▼ In this dissertation, after a brief review on the Einstein s General Relativity Theory
and its application to the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological
models, we present and discuss the alternative theories of gravity dubbed
f(
R) gravity. These theories come about when one substitute in the Einstein-Hilbert
action the Ricci curvature
R by some well behaved nonlinear function
f(
R). They
provide an alternative way to explain the current cosmic acceleration with no need
of invoking neither a dark energy component, nor the existence of extra spatial dimensions.
In dealing with
f(
R) gravity, two different variational approaches may
be followed, namely the metric and the Palatini formalisms, which lead to very
different equations of motion. We briefly describe the metric formalism and then
concentrate on the Palatini variational approach to the gravity action. We make a
systematic and detailed derivation of the field equations for Palatini
f(
R) gravity,
which generalize the Einsteins equations of General Relativity, and obtain also the
generalized Friedmann equations, which can be used for cosmological tests. As an
example, using recent compilations of type Ia Supernovae observations, we show
how the
f(
R) =
R − fi/Rn class of gravity theories explain the recent observed
acceleration of the universe by placing reasonable constraints on the free parameters
fi and n.
We also examine the question as to whether Palatini
f(
R) gravity theories
permit space-times in which causality, a fundamental issue in any physical theory
[22], is violated. As is well known, in General Relativity there are solutions to the
viii
field equations that have causal anomalies in the form of closed time-like curves,
the renowned Gödel model being the best known example of such a solution. Here
we show that every perfect-fluid Gödel-type solution of Palatini
f(
R) gravity with
density and pressure p that satisfy the weak energy condition + p 0 is necessarily
isometric to the Gödel geometry, demonstrating, therefore, that these theories
present causal anomalies in the form of closed time-like curves. This result extends a
theorem on Gödel-type models to the framework of Palatini
f(
R) gravity theory. We
derive an expression for a critical radius rc (beyond which causality is violated) for
an arbitrary Palatini
f(
R) theory. The expression makes apparent that the violation
of causality depends on the form of
f(
R) and on the matter content components.
We concretely examine the Gödel-type perfect-fluid solutions in the
f(
R) =
R−fi/Rn class of Palatini gravity theories, and show that for positive matter density
and for fi and n in the range permitted by the observations, these theories do not
admit the Gödel geometry as a perfect-fluid solution of its field equations. In this
sense,
f(
R) gravity theory remedies the causal pathology in the form of closed timelike
curves which is allowed in General Relativity. We also examine the violation
of causality of Gödel-type by considering a single scalar field as…

▼ The currently observed accelerated expansion of the Universe, as
well as the so called dark mater problem in astrophysics, has raised many
discussions and some doubts about the very well tested Einstein’s theory
of gravitation, known as General Relativity. Several modified, as well as
extended gravity theories, have been formulated in the last 15 years, and
some others been resuscitated in new aspect. In this thesis, we present and
discuss, in the class of extended gravity, the alternative theories known
as
f(
R) gravity. These theories come about when one substitute in the
Einstein-Hilbert action the Ricci scalar curvature
R by some well behaved
nonlinear function
f(
R). They provide an alternative way to explain the
current cosmic acceleration with no need of invoking either a dark energy
component or the existence of an extra spatial dimension. In dealing with
f(
R) gravity, two different variational approaches may be followed, namely
the metric and the Palatini formalisms. In the metric approach the
connections are assumed, ab initio, to be the Levi-Civita connections and
variation of the action is taken with respect to the metric only, whereas in
the Palatini approach the metric and the connections are treated as independent
fields and the variation of the action is taken with respect to both.
Although they give the same equations for the Einstein-Hilbert action, for
a general
f(
R) nonlinear term in the action they give rise to very different
equations of motion. For both formalisms, we make a systematic and
detailed derivation of the field equations, which generalize the Einstein’s
equations of General Relativity and examine the covariant conservation of
this equations. In this regard, we detect and call attention for the covariant
conservation of the equations in Palatini
f(
R) gravity, which, in our view, deserves some more debate on the physical relevance of conformal aspects
of the Palatini approach.
In order to shed some light on the debate about the role of
f(
R)
gravity, we also examine the question as to whether this theories permit
space-times in which the causality, a fundamental issue in any physical
theory, is violated. In the framework of
f(
R) gravity, the causal
structure
of four-dimensional space-time has locally the same qualitative nature as
the flat space-time of special relativity: causality holds locally. The nonlocal
question, however, is left open, and violation of causality can occur. As
is well known, in General Relativity there are solutions to the field equations
that have causal anomalies in the form of closed time-like curves, the
renowned Gödel model being the best known example of such a solution.
Here we show that for
f(
R) gravity satisfying the condition df/dR > 0,
independently of being formulated in metric or Palatini formalism, every
perfect type-fluid Gödel-type solution with density ρ and pressure p that
satisfy the weak energy condition (ρ + p ≥ 0) is necessarily isometric to
the Gödel geometry. This demonstrate that these theories present…

This these is composed by two parts which are relatively independent to each other. In the first part an alternative theory of the gravitation, the so-called f(R) gravity, is studied. A first mathematical analysis is discussed on this theory, including the mathematical formulation of the Cauchy problem, the discussion on the choice of coupling, the mathematical formulation of the differential system. This system is four-order and highly involved. To establish the local well-posedness result, a series of transformations ans re-formulations is introduced and we finally arrived at a formulation, called the augmented conformal formulation with which we have managed to establish the local well-poseness theory. The second part is devoted to the analysis of a type of coupled wave and Klein-Gordon system. This kind of system arises naturally in many physical model, especially in the Einstein equation coupled with a real massive scalar field and the augmented conformal formulation of the f(R) gravity. The main difficulty to treat this type of system is the lack of symmetry: one of the conformal Killing vector filed of the linear wave operator, the scaling vector field S := t∂t+r∂r is not a conformal Killing vector field of the linear Klein-Gordon operator. To overpass this difficult, a new framework, called the…

▼ This dissertation, entitled Thérèse, ecstasy of an offered body: the mythodological journey of a
f(
r)iction artist, travels over the grounds of art and holiness, discussed here by means of a practical/theoretical research embraced by the artist-researcher Karla Martins about her guide-myth: Saint Therese of the Child Jesus. The French saint, also known as the Holy Face, manifests itself in this investigation through the scope of the artist-researcher’s personal mythology and unveils herself through a performative experience. In order to carry such experience on, the research was based on the Mythodology in Art and the Artethnography, practices/concepts upheld by Prof. Ph.D. Luciana Lyra (UERJ), which, in turn, are connected to the fields of Anthropology of Experience (Anthropology of Performance), led by anthropologist Victor Turner, and Anthropology of the Imaginary, led by sociologist Gilbert Durand, which by their turn involve rites of passage, image, myth and ritual. The application of these mythodological procedures cause the most intimate of the artist-researcher’s pulsions to erupt and pervade her writing, as well as the creation of the performance Thérèse itself.

▼ The observational evidence of the accelerated expansion of the Universe has been the
main reason for a revision of the cosmological evolution as predicted by General Relativity
(GR). Currently there are two main approaches to solving this problem: by introducing
in the Einstein’s equations a term which represent a new kind of fluid (the so-called
dark energy possessing exotic features) or by the modification of the gravitation theory.
In this thesis we focus on the second approach, particularly the theories know as
f(
R) theories
of gravity, which have received many attention in the last years. In this framework,
the Raychaudhuri equation makes possible to examine the whole of spacetime structures
without specific solutions of Einstein’s equations, playing so a central role to the understanding
of gravitational attraction in Astrophysics and Cosmology. In the general
relativity theory of gravity without a cosmological constant, a non-positive contribution
from the spacetime to Raychaudhuri’s equation is usually interpreted as manifestation of
the attractive character of gravity. In this case, particular energy conditions - indeed the
strong energy condition - must be assumed in order to guarantee this attractive character.
In the context of
f(
R) theories of gravity however, even assuming the usual energy
conditions we may have a positive contribution to Raychaudhuri’s equation. Besides giving
us a simple way to explain the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe, this
fact opens the possibility of a repulsive character of this kind of gravity. In this thesis we
address the attractive/non-attractive character of
f(
R) theories of gravity at the light of
Raychaudhuri’s equation and make use of the strong energy condition, jointly with recent
estimated values for the cosmographic parameters, in order to put bounds on a paradigmatic
class of
f(
R) theories of gravity.

▼ Modern cosmology aims to model the large scale
structure and dynamics of the universe, and its origin and fate. It was born as a quantitative science after the advent of Einstein’s theory of General Relativity (GR) in 1915. Soon after, GR found its first empirical verification in its successful prediction of two solar system phenomena: the perihelion precession of Mercury and the deflection of light by the Sun. Since then, GR has become an essential tool in the study of astrophysical and cosmological phenomena. According to GR, the energy and momentum of matter are the source of the gravitational field, and at large scales determine the geometry of the universe. In particular, Einstein studied solutions of the GR field equations for a homogeneous distribution of matter, as a model of the large scale
structure of the universe. He discovered soon that his theory, in its simplest form, does not support a static universe, but instead predicts an expanding or a contracting one. By contrast, the small velocities of the stars observed at that time suggested that the universe is stationary. In order to allow for a steady-state solution, Einstein had to add what came to be called the cosmological constant to the field equations of GR. The dynamics of a homogeneous and isotropic universe according to GR was subsequently studied more systematically by Alexander Friedmann in 1922, again finding expanding or contracting solutions. In parallel, Edwin Hubble discovered the existence of galaxies outside of the Milky Way, which until then was believed to comprise the entire universe. His subsequent observations showed, in 1929, that the recessional velocity of galaxies increases with their distance from the Earth, implying that the universe is expanding. In consequence, Einstein dropped the cosmological constant from the field equations, famously regretting his ad hoc hypothesis of the universe being static as his “greatest blunder.” However, from a quantum field theory perspective, the cosmological constant in fact arises naturally as the energy density of the vacuum; due to the quantum uncertainty principle, the ground state energy of all matter fields is nonzero, and contributes to the vacuum energy density, acting like a cosmological constant for the gravitational field. Thus dropping the cosmological constant from the field equations turned out to beg a theoretical justification. Nevertheless, until the 1990’s the standard cosmological paradigm was described by a homogeneous and isotropic matter-dominated expanding universe, with no cosmological constant.
A great turnover happened in 1998 when observations of type Ia Supernovae (SN Ia) revealed for the first time a very recent trend in the expansion of the universe: at a redshift z < 1 the expansion of the universe started accelerating. This observation has been subsequently corroborated by other independent cosmological observations: the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the Large Scale
Structure (LLS), the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and the estimated age of the…

diffraction experiments up to 30 GPa have been carried out. The
results show that UGa3 system is stable up to 30 GPa. Electronic
structure calculations have been carried out as function of reduced
volume up to 40 GPa. The results show that the Fermi level lies
very close to the maximum in the DOS curve. In order to validate
the result of 2-D maps, total energy of the system has been
calculated for hexagonal structure and compared with total energy
curve of cubic AuCu3 type structure. Although, the energies of
these two structures are very close, the total energy curve of
AuCu3 type structure lies below that of Ni3Sn. This comparison
shows that AuCu3 cubic type structure is more stable than Ni3Sn
(hexagonal) type structure. This may be due to the large range of
structural stability of AuCu3 type structures under pressure. In
order to understand the structural stability of LaAl2 and LaAl3
compounds, the band structure calculations as a function of reduced
volume have been carried out. The density of states of LaAl2
reveals that the EF lies in a slope between bonding maxima and
antibonding minima. The value almost equal to one is known as
condition for stability. And also, the value of Wocc/Wb do not show
any change under pressure in both the cases. The band dispersion
curves for both the compounds show movement to f bands under the
influence of pressure. Some of them cross the Fermi level leading
to so called Lifshitz transitions. However, it is seen that these
electronic changes do not manifest in any volume anomaly in the
compound under pressure. This may be due to the fact that the bands
touching the EF are mostly sp in nature with low density of
state

This work reviews concisely some of the theoretical attempts to explain the recently observed acceleration of the universe. Emphasis is put on the so-called theories f(R) which involve invariant modi.cations of the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian density. The pertinent .eld equations are derived from three distinct formalisms which are known in the literature as the metric formalism, the Palatini formalism and the a ne formalism. For the case of the metric and Palatini formalisms, we carry out some interesting calculations and show the corresponding versions of the Friedmann equations. In addition, we present a minimally coupled Friedmann-Maxwell-f(R) model which may give a cosmological equation of state for w that agrees with available measurements of the red-shift of Ia supernovae.

▼ While access to secondary school is increasingly available to a larger and more heterogeneous population of learners, expansion in enrolment masks the reality that educational inequalities are widening. Using a comparative and in-depth qualitative research design, this dissertation explores processes of educational inclusion and exclusion as they unfold within the classroom walls, where it is teachers who determine how access to the curriculum and classroom culture is created and sustained. Data generated through 12 lesson observations and accompanying stimulated recall interviews enable consideration of how patterns of teacher discourse influence teacher capacity to foster inclusivity, and why such patterns emerge. Data gathered through key informant interviews and focus group discussions support the scrutinization and triangulation of tentative findings drawn from the observation and stimulated recall data. This research is premised on the need to expand our knowledge of what inclusive education can mean in classrooms typically characterized by material and human deprivation, and in teaching approaches most often defined by a strong pedagogic tradition of knowledge transmission. The findings support the construction of an explanatory framework revealing the ways in which patterns of classroom discourse shape teacher capacity to foster inclusion in Tanzanian secondary school classrooms. They reveal the importance of three moments embedded within each teacher-student interaction: The moment within which a turn is allocated, the moment within which a student response is interpreted by a teacher, and the moment within which a teacher then follows up. The findings demonstrate the power of the multiple continua of discursive strategies within which teachers move, revealing the specific decisions and respective trade-offs which influence teacher capacity to foster processes of educational inclusion. The findings are significant for expanding our understanding of the intersection between pedagogy and inclusion in the Tanzanian context, generating insight into that which teachers do, the reasons for why they do it, and the contextually relevant levers for change.

Le but

Connecting T. S. Eliot's Waste Land to R. F. Burton's Kasidah produces a literary theory. The founding principle of this theory is the Unity of Consciousness (Wahdat al Wayy), after the exegesis of Ibn Arabi (Wahdat al Wujud and Wahdat al Adyan). It also postulates that any life is but a stream of consciousness. Action is thus the way by which consciousness writes in the world, and experience is the way the world writes in consciousness. The expression of consciousness in perspective is in turn a profound literary invariant, connecting The Waste Land and The Kasidah but also Poe's Al Aaraaf, Baudelaire's Voyage, Villon's Testament or Leopardi's Canto Notturno. Another invariant, based on the precedent, is the invariant of the wasteland, which can be summed up by the myth of the Ortolano Eterno : Homo : locatus est, damnatus est, humatus est, renatus est : in Horto. Now the seventh surah of the Quran is a notable expression of the invariant of the wasteland. In the same way that there is a connectomics of the human brain, there is a connectomics and also a biology of literatures. A sample of its corpus callosum, connecting the Western and Eastern literatures, is the "chain of the wasteland", a lineament of texts which leitmotiv is the interaction between consciousness and the world. Regarding Eliot his direct sufi influences range from Omar Khayyam to Guénon and Schuon, and…

▼ One of the interesting consequences of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity is the black hole solutions. Until the observation made by Hawking in 1970s, it was believed that black holes are perfectly black. The General Theory of Relativity says that black holes are objects which absorb both matter and radiation crossing the event horizon. The event horizon is a surface through which even light is not able to escape. It acts as a one sided membrane that allows the passage of particles only in one direction i.e. towards the center of black holes. All the particles that are absorbed by black hole increases the mass of the black hole and thus the size of event horizon also increases. Hawking showed in 1970s that when applying quantum mechanical laws to black holes they are not perfectly black but they can emit radiation. Thus the black hole can have temperature known as Hawking temperature. In the thesis we have studied some aspects of black holes in f(R) theory of gravity and Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. The scattering of scalar field in this background space time studied in the first chapter shows that the extended black hole will scatter scalar waves and have a scattering cross section and applying tunneling mechanism we have obtained the Hawking temperature of this black hole. In the following chapter we have investigated the quasinormal properties of the extended black hole. We have studied the electromagnetic and scalar perturbations in this space-time and find that the black hole frequencies are complex and show exponential damping indicating the black hole is stable against the perturbations. In the present study we show that not only the black holes exist in modified gravities but also they have similar properties of black hole space times in General Theory of Relativity. 2 + 1 black holes or three dimensional black holes are simplified examples of more complicated four dimensional black holes. Thus these models of black holes are known as toy models of black holes in four dimensional black holes in General theory of Relativity. We have studied some properties of these types of black holes in Einstein model (General Theory of Relativity). A three dimensional black hole known as MSW is taken for our study. The thermodynamics and spectroscopy of MSW black hole are studied and obtained the area spectrum which is equispaced and
different thermo dynamical properties are studied. The Dirac perturbation of this three dimensional black hole is studied and the resulting quasinormal spectrum of this three dimensional black hole is obtained. The different quasinormal frequencies are tabulated in tables and these values show an exponential damping of oscillations indicating the black hole is stable against the mass less Dirac perturbation. In General Theory of Relativity almost all solutions contain singularities. The cosmological solution and different black hole solutions of Einstein's field equation contain singularities. The regular black hole solutions are those which are solutions of Einstein's equation…

▼ This dissertation examines some of the ways in which presidential rhetoric about sport and athleticism has functioned historically to constitute both our ideals of citizenship and the presidency itself. Because sport and physicality have become rhetorically linked to modern notions of what it means to be "presidential," modern presidents deploy rhetorics of sport and sports fandom to help define civic virtue and the ideal citizen. They also use rhetorics of sport to advance their own political identity and policy agendas. Understanding the different ways in which presidents and presidential candidates have rhetorically engaged sport helps illuminate both the gendered nature of presidential character and our understanding of how ideas about “good citizenship” are constituted. Through four case studies, I illustrate how presidents (or, in one case, a presidential candidate) have used rhetorics of sport and physicality to define or bolster their own image, promote core American values and particular conceptions of citizenship, and advance political or policy agendas.

▼ Discussions of the foundations of
evolutionary theory – especially natural selection, fitness, and
genetic drift – are saturated with terms referring to various kinds
of chance, stochasticity, randomness, unpredictability, and so
forth. This dissertation examines these uses of chance in
philosophical and historical perspective. I
begin by arguing that, both in the contemporary and historical
arenas, the current state of the literature on chance is deeply
troubling. Work in the philosophy of biology (i) often conflates
various clearly distinct notions of chance, and (ii) often
approaches the analysis of chance from the perspective of a debate
(on the causal potency of natural selection and genetic drift) that
does not in fact profitably engage evolutionary theory.
Historically, as well, the most common way of analyzing the
development of the use of chance in evolutionary theory does not
engage the actual research of historical actors, a point I make by
exploring the work of Karl Pearson and W.
F.
R. Weldon at the turn of
the twentieth century. I thus propose a new
guiding question for research into the role of chance in
evolutionary theory: what is the relationship between our
statistical biological theories and the processes in the world
those theories aim to describe? I then offer a novel framework for
determining the answer to this question, derived from a deeply
biologically-informed understanding of fitness, selection, and
drift. This view combines core insights from work in philosophy on
the propensity interpretation of fitness with cutting-edge
biological treatments of population modeling. Chance enters this
model at only a single point – the distribution over the various
possible lives that an organism might live – and this single source
can explain the influence of chance throughout fitness, natural
selection, and genetic drift. This framework, I claim, constitutes
a fruitful way to understand both the foundations of evolutionary
theory and the role of chance in those
foundations.

▼ In 1974 the first federal bioethics commission was created to examine the ethics and policies on biomedical research with human subjects. The idea of having a federal bioethics commission has continued since, with new presidents creating new commissions to replace their predecessor's commission. Six years before the first commission was created, Senator Walter Mondale proposed for the first time the idea of such a commission, which would examine the ethics and social implications of a wide range of biomedical research topics in an interdisciplinary manner. This dissertation specifically examines how the federal government became an influential venue for discussing bioethics and identifying ethical, social, and legal issues with research, and how social implications concerns developed and became part of bioethics. It reveals how during the 1960s those inside and outside biomedical research identified bioethical issues and debated their social responsibility, and how Congress become increasingly interested in the research that they were funding as well as in its implications on society. Throughout the chapters this dissertation follows the development of the field of bioethics, adding on to it with the history of the government's role in bioethics and with the details of social implications concerns that were distinct from concerns over medical ethics or human experimentation ethics. I argue that three key senators, Walter F. Mondale (D-MN), Fred Harris (D-OK), and Edward Kennedy (D-MA), worked with and also challenged the assertions of physicians and researchers on the need to examine social consequences of biomedicine, and in that process they dramatically reshaped the involvement of non-scientists and non-physicians in discussions of biomedical research. These Senators also brought public attention to difficult issues in biomedicine and established a public realm for bioethics discussions.

▼ This dissertation consists of two essays on testing hypotheses in panel data models when non-stationarity exists in the model. This is done under the high-dimensional framework where both n (cross-section dimension) and T (time series dimension) are large. In the first essay, I discuss the limiting distribution of the t-statistic; using different panel data estimators and propose using the t-statistic based on Feasible GLS estimator. In the second essay, I develop the bootstrap
F-statistic for cross-sectional independence in a panel data model with factor
structure.
The first essay considers the problem of hypotheses testing in a simple panel data regression model with random individual effects and serially correlated disturbances. Following Baltagi, Kao and Liu (2008), I allow for the possibility of non-stationarity in the regressor and/or the disturbance term. While Baltagi et al. (2008) focus on the asymptotic properties and distributions of the standard panel data estimators, this essay focuses on test of hypotheses in this setting. One important finding, is that unlike the time series case, one does not necessarily need to rely on the "super-efficient" type AR estimator by Perron and Yabu (2009) to make inference in panel data. In fact, I show that the simple t-ratio always converges to the standard normal distribution regardless of whether the disturbances and/or the regressor are stationary. One caveat is that this may not be robust to heteroskedasticity of the error terms, but it is robust to heterogenous AR parameters across individuals. The Monte Carlo simulations in support of all the results are also provided in this essay.
The second essay discusses testing hypotheses of cross-sectional dependence in a panel data model with an introduction of factor
structure. Following Bai (2003, 2004, 2009) and Bai, Kao and Ng (2009), I again allow for the possibility of non-stationarity in the regressor and the factor. I give attention to test of hypotheses using
F-tests in this setting. The limiting distribution of
F-statistics under the high-dimensional framework has not been derived yet in the literature perhaps because of its theoretical complexity. To circumvent this difficulty, this essay suggests the use of wild bootstrap
F-tests based on simulation results under various cases where both regressors and factors can be stationary or non-stationary. The Monte Carlo results show that the bootstrap
F-tests perform well in testing cross-sectional independence and are recommended in practice. They have the advantage of being feasible even when we do not observe the factors and do not require for formal theoretical approximations. It is also shown that the bootstrap
F-tests are robust to heteroskedasticity but sensitive to serial correlation.

This work aims at controlling the deposition process of silicon oxynitride thin films by reactivesputtering from a silicon target. It is also focused on some correlations between structural andoptical properties of the films in order to produce antireflective multilayers. SiNy and SiOx films aresputter deposited by three different reactive processes. A continuous reactive gas injection(conventional process: CP) or a periodical supply by means of exponential pulses is implemented(RGPP process). The third process is based on a controlled orientation of the substrate (GLADtechnique). These films are analyzed by electronic spectroscopy and electronic microscopy forcomposition and morphology, respectively. The optical properties are determined by UV-Vis-IRspectroscopy. Moreover, theoretical simulations on structural silicon nitride and oxide areperformed so as to better understand optical properties of the films. Last but not least, this workleads to the growth and study of SiNy/SiOx antireflective multilayers used in the visible range anddeposited on different kind of substrates.

The objective of this dissertation is to identify the effects of trade costs on the quality structure of international trade flows. In chapter one we empirically analyze the determinants of Cognac export flows and emphasize the role of trade costs. We show that, as with other luxury products, the elasticity of Cognac exports to distance is negative and relatively small. Meanwhile, average customs duties do not have a significant impact on the intensive margin, but we find that they negatively affect the probability of trade, after correcting for an endogeneity bias. In chapter two we empirically test the validity of the Alchian and Allen effect that states that per-unit charges increase the relative demand of higher quality goods. We use data on Cognac exports by quality designations. The measure of Cognac quality is objective and invariant over time. Our results show that distance and specific duties increase the share of exports of higher quality Cognac. We also examine the impact of containerization on Cognac's quality mix from 1967 to 2013. In chapter three we build a theoretical model of a North-South duopoly where firms compete in prices on both markets. We use this framework to study the impact of several trade policy instruments (import tariff, quota and quality standard) on the product R&D investment of the Northern firm. Our results show that the Northern…
