L’Arctique s’est réchauffé rapidement et il y a urgence d’anticiper les effets que cela pourrait avoir sur les protistes à la base de la chaîne alimentaire. Le phytoplancton de l’Océan Arctique inclut les pico- et nano-eucaryotes (0.45-10 μm diamètre de la cellule) et plusieurs de ceux-ci sont des écotypes retrouvés seulement dans l’Arctique alors que d’autres sont introduits des océans plus méridionaux. Alors que les océans tempérés pénètrent dans l’Arctique, il devient pertinent de savoir si ces communautés microbiennes pourraient être modifiées. L’archipel du Svalbard est une région idéale pour observer la biogéographie des communautés microbiennes sous l’influence de processus polaires et tempérés. Bien qu’ils soient géographiquement proches, les régions côtières entourant le Svalbard sont sujettes à des intrusions alternantes de masses d’eau de l’Arctique et de l’Atlantique en plus des conditions locales. Huit sites ont été échantillonnés en juillet 2013 pour identifier les protistes selon un gradient de profondeur et de masses d’eau autour de l’archipel. En plus des variables océanographiques standards, l’eau a été échantillonnée pour synthétiser des banques d’amplicons ciblant le 18S SSU ARNr et son gène pour ensuite être séquencées à haut débit. Cinq des sites d’étude avaient de faibles concentrations de chlorophylle avec des compositions de communauté post-efflorescence dominée par les dinoflagellés, ciliés, des alvéolés parasites putatifs, chlorophycées et prymnesiophytées. L’intrusion des masses d’eau et les conditions environnementales locales étaient corrélées avec la structure des communautés ; l’origine de la masse d’eau contribuant le plus à la distance phylogénétique des communautés microbiennes. Au sein de trois fjords, de fortes concentrations de chlorophylle sous-entendaient des activités d’efflorescence. Un fjord était dominé par Phaeocystis, un deuxième par un clade arctique identifié comme un Pelagophyceae et un troisième par un assemblage mixte. En général, un signal fort d’écotypes liés à l’Arctique prédominait autour du Svalbard.

The Arctic is warming rapidly and there is an urgent need to anticipate the effect this will have on the microbial eukaryotes at the base of the food chain. Arctic Ocean phytoplankton include pico- and nano-eukaryotes (0.45-10 μm cell size), many of these are unique ecotypes found only in the Arctic, but others are advected in from lower latitude oceans. As temperate oceans waters penetrate further into the Arctic, knowledge of whether microbial communities could be displaced is needed. Svalbard is an ideal region to address questions on microbial communities under the influence of polar and temperate processes. ▼ Glacier surges are amongst the most dynamic of glaciological phenomena, but their controlling mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Surging glaciers are characterised by cyclical flow instabilities and the rapid transfer of ice to the ablation area, typically resulting in significant mass loss. The High-Arctic archipelago of Svalbard is one of several regions in the northern hemisphere which contain a high-density of surge-type glaciers, variously estimated to be between 13-90% of the total glacier population across the islands. Developing a better understanding of which of these figures, if either, is most realistic is important in the context of glacier dynamics and related contributions of small glaciers and ice caps to sea level change in the immediate future. This study presents detailed assessments of the margins of several known surge-type glaciers in Svalbard in order to update and improve the existing framework by which they are identified, and to provide a foundation for future reassessments of the surge-type glacier population based on distinct ice-sediment-landform assemblages. A range of techniques is utilised, including geomorphological and structural glaciological mapping, sedimentological analysis, basal ice descriptions, and stable isotope analysis. This work provides further insight into diagnostic indicators of surge behaviour preserved in basal ice sequences; provides links between surge dynamics and basal ice sequences, the glaciological structure and the landform record; and investigates the structural and tectonic development of surge-type glaciers. Based on this, surge landsystems are proposed for: (1) small valley glaciers, (2) large land-terminating glaciers, and (3) large tidewater glaciers. It is suggested that these three landsystems, with some variability, broadly characterise the geomorphology of the vast majority of known Svalbard surge-type glaciers and, in conjunction with structural glaciological and basal ice investigations where relevant, may allow previously unknown surge-type glaciers to be identified in the field, from aerial photographs, and on sea floor imagery. This work adds to the existing repertoire of modern analogues and the breadth of surging glacier landsystems, and provides a holistic basis for assessing possible palaeo-surge behaviour within the Quaternary record.

▼ Marine sediments contain more microorganisms than all of the world’s oceans, with current of estimates of 1×1029 microorganisms. Despite marine sediments being replete with microbial cells, the majority of these microorganisms remain uncultured in the laboratory. At present, it is estimated that over 99% of all microorganisms have evaded culture, although truer estimates likely depend upon environment. Factors responsible for the intractability of these microorganisms include very slow doubling times, predicted to be on the orders of years to centuries, as well as special physiological needs of extremophiles. Unsuccessful laboratory growth of these microorganisms requires us to rely on culture-independent tools, including molecular techniques, metagenomics, and bioinformatic tools to glean insight into their ecological structure and function.This dissertation combines molecular and bioinformatic techniques to evaluate the biosphere within deeply buried sediments of the Baltic Sea and shallow sediments in Arctic fjords. Quantification of microbial biomass within marine sediments lays the groundwork for questions related to organic carbon and element cycling. Although essential, reliable and reproducible estimates of microbial biomass within deeply buried sediments has proved challenging. Here we present an interlaboratory comparison of quantification results from International Ocean Discovery Program Exp. 347 sediments that allowed us to define best practices that lead to meaningful quantification estimates. We then transferred these best practices to marine sediments in a Svalbard fjord (Van Keulenfjorden) to understand how glacial proximity influences microbial communities. Through 16S rRNA gene libraries, organic geochemistry, and genome reconstruction, we illustrate that cross-fjord trends in organic matter influence community structure in the sediment. In addition, we argue that biological iron and sulfur cycling facilitates rapid recycling of electron acceptors crucial for carbon oxidation. We delved deeper into their metabolic pathways with metagenomic sequencing and contig binning. We reconstructed several genomes of the Woeseiaceae clade that can act both as a sink and a source of carbon. Ultimately, our work provides a framework for understanding how glacial proximity influences microbial community composition and metabolic function, which is important and timely with ongoing climate change and a strong threat of severe glacial retreat in this region.

In this project, we analyse the ability of two regional climate models to simulate meteorological conditions on Nordenskiöldbreen, a glacier in Svalbard. To do so, regional climate model output is compared with in situ measurements from an automatic weather station. Detailed information about the weather conditions on Nordenskiöldbreen is important for simulating the glacial mass balance in a changing climate. The parameters analysed were the following: temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, precipitation, cloud cover, wind speed and wind direction. The weather station did not measure all parameters, cloud cover was instead estimated through the incoming longwave radiation and temperature, while precipitation was calculated from snow depth. The results show that the models represent certain parameters better than others. Temperature, air pressure and wind speed and direction are found to be simulated with high precision. Poorest agreement is found for precipitation, which appears to be both difficult to simulate and observe. Relative humidity and cloud cover show average agreement with the station. The conclusion of the project is that the estimation of some of the parameters is satisfactory, while others are lacking. None of the models can be determined to have performed significantly better than the other.

I det här projektet analyserades två regionala klimatmodellers förmåga att simulera meteorologiska förhållanden på Nordenskiöldbreen, en glaciär på Svalbard. Detta gjordes genom jämförelser av data från regionala klimatmodeller mot lokala mätningar från en automatisk väderstation. Detaljerad information om väderförhållandena på Nordenskiöldbreen är viktigt för att kunna simulera glaciärens massbalans i ett föränderligt klimat. Parametrarna som jämfördes var temperatur, lufttryck, relativ luftfuktighet, nederbörd, molntäcke samt vindhastighet och vindriktning. Stationen mätte inte alla parametrar, molntäcket uppskattades istället genom inkommande långvågig strålning och temperatur, medan nederbörd beräknades via snödjup. Resultatet visar att modellerna representerar vissa parametrar bättre än andra. Temperatur, lufttryck, vindhastighet och vindriktning simuleras med hög precision. Parametern med lägst samband är nederbörd, somverkar vara svår både att simulera och observera. Relativ luftfuktighet och molntäcke har ett medelmåttigt samband till stationen. Slutsatsen av projektet är att modellernas uppskattning av några parametrar är tillräckligt bra, medan andra är bristfälliga. Ingen av modellerna kan bedömas ha presterat signifikant bättre än den andra.

A firn aquifer is a type of englacial water storage that forms when surface meltwater fills up the pore space in porous firn. If the retention time exceeds one year the feature is regarded as perennial. The melt and accumulation rates as well as the available pore space determine the formation and extent of the firn aquifer. Flow of water within the aquifer caused by gradients in hydraulic potential leads to redistribution of water and consequently to a change in the level of the water table. This thesis focuses on a perennial firn aquifer on the Lomonosovfonna ice field on Svalbard. Spatial and temporal variations in the depth to the water table as well as variations in reflectivity strength of the water table are analysed using data from ground penetrating radar surveys along with MATLAB and ArcGIS software tools. The results show a clear connection between surface topography, steepness of its slopes and depth to the water table. It is also proved that the depth varies between different years. During the four years of study, the water table in the area rose closer to the surface. The results also show that the reflections from the top of the water table are stronger and more frequently detected in areas with gentler water table slopes. A similar correlation is true for the surface topography slope, where a gentler slope shows a stronger reflectivity. The results support the previous research done on Holtedahlfonna’s aquifer on Svalbard as well as aquifers on Greenland.

En firnakvifer är en typ av englacial vattenlagring som formas när smältvatten från en glaciärs yta fyller upp porutrymmen i porös firn. När retentionstiden överskrider ett år betraktas akviferen som flerårig. Smält- och ackumulationshastigheten samt det tillgängliga porutrymmet avgör bildningen och utsträckningen av akviferen. Vattenflödet i akviferen orsakad av gradienter i hydraulisk potential leder till omfördelning av vattnet och därmed till förändringar i vattenytans nivå. Denna uppsats fokuserar på en akvifer på isfältet Lomonosovfonna på Svalbard. De rumsliga och tidsmässiga variationerna i djupet till vattenytan samt de rumsliga variationerna i reflektivitetsstyrkan från vattenytan analyseras med hjälp av georadarmätningar samt MATLAB- och ArcGIS-mjukvaror. Resultaten visar ett tydligt samband mellan yttopografin, dess lutning samt djupet till vattenytan. Dessutom är det bevisat att djupet varierar mellan olika år. Under den fyra år långa undersökningssperioden har vattenytan i mätområdet stigit. Vidare visar resultaten att reflektioner från vattenytan är starkare och mer frekvent observerade i områden där vattenytans lutning är svag. En liknande korrelation gäller också för yttopografin, där svagare lutning ger upphov till en starkare reflektivitet. Resultaten stödjer den tidigare forskningen gjord både på akviferen på Holtedahlfonna på Svalbard och akviferer på Grönland.

▼ Alluvial fans are ubiquitous landforms in high-relief regions on Earth and Mars. They have a semi-conical shape and are located at the transition between highlands and adjacent basins. Alluvial fans can form by a range of processes including debris flows, which are water-laden masses of soil and rock with volumetric sediment concentrations exceeding 40%. In this thesis, I aim to (1) unravel the formative dynamics of debris-flow fans and, building on these insights, to (2) reconstruct hydrologic and climatic conditions in the last few millions of years on Mars from alluvial fan deposits (gullies). The dynamics of debris flows and debris-flow fans were studied in small-scale laboratory experiments. Debris-flow runout, and thus its hazardous effect, increases with channel and alluvial fan slope and with debris-flow volume and water fraction. There is an optimum relation between debris-flow runout and coarse-material fraction and clay fraction in the flow. Debris-flow fans were observed to form by autogenic sequences of backfilling, avulsion (i.e., channel shift) and channelization. These sequences are governed by large-scale topographic compensation. Gullies are catchment-alluvial fan systems found on crater walls on Mars. They are among the youngest landforms that may have formed by liquid water on Mars (they can be younger than 1 Ma), and therefore of critical importance in resolving the planet's recent hydrologic and climatic history. The formation of alluvial fans by cyclic sequences of backfilling, avulsion and channelization implies that fans comprise active and inactive sectors. Long inactive parts of alluvial fans are exposed to modification by secondary, post-depositional, processes, including weathering, wind erosion and fluvial erosion. Long-inactive fan surfaces are therefore likely to be masked by a surface morphology related to secondary processes. The effectiveness of post-depositional modification depends on the ratio between the characteristic time scales to build morphology by primary deposition and to modify morphology by secondary processes. On Mars the time scales of fan inactivity are large (~0.1-1 Myr), and therefore the surface morphology and texture of gully-fans is generally strongly modified, which hampers interpreting formative processes from surface morphology. Many Martian gullies dominantly formed by debris flows, as evident from sedimentological analysis of outcrops in gully-fans. The inferred debris-flow origin for many gullies implies limited and strongly ephemeral liquid water during gully-formation. For example in Istok crater, debris flows occurred at Earth-like frequencies (one flow every 1-100 yr) during short high-obliquity periods in the last million years on Mars. ▼ Glaciers and ice caps (GIC) are central parts of the hydrological cycle, are key to understanding regional and global climate change, and are important contributors to global sea level rise, regional water resources and local biodiversity. Multispectral (visible and near-infrared) remote sensing has been used for studying GIC and their changing characteristics for several decades. Glacier surfaces can be classified into a range of facies, or zones, which can be used as proxies for annual mass balance and also play a significant role in understanding glacier energy balance. However, multispectral sensors were not designed explicitly for snow and ice observation, so it is not self-evident that they should be optimal for remote sensing of glaciers. There are no universal techniques for glacier surface classification which have been optimized with in situ reflectance spectra. Therefore, the roles that the various spectral, spatial, and radiometric properties of each sensor play in the success and output of resulting classifications remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study approaches the problem from an inverse perspective. Starting with in situ reflectance spectra from the full range of surfaces measured on two glaciers at the end of the melt season in order to capture the largest range of facies (Midtre Lovénbreen, Svalbard & Langjökull, Iceland), optimal wavelengths for glacier facies identification are investigated with principal component analysis. Two linear combinations are produced which capture the vast majority of variance in the data; the first highlights broadband albedo while the second emphasizes the difference in reflectance between blue and near-infrared wavelengths for glacier surface classification. The results confirm previous work which limited distinction to snow, slush, and ice facies. Based on these in situ data, a simple, and more importantly completely transferrable, classification scheme for glacier surfaces is presented for a range of satellite multispectral sensors. Again starting with in situ data, application of relative response functions, scaling factors, and calibration coefficients shows that almost all simulated multispectral sensors (at certain gain settings) are qualified to classify glacier accumulation and ablation areas but confuse classification of partly ash-covered glacier surfaces. In order to consider the spatial as well as the spectral properties of multispectral sensors, airborne data are spatially degraded to emulate satellite imagery; while medium-resolution sensors (~20-60 m) successfully reproduce high-resolution (2 m) observations, low-resolution sensors (i.e. 250 m+) are unable to do so. These results give confidence in results from current sensors such as ASTER and Landsat ETM+ as well as ESA’s upcoming Sentinel-2 and NASA’s recently launched LDCM. ▼ The purple sandpipers (Calidris maritima) are the most common waders in the high arctic archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. There they have to cope with a very short summer season and high metabolic costs of migrating far north and breeding in an arctic environment. The food on land is usually scarce, whereas there are rich feeding grounds in the littoral zone, such as in the intertidal zone of river flats. These feeding grounds are though only available to the purple sandpipers during low tide and as long as the estuary is not covered by sea ice. One of these intertidal flats was used as the fieldwork area in this study. To study when the birds are coming to this intertidal flat for feeding, a count study was performed during the entire stay of the purple sandpipers in Svalbard in summer 2010. Point counts were performed at low tide during 118 different days. Additionally, point counts were performed at twenty days during the six hours of the entire low tide period, to study when during the tidal cycle most sandpipers were feeding at the estuary. Most sandpipers were counted at the intertidal flat at the beginning of June with the highest number, 921 individuals, on 8th June. When the tundra was free of snow and the birds could start breeding, numbers where rapidly declining with very few sandpipers left in the estuary in July and the first part of August. From the end of August numbers were increasing again with a second but lower peak in the end of September and beginning of October. By the end of October all sandpipers had left the estuary. The study on the appearance of purple sandpipers at the estuary at the different periods of low tide showed that there were significantly more sandpipers between low tide and half an hour later than at the rest of the low tide period. This might be due to better access to their prey at that time. This knowledge could be used in future studies aiming at recording the maximum numbers. The result of the phenologic study could be included in a long term monitoring to see if the numbers and the timing of purple sandpipers are stable in this area or not: Are the peak numbers differing significantly? Is the timing of the arrival, the stay on the tundra and the timing of leaving the archipelago in the fall changing? Long-term monitoring would be especially interesting in the view of possible influences of the climate change on the purple sandpipers. Rising sea level as a result of the climate change would change the morphology of the estuaries and thereby influence the food resources available for sandpipers.

▼ Gas hydrates have traditionally been viewed as hazardous to petroleum operations, particularly with respect to flow assurance in pipelines and slope stability. They occur where gas migrates through environments characterised by moderate pressures and low temperatures. Gas hydrates thus naturally occur in two main settings, i.e., a deepmarine, offshore setting and a polar, onshore setting associated with permafrost. While nowadays considered a vast potential source of hydrocarbons, stability of gas hydrates in the permafrost setting is being compromised by climate change, with release of even a small fraction of the permafrost-associated hydrates being potentially hazardous. Exploration and quantification of Svalbard's gas hydrate potential is limited compared to other polar regions (e.g., Russia, Alaska, Arctic Canada), even though the archipelago's unique setting makes it even more prone to change. By designing a semi-automated workflow, and incorporating all available data, this work has resulted in the first assessment of the GHSZ for central Spitsbergen. The framework's Python back-end allows for both laterally and vertically changing input parameters, is easily upgradable with both new functions and novel datasets, and provides a link to third-party tools while guaranteeing industry-standard support through Schlumberger's Petrel front-end. Although uncertainties in local temperature and pressure regimes prevent higher-order assessments, a strong correlation is observed between GHSZ and base permafrost. On a regional scale, the vertical extent of the GHSZ is most pronounced in areas with thick layers of permafrost, i.e., highlands and mountains, with the lateral extent governed by trends governing surface and subsurface thermobaric conditions. In Adventdalen, intrapermafrost heterogeneities, wet gas and pressure built-up near the base permafrost, and borderline favourable thermal regimes, make for a likely gas hydrate formation setting. Changes in surface temperature are likely to destabilise a substantial part of the regional GHSZ. The versatility of the workflow has furthermore been shown via an offshore GHSZ modelling effort targeting the Fingerdjupet Subbasin, SW Barents Sea, through a collaboration with the operating company Spirit Energy.

▼ Glaciers and ice caps (GIC) are central parts of the hydrological cycle, are key to understanding regional and global climate change, and are important contributors to global sea level rise, regional water resources and local biodiversity. Multispectral (visible and near-infrared) remote sensing has been used for studying GIC and their changing characteristics for several decades. Glacier surfaces can be classified into a range of facies, or zones, which can be used as proxies for annual mass balance and also play a significant role in understanding glacier energy balance. However, multispectral sensors were not designed explicitly for snow and ice observation, so it is not self-evident that they should be optimal for remote sensing of glaciers. There are no universal techniques for glacier surface classification which have been optimized with in situ reflectance spectra. Therefore, the roles that the various spectral, spatial, and radiometric properties of each sensor play in the success and output of resulting classifications remain largely unknown. Therefore, this study approaches the problem from an inverse perspective. Starting with in situ reflectance spectra from the full range of surfaces measured on two glaciers at the end of the melt season in order to capture the largest range of facies (Midtre Lovénbreen, Svalbard & Langjökull, Iceland), optimal wavelengths for glacier facies identification are investigated with principal component analysis. Two linear combinations are produced which capture the vast majority of variance in the data; the first highlights broadband albedo while the second emphasizes the difference in reflectance between blue and near-infrared wavelengths for glacier surface classification. The results confirm previous work which limited distinction to snow, slush, and ice facies. Based on these in situ data, a simple, and more importantly completely transferrable, classification scheme for glacier surfaces is presented for a range of satellite multispectral sensors. Again starting with in situ data, application of relative response functions, scaling factors, and calibration coefficients shows that almost all simulated multispectral sensors (at certain gain settings) are qualified to classify glacier accumulation and ablation areas but confuse classification of partly ash-covered glacier surfaces. In order to consider the spatial as well as the spectral properties of multispectral sensors, airborne data are spatially degraded to emulate satellite imagery; while medium-resolution sensors (~20-60 m) successfully reproduce high-resolution (2 m) observations, low-resolution sensors (i.e. 250 m+) are unable to do so. These results give confidence in results from current sensors such as ASTER and Landsat ETM+ as well as ESA’s upcoming Sentinel-2 and NASA’s recently launched LDCM. In addition, images from the Landsat data archive are used to classify glacier facies and calculate the albedo of glaciers on the Brøgger Peninsula, Svalbard. ▼ Plankton are generally considered good indicators for ocean climate variability, but plankton data from the Arctic are still comparatively scarce. Due to this scarcity of information, the prevalence of vertical migration behaviour at high latitude is still debated. Atlantic inflow is a key process governing biological diversity in the Arctic Ocean, and the location of the Svalbard archipelago makes it an ideal study area to monitor this inflow. Comparing the zooplankton community within the fjords of Svalbard at various latitudes allowed us to assess the influence of Atlantic inflow and any subsequent changes in zooplankton composition that may have implications for higher trophic levels. Using sediment traps deployed on oceanic moorings, Chapter 3 of this thesis analysed long term observations from sea-ice dominated Rijpfjorden for the first time, and compared the zooplankton to Atlantic Water influenced Kongsfjorden. Chapters 4 and 5 investigated the spatial relevance of our moored observations using shipboard observations, and chapters 6 and 7 present observations of vertical migration across a range of conditions. Kongsfjorden was dominated by Calanus copepods associated with Arctic and Atlantic water, and strongly influenced by Atlantic Water advection. Rijpfjorden was largely influenced by sea-ice formation with higher proportional abundances of macrozooplankton species. Advection brought Atlantic associated species into Rijpfjorden during warmer years. Prevailing hydrology and bathymetry were highlighted as factors forcing zooplankton distribution, while advection was identified as responsible for much of the observed small scale spatial variation amongst weaker swimmers. At an aggregation scale of 0.5 nautical miles, zooplankton distribution was highly patchy and moored observations could only be reliably expanded outwards to a maximum of 1 nautical mile. Low amplitude diel vertical migration (especially by younger copepodids) was identified in surface waters when a food source was available. These observations must be considered within the dynamic framework of advection highlighted by this thesis. Advisors/Committee Members: Brierley, Andrew (advisor).

Mehr als 90 % des Meeresbodens weist eine Temperatur von unter 4 ° C auf und stellt somit einen wichtigen Lebensraum für marine Mikroorganismen dar. Durch DsrAB-Stammbaumanalyse konnte ein Einblick in die Diversität von sulfatreduzierenden Mikroorganismen (SRM) in diesem Lebensraum gewonnen werden. Der Vergleich zweier mariner Standorte vor der Westküste von Svalbard ergab eine unterschiedliche phylogenetische Zusammensetzung. So bildeten die Mehrheit der gefundenen OTUs (67 % der Sequenzen) des Sediment des nördlicher gelegenen Smeerenburgfjorden (Station J) eine tiefzweigende, monophyletische Gruppe, welche keine Verwandtschaft zu kultivierbaren SRM aufwies, während der Großteil der erhaltenen OTUs (52 % der Sequenzen), isoliert aus dem Sediment von van Mijenfjorden (Station AH) den Deltaproteobacteria zugeordnet werden konnte. Ein weiteres Ziel dieser Arbeit war die Durchführung einer 16S-rRNS-Stammbaumanalyse sowie die Quantifizierung von sporenbildenden, thermophilen Mikroorganismen in arktischem Sediment, isoliert aus zwei Inkubationsreihen bei 50 °C mit, bzw. ohne initialer Zugabe von organischen Substraten. Die Quantifizierung von thermophilen SRM zeigte für beide Inkubationen nach einer anfänglichen Erhöhung der Gen-Abundanz, eine gleichbleibende Kopienzahl der DNS-Matrize für die restliche Inkubation. Die initiale Substratzugabe schien dabei keinen Einfluss auf das Wachstum der SRM, aber auf ihre metabolische Aktivität zu haben. Anhand der phylogenetische Analyse konnte die Mehrheit der Sequenzen (54 %), welche mit allgemeinen 16S-rRNS-Primern amplifiziert wurden, der Klasse der Clostridia zugeordnet werden. 20 % aller Sequenzen gruppierten dabei innerhalb der Gattung Desulfotomaculum, welche Vertreter beinhaltet, die in der Lage sind durch Endosporen extreme Bedingungen zu überdauern. Des Weiteren wurden Sequenzen identifiziert, welche eine hohe Sequenzähnlichkeit zu Vertretern der Gattungen Tepidibacter, Caloranaerobacter und Garciella aufwiesen. Diese Linien beinhalten thermophile Organismen, welche Kohlenhydrate und Proteine zu kurzkettigen freien Fettsäuren abbauen und somit SRM Elektronendonoren zu Verfügung stellen. Einige Vertreter dieser Linien sind mit Ölreservoirs oder heißen marinen Quellen assoziiert, welche möglicherweise den Ursprung der thermophilen Organismen in diesem Habitat darstellen.

Since 90 % of the marine sediment has a temperature below 4 °C it is a very important habitat for microorganisms. It was possible to gain insight into the diversity of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) in this habitat by analysing DsrAB-sequences. The comparison of two different fjord sediments on the west coast of Svalbard in the Arctic showed differences in the phylogeny of SRB. Most (67 %) of the sequences obtained from the northern Smeerenburgfjorden sediment (station J), showed no affinity to cultivated SRB and generated a monophyletic, deeply branching group within the tree. Svalbard är en arktisk ögrupp i Norra ishavet som förvaltas av Norge och huvudorten är Longyearbyen. I Longyearbyen och som på alla andra platser pågår förorenande aktiviteter, denna rapport är avgränsad till utsläpp via avloppsvatten till marina miljöer. I Arktis märks klimatförändringarna tydligt, det finns många olika styrmedel som skulle kunna förhindra föroreningen av dessa sårbara områden. Styrmedel som det visat sig under arbetet med den här rapporten inte fungerar som det var tänkt, med åsyftan på avloppshanteringen i Longyearbyen. Det finns inget avloppsreningsverk i byn där det bor ca 2300 fastboende och gästdygnen uppgick år 2015 till 128 000. Utsläppet av det orenade avloppsvattnet ut i Adventfjorden tillåts av det kravställande organet Sysselmannen på Svalbard, som gett kommunen tillstånd med lagstöd i Svalbardmiljöloven, att systematiskt släppa ut det förorenade avloppsvattnet. Målet med denna rapport är att undersöka den nuvarande utsläppssituationen med gällande styrmedel och att förstå varför tillståndet till utsläppet av det orenade avloppsvattnet getts. Svalbard is an Arctic Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean that is governed by Norway and the main city is Longyearbyen. In Longyearbyen, much like any other place, there is contaminating activities going on. This report is concentrated on the emissions via sewage water into marine environments. In the Arctic, climate change is very noticeable and there are many different instruments that could prevent the pollution of these vulnerable areas. During the time working on this report these instruments have shown that they are not functioning as supposed, with regards to the sewage management in Longyearbyen. There is no sewerage in the town which inhabits 2300 permanent residents and where there were, in the year of 2015, 128 000 overnight stays of tourists. The pollution of the unfiltered sewage water allowed into Adventfjorden has been permitted by the governing organisation, Sysselmannen on Svalbard. Sysselmannen has given the municipality permission with support from the environmental protection law of Svalbard (Svalbardmiljøloven) to systematically release the polluted water into the marine environments. ▼ Basalt weathering is an important process on both Earth and Mars, yet basalt weathering rates remain poorly understood. This dissertation uses a combination of laboratory experiments, field work, and modeling to study weathering rates under conditions relevant to early Earth and Mars. Basalt weathering profiles have been characterized in arctic Mars analog Svalbard (Norway). Modeling of basalt weathering in Svalbard is used to groundtruth the reactive transport model CrunchFlow, which is then used to interpret observed alteration on the surface of Mars. Mineral dissolution as a function of time and pH is compared in terrestrial environments, and then extrapolated to the surface of Mars. In compiled terrestrial environments, mineral persistence times are approximately: olivine (~10 ka), glass (~250 ka), pyroxene (~1Ma), and plagioclase (~5Ma). Reconnaissance batch experiments were performed to test the dissolution rates of basalt glass and olivine under conditions specifically designed to be relevant to Mars: low temperature, low pH, high ionic strength and oxic and anoxic atmospheres. The absence of oxygen is observed to increase the dissolution rate of fayalite, and the presence of a CaCl2-NaCl-H2O brine is observed to decrease dissolution rates by approximately one order of magnitude. Leaching by citrate of basalt and granite in long-term column experiments enhances the release rate of elements: La,Y, Ce, Th, Al, P, Ti, Fe, Ni, Pb (basalt and granite), Zr, Sc, and Mn (basalt), and V and Zn (granite). This suggests that depletions or enrichments in these elements may prove useful biosignatures in the rock record from early Earth or Mars. Methanogens, microorganisms which may have been important on early Earth and have been proposed to be present on Mars, were grown with a synthesized silicate Ni-containing glass to determine whether they might produce a recognizable Ni signature through the production of cell exudates, cell lysates, siderophores, or biofilms. We determine that the largest effect the methanogens might have on weathering in their environment might be through uptake of CO2. ▼ The sinking of dense shelf waters down the continental slope (or “cascading”) contributes to oceanic water mass formation and carbon cycling. Cascading is therefore of significant importance for the global overturning circulation and thus climate. The occurrence of cascades is highly intermittent in space and time and observations of the process itself (rather than its outcomes) are scarce. Global climate models do not typically resolve cascading owing to numerical challenges concerning turbulence, mixing and faithful representation of bottom boundary layer dynamics. This work was motivated by the need to improve the representation of cascading in numerical ocean circulation models. Typical 3-D hydrostatic ocean circulation models are employed in a series of numerical experiments to investigate the process of dense water cascading in both idealised and realistic model setups. Cascading on steep bottom topography is modelled using POLCOMS, a 3-D ocean circulation model using a terrain-following s-coordinate system. The model setup is based on a laboratory experiment of a continuous dense water flow from a central source on a conical slope in a rotating tank. The descent of the dense flow as characterised by the length of the plume as a function of time is studied for a range of parameters, such as density difference, speed of rotation, flow rate and (in the model) diffusivity and viscosity. Very good agreement between the model and the laboratory results is shown in dimensional and non-dimensional variables. It is confirmed that a hydrostatic model is capable of reproducing the essential physics of cascading on a very steep slope if the model correctly resolves velocity veering in the bottom boundary layer. Experiments changing the height of the bottom Ekman layer (by changing viscosity) and modifying the plume from a 2-layer system to a stratified regime (by enhancing diapycnal diffusion) confirm previous theories, demonstrate their limitations and offer new insights into the dynamics of cascading outside of the controlled laboratory conditions. In further numerical experiments, the idealised geometry of the conical slope is retained but up-scaled to oceanic dimensions. The NEMO-SHELF model is used to study the fate of a dense water plume of similar properties to the overflow of brine-enriched shelf waters from the Storfjorden in Svalbard. The overflow plume, resulting from sea ice formation in the Storfjorden polynya, cascades into the ambient stratification resembling the predominant water masses of Fram Strait. At intermediate depths between 200-500m the plume encounters a layer of warm, saline AtlanticWater. In some years the plume ‘pierces’ the Atlantic Layer and sinks into the deep Fram Strait while in other years it remains ‘arrested’ at Atlantic Layer depths. It has been unclear what parameters control whether the plume pierces the Atlantic Layer or not. ▼ Aurora occurs in various shapes, one of which is the hitherto unreported phenomenon of auroral fragments. For three periods of occurrence of these fragments their properties were studied in detail during this master’s thesis, using mainly ground-based instrumentation located near Longyearbyen on Svalbard, Norway. A base dataset was constructed from 103 all-sky camera images, manually marking 305 fragments for further analysis. This thesis reports and describes the fragment observations during the observed events, including the auroral and geomagnetic context. Fragments generally seem to fall into two categories, the first being singular, apparently randomly distributed fragments, and the second being periodic fragments that occur in groups with a regular spacing close to auroral arcs. A typical fragment has a small horizontal size below 20 km, a short lifetime of less than a minute and shows no field-aligned extent in the emission. The fragments appear mainly west of zenith (73%) during the three observation nights, whereas their north-south distribution is symmetric around the zenith. Almost all of them exhibit westward drift, the estimated speed for one of the fragments passing the field of view of ASK is ∼1 km/s. A spectral signature can be seen in the green auroral wavelength of O at 557.7 nm and red emission line of N2 at 673.0 nm, but no emission enhancement was observed in the blue wavelengths. One fragment passing the EISCAT Svalbard radar’s field of view shows a local ion temperature increase in a small altitude range of ∼15 km, whereas there is no visible increase in electron density. This could be explained by fragment generation due to locally strong horizontal electric fields. A potential mechanism for this might be electric fields of atmospheric waves superposing with the converging electric fields of auroral arcs created by particle precipitation and the corresponding field-aligned currents. The resulting field would be perpendicular to the magnetic field and the auroral arcs, leading to wave-like density variations of excited plasma close to the arcs. Further study is required to verify this hypothesis and improve the understanding of fragment properties determined from the limited dataset used for this thesis.
