▼ Neurons tuned to binocular disparity in area V1 are hypothesized to be responsible for short latency binocular vergence movements, which align the two eyes on the same object as it moves in depth. Disparity selective neurons in V1 are not only selective to disparity, but also to other visual stimulus dimensions, in particular orientation. In this work, we explore the role of neurons tuned to different orientations in binocular vergence control. We train an artificial binocular vision system to execute corrective vergence movements based on the outputs of disparity selective neurons tuned to different orientations and scales. We find that neurons tuned to non-vertical orientations have strong effect on the vergence eye movements. Although adding neurons tuned to non-vertical orientations does not appear to improve vergence tracking accuracy, we find that neurons tuned to non-vertical orientations still play critical roles in binocular vergence control. First, they increase the robustness of policy to the noise. Second, they also increase the effective range of vergence control. We also compare the effect of different learning algorithms for the control policy. In particular, we compare the use of Attention Gated Reinforcement Learning (AGReL) method, which was used in prior work on this task, with the Natural Actor-Critic method. We show that the performance of the Natural Actor-Critic method surpasses that of AGReL. Although based upon the same input, control policies learned by AGReL can only exploit information about the sign of stereo disparity while the control policies learned by the Natural Actor-Critic method can exploit information about both the sign and magnitude of stereo disparity, leading to faster system responses. Using the Natural Actor-Critic algorithm, we show that the addition of non-vertically oriented disparity selective neurons enables the use of a wider range of vergence commands, which also speeds up the system. ▼ Human eyes see the same object from slightly different viewpoints. Unless the object is placed at infinity, our eyes have to verge towards each other in order to fixate on the same object. Such vergence eye movements are also coupled to appropriate accommodation changes of our eyes in order to focus on the object. Unfortunately, this coupling is disturbed when viewing current binocular displays. On binocular displays, images with correct stereoscopic depth cues can be presented to induce appropriate vergence eye movements. However, the lens focus of such displays is typically fixed regardless of changing depth cues. This posts an un-natural demand on the viewer’s eyes since the viewing condition demands vergence movement in the absence of appropriate accommodation changes. This thesis studies, for the first time, the effects of matching lens focus with stereoscopic depth cues on the time taken to form a single stereoscopic image when viewing a binocular micro-display. A micro-display system with dynamically adjustable lens focus was designed and prototyped for this study. The design and prototyping work forms part of the contribution of the thesis. An experiment was then conducted to study the time taken to merge a pair of left and right binocular images into a single stereoscopic image under four viewing conditions that exhaust the combinations of two lens focus (40cm and 200cm) and two object depths (40cm and 200cm). Results indicate that viewers took significantly shorter time to form a single overlaid stereoscopic image when the lens focus matched with the object depth (p<0.05, paired t test). Further examinations of the data suggest that unnatural demand for the eyes to diverge (e.g., lens focus was smaller than the object depth) are associated with significantly longer periods of double images. Among the ten viewers, seven consistently and significantly benefited from the effect of matching lens focus with stereoscopic depth cues but three viewers did not. The relationships between individuals’ performance in the study and their visual parameters have been studied. Significant correlations are found between the time taken to form a single stereoscopic image and the negative fusional reserve of the participants. The work of this thesis evaluates the potential benefits of applying dynamically adjustable lens focus to the future design of binocular micro-displays.

▼ When viewing a real object, our eyes will accommodate to focus at the object. At the same time, our eyes will also verge so that the visual axis of both eyes will point towards that object. In other words, the vergence of eyes will change in accordance to the accommodation of the eyes. However this relationship may be disturbed when viewing stereo images with changing stereo depths presented on a binocular display with fixed lens focus. The incompatibility between the varying stereo depth and the fixed lens focus can post an unnatural demand on human vergence eye movements. This may cause eye fatigue. An experiment has been conducted to investigate the levels of eye fatigue caused by viewing stereo images with changing stereo depths on a binocular display with compatible and incompatible lens focuses. Four viewing conditions have been studied and they exhaust the factorial combinations of two lens focus (40cm and 200cm) and two changing stereo depth cues (40cm ± 0.3 dioptres and 200cm ± 0.3 dioptres). This design examines the effects of lens focus, stero depth, and their interactions (i.e., compatibility between lens focus and stereo depth). In this study, we are interested in the compatibility effects when the lens focus or stereo depth is controlled at 40cm and 200cm, respectively. When using a binocular display with fixed lens focus of 200cm, viewing stereo images with incompatible stereo depths (40cm) can significantly increase the rated levels of eye fatigue (p<0.001, F1,383 = 33, ANOVA). This is an important finding and carries serious implications to those manufacturers of binocular displays with fixed lens focus of 200cm (e.g., iMD Ltd.). Unfortunately, adjusting the lens focus of the displays to 40cm to match the stereo depths of the images did not result in significant reduction in eye fatigue (p>0.5, F1,383 = 0.36, ANOVA). The lack of benefits is due to an opposite confounding effects of accommodation on eye fatigue: as the lens focus is reduced to match with the stereo depth, the accommodative demand on the eyes is increased. The former reduces the levels of eye fatigue while the latter does the opposite. Data also indicate that when the confounding effect of accommodation is in agreement with the compatibility effects between lens focus and stereo depth, very significant reduction in rated levels of eye fatigue are reported when lens focus is changed from 40cm to 200cm in order to match with images of stereo depths of 200cm ((p<0.001, F1,383 = 55.5, ANOVA). Qui n’a jamais souhaité avoir des yeux derrière la tête ? Cette thèse propose d’étudier l’extension du champ visuel humain, que ce soit dans le monde réel ou dans un environnement virtuel. Nous avons d’abord conçu FlyVIZ, un dispositif qui permet d’augmenter le champ visuel. Il est composé d’une caméra catadioptrique, d’un visiocasque et d’un algorithme de traitement d’image. Lorsqu’un utilisateur porte ce dispositif, il dispose d’une vue à 360 degrés de son environnement. Le prototype a été testé avec succès dans différents scenarios, comme attraper un objet tendu dans le dos sans tourner la tête, ou passer des portes en marchant à reculons. Ensuite nous avons proposé une nouvelle méthode pour le rendu d’environnements virtuels, avec un champ visuel étendu, et en temps réel. Pour résoudre les problèmes dus à l’utilisation de projections non planes, nous avons ajouté une nouvelle étape dans le pipeline graphique. Notre méthode a ensuite été adaptée au rendu stéréoscopique avec un champ visuel de 360°. Nous avons mené une évaluation préliminaire sur l’utilisation d’un champ visuel étendu appliqué à une tache de navigation dans des environnements virtuels. Nos résultats semblent confirmer que l’utilisation d’un champ visuel étendu permet une navigation plus efficace, en diminuant le temps moyen pour effectuer une tache. Parmi les différentes projections non planes testées, une préférence pour les projections équirectangulaire et de Hammer a été exprimée. Nous avons également traité le problème de conflit d’indice de profondeurs rencontré dans les images stéréoscopiques lorsqu’un objet affiché en parallaxe négative est partiellement occulté par un bord du support d’affichage. Nous avons proposé SCVC (Stereoscopy Compatible Volume Clipping, le découpage de la scène selon le volume compatible avec la stéréoscopie) pour résoudre ce problème en n’affichant que la partie de l’espace qui n’est pas sujette au conflit d’indice de profondeur. La méthode a été évaluée et les résultats ont montrés que SCVC améliore significativement la perception de la profondeur et que les utilisateurs expriment une préférence pour cette méthode. L’extension du champ visuel humain ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour l’exploration ou la surveillance de l’environnement d’un utilisateur. Cette extension pourrait bénéficier à diverses applications, que ce soit dans le contexte d’un environnement réel ou virtuel. Pour la sécurité des personnes ou la défense, des pompiers, des policiers ou des soldats pourraient tirer avantage d’un champ visuel étendu. Ce type de visualisation peut également profiter à l’exploration rapide d’environnements virtuels ou à la recherche d’objet dans ces derniers.

▼ Stereo matching is one of the most active research topics in computer vision. The generated depth maps are widely used in many applications such as 3D reconstruction, 3DTV, object recognition, autonomous systems, etc. Stereo matching generally performs four steps: 1. matching cost computation; 2. cost aggregation; 3. disparity computation; and 4. disparity refinement. In this thesis, we propose some approaches to improve the performance of each step. Meanwhile, specially designed matching algorithms are proposed for the applications to HDR imaging and free view generation. Firstly, we propose a novel matching cost computation algorithm named Optimal Local Adaptive Radiometric Compensation (LARAC), which is robust to the radiometric differences caused by illumination and exposure variations. In LARAC, we approximate the spatially varying Pixel Value Correspondence Function (PVCF) as a locally consistent polynomial with an optimal window size, where the polynomial coefficients are estimated optimally with a closed-form solution. The simulation results suggest that the proposed LARAC outperforms other state-of-the-art stereo algorithms. Secondly, we improve the performance of the cost aggregation step in stereo matching. While many existing cost aggregation algorithms trade off between accuracy and computational complexity, we propose a novel algorithm named Stereo Matching by Adaptive and Recursive Technologies (SMART) which has low complexity while maintaining high accuracy. In SMART, a novel cost aggregation algorithm is proposed to increase the accuracy and a recursive cost aggregation algorithm is invented to reduce the aggregation complexity from O(n²) to O(1). Thirdly, a novel disparity refinement algorithm, named hybrid plane fitting, with low complexity and high accuracy is proposed. We propose a novel robust cross checking algorithm to exclude outliers in the disparity maps. According to the outlier percentage of each plane, we propose a hybrid method, either RANSAC based plane fitting, or the proposed weighted LSE based plane fitting, to estimate the plane parameters and refine the disparity maps accordingly. Fourthly, a multi-exposed stereo camera system for high dynamic range imaging is proposed. The stereo setup captures two images simultaneously and allows for HDR image composition for dynamic scenes and HDR videos. A specially designed algorithm named Multi-exposed stereo matching (MEX) is proposed to generate accurate disparity maps from two images with different exposure times. Image warping is performed afterwards to generate two aligned images, with the warping errors detected by the proposed warping error detection algorithm. A HDR image is recovered by the two aligned images, with the unreliable pixels interpolated by the proposed radiance consistent hole filling algorithm. In this work, we propose an efficient hierarchical multi-task vision system that integrates stereo and texture cues to accomplish automatic multi-view face detection and head pose estimation. This hierarchical structure is inspired by the hierarchical signal processing in the primate visual cortex, where different perceptual tasks share the same early visual representations and more complex features are extracted from simpler features. It appears that the visual cortex of different kinds of animals use normalized Gabor features as early visual representations. We demonstrate that the same bank of normalized four-orientation Gabor features, improves face detection, disparity detection and head pose estimation. The multi-view face detector based on discrete normalized Gabor features has state-of-the-art performance. Integrating disparity detectors based on disparity energy features extracted from the normalized Gabor features improves both the efficiency and the accuracy of the face detector. Disparity information enables us to filter out 90% of image locations as being less likely to contain faces. Performance is improved because the filtering rejects 32% of the false detections made by a similar monocular detector with the same recall rate. The same normalized Gabor features are also a robust representation for pose estimation. In particular, in the normalized Gabor feature space faces with similar poses are closer than in other feature spaces. Pose estimation with these features using nonlinear regression based on the Weighted K Nearest-Neighbor (WKNN) performs better than previously reported approaches on the same database under more complex illumination conditions. Combining multi-view face detector and pose estimator, we build up an efficient automatic head pose estimator. We further improve the efficiency of pose estimation using local linear regression method. This method combines multi-class classification with linear regression. This method generates similar estimation accuracy as WKNN estimator, but the computation time is just 5% of that of WKNN estimator. This system is very efficient. Our implementation on a PC equipped with an i5 2.66GHz CPU and a Nvidia GTX 465 graphic card takes only 42.0ms to detect faces on a 640 x 480 stereo image pair, and only an additional 0.13ms to estimate the pose of each detected face.

▼ The purpose of this study was to analyse factors inhibiting the learning of mathematical skills among pupils with hearing impairments. The objectives of the study were to identify mathematical skills taught to hearing impaired pupils in lower basic classes. The study further looked at the mode of communication used in the teaching of mathematical skills to hearing impaired pupils, establishing instructional strategies used and their impact on the learning of mathematical skills among pupils with hearing impairments. Assessment of the availability of educational resources and their suitability in the learning of mathematical skills among pupils with hearing impairments was also investigated. Four schools were randomly selected for investigation in 2006. The instruments used in the data collection included structured interviews, semi-structured interviews and observation schedule for the teachers of hearing impaired pupils and focus group discussion guide for pupils with hearing impairments. The collected data provided both qualitative and quantitative information.The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was employed to analyse the quantitative data. The data were presented in tables, percentages and charts. Qualitative data from interviews were coded and emerging themes were grouped into categories using constant comparative analysis technique.The results of the study revealed that there were inadequate specialized teachers to teach pupils with hearing impairments. The study also found out that pupils with hearing impairments faced a lot of problems in learning mathematical skills and these came about as a result of inadequate teaching and learning materials, lack of remedial work to help hearing impaired pupils improve in learning mathematical skills and seconded teachers who were not conversant with sign language. The factors inhibiting pupils with hearing impairments learn mathematical skills emanated from teachers' poor teaching strategies and non-availability of educational resources suitable in learning and teaching of mathematical skills among pupils with hearing impairments.The teacher is the key contributor to pupils' learning of mathematical skills and as such, take centre stage in the success or failure in acquiring and developing mathematical skills among pupils with hearing impairments. Further, the pupils' inhibiting factor of not learning mathematical skills was characterized by inadequate teaching skills from teachers, insufficient learning materials, failure of classroom communication, inadequate skills of sign language and the relationship between teachers and pupils. This was especially observed during the time of learning. The study recommended that schools where the hearing impaired pupils learn be provided with learning aids for them to grasp mathematical skills.Teachers of the hearing impaired pupils need to be adequately trained to be able to use different methods and strategies. Teachers must be conversant with sign language.

▼ The primary objective of this study was to develop a dashboard for the consolidation of multiple forecasts utilising a range of multiple linear regression models. The term dashboard is used to describe with a single word the characteristics of the forecasts consolidation application that was developed to provide the required functionalities via a graphical user interface structured as a series of interlinked screens. Microsoft Excel© was used as the platform to develop the dashboard named ConFoRM (acronym for Consolidate Forecasts with Regression Models). The major steps of the consolidation process incorporated in ConFoRM are: 1. Input historical data. 2. Select appropriate analysis and holdout samples. 3. Specify regression models to be considered as candidates for the final model to be used for the consolidation of forecasts. 4. Perform regression analysis and holdout analysis for each of the models specified in step 3. 5. Perform post-holdout testing to assess the performance of the model with best holdout validation results on out-of-sample data. 6. Consolidate forecasts. Two data transformations are available: the removal of growth and time-periods effect from the time series; a translation of the time series by subtracting ̅i, the mean of all the forecasts for data record i, from the variable being predicted and its related forecasts for each data record i. The pre-defined regression models available for ordinary least square linear regression models (LRM) are: a. A set of k simple LRM’s, one for each of the k forecasts; b. A multiple LRM that includes all the forecasts: c. A multiple LRM that includes all the forecasts and as many of the first-order interactions between the input forecasts as allowed by the sample size and the maximum number of predictors provided by the dashboard with the interactions included in the model to be those with the highest individual correlation with the variable being predicted; d. ▼ With the rapid growth of communication networks and services, design of distributed algorithm for resource allocation in wired and wireless networks has attracted more and more research interests in recent years. Different from many technique-based centralized algorithms, pricing-based distributed algorithm exploits economic-driven behaviors of network users and thus is more transparent and incentive-compatible. A typical example is that pricing takes the form of “shadow price” to indicate the scarcity of limited resource and thus generates an efficient allocation distributedly. In this thesis, we study two applications of pricing scheme (and the corresponding distributed algorithm design) in communication networks, namely, (i) distributed resource allocation in Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) networks, and (ii) revenue maximization for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with limited capability of utility-extraction. Facing with the severe problem of spectrum scarcity, the concept of dynamic spectrum access has been proposed to tackle inefficiency of the static spectrum management policy by leveraging a secondary spectrum utilization. In spite of its simple objective, implementation of DSA networks is much more challenging. The past decade has witnessed a joint effort from engineering, economics, and regulation communities on DSA networks research. By envisioning different capabilities of DSA networks, different models, namely, the Open Sharing model, the Hierarchical Access model, and the Dynamic Exclusive Usage model, have been proposed. In the first part of this thesis, we first study resource allocations (mainly the rate and power allocations) for DSA networks based on these different models. First, based on the Dynamic Exclusive Usage model, we study the joint pricing and power allocation for DSA networks with the Stackelberg game model. Specifically, Primary User (PU) has the power control flexibility and is willing to share its channel with Secondary User (SU) to obtain extra revenue by charging the cochannel interference. In response, SU pays the interference cost to obtain transmission opportunity. Pricing has two purposes in our model, namely, (i) to motivate PU’s channel sharing and (ii) to motivate SU’s efficient utilization of PU’s channel. Because of its Quality of Service (QoS) requirement, PU faces a tradeoff between charging SU and consuming its own power cost. We quantify the benefits that PU and SU can obtain from the sharing model and derive the stability condition for the sharing model. We further analyze two extensions. The first extension is the single PU multiple SUs scenario, where PU allows multiple SUs to share its channel simultaneously with the objective of revenue maximization. The second extension is the multiple PUs multiple SUs scenario, where each PU can only share its channel with one SU (and vice versa). This dissertation studies the optimal allocation for conjunctive use of surface and groundwater. The optimal model defines economic principles which determine the spatial allocation of surface and groundwater, the level of conveyance expenditure, the level of on-farm investment in water conservation, and shadow prices of surface and groundwater. The static spatial model identifies the economic principles which govern water allocation for conjunctive use of surface and groundwater. Two models, seepage in the canal and seepage in the canal and on the field are considered. The optimal water allocation is examined with fixed on-farm investment in water conservation and with different canal loss rates. The static base model is extended to incorporate endogenous on-farm investment in water conservation and to consider the effect of the seepage rate on choice of technology, conveyance expenditure, water allocation and land rents. Analytical results are obtained for endogenous crop choice when land quality is homogeneous and shadow price of water is spatially increasing. The study compares the effects of heterogeneous land quality, changes in output price, pumping cost, uniform price for groundwater, and uniform prices for water such as the marginal cost of water generation at the source. The spatial dynamic model of conjunctive water use defines conditions which govern the intertemporal and spatial optimal allocation of water. Five important results are as follows: (i) When seepage is small, the conjunctive use model does not make a significant difference, and the surface water model is a good approximation of the conjunctive use model. (ii) Additional seepage from the field generates a positive externality to water consumers and the resulting optimal shadow price of water is less than the shadow price of the utility. (iii) An output price increase, heterogeneous land quality, and a fixed price for water generate huge aggregate land rents. (iv) Spatial inequity of land rents is worsened by heterogeneous land quality. (v) Temporal allocation of water resources is governed by the Hotelling rule variant similar to the optimal allocation rule for exhaustible resources.

The HJM framework was originally introduced for the modelling of the dynamics of the instantaneous forward rates in the fixed income market. This approach was later extended to the case with uncertainties described by a Gaussian random field, which is termed as the random field HJM model. In this thesis, this approach is extended and applied to both equity and credit markets. In each case, it is shown that how to yield a consistent condition such that the market is arbitrage-free or the market observables are martingales. In the first part, this approach is applied to the equity market. A unified framework is proposed for the joint modelling of an index and its local volatility surface. This model enables index and volatility derivatives to be priced consistently and reproduces empirical features of the equity market, including the strong negative correlation between the changes of SPX and VIX, any observed term structure of variance swap rates, and the volatility skews and term structures observed in SPX and VIX options. Starting from an initial collection of index options and their associated local volatility surface, it is shown in the framework of the HJM philosophy that how to construct the arbitrage-free evolution of this local volatility surface from a Gaussian random field. The relationship between the local volatility model and the variance rate model is also presented. In the end, it is shown that how to implement this model numerically by the Monte Carlo simulation and the finite difference method, and how to simultaneously calibrate to the prices of SPX options and VIX options across strikes and maturities. In the second part, this approach is applied to the credit market. Contagion credit and counterparty credit risks are two of the central topics in the credit risk management after the sub-prime crisis. Starting from a Gaussian random field, it is shown in the framework of the HJM philosophy that how to construct the dynamics of the conditional joint density of the default times given the risk-free market information via the change-of-measure technique. It is a top-down approach in the analysis of the contagion credit risk with multiple default events. In the same framework, the dynamics of the forward risk-free rate can also be described and a general pricing formula for credit products can be derived. Furthermore, this contagion model is applied to the pricing of the credit valuation adjustment by taking into account the unilateral or bilateral counterparty credit risk. The influence of the default of the counterparty on the underlying reference entity is considered so as to avoid the wrong-way risk in particular. Finally, the bilateral credit valuation adjustment for credit default swaps is illustrated through a numerical study.

The dispersion of inert pollutants over urban areas has been studied for a long time. However, the dispersion of chemically reactive pollutants is not well known. Nowadays, the popular research topics mainly focus on the phenomena of the pollutant dispersion over complicated city morphologies, but limited studies have attempted to explore the mechanism of reactive pollutant dispersion. In this thesis, the incompressible large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with chemical transport equations is developed to simulate the turbulent flows and the associated chemical reactions. The isothermal condition is applied to create the neutral stratification. The titration of ozone (O3) and the photolysis of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) take place in the computational domain filled with O3 of 1 ppm. The source of nitric oxide (NO) with the mixing ratio of 1 ppm, 10 ppm, 100 ppm or 1000 ppm is placed on the ground surface of the first street canyon. The idealized 2D street canyons are used so as to provide a parameterized description of the urban roughness, and the roughness is controlled by the aspect ratio (AR) of the building height to the street width with the range from 1 to 1/8. The results show that the physical parameters such as the friction factor, the Reynolds shear stress, and the turbulent kinetic energy increase significantly with decreasing AR from 1 to 1/8. However, the influence of the AR value to the turbulent timescales is limited to a relatively small range. Although the pollutant is actually emitted at the ground level, it is reasonable to assume that the pollutant is effectively emitted and reflected at the roof level when the plume of the pollutant dispersion in the roughness sublayer (RSL) are studied for idealized street canyon models with uniform buildings. The plume size analysis shows that the dispersion of nonreactive pollutants is enhanced by higher friction factors. However, based on the NO mixing ratio and the AR value, the available configurations with the ozone titration can be divided into group (A) and group (B), which are respectively characterised by the timescale ratios of NO and O3. In group (A), the NO dispersion is suppressed, but the NO2 dispersion is enhanced. In group (B), the NO dispersion is enhanced, while the NO2 dispersion keeps in line with nonreactive pollutants. For the more realistic NOx - O3 cycle, group (A) has similar relations as the ozone titration, but the NO and NO2 dispersions in group (B) are not significantly changed by chemical reactions. According to the similarity analysis, the findings in this study can be generalized to other situations with similar Damköhler numbers.
