▼ The main focus of this thesis is the enhancement of the statistical framework employed for underdetermined T-F masking blind separation of speech. While humans are capable of extracting a speech signal of interest in the presence of other interference and noise; actual speech recognition systems and hearing aids cannot match this psychoacoustic ability. They perform well in noise and reverberant free environments but suffer in realistic environments. Time-frequency masking algorithms based on computational auditory scene analysis attempt to separate multiple sound sources from only two reverberant stereo mixtures. They essentially rely on the sparsity that binaural cues exhibit in the time-frequency domain to generate masks which extract individual sources from their corresponding spectrogram points to solve the problem of underdetermined convolutive speech separation. Statistically, this can be interpreted as a classical clustering problem. Due to analytical simplicity, a finite mixture of Gaussian distributions is commonly used in T-F masking algorithms for modelling interaural cues. Such a model is however sensitive to outliers, therefore, a robust probabilistic model based on the Student's t-distribution is first proposed to improve the robustness of the statistical framework. This heavy tailed distribution, as compared to the Gaussian distribution, can potentially better capture outlier values and thereby lead to more accurate probabilistic masks for source separation. This non-Gaussian approach is applied to the state-of the-art MESSL algorithm and comparative studies are undertaken to confirm the improved separation quality. A Bayesian clustering framework that can better model uncertainties in reverberant environments is then exploited to replace the conventional expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm within a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) framework. A variational Bayesian (VB) approach is then applied to the MESSL algorithm to cluster interaural phase differences thereby avoiding the drawbacks of MLE; specifically the probable presence of singularities and experimental results confirm an improvement in the separation performance. Finally, the joint modelling of the interaural phase and level differences and the integration of their non-Gaussian modelling within a variational Bayesian framework, is proposed. This approach combines the advantages of the robust estimation provided by the Student's t-distribution and the robust clustering inherent in the Bayesian approach. In other words, this general framework avoids the difficulties associated with MLE and makes use of the heavy tailed Student's t-distribution to improve the estimation of the soft probabilistic masks at various reverberation times particularly for sources in close proximity. Through an extensive set of simulation studies which compares the proposed approach with other T-F masking algorithms under different scenarios, a significant improvement in terms of objective and subjective performance measures is achieved.

▼ Previous analyses have made insightful progress on how Lushootseed functions primarily based upon elicitation work and morphosyntactic observations. Much of this work is based upon a structural linguistic
analysis. For years, this form of
analysis has been the primary way Lushootseed has been presented and these insights have been helpful in understanding how Lushootseed functions. Indeed, much of what has been said about Lushootseed on this level is the basis for my
analysis in this dissertation.
However, there are elements of Lushootseed that do not fit well within this more traditional frame work and are not fully understood through just a structural linguistic
analysis. This includes morphological elements, such as: the functions of the s- ‘nominalizer’; ʔu-, previously analyzed as a perfective marker; and =əxʷ, previously analyzed as marking a change of state. In addition, previous
analysis on the diachronic Salish passive construction does not hold as a synchronic passive among four Central Salish languages. The methodology in this dissertation examines natural
speech patterns and leans towards analyzing morphosyntactic elements in terms of focus and discourse marking. When certain Lushootseed constructions are analyzed using this approach, their distributions have promising results.

▼ Dysphonia affects one’s ability to produce voice.
Because voice is the most fundamental component of
speech, it is
not surprising that many speakers with dysphonia report decreased
intelligibility in everyday communication environments. Despite
this report, intelligibility is not routinely measured in clinical
assessment of dysphonia. Because the intelligibility deficit is
most noticeable in noisy environments, measuring the deficit
requires thorough understanding of the interaction between
dysphonia, background noise and intelligibility. Understanding this
interaction would also help development of treatment approaches for
maximizing intelligibility for chronically dysphonic patients. The
objective of this project was to establish experimental models for
investigating this interaction. In particular, potential of
perceptual and acoustic approaches were examined. The overarching
goal of this research is to develop a clinical tool for assessment
of intelligibility in dysphonic
speech and treatment approaches for
improving the intelligibility deficit. Two
speech perception
experiments were conducted to determine the effect of background
noise on intelligibility. The first study measured intelligibility
with a transcription-based method in quiet and noise. The second
study measured intelligibility with a rating-based method in three
levels of noise. Correlation between these measurements was
examined to evaluate their agreement. The results indicated that
these measurements strongly correlate; however, their relationship
with ratings of voice quality significantly differed. These
findings indicate that both of these measures could be used to
evaluate intelligibility of dysphonic
speech; however, they are not
equivalent measures. The acoustic studies were conducted for two
purposes: 1) to examine utility of an existing clinical acoustic
measure, cepstral peak prominence (CPP), for prediction of
intelligibility deficit in dysphonic
speech, and 2) to explore
potential of a preclinical tool, the landmark-based
speech analysis
algorithm, for characterizing linguistic aspects of dysphonic
speech. The results of the CPP study indicated that the measure
only moderately predicts intelligibility, thus it cannot be used
alone as an acoustic marker for intelligibility. Two studies were
conducted with a landmark-based
speech analysis program. The first
study used the
analysis to characterize normal adult
speech with
standard clinical
speech material. Results of this study
demonstrated the expression pattern of landmarks, acoustic markers
of articulatory events, could be used as a blueprint for
investigating disordered
speech acoustics. The second study
evaluated whether this
analysis is capable of describing a
difference between dysphonic and normal
speech. Results of these
studies suggested that landmark-based
analysis an effective method
for detecting dysphonic
speech.

▼ Medical fields requires fast, simple and noninvasive methods of diagnostic
techniques. Several methods are available and possible because of the growth of
technology that provides the necessary means of collecting and processing signals.
The present thesis details the work done in the field of voice signals. New methods
of analysis have been developed to understand the complexity of voice signals,
such as nonlinear dynamics aiming at the exploration of voice signals dynamic
nature. The purpose of this thesis is to characterize complexities of pathological
voice from healthy signals and to differentiate stuttering signals from healthy
signals. Efficiency of various acoustic as well as non linear time series methods
are analysed. Three groups of samples are used, one from healthy individuals,
subjects with vocal pathologies and stuttering subjects. Individual vowels/ and a continuous speech data for the utterance of the sentence "iruvarum changatimaranu" the meaning in English is "Both are good
friends" from Malayalam language are recorded using a microphone . The
recorded audio are converted to digital signals and are subjected to analysis.Acoustic perturbation methods like fundamental frequency (FO), jitter, shimmer,
Zero Crossing Rate(ZCR) were carried out and non linear measures like maximum lyapunov exponent(Lamda max), correlation dimension (D2), Kolmogorov exponent(K2),
and a new measure of entropy viz., Permutation entropy (PE) are evaluated for all
three groups of the subjects. Permutation Entropy is a nonlinear complexity
measure which can efficiently distinguish regular and complex nature of any
signal and extract information about the change in dynamics of the process by
indicating sudden change in its value.
The results shows that nonlinear dynamical methods seem to be a suitable
technique for voice signal analysis, due to the chaotic component of the human
voice. Permutation entropy is well suited due to its sensitivity to uncertainties,
since the pathologies are characterized by an increase in the signal complexity and
unpredictability. Pathological groups have higher entropy values compared to the
normal group. The stuttering signals have lower entropy values compared to the
normal signals.PE is effective in charaterising the level of improvement after two weeks of
speech therapy in the case of stuttering subjects. PE is also effective in
characterizing the dynamical difference between healthy and pathological
subjects. This suggests that PE can improve and complement the recent voice
analysis methods available for clinicians.
The work establishes the application of the simple, inexpensive and fast algorithm
of PE for diagnosis in vocal disorders and stuttering subjects.

▼ Speech processing refers to a set of tasks that involve
speech analysis and synthesis. Most
speech processing algorithms model a subset of
speech parameters of interest and blur the rest using signal processing techniques and feature extraction. However, evidence shows that many
speech parameters can be more accurately estimated if they are modeled jointly;
speech synthesis also benefits from joint modeling.
This thesis proposes a probabilistic generative model for
speech called the Probabilistic Acoustic Tube (PAT). The highlights of the model are threefold. First, it is among the very first works to build a complete probabilistic model for
speech. Second, it has a well-designed model for the phase spectrum of
speech, which has been hard to model and often neglected. Third, it models the AM-FM effects in
speech, which are perceptually significant but often ignored in frame-based
speech processing algorithms. Experiment shows that the proposed model has good potential for a number of
speech processing tasks.

▼ Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Statistics show that nearly 90% of people impaired with PD develop voice and speech disorders. Speech production impairments in PD subjects typically result in hypophonia and consequently, poor speech signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in noisy environments and inferior speech intelligibility and quality. Assessment, monitoring, and improvement of the perceived quality and intelligibility of Parkinsonian voice and speech are, therefore, paramount. In the first study of this thesis, the perceived quality of sustained vowels produced by PD patients was assessed through objective predictors. Subjective quality ratings of sustained vowels were collected from 51 PD patients, on and off the Levodopa medication, and 7 control subjects. Features extracted from the sustained vowel recordings were combined using linear regression (LR) and support vector regression (SVR). An objective metric that combined linear prediction and harmonicity features resulted in a high correlation of 0.81 with subjective ratings, higher than the performance reported in the literature. The second study focused on the prediction of amplified Parkinsonian speech quality. Speech amplifiers are used by PD patients to counteract hyperphonia. To benchmark the amplifier performance, subjective ratings of the quality of speech samples from 11 PD patients and 10 control subjects using 7 different speech amplifiers in different background noise conditions were collected. Objective quality predictors were then developed in combination with machine learning algorithms such as deep learning (DL). It was shown that the speech amplifiers differentially affect Parkinsonian speech quality and that the composite objective metric resulted in a correlation of 0.85 with subjective speech quality ratings. In the third study, a new signal-to-noise feedback (SNF) device was designed and developed to help PD patients control their speech SNR, intelligibility, and quality. The proposed SNF device contained dual ear-level microphones for estimating the speech SNR, a throat accelerometer for reliable voice activity detection, and visual/auditory alarms when the produced speech was below a certain threshold. Performance evaluation of this device in noisy environments demonstrated significant improvements in speech SNR, perceived intelligibility, and predicted quality, especially in high background noise levels.

▼ Ph.D. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2014.
This study investigates a talk show host's questioning, active listening and coparticipating practices in story elciting and narrating phases in a Korean television talk show, particularly focusing on the use of reported speech and bodily actions. The host's use of reported speech was quite noteworthy because the utterances realized in a form of reported speech are not exclusively "reports" of past events. Viewing reported speech as a creative linguistic resource, instances of reported speech that were not only uttered, but also left unsaid are examined. Unexpressed instances of reported speech include self-quotations, conjectures, inferences and hypothetical utterances.
This study's data consists of 1,045 minutes of Korean TV talk show. The selected guest speakers are prominent individuals from varying fields. This research is primarily concerned with (1) how the host brings the guest speakers' past experience into the present moment and heightens the narratives' tellability; (2) how the host achieves his institutional role; and (3) how the host displays his involvement in the storytelling and collaboratively co-constructs the story-in-progress with the guest speaker.
This study suggests that in questioning sequence, the host uses reported speech to display a less knowledgeable epistemic status; to communicate the tellability of a guest's non-normative speech event; and to prompt the guest's version of story. In listening sequence, the host's use of quoted formulation conveys his immediate understanding, committed affiliation; summarizes the guest's previous turns; resolves misunderstanding caused by trouble sources; and allows the host to take back the conversational floor and close down the ongoing topic. This study also shows that the host signals his affiliation through the employment of reported speech and embodied action. The host recycles the story climax; jointly accomplishes storytelling by co-completing or assumingly enacting what the guest's story character must have thought, felt or said at the time of the narrated story; and builds common ground by sharing his personal experience.
Through the analyses, this study demonstrates the multi-functional aspects of Korean reported speech. It also provides implications for the view of reported speech as a social action and conversational practice.

▼ Accent conversion intends to change the accent of a speaker to a desired accent and preserve the speaker’s voice identity. This technology can offer a number of useful applications. For example, integrating accent conversion to a text-to-speech system (TTS) can produce a voice with a desired accent instantly and inexpensively. Applying the technology to the film industry can change an actor’s or actress’s accent to a desired accent without hard training for the actor or actress to learn a new accent; this can be achieved by modifying the accent of the film recordings. As a foreign language learning tool, it could allow the learners to listen to their own voice with the native speaker’s accent and to mimic that accent. Hence, enhance learning experience and improve learning progress. In this dissertation, a new approach in both accent analysis and conversion has been proposed. In contrast to previous approaches in accent-related research, such as in regional or foreign accent classification and identification, where the databases are formed from large groups of single-accent speakers, this study uses data from an individual who can speak in two accents. This removes the effects of inter-speaker variability and facilitates efficient identification and analysis of acoustic features of different accents. Two British regional accents which display distinct differences to the human listener were used in this study as two typical British regional accents. Vowel based acoustic analysis was carried out to investigate the acoustic characteristics of the two accents and identify the prominent features that are most influential on the variability of accents. Acoustic characteristics such as formant frequencies, fundamental frequency and its variation slope, intensity of speech, and duration of phone were used for accent acoustic analysis. In this dissertation, accent conversion via formants modification and pitch contour manipulation was investigated. Three different formant-based spectral mappingalgorithms, mean-variance linear conversion, Nth order non-linear conversion and piece-wise linear transformation based on Gaussian mixture model conversion were investigated. Furthermore, the project has implemented accent conversion on a general speech analysis and synthesis system; the output speech synthesized by the three mapping algorithms was assessed by objective and subjective evaluation. The effects of spectral conversion and pitch contour conversion on accent conversion were also evaluated. The results of the study showed that accent conversion can be achieved to some degree via formants modification and pitch contour manipulation.

▼ Speech is a non-stationary signal and contains modulations in both spectral and temporal domains. Based on the type of modulations studied, most
speech processing algorithms can be classified into short-time
analysis algorithms, narrow-band
analysis algorithms, or joint spectro-temporal
analysis algorithms. While traditional methods of
speech analysis study the modulation along either time (Short-time
analysis algorithms) or frequency (Narrowband
analysis) at a time. A new class of algorithms that work simultaneously along both temporal as well as spectral dimensions, called the spectro-temporal
analysis algorithms, have become prominent over the past decade.
Joint spectro-temporal
analysis (also referred to as 2-D
speech analysis) has shown promise in applications such as formant estimation, pitch estimation,
speech recognition, etc.
Over the past decade, 2-D
speech analysis has been independently motivated from several directions. Broadly these motivations for 2-D
speech models can be grouped into
speech-production motivated, source-separation/machine- learning motivated and neurophysiology motivated.
In this thesis, we develop 2-D
speech model based on the
speech production motivation. The overall organization of the thesis is as follows: We first develop the context of 2-D
speech processing in Chapter one, we then proceed to develop a 2-D multicomponent AM-FM model for narrowband spectrogram patch of voiced
speech and experiment with the perceptual significance of number of components needed to represent a spectrogram patch in Chapter two. In Chapter three we develop a demodulation algorithm called the inphase and the quadrature phase demodulation (IQ), compared to the state-of-the art sinusoidal demodulation, the AM obtained using this method is more robust to carrier estimation errors. The demodulation algorithm was verified on call voiced sentences taken from the TIMIT database. In chapter four we develop a demodulation algorithm based on Riesz transform, a natural extension of the Hilbert transform to higher dimensions, unlike the sinusoidal and the IQ demodulation techniques, Riesz-transform-based demodulation does not require explicit carrier estimation and is also robust to pitch discontinuous in patches. The algorithm was validated on all voiced sentences from the TIMIT database. Both IQ and Riesz-transform-based methods were found to give more accurate estimates of the 2-D AM (relates to vocal tract) and 2-D carrier (relates to source) compared with the sinusoidal modulation. In Chapter five we show application of the demodulated AM and carrier to pitch estimation and for creation of hybrid sounds. The hybrid sounds created were found to have better perceptual quality compared with their counterparts created using the linear prediction
analysis. In Chapter six we summarize the work and present with possible directions of future research.

▼ Addressing three problems in the field of leadership
studies - fragmentation across disciplines; emphasis on individual
leaders in titled positions; failure to identify a coherent set of
actions for performing leadership - this study develops a framework
of core communicative leadership practices. It is premised on a
philosophical
analysis of leadership as a social strategy for
securing action in service of interests claimed by or for a
community - an action performed intentionally via symbolic behavior
accessible to any and all members of a community. This definition
serves as a heuristic for the development of a systematic theory of
leadership practice. The primary guiding question is: How do we
participate in leadership? Eight core practices that are
fundamental to initiating and participating in leadership are
identified and analyzed. The core practices include: reporting and
inquiring - to build dialogue and facilitation; directing and
pledging - to build commitment and obligation; envisioning and
advocating - to inspire and motivate; and declaring and
constituting - to create or change social reality. Practices are
derived from four functional categories abstracted from the
leadership literature, analyzed pragmatically using
speech act
theory, integrated with multi-disciplinary research, including
communication, rhetoric, social psychology, and philosophy, and
illustrated through practice-based scenarios. Ultimately, a
thoroughly analyzed theory of leadership practice - grounded
solidly in the field and integrated with scholarship from other
disciplines - is provided with a set of implications and
suggestions for the practice, development, and empirical study of
leadership.

Multimodal analysis of verbal and nonverbal behaviour on the example of clinical depression

▼ Clinical depression is a common mood disorder that may last for long periods, vary
in severity, and could impair an individual’s ability to cope with daily life. Depression
affects 350 million people worldwide and is therefore considered a burden not
only on a personal and social level, but also on an economic one. Depression is the
fourth most significant cause of suffering and disability worldwide and it is predicted
to be the leading cause in 2020.
Although treatment of depression disorders has proven to be effective in most
cases, misdiagnosing depressed patients is a common barrier. Not only because
depression manifests itself in different ways, but also because clinical interviews and
self-reported history are currently the only ways of diagnosis, which risks a range
of subjective biases either from the patient report or the clinical judgment. While
automatic affective state recognition has become an active research area in the past
decade, methods for mood disorder detection, such as depression, are still in their
infancy. Using the advancements of affective sensing techniques, the long-term goal
is to develop an objective multimodal system that supports clinicians during the
diagnosis and monitoring of clinical depression.
This dissertation aims to investigate the most promising characteristics of depression
that can be “heard” and “seen” by a computer system for the task of detecting
depression objectively. Using audio-video recordings of a clinically validated
Australian depression dataset, several experiments are conducted to characterise
depression-related patterns from verbal and nonverbal cues. Of particular interest in
this dissertation is the exploration of speech style, speech prosody, eye activity, and
head pose modalities. Statistical analysis and automatic classification of extracted
cues are investigated. In addition, multimodal fusion methods of these modalities
are examined to increase the accuracy and confidence level of detecting depression.
These investigations result in a proposed system that detects depression in a binary
manner (e.g. depressed vs. non-depressed) using temporal depression behavioural
cues.
The proposed system: (1) uses audio-video recordings to investigate verbal and
nonverbal modalities, (2) extracts functional features from verbal and nonverbal
modalities over the entire subjects’ segments, (3) pre- and post-normalises the extracted
features, (4) selects features using the T-test, (5) classifies depression in a
binary manner (i.e. severely depressed vs. healthy controls), and finally (6) fuses the
individual modalities.
The proposed system was validated for scalability and usability using generalisation
experiments. Close studies were made of American and German depression
datasets individually, and then also in combination with the Australian one. Applying
the proposed system to the three datasets showed remarkably high classification results - up to a 95% average recall for the individual sets and 86% for the three
combined. Strong…

▼ The goal of this study was to investigate the methodology
in designing a vowel intelligibility model that can objectively
predict the outcome of a vowel confusion test performed with normal
hearing individuals listening to a cochlear implant acoustic model.
The model attempts to mimic vowel perception of a cochlear
implantee mathematically. The output of the model is the calculated
probability of correct identification of vowel tokens and the
probability of specific vowel confusions in a subjective vowel
confusion test. In such a manner, the model can be used to aid
cochlear implant research by complementing subjective listening
tests. The model may also be used to test hypotheses concerning the
use and relationship of acoustic cues in vowel identification. The
objective vowel intelligibility model consists of two parts: the
speech processing component (used to extract the acoustic cues
which allow vowels to be identified) and the decision component
(simulation of the decision making that takes place in the brain).
Acoustic cues were extracted from the vowel sounds and used to
calculate probabilities of identifying or confusing specific
vowels. The confusion matrices produces by the objective vowel
perception model were compared with results from subjective tests
performed with normal hearing listeners listening to an acoustic
cochlear implant model. The most frequent confusions could be
predicted using the first two formant frequencies and the vowel
duration as acoustic cues. The model could predict the
deterioration of vowel recognition when noise was added to the
speech being evaluated. The model provided a first approximation of
vowel intelligibility and requires further4 development to
completely predict
speech perception of cochlear
implantees.

▼ The goal of this study was to investigate the
methodology in designing a vowel intelligibility model that can
objectively predict the outcome of a vowel confusion test performed
with normal hearing individuals listening to a cochlear implant
acoustic model. The model attempts to mimic vowel perception of a
cochlear implantee mathematically. The output of the model is the
calculated probability of correct identification of vowel tokens
and the probability of specific vowel confusions in a subjective
vowel confusion test. In such a manner, the model can be used to
aid cochlear implant research by complementing subjective listening
The model provided a first approximation of
vowel intelligibility and requires further4 development to
completely predict
speech perception of cochlear
implantees.

▼ The increased prevalence rate of autism has immense implications for
speech language pathologists (SLPs) who are directly involved in the education and service delivery for students with autism. However, few studies have documented the effectiveness of the knowledge and confidence of SLPs regarding autism. The purpose of this study was to measure the knowledge and confidence of SLPs regarding autism and the extent to which their educational and professional training prepared them to work effectively with this population. An online survey was administered to and returned by 336 SLPs nation-wide. Two multiple linear regressions were conducted to determine the variables that explained overall knowledge and confidence. The number of students with autism on one's caseload explained most of the variance. Independent sample t-test results depicted knowledge and confidence scores of SLPs who were behaviorally trained versus those who were not behaviorally trained. SLPs who were behaviorally trained had higher mean scores on measures of knowledge and confidence when compared to those without formal behavioral training. Finally, a bivariate correlation was conducted to explore the relationship between knowledge and confidence of SLPs, however, results were not statistically significant.

▼ Speech intelligibility measures how much a speaker can
be understood by a listener. Traditional measures of
intelligibility, such as word accuracy, are not sufficient to
reveal the reasons of intelligibility degradation. This
dissertation investigates the underlying sources of intelligibility
degradations from both perspectives of the speaker and the
listener. Segmental phoneme errors and suprasegmental lexical
boundary errors are developed to reveal the perceptual strategies
of the listener. A comprehensive set of automated acoustic measures
are developed to quantify variations in the acoustic signal from
three perceptual aspects, including articulation, prosody, and
vocal quality. The developed measures have been validated on a
dysarthric speech dataset with various severity degrees. Multiple
regression analysis is employed to show the developed measures
could predict perceptual ratings reliably. The relationship between
the acoustic measures and the listening errors is investigated to
show the interaction between speech production and perception. The
hypothesize is that the segmental phoneme errors are mainly caused
by the imprecise articulation, while the sprasegmental lexical
boundary errors are due to the unreliable phonemic information as
well as the abnormal rhythm and prosody patterns. To test the
hypothesis, within-speaker variations are simulated in different
speaking modes. Significant changes have been detected in both the
acoustic signals and the listening errors. Results of the
regression analysis support the hypothesis by showing that changes
in the articulation-related acoustic features are important in
predicting changes in listening phoneme errors, while changes in
both of the articulation- and prosody-related features are
important in predicting changes in lexical boundary errors.
Moreover, significant correlation has been achieved in the
cross-validation experiment, which indicates that it is possible to
predict intelligibility variations from acoustic
signal.

▼ Children with hearing loss may demonstrate
speech and language delays as a result of reduced auditory access. Though this population historically has exhibited delayed or deviant
speech and language, there have been decreases in the average age of identification as a result of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and advancements in cochlear implants and hearing aids over the last 20 years to improve these outcomes. Three studies are presented addressing different areas of
speech and language development where progress has been noted as compared to historical outcomes. Phoneme development is described for children with hearing loss ages 4 years to 7 years and compared to normal hearing typically developing peers. Specific demographic factors impacting phoneme development are considered and evaluated using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). The school and home language environment is described using LENA (Language Environment
Analysis). Additionally, LENA is used to assess the impact of parent education. Implications for clinical practice are discussed as they pertain to developing
speech and language in young children with hearing loss.

This paper examines the meanings assigned by teachers in a public school in São Paulo about school inclusion. Everything these teachers had said was analyzed under the aegis of French Trend of Discourse Analysis. Discussed in this paper, the entanglement between speech therapist and education, laws and concepts of inclusion. An overview of the theory of discourse analysis was drawn to make possible the analysis of data leaving these theoretical bases. Data were collected by recording discussions of two discussion groups with teachers about school inclusion. The videos were transcribed and analyzed using as methodology the French Line of Discourse Analysis. Thus, it enables to understand speech in addition to what is said, and to reveal ideological marks of the teacher s discourses about school inclusion. We consider the meanings of school inclusion, assigned by teachers, is set up initially by promoting socialization, by intertwining between speeches, and analyst intervention and analysis of the unsaid. We noticed that the speeches attribute also the sense of providing teaching / learning to the subject with disabilities. We concluded that it needs a (re)signification of the discourse about inclusion, other ideological brands. And for that, it is necessary the school be embraced from the perspective of a collaborative work

▼ The objective of this study is to investigate automatic recognition of speech-evoked
auditory brainstem responses (speech-evoked ABR) to the five English vowels (/a/, /ae/, /ao (ɔ)/, /i/ and /u/). We used different automatic speech recognition methods to
discriminate between the responses to the vowels. The best recognition result was
obtained by applying principal component analysis (PCA) on the amplitudes of the first ten harmonic components of the envelope following response (based on spectral components at fundamental frequency and its harmonics) and of the frequency following response (based on spectral components in first formant region) and combining these two feature sets. With this combined feature set used as input to an artificial neural network, a recognition accuracy of 83.8% was achieved. This study could be extended to more complex stimuli to improve assessment of the auditory system for speech communication in hearing impaired individuals, and potentially help in the objective fitting of hearing aids.

▼ In interpreting the "Discourse about faith" (Heb. 11, 1-40) the combined rhetoric and text analytic approach was chosen, as more appropriate for the interpretation of the Epistle, because of the gravity it gives to the form of rhetoric speech that the text has, to the function of language, to the internal connection and relevance of the whole text, and to the historical-social context including the relationship of the author of the Epistle to its recipients. The "Discourse about Faith" (Heb. 11, 1-40) has a content intrinsically connected to its neighbouring verses that are of mixed exhorting and didactic character. This allows their integration together with the "Discourse about faith" in a broader soteriological demonstrative discourse, which we call "Discourse about the Power of Faith" (Heb. 10, 19-23; 32-39; 11, 1-40; 12, 1-3; 18-24). After the functional inclusion of the "Discourse about faith" (Heb. 11, 1-40) within the broader content of the Epistle and its historical context, the broader demonstrative "Discourse about the Power of Faith" is examined from the viewpoint of text criticism, as well as of syntactic, grammatical, lexical and rhetoric analysis. The rhetoric analysis includes the recording of the rhetoric units of the demonstrative discourse, of the rhetoric forms, and of the rhetoric topics, mainly of the material topics; it also records the semi-poetic rhythm of the text, on the basis of tonal steps followed in it, in order to clarify the style, with which the authors emphasize their ideas. The text analysis consists of an examination of the logical connection between the pieces of the broader demonstrative discourse on the basis of their relevance in sense, so that their meaning is specified on the basis of their existing semantic cooperation. It also requires consideration of logical connection and cooperation between the neighbouring pieces, not only on the basis of existing relevance of meaning, but additionally on the basis of the documented connection of meaning at the ends of one rhetoric unit (usually a passage or a subparagraph) with the meaning at the centre of an adjacent unit, previous or next, and vice versa. Additionally a recourse outside the boundaries of the broader demonstrative discourse is utilized, but within the limits of the Epistle and referring to its general theological assumptions. The commentary and the annotation of the Epistle by prominent Fathers of the Church and by contemporary commentators have been also taken into account in the interpretation, and adjustments have been made, where deemed necessary. Following this interpretation, answers are given to seven questions raised in the Introduction. These questions are related to the exploration of the concept of faith and of the mode of its presence, on the basis on the teaching of the Epistle.

▼ Emotion adds an important element to the discussion of how information is conveyed and processed by humans; indeed, it plays an important role in the contextual understanding of messages. This research is centered on investigating relevant features for affect classification, along with modeling the multimodal and multitemporal nature of emotion.
The use of formant-based features for affect classification is explored. Since linear predictive coding (LPC) based formant estimators often encounter problems with modeling
speech elements, such as nasalized phonemes and give inconsistent results for bandwidth estimation, a robust formant-tracking algorithm was introduced to better model the formant and spectral properties of
speech. The algorithm utilizes Gaussian mixtures to estimate spectral parameters and refines the estimates using maximum a posteriori (MAP) adaptation. When the method was used for features extraction applied to emotion classification, the results indicate that an improved formant-tracking method will also provide improved emotion classification accuracy.
Spectral features contain rich information about expressivity and emotion. However, most of the recent work in affective computing has not progressed beyond analyzing the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC’s) and their derivatives. A novel method for characterizing spectral peaks was introduced. The method uses a multi-resolution sinusoidal transform coding (MRSTC). Because of MRSTC’s high precision in representing spectral features, including preservation of high frequency content not present in the MFCC’s, additional resolving power was demonstrated.
Facial expressions were analyzed using 53 motion capture (MoCap) markers. Statistical and regression measures of these markers were used for emotion classification along the voice features. Since different modalities use different sampling frequencies and
analysis window lengths, a novel classifier fusion algorithm was introduced. This algorithm is intended to integrate classifiers trained at various
analysis lengths, as well as those obtained from other modalities. Classification accuracy was statistically significantly improved using a multimodal-multitemporal approach with the introduced classifier fusion method.
A practical application of the techniques for emotion classification was explored using social dyadic plays between a child and an adult. The Multimodal Dyadic Behavior (MMDB) dataset was used to automatically predict young children’s levels of engagement using linguistic and non-linguistic vocal cues along with visual cues, such as direction of a child’s gaze or a child’s gestures.
Although this and similar research is limited by inconsistent subjective boundaries, and differing theoretical definitions of emotion, a significant step toward successful emotion classification has been demonstrated; key to the progress has been via novel voice and visual features and a newly developed multimodal-multitemporal approach.

▼ The aim of this thesis is to define a perceptual scale for the ‘Time-Frequency’
analysis of music signals. The equal tempered ‘Bach ’ scale is a suitable scale, since it covers most of the genres of music and the error is equally distributed for each semi-tone. However, it may be necessary to allow a tolerance of around 50 cents or half the interval of the Bach scale, so that the interval can accommodate other common intonation schemes. The thesis covers the formulation of the Bach scale filter-bank as a time-varying model. It makes a comparative study with other commonly used perceptual scales. Two applications for the Bach scale filter-bank are also proposed, namely automated segmentation of
speech signals and transcription of singing voice for query-by-humming applications.
Even though this filter-bank is suggested with a motivation from music, it could also be applied to
speech. A method for automatically segmenting continuous
speech into phonetic units is proposed. The results, obtained from the proposed method, show around 82% accuracy for the English and 85% accuracy for the Hindi databases. This is an improvement of around 2 -3% when the performance is compared with other popular methods in the literature. Interestingly, the Bach scale filters perform better than the filters designed for other common perceptual scales, such as Mel and Bark scales.
‘Musical transcription’ refers to the process of converting a musical rendering or performance into a set of symbols or notations. A query in a ‘query-by-humming system’ can be made in several ways, some of which are singing with words, or with arbitrary syllables, or whistling. Two algorithms are suggested to annotate a query. The algorithms are designed to be fairly robust for these various forms of queries. The first algorithm is a frequency selection based method. It works on the basis of selecting the most likely frequency components at any given time instant. The second algorithm works on the basis of finding time-connected contours of high energy in the ‘Time-Frequency’ plane of the input signal. The time domain algorithm works better in terms of instantaneous pitch estimates. It results in an error of around 10 -15%, while the frequency domain method results in an error of around 12 -20%.
A song rendered by two different people will have quite a few different properties. Their absolute pitches, rates of rendering, timbres based on voice quality and inaccuracies, may be different. The thesis discusses a method to quantify the distance between two different renderings of musical pieces. The distance function has been evaluated by attempting a search for a particular song from a database of a size of 315, made up of songs sung by both male and female singers and whistled queries. Around 90 % of the time, the correct song is found among the top five best choices picked.
Thus, the Bach scale has been proposed as a suitable scale for representing the perception of music. It has been explored in two applications, namely automated segmentation of
speech and transcription…

This research aims to Speech Analyze of love and identify what are the representations that the student has of love and the other in virtual relationships. To achieve the goal, were looked up the dissertations written by middle school students. From the theoretical point of view, based on the Speech Analyze by French perspective, focusing on notions of subject and of speech, categorized by the concepts of discursive memory and constitutive heterogeneity. The results of this research revealed two discursive formations: a group whose representation is the love and the order of memory, giving a heterogeneous speech constituted of love as is cultivated by the family, of love as seen by the church, the love as studied in literature classes, and such as, the order of desire, another group which the representation it is a uncommitted love, with quick disposal and, as such, the post-modern order of the liquid love.
The purpose of this thesis is to study definitions in the oral contexts and to establish the viability and convenience of an approach that considers systems of definitions at work (systemic structures), instead of definitions as isolated phenomena in discourse. After discuss some implications of several approaches for definitions theory, we present a definitions typology, which fits with that particular context. Once we have presented a scheme that distinguishes between definition operations in empirical level and definition operations in mental level, we develop the concepts of stricto sensu definition structure [ëstrutura (pró-)definidora\"] and lato sensu definition structure [\"contextura (pró-)definidora\"]. Finally, we examine a kind of definition, which responds at the same time to pragmatic aspects of verbal interactions and to the ontological flexibility of certain definition objects.

The purpose of this study was identifying in the film discourse what the films says about this event and the contemporary ways to face it. The method of the research consists in analyze the films; The Sea Inside (Alejandro Amenabar), The Son´s Room (Nanni Moretti), The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman) in two aspects: analysis of the film elements like cinematography, lighting, camera, costumes designer, scenery, makeup, script, editing, characters; and the film analysis like a narrative, identifying the fable, the themes and the discourses. This analyses show an intimate narrative of death which was portrayed like a unique experience. According to the thanatological literature, death as subjective experience is one of the current ways of facing death in Western societies. The phenomenon of death in an intimate perspective also appears in the film discourse of some cinematographic works, confirming a historical-cultural mentality of humanity
