▼ This thesis investigates the proximate determinants of the observed differences in levels and growth rates of output per worker across the 69 major cities in China during 1994-2010, and asks the following two questions to develop a better understanding of the regional economic development and growth in the second largest economy of the world: (i) Why are some cities so much richer than others? (ii) What drives economic growth in Chinese cities? I utilise growth and development accounting approaches to answer these questions. I find that growth in the first-tier cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen) enjoy the highest contribution from total factor productivity (TFP) growth. I find a clear distinction between Tier-1 cities and the rest. In terms of growth rates, growth in Tier-1 cities is driven primarily by TFP growth. On the other hand, TFP growth contributes a lot less to growth in Tier-2 and 3 cities. Growth in Tier-2 and 3 cities depends overwhelmingly on accumulation of physical capital. Rapid accumulation of physical capital in Tier-2 cities has not closed the gap in income levels between them and Tier-1 cities. Similarly, growth in human capital has played a minor role. In terms of income levels, I find that TFP levels are highly correlated with income levels in 2010. I also find a declining role of variation in factor endowments in explaining variation in income levels. My results cast doubt on the long-run sustainability of growth in the second- and the third-tier cities as they have relied too much on physical capital deepening. In order to avoid a growth slow-down in the future, Chinese cities should focus more on improving productivity and less on capital deepening. Productivity growth is not only crucial for the sustainability of economic reform programs in the short term but also a major factor for China to converge to per capita income levels in developed countries in the long term. ▼ This thesis includes two essays that analyze growth implications of emigration and immigration. The first chapter studies the impact of emigrants with different education levels on their home countries' GDP per worker and its factors obtained by a production function decomposition. It uses migration data from 195 countries of origin to 30 major destination OECD countries in 1990 and 2000 and applies an instrumental variable approach to correct for endogeneity bias in estimating this impact. Pull factors of migration such as demand for emigrants' labor in destination countries and migrants' networks serve as a basis for instrument construction. Estimation results indicate that growth in emigration rates increases growth in GDP per worker in low and lower-middle income countries for all education groups of emigrants, primarily driven by improvements in total factor productivity (TFP). In contrast, there is no robust significant impact of emigration on other components of GDP. The second chapter studies the impact of immigrant labor on GDP per worker in the U.S. and its components obtained by a production function decomposition, including total factor productivity (TFP), the capital-output ratio, average hours worked, and skill intensity, defined as a productivity-weighted Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) function of high-skill and low-skill workers. It uses industry-level data over the period of 1960-2005 and applies two-step Difference Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) with instruments constructed using past distributions of immigrants across industries. The estimation results show that GDP per worker in an industry increases by about 2.24-2.63 percent in response to a one percent increase in the share of immigrants in total employment of the industry. These results are primarily driven by TFP growth with a magnitude of 2.08-2.21 and average hours worked: 0.23-0.29. ▼ This dissertation considers two distinct issues in macroeconomics. The first and second chapters look at the effects of changes in tax policy on productivity of an economy from an empirical and theoretical stand point. The third chapter concerns the implications of cross-national migration for long-run growth and welfare. In the first chapter, I analyze the effects of tax policy changes on US total factor productivity (TFP). A substantial fraction of the income differences between countries can be explained by differences in TFP. Thus it is important to know the effects of policy changes on TFP. This is the first study that looks at the effect of changes in tax policy on TFP. Data on tax shocks comes from the sources used by Romer and Romer (2009). Empirical estimates show that a 1 percent permanent exogenous rise in total taxes lowers TFP by up to 1.75 percent in the long run. The drop in output associated with the increase in taxes is between 2 and 3 percent. Thus the change in TFP explains most of the movement in output that follows a tax change. Individual income taxes have a strong and significant effect on TFP whereas corporate income taxes do not significantly affect TFP or most other macroeconomic variables. The analysis also shows that the effects of tax changes on output and on observable inputs have become smaller over time while the effects on TFP and on wages have become larger over time. In the second chapter, I build a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model to explain the dynamic macroeconomic effects of tax changes. The model has two key features: learning-by-doing at the worker level and endogenous TFP evolution whereby TFP growth depends on investment and human capital. When I calibrate the learning-by-doing and TFP evolution processes using micro evidence on the effect of human capital accumulation on productivity, the effect of taxes on TFP in the model is substantially less elastic than in the data. When I instead select parameters to match key aggregate moments, the estimated model is successful in accounting for the qualitative and quantitative nature of the empirical results. However, this requires stronger learning-by-doing than seems reasonable given the microeconomic evidence. I argue that the gap between the model and data may arise because some of the tax changes labeled as exogenous by Romer and Romer (2009) are in fact endogenous in which case the empirical results would overstate the true effects of tax changes on TFP. The difference between model and data may also arise because of the model not being rich enough. The model drives its components from both the business cycle and endogenous growth literature, thus the gap between model and data perhaps shows that the literature is not adequate in explaining observed patterns in the data. ▼ Any one organization or agency, whether for-profit or non-profit organizations that are seeking to enhance their efficiency, improve production technology, thereby achieving the goal of improving productivity, with a view to the current competitive environment. Efficiency measurement is very important, it can help decision makers understand whether the organization achieve technology progress and innovation objectives. In recent years, the government and civil organizations devote themselves to measure the change of organizational efficiency and productivity. Academia constantly research and develop various models of efficiency and productivity analysis, and application to actual cases analysis. Efficiency and productivity analysis has leapt to the mainstream of production economic studies. This empirical study adopts the census data of the classification of the Chamber of Commerce and industry of manufacturing in Taiwan, using two-stage approach to explore dynamic agglomeration externalities of 2-digit manufacturing. In the first stage, we apply dynamic network data envelopment analysis and Malmquist productivity index to calculate static efficiency and dynamic efficiency of 2-digit manufacturing. In the second stage, we apply Tobit regression analysis to verify a manufacturing geographical concentration effects on productive efficiency. We also adopt two-stage least squares methods (2SLS) to validate dynamic agglomeration externalities effects of manufacturing. Based on the results of this empical study, we propose some specific practical policy alternatives and management strategies. In the last 20 years, the strctures of Taiwan manufacturing industries have significant changes, the livelihood industry and of the sharp decline in industry, the chemical industry, electronics industry, metal machinery industry is growing fast. There is an obvous agglomeration tendency toward northern Taiwan region. In static efficiency, labour-intensive manufacturing industries tend to be diminishing return to scale rendering, while knowledge-intensive industries are rendering the increasing trend. The scale efficiency of eastern region manufacturing is very low, resulting in their productive efficiency significantly lower than the northern, central, southern regional manufacturing. In dynamic efficiency, the total factor productivity (TFP) of Taiwan manufacturing industries are rendering the growth trend, achieving the goal of innovation effect. However, the technical efficiency of manufacturing are rendering decline trend. This study found that the most important impact factor on production efficiency is the internal economies of scale. Localization economies, urbanization economies, and other static agglomeration economies external effect gradually reduce. Moreover, this study also found that Taiwan manufacturing industries have notable MAR professional dynamic external economics and notable Porter regional competitive dynamic external economic effect. Este Trabalho Final de Mestrado teve como objetivo proceder a uma análise da produtividade na produção de hortícolas dos países da União Europeia 27 (UE-27) no período 2004-2012. A metodologia aplicada teve por base o cálculo, em folha Excel, de índices TFP no tempo e no espaço e fez uso da base de dados FADN e do Eurostat. O índice TFP é uma medida de produtividade marginal. No tempo, medem-se flutuações de um ano para o outro. No espaço, medem-se flutuações de cada país em relação à média da UE. A análise foi seguida de uma análise Cluster feita em SPSS, onde se distinguiram grupos de países de acordo com os índices TFPt e TFPs médios obtidos. Por fim foi corrida uma regressão em STATA, de forma a perceber que variáveis influenciam as variações de TFP. Os resultados mostram que os países com índices TFPt maiores e/ou maior evolução são a Hungria, a Letónia e a República Checa. Os países com índices TFPs maiores e/ou maior evolução do TFP são a Itália, a Espanha e a Lituânia. Com a análise K-means Cluster foi possível identificar quatro grupos de países que se distinguem pelo índice TFPs. Sendo estes por ordem decrescente o grupo 1 (Grécia, Espanha, Itália e Lituânia), 2 (Bélgica, Hungria, Polónia e Reino Unido), 3 (Bulgária, Dinamarca, Alemanha, França, Letónia, Holanda, Portugal e Suécia) e 4 (República Checa, Malta, Roménia e Finlândia). Com a regressão foi possível constatar que para o índice TFPt as variáveis significantes são a crise, a percentagem de SAU em estufa, a intensidade da produção em capital e o tempo sendo que apenas esta última afecta de forma positiva. No índice TFPs, todas as variáveis significativas (intensidade da produção em capital, trabalho familiar e tempo) afectam negativamente. Palavras-chave: Benchmarking, Índice TFP, Produtividade.

The objective of this Master’s final paper was to analyze the productivity in terms of vegetable production in the European Union 27 (EU-27) countries during the years between 2004 and 2012. The methodology adopted consisted in using FADN and Eurostat databases to compute a Total Factor Productivity (TFP) index in terms of time and space. The TFP index is a measure of marginal productivity. In time, it measures fluctuations in relation to the previous year, while in space, it measures fluctuations of each country in relation to the EU average. Subsequently, the analysis was carried out using the SPSS software through a Cluster analysis that allowed to group the different countries given their average TPFt and TPFs indexes. Lastly, STATA was used to run a truncated regression to understand which variables influence the TFP variations. Results showed that the countries with greater TFPt indexes and/or higher levels of development are Hungary, Latvia and Czech Republic, whilst for TFPs these countries are Italy, Spain and Lithuania. Using the K-means Cluster analysis it was possible to identify four groups of countries that distinguish themselves by their TFPs indexes. ▼ Increases in efficiency, reduction of turnaround time, and many other factors have long influenced the pursuit of new technologies in chemistry. With the goal of effective synthesis of previously unattainable compounds and the more efficient synthesis of libraries of compounds, these methods continue to evolve and have grown to include tandem orientation of various tools. Through the use of flow systems, many significant advances have been made in the field of organic synthesis: for example, unattended automation, resin tethered reagents, and extensive library production. New methodology and instrumentation of flow systems are constantly evolving and adapting to new developing research. The goal of this research project was to apply flow chemistry to various projects, produce novel syntheses of various compounds that, in the end, demonstrate the versatility of flow methodology.; The synthesis of amide libraries was explored in a project executed at Merck & Co., Inc. The goal of this project was to use the Syrris AFRICA system to decrease the turnaround time between synthesis and screening of libraries of compounds. With the improvement on the turnover time of libraries, the efficiency and throughput of the drug discovery process would largely improve by allowing the screening many additional extended libraries with ease. Also, the method included unattended synthesis of these libraries, with a carboxylic acid tethered to a macroporous (MP) resin via an activated tetrafluorophenol (TFP) ester linkage. In this project, a library of 20 pure amides was synthesized consecutively, and in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which provided the molecules a straight route to assay. The TFP-MP resin column was re-used over 36 times, with reproducible efficiency, in a coupling time of an hour.; A project was then initiated that extended this resin-bound reaction technology further to include methodology for efficient, high-throughput radiolabeling of many different substrates, ranging from small molecules to proteins and other biomolecules. Rapid and direct fluorination of biologically sensitive molecules is not possible. The use of a linker between the molecule and the radiolabel is needed and had to be chosen carefully. After exploring the use of 4-fluorobenzaldehyde as a fluorine source and boc-aminooxyacetic acid as a linker, a N-succinimidyl-4-fluorobenzoate moiety was chosen to fulfill both requirements. A synthetic route was developed to rapidly radiolabel proteins and peptides with ease. These labeled molecules may be used to develop new imaging agents for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging.

▼ The objective of this dissertation is to explain the rapid growth of value added in the service sector in India, and, to examine the factors driving this services' led growth in the economy. In the first chapter of this dissertation, I record the empirical data facts on output, employment and trade, for the three principal sectors of the economy, namely, agriculture, industry and services. This is followed by a sectoral growth accounting exercise which I conduct for the 1980-2003 period. Two empirical facts emerge from the analysis: changes in total factor productivity (TFP) were the largest source of service sector value added growth in India and a sharp acceleration in industrial and services ' trade occurred following liberalization in 1991. Motivated by these findings, in the second chapter of this dissertation, I build a simple three sector growth model with two main inputs: growth in sectoral TFP and trade in industry and services. The model is calibrated to Indian sectoral data across two steady state years during which trade is balanced. The results from this chapter indicate that productivity growth versus trade has a more important role in capturing the sectoral composition of GDP in India. In the second chapter of my dissertation, I extend the steady state analysis and develop a three sector growth model to evaluate the quantitative performance of differential sectoral TFP growth in accounting for the structural transformation of India during the 1980-2003 period.; The model is calibrated to Indian data using average growth rates of sectoral TFP as primary inputs, and performs well in accounting for the evolution of sectoral value added shares and the growth rates of these shares over the period 1980-2003. Moreover, the performance of the model improves significantly when the post 1991 increase in service sector TFP growth is accounted for. I find that the liberalization policies adopted by India from 1991, especially the deregulation and privatization of business and communications services, and quite possibly technological progress, explain the improvement in service sector TFP, and hence the dominance of service sector activity in India’s recent GDP growth. Este trabalho discute a instituição TFP e retoma a história da Igreja Católica no Brasil e no mundo nos anos que antecederam sua fundação (1960). O objetivo deste é justamente analisar a TFP enquanto um movimento dentro da Igreja Católica durante os anos em que viveu seu fundador, Plínio Corrêa de Oliveira. Embora externamente católica, a TFP muitas vezes demonstrou discrepância entre suas idéias e práticas e a pregação da Igreja. Seria então um movimento ultramontano conservador ou uma seita? Simplesmente afirmar que a TFP foi um reduto ultramontano ou sectário não a caracterizaria corretamente, dado que são características diferentes e, teoricamente, incompatíveis. Porém, podemos dizer que a TFP conciliou o Ultramontanismo, externamente, com um Sectarismo, internamente, fazendo dela um movimento ímpar, com características muito próprias. Este trabalho utilizou em sua análise referências bibliográficas da própria TFP, bem como obras publicadas por ex-membros da instituição, além de livros de autores que de maneira geral já discutiram o tema seita e ultramontanismo em outros contextos. A TFP, considerada assim neste trabalho, foi católica oficialmente, jamais a Igreja se pronunciou ao contrário, teve fortes características sectárias e ao lado do ultramontanismo tradicional, foi um movimento não classificável de maneira generalizada, mas único em suas posturas

This paper discusses the institution TFP and repeats, in principle, the history of the Catholic Church in Brazil and the world in the years preceding the founding of the TFP (1960). The purpose of this is precisely analyze the TFP as a movement within the Catholic Church over the years that lived its founder, Plínio Corrêa de Oliveira. Although externally Catholic, the TFP, often showed discrepancies between their ideas and practices and preaching of the Church. It then traditional ultramountainous movement or a sect? Simply say that the TFP has been a ultramountainous sanctuary or a sectarian or not to characterize correctly, because they are different concepts, and theoreticalment incompatible, but that seemed TFP reconcile internally, making it and odd move, with characteristic very own. This work used in its analysis of the references your TFP, as well as works published by egresses the institution, in addition to books of authors who generally already discussed the issue and Ultramountainism or sect in other contexts. ▼ This study examines the implication of international migrants‘ remittance, total factor productivity (TFP) and economic development in Africa. It is based on three empirical papers. The first empirical chapter looks at the effect of international migrants‘ remittances on labour productivity and capital accumulation. In this study we conceptualise how remittances received in Africa could lead to labour productivity and capital accumulation. The study also tested the interactive effect of remittances and human capital on capital accumulation. The study employs a panel of twenty-five African countries across a twenty-three-year period (1990 – 2013) using the two-step generalised methods of moment estimator and finds that remittance promotes labour productivity. While the study does find evidence that remittances promote capital accumulation; it does show that the interactive effect of remittance and human capital largely impacts capital accumulation. Thus, remittance inflows only lead to capital accumulation if recipients are skilled and trained. The second paper examines the effect of international migrants‘ remittance on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) within sampled African countries. The study first employs the output based non-parametric Malmquist productivity index- Data Envelope Analysis in a macroeconomic context to segregate the component of TFP into technical change, efficiency and TFP growth. In this context, the real GDP is the output that is produced by the countries; while the physical capital stock and labour are the set of inputs. The study further investigates the consequence of migrants‘ remittances on each component of TFP by the use of the Seemingly Unrelated Regression estimation technique on a panel of twenty-three African countries across a twenty-three-year period (1990 – 2013). The study shows that international migrants‘ remittances, although received by households, are a valuable source of capital that increases technical change (innovation) and spurs the growth in total factor productivity, but does not encourage efficiency. ▼ My dissertation consists of two independent essays on macroeconomic volatility and monetary economics respectively. The first essay explores the implications of imperfect information on macroeconomic volatility. It offers a micro-founded theory of time variation in the volatility of aggregate economic activity based on rational inattention. I consider a dynamic general equilibrium model in which firms are limited in their ability to process information and allocate their limited attention across aggregate and idiosyncratic states. According to the model, a decrease in the volatility of aggregate shocks causes the firms optimally to allocate less attention to the aggregate environment. As a result, the firms' responses, and therefore the aggregate response, becomes less sensitive to aggregate shocks, amplifying the effect of the initial change in aggregate shock volatility. As an application, I use the model to explain the Great Moderation, the well-documented significant decline in aggregate volatility in the U.S. between 1984 and 2006. The exercise is disciplined by measurements of the changes in aggregate and idiosyncratic volatilities. The model can account for 90% of the observed decline in aggregate output volatility. 67% of the decline is due to the direct effect of the drop in the volatility of aggregate technology shocks and the other 23% captures the volatility amplification effect due to the optimal attention reallocation from aggregate to idiosyncratic shocks. A version of the model without rational inattention can capture the former effect but not the latter. The second essay examines the redistributive effects of monetary policy using a dynamic general equilibrium model with heterogenous agents. I study the long-run effects of inflation on output, consumption and welfare, as well as the distribution of wealth in the economy. Unlike in representative agent models, heterogeneity can potentially allow for beneficial effects of inflation. ▼ In this dissertation I examine sources of growth in the formal manufacturing sector in India, from 1970 to 2003. I consider both all-India trends and state-level trends in the growth of resource efficiency, measured by TFP, and the relative contribution of TFP growth to output growth in manufacturing, as compared to capital accumulation. At the state level, I also examine the relationship between per-capita income and trends in output per worker and TFP in the manufacturing sector. Finally, in a spatial econometric framework, I test for the presence and magnitude of network spillovers from infrastructure, including national and state highways, and electricity generation capacity, on manufacturing TFP levels across states. My work contributes to an on-going debate on the response of manufacturing sector TFP to the implementation of economic reforms in India, in the 1980s and 1990s. At the regional level, this dissertation addresses not only the literature on the causes behind rising income inequality across states, but also on the role of infrastructure on regional growth, restricting attention to the manufacturing sector. The results of this dissertation show that at the all-India level and at the state level, manufacturing sector TFP growth accelerated in India during periods of economic reform. The contribution of TFP growth to output growth increased in the 1990s relative to earlier periods, and exceeded the contribution of capital accumulation. At the state level, I find evidence of convergence in growth rates of output per worker and TFP in manufacturing. I do not find evidence of a significant correlation between output per worker in manufacturing and state per-capita incomes. Given the relatively small share of the manufacturing sector in state GDP on average, these results imply that the source of rising income inequalities across states may not be manufacturing. Finally, I find some evidence to suggest that there exist positive network spillovers from physical infrastructure on manufacturing sector TFP. The results suggest that doubling the stock of national and state highways, and electricity generation capacity can lead to a nine percent increase in manufacturing sector output. ▼ My studies focus on the determinants and aggregate implications of innovation and productivity. This dissertation includes three chapters. Chapter 1 in on the role of R&D investment in determining the relationship between finance and total factor productivity (TFP). Chapter 2 is on the quantification of the costs and benefits of R&D and patent. The last Chapter provides an analysis of the driving forces behind the patent growth in China. Firms in developing countries are less innovative than that are in developed economies. A large body of literature has documented that the lack of financial support has hindered firms from participating in R&D investment. How much does the R\&D channel account for the productivity loss caused by financial constraints? How does R&D investment affect the efficacy of self-financing in the reduction of TFP losses? In Chapter 1, I attempt to shed light on each of these questions by using a quantitative model of R&D investment with financial frictions. In the model, R&D investment, which affects productivity evolution endogenously, is subject to financial constraints. I parameterize the model with production, innovation, and balance sheet data from manufacturing firms in China, a country with relatively less developed financial markets. Through the lens of the model, I first quantify static and dynamic TFP losses. I then analyze the transition dynamics and the steady state of the model. Finally, to gauge the importance of R&D investment for understanding the relationship between finance and TFP, I compare the results of the estimated model with a model's special case in which the productivity process is exogenous. The estimated model implies sizeable static TFP losses caused by capital misallocation and dynamic TFP losses from distorting R&D investment. The accumulation of internal funds reduces the static TFP loss gradually. In contrast, because R&D has a persistent effect on productivity, the dynamic TFP loss rises initially and declines later. Compared to a model with exogenous productivity, innovation investment makes firms less able to use self-financing to reduce TFP losses and prolongs the transition. Endogenous productivity growth amplifies the gains in TFP and output from financial reform and leads to a longer-lasting consequence from a credit crunch. Improving the pledge-ability of intangible assets in China to be the US level reduces the static TFP loss only 0.4%, but the dynamic TFP loss by 7.1%. I explore several policy implications of the quantitative model. First, I consider a financial reform that relaxes the credit constraints permanently. I find that the boosting effects of financial reform on aggregate TFP and output are amplified when considering the endogenous response of R\&D investment. Second, I study a credit crunch by tightening the financial constraints for one period. I show that the detrimental impact of a credit crunch on aggregate TFP and output tends to be longer-lasting when I account for the endogenous growth of productivity. ▼ This doctoral thesis consists of three essays. In the first essay I investigate the presence of productivity convergence in eight regional pulp and paper industries of U.S. and Canada over the period of 1971-2005. Expectation of productivity convergence in the pulp and paper industries of Canadian provinces and of the states of its southern neighbour is high since they are trading partners with fairly high level of exchanges in both pulp and paper products. Moreover, they share a common production technology that changed very little over the last century. I supplement the North-American regional data with national data for two Nordic countries, Finland and Sweden, which provides a scope to compare the productivity performances of four leading players in global pulp and paper industry. I find evidence in favour of the catch-up hypothesis among the regional pulp and paper industries of U.S. and Canada in my sample. The growth performance is at the advantage of Canadian provinces relative to their U.S. counterparts. However, it is not good enough to surpass the growth rates of this industry in the two Nordic countries. It is well-known that econometric productivity estimation using flexible functional forms often encounter violations of curvature conditions. However, the productivity literature does not provide any guidance on the selection of appropriate functional forms once they satisfy the theoretical regularity conditions. The second chapter of my thesis provides an empirical evidence that imposing local curvature conditions on the flexible functional forms affect total factor productivity (TFP) estimates in addition to the elasticity estimates. Moreover, I use this as a criterion for evaluating the performances of three widely used locally flexible cost functional forms - the translog (TL), the Generalized Leontief (GL), and the Normalized Quadratic (NQ) - in providing TFP estimates. Results suggest that the NQ model performs better than the other two functional forms in providing TFP estimates. The third essay capitalizes on newly available high frequency energy consumption data from commercial buildings in the District of Columbia (DC) to provide novel insights on the realized energy use impacts of energy efficiency standards in commercial buildings. Combining these data with hourly weather data and information on tenancy contract structure I evaluate the impacts of energy standards, contractual structure of utility bill payments, and energy star labeling on account level electricity consumption. Using this unique panel dataset, the analysis takes advantage of detailed building-level characteristics and the heterogeneity in the building age distribution, resulting in buildings constructed before and after mandatory energy standards came into effect. Estimation results suggest that in commercial buildings constructed under a code, electricity consumption is lower by about 0.48 kWh per cooling degree hour. When tenants pay for their own utilities, consumption is lower by 0.82 kWh per cooling degree hour.…

▼ My thesis consists of three chapters that contribute to the study of input misallocation and TFP growth in China. In Chapter 2, I compare the misallocation of intermediate goods to those of capital and labor, which have been extensively studied in the literature. To measure misallocation, I compute the dispersion of marginal products of intermediate goods across firms, and the potential output gains by eliminating this dispersion in China Industrial Enterprise Survey (CIES) data. Although the within-industry dispersion of marginal products of intermediates is smaller than that of capital and labor, gross output and value added gains from reallocating intermediate goods are 6 and 14 times those from capital and labor reallocations. If intermediate goods, capital and labor are reallocated to equalize their marginal products, the total value added gain in the CIES is 550%, much greater than the 98% obtained under the value added approach in the literature (i.e. Hsieh and Klenow, 2009). This suggests that with its 74% revenue share and input complementarity, distortions and frictions through intermediate goods could be a promising channel to account for sizable misallocation in China’s data. I further find suggestive evidence of preorder friction: intermediate goods need half a year to pre-order, which gives rise to borrowing constraints in paying for intermediates. Similar to capital, marginal products of intermediates are found to be more dispersed among potentially constrained firms with low net worth, as one would expect if borrowing constraints exist. Motivated by the findings in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 quantifies the novel role of pre-order friction and borrowing constraints on intermediate goods in accounting for misallocation in the CIES data (Hsieh and Klenow, 2009; Brandt, Van Biesebroeck, and Zhang, 2012). With a gross output production function, I incorporate intermediate goods frictions into the firm investment model of Cooper and Haltiwanger (2006). Firms order and prepay for a fraction of intermediate goods one period in advance (pre-order), and face one borrowing constraint on capital and intermediate goods. Firms also face capital adjustment costs. I measure misallocation by the potential gross output gain as a percentage of actual gross output, if intermediate goods, capital and labor are hypothetically reallocated to equalize marginal products across firms. Over 1998-2007, gross output misallocation in the CIES data averages 140 percent. The model accounts for around 70 percent of this misallocation, when calibrated to key moments in firm-level debt, productivity and market share distribution in the CIES data. Half of the misallocation in the model is attributed to intermediate goods frictions: 34 percent from borrowing constraints, and 16 percent from pre-order. The misallocation literature has found distortions that inefficiently allocate resources across production units can result in a significant aggregate productivity loss, even without deterioration in the underlying productivity distribution. However, with endogenous managerial capital investment decisions, distortions affect the underlying productivity distribution in addition to reallocating resources across production units. The first chapter quantifies the effect of progressive taxation in a model with endogenous managerial capital investment decisions. Compared to proportional taxation that raises the same tax revenue, progressive taxation distorts the economy more severely. The more progressive is taxation, the less incentive agents have to invest in their managerial capital. This follows because higher managerial capital implies higher profit, which induces higher tax rates. Thus, compared to a proportional tax regime that raises the same tax revenue, under progressive taxation, agents invest less in their managerial capital and the distribution of income is less dispersed. In addition, the equilibrium values of TFP, total output, employment share of large firms are distorted relative to their values under proportional taxation. Hence, progressive taxation improves equality in the economy in exchange for efficiency. In the second chapter I examine the effects of credit constraint in a model with endogenous managerial capital investment decisions. If agents can optimally invest in their managerial capital, limited access to physical capital will encourage managers to substitute away from physical capital to investment in managerial capital. The accumulation of managerial capital and the change in the underlying productivity distribution will mitigate the adverse effects of misallocation caused by the credit constraint on the economy. Using calibration, I show that measured TFP could improve with a tighter credit constraint. The third chapter adds stochastic component to the model with endogenous managerial capital investment decision and credit constraints. I find that with sufficiently large second moment shock to the managerial skill accumulation function, the mitigation effect induced by optimal managerial capital investment decision is itself mitigated.
