▼ Background Understanding the determinants of obesity in adults is important due to its association with other chronic diseases. A study done in Ghana to determine Socio-demographic variation in obesity among Ghanaians adults reported that overweight and obesity had high prevalence in Accra metropolis. The study identified high prevalence among women and other upper- class residents. A similar study done at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, Ghana, found that risk factors for general obesity were being female, engaging in light Physical Activity, being aged 28-37 years and being married. The School of Public health environment have some exposures (such as lack of sleep, fast foods, peer influence that may influence overweight and obese.This study aimed at determining the prevalence of obesity and assessment of risk factors contributing to obesity among students at the School of Public health, University of Ghana, Legon. Methods. A cross-sectional study design was used. A systematic random sample of 180 students aged 18 to 49 years were interviewed from both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes from a total population of 352 students. This sample was made up of 87 males (48.3%) and 93 females (51.7%). Demographic characteristics such as age, sex, marital status and lifestyle (tobacco use, alcohol consumption and physical activity) were recorded. Weight and height were also measured with appropriate equipment. Physical activity level was assessed using the WHO Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results were expressed as frequencies, percentages, median and interquartile range (IQR). Chi-square test for trends at α=0.05 was used for checking association between risk factors and obesity. Multiple logistic regression was finally used to determine significant risk factors on obesity. STATA version 13 software was be used for data analysis. Results Prevalence of Body Mass Index (BMI) categories were 3(1.7%) underweight, 98(55.1%) normal, 58(32.6%) overweight and 19(10.7%) Obese. Prevalence of obesity was high (15.6%) in postgraduate students compared to undergraduate students (6.9%). Being married was also significantly associated with obesity (P-value=0.002). Physical activity, smoking and alcohol drinking did not show association with obesity. However prevalence of overweight (12.4%) and obesity (5.1%) was high among individuals engaged in light physical activity compared to those engaged in vigorous physical activity. Female had high odds of being obese compared to males (AOR=25, CI= 2.73-232.42, P-value=0.004). These results showed that as age group was the least predictor of obesity status of an individual (P-value=0.041). This is because its P-value is close to 0.5 (significance level). Conclusion The prevalence of obesity in this study was relatively high. This implies that obesity epidemic is a health problem among students attending tertiary institutions in Ghana. ▼ Preventive Screening Guidelines for Young Adults: A Review of the Literature: This literature review aims to summarize the existing research on young adults’ access to preventive health screenings. The review will discuss young adult preventive screening recommendations in the primary care setting, evidence-based guidelines specific to young adults, and barriers and disparities among young adults in adherence to these guidelines. Preventive Health Care Access Among Students in Brown University Post-Graduate Programs: Objective This paper evaluates whether Brown University graduate and medical students have access to preventive care by asking about primary care visits and screening recommendations supported by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Additionally, it examines whether there are gender and race-based disparities in screening for this group. Methods This descriptive study used a cross-sectional, observational design. A survey, based in DatStat Illume, was distributed online via email to Brown University medical and graduate students. Questions on the survey captured information about each student’s health insurance, most recent visit to a primary care provider, and whether or not a doctor had screened the student for cardiovascular disease, depression, or sexually transmitted infections. Students were also asked about receiving referrals to testing and services if needed and demographic questions. Proportions of students who reported receiving each screening measure were calculated. Secondary analyses of possible racial and sex disparities were conducted using Fisher’s exact test of independence. Results The survey was completed by a total of 123 eligible respondents, of whom 112 of these respondents met the inclusion criteria for analysis: enrollment in medical, graduate, or dual-degree programs at Brown University. A majority (54%) of the respondents had a personal healthcare provider and half (50%) had visited a primary care provider within the past 12 months. A majority of respondents had received all general recommendations, except screenings for depression and sexually transmitted infections. Statistically significant results include a greater proportion of black students (82%) reporting visits to a primary health care provider within the past 12 months, while smaller proportions of white (52%), Hispanic (22%), and Asian (35%) students reported the same (p=0.04). Lower proportions of all minority groups reported being asked about alcohol use (p=0.04) and having cholesterol levels checked, compared with whites (p=0.03). The women in this study reported being screened for depression at greater rates than the men (p<0.01) and reported greater rates of testing for sexually transmitted infections other than HIV (p=0.01). Conclusion The proportions of students who have a personal healthcare provider and have seen a primary care provider in the past 12 months are acceptable, but there is significant room for improvement. ▼ Self-regulation, comprised of affective regulation, cognitive processing, and self-related processing, is increasingly researched as potentially influencing medical regimen adherence. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been implemented to improve self-regulation, the most established and prominent of which are Mindfulness- Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). The degree to which MBIs engage specific affect regulation measures have not been systematically reviewed. Furthermore, MBIs that are customized to their target population may have greater impact than those which are not customized. College students often live in high- stress conditions. MBIs have potential to enhance college students’ ability to maintain healthy, happy lives in the midst of high-stress. The present study 1) examined which types and instruments associated with emotion-related processes are repeatedly used in trials of MBSR and MBCT using systematic review methodology and creation of an evidence map; and 2) evaluated impacts of the college-population customized Mindfulness-Based Intervention called Meditation, Mindfulness, and Health Training (MMHT) intervention on college students’ emotional well-being, assessed using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Secondary aims include additional affective outcomes (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Self-compassion Scale (SCS), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSS), general health indicators (blood pressure, body mass index, sleep [Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index], diet [Fruit and Vegetable Intake]) as well as cognitive performance (Adapted Graduate Records Examination Reading Comprehension, Trail Making Test), and levels of mindfulness (Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire [FFMQ]. This study served as a pilot for a randomized control trial currently underway, and a forthcoming meta-analysis will additionally assess the efficacy of the systematic review results presented here. ▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate university students’ awareness and attitude towards rural environmental degradation. To achieve the objectives of the study 289 students were selected through stratified sampling from three faculties in Addis Ababa University. Students were assessed using multiple choice awareness test and Likert type of attitude scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistic; t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and ANOVA. All statistical manipulations were done by SPSS 15 version for windows. The result of the study revealed that generally the students found to have moderate level of awareness and favorable attitude towards land and forest resources. In the case of item by item analysis students found to have less x awareness for some of the environmental issues raised in the study. Students also have unclear stand for some of the issues raised in the attitude items. The study also revealed that there was statistically significant difference in mean awareness score of students in terms of gender and age. It shows that male and relatively old age students found to have better awareness about the problem, causes, consequences and solution of land degradation and deforestation. In addition, statistically significant mean awareness difference was observed between students from urban and rural areas. This indicated that students from rural areas had better awareness to land and forest resources. On the other hand, the mean awareness score difference between second and fourth year students was significant. That fourth year students found to have better awareness for land and forest resources. The ANOVA summary for awareness also showed the existence of significant mean difference among faculties and departments. Thus the sampled students in Social Science College and departments of PSIR and GES found to have better awareness to land and forest resources. Moreover, the analysis of attitude based on the independent variables shows the absence of significant difference between male and female, second year and fourth year students’ mean score. It was also insignificant between urban and rural, and age of students. Thus, male and female, second year and fourth year, relatively old and young, rural and urban students found to have similar attitude towards land degradation and deforestation. The ANOVA summary for attitude also did show the existence of significant mean difference among faculties and departments’. Thus, the sampled students in Social Science College and departments of PSIR and GES found to have more favorable attitude to land and forest resources. The correlation coefficient also revealed that there was a significant positive correlation between environmental attitude and awareness, but it is weak. This implies that to some extent awareness may lead to an initial development of attitude which in turn may result in increasing awareness. ▼ The School of Business at the University of Nairobi has been admitting student‟s way in excess of their capacity to handle. This has been due to the need for the university to raise money for their operations and expansion of physical facilities. The large number of students has put a major strain on the physical facilities as well as the human resources of the School of Business. The strain has affected the quality of services offered by the school with students often complaining of poor service quality. Service quality is related to service potential, service process or service result. This study intended to determine the students‟ perception of the service quality at the school of Business. Relevant literature was reviewed in chapter two explaining the various theories relating to service quality. Every time a service company provides a service to a particular customer, the customer makes an assessment of the quality of service even if unconsciously. The sum total of repeated assessment and the collective assessments by all customers establishes in their minds the organisations image in terms of service quality. To determine the students‟ perception of service quality, the researcher adopted the descriptive research methodology. Questionnaires were prepared and distributed to the students using the convenience sampling method. Data was collected and analysed using a statistical package to produce charts and summary statistics. The interpretation of the results from the survey was done. The research was able to establish the perceived quality of service offered at the School of Business including but are not limited to physical facilities, human resource and teaching and learning materials. The study established the main areas requiring immediate attention was public relations, updated learning materials and expansion of physical facilities. The study also established that the students consider the price of the service as too high and review of the same downwards may be necessary.

▼ The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether there were significant differences between Oregon community college collegiate freshmen and Oregon State University freshmen in terms of interest, values, and manifest needs. The study was limited to a representative sample of the freshman population in the lower-division collegiate program at three selected Oregon community colleges and to a representative sample of Oregon State University. The Strong Vocational Interest Blank for Men, the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values, the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, and a Personal Data Schedule were administered to 499 first-term male and female freshmen who were enrolled at these institutions for the fall term of 1963. The responses of the freshmen on the psychological tests were treated statistically by analysis of variance, and the responses on the Personal Data Schedule were converted to percentages and analyzed using the t-test. Significant differences were evident among the responses of the Oregon State University and community college males and females on the Personal Data Schedule. There were 32 items that differentiated between the community college and Oregon State University males at the 1 percent level and six items at the 5 percent level. There were 28 items that differentiated between the community college females at the 1 percent level and four that differentiated at the 5 percent level. On the Study of Values, Oregon State University males showed a higher mean score on the Theoretical scale than did the community college males. On the Social scale the community college males had a higher mean score than that of the Oregon State University males. Females at Oregon State University showed a higher mean score on the Economic scale than did the community college females, while the community college females had a higher mean score on the Religious scale than did the females at Oregon State University. There were many significant differences between the interests of Oregon State University males and community college males. Males at Oregon State University had substantially higher interest scores on the Strong Vocational Interest Inventory than did the community college males in Groups I and II, while community college males had considerably higher interest scores than did Oregon State University males in Groups VIII and IX. None of the scores on the occupational scales yielded significant differences among the mean scores of females attending Oregon State University and the community college females. Scores on the non-occupational scales, the Specialization Level and Occupational Level, differentiated between Oregon State University and community college males. The Oregon State University males scored higher than the community college males on both of these scales. Research indicates that the psychosocial and academic needs of combat veterans are different from the general student population on a college campus. A qualitative research design was used to explore the readiness of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UMH) to support combat veterans as they pursue their higher education. This multicase study was carried out during the academic year of 2010. Constructivism guided the theoretical framework of the study and positive psychology (a strengths-based approach) was used to address issues of trauma exposure. The primary instrument of data collection was a semistructured interview questionnaire which was used with 8 student veterans who had combat experience during OIF/OEF. The literature review included articles from professional journals, webinars, newspaper articles, monographs, books, and blogs of personal accounts of those who served in these two wars. Once the data were coded, visual mapping was used to identify the emergent themes. Pattern matching, cross-case analysis and a constant comparative method were employed to analyze the data. The key findings were that the military has its own unique culture which can lead to misunderstandings between student veterans and civilians. Cross-cultural training could reduce this problem. Transitioning from military life to civilian (academic) life is difficult, therefore creating a bridge between the battlefield and the classroom is necessary. UHM is not considered to be a ―military-friendly school, but efforts are underway at the administrative level to improve the situation. Military members carry their moral code of never leaving a comrade behind back to civilian life; and, veterans helping veterans continues to be a protective factor in building resilience. In spite of the recent efforts on the part of the DoD, stigma continues to be a barrier to seeking help for hidden disabilities. Professional training is needed for UHM faculty and staff to raise awareness about veterans' issues, and transformative learning theory is the recommended mode for creating a connected school environment that would support student veterans and facilitate a more empathetic campus community.
