▼ Digital images are used almost exclusively instead of film to capture visual information across many scientific fields. The colorimetric color representation within these digital images can be relayed from the digital counts produced by the camera with the use of a known color target. In image capture of magnified images, there is currently no reliable color target that can be used at multiple magnifications and give the user a solid understanding of the color ground truth within those images. The first part of this dissertation included the design, fabrication, and testing of a color target produced with optical
interference coated microlenses for use in an off-axis illumination, compound microscope. An ideal target was designed to increase the color gamut for colorimetric imaging and provide the necessary "Block Dye"
spectral reflectance profiles across the visible spectrum to reduce the number of color patches necessary for multiple filter imaging systems that rely on statistical models for
spectral reflectance reconstruction.
There are other scientific disciplines that can benefit from a specialized color target to determine the color ground truth in their magnified images and perform
spectral estimation. Not every discipline has the luxury of having a multi-filter imaging system. The second part of this dissertation developed two unique ways of using an
interference coated color mirror target: one that relies on multiple light-source angles, and one that leverages a dynamic color change with time. The source multi-angle technique would be used for the microelectronic discipline where the reconstructed
spectral reflectance would be used to determine a dielectric film thickness on a silicon substrate, and the time varying technique would be used for a biomedical example to determine the thickness of human tear film.

▼ Instrumentation in a nuclear power plant is critical in monitoring the stability and safety levels of a reactor. Temperature is a key measurement performed on the core of a reactor to control the power output and sustain a safe thermal margin. If there is a dramatic change in temperature, failure is likely to follow if action is not taken to cool the system. Traditionally, to measure the temperature of a reactor, several resistance temperature detectors are placed in predefined locations on the system. Resistance temperature detectors (RTD) are typically platinum coiled wire wrapped around a ceramic cylinder and encased in a metal sheath. Due to the harsh environment of nuclear reactors, the RTDs degrade and their resistance measurements drift over time. This drift in resistance can be misunderstood as a drift in reactor temperature. In the past, the RTDs would be serviced every few years either through calibration or replacement. To service the RTDs the reactor is shut down and a person is sent into a dangerous environment. Utilizing Johnson Noise Thermometry (JNT) will reduce the occurrences of service needed for RTDs and provide a high- accuracy temperature measurement. JNT is a first order fundamental expression of temperature invulnerable to drift in the RTD’s physical condition. The signal processing behind JNT is presented in the following document. Spectral Estimation methods are utilized in order to remove electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the JNT measurement. These methods are unique to this dissertation. The EMI estimation method is modeled and simulation results are presented. The modeling of the EMI estimation involves locating EMI, analysis of EMI effects, and removal without bias. Finally, results from numerical and experimental verification are presented. The research presented here is important to furthering the future of the nuclear industry for several reasons. With this technology applied to existing systems reactor shut-down time can be decreased, technicians limit their exposure to dangerous radiation zones, and financial support for lengthy shut-downs is saved. The instrumentation community will benefit through the innovation of signal processing for very small signal versus noise interference.

Multicarrier systems are widely used today due to their robustness to multipath effects and efficient implementation using FFT. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system is a class of multicarrier modulation which consists of splitting up a wide-band signal at a high symbol rate into several lower rate signals, each one occupying a narrower band. ▼ Tinguely is a musical composition scored for strings, percussion and built instruments that focuses on the acoustic phenomena of interference and beats. Instrumental techniques have been developed to produce a sound world largely comprised of acoustic beating, pulsating multiphonics and noise. Instruments have been built or modified to create a timbral transition from strings to metal percussion, and multiple preparations are used on each instrument throughout the piece in order to interfere with its normal method of sound production. The interferences in Tinguely also occur on a metaphorical level, as established repeated musical patterns are disrupted by truncation, extension, silence and chaotic transformation.

▼ The performance of high-power broad-area diode
lasers is inhibited by beam filamentation induced by
free-carrier-based self-focusing. The resulting beam degradation
limits their usage in high-brightness, high-power applications such
as pumping fiber lasers, and laser cutting, welding, or marking.
Finite-difference propagation method simulations via RSoft’s
BeamPROP commercial simulation suite and a custom-built MATLAB code
were used for the study and design of laser cavities that suppress
or avoid filamentation. BeamPROP was used to design a tapered,
passive, multi-mode interference cavity for the creation of a
self-phase-locking laser array, which is comprised of many
single-mode gain elements coupled to a wide output coupler to avoid
damage from local high optical intensities. MATLAB simulations were
used to study the effects of longitudinal and lateral cavity
confinement on lateral beam quality in conventional broad-area
lasers. This simulation was expanded to design a laser with lateral
gain and index prescription that is predicted to operate at or
above state-of-the-art powers while being efficiently coupled to
conventional telecom single-mode optical fibers. Experimentally, a
commercial broad-area laser was coupled in the far-field to a
single-mode fiber Bragg grating to provide grating-stabilized
single-mode laser feedback resulting in measured spectral narrowing
for efficient pump absorption. Additionally a 19 GHz-span,
spatially resolved, self-heterodyne measurement was made of a
broad-area laser to study the evolution/devolution of the mode
content of the emitted laser beam with increasing power
levels.

With the significant increase in these networks, the spectral coverage is increasingly dense. The high density of signals pointing to the saturation of the ISM spectrum, causing mutual interference of IEEE 802.11 networks. The aim of this study is to analyze the coverage of the spectrum, for WLANs, and evaluate the flow falls caused by spectral interferences, varying in space and time. Two scenarios were mapped to examine the degradations, with a low to medium and one with high density and complexity. The purpose of creating these scenarios was to compare the degradation caused by interference in different environments,…

▼ Efforts to reduce the size and costs of optical coherence tomography systems (OCT) for consumer
applications, in general, focus on Fourier-domain OCT, due to its potential to be integrated on an optical chip, implementing the interferometer and the spectrometer together as a compact system.
An alternative and near-term solution is multiple reference OCT. This technique utilizes a partial mirror in the reference arm to enhance the axial imaging depth of traditional time-domain OCT.
The motivation of this thesis is to investigate the performance and sensitivity characteristics of multiple reference OCT in comparison to time-domain OCT.
Due to the partial mirror, the light is recirculated multiple times and generates additional reference wavefronts reflected on the reference mirror with increasing path delays.
A fascinating consequence of this is the frequency-dependence of each reflection, which draws parallels with Fourier-domain OCT.
Hence, the
spectral properties of the
interference signals are studied in more detail.
This thesis guides the reader towards the
subject of OCT covering the fundamentals of OCT and the theoretical basis of multiple reference OCT.
The
spectral properties of the
interference signals of MR-OCT are further explained, and it is shown that the increasing path delay in the reference arm of the Michelson interferometer causes an increase of the frequency similar
to the increasing frequency vs. depth in the sample for Fourier-domain OCT.
The spacing between the partial mirror and the scanning mirror, in conjunction with the scanning range and
velocity, play a unique role in controlling a variety of parameters, which are not available in any other OCT system.
Signal simulations are provided for some theoretical aspects of interest and compared with signals measured on a sample mirror.
For each of the multiple
interference signals, the sensitivity was measured, and the results are compared to conventional time-domain OCT.
The higher orders of reflections show some non-linear characteristics that may reduce dynamic range and sensitivity.
Zemax was used to simulate the beam propagation in the optical system.
The impact of the reference mirror scanning parameters on the overall system characteristics was examined.
Further, a novel en-face scanning modality is described that can increase the data acquisition speed due to the reduction of the width of the scanned depth layers and demonstrates the flexibility of the scanning protocol of MR-OCT that would otherwise require extensive efforts with other OCT systems.
Some more specific aspects of the signal and image processing are discussed that have relevance for the image reconstruction of the multiple signal segments originating from the recirculated light due to the partial mirror in the reference arm.
So far the results in this thesis have shown that the multiple
interference frequencies originate from an actual change of the source spectrum due to the Doppler effect caused by the scanning mirror.

▼ Abstract
This thesis considers data transmission in a full-duplex (FD) multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, where a FD capable base station (BS) bidirectionally communicates with multiple half-duplex (HD) users in downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) channels using the same radio resources. The main challenge in FD communications is how to deal with the self-interference (SI) between transmit and receive antennas at the BS. The work carried out in the thesis is motivated by recent advanced techniques in hardware design demonstrating that the SI can be suppressed to a degree that possibly allows for FD transmission in cellular networks. In particular, this thesis attempts to explore the potential gains in terms of the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) that can be brought by the FD MU-MIMO model. As the first of its kinds, the thesis aims to present a solid mathematical framework and report interesting results that foster research on wireless communications in general and FD communications in particular.
For the FD system of interest the major challenge is due to the SI and co-channel interference from users in the UL channel to the ones in the DL channel, resulting in the coupling between the two channels. As a result we are concerned with the problem of joint transmit processing design to maximize the SE and EE subject to certain power constraints. Since the design problems are natually non-convex, it is difficult to find the globally optimal solutions or even when possible it is not practically appealing. Our contributions to solving these design problems are on the development of several iterative algorithms that can obtain locally optimal solutions. The proposed algorithms are built upon a framework of local optimization strategies such as the sequential parametric convex approximation and the Frank-Wolfe methods. In special cases closed-form designs are also presented.
The reported results show that when the SI is sufficiently suppressed the considered FD MU-MIMO system with the proposed SE designs achieves a significantly better SE but consumes more energy, compared to the HD counterpart. In terms of EE the proposed EE scheme is superior to the proposed SE design. Moreover, in the low transmit power region, the EE design achieves a worse EE than the HD system but a better one in the high trasmit power regime when the SI power is low.
Tiivistelmä
Tämä väitöskirja käsittelee datansiirtoa samanaikaisesti kaksisuuntaisessa (full-duplex, FD) usean käyttäjän moniantennijärjestelmässä (MU-MIMO), jossa FD-kykyinen tukiasema on yhtä aikaa yhteydessä vuorosuuntaisten (half-duplex, HD) käyttäjien kanssa laskevalla (DL) ja nousevalla (UL) siirtotiellä käyttäen samoja radioresursseja. FD-kommunikaation suurin haaste liittyy lähetys- ja vastaanottoantennien välisen omahäiriön (SI) hallintaan. Tässä työssä hyödynnetään tuoreita tutkimustuloksia, joissa edistyneillä häiriönvaimennustekniikoilla on kyetty vaimentamaan omahäiriö tasolle, jolla FD-lähetys solukkoverkoissa on toteutuskelpoista.…

▼ Single photons - discrete wavepackets of light - are one of the most fundamental entities in physics. In recent years, the ability to consistently create and manipulate both single photons and pairs of photons has facilitated everything from tests of quantum theory to the implementation of quantum-enhanced precision measurements. These activities all fall within the scope of the rapidly-growing field of quantum information - the exploitation of the properties of quantum states (and specifically their capability to exist in superpositions) to accomplish tasks that would not be possible with classical objects. One stated goal of research in quantum information is to build a device consisting of a network of quantum logic gates that can evaluate quantum algorithms. The photonic implementation of individual logic gates has already been demonstrated. However, partly due to standard methods of preparing single photons, current schemes have severe limitations in terms of scaling up from a single logic gate to multiple concatenated operations. Until now it has not been proven that single photons can be generated in pure and indistinguishable quantum states, something upon which the successful operation of optical quantum logic gates relies. This thesis presents an experimental demonstration of simultaneous generation of almost identical single photons in highly pure states from two independent sources based on parametric downconversion. This is a process of photon pair generation during the passage of a light beam through a nonlinear crystal; one photon from the resulting pair is detected to herald the other. The work herein describes, refines, and implements a technique that minimises the strong quantum correlations usually present within each pair by spectral engineering of the source. This allows the heralded single photons to be in pure states, a property that is confirmed by observing a high-visibility two-photon interference effect without spectral filtering.

▼ Electrical infrastructure of modern society is highly dependent on the power electronic systems for conditioning of electrical power from the raw power of the national grids. All modulation schemes create trains of switched pulses, which also contain unwanted harmonic components that need to be minimized. Resulting electromagnetic
interference may disturb operations of sensitive instruments, necessitating the use of filters. Random pulse width modulation (RPWM) creates continuity in the output voltage of power spectrum thereby, reducing the discreteness. The current study focuses on the experimental and theoretical aspects of RPWM method by creating a new technology which leaves the power control method unaffected, transfer the harmonic power in frequency spectra of voltage and current to power
spectral density while creating dips in noise spectra. The objective of this method is to improve conditions for long and medium wave conditions. The method presented in this thesis effectively suppresses specified components in the spectra of voltage noise of dc-dc power electronic converters. Computer simulations and laboratory experiments confirm the validity of the proposed theory of
spectral nulls in the dc-input power electronic converters.

Sigfox rises as a promising candidate dedicated for long-distance and low-power transmissions in the IoT backgrounds. Ultra Narrow Band (UNB), being the…

▼ With the advent of broadband over power line (BPL) for high-speed data transmission and the emerging interest in grid modernization, the appeal of signal transmission on a power line above the earth is significant. One important issue is the nature of the fields in the vicinity of the power line, since regulatory agencies (such as the FCC) place restrictions on the field level. Models used in previous studies have yet to include the influences of the feed lines that carry the radiofrequency currents from the electronics to the power lines. In the present work reported in this dissertation, the field surrounding the feeding structure and power lines over an earth is examined. Different feeding methods and earth models are used in the investigation, ranging from very simple to more sophisticated. In the simplest approach, the earth is modeled as a perfect conductor, and image theory is used. A more sophisticated approach uses the
spectral domain immittance method to account for the finite conductivity of the earth. Results allow for the identification of the mechanisms involved with the field emission as well as a determination of the maximum power level of a BPL source that will meet existing FCC guidelines.

▼ The capability to resolve the contributions from spectroscopically overlapping fluorophores has enabled significant breakthroughs in cellular imaging. However, commercial microscopes for this purpose use analog light detection with least squares curve-fitting analysis and improvements in sensitivity are needed. To this end, a microscope has been constructed with high throughput and single-photon detection capability. The fluorescence is separated through use of a prism spectrometer or a series of dichroic mirrors into four
spectral bands and detected using four single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detectors, which provide high-quantum efficiency in the red
spectral region. The detectors are connected to a time-correlated single photon counting module to provide sub-nanosecond temporal resolution for distinguishing fluorophores with different fluorescence lifetimes. Maximum-likelihood (ML) methods have been developed for analyzing the temporally and spectrally resolved photon count data from the SPADs to find the contributions from different fluorescent species and from background. Commercially available SPADs exhibit a count-rate dependent time shift in the impulse response function, and hence the instrument incorporates custom modified SPADs with improved timing stability. Nevertheless, there is still some time shift, and hence the ML-analysis has been extended to include this as an adjustable parameter for each individual SPAD. Monte Carlo simulations have also been developed to enable studies of the number of photons needed to resolve specific fluorophores.

▼ The Fabry-Perot spectrometer is an extremely useful tool for retrieving
spectral information of the Oxygen A-band at nadir viewing angles, as well as for remote sensing purposes. Testing the performance of this spectrometer will help us determine possible limitations and improvements needed to be carried out for future missions, so that the scientific objectives can be met successfully. For the calibration setup, a narrow line argon source was used and the procedure was carried out by varying the gap spacing between the etalon plates, thus performing step scans that cover the entire free
spectral range. Valuable information can be acquired, such as the reflective Finesse of the etalon, the degree of parallelism and flatness of the plates, as well as the temperature coefficient of the etalon. Measurements were also performed on O2
interference filters, making use of a diffraction grating spectrometer, in order to understand their behavior with temperature change.

▼ Radio astronomy is the science of observing the heavens at radio frequencies, from a few kHz to approximately 300 GHz. In recent years, radio astronomy has faced a growing interference problem as radio frequency (RF) bandwidth has become an increasingly scarce commodity. A programmable real-time DSP least-mean-square interference canceller was developed and demonstrated as a successful method of excising satellite down-link signals from both an experimental platform at BYU, and the Green Bank Telescope at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in West Virginia. A performance analysis of this cancellation system in the radio astronomy radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation regime constitutes the main contribution of this thesis. The real-time BYU test platform consists of small radio telescopes, low noise RF receivers, and a state-of-the-art DSP platform. This programmable real-time radio astronomy RFI mitigation tool is the first of its kind. Basic tools needed for radio astronomy observations and the analysis and implementation of interference mitigation algorithms were also implemented in the DSP platform, including a power spectral density estimator, a beamformer, and an array signal correlator.
