▼ Society has gripped the concept of road transport and has utilised it for social, personal and economic gain. Amidst the apparent benefits, a number of concerns exist around the dangers, congestion, and monetary loss associated with vehicular transport. To counteract this, the introduction of driverless vehicles is being discussed by manufacturers and the Government. Whilst there are a number of apparent benefits, there is an overwhelming need to consider public perception and acceptance of autonomous vehicles. This research study therefore investigates the aforementioned, analysing and presenting the major issues and concerns related to their uptake.
An interview and focus group based approach was adopted for this research, using the Charmaz (2006) constructivist grounded theory methodology. Interviews were conducted with a range of stakeholders and the results of the study detailed that the environment the vehicle and user operate in presents associated issues influencing perceptions, and that technology acceptance is strongly influenced by levels of Motivation in Intention, Acceptance/Usage and Control. Furthermore, acceptance is perceived differently by various stakeholder groups, each with their individual concerns and speculations. The discussion of the study considers the gathered perception to ascertain how best to introduce autonomous vehicles to the public market, highlighting and satisfying the current implications of doing so. This study highlights the need for further research in this discipline, based on the identification of many knowledge gaps. Further work is discussed and recommended in order to combat the limitations and opportunities identified within this thesis.

▼ This thesis reports an investigation into the relationships between the tyre strain feature and tyre operating conditions based on finite element analysis and experiments for the development of a strain-based intelligent tyre system, which could estimate the tyre operating characteristics for optimising vehicle dynamics control and improving vehicle safety. A 175/505R13 tyre is adopted as the subject of this study. An efficient and effective material property determination procedure is developed for investigating the rubber and reinforcement material properties by experiment. Considering the possibility of the absence of tyre composite profile due to proprietary protection by tyre manufacturer, a novel imagebased method is developed to capture the tyre geometry feature from the tyre product cut cross-section. Both the 2D and 3D finite element tyre models are created in the commercial finite element code ABAQUS. The generated finite element tyre models are validated with experimental data and then adopted to construct the comprehensive relationship between tyre strain feature and tyre operating characteristics. Experimental validation of these estimation models are implemented based on a custom designed test system. Finally, some recommendations are presented for improving the capability of the finite element tyre model and the strain-based intelligent tyre test system.

Considering the possibility of the absence of tyre composite profile due to proprietary protection by tyre manufacturer, a novel imagebased method is developed to capture the tyre geometry feature from the tyre product cut cross-section. Both the 2D and 3D finite element tyre models are created in the commercial finite element code ABAQUS. The generated finite element tyre models are validated with experimental data and then adopted to construct the comprehensive relationship between tyre strain feature and tyre operating characteristics. Experimental validation of these estimation models are implemented based on a custom designed test system. Finally, some recommendations are presented for improving the capability of the finite element tyre model and the strain-based intelligent tyre test system.

▼ It is the purpose of this study to examine certain stylistic features of the medieval French chronicle of Robert de Clari, La Conquête de Constantinople, and to provide necessary biographical data concerning the author and historical information pertaining to the period of history which the chronicle describes. Despite the early state of development of the French language, it was found that the chronicle exhibited a conscious application of rudimentary stylistic devices, such as dialogue and narrative effectively employed, the use of the digression as a stylistic device, and varied methods of description. Philippe Lauer's edition of La Conquête de Constantinople prepared for the Classiques Français du Moyen Age Series, was the basis of the study. An outline of the chronicle has been included which contains notes of an historical nature to clarify certain inaccuracies within the work. Maps illustrating the route of the Fourth Crusade and a plan of the city of Constantinople in 1204, date of the Fourth Crusade, have been included in an appendix.

▼ Asynchronous multiplexing schemes are efficient than synchronous schemes, in a
bursty traffic environment of multiple access local area network (LAN), as fixed
bandwidth is not allocated among the users and there is no access delay. Fiber-
Optic Code-Division Multiple Access (FO-CDMA) is one such asynchronous multiplexing
scheme suitable for high speed LAN networks. While FO-CDMA offers
potential benefits it also faces challenges in three diverse areas which are
1) coding algorithms and schemes
2) advanced encoding and decoding hardware and
3) network architecture.
In this thesis, as a solution to the first challenge, we propose the design and
construction of a new family of codes, wavelength/time multiple-pulses-per-row
(W/
T MPR) codes. These codes have good cardinality, spectral efficiency and
minimal cross-correlation values. Performance analysis of the W/
T MPR codes is
carried out and found to be superior to other codes.
In unipolar 1-D Optical Orthogonal Codes (OOCs) proposed by Salehi et al.,
the ratio of code length/code weight grows rapidly as the number of users is increased
for a reasonable weight. Hence, for a given pulse width, the data rate decreases
or in other words for a given data rate very narrow pulses have to be used,
because of which dispersion effects will be dominant. To overcome the drawbacks
of non-linear effects in large spread sequences of 1-D unipolar codes in FO-CDMA
networks, several two-dimensional codes have been proposed. Wavelength-time
(W/
T) encoding of the two-dimensional codes is practical in FO-CDMA networks.
W/
T codes reported so far can be classified mainly into two types:
1) hybrid sequences, where one type of sequence is crossed with another to improve
the cardinality and correlation properties and
2) matrix codes, 1-D sequences converted to 2-D codes or 2-D codes by construc-
tion, to reduce the ’time’ spread of the sequences/codes.
Prime-hop and eqc/prime W/
T hybrid codes have been proposed where one type
of sequence is crossed with another to improve the cardinality and correlation
properties. Other constructions deal with conversion of 1-D sequences to 2-D
codes either by using Chinese remainder theorem or folding GoLomb rulers. W/
T
single-pulse-per-row (W/
T SPR) codes are 2-D codes constructed using algebraic
method Addition Modulo Group operation.
Motivation for this work: To design a family of 2-D codes which have
the design choice of length of one dimension over the other, and also have better
cardinality, spectral efficiency and also low cross-correlation values (thereby have
low BER) than that of the reported unipolar 2-D codes.
In this thesis, we describe the design principles of W/
T MPR codes, for in-
coherent FO-CDMA networks, which have good cardinality, spectral efficiency
and minimal cross-correlation values. Another feature of the W/
T MPR codes is
that the aspect ratio can be varied by trade off between wavelength and temporal

▼ Competitive and high-risk environments require complex high technology systems, which need to be supported and maintained over their respective life cycles. These systems often have a significant consequence of failure, and require complex management systems to achieve their operational objectives. Significant leadership and management challenges exist, not only in South Africa, but also in other developing countries, where systems may be utilised beyond the lifespan they were designed for and are susceptible to obsolescence.
This study was conducted by following a structured process; the research consisted of three stages. The first stage dealt with the research problem, including the delimitations of the study. The second stage was further divided into three phases. The first phase deconstructed the appropriate literature, which included the interpretation of numerous definitions of logistics, integrated logistics support, and the integrated logistics support elements. In addition, the research was grounded in the fields of operations management, supply chain management and integrated logistics support. The second phase focused on the deconstruction of six case studies from four different high technology complex systems. From the analysis of the first two phases followed the third phase of research, which focused on the identification of areas requiring further research. Further research was conducted by means of a questionnaire, the results of which were analysed for variable dependency and variable association. The third stage of the research included the collation and analysis of the findings of the first two stages of research. The analysis utilised the principles of Mode 2 research and design science research, whereby an ILS framework and associated grounded technological rules have been recommended.
These recommendations are robust in nature, as they can be applied in the most challenging environment and circumstances as identified. Furthermore, by grounding the theory in the disciplines of operations management, supply chain management and integrated logistics support, the reliability, validity, relevance, and applicability of the study could be substantiated. This implied that the generated theoretical knowledge could be transferred to and applied in practice, and as such, an organisation can reap substantial value added benefits, and gain considerable competitive advantage in the market place by applying this developed ILS framework and associated ILS grounded technological rules.
