▼ Effective
supply chain management requires focal firms to develop capabilities to manage a myriad of multi-tier, interconnected relationships often spanning multiple industries. Conventional assessments of
supply chain relationships as linear or dyadic structures, rather than as a network, limit academician and managerial approaches to overcome challenges to effectively manage
supply chains. Further, empirical research on innovation and performance implications of
supply network structure and its corresponding relationship dynamics is still fairly nascent. My research focuses on leveraging
supply network relationships to drive performance. Specifically, in my dissertation I examine how the structural, knowledge, and dependency differences in a firm’s
supply network can affect knowledge and information flow, and ultimately the firm’s innovative, operational, and financial performance. My first study (CH. 2) contributes to current research at the interface of
supply chain management and innovation. My second (CH. 3) and third paper (CH. 4) incorporate the intensity of each
supply network link, reflective of focal firms as customers (suppliers) that may rely heavier on a supplier (customer) based on their percentage of cost (revenue) that goes to (is generated from) that supplier (customer). All three papers extend current research findings by bringing a more holistic assessment of firms that are embedded in a
supply network, addressing the need for deeper structural analysis.

▼ The success of organizations in the current market place are largely determined by how efficiently a firm manages its supply chain, and the supply chain management practices that an organization is engaged in. Supply chain management practices that an organization implements are strategic tools in its performance. The study sought to investigate supply chain management practices in private universities in Kenya and how these practices impacted on the supply chain performance of the organizations under study. The study adapted a descriptive design and was based on the following objectives: to establish the supply chain practices that are carried out by private universities in Kenya, and to establish the impact of supply chain management practices on supply chain performance of private universities in Kenya. Primary data was utilized in the study and semi-structured questionnaires were administered to the respondents. A census approach was adopted and the census consisted of all the private universities in Kenya as listed from quoted source. A 5 –point likert scale was used to analyze output of each response received. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in the analysis of the variables. The study established that all four supply chain management practices have been implemented in private universities in Kenya with lean practices and information technology sharing implemented to a large extent, while outsourcing of non-core services and strategic supplier partnerships to a moderate extent. On individual supply chain management practices, it was established that involvement of suppliers in planning for procurement of new items was the least practiced variable. On relationship between supply chain practices and supply chain performance, all four practices were found to have positive statistical relationship with most aspects of performance that were measured, however the relationships were found to be statistically insignificant at 5% confidence level. The study recommended that private universities in Kenya should aim to enhance the aspects of strategic supplier partnerships such as early supplier involvement in procurement of new items. The study was limited to private universities in Kenya; future studies can consider all private institutions including colleges and schools. Future research can also be done focusing on more performance variables to see how they would impact implementation of supply chain practices. In addition research can also be done on how implementation of supply chain management practices affects quantitative performance issues such as profitability.

▼ Although a number of studies have been done on the concept and context of supply chain,
none has been done within the context of cosmetic industry in Kenya. There was need
therefore for a study to be carried out focusing on the Kenya‟s cosmetic industry in
conjunction with the main supply chain features. The purpose of the study was to
determine supply chain practices used in the cosmetic industry in Kenya. The objectives
of the study were to determine the supply chain practices adopted by cosmetic firms in
Kenya and to establish the challenges cosmetic firms face in the process of adopting the
practices. The study used descriptive design with the target population of study being all
the cosmetic firms in Kenya. From the findings, one can conclude the following based on
the objectives of the study; Consistent performance measures are used across the supply
chain and to a very great extent key suppliers are actively involved in new product
development in the cosmetic industry in Kenya. The researcher recommended that firms
need to embrace Supply Chain Management practices for them to survive in a
competitive and turbulent environment; firms management also need to exchange
transaction data, and leap forward into valuable collaborative planning and forecasting
across the supply chain. Further research should be done to determine how supply chain
management can contribute to organizational financial performance and customer
satisfaction.

▼ During the last 20 years, an era of expanding public health challenges and decreasing resources, the health care industry and the field of supply chain management (SCM) have both experienced significant changes. Health care systems, on a global scale, have due to decreasing resources and increasing demand been forced to find new approaches and concepts in order to improve quality but at the same time lower costs and increase value.
The study aimed at evaluating the supply chain management practices and performance at Kenya Medical Supplies Agency. A case study design was chosen as it enabled the researcher gain an in-depth understanding of the study. The target population of interest in this study consisted of staff members at KEMSA representing the top, middle and low level management. Data analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 17.0 and presented in the report in the form of tables, bar charts and graphs. The findings revealed that the major challenges that were identified by the respondents include: Poor infrastructure, Bulky materials to be transported and uncertainty in terms of demand. Lack of cold chain maintenance and lack of qualified personnel were considered as the least supply chain management challenges at KEMSA. However, the respondents were not sure on whether special materials to be transported,Poor order request form filling and late arrival of order request form are some of the supply chain management challenges at KEMSA.
The major limitation of this study is that data was collected from a small convenient sample of the staff at KEMSA and hence cannot be generalized to the health sector. A bigger study involving more firms in the sector will have to be done for generalisability.

▼ Supply chain challenges worsen humanitarian situations creating a lot of uncertainty among humanitarian organizations. This study was carried out to ascertain the impact of supply chain management challenges facing humanitarian organizations in Kenya. The study had two objectives: To establish the challenges facing humanitarian supply chain management in Kenya and to determine the effects of supply chain challenges on performance of humanitarian organizations in Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design where a sample survey of 40 humanitarian organizations was conducted. Data was successfully collected from 40 supply chain managers, analyzed using SPSS and presented using frequencies, percentages and mean scores in the form of tables and graphs. Factor analysis was also conducted in order to establish the main challenges facing humanitarian supply chain management in Kenya.
The findings of the study indicate that the main challenges facing humanitarian supply chain management are: lack of recognition of the role of supply chain management in humanitarian operations; delays in humanitarian operations due to domestic barriers; demand uncertainty; challenges in accessing affected population due to inadequate transportation modes; high costs inhibiting accessibility of the affected areas and inability to anticipate disaster. The effects of supply chain challenges on performance of humanitarian organizations are: delay in the delivery of the right products, poor information integration, and uncertainty in demand among others. The study encountered limitations such as inadequate time and finances to hire the personnel for collecting data as well as delays by respondents putting pressure on the time allocated for completing the project.

▼ Food franchising outlets are facing rapid growth in markets such as Kenya and a concurrent need
for sustainable supply chain management. The companies attempt to address supply risk and
threats to the triple bottom line (TBL) through managing suppliers and inputs and at the same time
need to overcome the uncertainty raised by the host environment. Government policy seems to
influence the directions and choice of sustainable supply chain management activities engaged in
by the firms. Food franchising outlets are aware that local stakeholder expectations may affect
operations significantly and as such, they are needed to carefully evaluate their operations in the
host market and seek balance between sustainable supply chain management practices and local
stakeholder expectations. The study therefore looks at the incentives adopted for sustainable supply
chain management and operational performance of food franchising outlets in Kenya. The research
design for the study was descriptive survey. The researcher proposed to do a census on all the listed
fifteen food franchise outlets. The researcher utilized the statistical package for Social sciences
(SPSS) software to analyze the efficiency and effectiveness of the data in details. The study finally
concludes that SSCM incentives are significant in enhancing the operational performance of the
food franchise outlets and from the findings it was concluded that the outlets should adopt SSCM
as part of their operational strategy in order to enhance operational performance and the study
recommended that awareness about SSCM should be raised in order for sustainability to be deeply
entrenched in the activities and philosophy of the firm.

▼ With growing competition from international brands and increasing volatility, South African apparel companies have recently made significant efforts to improve their
supply chain agility. Companies operating in this industry thus continue to seek ways to improve the flexibility and responsiveness of their
supply chains. An insight into new technologies that could assist with these improvements could prove beneficial for South African brands to reach international benchmarks for agility. While academic literature on the
subject is increasing but still limited, social media are growing in popularity, internationally, as technological tools that can facilitate visibility and responsiveness of extended
supply chains. Studies on the use of social media in South African firms are currently largely focused on their use in marketing, with none identified on their potential or current usage in
supply chain management.
The Agile
Supply Chain Framework, which was developed by Harrison, Christopher and Van Hoek in 1999, was used to guide the study. The four characteristics of agility: market sensitivity, virtual integration, process integration and network based
management, as identified by the framework, were used to analyse if there is potential for social media to increase agility in the South African fashion industry.
Qualitative research methods were used for the study. A case study approach was implemented and data was collected using in-depth interviews involving eight participants involved in the
supply chain of one of South Africa’s top apparel retailers. Data was analysed using thematic analysis.
The results from the analysis reflected that the uses of social media in the
supply chain are minimal, with one tool, Whatsapp surfacing as the most widely used in the
Supply Chain and Logistics department. While
management were mostly supportive of the introduction of social media in the organisation for
supply chain management purposes, concerns were raised about issues such as the lack of security of information and the possibility of losing productivity amongst employees. However, despite these concerns, a substantial number of participants indicated that they would be willing to adopt social media if they were aware of other tools that could benefit their organisation.

▼ The dairy industry is one of the fasted growing industries worldwide. This industry produces products that are used daily by many households and are regarded as a very important source of nutrition. Dairy products are usually sold in bulk to retailers who then sell to thousands of consumers on a daily basis. Since this is a product that is consumed daily, the assumption is that its demand can be forecast easily. There is a general assumption that because these are commodity product they need to be produced and supplied by a very lean system. However, this does not prove to be entirely true with dairy products.
The dairy industry produces products that have a very short life span and have special requirements in terms of packaging, storage and delivery. With a short shelf life these products need to be delivered to retailers every day and cannot be stored in warehouses or retail outlets for long periods of time. As the dairy industry continues to grow, competition is likely to increase. This will induce organisations to redouble their efforts to differentiate their offerings. Increasingly, the industry may be expected to use third party logistics providers (generally referred to as 3PLs) that are agile and innovative. These 3PLs should work as an integral part of the organisation and leverage collaborative efforts to add value and increase competitive advantage in the dairy industry.
Despite an apparent need for 3PLs, the findings of this study indicate that at present the dairy industry cannot afford to use these service providers. The 3PLs have proved to be very expensive and the dairy industry is not making sufficient money to meet the costs of the 3PLs that they require. In future, dairy companies may be compelled to use 3PLs since they need to focus their resources on improving their products. The 3PLs should be introduced for their competences, skills and expertise to service the dairy companies’ logistics needs and to assist in gaining a competitive advantage in this area. Third party logistics providers have the potential to add value to the dairy industry
supply chain by providing it with the latest technological advancements that will contribute to greater effectiveness and efficiency.

▼ Production methods lie on a continuum from mass production to Lean and or Agile. Agile production represents an innovative
supply chain strategy that shows promise in the manufacturing sector. Many South African companies are not yet aware of Agility. Currently, many manufacturers are implementing Lean and JIT principles. However, Lean and JIT may not respond adequately to modern market demands and shortened product lifecycles. The Agile paradigm focuses on speed, flexibility and response: critical factors that enable companies to achieve a higher level of differentiation.
The aim of this research was to determine the influence of different levels of Lean implementation on production Agility. This study was an innovative investigation into whether Lean and JIT contribute to, or detract from, Agility in manufacturing. There is little published research on this relationship. The study seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge and to benefit manufacturing companies: particularly those in South Africa. The research was exploratory in nature and consequently a case study approach was used. A non-probability, purposive sampling design was used to select three companies representing different categories on the spectrum of the Lean manufacturing continuum: Company A – beginner, Company B – intermediate and Company C – expert. The research was qualitative in nature.
A review of the literature tends to suggest that Lean and JIT restrict Agility by restricting speed, flexibility and response. Contrary to expectations, the findings of the study indicate that Agility tends to increase in companies that have undertaken the Lean journey. The results of the study confirm that Lean contributes to Agility within the manufacturing sector. As Lean levels increase from beginner to expert so too do the levels of speed, flexibility and response (SFR). The conclusion drawn from this study is that Lean is a pre-requisite for Agile and companies may need to implement Lean before considering Agile systems. The results of this study have been used to construct a conceptual framework and road map that may be used by firms wishing to undertake the Agile journey. The strategy has been termed ParaLeagile and it may assist manufacturing companies to make more informed and appropriate decisions, thus boosting the economy.

▼ The main objective I pursue in this thesis is to
better understand how different factors may independently and in
combination influence retailers' ordering decisions under different
supply chain structures (single agent and multi agent), different
demand uncertainty (deterministic and stochastic), and different
interaction among retailers (no interaction, competition and
cooperation). I developed three different studies where I build on
different formal
management model and then run multiple behavioral
studies to better understand subjects’ behavior. The first study
analyzes order amplification in a single-supplier single-retailer
supply chain. I used a behavioral experiment to test retailers’
orders under different ordering delays and different times to build
supplier’s capacity. Results provide (i) a better understanding of
the endogenous dynamics leading to retailers’ ordering
amplification, and (ii) a description of subjects’ biases and
deviation from optimal trajectories; despite subjects have full
information about the system structure. The second study analyzes
how order amplification can also take place when there is fierce
retailer competition and limited supplier capacity. I study how
different factors (different time to build supplier capacity,
different levels of competition among retailers, different
magnitudes of
supply shortage and different allocation mechanisms)
may independently and in combination influence retailers’ order in
a system with two retailers under
supply competition. Results show
that (i) the bullwhip effect persists even when subjects do not
have incentives to deviate, (ii) subjects amplify their orders in
an attempt to build an unnecessary safety stock to respond to
potential deviations from the other retailers, and (iii) retailers’
underperformance varies with the allocation mechanism used by the
supplier. In the last study, I analyze retailers’ orders in a
system where there is uncertainty in the final customer demand. I
experimentally explore the effect of transshipments among retailers
in a single-supplier multi-retailer
supply chain. Specifically, I
explore retailers’ orders under different profit and communication
conditions. In addition, I integrate analytical and behavioral
models to improve
supply chain performance. Results show that (i)
the persistence of common biases in a newsvendor problem
(pull-to-center, demand chasing, loss aversion, psychological
disutility), (ii) communication could improve coordination and may
reduce demand chasing behavior, (iii)
supply chain performance
increases with the use of behavioral strategies embedded within a
traditional optimization model, and (iv) dynamic heuristics improve
overall coordination, outperforming a simple Nash Equilibrium
strategy.

▼ In this thesis, an Ant Colony System with Variable Neighborhood Search algorithm (ACSVNS) is proposed to solve Multi-depot Vehicle Routing Problem (MDVRP). A new variant of vehicle routing problem, Multi-depot Green Vehicle Routing Problem (MDGVRP), is also formulated. In ACSVNS, two types of ants are used for two different purposes. The first type of ant is used to assign customers to depots while the second type of ant is used to find the routes. ACSVNS applies perturbation scheme, relocate local search and revised swap local search to improve the solution quality. Based on the experiment results of the 23 benchmark instances of MDVRP, ACSVNS can match the existing best known solution for 16 instances, which is the third best in all algorithms. Additionally, ACSVNS found new best solutions for the instance 5, 6 and 7. These results prove that ACSVNS has a good performance on solving MDVRP. Besides, in this thesis, a Multi-depot Green Vehicle Routing Problem (MDGVRP) is also formulated. Based on ACSVNS, a Two-stage Ant Colony System (TSACS) algorithm is proposed to find solutions for this problem. The solution for MDGVRP is useful for companies which employ the Alternative Fuel-Powered Vehicles (AFVs) to deal with the obstacles brought by the limited number of the Alternative Fuel Stations (AFSs). This thesis adds vehicles capacity and tank capacity constraints to make it more meaningful and closer to real-world case. The numerical experiment is performed on randomly generated problem instances to evaluate the performance of proposed algorithms.

▼ In a supply chain management context, the link between exchange partners is critical. Procurement is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that resource exchange is accomplished in an efficient and effective way. Yet, contemporary strategies such as outsourcing, just in time and supply base consolidation have increased interdependence between exchange partners. This creates a need for inter-firm dynamic capabilities facilitating mutual benefit. Based on this premise, this study provides a conceptual integration and focused synthesis of the literature on interdependence (i.e. mutual dependence and power asymmetry), and dynamic capabilities (i.e. boundary spanning and inter-firm absorptive capacity) in the context of supply performance. A primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the concept of interdependence in buyer-supplier relationships through an integrated lens of Resource Dependence Theory and the Dynamic Capability View, hence addressing the following research questions from a buying firm perspective: To what extent do mutual dependence in buyer-supplier relationships and inter-firm dynamic capabilities affect supply performance? How does power asymmetry moderate these relationships?
A mixed methods research approach was utilized. Data was collected from organizations in the Arab Gulf Countries, including: Oman, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. In the first phase, 400 survey responses were gathered to test the hypothesized relationships using structural equation modelling. This was followed by a case study with an airline company to better understand the dynamics of interdependency and dynamic capability between exchange-partners. The study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence to support the conceptual statements in the literature regarding the impact of interdependency and dynamic capabilities on supply performance.
The current thesis is valuable as it contends that mutual dependence would typically foster supply performance. Yet, mutual dependence is not always synonymous with good relationships, especially under conditions of high power asymmetry. Further, this study identifies from a buying firms perspective strategies that would typically foster supply performance under asymmetric power distribution. For example, under high power asymmetry the mediating effects of demand-side boundary spanning do not hold, whereas under low power asymmetry the mediating effects of supply side boundary spanning do not hold. On the other hand power asymmetry is not shown in this study to moderate the effects of inter-firm absorptive capacity.
The motivation for this thesis is found in the following areas of contribution. First, integrating resource dependence theory and the dynamic capability view enhances the theoretical explanations of the examined phenomena. Second, following recent debate in the literature, this study…

▼ This dissertation intends to examine 1) nature of organization improvisational capabilities and 2) some possible configurations for firm performance in a highly turbulent environment, i.e., e-commerce.
Motivated by the observation of the dynamics of digital business ecosystem and to answer calls from IS, strategy and
management fields, the first research question is to examine an organizational level capability that organizations use to respond to unexpected problems and turbulences. To gain understanding of organization improvisational capabilities, a scale development project was conducted. An essential goal of scale development is to create a valid measure of an underlying construct. . A thorough literature review of improvisation and organization improvisational capabilities was completed. A definition of organization improvisational capabilities is formed to provide some basic and direct information for scholars and managers. One of the results of this review was the discovery of dimensions of improvisational capabilities that helped drive the development of a measurement scale for this latent construct. A robust measure of improvisational capabilities is developed and empirically tested.
The result from the OIC scale development plays an important part for the second research question, which is to explore some possible combinations of elements for firm performance. Based on empirical field data, this dissertation sets out to investigate possible configurations for high firm financial performance involving organizational improvisational capabilities, IT infrastructure flexibility, particular organizational characteristics, and environmental factors and their relationships with innovation performance using the configurational approach and used fsQCA as the analysis tool. Instead of testing individual independent variable's effect like in linear path model, this dissertation applied configuration theory as the inquiring systems to show a more holistic view of the increasingly complex inter-relationships of elements of digital ecodynamics. Four different configurations for high financial performance of different firm sizes and IT department sizes were identified and discussed.
This dissertation is one of the earliest IS studies applying configuration logic and set-theoretic methods, like fsQCA, in organization research and responds to calls in the innovation literature. This dissertation also makes a broader methodological contribution to organization and IS strategy researches in general. Existing theories that are based on linear, additive relationships between elements and assume equilibrium status cannot effectively explain such dynamically changing punctuated disequilibrium in digital ecodynamics (Meyer et al., 2005). A configurational approach accompanied by strong methods such as fsQCA can be used to build new theories that can effectively explain such nonlinear discontinuous changes driven by dynamic interactions of digital technologies, organizational and social factors.

▼ In response to the calls for research of dynamic
supply chain development and IT business value, this study examined the impact of IT and social capital on interfirm dynamic capability. Healthcare delivery networks were chosen as the example to perform the research because of their distinct feature as a part of the
supply chain of healthcare industry. There is a patient flow in the network compared with traditional
supply chain because hospitals often need to work with various partners in order to deliver a healthcare service. This research proposes that IT with event driven architechture (EDA) and social capital are two factors improve the interfirm dynamic capabilities in healthcare delivery network which will lead to better operations and ultimately improves the healthcare service delivery performance. A research model was developed based on information processing view to investigate the relationship between IT, social capital, interfirm dynamic capabilities, and operational capabilities. Also, the quality and financial performance was examined as the outcome of developing dynamic healthcare delivery networks. The study employed primary data from survey and secondary data obtained from Center of Medicare and Medicaid. The empirical test was conducted using PLS, seemly unrelated regression, and cluster analysis. The finding of the empirical model illuminated the need for IT with EDA, better social capital with healthcare providers in order to develop a higher interfirm dynamic capabilities for healthcare delivery network which will improve the hospitals healthcare service quality and financial performance.

▼ Information technology consumerization represents technology designed for the consumer finding its way into the workplace. This is a phenomenon which is wide spread but has not currently sufficiently understood as technology becomes pervasive throughout the daily lives of most people. The purpose of this dissertation is to further explore this concept by examining the relationship of trust in social media use and social media based business analytics. Social media may be viewed as a hedonic information system implying that the enjoyment of using the system is a key driver of its use and may drive the user’s intentions to use more than its usefulness. We therefore explore the relationships using trust and enjoyment at an individual level.
Trust was explored first through a pilot study, of 264 students, showing that trust built through the personal use of social media transfers into trust and perceived relative advantage of social media based business analytics. Trust in social media was divided into three constructs consisting of cognitive trust in algorithms, emotional trust in social media providers, and emotional trust in social media communities. The relationships between trust in social media and trust and relative advantage of social media based business analytics was explored. This dissertation study expanded upon this by adding enjoyment as an additional mediating construct and exploring the relationships of enjoyment, trust and relative advantage of social media based business analytics and behavioral intentions. To make the results more generalizable the study also included participants who were active employees with
management experience. The full study consisted of a sample of 224 students and 315 working professionals.
The fill study Measurement and Structural models were assessed, and the hypothesized relationships tested, with results suggesting support for the majority of the study hypotheses. Study results indicate that trust transfers from personal technology to trust in data use in the workplace. It also indicates that with increased trust in the personal technology there is also an increase in enjoyment. Further, the study indicates that trust in social media based business analytics and perceived enjoyment have a direct influence on behavioral intentions of using social media based business analytics. Results and implications are discussed, along with limitations to the study’s generalizability and areas for potential future research.

▼ In monetary terms, the Sri Lankan tea industry was until 1995 consistently the country’s largest exporting element. The tea industry has always played an important role in the Sri Lankan economy, because it uses mainly local resources and over 20% of the population directly depends on it.
The Sri Lankan tea industry also plays a significant role in the global tea industry. For over three decades it was the largest tea exporter into the global supply chain (in both value and volume). However, Sri Lanka is currently ranked as the fourth-largest tea exporter in the world. Tea-production volume has stagnated at around 300,000 metric tonnes in Sri Lanka, while at the same time global production volumes have increased considerably in other tea-producing countries. Production costs have increased in real terms globally. Importantly, Sri Lanka has the highest production cost among all producers. Thus the sustainability of the tea industry in Sri Lanka is at risk.
Previous research has indicated that the characteristics in the agricultural sector, including tea production, are now similar to many characteristics of the manufacturing sector. However, this has not yet been fully investigated in the Sri Lankan tea sector. Even though some research has explored supply chain management aspects of agricultural products such as coffee, potatoes and cocoa, little attention has been paid to the tea industry.
The main objective of this research was to explore the tea supply chain, specifically focusing on the Sri Lankan tea industry. This research identified the influencing factors on a sustainable tea supply chain by mapping the supply chain for both smallholders and large-scale producers.

▼ The commissioner of this thesis is Post & Telecommunication Equipment Joint Stock Company (POSTEF). The
supply chain model of POSTEF is make-to-order which means that POSTEF only produces when receiving order from customers, but POSTEF always have late shipments affecting to its production. Besides, based on company’s business strategy, POSTEF wants to expand business to neighboring countries, so im-proving supplier delivery performance is a hot issue at POSTEF in order to secure
supply for production and improve to be stronger before expanding to other countries.
The thesis is to point out factors having an impact on supplier delivery performance and further, it suggests solutions and implementation method. The qualitative analysis from internal documents, literature resources, annual report of POSTEF and interview with Sales Manager of POSTEF who is responsible for
supply chain, logistics, import-export, sales and customer service at Southern Branch of POSTEF are applied to analyze situation of POSTEF.
The findings of analysis is that POSTEF is not active in delivery control and direct handling in sea shipment. In addition, communication between POSTEF and its suppliers is not effective to speed up work process and update shipment information soon to POSTEF. The author suggests POSTEF to change importing by Incoterm 2010 CIF to Incoterms 2010 EXW and FOB to gain more responsibilities in shipment planning and handling in order to have more rights in delivery control. Besides, to communicate effectively with suppliers, EDI is suggestion of the author to transfer information and data faster and secure data from losing as well as reduce errors in keyboard data entry.
The thesis can be used as a guideline of improving supplier delivery performance for relevant late shipment affecting factors. To implement these solutions, POSTEF needs to have commitment with top managers of POSTEF, trading partners, forwarding company, carrier and EDI network provider. Making careful analysis and selection in forwarding company, carrier and EDI network provider are the most important step to implement these solutions successfully.

▼ Business practitioners and academicians have alluded to the leverage attainable from SCM engagements. With increased research involvement over the past two decades, various researchers have faulted the literature for the limited human resource system focus. This research was motivated by the dearth of inquiry at understanding the interrelationship across the human resource system and supply chain performance. The contribution to this knowledge gap was reflected in the research question: What are the supply chain business knowledge areas that characterize the impact of human interaction on supply chain management performance? The study objectives included: (a) to develop a theoretical model that depicts the human resource system across supply chains, (b) to define human interaction in supply chains, (c) to operationalize this definition by identifying business knowledge domains that impact supply chain performance. Following an exhaustive literature review, human interaction in supply chains was defined as the region of intersection between work functions and business processes; including man-machine activity requiring human intervention, and human-to-human activity, whose outcome serves to execute strategy.
A sample of management-level personnel from US based 3PL firms participated in a three round Delphi procedure designed to divulge insights related to the research question. A second sample constituted with academic professors provided an independent group response that was compared with the 3PL practitioner sample.
The research findings implied that CRM, transportation, and logistics were important business knowledge areas that impact supply chain performance at the work function, business process, and financial performance levels, thus supporting the investigation of human resource performance measurement at these levels. The results also alluded to relationship management and cross-functional business management as important business domains for supply chain management-level work. Additionally, the results supported the notion that practitioners and academicians do not always have divergent viewpoints concerning supply chain issues.

▼ Diffusion of innovation literature proposes a variety of conditions and antecedents that may facilitate the complete incorporation of a technological innovation into an organization. To date, no one study assimilates the myriad factors that theory and past research has identified as potentially affecting incorporation into a unified model. In addition, many of these proposed factors have not been empirically tested to determine if they predict or facilitate incorporation of technological innovation into an organization. This dissertation serves as an initial investigation into the factors that may facilitate the organizational incorporation of a technological innovation. Whereas earlier studies employ a stage-model approach to address this topic, this study begins with the development of a unified model of technological incorporation, which provides insight regarding the factors that may contribute to the incorporation of enterprise architecture into the
supply chain. Using this model and the factors identified in extant research, the significance of 17 factors is tested to determine which are related to the incorporation of enterprise architecture into organizations in the
supply chain.
This dissertation is organized into five chapters. The introduction chapter provides the background and motivation for this study’s topic. The second chapter provides the conceptual basis for the remainder of the dissertation and builds a unified framework of technological innovation incorporation. The third chapter covers the research design and methodology. The fourth chapter begins with a summary of the data and concludes with the presentation of the model results and the results of the hypothesis tests. In chapter five, the implications of these findings for theory and practice are discussed. The dissertation ends with a discussion of the study’s limitations and potential future research directions.

▼ The purpose of this research is to refine the notion of Supply Chain Orientation (SCO) as originally posited by Mentzer et al. (2001) and Min and Mentzer (2004). Supply chain orientation is defined to be “the extent to which there is a predisposition among chain members toward viewing the supply chain as an integrated entity and on satisfying chain needs in an integrated way” (Hult et al., 2008, p. 527). This orientation (management philosophy), when implemented, manifests as Supply Chain Management (SCM) within and across organizations.
The process of ‘refining’ supply chain orientation involved three stages: determining additional SCO factors / indicators beyond those already in existence, refining the total set of factors / indicators through factor analysis techniques, and associating the SCO concept to other SCM-related concepts. Determining additional SCO factors and the vetting of the existing SCO model was done through a qualitative method (structured interviews with industry experts). Analysis of the interview data resulted into two new SCO factors—SCM Capability and Measurement Propensity—being identified. The high accuracy / low generalizability nature of the interview process required an industrywide survey in order to gather su cient quantitative data for a meaningful analysis. The new SCO factors were developed into survey questionnaire measurement items.
An invitation to participate in a web-based, quantitative survey was e-mailed to executive at roughly a third of the manufacturing companies in Canada. The results of that data gathering exercise were analyzed in a multi-stage process. First, after removing ‘motherhood statements’ from the indicator set, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to determine the underlying structure of SCO. Three factors—Benevolence (Trust), Internal SCM Focus, and Partner Reliability—emerged through this process. This “refined” SCO construct was then subject to a rigourous confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) process.
The CFA process found the SCO factors to be reliable. A dependent variable, Supply Chain Operational Performance (SCOP) was found to be positively influenced by changes in SCO. SCO was found to be a unique strategic orientation through the literature review process and validated as its own construct through a discriminant validity process. SCO was determined to be a second-order reflective latent variable, and top management support was found to be an antecedent to SCO.
Of interest to SCM practitioners and academics, SCO was found to be statistically invariable between respondents who were or were not members of a SCM industry association. As well, SCO did not vary outside statistical bounds across the supply chain from ultimate supplier (Earth) to ultimate customer. However, SCO was found to be stronger in companies that employed an “e cient” supply chain strategy (using the taxonomy of Lee (2002)) versus other generic strategies (like “agile” supply chain strategy).
The contributions of this…

▼ This dissertation has shown that public procurement regulation takes place
through regulatory documents that mainly underwent a name change and
that the only changes are found in the reporting framework. The South
African government identified public procurement as an active instrument to
achieve social and economic goals. To provide substance to this realisation,
public procurement was taken up in the Constitution of the Republic of
South Africa 1996. The constitution prescribes a procurement system that is
fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective.

▼ Traditional supply chain management models typically require complete model information, including structural relationships (e.g., how pricing decisions affect customer demand), probabilistic distributions, and parameters. However, in practice, the model information may be uncertain. My dissertation research seeks to address model uncertainty in supply chain management problems using data-driven and robust methods. Incomplete information typically comes in two forms, namely, historical data and partial information. When historical data are available, data-driven methods can be used to obtain decisions directly from data, instead of estimating the model information and then using these estimates to find the optimal solution. When partial information is available, robust methods consider all possible scenarios and make decisions to hedge against the worst-case scenario effectively, instead of making simplified assumptions that could lead to significant loss.Chapter 1 provides an overview of model uncertainty in supply chain management, and discusses the limitations of the traditional methods. The main part of the dissertation is on the application of data-driven and robust methods to three widely-studied supply chain management problems with model uncertainty.Chapter 2 studies the reliable facility location problem where the joint-distribution of facility disruptions is uncertain. For this problem, usually, only partial information in the form of marginal facility disruption probabilities is available. Most existing models require the assumption that the disruptions at different locations are independent of each other. However, in practice, correlated disruptions are widely observed. We present a model that allows disruptions to be correlated with an uncertain joint distribution, and apply distributionally-robust optimization to minimize the expected cost under the worst-case distribution with the given marginal disruption probabilities. The worst-case distribution has a practical interpretation, and its sparse structure allows us to solve the problem efficiently. We find that ignoring disruption correlation could lead to significant loss. The robust method can significantly reduce the regret from model misspecification. It outperforms the traditional approach even under very mild correlation. Most of the benefit of the robust model can be captured at a relatively small cost, which makes it easy to implement in practice.Chapter 3 studies the pricing newsvendor problem where the structural relationship between pricing decisions and customer demand is unknown. Traditional methods for this problem require the selection of a parametric demand model and fitting the model using historical data, while model selection is usually a hard problem in itself. Furthermore, most of the existing literature on pricing requires certain conditions on the demand model, which may not be satisfied by the estimates from data. We present a data-driven approach based only on the historical observations and the basic domain knowledge. The…

▼ This thesis presents an optimization model which helps retailers to reduce product costs by taking advantage of parts commonality in manufacturing and production areas, when selling similar units with uncertainty in demands. The concept of component commonality can be often found in the assemble-to-order system, which is the foremost concept used by prominent manufacturing companies in the global market. The method developed uses genetic algorithm (GA) to solve real world optimization problems that contain integer values for parts and finished items, and uncertain information.
Numerical examples are solved using generated stochastic scenarios to show the impact of uncertainty on solutions. This impact is verified using two important criteria, Expected Value of Perfect Information (EVPI) and Value of Stochastic Solution (VSS). The obtained solutions present significant monetary benefits for the manufacturer illustrating the importance of the model presented here for retailers.

▼ This research project investigates Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices and performance of hotels in Nairobi County. The study focused on GSCM practices, the drivers of GSCM, and the effect of GSCM.The study has been done by considering forty nine hotels in Nairobi County these are hotels registered with Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers.Descriptive research design was used since variables measured do not change much over a short period of time and the method is also less expensive. The empirical study involved administration of questionnaires to the respondents, a sample and statisticalanalysisi was adapted to achieve the general and specific objective of the study. The researcher administered a questionnaire where a response rate of 91.8% was achieved. The research project finds that hotels in Nairobi County have taken up GSCM practices based on different drivers. GSCM drivers that have brought about adoption of GSCM practices include competition, government legislation, regulatory compliance, customer requirements, success of other firms and social responsibility. The study also identified different effects that result from hotels taking up GSCM main one being resource saving. From the study it is clear that organizations take up GSCM mainly due to the need of keeping up with the competition in the industry and this has good effect to the organization as it result in resource saving.

▼ This study was seeking to establish the effect of lean supply chain management components on operational performance in the tea factories in Kenya. It also sought to establish the relationship between lean supply chain management and operational performance among tea factories in Kenya. Towards the achievement of the objectives, the research adopted a descriptive research design which involved distribution of questionnaires to various Kenya Tea Development Agency factories. A good response rate of 77.8% was realized. This study also established a regression and correlation analysis between the independent variables and the dependent variable. The findings of the study were that different factories adopt different lean supply chain components depending on their time of introduction to lean supply chain management. The study also established that most of the factories involved lean procurement, lean production as well as lean warehousing. The study concluded that the incorporation of lean supply chain management components in the operations of the organizations be part of the long term strategy of the organizations for them to improve on their operational performance. This study therefore recommends that organizations should consider adopting lean supply chain management components fully as this will be beneficial in the long run compared to the initial costs involved in the implementation of the components

▼ An emerging high priority issue for supply chain executives to address is how to enhance
operations to deal with supply chain disruption risks. Many companies are now finding that
a major disruption to the supply chain can have a lasting impact on the financial picture,
not to mention shareholder value. To address the emerging need for supply chain risk
management, the research looks into some of the practices for enhancing operational
resiliency and responsiveness to supply chain disruptions. The study, specifically, sought
to identify the main Supply Chain Risks faced by Nokia Kenya, establish SCRM practices
employed by Nokia Kenya and to determine the barriers to adopting SCRM practices by
Nokia Kenya. A case study design which is an in-depth study of a particular research was
adopted for this research so as to effectively realize the objectives of the study. The
population included all the staff departments within supply chain management in Nokia
Kenya. Research data was collected through a structured questionnaire, which was
administered by use of “drop and pick up later” method. The data collected was analyzed
using descriptive statistics. The statistical measure like frequency distributions,
percentages and central tendency such as mean were used in this study. The study found
that supply chain risks faced by Nokia include currency fluctuations, quality, taxes,
customs, and other regulations, regulatory approvals as indicated and physical theft. The
study also found that Nokia was using supply chain risk management tools like master data
management tools, sourcing tools, operations planning tool, spend management analysis
tool, sales tools and inventory optimization tool. The study further found that barriers to
implementing supply chain risk management practices include concerns of increased costs,
poor communication across supply chain and lack of adequate resources to implement
SCRM practices. The study recommends that the managements of the telecommunication
vendors should keep on doing regular risk assessments in their supply chains as a way of
averting adverse effects of uncertainty. The firms can also benchmark themselves against
the best players in the world as a way of improving their supply chain risk management
practices. The study also recommends that Nokia as well as other organizations should
adopt an information system that can allow information exchange across the supply chain.
This will help the partners in the supply chain to make key decisions on the production of
products. In addition, the study recommends that Nokia should increase its financial budget
for Kenya and employ more staff so as to enhance the implementation of supply chain risk
management practices.

▼ This study examines the green supply chain performance management practices in large manufacturing firms in Nairobi, Kenya. The study had three objectives: To establish the green supply chain performance management practices in large manufacturing firms in Nairobi, Kenya, To determine the factors and establish the impacts of green supply chain performance management practices in large manufacturing firms in Nairobi, Kenya. The study used research design (descriptive survey) to collect data and descriptive statistics (frequency distribution, cumulative frequencies and standard deviation) to analyze quantitative data. Factor analysis was also used to analyze the factors influencing green supply chain performance management practices. The study found out that green supply chain performance management practices have been implemented in large manufacturing firms in a great and very great extent. The study also found out that five components of factors were extracted using factor analysis method (values greater than one were considered and interpreted as factors because they explain 72% of the variants in the data matrix). The study through regression analysis found that 70.0 % of the changes in impact of green supply chain performance management could be attributed to the combined effect of the independent variables (implementation of balanced scorecard, benchmarking, use of cleaner production philosophy and focusing on key performance indicator). However, there were limitations in the study. For instance, the data collection was collected by Likert scale questionnaires, which have a degree of biases in their responses. Some firms identified also did not participate, citing lack of time and privacy issues. The study recommends that green supply chain performance management practices are important in ensuring impact of green supply chain performance management because of positive relationship between dependent variable and independent variables. The study recommends that all large manufacturing firms in Nairobi need to implement all the green supply chain performance management practices. The study suggests further research to be done on green supply chain performance management practices in the service industry.

▼ This thesis holds in tension two perspectives on the conceptual framing of
supply chain management (SCM): one as a discipline, the other as a domain of practice. It provides a unique appraisal into the conflict existing within SCM by addressing gaps in previous studies, through employing knowledge
management (KM) to inform both academic and practitioner conceptualisations of SCM. Application of the core assumptions and deliberations of Fabian’s disciplinary analysis criteria (coherence, knowledge, and quality) combined with Kuhn’s theory of disciplinary evolution permits examination of academic and practitioner conceptualisations of SCM. The analysis aims to challenge the assumption within previous studies that SCM’s disciplinary identity is ascertainable via one conceptualisation (academia) and through only two of Fabian’s criteria (coherence and quality). This thesis contributes to both theoretical development and analytical methodology by elucidating SCM’s body of knowledge to provide insight into its disciplinary identity through employing content analysis from a pragmatist’s perspective.
This research is conducted through content analysis of an archive of 1,371 articles extracted from four representative academic and practitioner publications covering the period from 1998 to 2008. The selected texts represent core developments of SCM knowledge, providing insight into theoretical and practical development over this timeframe from both academic and practitioner perspectives. This approach is unique, as the influence of practice on a discipline’s identity is overlooked in the literature. Subsequently, new opportunities of investigatory scope extend the dialogue on SCM’s disciplinary identity.
Fabian’s three criteria form the basis for the disciplinary analysis framework employed within this thesis, examining whether sufficient indicators of these criteria exist within the texts to signify that SCM is a discipline. Specifically, analysis of academic and practitioner conceptualisations as to the degree of coherence, the existence of a unified body of knowledge, and the degree of quality within SCM indicate a fragmented discourse. Academic and practitioner conceptualisations of SCM indicate that highly informative divergent discourses exist, representing a discipline in crisis and a domain of practice that is strategically mature. The potential effects of such divergent conceptualisations are acknowledged as they serve as a warning of the impending disintegration of SCM as a researchable entity.
Although SCM is argued to be effectively ‘dead’ as a discipline, future developments in the overall operations field enable opportunities for development, both conceptually and within practice. In reflecting on the research this thesis concludes on an optimistic note, for the potential exists to re-weave the tapestry of ideas represented by the term ‘SCM’ into a new form able to manifest the interests of both academia and practice. Thus, the re-weaving of operations
management to be more representative of reality is…
