▼ Sustainability has become one of the key elements of development for most tourist destinations. Some cities have adopted a
sustainable development strategy as a long-term solution in improving socio-economic, cultural, and environmental practices. Traditionally, destinations have used events to achieve community enrichment, protect the natural environment, and create or maintain national pride. The aim of this research was to analyse the impact of events on
sustainable tourism development in Durban. This research focused on the event
tourism sector and its impact on the economy, environment, politics and the socio-cultural being of the host community. The objectives were to discuss the role of events in profiling a destination and the extent to which they could serve as catalyst for repeat visitation; the study sought to analyse the perceptions of key stakeholders regarding the contribution of events to socio-economic growth of the City. In carrying out the research, a mixed method approach was used. A total of 400 questionnaires were researcher administered and 25 in-depth interviews were conducted. The results show that there are economic spin offs resulting from visitor spending during major events in the City. Furthermore, the study shows that although events can be used as a tool for
sustainable tourism development, the challenge is the unbalanced racial structure within the industry, poor state of the economy, and limited access to business start-up capital for SMMEs. The study concludes that events play a vital role in socio-economic growth and development of the
tourism sector in Durban and recommends multi-stakeholder collaboration and partnerships to ensure sustained
tourism growth.

▼ The purpose of this thesis was to find out the current perceptions of ecotourism in Finland. The research topic derived from my personal interest in the subject and observations about the lack of ecotourism products and marketing in Finland. Ecotourism as a field of study is challenging because of the lack of a global definition.
Various global ecotourism concepts were examined in order to find the scope for the study, because there is no ecotourism organization in Finland nor has the term ecotourism been defined. Ecotourism best practices from abroad were searched, and the emergence of ecotourism and sustainable tourism in Finland to date was also examined.
The research method was mixed: content analysis, survey and semi-structured theme interviews together helped to reach a broader understanding of the current situation. In content analysis the certification criteria of Finland’s three biggest sustainable tourism organizations ECEAT Finland, PAN Parks, and Green Tourism of Finland® were analyzed to see how well they fit to the global definitions of ecotourism. A survey was sent to Finnish nature-based tourism entrepreneurs to find out how they define ecotourism and what kind of relation they have with the branch. Furthermore, four sustainable tourism and ecotourism experts were interviewed.
From the three biggest sustainable tourism certificates, PAN Parks was the most ecotourism oriented. Green Tourism of Finland® and ECEAT need to deepen the socio-cultural sustainability and the economical aspect in their criteria in order to be called ecotourism certificates. In Finland ecotourism is understood as nature friendly tourism, which supports nature preservation, and where consumption of natural resources is minimized by recycling, saving energy, using non-motorized means of transportation such as skis and bicycles, and supporting local production. Finnish nature-based tourism entrepreneurs’ understanding of ecotourism is limited to the environmental issues. Deeper understanding of the term, where the educational aspect and socio-cultural dimension in sustainable management are included, is missing.
Finland is seen to have great potential in ecotourism, but the lack of governmental support, value-conflicts that ecotourism might bring to the local community and Finns’ incapability to see ecologicality as a competitive advantage in business have kept ecotourism very small-scale in the country. Concrete governmental support to ecotourism and more educational opportunities about sustainable tourism would help ecotourism to evolve and thus increase Finland’s competitiveness on the field against Sweden and Norway.

▼ This dissertation assesses the impact of
sustainable development and livelihood strategies on the indigenous communities of Maolin National Scenic Area (NSA) in Taiwan. I examine the relationship between the directives of indigenous policy relevant and the sustainability indicators for small islands proposed by Jesinghaus (2002) to answer the leading question: What is the influence of
sustainable tourism strategies present in the CIP policies on the Maolin NSA indigenous communities in the matters of land conservation practices, heritage protection and risk management? This dissertation offers two leading hypothesis: [1] the
sustainable development indicators for Maolin are the same as for all Taiwan, [2] the
sustainable development strategies should not be evaluated per se, but only in relation to the particular case study. The aim of this dissertation is to present how the indigenous policies inspired by the Taiwan's cultural transition, indigenous rights movement and idea of
sustainable development influenced Maolin NSA. Synthesizing the most relevant theories in indigenous
tourism studies and
sustainable development studies, this research attempts to show Maolin’s case study in a broad context. The most important contribution of this thesis is explaining new tendencies in Taiwanese inbound
tourism on the example of recently established protected area. Using Maolin NSA case analysis, this research explored the role of the indigenous policy implementation in the process of protected area establishment and management. This dissertation offers an insight into the latest tendencies in indigenous
tourism development and management in Taiwan.

▼ Imposing the principles of sustainable development on medical tourism is vital to maintaining the three pillars of a strong nation, namely, the environment, the economy, and the local community. The three research objectives of this thesis are: 1) to determine the primary factors that motivate foreign patients to travel abroad for medical services; 2) to define the role that stakeholders play for developing the medical tourism sector; and 3) to develop an implementable framework for establishing a sustainable medical facility. These objectives help lay the foundations for a medical tourism facility that would respond well to the future demands of international patients, and would remain competitive with other medical facilities in the global market while also improving local quality-of-life and remaining within ecological constraints. Therefore, this research adopts a case study methodology to examine a framework developed through the literature review to determine how it fits in reality. In addition, this research provides a starting point to define further the primary roles of the medical tourism network for developing the medical tourism sector.

ekoturizme. Tyrimo tikslas – išanalizuoti turizmo plėtros galimybes
darnaus vystymo kontekste. Magistro darbą sudaro trys pagrindinės
dalys. Pirmoje dalyje atskleidžiama darnaus vystymosi teorijos
esmė, samprata ir pagrindiniai aspektai, įvertinamas darnaus
turizmo daromas poveikis aplinkai, ekonomikai, kultūrai, bei
išskiriami kaimo turizmo ir ekoturizmo pagrindiniai bruožai.
Antroje dalyje pateikiama kaimo turizmo ir ekoturizmo raida
pasauliniu bei Lietuvos mastu. Siekiama paneigti ar patvirtinti
vieną iš iškeltų hipotezių. Trečiojoje dalyje pateikiami ir
įvertinami tyrimų rezultatai bei pateikiamos išvados. Siekiama
paneigti ar patvirtinti vieną iš iškeltų hipotezių. Hipotezę:„Kaimo
turizmas Lietuvoje sparčiai auga, o tuo metu kitoje darnaus turizmo
šakoje, ekoturizme jaučiamas nuosmukis“, reiktų laikyti dalinai
teisinga. Augant kaimo turizmo šakai Lietuvoje, ekoturizmo šakos
populiarumas auga taip pat. Hipotezę: „Lietuvoje kaimo turizmo

pačiu perimdami turistų srautus iš ekoturizmo“. Ekoturizmas
nusileidžia kaimo turizmui pagal turizmo paslaugos... [toliau žr.

▼ The research problem was based on the private sector implementation of Responsible Tourism, since 1996, perceived to be slow and challenging (Frey & George, 2010: 107). The South Africa Government proposed Responsible Tourism as the guiding principle for sustainable tourism development (Goodwin, 2011: 138). The problem is compounded by shortcomings identified in the nature of the research conducted about tourism and communities and the methodologies used. Tourism-Community relationships Theory was applied as the conceptual framework of the study. This theory advocates a holistic approach when conducting research about the impacts of tourism, encompassing community perspectives, attitudes, reactions and considerations for the future development and control of tourism (Pearce, Moscardo & Ross, 1996: 2). The insights gained contributed an emic understanding of the keyinformants’ perspectives imparted in their own language. This study is located in the Interpretevist paradigm, underpinned by Constructivist philosophy. Meaning is created through the reality of key-informants, their perspectives and the interaction of individuals in a community (Cresswell, 2014: 8). The Instrumental Case Study Approach (Stake, 1995) contributed an etic perspective in terms of the researcher’s interpretations. The single, qualitative case was applied to gain deeper insights about the phenomenon of Responsible tourism. The case investigated was Stormsriver Adventures (SRA), an eco-adventure tourism business in the Tsitsikamma tourism destination in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. SRA is reputed to be business best practice in its implementation of Responsible Tourism. Data triangulation was established through multiple methods of data collection, namely in-depth interviews with key-informants, documentation sourced from them and researcher observation. Data analysis methods, namely direct interpretation, categorical aggregation, pattern seeking and naturalistic generalisations (Stake, 1995), were used. The member checking process assisted with establishing data triangulation as keyinformants corroborated or dispelled the researcher’s interpretation of data. Findings were structured according to within-case themes, namely SRA’s perspective of its Responsible Tourism practices, the community’s perspective of SRA’s Responsible Tourism practices and perspectives about the future development and control of tourism. The study contributes new theoretical insights through applying the inductive approach to selected findings. Findings indicate that the perspectives of the community are divided. SRA keyinformants conveyed positive economic, social and environmental impacts of SRA’s Responsible Tourism practices. Key-informants not directly linked to SRA raised negative economic impacts and questioned the accuracy of SRA’s marketing messages. Within-case conclusions are that it is not the responsibility of one tourism business that practices Responsible Tourism to achieve sustainability within the tourism destination. To this end it is…

▼ In many developing countries, Community-Based
Tourism (CBT) is regarded as a
sustainable tourism development tool as well as a catalyst for rural community development through the involvement of local people and the improvement of the standard of living. To extend the involvement of the local community in CBT, homestay
tourism is a form of operation unit and its concept aims to facilitate individual household social-cultural and economic benefit from CBT directly. Although homestays are widely regarded as providing better livelihoods directly to the homestay operators, it is not clear to what extent homestay operations actually contribute to the
sustainable livelihood of homestay operators when considering the wider livelihood implications. This research seeks to explore this gap by analysing homestay operators through the lens of
Sustainable Livelihood theory (Scoones, 1998). This research adopts a post-positivist paradigm with qualitative methodology. Taking a case study approach, semi-structured interviews and observations were employed to collect primary data from community leaders, heads and deputy heads of the tourist guides, and homestay operators themselves.
Results of the study found that although homestay
tourism was initially established by the government. The study also found the main characteristics of the homestay operation are in a small size with a limitation of bedrooms, and a few family members involved in hosting tourists, which are husband, wife, and an adult child. All of these people are unpaid labour but receive benefits from the sharing of food and shelter. The study also uncovered that cash-based income, gender empowerment enhancement, and environmental enhancement were the positive impacts of homestay
tourism on the livelihoods of the homestay operators, and these positive livelihood outcomes were in line with the original
sustainable livelihood framework. In addition, cultural revitalisation was found as an emerged indicator of the
sustainable livelihood outcomes, which was used to extend the revised framework. However, the study discovered that opportunity costs, culture shock, and conflict with villagers were negative implications affecting
sustainable livelihood outcomes of the homestay operators. The revised
Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) suggests that if these negative implications are mitigated, the overall livelihood outcomes will be even greater. The results of this study are expected to provide a deeper understanding of how the impacts of homestay
tourism on the
sustainable livelihood of the homestay operators.

▼ This research is a post event study that looks at
the experience, challenges and the sustainability of the township
tourism industry in Soweto after the 2010 FIFA World Cup ™. South
Africa faces the challenge of high unemployment and low economic
growth. The awarding of the world cup was seen as a welcome
opportunity to address these challenges.
Tourism was identified as
a sector that could play a huge role. Many partnerships were formed
by business and government to maximise the 2010 World Cup
experience on the
tourism sector. Entrepreneurship and SMME
development was seen as a way to get the less skilled active in the
tourism economy. This study draws on research of mega events, SMME
development and
tourism. The findings were that although the
tourism industry has had a good world cup experience and most
SMME‟s have benefited, the maximisation of this benefit was not
achieved. Recommendations include implementing interventions from
studies undertaken from end to end, encouraging youth SMME‟s and
growing internal
tourism. Copyright

▼ Tourism once thrived in Kotzebue, a rural largely Iñupiat Eskimo community in Northwest Alaska. Today there is very little evidence of the summer
tourism that once characterized this remote Arctic town. Trends suggest a revival of
tourism in Kotzebue, though little is being done to prepare for an almost inevitable rebirth. This research is intended to identify local concerns about
tourism, the current state of
tourism and offer guidance for
sustainable tourism. Qualitative and inductive research was conducted to understand local feelings about
tourism and possible reasons past
tourism levels could not be sustained. Suggestions are given for a new direction for
tourism. Secondary research examined the concept of
sustainable tourism, profiles of current and potential visitors to the region, and tools and strategies to manage
tourism and its impacts. The study concludes past
tourism did not have major detrimental effects on the community, and there are both lingering resentment and caution about future
tourism, as well as definite local interest in its development.

▼ The rock hewn churches of Lalibela are among the nine tangible sites in Ethiopia registered in
the world heritage list. The study was carried out to asses and identifies the major contributions
of Lalibela Rock Hewn Churches (RHCL) to
sustainable tourism development in Ethiopia. The
study used concurrent mixed method of data collection such as questionnaire, interview,
observation and document review. A total of 288 respondents from local communities and visitors
were used for collecting primary information via semi-structured questioner. In addition, 10
representatives of local communities were interviewed in the course of the study. The life of local
community in Lalibela is related to the churches: physically the peoples live around them,
economically the churches are the main sources of income, and spiritually the peoples belong to
the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church. The majority of respondents are participating in
tourism sector such as in accommodation, shopping, hotel, cooking and traditional performance,
serving as priest and being experts in the city administration office of culture and
tourism.
Despite its importance, regarding the negative impact of
tourism; the majority of respondents 70
(63.6%) agreed and 27 (24.3%) disagree for the question “
tourism has increased the level of
commercialized the culture in Lalibela town. Around 87.6% of the respondents were their first
trip to visit the RHCL. The majority of the respondents 57 (32%) came to Lalibela mainly to visit
the rock-hewn churches after they got information from their friends and colleagues. The majority
of visitors 103 (58%) estimated that the state of degradation of the RHCL within the next ten
years might be between 41-70%. Hence, among the RHCL Bete Amanuel, Bete Abba Libanos,
Bete Medhanealem, Bete Merkorios, Bete Giorgis are highly endangered in the parts such as
roof, pillars, interior and exterior parts cracking due to the newly constructed shelter load and
geological, climate and biological factors. The conservation and maintenance works used to
sustain
tourism practices in Lalibela lacks adequacy. Therefore, the responsible parties of the
RHCL such as government organizations, local community, civil societies and development
investors must work to meet standards for conserving and sustaining
tourism development
practices in Ethiopia, particularly in Lalibela.

▼ The construction of the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali in 1969 facilitated the birth of mass tourism on the island, as well as an increasing concentration of tourist-centered developments. As the tourism industry now constitutes 70% of the island’s GDP, tourist-dominant developments are highly economically profitable, but often culturally and environmentally unsustainable. Developments are continuously pushing boundaries into an increasing number of neighboring towns as tourists persistently search for “untouched” territories offering “authentic” cultural experiences. In the context of an island, with a finite amount of land, these sprawling developments are confronted with both physical and environmental constraints.
The thesis seeks to propose an alternate form of tourism development that works cyclically, leveraging seasonal activities over time, rather than one that sprawls outward. Departing from traditional notions of static developments, the thesis questions the possibilities of designing infrastructures that work in synchrony with contextual cycles. The design of a networked infrastructure investigates how tourist developments and local economies can cycle between periods of high activity, periods of dormancy, and periods of regeneration. The proposal also seeks to question how an infrastructure could facilitate a symbiotic relationship between tourism and agriculture, effectively managing resources between the two industries through these cyclical periods. In addition how can these strategies generate new spatial experiences for tourists? How can spaces facilitate the possibilities of enhanced translatability in terms of the different stakeholders involved and their unique aspirations and often competing desires?

▼ A commonly accepted approach to mitigate negative environmental, social and economic impacts and encourage the creation of
sustainable buildings is to evaluate resort buildings to ensure their sustainability. There are two types of assessment approach for evaluating the sustainability of
tourism accommodation facilities:
sustainable tourism assessment systems (STAS) and green building rating tools (GBRT). In the
tourism industry there is a tendency by developing countries to assimilate existing
sustainable tourism assessment systems such as EarthCheck and Green Globe and green building rating methods such as LEED and Green Star. However, it is arguable if these existing STAS and GBRT could be adapted to the diverse climates, local cultures, societies and economies of developing countries. Most STAS and GBRT are developed and designed to reflect the environmental concerns, building standards and social needs of their home countries. A framework to develop a new generation
sustainable resort development for Malaysia was formulated through this research. In line with this study, three existing STAS and GBRT were critically reviewed. It was found that STAS are more focused on the operational phase of resort development and GBRT are more focused on resort facility design and construction. The review also revealed that GBRT evaluations mainly concentrate on environmental performance assessment and thus are not adequate at addressing the wider sustainability issues which are important for a developing country such as Malaysia. Although some of their indicators are universal and can be adapted for use in resort development in Malaysia, others are more contextually specific and either needed major changes for adaptation or is not applicable. In combination with findings from relevant literature, interviews and survey, a suitable rating structure and a set of indicators to assess
sustainable resort development were identified. To validate the overall findings of this research the identified rating framework was then tested against five Malaysian case studies. This research suggests a number of recommendations for the development of
tourism sustainability rating tools in general: - Developing such a rating framework should be based on previous research and the technical knowledge of
tourism experts. Local
tourism experts and stakeholders should be key participants in this process, as the development of rating tools requires collaboration. Local
tourism sustainability strategies and goals should be addressed as a major aim. A
tourism sustainability assessment framework should suit the local context of the country; depending on its culture, issues, players, practices and institutions. It is essential for each country to design its own indicators in its own way to serve its shared goals and to solve its own
tourism centric problems. Countries should learn from previous established work and ideas and they should use the work of experts as inputs to their discussion. This framework can be further developed into a tool for the…

In the last two decades sustainability has become a central matter in tourism, giving rise to more proactive development strategies from destination management organizations, to more responsible attitudes from the tourism industry, and increased awareness and concerns from consumers. Particularly in developed countries a great emphasis has been placed on the identification of indicators that enable to understand sustainable tourism development processes and its implications.
However, in developing countries, sustainability with regard to tourism is still an emerging issue. This research addresses the process of the sustainable tourism assessment in developing countries, with particular reference to Armenia, namely which indicators can be put into practice in order to help tourism organizations and tourism businesses to meet sustainability requirements and to gain the confidence of tourism markets.
Secondary data analysis was conducted, both to identify the theoretical background and conceptual framework as well as to identify available data on the practical assessments carried out throughout the world with regards to tourism sustainability assessment. This research concludes by proposing the set of indicators that best fit the specific context of Armenia.

▼ January 2015 commenced a compromising procedure by the General Assembly about the aftermath of the unachieved millennium development goals (MDGs), (UN, 2019). With less than ten years of action remaining, to ensure the achievement of these goals, there has been a call for action to mobilize funds, ensure national inclusion of the goals while strengthening and charging various stakeholders to achieve these goals by 2030 without leaving anyone behind (UN, 2019). Tourism, for the past decades has been known to provide quality jobs for ensuring economic and social growth, tackling poverty and ensuring environmental conservation (UNWTO, 2018). However, the negative impacts of tourism has made its positive contribution to the UNs SDGs difficult and raises a question as to whether tourism may indeed contribute to the SDGs (Boluk, 2019; Hall, 2019). Notably, social entrepreneurship and social entrepreneur were first identified in the literature on social change in the 1960s and 1970s but became much known in retort to the cumulative existing societal imbalances (Sheldon et al, 2017). “Social entrepreneurs have profound implications in the economic system: creating new industries, validating new business models, and allocating resources to neglected societal problems” (Santos, 2012, p. 335). This basic qualitative research is to understand in what ways tourism social entrepreneurs are progressing sustainable tourism and the sustainable development goals in Ghana. This article suggests that tourism through social entrepreneurship contributes immensely to sustainable tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals. This study found that tourism social entrepreneurs in Ghana, are engaged with the sustainable tourism along with the SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth, SDG4: Quality Education and SDG 5: Gender Equality. In their quest to ensure sustainability, social entrepreneurs in this study shed a light on the associated challenges with inadequate financial support serving as the most identifiable.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Indigenous communities around the world are becoming involved in tourism development to gain the social, economic, cultural and environmental benefits that the sector can offer. However, limitations in accessing resources, funding, support and skill-training may reduce many of the possible benefits of tourism development. These limitations may lead Indigenous communities to either not engage in tourism development or engage in options that may not best suit Indigenous people. The lack of suitable engagement options with Indigenous communities can lead to issues such as: commodification of culture; inauthenticity of cultural representation; loss of Indigenous knowledge, heritage and values; as well as the continuous deficit of social benefits, such as education and skill-training. This study aims to examine how alternative, digital options for engagement in, and control over, tourism development may mitigate these limitations and issues for Indigenous peoples and communities, while increasing the benefits of tourism development. The research for this study was conducted with the Wagiman community of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia, who possess distinct representations of culture, identity and knowledge of country, as well as a broad range of data resources, including: collections of placenames; geographic data; ethnobiology data; interviews; and access to already established tourism infrastructures. These data resources support the evaluation of digital mapping and marketing of Wagiman knowledge through Google maps, websites and mobile apps as well as the feasibility of Indigenous tourism development, the conservation of local heritage, and potentially positive social benefits and political influence for the long term. The objective of this research is to determine: 1.) The options for engaging with the Wagiman participants in ways that benefit and empower the wider Wagiman and Pine Creek communities. 2.) Whether the Wagiman people of Pine Creek wish to engage in tourism development, and if so, what the options for engagement might be. 3.) Whether digital options for engagement in tourism development are viable for the authentic sharing, conservation and promotion of Wagiman heritage to tourists, younger generations of Wagiman people as well as the wider Pine Creek community. 4.) If tourists visiting Pine Creek are interested in local and Aboriginal tourism attractions and/or would access Wagiman knowledge on digital platforms while travelling. 5.) How should digital tourism and heritage products be managed to advance longer-term sustainability. This study finds that adopting Wagiman methodologies of research, such as oral knowledge-sharing on-site in Wagiman country, as well as through digital interpretation off-site, may help promote and conserve Wagiman, and wider community, heritage in Pine Creek. Digital options of Wagiman engagement in tourism may: 1.) foster local pride and empowerment by providing access to tourism and heritage…

▼ Background: Sustainable development is considered to be one of today's most comprehensive challenges, which will require extensive changes, adaptations and innovation in all levels of the society worldwide. Simultaneously, the social and economic phenomenon of tourism has seen remarkable growth and development over the last decades, leading to become one of the fastest-growing economic sectors in the world, as well as a key component of the evolving socio-economic progress. However, the integration between these two requires extensive adjustments and further knowledge in the process of sustainable destination development, where this study takes an intermediary perspective. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to evaluate and explore how a tourism intermediary in Sweden is working with sustainable development and how they can utilize their position in the process of developing a geographical area as a sustainable destination. Method: This thesis is a qualitative study with an exploratory nature, where in-depth phenomenologically based interviews build knowledge upon exploring the participant’s responses through a series of three separate interviews. Thematic analysis was used to find patterns and relationships in order to analyze and validate the raw data, which later was applied to frameworks and previous literature to strengthen and build a final analysis. Conclusion: This study shows how sustainability efforts need to be enhanced and extended beyond internal processes to successfully strive towards sustainable destination development. By taking collective responsibility and putting more pressure on co-operations, creating strong networks to communicate and collaborate, incorporate internal education of sustainability and familiarize with frameworks and follow-up tools, the intermediary position can be utilized to its full potential.

▼ Government since 2000, officially eco-
tourism as an important direction for future development of
tourism industry, began to promote the concept of
sustainable tourism and the implementation of related work. Hualien was selected as one of the regions to promote eco-
tourism, because there have rich natural landscape and cultural resources. Experience of fifteen years (2000-2015) of the eco-
tourism development process, there have been many advertised "eco-
tourism" development cases. However, in this symbolizes the
sustainable development of green
tourism framework, actors for ecological
tourism imagine actually not the same. From the local
tourism market competition and social pressures felt by the actors are not the same. Resulting in significant differences in the practice of ecotourism variety of actors. Therefore, this article through the literature analysis, in-depth interviews and participant observation approach, classification ecotourism development actors in Hualien, and marked its position in the spectrum of eco-
tourism. Answer what actors practice cases are more close to the normative concern with local eco-
tourism and
sustainable development.
First, through the study of the development of eco-
tourism and Taiwan
tourism plan, discuss what role the country played in ecotourism forward the work, and what institutional arrangements and policies through, affecting the practice of eco-
tourism. Via the central level and regional-level discussions Hualien two directions, each eco-
tourism promotion process. Although the Government use of many institutional arrangements and relevant units to assist. But regulatory and incentive mechanism is not clear and perfect, encouragement and advocacy resulting effect is not obvious cause. Look like a supplement as well. In addition, the more serious problem is that the government's
tourism development goals, still emphasize large-scale
tourism development model and tourist trips ascribed to imagination. This problem affect the development of eco-
tourism resources and the environment.
Secondly, by "environmental sustainability", "Environmental Education", "economic prosperity in the ground," the three directions, view the "ideal " and "
tourism " two types of actors in eco-
tourism, and how they respond to the ecological
Tourism ideal. The paper found that "ideal" action because they have the right to social care, it is close to the ideal for eco-
tourism. "
Tourism" in the pursuit of profit, change the way the promotion of eco-
tourism, caused it to deviate from the ideal for eco-
tourism. In addition, the practice of various types of actors still faced many from market competitionn, challenge of the national
tourism development model as well as issues such as how to cooperate with the local community. Because the actors own considerations, eco-
tourism model will be very pluralistic, and the gap between the ideal eco-
tourism.
Finally, the study found that there are many eco-
tourism itineraries in Hualien.
The "ideal" than "
tourism" closer to the ideal eco-
tourism. Regardless of what…

▼ Mega sporting events are tourist-based events that have recently begun subscribing to the
sustainable development framework by greening its events to curtail environmental impact, especially on travel. The
sustainable transport strategies outlined in the Green Goal Program for the 2010 FIFA World Cup aimed to reduce car use in favor of public transport, promote environmental awareness, and encourage behavior change. This thesis is an assessment of the structural and informational
sustainable transport strategies implemented at the 2010 FIFA World Cup from the event goer perspective. An eclectic approach using social media, web resources, and quantitative-qualitative methods was used. Event goers reported using car more than public transport; many did not notice the environmental campaigns; hardly any post-event behavior changes related to travel were made. Event goer context provides insight on the effectiveness of structural and informational strategies and yields recommendations to improve outcomes for future events. iii

▼ This thesis considers the three Albanian World Heritage sites of Butrint, Berat and Gjirokastra in the light of heritage
tourism and
sustainable development. These heritage sites have their own unique characteristics with much potential for further
tourism development and the development of community awareness of their heritage. To safeguard sustainability of this heritage for future generations, the implementation of
sustainable and effective management plans to protect the significance of these sites and to mitigate
tourism impacts is necessary. In this study the concepts of sustainability and heritage
tourism are first explained in the way they are used for the analysis. Subsequently, the World Heritage Sites (WHS) of Butrint, Berat and Gjirokastra are analyzed on the basis of a few sustainability principles to measure the degree of integration of these principles within current heritage management and
tourism planning of these sites. The sustainability principles can be outlined as continuity, intergenerational equity, intragenerational equity, diversity, a precautionary principle and interdependence. The outcome of these principles for each heritage site is discussed on the basis of a qualitative content analysis of literature and management plans. Finally, a short comparison is made between the WHS to seek for aspects that can contribute to an improved management of other sites and to seek for aspects that require more attention or improvement.

tourism sector in the country has grown in the last decades, and Trujillo has experienced this growth as well, due to the wide array of socio-cultural and environmental attractions, both natural and built, that it posses. In this context, the district of Moche holds one of the main spots that attract tourists to visit Trujillo, the Huacas del Sol y la Luna. However; the profit generated from the
tourism sector does not necessarily go to improve the spatial conditions of the district, which currently faces unregulated urban sprawl, putting into risk its agricultural and archeological assets. Hence, it is urgency to think in ways of how can
tourism be a tool that helps the district to reach levels of
sustainable development, in all its dimensions: social, economic and environmental. This thesis research aims to find linkages on how by improving environmental conditions (of both urban and rural areas), the social and economic ones can also be positively affected. Moreover, the proposal, a strategic spatial plan, considers the governance aspect, thought as a key element for making the plan possible. And although the scope of the proposal goes at district level, it takes into account its context at metropolitan and even regional ones, in order to make a balance of how the proposed projects could have an impact in the bigger tourist route.

▼ Geografija / Turistička geografija
просторно-временског развоја туризма у српском Подунављу;

▼ Prior studies have shown that the information communication technology sector worldwide is perceived as a transformative and enabling tool for the other economic activities to improve citizens’ lives. In a Rwandan context, information communication technology integration in economic sector activities such as tourism, with the adoption of a value chain approach, is thought to be an answer to a number of social and economic challenges, including unemployment, customer care services, and poor information knowledge. In combination with the tourism sector, it is possible that job creation opportunities could benefit unemployed Rwandans, particularly the young, where information communication technology is identified as a business in itself, and an enabling tool to improve inter-economic and crosscutting activities in a growing economy. Despite mixed results from various studies, information communication technology for a tourism village could be an enabling tool for national and regional development, if priority focus on ICT and tourism quality infrastructures is maintained. Research on the evolving nature of the information communication technology sector, through tourism activities in Rwanda, could yield many off-farm jobs besides solely agrarian activities.
The study was conducted on an extensive scale, in order to facilitate the generalisation of the results, employing 720 tourism stakeholders’ surveys, ten interviews with government tourism officials, and ten focus group discussions to garner both quantitative and qualitative data. A mixed research method was used to minimise possible research bias and maximise the accuracy of the findings in the four provinces and Kigali City in Rwanda.
Of the 720 questionnaires distributed, 615 were usable. Regarding the interviews with government officials, focus group discussions, field observations and secondary data analysis, the researcher found that the information communication technology contribution to tourism stakeholders’ economic lives was at variance with residents’ perceptions in the provinces and districts, and contradicted the information communication technology benefits of connectivity, internet accessibility and usability in their locality. It was also confirmed that information communication technology contributions to tourism stakeholders were at a very low level, where the contribution was limited to telephone subscriptions and their uses, for example for mobile money transfers. The future of information communication technology contributions to tourism stakeholders is positive, if integrated value chain approaches are adopted to benefit poor communities at a tourist destination being visited. A model of an information communication technology village for the development of a tourism village is proposed. This could serve as a catalyst to measure the impacts on both the information communication technology and tourism sectors discussed in this study. More importantly, it was clearly found that the culture of approaching local communities in the process of…

▼ The tourism industry has a big impact on world economies since it is a leading sector in employment. The big growth of the tourism industry since 1950s brought many problems to destinations. Mass tourism caused overuse of local resources which has led to environmental degradation in destinations. In order to stop the overexploitation of destinations, sustainable development and further sustainable tourism development concepts have been created. Implementation of sustainable tourism development should ensure environmental, economic, social and cultural sustainability of destinations. However, this concept is defined vaguely, and it lacks specificity, and therefore, it allows many different interpretations of its application.
This case study is located in Sade village on Lombok island in Indonesia. It is focused on exploring the impact of tourism development on sustainability of local livelihoods. Livelihood sustainability is analyzed through the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework for Tourism to which was added cultural capital as a livelihood asset since cultural capital has a big impact on sustaining traditional livelihoods. The TALC model is also used to analyze stages of tourism development in said location. Finally, the discourse of tourism sustainability is examined in the location.
The results show that currently tourism is an additional livelihood activity to farming, which is a main livelihood activity of the local community. Thus, tourism serves as a diversification tool of local livelihoods; therefore, local livelihoods are sustainable over a long term. However, further findings indicate that this situation might not last long, since big governmental tourism development interventions are ongoing. Foreign direct investment, which is part of this intervention can have negative impact on local livelihoods and can break established ties between local people and tourists. Massive tourism development that includes construction of the Mandalika all-inclusive resort will exclude the majority of the local population from involvement. Furthermore, tourists staying in this resort will have no need to go outside the resort, thus; local community will not profit from this type of tourism in the future.
Furthermore, this study reveals the impact of tourism development on the economic situation of the local population, which is improving due to tourism activities. On the other hand, negative impacts are visible on culture, such as acculturation and cultural commodification phenomena, and in the environment, where landscape transformation and land grabbing are taking place. This tourism development cannot be labelled as sustainable, since local people are not involved in any stage of the tourism process, environment is being slowly degraded and cultural and social impacts are extensive. Local population is considered in governmental tourism development only on paper but not in reality.
This qualitative research was conducted in Sade village among Sasak population on Lombok island. The data were collected during one month…

▼ The tourism industry has continuously grown in the last fifty years, promoted economic growth and created jobs (UNWTO, 2017). Nevertheless, this industry is impacting and greatly stressing natural environments and societies inciting a transformation towards a more sustainable form of tourism practices (Williams & Ponsford, 2009). The United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (UNWTO, 2016). The purpose of the declaration was to position the tourism industry as a tool to address the Universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (UNWTO, 2016). A backcasting participatory approach was used to explore the roles of the SDGs in creating future sustainable tourism destinations, using Swedish Lapland as a reference. The study uses backcasting as a method together with a literature review and semi-structured interviews to key stakeholders. The study concludes that SDGs are good parameters to describe current scenarios in order to develop desired ones. It also finds that sustainable future tourism destinations are highly connected with environment and society as part of the core experience, resecting traditions and culture. In order to achieve sustainable future destinations legislation, better practices and alternative methods of transportation need to be implemented alongside creating an experience that is based on responsibility towards nature and societies.

▼ The sport of surfing is not excluded from issues that threaten its future existence in several places in the world. Although the oceans waves as an environmental resource will prevail in all times, the coastal areas of the world are under increased pressure. The way surf
tourism has developed around several surf breaks presents a great case for how these unsustainable processes take shape. Especially in developing countries surfers have pioneered
tourism developments in remote coastal areas with little infrastructure available. The availability of perfect waves, favorable climates, low prices and cheap lands have attracted entrepreneurs to these areas. In the process of marketing the new destination and increasing
tourism infrastructure, the local communities who often live subsistence lifestyles are frequently ignored in decision making. Development occurs quite ad hoc, as it often does not take into account social and environmental capacities or waste management systems before new
tourism amenities are built. In this sense surf
tourism development can become a threat to its own survival. As unawareness to the needs of native residents generates conflict between locals and foreigners, unregulated growth creates over-exploitation of natural resources and possibly induces pollution, crime, drugs and prostitution. It also degrades the area that tourists come to visit and affects the residents that have, in the first place, settled for the economic opportunities and the tourist site’s pristine environment...

▼ For attainment sustainable tourism requires the growth of tourism‟s contribution to the economy and society as well as the sustainable use of resources and the environment. The achievement of both relies on dependable and sound understanding, appropriate development and management of the tourism demand. As demand patterns and economic structures change, no industry, and in particular no industry at the national or regional level, could or should assume that there is a constant or increasing flow of demand for its outputs and thus focus solely on resource issues (Butler, 1996). According to Elliot (1997:19) local government plays an important role in tourism, as it is only governments that have the authority to provide political stability, security and the legal and financial framework which tourism requires. Connell et al (2009) argue that one of the more important roles of local government is the development and implementation of community planning, legislation and policy. However, while tourism-related developments are usually integrated with economic development or official community plans, often there is no guiding policy framework or identified area of responsibility for tourism, which can be problematic for effective and sustainable tourism development. The effectiveness of local tourism governance in achieving the goals of sustainable tourism depends on the effectiveness of institutional structures and processes, and the rational resources and skill sets available (Healy, 2006). This study examines the arrangements of selected municipalities and the effectiveness of their local tourism governance and its relevance to sustainable tourism.

▼ This study investigated the extent of local community involvement in tourism development
and conservation activities in eastern Rwanda by using Akagera National Park as a case
study. The study used a structured questionnaire to collect data from local residents, while
face-to-face interviews were conducted with key informants from Rwanda National Tourism
and Conservation Agency and local government officials as means to obtain deeper insights.
Tosun (2000:626) contends that community involvement in tourism can be considered from at
least two viewpoints, namely the decision-making process that would involve community
participation and the benefits of tourism development such as employment and business
opportunities. Results of this research suggest that community participation in Akagera
National Park has been recognised by Rwanda National Tourism and Conservation Agency
and the government of Rwanda only in the sense of helping local people to obtain economic
benefits via employing them as workers within industry [though, still at a low rate], whilst
encouraging them to operate small scale businesses such as curio shops, rather than create
opportunities for them to have a say in the process of decision making of tourism
management and conservation policies.
Although Rwanda has opted for a decentralised system in its rural development plans, it is
evident that it has failed to do so in the areas of tourism and conservation - at least in
Akagera National Park. The researcher believes that in the light of the research results, the
decision making system for Akagera National Park tourism and conservation development
plans is still highly centralised, which, conversely, work against participatory development
approach. The study recommends that local communities in the Akagera area should be
consulted and involved in development programmes within their villages from the start, as this
process will present a significant step towards ensuring more adequate participation in
conservation and tourism. Finally, the researcher recommends that further studies should be
conducted to engage in evaluation of impacts and successes of governmental policy of 5%
revenue sharing, which should be implemented in communities around Akagera National
Park.

▼ Although much research has been conducted on sustainable tourism and the education thereof internationally, a limited number of studies have focussed on education of sustainable tourism in South African secondary schools. A literature overview identified various approaches to the education of sustainability on the international front. Despite South Africa’s reliance on the tourism industry, the concept of sustainability has received little focus in classrooms where this pertinent issue should be receiving attention in order to ensure that future sustainability is ensured in the South African tourism industry. From the literature overview it was possible to identify topics pertaining to sustainability in the Tourism Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement implemented in the Further Education and Training Phase (FET) in South African secondary schools. These assisted in the development of the research tool for this study. The New Ecological Paradigm (NEP), an instrument used to establish the level of environmental concerns of groups of people, also provided guidance in the development of the research tool. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the perceptions of Tourism educators in secondary schools towards sustainability. A framework to investigate this was developed and three hypotheses formulated. To give effect to this, an empirical investigation was conducted. Tourism educators who were successful in their application to mark 2014 National Senior Certificate Tourism examinations were included in the sample of this study. The result of the descriptive statistics performed on the data showed that the level of education of the respondents was the main contributing demographic that impacted on their perceptions of sustainable tourism. It is, however, of concern to note that a very low percentage of the respondents (6.2%) have received formal training in Tourism. This situation should be cause for concern for Tourism education in the Eastern Cape. Two of the three hypotheses were accepted. The researcher believes that specialised subject relevant training is required to empower educators to teach sustainable tourism in the South African secondary school classrooms in order to ensure future sustainability in the tourism industry of South Africa.
