The purpose of this applied dissertation was to study and characterize the prevailing depressive symptomatology in a cluster of 105 children, from 6 to 10 years old, in a Public Health Institution of the northern region of Portugal. Through the analysis of data gathered from the use of several evaluative items, such as the Children Depression Inventory (CDI) and the Graffar rating scale, we were able to ascertain that 41% of the cited sample suffered from depressive symptomatology. In this clinical sample of 43 participants, there was noticeably a larger number of male individuals with the referred symptoms (45.7%), as opposed to female (31.4%). The severity of the symptoms was also proven to be highly prevalent amongst boys (62.2% with symptoms ranging from moderate to severe). Girls, however, showed clear expressions of lighter symptomatology (63.6%). Comparative analysis of the results from the Children Depression Inventory (CDI), regarding gender, age and education, showed no notable significance, even though we were able to denote some influence concerning the existence of siblings. We were also able to determine that male participants reveal symptoms associated with performance and loss of appetite, and that female participants seem to endure altercations in self-image and esteem.

▼ Objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) has been used to explain how mechanisms related to socialization, sexual objectification, and psychological variables interact to predict mental health difficulties. Among a sample of 626 undergraduate women (age 18-24), this study empirically tested components of Moradi and Huang’s (2008) model and extended it by including additional socialization experiences (i.e., sexual abuse, societal pressures regarding weight and body size). Structural equation modeling analyses suggested that the model provided a good fit to the data and the model was tested in the confirmatory sample. Across the two samples, high levels of Body Shame and low levels of Internal Bodily Awareness directly led and high levels of Societal Pressures Regarding Weight and Body Size, Internalization of Cultural Standards of Beauty, and Self-objectification indirectly led to increased Bulimic
Symptomatology and accounted for 65 to 73% of the variance in Bulimic
Symptomatology. A history of sexual abuse and sexual objectification were not consistently supported within the model and do not appear to be as salient as the experience of societal pressures regarding weight and body size in understanding women’s experience of bulimic
symptomatology. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

▼ Previous research has shown peer victimization during adolescence to have strong lasting effects on mental health. Religiousness and forgiveness are two factors that are positively related to mental health and the current study proposes that they may have a protective influence against the negative effects of peer victimization. Additionally, religiousness and forgiveness may be related in that forgiveness may be a link in the religiousness/health relationship. The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationships among religiousness, forgiveness and mental health in the context of peer victimization during adolescence. Mental health was measured by internalizing
symptomatology and emotion regulation. Analyses were conducted using Structural Equation Modeling. Results indicate that forgiveness may indeed be a link in the religiousness/health relationship but only when examining private religious practices. Results further show that religiousness may not be a strong protective factor in the context of peer victimization and that certain dimensions of forgiveness (specifically benevolence motivations) may actually exacerbate the effects of peer victimization on internalizing
symptomatology rather than act as a protective factor.

▼ Two competing sets of hypotheses about the relations of self-criticism and dependency to depressive
symptomatology were tested. Blatt's theory (1974, 2004) states that self-criticism and dependency are separate and distinct personality traits that predispose individuals to depression. Hypotheses from Blatt's theory were that self-criticism and dependency each explain unique variance in depressive
symptomatology beyond that explained by the other. In contrast, Greenberg and Watson (2006) theorize that dependency underlies self-criticism in predisposing individuals to depression. Hypotheses from Greenberg and Watson's theory were that self-criticism and dependency are both correlated with depressive
symptomatology, that self-criticism is correlated with dependency, that self-criticism explains unique variance in depressive
symptomatology beyond that explained by dependency, and that dependency becomes a nonsignificant predictor of depressive
symptomatology when controlling for self-criticism. A sample of 154 female and 142 male undergraduates completed the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire, which assesses self-criticism and dependency, and completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II 10 weeks later. Preliminary analyses indicated that the dependency construct should be measured with the Neediness subfactor of the DEQ Dependency measure and that there were no gender interactions in tests of the hypotheses. Results supported all of the hypotheses based on Greenberg and Watson's theory and did not support Blatt's hypothesis that dependency explains unique variance in depressive
symptomatology beyond that explained by self-criticism. Limitations of the present study and its implications for future research are discussed.

Background: Higher levels of parental stress has been associated with negative outcomes for families. Demographic factors, as well as prenatal mental and perinatal health may, to a certain extend, be the cause of high levels of parental stress.
Objective: To analyze the relative effect of sociodemographic factors, prenatal and postnatal mental health and perinatal health of mothers and fathers of 6 months old children on parental stress.
Method: A sample of 58 women and 32 men completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) and the Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 35 weeks of gestation. Immediately after childbirth perinatal health information was recorded from clinical reports and the Optimality index fulfilled. Repeated measure of the EPDS was obtained at two months after childbirth. Parental Stress Index (PSI) was also compleated at six months after…

Igualmente, o estilo…

▼ As rates of depression continue to increase, problems with mental health service underutilization and premature termination from psychotherapy remain unresolved. This has been most notable for ethnic minority groups in the United States—with Asian Americans showing the greatest mental health service use disparity for over a decade. Asian Americans’ use of mental health services, including psychotherapy, may be influenced by the type of depressive symptom experience. In particular, physical symptoms in Asian Americans' distress, such as pain, may differentiate: (a) the mental health services sought for relief, and (b) retention in psychotherapy. This dissertation is composed of two studies using different analytical approaches to examine the role of physical depressive
symptomatology in Asian Americans’ mental health service use behaviors. First, data from 890 National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS) participants were quantitatively analyzed to identify symptoms that characterize Asian Americans’ depressive experiences. Then, the relationship between symptom experience and various forms of mental health service utilization was examined. Since the symptom experience may not only influence services sought but also how a person interacts in a psychotherapy setting, the second study analyzed 36 patients’ archival data from an outpatient clinic to explore Asian American psychotherapy dropout. The relevance of physical depressive
symptomatology was included in this primarily qualitative examination. The first quantitative study revealed that some experiences fit well within established DSM-defined criteria for depression, while others are better characterized by physical symptoms found in culturally salient idioms of distress. After considering other known predictors of mental health service use, depressive experiences characterized by chronic physical symptoms predicted specific forms of mental health service use (alternative care/self-help and psychological counseling/therapy). The second qualitative mixed-method study gave rise to themes related to psychotherapy dropout and demonstrated that most patients described physical symptoms as part of their depressive distress. However, the clinician-documented physical symptom emphasis did not relate to an early drop from or longer stay in outpatient psychotherapy. Overall, results from this dissertation indicated a presence of heterogeneity in Asian Americans’ depressive experiences, with physical symptoms being an important part of the experience for some Asian Americans. Structural barriers influenced both the utilization of mental health services and retention in psychotherapy, after accounting for the symptom experience. Implications for clinical services and future research are discussed.

▼ Post-menarche patients with clinical signs of vulvovaginitis were analyzed in this study, whose aims were the following: identify the frequency of C. albicans and non C. albicans species and negative results, correlate the vaginal culture for yeast with risk factors and
symptomatology; compare positive and negative results for yeast in the vaginal and anal cultures; compare the positive results for C. albicans with other results found in the vaginal and anal cultures; and compare concomitant positivity for C. albicans and non C. albicans in the vaginal and anal cultures. Sample selection occurred between May, 2003 and May, 2005, and included 99 patients from Natal, Brazil. The laboratory methods used consisted of CHROMagar Candida culture medium, thermotolerance test at 42-45°C and hypertonic NaCL, in addition to the classic methods of carbohydrate assimilation and fermentation. We used absolute numbers, percentages, means of central tendency, chi-squared test (χ2) with Yates correction, Fisher s exact test and odds ratio for statistical analysis. The most frequent species was C. albicans in 69% of the cases. The positivity for Candida spp showed an association with the use of tight-fitting intimate clothing and/or synthetics, allergic diseases and the occurrence of itching, leukorrhea and erythema. Anal colonization increased the likelihood of vaginal contamination by 2.8 and 4.9 times, respectively, for Candida spp and C. albicans. When compared to the other species, C. albicans-positive anal colonization increased by 3.7 times the likelihood of vaginal positivity. These data suggest likely vaginal contamination originating in the anus

▼ Background: In Japan, 13% of new mothers suffer from elevated postpartum depressive
symptomatology (PPDS), and one-third of women have posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms following birth. Researchers reported that women with elevated PPDS often had more PTS symptoms and perceived low social support in the postpartum period. However, the role of social support in the relationship between PTS and PPDS has not been examined. Understanding how social support affects the relationship between PTS and PPDS is necessary to develop effective interventions to prevent elevated PPDS.
Purpose: To examine the role of social support in the relationship between PTS and PPDS among Japanese women.
Design and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional secondary data analysis. Based on the Stress Process Model, two conceptual models (moderation and mediation), consisting of four study concepts (PPDS, PTS, social support, and maternal background factors) were examined. PPDS was measured with the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale-Short Form. PTS was measured with two items of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Social support (by a partner/others except a partner) was measured with an adaptation of the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey. The study sample consisted of 207 Japanese women between one and three months after birth. Both multiple linear regressions and path analyses were used to examine the proposed models.
Results: In this study, it was inferred that posttraumatic stress (PTS) following birth had a significant direct effect on postpartum depressive
symptomatology (PPDS); that both partner and others’ support had similar direct effects on PPDS; and that primiparous women, those who engaged in less health promotion behaviors, and those with more physical health problems had more PPDS. On the other hand, neither the moderating effects of social support on the relationship between PTS and PPDS nor the mediating effect of PTS on the relationship between social support and PPDS was supported in this study.
Conclusions: Mental health care focusing on PTS following birth will contribute to preventing depressive symptoms. From the current study results, alternative moderation and mediation models that include coping or self-concepts are suggested for future study.

▼ Exercise has been used successfully as a treatment for anxiety and depression. It has been found to have acute and long-term anxiolytic effects and to improve mood in people of various ages, both sexes, and diverse types of settings (e.g., clinical, college, etc.). The evidence for exercise as a treatment for OCD is less well substantiated, with only 3 known small-scale studies addressing it. While preliminary evidence suggests that aerobic exercise leads to reduced symptoms of OCD in subjects, it has not addressed people with subthreshold OC symptoms, effects of anaerobic exercise on OC symptoms or how certain subtypes of OC symptom respond to exercise. In present study university students completed self-report questionnaires in order to address these issues. Higher levels of exercise were correlated with increased levels of positive feeling and higher levels of pathological exercising. However, no correlation between exercise and depression was found. Correlations between exercise and OC scores were few, but the ones present were in the opposite direction from what was predicted, and exercise correlated positively more frequently with certain subtypes of OCD than others.

▼ The primary purpose of the investigation was to examine differences in symptom-expression between Caucasians and Asians in response to college-stress. College-stress was defined as adjustment problems that students experience as a function of exposure to a college environment. The propensity of each group to express symptoms in response to stress in somatic (i.e., bodily) versus psychological (i.e., anxiety and depression) modes was investigated. Previous reports have postulated a somatization hypothesis for Asians, as opposed to a psychologization tendency in Caucasians. Intra-Asian differences with respect to symptom-expression were also examined. Data were collected electronically. 115 graduate students participated in the study. Using Fisher's transformations to compare correlations, it was found that neither the somatization nor the psychologization hypotheses were supported. However, within Asians depression demonstrated a stronger association with stress than somatic symptoms.
A subsidiary purpose of this investigation was to determine whether attribution-style was an aspect of culture that could lead to differences in symptom-expression. It was hypothesized that Asians would have a more external attribution-style, while Caucasian-Americans would have a more internal style. External style was hypothesized to be related to a somatic tendency, while internal style was hypothesized to be related to a psychological tendency. None of these hypotheses were supported. Finally, some exploratory analyses were carried out to assess the effect of demographic variables on symptom-expression. Sex was related to anxiety symptoms, while level of education was related to somatic symptom-reports. Overall, these findings highlight the need for cross-cultural research in psychology to adopt a more systemic approach in studying variables, as opposed to using merely country/culture as an independent variable.

▼ The purpose of the current study was to further explore the relations between parent trauma, parenting behavior, child trauma, and child adjustment. The sample included 358 children (191 boys and 167 girls) and their primary caregiver (48 fathers and 310 mothers). The childrenâ s ages ranged from 10 to 17 with an average age of 13. Parent trauma was not found to be related to child trauma through parenting behaviors. Child trauma was found to mediate the relations between parenting and child adjustment. There was some evidence of parenting mediating the relation between parent trauma and child adjustment. This research underscores the importance of understanding the risk and protective factors associated with parent trauma and its influences on child trauma and adjustment as well as the importance of good parenting as a protective factor. Further, this study supports past research which highlights those pathways which lead to resilience.

▼ Cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia is considered a core feature of the disease. The aims of the current study are: a) The comparison of schizophrenia spectrum patients and healthy controls’ assessment of different cognitive functions, b) Revealing possible associations between specialized cognitive functions and psychotic symptoms, c) Revealing possible associations between specialized cognitive functions and the Diagnostic Interview for Psychoses (DIP) sub-scales patients’ scores, and d) Revealing possible associations between patients’ general cognitive dysfunction and the Diagnostic Interview for Psychoses (DIP) sub-scales patients’ scores. Cognitive functioning was assessed using the Cogtest Console cognitive functioning computerized test battery. According to the results of the current study, healthy controls outperformed patients in all cognitive tests, with the differences between performances being statistically significant. Furthermore, results indicated that the “Behaviour and Affect” sub-scale score was negatively associated with executive functions, working memory, and psychomotor ability. The “Speech” sub-scale score was also negatively associated with executive functions. Moreover, results indicated that the “Delusions” sub-scale score was positively associated with executive functions, declarative memory, sustained attention, and psychomotor ability. Results did not indicate any statistically significant association between the DIP sub-scales scores and patients’ general cognitive dysfunction. Findings of the current study support the hypothesis of heterogeneity of the cognitive dysfunction and the symptomatology of schizophrenia.

▼ Adolescence is a period of social, physical, and neurobiological transitions that may leave individuals more vulnerable to the development of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, aggression, and delinquency. Self-regulation affects these outcomes in adolescence; however, individuals demonstrate growth in self-regulation abilities at different rates. Thus, the current study sought to examine how differences in self-regulation (specifically, executive functioning (EF)) development over time may contribute to different behavioral and emotional symptoms in adolescence. Data were collected from 167 adolescents and their primary caregiver over approximately three years. At each time point, adolescents completed three behavioral tasks that capture EF, and both adolescents and their primary caregiver completed measures of adolescent symptoms. Results showed that there were no significant associations between initial levels of EF and symptoms, or between growth in EF and growth in symptoms. Furthermore, different aspects of EF (such as memory, attention, and inhibitory control) did not differentially predict
symptomatology. However, additional analyses revealed that increases in growth of EF over time predicted lower symptoms of aggression and delinquency at Time 3. Findings suggest that those with more rapid EF development may be better able to regulate behavioral and emotional states and thus be less likely to develop these types of symptoms, and that both early levels and growth in EF may be important predictors of adolescent outcomes.

▼ This thesis explores the symptomatology of fatigue based on interviews conducted with seven people who are diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. The thesis starts by examining how a biomedical view of fatigue — the dominant perspective in contemporary Western society — is underpinned by aporetic divisions, such as mind/body and individual/society. In pursuit of a more rigorous approach to fatigue, which explores rather than disavows division, the interview transcripts are analysed through the lens of Lacanian theory. The analysis commences with an exploration of the onset of the participants' conditions, drawing on Lacan's notion of alienation. This brings to light a common experience of a confrontation with the capitalistic demand to ‘keep going', as well as experience of facing contradictory demands. Lacan's notion of separation allows us to appreciate the emergence of fatigue as one way of unconsciously refusing these demands. This refusal consists of two intertwined but contradictory forces: the drive (which articulates to pain/tension and signals presence) and a defensive desire (which articulates to fatigue itself and signals disappearance). This allows us to understand a complex of phenomena related to the experience of fatigue, ranging from anorexia to mourning. The thesis then turns to the relation between the onset events and the participants' responses to them. Here Lacan's theory of the clinical structures is utilised in order to illuminate details around the function and structure of fatigue. This returns us to the conventional separation of the mind and body, showing how current medical and psychological approaches are unable to adequately account for the current findings. The thesis concludes by elucidating how the main points are situated within a larger sociocultural context, arguing for a view of the mind-body relation which moves beyond the aporia while refusing any reduction to either pole.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of a
community project in neuro-musculoskeletal symptomatology of household women.
Methods: A controlled trial, a “Community Intervention”, included 30
household women (20 in the experimental group and 10 in the control group)
randomly selected. It was used the Risk Assessment Questionnaire, the Rating of
Perceived Exertion of Borg Scale and the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. The
project was constituted by a health education session and a specific exercises
programme.
Results: The implementation of the project decreased significantly (p <0.05)
the neuro-musculoskeletal symptomatology, the rating of perceived exertion and the
average intensity of pain reported during household activities. Household women
have improved significantly (p <0.05) their knowledge about risk factors and changed
significantly (p <0.05) their behaviors, adopting more suitable postures.
Conclusions: The household work promotes the occurrence of neuromusculoskeletal
symptomatology and the implementation of a health education
session and a specific exercises programme have become effective in health
promotion.

Post-menarche patients with clinical signs of vulvovaginitis were analyzed in this study, whose aims were the following: identify the frequency of C. albicans and non C. albicans species and negative results, correlate the vaginal culture for yeast with risk factors and symptomatology; compare positive and negative results for yeast in the vaginal and anal cultures; compare the positive results for C. albicans with other results found in the vaginal and anal cultures; and compare concomitant positivity for C. albicans and non C. albicans in the vaginal and anal cultures. Sample selection occurred between May, 2003 and May, 2005, and included 99 patients from Natal, Brazil. The laboratory methods used consisted of CHROMagar Candida culture medium, thermotolerance test at 42-45C and hypertonic NaCL, in addition to the classic methods of carbohydrate assimilation and fermentation. We used absolute numbers, percentages, means of central tendency, chi-squared test (χ2) with Yates correction, Fishers exact test and odds ratio for statistical analysis. The most frequent species was C. albicans in 69% of the cases. The positivity for Candida spp showed an association with the use of tight-fitting intimate clothing and/or synthetics, allergic diseases and the occurrence of itching, leukorrhea and…

A presente
The present study aims to examine the relation between adult attachment and the
psychopathological symptomatology in intimate partner violence, comparing with a
normative sample. This paper aims to contribute to the existing knowledge of these victims in
the Portuguese context, allowing to perform a more comprehensive violence risk assessment
and consequently the risk management, as well as to adjust the interventions to the necessities
of each victim. The data of the victims was collected in the Gabinete de Informação e
Atendimento à Vítima of the Departamento de Investigação e Ação de Penal in Lisbon and in
the 7ª Esquadra de Investigação Criminal da Polícia de Segurança Pública. The normative
data was collected with a convenience sample. The present investigation was accomplished

▼ This longitudinal study examined the contribution of expressive versus instrumental activity restriction (AR) to indicators of well-being among caregivers. Competing factor structures of the Activity Restriction Scale (ARS; Williamson &
Schulz, 1992) were tested, compared, and cross-validated to explore whether the items of the ARS formed the two distinct categories of expressive and instrumental activities. A series of studies explored: (1) the cross-sectional associations between AR
and well-being; (2) the ability of AR to predict change in well-being; (3) the bidirectional and reciprocal relations between AR and well-being over time; and (4) the relation between change in AR and change in well-being over time. At Time 1, AR was
associated with increased depression, anxiety, and physical symptomatology, and decreased social support and perceived health status. Neither expressive nor instrumental AR contributed to indicators of well-being over time. Rather, the findings suggested
that these indicators of well-being may be stronger predictors of AR.

Introduction: Alexithymia has been reported more significantly in subjects with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), since they have a hard time recognizing and describing their own emotions. It should also be noted that many individuals with OCD often report experiencing traumatic situations. However, there are no national studies on the relationship between OCD, traumatic experiences and alexithymia, justifying the relevance of this study. Aim: The following were outlined: 1) To study the relationship between psychopathological symptoms, alexithymia and traumatic experiences in a clinical and non-clinical sample; 2) To study and…

▼ Emerging adulthood is a complex, multifaceted, unique and systems-oriented developmental period whereby individuals encounter a wide range of factors, each of which influence their subsequent adulthood outcomes (i.e., adaptive and maladaptive pathways). Given the importance of studying psychological adjustment and different types of loneliness in emerging adulthood, the purpose of the present study was to assess depressive
symptomatology and family, social, and romantic loneliness in emerging adulthood. Specifically, the present study examined the impact of PARTheory (i.e., early relationship context), current attachment experiences in close relationships (i.e., current relationship context) and sense of mattering to family and friends (sense of awareness, sense of importance, and sense of reliance) on emerging adults' overall reports of family, social, and romantic loneliness and depressive
symptomatology. In addition, this study explored whether coping styles (i.e., behavioral and cognitive context) and psychological adjustment (i.e., personality context) mediated the role between early family and current attachment relationship experiences and the emerging adults' reports of family, social, and romantic loneliness.
Emerging adults (N = 440) from Wayne State University were assessed using the Adult Parental Acceptance Rejection Questionnaire, Short Form (PARQ), Experiences in Close Relationships Scale Revised (ECR-R), Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults - Short Form (SELSA-S), Interpersonal Mattering Scale (IMS), Adult Personality Assessment Questionnaire (PAQ), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D Scale), and Brief Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Scale (Brief-COPE), along with several demographic variables (e.g., age, gender, grade level, employment status, marital status, social networking rating, group involvement rating, etc.).
Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that family loneliness was best predicted by total father acceptance and rejection, sense of awareness to family, sense of importance to family, psychological adjustment, and use of behavioral disengagement. Social loneliness was best predicted by sense of awareness to friends, sense of importance to friends, psychological adjustment, use of instrumental support, and use of behavioral disengagement. Romantic loneliness was found to be influenced by attachment security, psychological adjustment, and use of emotional support. Depressive
symptomatology was best predicted by gender, total father acceptance and rejection, attachment security, sense of awareness to family, psychological adjustment, and use of self-blame. In addition, results from the mediation analyses indicated that psychological adjustment mediated the relation between maternal acceptance and social loneliness, whereas psychological adjustment mediated the relation between paternal acceptance and social loneliness and between paternal acceptance and family loneliness. Use of instrumental support…

▼ Evidências empíricas têm mostrado que doentes oncológicos submetidos a diversos
tratamentos apresentam alterações ao nível do funcionamento cognitivo (e.g. atenção,
(RAVLT), Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS)) e
executivo, particularmente a flexibilidade cognitiva.
Empirical evidences have shown that cancer patients, submitted to several
treatments, present changes in cognitive functioning level (e. g. attention, memory,
executive functions). However, it was observed that these changes could be noticed even
before the beginning of any treatment. Thus, some studies make aware of the need to
consider other psychological variables that might influence the cognitive functioning of
the patients. The traumatic symptomatology is one of the variables to be considered, since
oncological disease can be a sufficiently traumatic event. The present study, with a
transversal and exploratory character, had the aim of understand how the traumatic
symptomatology, in woman with breast cancer, is related to losses in their cognitive
functioning. The sample was composed of 20 women, diagnosed with breast cancer,

Shigellosis is a disease manifested from mild diarrhea to severe ysentery. The ability to invade cells, cause injury and imbalance in the homeostasis to the intestinal mucosa and modulate the inflammatory response has been attributed to several factors of pathogenicity of Shigella spp. In this study, thirty-six isolates of Shigella were identified from an etiologic study of childhood diarrhea in 1,500 children aged 0-10 years who were admitted to hospitals in Manaus (East-South-and-West Zones) between
August 2007 and July 2009. Shigella flexneri was the most common (65%), followed by Shigella sonnei (20%), Shigella boydii (12.5%) and Shigella dysenteriae (2.5%). Among the isolates, one isolate (intermediate) resistant to ciprofloxacin and 1 (intermediate) to ceftriaxone, which are antibiotics recommended by WHO. Molecular
typing of the pathogenicity factors showed evidence of the pathogenic potential of shet- 1B subunit of Shigella and can lead to complications related to dehydration. Frequencies of the IpaBCD (the most prevalent factors among isolates) followed by IpaH suspect associations to fever and bowel injury. The IpaH was clearly associated to bloody diarrhea. And finally, differences in the frequencies of Shet-2 positives between
febrile-based groups reinforce its role in the inflammatory response. This…

▼ Media exposure is often cited as a causal factor in the development of body dissatisfaction, or negative thoughts and feelings toward the body (Grogan, 2017; Thompson, Heinberg, Atlabe, & Tantleff-Dunn, 1999). While eating disorders most commonly emerge during late adolescence (18-21 years), risk factors that predict the later onset of eating disorders emerge much earlier and escalate during adolescence (13-16 years; Hudson, Hiripi, Pope, & Kessler, 2007; Rhode, Stice, & Marti, 2016). Overall, links between exposure to traditional forms of mainstream media (e.g. television and magazines), body dissatisfaction, and eating disorder symptomatology are well- established in the literature, with robust findings based on correlational, longitudinal, and experimental research (e.g. Grabe, Ward, & Hyde, 2008; Hargreaves & Tiggemann, 2003; Harrison & Heffner, 2006). However, social media (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) now dominate the media diets of adolescents, and differ from traditional media in ways that may exacerbate the association between media exposure and body-related outcomes. Previous research suggests that social comparison and self-objectification may represent two psychological mechanisms by which media exposure can impact body dissatisfaction (Festinger, 1954; Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). The first study was a between-subjects experimental protocol completed by ninth grade students (N = 147; 75 boys, 69 girls, 3 did not report gender; Mage = 14.54, SDage = .57) and a comparison sample of college students (N = 581; 144 men, 448 women, 9 did not report gender; Mage = 19.39, SDage = 1.72) designed to examine the impact of social comparison and self-objectification on body dissatisfaction. Participants completed either a control task or an experimental manipulation that prompted either self-objectification or both self- objectification and social comparison. Results of this study indicated partial support for hypotheses, specifically that adolescents are particularly sensitive to social comparison processes compared to college students. The second study explored the impact of social media use on body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology among the same sample of adolescents. This study also explored the role of individual difference characteristics (i.e. self-perceived gender typicality and self-monitoring) in the relationship between social media use and body-related outcomes (Egan & Perry, 2001; Leaper & Brown, 2008; Snyder, 1986; Graziano, Leone, Musser, & Lautenschlager, 1987). Results indicated that higher emotional investment in technology predicted higher eating disorder symptomatology among girls, especially for girls who felt less typical for their gender than their peers. Results also indicated that higher self-monitoring, or greater sensitivity to the opinions of peers, was associated with higher body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptomatology among both girls and boys. Taken together, the results of these studies suggest that emotional investment in experiences online may…

Neslaganje vodećih autora po pitanju optimalne
strukture post-traumatske simptomatologije i brojni neusaglašeni
empirijski nalazi aktuelno rezultiraju u različitim
konceptualizacijama post-traumatskog stresnog poremećaja (PTSP) u
dijagnostičkim sistemima DSM 5 i ICD 11. U ovom istraživanju
proveravana je struktura post-traumatske simptomatologije, kao i
njena faktorska stabilnost, nezavisno od upotrebljene metode
procene. Testirali smo najčešće navođene modele strukture:
trofaktorski i dva četvorofaktorska modela, kao i neke njihove
modifikacije. Kroz niz konfirmatornih faktorskih analiza
procenu post-traumatske simptomatologije (CAPS, IES R, SCL90Rptsd).
ratne torture (N=324). Važan aspekt ove provere podesnosti modela
je kontrola efekata metoda procene u proceduri konfirmatorne
analize multi-crta-multi-metod matrice (MTMM).
i ajtemima poremećaja spavanja izdvojenim u poseban peti faktor
pokazao istim ili boljim kroz sva tri pojedinačna instrumenta.
Testiranje modela strukture post-traumatske simptomatologije kroz
ukupne podatke sa sva tri instrumenta daje drugačije rezultate:
trofaktorski DSM IV model dao je poželjne indekse podesnosti, bolje
od četvorofaktorskih modela Zaravnjenosti i Disforije.
Petofaktorski model Poremećaja spavanja i kroz ovu analizu pokazao
više pažnje u dijagnostici PTSP i imaju potvrđen značaj u nastanku
i održavanju PTSP kao i u njegovom tretmanu. Analiza MTMM matrice

▼ Pediatric cancer is a life-altering disease which can profoundly impact the psychological functioning of the children it affects. However, pediatric cancer not only affects the ill-child but the entire family system. Research examining the psychological functioning and adjustment of parents of pediatric cancer patients has been widely disseminated; however, studies assessing the emotional and behavioral functioning of the non-ill siblings have only recently started to appear. Research that has been conducted in this area suggests that oncology siblings can exhibit some emotional and behavioral difficulties in response to the ill-child’s diagnosis and resultant changes in family dynamics. Additionally, despite preliminary research suggesting that children with different types of cancer (i.e., tumors versus leukemia) have different emotional and behavioral outcomes, not enough is known to guide treatment guidelines as programs for these children and their families begin to be developed. This project used standardized clinical measures to evaluate the psychological functioning of 35 healthy siblings of oncology patients recruited from a pediatric hospital. Additionally, we examined other factors that may affect sibling functioning, including psychological functioning of the parent and ill-child, and perceptions of broader family functioning. This study recruited 20 families from an outpatient clinic to act as a primary care comparison group. Results suggest that overall, patients, mothers, and siblings are doing well at the individual level. However, siblings are endorsing more difficulties in the family unit and more psychological problems than reported by their mothers. The results of this study further highlight the importance of assessing the psychological functioning of the whole family unit when working with a child diagnosed with cancer. Finally, the current study design provides a framework for future studies investigating the complex set of factors that may affect functioning of individual family members. ( en )

▼ Sclerotium rolfsii is a soil-borne fungus that causes southern blight to a wide range of plants in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. This study aimed to characterize the phenotypic and pathogenic diversity among isolates collected from the southern United States. Eighty-four isolates collected from Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas were paired and assigned to twenty-three mycelial compatibility groups (MCGs), of which 11 MCGs consisted of a single isolate. Isolates within a MCG typically originated from different hosts and different geographical areas with the exception of MCG 11. Fourteen out of 16 isolates in MCG 11 originated from peanuts in Georgia, while the other two isolates originated from snap bean and potato in Virginia. Significant differences in the size and number of sclerotia produced in vitro existed between isolates from peanut and other hosts. Nineteen isolates representative of the most common MCGs were tested for pathogenicity on tomato, pepper, and peanut plants. All isolates were pathogenic to all hosts, but virulence differed significantly among isolates. Isolates originally collected from peanut were the most virulent on all tested plants compared to isolates collected from tomato and pepper. The peanut cultivar Georgia Green was more susceptible to peanut isolates from Georgia than to other isolates collected from other hosts or other geographical regions. Of the two tomato entries, the commercial tomato cv. Tygress exhibited more tolerance than the previously reported resistant breeding line 5635M to many of the S. rolfsii isolates tested, with the exception of the peanut isolates collected from Georgia.
