Acquiring point clouds of indoor environments became increasingly accessible in recent years. However, the resulting 3D point cloud data is unstructured, and does not contain enough information to be useful for complex tasks like pathfinding. Indoor models which are currently derived from point clouds do not include furniture and stairs. The necessary graph to enable multi-storey pathfinding is not available in the point cloud. This thesis proposes a workflow to semantically enrich indoor point clouds using an octree data structure. Meaning is added to the point cloud scene that allows to act as a basis for a graph. This graph can then follow navigation constraints of humans through an indoor environment. The approach for semantic enrichment of this study is capable of separating storeys, detecting floors, walls, stairs and obstacles like furniture. Strict preconditions are used, like walls being perpendicular to each other and using noise free point clouds. The implementation works as a proof of concept and the octree proves to be a helpful data structure. The contribution is a novel approach of using octrees for the semantic enrichment of indoor point clouds, including the detection of stairs. Combining and extending different works from various fields of research helped to develop the presented methodology. The semantic classification of floors and stairs in 3D point clouds allows to create a graph across multiple storeys. A big part of the methodology was implemented and tested on different types of buildings and scanned with dissimilar kinds of laser scanners. Mobile scanners were found to be advantageous, because they are less dependent on the line of sight. On top of that, they can provide a path of the scanner, which is precious information that can support several structuring improvements of the acquired data. The octree generalises the point cloud to leafs and adds a structure to the empty space. This does not only improve the calculation performance, but also provides more distinguishable results. Concluding, the thesis proposes to extent the framework to cover a wider range of architectural structures. Furthermore, future research should deepen the knowledge for the stair detection of the presented conceptual framework. As the representation of stairs differ for every scanner, future research should focus on point clouds acquired by one kind of scanner first.

▼ The majority of stroke survivors return to living in the community; however, muscle weakness and cardiovascular deconditioning can restrict mobility, limit community access and independence, particularly when challenging activities like stair negotiation are involved. A “step-by-step” (SBS) strategy (both feet per step) may be adopted in lieu of a “step-over-step” (SOS) method (one foot per step) to increase stability and off-load the paretic limb though the physical demands of the two methods are unknown. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the strength and energy demands of the two stair-stepping strategies in chronic stroke compared to healthy adults. The first study identified the relative strength and aerobic demands of both strategies. The results showed that the stroke group produced similar peak joint moments compared to controls, despite their slower cadence suggesting that the stroke group exerts comparable ‘effort’ to move more slowly. The SBS method was associated with lower strength costs (relative to individuals’ maximum strength output) than SOS, however aerobic cost was significantly higher. The second study identified the mechanical energy expenditures (MEEs) and transfers related to both strategies. The MEEs were found to be lower when the SBS strategy was used. Though expenditures were similar between groups, the stroke group had higher expenditures associated with the work of the less affected knee extensors (lead limb) during ascent and descent and controls exhibited higher expenditures for the plantarflexors during ascent. The reduced output of the trail (affected) limb plantarflexors likely resulted in the increased workload of the knee extensors. Overall, the aerobic cost per step was higher in stroke, particularly during descent, suggesting that in addition to reducing cadence, persons with stroke may be co-contracting to increase stabilization during descent, thus increasing oxygen demands. This thesis provides novel information on the physical demands associated with two methods of stair negotiation demonstrating that the SBS strategy might be better suited to persons with chronic stroke by minimizing the strength demands on the paretic side, but the benefit comes at an elevated aerobic cost. This information is valuable to rehabilitation professionals engaged in retraining mobility to facilitate community reintegration.

▼ Stairs are a frequently encountered obstacle in daily life. The ability to negotiate stairs without difficulty or pain is important to quality of life. Although it is a simple task for healthy persons, ascending and descending stairs can be very challenging when motor functions are diminished (e.g., in elderly persons, persons with physical disabilities and in persons who have experienced trauma to their lower extremities). Conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy (CP), osteoarthritis (OA) both before and after total knee replacement (TKR), and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries impair the ability to negotiate stairs. Because many individuals with neuromuscular impairments walk and ascend/descend stairs slowly, it is important to isolate functional task from other factors such as age, muscle weakness, etc. Previous studies have developed the normative data for kinematics, kinetics and muscles or groups of muscles that contribute to specific subtasks of walking at various speeds. However, the normative data for various speeds of stair climbing, as prevalent a task and as periodic as level over the ground walking, has yet to be established. The purpose of this thesis is to create a normative database characterizing the effect of speed on the biomechanics in healthy young adults while ascending and descending stairs. Kinematic, kinetic and EMG data was collected for 12 healthy subjects while ascending/descending stairs at three speeds (slow, self selected, and quick). Computational modeling was employed in ViconNexus and OpenSim to determine joint angles, joint flexion moments, ground reaction forces and muscle activations during stair ascending/descending at the three speeds. Peak ground reaction forces, peak flexion angles, peak flexion and extension moments and angles at foot strike, midtstance and foot off were compared during stair climbing for the three speeds using a one-way ANOVA (p less than 0.05) with repeated measures. Post hoc analysis was performed with paired t-tests and a bonferroni correction factor of p less than 0.025. The work in this thesis determined the effects of changing stair climbing speed on lower extremity joint kinematics and kinetics. Joint angles were found to vary significantly for both ascending and descending stair trials, but less for descending. Internal joint flexion moments did not change significantly for ascending stairs, but were more varied in descending stairs. Peak ground reaction forces were found to vary significantly with speed and increased with speed. Average peak EMG activations and and activation timing was found to increase as speed increased, as well. The research conducted in this thesis is the preliminary work towards creating a normative database characterizing the effects of speed in ascending and descending stairs in healthy young adults. As Escadas Não São Só Escadas apresenta um estudo centrado na escada como dispositivo em arquitetura além da sua função primeira de ligar pavimentos de diferentes alturas. O estudo da superação da funcionalidade da escada, permite-nos ler este elemento, como um elemento que pode enfatizar ou reduzir a leitura do espaço em volta. As escadas deixam a sua função e passam a ser a peça única do espaço, o sujeito em que todos os olhares se centram. Pretende-se compreender a escada como elemento arquitetónico independente e autónomo, de enorme relevância na arquitetura, e não apenas como mera «infraestrutura», até porque nesse sentido, têm vindo a perder importância devido às alternativas que surgem e exigências legais de acessibilidade crescentes. Como elemento arquitetónico reconhecível no conjunto da obra arquitetónica, a escada pode ser estudada isoladamente. Não existindo outro estudo do género, propõe-se aqui uma análise acerca da escada aqui em Portugal. Para isso, propõe-se a realização de uma amostra de escadas recolhidas nas imagens de alguns dos principais livros de arquitetura que abordam as várias épocas históricas portuguesas da disciplina. Desta forma, pretende-se que a amostra represente genericamente vários períodos da história da arquitetura do nosso país. Não se pretende fazer uma análise histórica, apenas que na amostra estejam representados exemplos alargados temporalmente. Esta dissertação serve sobretudo para termos consciência deste elemento de uma forma menos histórica e mais espacial, na tentativa de que o valor das escadas seja reconhecido.

Stairs Are Not Just Stairs presents a study centered on the stair, as device in architecture beyond its first function of connecting floors of different heights. The study of overcoming the functionality of the stair allows us to read this element as an element that can emphasize or reduce the reading of the surrounding space. It is intended to understand the stair as an architectural independent and autonomous device, of enormous relevance in architecture, and not only simply an «infrastructure», even because in that way, have been losing importance due to the alternatives that arise and the growing accessibility legal requirement. As a recognizable architectural element in the set of architectural work, the staircase can be studied as an isolated element. As there is no other study of this kind, it is proposed here an analysis about the stair in Portugal. For this, it is proposed to accomplish a sample of stairs, collected in images of some of the main architecture books that approach the various Portuguese historical epochs of the discipline. In this way, it is intended that the sample generically represents several periods of the architecture history of our country. It is not intended to make a historical analysis, but that in the sample are represented extended temporarily examples. ▼ Stairs serve as an essential nonstructural system within buildings, providing a safe means of egress as well as much needed access for emergency responders following an earthquake. Unfortunately, the state of knowledge regarding the seismic behavior of these critical systems is limited, despite the fact that past earthquakes repeatedly reveal that stair systems are highly vulnerable to damage even in low- or moderate-intensity earthquakes. As a result, disruptions to building functionality, delayed rescue operations, and life safety hazards ensue.To this end, this dissertation presents a first-of-its-kind experimental investigation of the seismic behavior of a prefabricated steel stair system incorporated in a full-scale five-story building shake table test program. These system-level tests allowed investigation of the seismic behavior of these systems under realistic installation and dynamic loading conditions. In this work, the modal characteristics of the stair system identified using white noise base excitation test data as well as the physical observations of the stair system during earthquake tests of increasing intensities are presented. Analysis of the earthquake response of the stair system particularly focuses on associating their behavior with the seismic demands of the test building and the associated implications on seismic design. These shake table tests highlight the seismic vulnerability of modern designed stair systems and in particular the importance of improving the deformability of flight-to-building connections.The second part of this work involves a comprehensive computational study to capture at first the salient seismic response characteristics of prefabricated steel stairs in isolated configurations and subsequently the key response characteristics of building-stair systems. Detailed three-dimensional finite element models of a pair of prefabricated steel stairs are developed and their efficacy evaluated through extensive comparison with experimental data. The validated modeling approach is then used in a parametric assessment of the seismic behavior of stair systems using a broader range of design variables commonly found in practice. Subsequently, a system-level numerical study is conducted to investigate the interaction between buildings and stair systems and the associated impacts on building response characteristics as well as estimated stair loss using a probabilistic seismic analysis framework. Simulation results indicate that although the presence of stairs does not significantly modify the seismic response of buildings, enhancing the stair deformability can effectively mitigate the severity of seismic damage and loss of these critical nonstructural systems.

▼ The ankle foot orthotic (AFO) has been around for centuries. They were created to augment functionality of an ankle damaged due to injury or disease. A common reason a patient might be prescribed an AFO is a condition called foot drop. Foot drop can be caused by many conditions, but the most common reason is a stroke. Foot drop can be characterized by the inability to raise and/or lower a patient's foot. This incapacitation of the patient's foot leads to unnatural gaits and joint fatigue, as well as increasing the patient's likelihood of tripping and becoming seriously injured. Hard plastic AFOs that hold a patient's foot in a neutral position are the current standard for combating foot drop. These AFOs come in many different shapes and sizes, which emphasizes the wide variety in functionality of someone with foot drop. Unfortunately, the restrictive nature of the AFO can cause unnatural movements in the patient's foot; these unnatural tendencies are more exaggerated when walking down stairs and ramps, as the natural gait is to land toe first, the opposite of what the brace allows the patient to do. The purpose of this project is to create a sensor system for an AFO to help identify varying terrain. In the future this information can then be made to control an active AFO. Each terrain type will be first measured by a pair of simple infrared range finder, attached on the lower leg, one range finder looks ahead of the user and the other looks straight down at the ground. Models for the ground conditions can be established by representing each with Fourier series created using RANdom Sample Consensus (RANSAC). RANSAC coefficients will be scaled off the rate of data coming in and gait speed. Each model has a period term so the data can easily be scaled to match the pattern of walking regardless of pace. Gait speed will be measured using the downward facing ankle-mounted rangefinder, but with a threshold to determine when the foot is in contact with the ground. Once this initial set-up is completed, the system can take in data live and provide a prediction of the type of ground the patient is walking over, using pattern recognition techniques. The hope for this project is that if the system can accurately predict the change in ground type from, for example, level walking to walking down a ramp, an AFO could then be made to adjust itself, giving the patient a more natural gait, even when encountering adverse conditions. A byproduct of constantly using a patient's own gait to measure ground type is the ability to track a patient's changing gait over time, giving therapists a valuable new tool for tracking progress in a patient. ▼ This study identified energy/emission baselines for comparison to the potential savings of new zero carbon buildings. In addition, tenant behavior was studied to see whether the usage of elevators and stairs changed from the initial office buildings to the new zero carbon building. Buildings are one of the largest energy users in many countries. As a result, it is essential to find ways to save energy and reduce emissions from buildings in order to achieve national emission reduction goals. Improvements in energy efficiency and carbon savings have already been demonstrated in building science research. In addition to the technology in the building envelop and heating/cooling systems, the choices made by users are important factors of overall building performance. In this study, one discretionary choice will be examined in detail: will people use a prominent central staircase instead of using the elevators? A certified Zero Carbon Design Office Building in Waterloo will be examined as a case study to determine whether moving into a high-performance building is associated with a corresponding change in pro-environment behavior, namely, the use of central stairs instead of the central elevators. Tenants of this new building include local businesses, a cleantech incubator, an environmental nonprofit organization and university groups. A five-year research plan was made for the case study and the building has served as a “living lab” for researchers to study the energy/emission performance improvements as well as behavior changes. This study has two main parts. First, the energy/emission baselines for the tenants were calculated based on the previous years’ data from the tenants’ old buildings. The main purpose of establishing the baselines was to identify the potential energy/emission savings. Second, human behavior changes were studied through the observation of tenant elevator and stair usage ratios. In previous literature, it was indicated that the preference of sustainable behavior – using stairs instead of elevators in office buildings – was complicated and affected by multiple factors such as building design, demographics, and interventions (engagement workshops/activities). In this study, the relationships between the use of elevator/stairs and some of the effective factors were identified, and a stair/elevator usage ratio was calculated. Finally, the energy consumption of using elevators in the zero carbon building was calculated. The results of this study showed that design influences behavior as a prominent central stairs can increase the proportion of people using stairs by 42%. The combination of net zero carbon building and general interventions (sustainability workshops) to encourage sustainable actions corresponded with increased stair use by 5% compared to pre-occupancy levels. Multiple factors affected people’s stairs choices: people on the second floor used stairs 29% more than those on the third floor; and people took the stairs 16% more often when descending compared to ascending.

▼ Over the last decade it has become increasingly popular to provide large public areas with gracefully designed 'flexible' staircases. One inherent characteristic of this type of construction is a low stiffness to mass ratio and hence a low natural frequency when compared to more traditional designs. A number of staircases have been found to be dynamically responsive to pedestrian traffic resulting in costly repairs. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the differences between human induced loading on floors with that on stairs. Experimental work carried out on a purpose built staircase showed that forces up to 3 times the static body weight were generated during fast descents while forces up to 2.5 times the static body weight were generated during fast ascents. The work also showed that first harmonic values generated while ascending were slightly higher than for descending whilst second harmonic values were up to 3 times greater for fast descents than for fast ascents. When compared with floor testing, stair testing produced first harmonic values nearly 2.5 times greater with second, third and fourth harmonic values nearly 3 times greater. The harmonic results for the flat testing were also incorporated into a new mathematical expression to predict peak accelerations on simply supported floors and footbridges. The experimental results were duplicated analytically by developing a computer program to calculate the vertical ground reaction forces from body segment positional data. Following a Newtonian approach, the predicted first harmonic values were 20% to 30% lower than actual while the second harmonic values were approximately the same. Monte Carlo simulation techniques were also used to model the effects of group loading on stairs. The simulations predicted enhancement factors (a multiplier on single subject loading) of 3 to 6 for smaller groups(< 9 people) and 4 for larger groups(> 25 people). If the experimental/analytical results are combined with the group loading predictions, the harmonic values for groups ascending or descending flexible staircase could be substantially increased. These results demonstrate that loading data from floors is highly inappropriate for staircase design.

When cities grow larger the demand for more residential buildings and public transport increases. To be able to meet the demands and still make the city compact the interest for underground facilities grows. Underground facilities come with some drawbacks, one example is the evacuation where the people are expected to evacuate upwards. This master thesis is aiming to further develop the research done on the subject by examining the impact of winter clothing. Two tests were performed in Skrapan, which is 25 floors high. The participants went up for 22 of the floors and were recorded during the ascending. Some of the participants had a pulse watch and a breathing mask, which measured the oxygen consumption. The median for the walking speed varied between 0,81 m/s and 0,56 m/s with regular clothing and 0,78 m/s to 0,57 m/s with winter clothes. In the building codes it says that 0,6 m/s should be used when calculating evacuation times when ascending stairs. The heart rate did not change significantly between the two tests. However, the oxygen consumption was higher with the jacket on. The participants would not have been able to keep going for much longer than 5 minutes with their current pace. According to the results in this master thesis 0,6 m/s is too high because in the tests that were made the participants were physically active and still couldn’t keep that speed up for the whole test. Due to the test being two days in a row, almost all of the participants walked slower the second time. However, the ones that walked with winter clothes the second day walked more slowly than the ones with regular clothes compared to the first day. Therefore, it is safe to say that the clothes do affect the walking speed of evacuating people and that more clothes i.e. warm shoes or a hat will have an even greater impact.

Riktlinjerna för utrymning uppåt är inte till för längre trappor, och är därför inte representativt för de nya användningsområdena. Vikten av att dimensionera utrymningsmöjligheterna utifrån vad dagens befolkning kan prestera är relevant för att säkerställa en trygg utrymning i händelse av en olycka. Examensarbetet inriktar sig därför på att vidareutveckla tidigare forskning om utrymning uppåt genom att undersöka hur gånghastigheterna i trappor påverkas av vinterkläder. Hälsofrämjande arbete är ett betydelsefullt arbetsområde inom folkhälsoarbetet för att förbättra befolkningens hälsa. Hälsofrämjande arbete innebär kunskap om friskfaktorer och välbefinnande. Arbetet utgår från sju grundläggande principer, där delaktighet är en av dem. Arbetet kan utföras på många olika arenor och av olika aktörer. En aktör är anhörigkonsulenter som arbetar med tillexempel riskgruppen anhöriga till personer med alkohol/narkotikaberoende- eller missbruksproblematik. Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur anhörigkonsulenten upplever hälsofrämjande arbete. Fem enskilda intervjuer har genomförts med två anhörigterapeuter, en anhörigkonsulent, en samtalsbehandlare och en rådgivare. En manifest innehållsanalys har valts och tillämpats i denna studie, där resultatet har kategoriserat utifrån "Delaktighetstrappan". I resultatet framkommer det att anhörigkonsulenterna upplever sig arbeta hälsofrämjande utifrån "Delaktighetstrappans" steg: information, konsultation, dialog samt inflytande/delaktighet. Slutsatserna är att "Delaktighetstrappans" ovan nämnda begrepp betyder hälsofrämjande arbete och upplevs som eget hälsofrämjande arbetssätt bland anhörigkonsulenterna. Däremot berörs inte begreppet: medbeslutande, eftersom intervjumaterialet inte omfattar något som kan kategoriseras in i trappans sista steg och blir därav inte berört i studien.

Health Promotion is an important working area in Public Health to improve health in a population. It implies knowledge of Health Promoting factors and well-being. Health Promotion is based on seven basic principles, which participation is one of them. It can be performed in many different settings and by different actors. One of these actors is a relative consultant who works with a risk group, for example family members or relatives of a person with alcohol/narcotic abuse problem. The purpose of this study was to examine how the relative consultant experience Health Promotion. Five individual interviews have been carried out with two relative therapists, a relative consultant, a conversation processor and a counselor. A manifest content analysis has been selected and applied in this study, where the result has been categorized based on "Staircase of participation". The result shows that the relative consultants are experiencing that they are working to Promote Health to relatives, based on steps in "Staircase of participation": information, consultation, dialogue and influence/participation. The conclusions is that the above-mentioned concepts of "Staircase of participation" meaning Health Promotion work is perceived by the relative consultants as their own working methods to Promote Health. However not the concept of: co-decision, because the interview material does not include anything that can be categorized into the last step in the stairs and therefore it has not been addressed in the study.

▼ Firefighting is a physically challenging occupation which demands high levels of energy exertion and can result in high levels of fatigue. The combination of slip, trip, and fall injuries with those caused by overexertion comprise a significant number of total firefighter injuries each year. To better assess the energy expenditure and exertion of firefighters during simulated firefighting activities, a standard firefighter facepiece was modified to interface with a portable metabolic monitoring device (Cosmed K4b2). This design allowed for the collection of metabolic data while the firefighter utilizes a standard self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as the air supply. This modified facepiece was then validated in a stationary bicycling variable-workload assessment with two metabolic measurement devices (the portable Cosmed K4b2 unit and a limited portability metabolic cart unit). These conditions were: (1) the standard mask with the Cosmed K4b2, (2) modified SCBA facepiece with the Cosmed K4b2, (3) standard headpiece with the metabolic cart, and (4) modified SCBA facepiece with the metabolic cart. These results showed the modified facepiece was an accurate and reliable tool for the collection of metabolic data, and is suitable for use in future studies which demand the collection of metabolic data while utilizing a SCBA system. Previous studies have attempted to simulate firefighting in safe, controlled environments, but a standard has yet to be developed. This study examined three protocols, each designed to simulate the environment and workload associated with firefighting. To assess the biomechanical differences between conditions, firefighters ascended and descended stairs before and immediately after activity. For half of the trials firefighters carried an asymmetrical hose load, as is commonly done on the fireground. Clearances of the heels and toes were examined over each stair edge. Some significant changes occurred due to condition, pre/post activity, and load carriage. These results can lead to the development of a standard for the simulation of firefighting and lead to reduced injuries on the fireground by allowing for a better understanding of how fatigue and load carriage affect firefighters.
