▼ This study describes the gross anatomical, histological and surface morphological features of the oropharynx and proximal oesophagus of the emu in order to address the scarcity of information on this region in this commercially important bird. Heads obtained from birds at slaughter (and a younger and older bird from emergency farm slaughter) were used for this study and described using basic gross anatomical and histological techniques, supplemented by scanning electron microscopy. The findings of the study were compared with the relevant literature. The oral and pharyngeal cavities could not be morphologically separated and formed a single cavity. This cavity was dorso-ventrally flattened and clearly divided, both on the floor and the roof, into rostral pigmented and caudal non-pigmented parts. The non-pigmented floor housed the tongue and laryngeal mound which had a wide glottis and no papillae. The choana was triangular-shaped, with a small caudo-lateral fold on either side, and was situated in the nonpigmented part of the roof. Caudal to the choana were two rounded pharyngeal folds with a pitted ventral surface. A small bilateral projection from the caudo-lateral edge consisted mainly of diffuse lymphoid tissue. The pharyngeal folds contained numerous large simple branched tubular mucus-secreting glands as well as large accumulations of lymphoid tissue. The pigmented regions of the roof and floor were aglandular and lined by a keratinised stratified squamous epithelium which, particularly in the roof, contained numerous Herbst corpuscles in the underlying connective tissue. SEM revealed the surface to be composed of sheets of desquamating flattened polygonal cells. The non-pigmented regions were glandular and lined by a non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium. Surface cells displayed a pattern of microplicae or microvilli while individual surface cells were seen to desquamate. The connective tissue housed small, simple tubular and large, simple branched tubular mucus-secreting glands, Herbst corpuscles (only absent from the pharyngeal folds and proximal oesophagus), lymphoid tissue, blood vessels and nerves. The glands of the upper digestive tract were polystomatic and named as follows according to their location: Caudal intermandibular, lingual, crico-arytenoid, oral angular, caudal palatine, pharyngeal and oesophageal. The openings of the glands to the surface were seen on SEM as variably sized holes on the surface, some being obscured by mucus secretions from the underlying glands. Taste receptors were sparse and present only in the caudal non-pigmented oropharyngeal floor, tongue root and proximal oesophagus. Accumulations of lymphoid tissue were identified at the junction between the two regions of the roof, and in the non-pigmented roof, the non-pigmented floor, tongue ventrum, root and frenulum, proximal oesophagus and pharyngeal folds. The consistent dense accumulation of lymphoid tissue in the pharyngeal folds constituted pharyngeal tonsils (Lymphonoduli pharyngeales). ▼ This work examines the potential of spaceborne microwave remote sensing for the discrimination and analysis of morphological and surface cover-features in semi-arid Tunisia. The study area in central Tunisia comprises a region of overlap between two satellite radar passes: namely Seasat and SIR-A. This allows the influence of two different radar depression angles, look directions and resolutions upon image appearance to be determined. Botn these systems operated at a wavelength of 23cm and hence the characteristic responses of semi-arid surfaces at this wavelength are assessed. This is achieved through visual and digital image interpretation and discriminant analysis of image data. As SIR-A data is available only in optical format, the image had to be digitised before digital image processing could be undertaken. Several radiometric and geometric pre-processing procedures have to be accomplished. Despite the time-lag and calibration difficulties involved, the dominant ground controls on radar backscatter are identified through statistical analysis of information collected in the field. Surface relief, feature geometry and surface roughness are the most important parameters for both systems. The difference in depression angle causes relief information to dominate the Seasat image, while roughness information dominates the SIR-A image. The availability of Landsat Thematic Mapper data for part of the SIR-A swath west of the coastal study area provides a valuable opportunity to assess the complementary nature of data from the visible, infra-red and microwave parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is examined through digital and statistical analysis of image data. In the mountain environments, slope angle and aspect are found to be the dominant parameters influencing SIR-A backscatter through their effect on local radar incidence angle. The special quality of radar is its sensitivity to relief and roughness information. This is exploited in a number of applied studies that assess the contributions of radar to environmental management in semi-arid areas. Finally, recommendations are made for future research in the light of the multi-parameter radar systems due to be launched in the 1990s.

▼ This thesis describes the formation of and applications of self-assembled structures on metals. Primarily the focus of this PhD project is on the formation of surfaces structures on stainless steel (AISI 304) but other metals have been studied. Laser generated surface structures have been applied to the modification of wettability and reflectivity with a view towards developing these processes for industrial applications. Compared to conventional techniques for the modification of wettabililty, lasers offer the advantage of being a relatively simple technique for the modification of surface structure, reducing the need for complex processes. It is hoped that investigations into the reduction of surface reflectivity will have applications in the conversion of solar energy into useable power in the form of solar thermal energy. The production of self assembled structures is demonstrated using diode pumped solid state (DPSS) Nd:YVO4 lasers operating at wavelengths of 532 and 1064 nm. It is shown that the production of surface microstructures is highly dependant on the correct laser fluence and requires multiple pulses and processing passes. At 1064 nm wavelengths, it has been found highly reproducible surface structures can be formed by carefully controlling laser fluence and scanning speed while keeping the optical arrangement relatively simple. In addition to microstructure formation, the use of ultrafast femtosecond lasers, operating at 400 and 800 nm wavelengths has verified the production of laser induced periodic surface structures. Additionally, the stationary method used to produce these surfaces has been adapted to cover large surface areas with sub wavelength ripple structures with periods of ~295nm and 600nm. Applications of laser surface microstructures on metals have been studied in an effort to produce hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces on metals. It has been found that the roughness change produced by laser processing induces composite wetting when water droplets are introduced to the surface. Contact angle measurements and small angle XRD analysis of laser processed stainless steel (AISI 304) have shown that surface wettability decreased over a period of approximately one month, leading to steady contact angles of over 140°. This is attributed to the formation of a magnetite (Fe3O4) oxide layer in the period after laser processing. The effect of surface microstructure on surface reflectivity has also been studied. It was found that laser induced surface microstructures on copper can decrease surface reflectivity by almost 90%. A comparative study of the effects of surface roughness and chemistry on the optical absorption of copper is given, finding that these surfaces are competitive with contemporary coatings.

▼ Scandate cathodes, where scandia is added to the tungsten cathode pellets, have recently received substantial and renewed research interest owing to significantly improved electron emission capabilities at lower temperatures, as compared with conventional dispenser cathodes. However, there are several persistent issues including non-uniform electron emission, lack of understanding regarding scandium’s role in the emission mechanism, and unreliable reproducibility in terms of scandate cathode fabrication. As a result, scandate cathodes have not yet been widely implemented in actual vacuum electron devices (VEDs). The surface structure and chemical composition of multiple scandate cathodes – prepared with the powder using the liquid-solid (L-S) technique – and exhibiting excellent emission behavior were characterized to give insight into the fundamental mechanism(s) of operation. This was achieved with high-resolution electron microscopy techniques that include high-precision specimen lift-out. These studies showed that the micron-sized tungsten particles that compose the largest fraction of the cathode body are highly faceted and decorated with nanoscale Ba/BaO (~10 nm), as well as larger (~150 nm) Sc2O3 and BaAl2O4 particles. The experimentally identified facets were confirmed through Wulff analysis of the tungsten crystal shape and were determined to consist of {110}, {100}, and {112} facets, in increasing order of surface area prevalence. Furthermore, it is estimated that Ba atoms decorating the tungsten crystal surfaces are present in quantities such that monolayer coverage is possible at elevated temperatures. The high-resolution electron microscopy techniques used to investigate the cross section (near-surface) of the L-S scandate cathodes also revealed that the BaAl2O4 particles (100-500 nm) that attach to the larger tungsten particles are either adjacent to the smaller Sc2O3 nanoparticles or encompass them. Furthermore, high-resolution chemical analysis and 3D elemental tomography show that the two oxides always appear to be physically distinct from each other, despite their close proximity. 3D elemental tomography also showed that the Sc2O3 particles can sometimes appear inside the larger tungsten particles, but are inhomogeneously distributed. Nanobeam electron diffraction confirmed that the crystal structure of the tungsten particles are body-centered cubic, and imply that the structure remains unchanged despite the numerous complex chemical reactions that take place throughout the impregnation and activation procedures. The role of Sc and the emission mechanism for scandate cathodes are discussed. Based on characterization results and materials computation, the role of Sc in scandate cathodes is possibly related to tuning the partial pressure of oxygen in order to establish an oxygen-poor atmosphere around the cathode surface, which is a necessary condition for the formation of the (near) equilibrium tungsten shape. ▼ The design of structural joints is one of the critical challenges for the development of composite lightweight aircraft and motorsport structures. Despite the universal reliance upon mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding, the disadvantages of both when applied to high stiffness composites are considerable. For bolting and riveting these include added weight as laminates are thickened to account for stress concentrations. For bonding these include chemical uncertainties of the bonding process, inability to inspect for adhesive application quality and vulnerability to catastrophic failure. These concerns stimulated the drive for the development of new hybrid metal/composite joints which combine onlythe advantages of adhesive bonding and of mechanical interlocking by means of the pin-locking concept. This research project investigated the performance of several hybrid joint configurations obtained with the permutations of two different plate designs (double-scarf and double-stepped) and two surface feature shapes (spike and “shark teeth” pins). Tensile mechanical performance testing using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique was carried on to examine the influence of the metal fitting geometry on the joint performance and strain distribution. The pins were manufactured using the processes of micro-machining (MM) and electron beam melting (EBM). The experimental results show a progressive pin failure advancing from the end of the overlap. Both surface features provide an increase in mechanical performance of the joint. Pin geometry such as the diameter, base width, length and shape critically affect the strength of the joint. The highest values of tensile strength are obtained with shark teeth pins which cause a severe reduction in stress concentration at the joint overlap edges and provide a more even strain distribution across the joining area increasing the joint strength. The plate design affects the strain distribution at high loads and can be modified so as to reduce the peel stress. The manufacturing process (EBM or MM) does not affect joint strength significantly (for spike pins) and the process choice can be made on economic grounds. The results provide a strong basis for more detailed stepped lap joint optimisation using tailored surface features designs to assist with the provision of robust, safe, very high strength and weight optimised joints.

▼ To observe the dynamics of depression focused recharge (DFR) and the effects of seasonality related to transient surface water features, a field scale experiment was designed and conducted within glacial terrain in southern Ontario. The site selected for this case study is located in Mannheim, Ontario, on a property adjacent to a public supply well and a perennial stream known as Alder Creek. The site is characterized by hummocky topography and localized closed depression features. During hydrologic events, surface runoff collects in one of the closed depressions located near Alder Creek and the public supply well forming a transient surface water feature and causing DFR. Detailed subsurface characterization was completed to support the hydrogeologic conceptual model and three vertical instrument clusters were installed to observe groundwater recharge. Vertical instrument clusters include arrays of monitoring wells, surface water pressure transducers, neutron probe access tubes, arrays of time domain reflectometry sensors, and arrays of temperature sensors, which were installed along a transect perpendicular to Alder Creek through the closed depression. The clusters were positioned adjacent to the stream, in the center of the closed depression and in agricultural land up hill of the closed depression area in order to observe recharge processes and groundwater surface water interaction in these different settings. As part of the experiment, the site was instrumented with a meteorology station, water quality samples were collected, and direct soil samples were retrieved during hydrologic events. Two major meteorological events were selected in the scope of this study: November snow melt and rainfall event in 2014 (the November Event including 80 mm of precipitation), and the spring melt and rainfall event in 2015 (the Spring Melt Event including 110 mm of precipitation). Both events were caused by a similar magnitude of combined snow melt and rainfall. The two events provide the opportunity to contrast unfrozen soil conditions during the November Event with the presence of frost (35 cm) in the shallow soils during the Spring Melt Event. The two events also contrast in intensity; the November Event lasted 1.8 days and the Spring Melt Event took place over 35 days. Observations of recharge dynamics and their implications were made during the two events. During the November Event, DFR and recharge from Alder Creek occurred rapidly, causing the water table to rise to the ground surface. During this time period, surface water was observed to infiltrate rapidly, and depending on the microbial composition of the surface waters, the recharge could potentially be carrying pathogens into the shallow aquifer. This provides a case study of the potential risk of contamination by a transient surface water feature resulting in DFR, adjacent to a public supply well. ▼ Semantic interoperability (SI) of a product model refers to automatic exchange of meaning associated with the product data, among applications/domains throughout the product development cycle. In the product development cycle, several applications (engineering design, industrial design, manufacturing, supply chain, marketing, maintenance etc.) and different engineering domains (mechanical, electrical, electronic etc.) come into play making the ability to exchange product data with semantics very significant. With product development happening in multiple locations with multiple tools/systems, SI between these systems/domains becomes important. The thesis presents a feature-based framework for shape model to address these SI issues when exchanging shape models. Problem of exchanging semantics associated with shape model to support the product lifecycle has been identified and explained. Different types of semantic interoperability issues pertaining to the shape model have been identified and classified. Features in a shape model can be associated with volume addition/subtraction to/from base-solid, deformation/modification of base-sheet/base surface, forming of material of constant thickness. The DIFF model has been extended to represent, classify and extract Free-Form Surface Features (FFSFs) and deformation features in a part model. FFSFs refer to features that modify a free-form surface. Deformation features are created in constant thickness part models, for example, deformation of material (as in sheet-metal parts) or forming of material (as in injection molded parts with constant thickness), also referred to as constant thickness features. Volumetric features covered in the DIFF model have been extended to classify and represent volumetric features based on relative variations of cross-section and PathCurve. Shape feature ontology is described based on unified feature taxonomy with definitions and labels of features as defined in the extended DIFF model. Features definitions are used as intermediate and unambiguous representation for shape features. The feature ontology is used to capture semantics of shape features. The proposed ontology enables reasoning to handle semantic equivalences between feature labels, and is used to map shape features from a source to target applications. Reasoning framework for identification of semantically equivalent feature labels and representations for the feature being exchanged across multiple applications is presented and discussed. This reasoning framework is used to associate multiple construction paths for a feature and associate applicable meanings from the ontology. Interface is provided to select feature label for a target application from the list of labels which are semantically equivalent for the feature being exchanged/mapped. Parameters for the selected feature label can be mapped from the DIFF representation; the feature can then be represented/constructed in the target application using the feature label and mapped parameters. La dynamique granulaire amenant à l'état critique présente un intérêt dans la compréhension de la déstabilisation menant à l'avalanche. Son étude permet d'avoir des pistes de compréhension sur des mécanismes plus complexes telles les catastrophes géophysiques (séismes, glissements de terrain, éboulements). Ainsi, lorsqu'un milieu granulaire tridimensionnel sous gravité est quasi-statiquement incliné, des précurseurs sont observés à partir d'une dizaine de degrés avant l'avalanche. Ces précurseurs correspondent à des réarrangements collectifs de grains observés à la surface qui apparaissent pseudo-périodiquement avec l'angle d'inclinaison. Cette thèse fournit une caractérisation expérimentale des précurseurs détectés à la surface par méthode optique et dans le volume par méthodes acoustiques (linéaire et non linéaire). Tout d'abord, de bonnes corrélations sont trouvées entre les réarrangements à la surface et dans le volume. Dans un second temps, l'étude est poursuivie avec une liste non exhaustive de paramètres influant sur les propriétés des précurseurs. L'état de surface des grains est crucial pour la dynamique des précurseurs. Puis, une tentative de description de la déstabilisation est réalisée avec notamment la mesure de la variation des paramètres élastiques. Les précurseurs d'avalanches correspondent à des pertes successives de rigidité du système, suivies du renforcement de ce dernier.

The granular dynamics leading to the avalanche is of interest in understanding the destabilization conducting to one. Its study implies a good train of throught in the understanding of more complex mechanisms such as geophysical disasters (earthquakes, landslides, rockslides). Thus, when a three-dimensional granular medium under gravity is quasi-statically tilted, precursors are observed from the tilt of ten degrees before the avalanche. These precursors correspond to collective rearrangements of grains observed on the free surface which appear pseudo-periodically with the angle of inclination. In order to understand this phenomenon, the thesis presents an experimental characterisation of the precursors detected on the surface by optical method and in the bulk by acoustic methods (linear and nonlinear). Firstly, good correlations were found between the surface and bulk rearrangements which led to extending the study with a non-exhaustive list of parameters affecting the precursors properties. The surface features of the grains have appeared to be particularly crucial in the precursors dynamics. Finally, an attempt at a description of the destabilization is approached with the measurement of the variation of the elastic parameters revealing that precursors of avalanches correspond to successive loss of rigidity of the system, followed by hardening of the latter.

▼ Understanding of the shape and size of different features of human body from the scanned data is necessary for automated design and evaluation of product ergonomics. The traditional method of ﬁnding required body dimensions by manual measurements (Anthropometry) has many sociological, logistical and technical drawbacks such as prolonged time, skilled researcher for consistency and accuracy of measurements, undesirable physical contact between the subject and the researcher, required presence of people from different demographic categories or travel of researcher with equipments. If these di- mensions are extracted from the stored digital human models, above drawbacks can be eliminated. With the emergence of laser based 3d scanners, it is now possible generate a large database of surface models of humans from different demographic backgrounds but the automatic processing of 3d meshes is under development. Though some commercial packages are available for extraction of a limited number of dimensions from full body scans, mostly belonging to topologically separable body parts like hands and legs, the dimensions associated with head and face are particularly not available in public domain. The processing of surface models of head and face from the automatic measurement point of view is also not discussed in literature though this type of data has many practical applications like ergonomic design of close-ﬁtting products like respiratory masks,ophthalmic frames (spectacles), helmets and similar head-mounted devices; Creation of a facial feature database for face modeling coding and reconstruction and for use in forensic sciences; Automated anthropological surveys and Medical growth analysis and aesthetic surgery planning. Hence, in this thesis, a computational framework is developed for automatic detection, recognition and measurement of important facial features namely eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth and moustache (if applicable) from scanned head and shoulder polyhedral models. After preprocessing the scanned mesh manually to ﬁll holes and remove singular vertices, discrete diﬀerential geometric operators were implemented to compute surface normals and curvatures. Mean curvature magnitude was used as the primary metric to segment the mesh using morphological watershed algorithms which treat the mesh as a height map and separate the regions according to the water catchment basins. After visualization it was hypothesized that the important facial features consist of relatively high curvature regions and based on this hypothesis a much faster approach was then employed based on mathematical morphology to group the high curvature vertices into regions based on adjacency. The important feature regions isolated this way were then identiﬁed and labeled to be belonging to diﬀerent facial features by a decision tree based on their relative spatial disposition. ▼ Significant interest in nanotechnology is stimulated by the fact that materials exhibit qualitative changes of properties when their dimensions approach nanometer scales. Quantization of electronic, optical, and acoustic energies with nanoscale dimensions provides exciting, novel functions and opportunities, with interests spanning from electronics and photonics to biology. Characterizing the behavior of nanoscale materials is critical for the full utilization of such novel properties, but metrology for nanostructures is not yet well developed. In particular, mechanical properties of nanoscale particles or features are critical to the manipulation and stability of individual elements, yet changes in mechanical and thermodynamic properties in nanostructured materials create complications in fabrication. This thesis involves the application of Brillouin light scattering to quantify and utilize confinement induced vibrational spectra to understand phononics and elastic properties of nanostructured materials. Measurement and proper interpretation of acoustic waves in polymeric, inorganic, and biological nanostructures provides information about elastic properties and self-assembly. Brillouin light scattering was used to study the vibrational spectra of two-dimensionally confined photoresist and silicon oxide nanolines and three-dimensionally confined poly(methyl methacrylate) spheres and spherical-like viruses. These applications extend the capabilities of Brillouin from characterization of thin films and well-defined spheres to more complex structures. Acoustic waves propagating along the polymeric and silicon oxide lines allowed determination of modulus and its anisotropy. An unexpected acoustic mode was identified in the spectra from nanolines that provided a means to measure mechanical anisotropy. In polymeric lines as narrow as 88nm, neither a change in elastic properties relative to bulk elastic values nor anisotropy in elastic constants was observed. The acoustic waves propagating within polymeric and silicon oxide nanolines were mostly similar, but differed somewhat due to the ratio of elasticities between the lines and the substrate. More localized vibrations were observed in the photoresist lines than in the silicon oxide lines, both of which rested on a silicon oxide substrate. Analysis of the Brillouin spectra from Wiseana Iridoviruses (WIV) revealed strong mechanical coupling between close-packed viruses, unlike the behavior of polymeric colloidal particles. In contrast to traditional model assumptions, Brillouin spectra indicated that their DNA core, rather than their protein shell, dominated the elastic properties of WIV. Cette thèse en ergonomie s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un projet de conception industrielle d’un système innovant d’e-santé (HADAGIO), développé par l’entreprise SESIN et permettant le maintien à domicile de personnes âgées fragiles. Son objectif appliqué a été de produire des recommandations ergonomiques permettant d’améliorer les interfaces du système proposé sous la forme d’un portail d’applications web afin de les rendre faciles à utiliser par des personnes âgées et, ainsi, favoriser l’acceptation finale du dispositif HADAGIO. Ce travail s’est intéressé à la tâche de localisation d’informations sur un écran et, plus particulièrement, au rôle des éléments de surface (couleur et niveau de détails) des icônes et libellés lexicaux sur les performances de réalisation de cette tâche par des personnes âgées. Cette tâche est en effet particulièrement difficile pour ces dernières qui obtiennent des performances de localisation moindres que celles des jeunes (temps de réaction et nombre d’erreurs plus importants). Des recommandations graphiques pour la conception d’interfaces du portail HADAGIO ont émergées de ce travail, et permettent de faciliter la tâche de localisation des informations pour des personnes âgées.

This thesis in ergonomics is part of an industrial design project of an innovative e-health system (HADAGIO), developed by the company SESIN and allowing home support frail elderly. Its goal was applied to produce ergonomic recommendations for improving the interfaces of the system proposed in the form of a web portal software to make them easier to use and thus promote the final acceptance HADAGIO the device.This work has focused on the task of locating information on a screen and, in particular, the role of perceptual features (color and detail) lexical icons and labels on achieving performance of this task by elders. This task is indeed particularly difficult for this people who get lower localization performances than young people (reaction times and a larger number of errors). The models proposed for the target location task assumes that the knowledge possessed by individuals on the appearance of the target to locate allow improved performance. Given that advancing age does not affect the process involving knowledge stored in memory (Top Down type) implemented in this task it was to determine what could be the color of the role and Details of the target level in the implementation of these processes at a location task information.Graphics recommendations for HADAGIO portal interface design have emerged from this work, and provide information to facilitate the localization task for the elderly.

▼ Contamination of surfaces by nanomaterials can happen due to accidental spillage and release or gradual accumulation during processing or handling. Considering the increasingly wide use of nanomaterials in industry and research labs and also taking into account the diversity of physical and chemical properties of different nanomaterials (such as solubility, aggregation/agglomeration, and surface reactivity), there is a pressing need to define reliable nanomaterial-specific decontamination guidelines. In this project, we propose and investigate a potential method for surface decontamination of carbon-based nanomaterials using solvent cleaning and wipes. The results show that the surfactant-assisted removal efficiencies of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, single walled carbon nantubes and single walled carbon nano-horns from silicon wafers through wiping is greater than 95%, 90% and 78%, respectively. The need for further studies to understand the mechanisms of nanomaterial removal from surfaces and development of standard techniques for surface decontamination of nanomaterials is highlighted.; Another phase of experiments were performed to examine the efficiency of surfactants to remove multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) from silicon substrates with nano and microscaled features. In the first set of experiments, nanoscale features were induced on silicon wafers using SF₆ and O₂ plasma. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to observe the surface topology and roughness. In the second set, well-defined microscale topological features were induced on silicon wafers using photo lithography and plasma etching. The etching time was varied to create semi-ellipsoidal pits with average diameter and height of ~ 7-9 μm, and ~ 1-3 μm, respectively. MWCNTs in the form of liquid solution were deposited on the surface of silicon wafers using the spin coating process. For the cleaning process, the contaminated surfaces were first sprayed with different types of surfactant or water. Then, the MWCNTs were wiped off using a simple wiping mechanism. The areal density of the MWCNTs was quantified prior to and after the removal using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and post-image processing. For a surface featured with nanoscale asperities, the removal efficiency was measured to be in the range 83-99% based on substrate type and surface roughness. No evident relationship was observed between the etching time and the removal efficiency. For microscale features, increase of the etching time significantly decreases the removal efficiency.

▼ Image-guided surgery (IGS) has emerged as a valuable tool for the interactive incorporation of pre-operative image data into the surgical setting. While a majority of research has focused on neurosurgical procedures, the feasibility of implementing IGS methods in hepatic procedures has become evident. However, a lack of robustness in the methods developed for performing image-guided liver surgery (IGLS) has impaired their utility. In order to improve the robustness of the algorithms used within IGLS, the incorporation of salient anatomical features that can be reliably identified on the hepatic anatomy is proposed within this work. More specifically, these anatomical features can be weighted within the performance of the image-to-physical space mapping, or registration, that is required for display of the intra-operative location of surgical instruments within the context of pre-operative image data. Additionally, the salient anatomical feature registration can be used to quantify the extent of soft tissue deformation that is known to compromise the intra-operative registration due to the use of rigid body assumptions in determining the mathematical mapping. The quantification and analysis of soft tissue deformation within the context of IGLS provides unique insight into the design of algorithms that can be used to compensate for the shift induced guidance errors. Based on the deformation studies, a novel atlas-based model updating method is proposed for the improvement of IGLS guidance accuracy. The atlas-based method relies on the utilization of pre-operatively computed model solutions to expedite the determination of a non-rigid image-to-physical space mapping.
