▼ This project explores the opportunity of
sustainability for Royal Haskoning (RH) to enrich its business. Reason for this study are the sounds heard that
sustainability creates smaller and bigger changes in many sectors, and RH showing to be eager to aid in providing the needed technological innovation.
As an engineering consultant however, RH is not innovative in the way required for
sustainability: it is positioned at the final, highly defined stages of companies’ development processes. A first step in looking for ways to aid companies in their transition towards
sustainability is therefore redefining the relation of RH and its clients.
A research carried out among RH’s relations firstly verifies the demand for engineering knowledge in the field of
sustainability. Secondly, it defines the field in which innovation for
sustainability comes across, leading to an opportunity for the engineering consultant: Using a collaborative form of product development termed ‘open innovation’, the engineering consultant is thought to highly participate in companies’ innovation processes. That is, provided it lives up to certain game play.
This new game play suggests the engineering consultant to take up the role of a matchmaker. In a collaborative context it will develop technology that creates new links between demand and offer. The research also points at a major hurdle for engineering consultants moving to this position: their focus on short term.
A new way is suggested for Royal Haskoning as an organization to fit in the role of matchmaker by partially changing its business model to one that allows a long term approach. By setting up a separate structure termed ‘Royal Match’, RH employees are given the opportunity to develop technology in collaboration with clients and other partners. Additionally this project presents a conceptual tool design assisting employees in working with this new program.

▼ As a monastery living under the Rule of St. Benedict and as part of the 900-year-old Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (OCSO), the monks of Holy Cross Abbey (HCA) are pursuing
sustainability not only to ensure that their traditions and spiritual way of life persevere, but also to foster a deeper stewardship of the land as “lovers of the brethren and of the place.” As part of this
sustainability initiative, HCA solicited the assistance of a team of graduate students from the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment (“Michigan Team”) under the guidance of Professor Andrew Hoffman. As part of this project, the Michigan Team used a systems perspective with the intention of encouraging a more holistic, integrative, and telescopic view of the monastery in its local, regional, and global contexts. To this end, the Team evaluated HCA’s community
sustainability as it specifically applies to the following topic areas: land use, energy, water, solid waste, toxics, economies, food, and buildings. Subsequently, synergistic recommendations were provided to help HCA become more sustainable. These suggested guidelines may also assist other monasteries and religious institutions as they initiate, evaluate, and/or modify their own
sustainability efforts, thereby enhancing environmental stewardship throughout numerous communities and maximizing positive impact on society.

▼ Economic development over the last century has driven
a tripling of the world's population, a twenty-fold increase in
fossil fuel consumption, and a tripling of traditional biomass
consumption. The associated broad income and wealth inequities are
retaining over 2 billion people in poverty. Adding to this, fossil
fuel combustion is impacting the environment across spatial and
temporal scales and the cost of energy is outpacing all other
variable costs for most industries. With 60% of world energy
delivered in 2008 consumed by the commercial and industrial sector,
the fragmented and disparate energy-related decision making within
organizations are largely responsible for the inefficient and
impacting use of energy resources. The global transition towards
sustainable development will require the collective efforts of
national, regional, and local governments, institutions, the
private sector, and a well-informed public. The leadership role in
this transition could be provided by private and public sector
organizations, by way of sustainability-oriented organizations,
cultures, and infrastructure. The diversity in literature
exemplifies the developing nature of sustainability science, with
most sustainability assessment approaches and frameworks lacking
transformational characteristics, tending to focus on analytical
methods. In general, some shortfalls in sustainability assessment
processes include lack of: * thorough stakeholder participation in
systems and stakeholder mapping, * participatory envisioning of
future sustainable states, * normative aggregation of results to
provide an overall measure of sustainability, and * influence
within strategic decision-making processes. Specific to energy
sustainability assessments, while some authors aggregate results to
provide overall sustainability scores, assessments have focused
solely on energy supply scenarios, while including the deficits
discussed above. This paper presents a framework for supporting
organizational transition processes towards sustainable energy
systems, using systems and stakeholder mapping, participatory
envisioning, and sustainability assessment to prepare the
development of transition strategies towards realizing long-term
energy sustainability. The energy system at Arizona State
University's Tempe campus (ASU) in 2008 was used as a baseline to
evaluate the sustainability of the current system. From interviews
and participatory workshops, energy system stakeholders provided
information to map the current system and measure its performance.
Utilizing operationalized principles of energy sustainability,
stakeholders envisioned a future sustainable state of the energy
system, and then developed strategies to begin transition of the
current system to its potential future sustainable state. Key
findings include stakeholders recognizing that the current energy
system is unsustainable as measured against principles of energy
sustainability and an envisioned future sustainable state of the
energy system. Also, insufficient governmental stakeholder…

▼ Legitimacy is widely accepted as an important resource for an organisation, strategy, or individual to possess. However, the process of gaining legitimacy has received limited attention in the academic literature. This thesis examines the strategies and actions that individuals employ in the process of legitimising their sustainability strategy within an organisation. Based on semi-structured interviews with 51 Heads of Sustainability, the research extends the existing ‘conformance, selection, manipulation’ legitimising strategy model, becoming one of the first to demonstrate how these legitimising strategies are interrelated both concurrently and temporally. It finds that multiple legitimising strategies are used simultaneously by individuals. Moreover, a pattern emerges whereby individuals begin with conformance-only legitimising when sustainability has limited integration, but employ all three legitimising strategies where sustainability integration is extensive. In addition to this, the research articulates two specific categories of actions that are used by individuals in the process of deploying these umbrella legitimising strategies: framing and developing coalitions of support. Framing actions comprise micro-reframing, disassociation, contextualisation, analogy, and differentiation and personalisation. Developing coalitions of support actions comprise leveraging sponsorship, networking, enhancing employee engagement, and continually promoting. From this empirical research a generalised legitimising pathway is proposed which demonstrates the progression of legitimising from using conformance-only through to using all three legitimising strategies, and the actions employed by the individual in these different stages.

▼ Traditional manufacturing industry have developed a linear production path that involves resource extraction, energy usage, emissions released to air and water, and waste produced at volumes and rates that places increasing burden on the natural environment. These traditional manufacturing organizations have mostly viewed environmental activities separately from their core business operations. Today, organizations are shifting their manufacturing approach. There is a significant potential to reduce the energy use, emissions released, resource consumption and wastes produced through sustainable initiatives. Using environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) is one emerging sustainability initiative. Environmental KPIs depict the vast quantity of environmental data of a firm in a comprehensive and concise manner, applying mostly to set absolute material and energy data in relation to other variables in order to increase the informational value of quantitative data. In this thesis work, literature review and empirical study was carried out to find out the significant factors and the major challenges during the development and implementation of environmental key performance indicators (KPIs). A case study in four Swedish manufacturing companies was carried out to collect primary data which was later compared with literature review. The thesis work also highlights the management system used to implement environmental KPIs.

▼ This thesis was performed in cooperation with the Amsterdam-based
strategy-consulting firm Spring Associates. This firm is specialized in providing strategic support for a wide range of companies in financial services, new business development and
sustainability. However, Spring Associates is facing difficulties in efficiently attracting new clients in the latter segment. The firm invests a disproportionate amount of time and effort in preparing client meetings to make sure they convince the potential client of the firm’s knowledge and problem solving skills. An internal analysis revealed that this approach is not satisfactory, mainly because of the need for in-depth knowledge to determine relevant items for the specific client, and the need to increase client focus during these meetings. The aim of this thesis was to design an analysis tool that Spring Associates can strategically apply for
sustainability consulting during client meetings.
This thesis focused on the food industry as this high-impact industry directly influences our lives, economies and the environment. Many researchers studied the theoretical definition of
sustainability, its implications for the food industry, and company specific ambitions and motivational factors. It can be concluded that
sustainability has many definitions, of which the ‘Environment, Social and Governance’ dimensions abstractly explain its broad scope. The ‘life cycle approach’ identifies more concretely how
sustainability may affect each step within a product life cycle. However, the exact implications of
sustainability in different businesses, and the food industry in particular, remain ambiguous. For example, identified company drivers for sustainable development appear to be highly diverse and theoretical frameworks for implementation and integration are often too abstract to be applied in practice.
These conclusions led to the definition of research questions for further qualitative research on
sustainability in practice. A total of 14 interviews were conducted with representatives of companies in all steps of the food industry cycle. The main findings described the general top-down integration process of
sustainability within these companies, i.e. strategic incorporation is often followed by departmental implementation. Furthermore, all aspects of a company, such as growth drivers,
strategy, chain position and company type, influence their sustainable development scope. It is demonstrated that companies’ ambition,
strategy and implementation methods are important input parameters for the degree of their challenges and opportunities for further sustainable development. The study has also revealed some interesting market developments in the food industry in particular that highly affect their sustainable development processes.
The above insights were evaluated in the synthesis phase, which determined the framework for the final analysis tool design. This framework focuses on the first meeting(s) between Spring Associates and their potential client, as this meeting…

▼ Industry facilitates the economic development of nations and acquisition of human wealth. Parallel to the global spread of industry, the world is facing rapid population growth. Simultaneously, formerly impoverished populations are approaching middle class standards of living with corresponding increases in levels of consumption. If the populations and consumption levels of societies continue to grow at the expected pace we will face a future environmental crises in the long-term and the world’s environmental resources will not be adequate to meet coming needs. Societies, together with industry, must transform to become sustainable in order to tackle one of our world’s most pressing challenges.Governments and organizations are now pushing industrial companies to meet this challenge and integrate sustainability into their businesses in order to put the economy on the pathway to a sustainable transformation. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development has a vision with formulated conditions that must be met before year 2050 to meet this challenge. But in order to unlock the full potential of sustainable growth, one must also understand the farsightedness of company leaders. The aim of this study is to examine how farsighted Swedish industries are both related to business and sustainability strategies. The main questions for this thesis are: How farsighted are the longest-term strategies/tasks/visions of the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs)? How farsighted are the longest-term tasks that the CEO delegate to members of the management team? How farsighted are the longest-term sustainability strategy of the company? And finally, who in the organization is responsible for the longest-term sustainability strategy/task/vision?The thesis focuses on finding out if their farsightedness in sustainability strategies match with their other business strategies. Eight large Swedish industrial companies were investigated using interviews with their CEOs.The results show a very large difference between companies in the farsightedness measured with time-span of business strategy and sustainability strategy. The time-span of the tasks that the CEOs delegate to the management team also differ substantially between companies. Moreover, the study revealed that all of the studied companies place the ultimate responsibility for sustainability with the CEO and that the farsightedness in sustainability match with the companies’ business strategies. The research show that all eight companies do match their farsightedness in sustainability with business.

▼ Textiles for Textiles project (T4T) was established to develop a new technology that will reduce the ecological impact of the post consumer textiles. The creation of this new technology lowers the recycling time, giving the T4T partners an opportunity to do new businesses with series of products made with recycled textiles. The T4T partners have decided to introduce these products in different markets starting with the workwear industry, since it is one of the T4T partner’s expertise. Groenendijk Bedrijfsschoenen en -Kleding B.V. has ten years of experience in the workwear industry, they have establish its own factory and have a personal concern in sustainable issues.
Dealing with sustainable products offers a series of challenges that have been studied and documented in literature research. The lack of motivation, the mistrust in the sustainable claims, the green brand-wash and lack of sustainable knowledge are some of the judgments that the recycled workwear will need to overcome. It is indispensable to understand Groenendijk customer’s motivations, since it is this motivation what allows them to comply with their client’s requirements. Workwear customers have the priorities like pricing, integrated services, supplier trustworthiness and
sustainability, when is affordable and have confirmation of claims. The sustainable intentions vary according to the company’s public image and their manager’s personal commitment with the environmental causes.
In general, the sustainable textile market is saturated with different variations of products that have no tangible manifestation of its sustainable origin. To distinguish the product advantages in the eco-products it is necessary to have an extensive knowledge of the ecological impact of the textile processes. Hence, to provide the general customers a precise purchase incentive, it is required to communicate tangible advantages of the recycled workwear.
With a new brand, the T4T project and Groenendijk would give their potential customers all the information necessary to understand, adopt, commercialize and buy recycled products. Furthermore, it also provides businesses and users with incentives that will generate brand awareness and loyalty, hoping that in the future everybody will develop a sustainable textile consciousness.

▼ The influence of corporate culture on the strategies used
by firms to meet the environmental
sustainability challenge has
been explored in this dissertation. This was investigated through
web-based questionnaires that were administered to employees in
companies who would have knowledge of both their employer‟s
corporate culture and corporate
sustainability practices.To
determine this, the respondents were requested to rate both the
corporate strategies undertaken to meet the environmental
challenge, as well as the corporate culture where they work. The
corporate strategies were evaluated using a bespoke instrument
which was constructed from various
strategy instruments found in
the literature. The corporate culture was evaluated using a
well-known organisational culture instrument available in the
literature. Potential contextual variables pertaining to the
perceptions of the respondents, as well as to the business and
industry sector characteristics, were evaluated as well. The
findings indicated that the contextual variables had little or no
effect on either the corporate culture or the corporate strategies
undertaken by the firm, and that a strong comprehensive culture
correlated strongly with positive corporate strategies. Corporate
cultures that emphasise social coordination (or organic culture
forms) exhibited stronger correlations with positive corporate
strategies than those which emphasise formal control methods (or
mechanistic forms). The focus of the firm, whether on internal
dynamics or the external environment, did not show a significant
effect on the corporate strategies that were undertaken by the
firm.A
sustainability culture was synthesised from the findings of
the research, which concludes with recommendations regarding
further research into this topic.

▼ Abstract The results of the supposed man-made climate change have lead to a concern for the environment that is affecting how businesses operate. Businesses are facing greater pressure from stakeholders and government regulations to take more responsibility and care for the environment. Thus companies are facing a wide spectrum of new problems, but also new opportunities. In facing these problems companies must react to how the world is changing and to integrate environmental concerns into the vision and company strategy to become a more environmentally friendly and thus greener company. An issue pressing is how to maintain sustainability for the environment as well as pursuing to be a sustainable company facing the threats of today and the future to come due to climate change. Important aspects a company must take into consideration in order to go green are: sustainability, company strategy, government regulations, internal processes and policies, corporate social responsibility and how to form a corporate culture as these are all parts of how a company changes into focusing on becoming greener and thus more environmentally friendly. This study brings forth the actions and reactions of three companies perceived as pioneers towards becoming greener in their respective industries. During the course of mapping out how a company goes green, an analytical model has been created with the help of already existing and accepted theoretical frameworks. The purpose of the model is to create structure and consistency to map out what important steps the company has taken to become greener. A qualitative method of research has been applied. Three respondents active in various fields, all with environmental connections, from Wilhelm Wilhelmsen (WW), Statkraft and Statoil has been interviewed with questions concerning their work towards sustainability and a green vision within the company. The analysis is based on relevant theories combined with the empirical data collected. What stands out in the conclusions is that the companies researched have taken different important steps when becoming greener and working to achieve sustainability. The differences can be illustrated in the own-developed model. The model is applied to crystallize what dimensions in the companies that are affected. Factors such as government regulations and how internal processes and policies are changed are standing out as examples of how a company’s dimensions are affected differently depending on the respective company’s strategy and business model.

▼ This graduation assignment was assigned by Peeters Produkten BV, a firm that is known for its expertise in producing chocolate spreads of which ‘Duo Penotti’ is the most renowned.
Though first steps have been taken, the firm’s approach to tackle
sustainability issues is not yet on strategic level. Hence, the task was given to come up with a
strategy to incorporate sustainable practices into the firm’s conduct of business. Consequently, the report can be described as the result of a study that investigates various aspects influencing the
strategy and the manner in which Peeters Produkten BV should aim for corporate
sustainability:
Corporate
sustainability refers to the business approach in which a corporation’s embedded sustainable practices are consistent with its organisational culture and corporate
strategy. As Peeters Produkten BV is competing in the FMCG industry, the firm is dealing with fast shifting market developments and a range of stakeholders. These parties, like the Dutch government, the industry, NGOs and consumers all have their opinions and demands on how businesses should react on
sustainability issues. So, in setting the
strategy for corporate
sustainability these views must be taken into account next to the CEO’s motivations and ambitions and the firm’s capabilities.
A
strategy is always about making choices; firms are not responsible for all of the world’s problems, nor have the capabilities to solve them all. Thus, Peeters Produkten BV should prioritise and identify few opportunities within its value chain that are most likely to contribute to a better environment (planet) and society (people) and bring value to the firm itself by efficiently using the resources available.
For Peeters Produkten BV the core activities are the following:
1. creating a sustainable culture and code of conduct
2. procurement of sustainable ingredients by setting supplier policies
3. sustainable logistics as the firm is facing both in- and outbound logistics, regarding the firm’s largest impact on the environment
4. buying in renewable energy as it is a very feasible solution to contribute in reduction of the firm’s impact caused by its large electricity use
Of course, the firm should always report on and monitor its progress on its approach to alter, improve and increase the amount of sustainable activities.
Finally, a case study was conducted on one the firm’s products: Duo Penotti Dippi. Due to the product’s poor performance consumer research must first be conducted. Research’ results must then be guiding in the decision on what to do with Dippi; divestiture, incremental- or redical innovation. Nevertheless, in any resulting decision the firms’
strategy for
sustainability must be taken into account.

▼ Introduction
The central question in this report is: How can Bruynzeel successfully integrate
sustainability in its business?
Sustainability is generally getting more attention and Bruynzeel’s customers (DIY-chains and expert-dealers) sometimes take inventory of sustainable products or start other sustainable initiatives. Bruynzeel now wants to know how
sustainability can be integrated in their business so it can contribute to the company’s results. Integrating
sustainability should lead to positive results rather than lead to losses. Three research subjects have been the foundation for composing an advice:
sustainability, Bruynzeel and the context of Bruynzeel.
Sustainability
What is
sustainability? The most used interpretation of sustainable development is that from the Brundtlandt commission (1987): a “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This general definition needs an interpretation for Bruynzeel. Bruynzeel must realize that
sustainability is not an attached
subject to the company and is time consuming and loss-making.
Sustainability is a balance between people, planet and profit. Profit can only be realized on the condition of people and planet. The balance requires a full integration of
sustainability, only than can
sustainability contribute to profits. Concerning sustainable results, sustainable development should be regarded as making small steps in the right direction that are relative improvements of a certain situation.
Sustainability implementation programs have to be tailor-made for each company and each situation, there is no general solution or
strategy on how to implement
sustainability successfully. It is a combination of the right elements and circumstances.
First Bruynzeel need to be clear and of the same mind on the motivation why
sustainability has to be integrated. That is a determining factor in finding the right content but also in being successful with
sustainability. Than, it must become clear what the steps are that Bruynzeel makes if it applies
sustainability. The combination of the SWOT-elements form the basis for a
strategy in which
sustainability adds value to the company.
Bruynzeel
The strongest points of Bruynzeel are: its brand name, the expertise in developing and selling quality sanitary and fly-screen products and long relationships with DIY-chains.
Its weakest points are an illogical product portfolio, a too little brand awareness of Bruynzeel as a sanitary brand and the lack of formal innovation and product development processes.
A research to the motivations for
sustainability reveals that there is no agreement at this moment on an ambition level for
sustainability. The main drawbacks are priority and the business perspectives of
sustainability. The drawbacks are the result of a wrong interpretation of
sustainability. The
strategy should respond to these counter arguments and reveal a right interpretation of
sustainability.
Context
Bruynzeel possesses a modest position in its…

▼ Over the last three years, the organisations activities have expanded along with its growth. Comparing literature to insights has led us to conclude that De Groene Zaak should increase strategic focus. By assessing core values, strengths and weaknesses, success factors for societal influence, trends and the market we developed a new organizational
strategy. We suggest De Groene Zaak to become a business accelerator, by brokering between ventures and large firms. In providing post-startups with the means to scale, De Groene Zaak directly contributes to advancing the
sustainability of the economy.

Over time, companies usually experience some fluctuations in their performance, which may be more or less aggravated. There are also cases in which this performance remains stable. Their performance is affected by various factors, some intrinsic to the companies, while others are external to them. This means that there are competitive advantages that companies can manage, more or less directly, whilst others are beyond their control. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the various factors that contribute to the maintenance of the performance of some companies. These are the Steady Moderate Performers among enterprises in a certain market. To understand how the organizations in this field of study maintained their level of performance, it is necessary to determine how top management and strategy impact the sustainability of that very same performance, to identify the competitive advantages that companies rely on, how they optimize their internal structure or manage their assets, as well as to identify how they reinforce their attributes and act in the market in which they operate.

▼ The primary purpose of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of the motivations that lead companies to engage in CSR reporting practices and to explore how such practices differ among industries within Sweden. Furthermore, the study attempts to explain the phenomena from the perspective of stakeholder theory. To do so, the study adopts a semi-structured qualitative interview with four Swedish companies which are currently reporting CSR performance and four companies which are not reporting CSR performance in four industrial categories. The companies selected in the study were asked to explain what made them decide to issue CSR reports or do not.The results show that the most important motivating factors are increasing shareholder value and reputation management by means of CSR reporting. The motivations in CSR reporting of different industrial sectors in Sweden are found similar to the cases of the previous research except for environmentally-sensitive industry. When companies in this industry decide to start reporting they do so to be perceived as environmentally-responsible to a broad set of stakeholders. In the next step, companies recognize that it can be important to a more narrow range of stakeholders such as institutional investors. When applying a stakeholder strategy matrix, two industry groups − environmentally sensitive industry and corporate governance-issues-sensitive industry show that the practice of CSR reporting is to communicate with traditional stakeholders, specifically, the shareholders, not with multi-stakeholders. This means that motivations for companies to engage in CSR reporting are led by diversified interests of traditional stakeholders rather than diversified types of stakeholders (Freeman, 1984). On the other hand, the supply chain issues-sensitive industry employs CSR reports as a mean of defending potential risks so as to manage the relationship with multi-stakeholders. In an ethical issues-sensitive industry, a more important factor considers incorporating sustainability to be beneficial to business which indicates taking care of traditional stakeholders.

▼ Since the late 20th century, people extended to over-consume and over-discharge all kinds of resources and made the resources decreased hugely. The resources in the earth are not unlimited. Emissions and pollutions brought human all kinds of crisis. Social-trended management becomes the main stream of business operation in the 21st century, and it is not countable for the corporations that were incapable to follow this change. The awake of limit of the Earth resources had made the corporations start to respect the importance of resource reclamations as well as resource application, which means, in the recycle society, they started to create the new economical added-value of resources by 3R: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Now, more and more corporations are awaken of the damages environment pollution made to humans, and this is not a ignorable power. To research how the corporations combine their management strategies with the concepts of keeping a sustainable environment is the main target of this study.
How do the corporations set up their management strategies by keeping the environment sustainable? In this study, we will discuss this topic by 3 dimensions and procedures:
1ã Influences on business management made by the direct and indirect benefit parties of the corporations.
2ã The Corporationsâ application of Green Management brings the corporations themselves more Green Values.
3ã Use the past capability to develop a dynamic ability and create a competitive advantage of the corporation.
Normal corporations emphasize on the development of single
strategy, and ignore how to set up ãstrategic agendasã and ãstrategic targetã, and plenty of them are lack of thoughts of integration. According to the point of resource-based view, each corporation shall understand its own value, its special property and its un-imitate resources to create its advantage. In the quick-varying environment, the corporations shall own its ability to increase its advantages by using the point of view of resources to develop a dynamic ability and create its continuing competitive advantage.
This study takes 7 corporations which execute sustainable environment effectively in Taiwan by preceding a Qualitative Research, interview and collect every kind of documents and news, to analyze each of their Green Strategies.

▼ Despite an increase in worldwide research on the relationship between ports and their regions, studies have mainly centred on hub ports or major container ports and less attention has been paid to regional ports in the national context. In this thesis, regional ports are defined as ports located outside metropolitan cities, which facilitate regional trade and serve regional producers and businesses. Australian regional ports perform approximately 85% of the national freight task, and have immense strategic potential for regional development. Despite the symbiotic relationship between regional ports and their host regions this area has not been widely researched. This thesis explores strategies for Australian regional ports to make an effective contribution to regional development. This study has adopted a mixed methods research methodology, consisting of semi-structured telephone interviews in the qualitative strand, and a web-based survey in the quantitative strand. The outcome of the telephone interviews led to the development of a conceptual model for Australian regional ports’ contribution to regional development, consisting of three major themes: port sustainability, building on collaborative advantages and active participation of ports in a regional innovation system. Subsequently, an instrument was developed to conduct a web-based survey in the quantitative strand. The empirical results from the survey revealed four pertinent factors with their corresponding strategic initiatives important for Australian regional ports’ involvement in regional development. These factors were ports being interactive and entrepreneurial in the regional innovation system (RIS), collaboration for supply chain efficiency, collaboration with other regional organisations, and ports being proactive for environmental challenges and social responsibility. Pulling together the findings from both strands, the research advocates a place based approach for Australian regional ports to be effectively involved in regional development. This approach is inclusive and collaborative and addresses the issues involved in generating greater policy benefits for a specific place. The place based approach significantly relates to the research findings where systematic regional resource utilisation is important. Academically, the research contributes to revealing the geo-dimensional role (regional enabler) of ports in regional development. It highlights the ways in which ports can actively engage in regional resource configuration efforts with other regional organisations in an interactive, innovative and entrepreneurial way. The findings also have implications for port management, by producing a place oriented port matrix consisting of economic, social, environmental and spatial dimensions for effective regional development involvement; by generating a set of relevant indicators for performance monitoring and reporting; and by gradually introducing a new type of port planning which focuses on collaboration, innovation, and regional resource…

Background:The concept of sustainability has gained increasing relevance. In thebanking world, it is not a matter of if, but how a company should work with sustainability. To achieve sustainability it is important to understand how a strategy must be implemented, constantly developed and controlled for the results to follow in accordance with the strategic objectives.Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify Swedbank's on going work with its sustainability strategy and describe the factors which have affected the control to increase knowledge of how a large financial services company work with sustainability in order to achieve strategic objectives. Methodology: To achieve the purpose, we have worked from a deductive approach where theory provided the framework for empirical data collection. Semi- structured qualitative interviews were conducted with representatives from various levels of the case study company, Swedbank, and these formed the basis of the empirical material. Findings: We conclude that the factors that are most important for service organizations in the continuous control of sustainability are: a strong culture which is based on values rooted in sustainability, a clear communication, organizational structure that encourages responsibility and leadership that include employees in decision making.

profissional. Como resultado, designers continuam desenvolvendo
produtos ineficientes, embora estejam sensibilizados para a crise
ambiental.
No momento
less impactant to the environment, however, its use by project
professionals in Brazil is minimum, because most of them do not fit
this professional working method. As a result, designers keep
developing inefficient products, although they are sensible to the
environmental crisis. In this thesis, a tool was developed to
support the designer professional in the eco efficient products
project, to fit in the Brazilian designer needs. So, a research
among designers was done so as to know their necessities of the
environmental information, working method and the relation with the
Ecodesign tools. Next, some existing tools were chosen, in order to
understand their organization and application in the design of the
products. Then, environmental information applicable in the project
of the product were compiled, as well as organized in strategies
and guidelines. With these groups of information, a prototype of
this tool was developed. At last, this prototype was validated in
real and simulated situations, by designers from a group that, in
the research, was identified as the one who mostly needed the tool.
As a result, the formatting in guidelines is appropriate, and that
designers are able to develop products less impactants to the
environment in case they receive appropriate tools to the working
method.

▼ The enterprise
strategy (ES) of the firm is the overarching organizational
strategy which reflects the firm's degree of integration with society. It asks, "What do we stand for?" Very little is known about the ES; however, it is an important construct which can deepen our understanding of the stakeholder management process and the firm's long-term performance. Unlike much previous ES research, this three-essay dissertation examines both the nature of and the antecedents for ES in a cross-national setting.
The introductory essay offers a conceptual model describing the organizational identity orientation effects on the multinational enterprise's (MNE) ES. Additionally, it shows the interactive effects between the organizational identity orientation and the institutional identity orientation on the ES.
The second essay utilizes the two theoretically-suggested dimensions of the ES—
scope and
type—to develop an ES measure. A computer-aided text analysis of 439 stakeholder letters of multinational and US firms revealed the presence of ES language. A reliable and valid ES measure was then constructed. A subsequent analysis produced ES configurations which broadly align with the four ideal ES types of Meznar, Chrisman, and Carroll (1991)—Narrow Defensive, Narrow Offensive, Broad Defensive and Broad Offensive.
This research is extended in a third essay examining the impact of the diversity in the MNE's environment on the ES. Using a multi-level analysis, this study first explores the effects of the top management team's (TMT) and the board of directors' (BOD) gender diversity, the TMT functional diversity, and the BOD's stakeholder representation on the levels of the ES integration of 287 MNEs from 30 countries in 2011. The moderating effects on the above relationships emerging from the political culture of an MNE's home country are also tested. According to the findings, gender diversity in the upper echelons positively influences the level of ES integration. This relationship is moderated by the political culture of the home country. The BOD stakeholder representation also positively influences the level of ES integration, but this relationship is not influenced by the MNE's home-country political culture. Finally, the relationship between the top management team functional diversity and the dependent variable is not significant.

▼ This thesis is a study of organizational eco-sustainability policy and strategy adoption and implementation, how can it be measured and what influences it. The McKinsey Seven S’s (7S’s) Framework is used as a foundation for the development of an evaluation metric, the Organizational Eco-Sustainability Index (OESI). The OESI is then used in this research to numerically assess and then compare the extent of eco-sustainability practices adoption by Australian companies publicly listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Top 200. In Phase 1 of the research, data was collected through document and content analysis of sustainability and/or annual reports of 200 public listed companies on the ASX. 84 companies from significant carbon emitter industry groups: materials, real estate and transportation and from the banking group were then sampled for detailed analysis. A set of metrics (OESI) with 139 criteria derived from the existing research and business literatures, was developed based on an existing risk assessment model and then applied to 15 of the 84 companies. An analysis of the application of the OESI showed that the metric could consistently differentiate the extent of adoption of eco-sustainability policy between companies in one industry, between all companies collectively, between industries and between companies over a 5-year period. The OESI shows that the extent of the adoption of eco-sustainability policy and strategy is different across the four sampled industry groups. And, the banking industry has generally been more active in eco-sustainability practice, compared to other industries in this study. In Phase 2, interviews with senior executives, responsible for their organization’s sustainability confirmed the validity of the dimensions used and the efficacy of the OESI. The OESI provides a snapshot of the company’s current eco-sustainability position and enables them to compare their position relative to their peers in the same and/or across industries. The conclusion from their evaluation of the OESI was that the metric provides the companies with an opportunity to reflect and reassess what dimensions are important for their organization, so that they understand where effort is needed, what resources are required and ultimately, where the degree of difficulty in managing eco-sustainability policy and reporting is to get the desired results and create significant positive impacts, environmentally and economically. The results of a regression analysis in Phase 3 showed that the relationship between the 7 dimensions of the OESI and the dependent variables measuring eco-sustainability were significant, suggesting that the OESI had some predictive value for companies. However, there were no measurable or significant relations between the OESI and business performance, measured by market capitalization, average share return and earnings per share over two consecutive fiscal years (2010-11 and 2011-12). Finally the research revisited the dimensions of the OESI to re-consider and re-assess…

sustainability strategy. It examines more specifically four main research questions: (i) to what extent the eco-control systems may support the corporate
