important capability of nurses. This study concerning nursing informatics competencies within the nursing profession is necessary, because it integrates the dimensions of nursing informatics competencies and suggests a useful starting point to further develop an appropriate nursing curriculum in Taiwan, resulting in better prepared nursing students to succeed in health care systems. This study focused on identifying the nursing informatics competencies required of nurses in Taiwan. A modified Web-based Delphi method was used to implement the study seeking consensus with nursing informatics competencies from two expert groups in nursing. Nursing experts, including 23 nursing educators and 9 nursing administrators in Taiwan, were recruited. The experts responded to 323 items of the Nursing Informatics Competencies Questionnaire, modified by the researcher to include 45 additional items. Three Web-based Delphi rounds were conducted to identify nursing informatics competencies required of nurses in Taiwan. Analysis included detailed item analysis and comparison of educators' and administrators' ratings using Fisher's exact test. Competencies that met 60% or greater agreement of item importance and appropriate level of nursing practice were included. By the conclusion of Round 3, 318 nursing informatics competencies had achieved consensus of item importance and appropriate level of nursing practice. There was a high degree of agreement regarding specific nursing informatics competencies requirement for nurses in Taiwan. In addition, the study updated the list of nursing informatics competency requirements, which has international relevance since information technology is a global track in the nursing profession.

▼ In Taiwan, the history of aquaculture spans over three hundred years and the
breakthroughs in the artificial propagation of finfish and shrimp effectively reduced
the industries' reliance on wild fry, thereby stabilizing commercial operations and
overcoming the barriers for expansion. Taiwan is located very close to Japan, one of
the biggest seafood importers in the world, which has also benefited the development
of aquaculture. However, the growing problems of water pollution and the
increasingly high environmental costs generated by aquaculture ventures have made
Taiwan experience a declining trend in recent years.
To overcome those constraints, three main areas are described, which then form the
basis of this study.
(1). Adjustment of existing production practices - Milkfish culture, one of the most
vulnerable sectors suffering from price fluctuation is used as an example to
understand both the production cost, market attributes and the ways in which impacts
of variations between production and price can be reduced.
(2). Improving existing systems - One of the methods to reduce the use of
underground water is to use super intensive culture in which high densities are stable
and water use minimised, and has been tried in Taiwan for eels. However, the cost and benefits must be evaluated and as most eel products are exported to the Japanese market, it is very important to examine the comparative advantages against other
countries.
(3). Develop new systems- One of the solutions to the constraints of land-based
aquaculture in Taiwan is to develop seawater-based cage culture. This has been
developed in a limited degree in Ping-Tong and Pen-Hu counties but the feasibility
and profitability have not been investigated.
Based on 274 milkfish farms, 63 traditional eel farms, 5 intensive eel farms, 22 cage
culture farms and 133 consumers from different zones, constituted the primary data, which combined with other secondary data constructed this investigation.
The milkfish sector was not economically sound. Farm size in the categories of 4-<5
ha could appear to be more profitable. Cold weather and unstable in price made this
industry more risky. The price was very unstable and strongly correlated to seasonal
variation of production.
The various forms of average financial appraisal have shown that intensive eel culture has a slight advantage over traditional eel culture. However, traditional eel culture has a higher distribution and the financial advantage of intensive culture is primarily due to the cheaper eel seed. The mass production of eel from China has caused Taiwan to lose the comparative advantage in roasted eel for the Japanese market.
Cage culture is a new aquaculture venture in Taiwan. The structure of cages, feed and
other facilities still need to be improved. Although Dumerils's Amberjack (Seriola
dumerili) and red porgy (Pagrus major) can make higher profits than other species,
fish farmers still have great expectation for cobia (Rachycentron canadus). As
Taiwan's market is not…

▼ Since it has booming business opportunities,
Taiwan is shifting from
a pleasure destination to business one. Business travel has become one
significant segment of
Taiwan tourism industry. However, tourism is not a
major source of income for the Taiwanese. Consequently, there is less
material discussing the spending style of business travelers in
Taiwan.
An overview of
Taiwan tourism based on the statistics data from
Tourism Bureau in
Taiwan was done to give a general idea. The spending
style of business travelers tried to identify the special items purchased by
business travelers.
This study followed the way for the Corporate Travel Index in US
and changed the geographic scope from US to
Taiwan. Three factors were
considered to the per diem cost in
Taiwan. These are: hotel rate, meal
price and car rental cost. The samples used were from
Taiwan Hotel &
Restaurant Guide. 1993. Car rental companies were from the Yellow
Pages. 1993.
After data processing, the total per diem cost in
Taiwan is US $
231.67. That is far more expensive than US according to Corporate Travel
Index. 1993 in US. Possible reasons were stated and some useful
suggestions were recommend in this study.
