▼ The present thesis, concerns the design procedure, modeling and implementation of the optimal configuration of the electric part of an experimental power plant, as well as the study of alternative generating unit configurations in the case of power generation from sea waves. An experimental power plant for power generation from sea waves was constructed on Psitalia in the frame of the research project PAVET 00BE142 entitled “Experimental Plant for Power Generation from Sea Waves”. The entire plant consisted of three similar units, each one involving a coupled hydraulic - mechanical - electrical system for wave energy extraction. Moreover, the case of linear synchronous generator with permanent magnets (LPMSG), as alternative unit for electric power generation from sea waves, has been studied. A particular, linear generator with permanent magnets was designed, accounting the features of the sea wave and the behaviour of the floating buoy. Appropriate coupled electromagnetic-mechanical-hydraulic models incorporating Finite Element Analysis (FEA) have been developed, enabling a dynamic simulation of the whole system performance involving a detailed field analysis of the permanent magnet linear generator. Also, a new hybrid simulation model, incorporating finite elements (FE) combined with analytical solution (macroelement) in the air gap area accounting for skewed magnets in linear generators (LPMSG) have been developed. The results of simulation of performance combined with the experimental measurements, illustrate the suitability of the developed models in applications for power generation from sea waves.
▼ Increasing the power density of the DC-DC converters requires the size and weight of the magnetic components, such as inductors and transformers, to be reduced. In this thesis, the losses in nanocrystalline inductor cores are characterised and analysed, including the traditional core loss and the gap loss caused by the air gap fringing flux. The loss calculations will form a basis for the design and optimisation of high power inductors for DC-DC converters for EV applications. This thesis first characterises experimentally the core losses in four nanocrystalline cores over a range of operating conditions that are representative of those encontered in typical high power converter applications, including non-sinusoidal waveforms and DC bias conditions. The core losses are assessed by the measured B-H loops and are characterised as a function of DC flux density, showing that for a fixed AC induction level, the losses can vary by almost an order of magnitude as the DC bias increases and the duty ratio moves away from 0.5. The results provide a more complete picture of the core loss variations with both DC and AC magnetisations than is available in manufactures’ data sheets. An electromagnetic finite element (FE) model is used to examine the gap loss that occurs in finely laminated nanocrystalline cores under high frequency operation. The loss is significant in the design example, contributing to almost half of the total inductor loss, and the gap loss is highly concentrated in the region of the air gap. The dependence of the gap loss on key inductor design parameters and operating condtions is also explored. An empirical equation is derived to provide a design-oriented basis for estimating gap losses. Thermal finite element analysis is used to estimate the temperature rise and identify the hot spot in a nanocrystalline inductor encapsulated in an alumimium case. The temperature distribution in the core largely corresponds to the non-uniform distribution of the gap loss. The thermal FEA can also be used to evaluate different thermal management methods to optimise the design for a more compact component. The FE modelling of gap loss and the thermal predictions are validated experimentally on a foil-wound Finemet inductor, showing good agreement between the predictions and measurements under various operating conditions.

▼ Soils deform as they receive loads from a supported structure. Deformations at the foundations cause the distribution of the loads within the structure to change, thus changing the loads applied to the foundations. This set of behaviors is known as soil-structure interaction. There is a need for accurate and computationally efficient means to simulate soil-structure interaction. This study investigates the suitability of a novel
macroelement model to simulate soil-structure interaction using associative plasticity. The proposed model replaces the soil continuum with a set of elastoplastic springs at each foundation which provide generalized force-displacement behavior.

▼ Commando Country assesses the nature of more than 30 special training centres that operated in the Scottish highlands between 1940 and 1945, in order to explore the origins, evolution and culture of British special service training during the Second World War. These locations were chosen by virtue of the utility of the physical environment of the highland estate, strongly influenced by associated ideas about the challenge of that environment, individual character and the nature of irregular warfare. By virtue of its Scottish geographical perspective, Commando Country diverges from the existing literature by looking across the training establishments used by different organisations, principally Military Intelligence, the Commandos, and Special Operations Executive (SOE), whose histories tend to be considered in isolation. The book investigates the development and function of each category of training centre, the relationships between them, and their place in the broader framework of British and Allied special operations. Based on research in official documentary sources, unpublished and published memoirs and on fieldwork and interviews with surviving participants conducted by the author, Commando Country also presents rare unpublished photographs from public and private sources and artefacts assembled for the exhibition of the same name held at the National War Museum, Edinburgh in 2007. The resulting thesis is that the philosophy and practice improvised at the original school of irregular warfare at Inverailort House in the summer of 1940 permeated the culture of the training centres that developed thereafter. Close attention is accordingly given to the circumstances, organisation and instructing personnel that created the Inverailort syllabus, and the backgrounds and skills brought to bear, some drawn from civilian professions. The application of similar methods to the newly formed Commando forces is then traced. In this context the original operational purposes of individual aspects of the training became standardised into a general test of fitness and character designed to control admission of volunteers into the Commandos, the raiding and assault units that regarded themselves as a new military elite. Simultaneously, the approach pioneered at Inverailort was adapted to form the paramilitary training element of SOE, the organisation that coordinated and supported Resistance organisations in enemy-occupied countries. Particular attention is paid to the dedicated training establishments for Polish and Norwegian SOE units based in Scotland. The book concludes by considering how techniques and philosophy were applied more widely as conventional military training itself evolved, extending influence even into postwar civilian outdoor recreation.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Condition monitoring of induction motors is of much importance for their efficient and reliable operation. Most of the existing electrical techniques of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis are based on current, voltage, vibration and flux measurements external to the motor. Among these, most of them are based on motor stator current analysis. The most popular and well researched group of techniques are based on the motor current signature analysis (MCSA), which reveals motor condition through the changes of the stator current frequency spectrum. Although very powerful, MCSA has its shortcomings, including the need for long sampling times in steady state to achieve acceptable spectral resolution, dependence of successful diagnosis of some faults on the accurate knowledge of the motor slip, and potential ambiguity of interpretations. Besides, the characteristics of external signals such as current, leakage flux etc. are produced in the air gap flux density, which is a function of time and space. It is very information-rich, and contains ample indications of any imbalance or fault once it occurs. When transformed into a signal available for external measurements, this information is greatly reduced and distorted, as well as it loses space dimension. This thesis attempts to address the condition monitoring challenges by removing the limitations of a typical external sensor instrumentation. It is proposed to instrument a motor with an array of miniature Hall Effect Flux Sensors (HEFS) to measure the air gap flux density at multiple points around the air gap circumference. Internal instrumentation with an array of flux sensors is chosen in this thesis, because it allows to directly measure the air gap flux as a function of time and space, thereby conserving the space domain information to the benefit of condition monitoring. It also does not interfere with the motor operation and unlike search coils (which measure flux derivative), HEFS measures flux and their signal is less susceptible to noise distortions, which is particularly important for inverter driven motors. One important point to note is the additional cost due to sensor instrumentation. However, for production-critical large motors used in industries such as mining, petrochemical etc. are produced in fewer numbers, which are expensive to replace in case of a fault or failure. Also, the down time cost of these motors in terms of production loss is much higher than the extra instrumentation cost. Besides, instrumentation cost can be reduced if it is integrated in the manufacturing process of the motor. Additional functionality of the proposed instrumentation is described in the thesis. The resulting certainty about each motor condition at any point in time significantly reduces the risk of unplanned downtime and offsets the instrumentation cost by a large margin. Fundamental theory behind the air gap flux density as a function of time and space, and its distortions introduced by various faults, is analyzed in…

▼ This study serves as an investigation of the current practices of
special education teachers when working with children labeled as Emotionally Disabled. This paper explores research that highlights a critical “gap” that has existed between the research and
special education fields in the provision of support and intervention services for students with emotional disabilities. Although a significant amount of research exists pertaining to best practices and evidence-based interventions when working with children with emotional disabilities; specific research regarding current practices of
special education teachers and to what degree best practices recommendations are being implemented with these students is sparse. The current study is proposed as a means of gaining insight into current practices of
special education teachers in order to evaluate if this proposed “gap” continues to exist, and if so, to identify possible reasons for its continued existence. In this study,
special education teachers in the state of Virginia were asked to complete a survey specific to their current practices when working with students with emotional disabilities and regarding their personal opinions related to the feasibility, practicality, and applicability of scientifically supported evidence-based recommendations when working with students with emotional disabilities within the academic setting.

▼ The participating school system's minority population, notably African Americans, ranked in the top five school systems in academic performance in reading and math when compared to other states and other African American populations across the United States. These measurements were taken from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether there was a significant achievement
gap between races across system-wide assessments on a yearly basis. Results of the multivariate analyses of reading and mathematics scores indicated there were significant differences in both areas at the p <.05 level on the TerraNova, Third Edition. These significant differences lend support to the results of the NAEP testing in 2007 and again in 2009 that demonstrated the
gap. Discussion of the implications of this
gap for the school system was presented.

▼ Historically, there are persistent diploma gaps permeating between general education students and students with disabilities. In comparison to their peers, there are fewer youth with disabilities graduating from high school with regular diplomas. Regular diploma attainment is of critical importance because this credential is viable to postsecondary outcomes such as higher education and meaningful employment.
An analysis of graduation outcomes in Virginia from 2010-2013 revealed that 19 of 132 school divisions met or exceeded statewide performance expectations for youth with disabilities. In alignment with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2010, the Virginia Department of Education monitors and reports Indicator 1: Percent of youth with Individualized Education Programs graduating from high school with a regular diploma using the adjusted four-year cohort graduation rate. Indicator 1 is among four secondary education and transition data indicators that are federally monitored, collected, and analyzed to determine progress or lack of progress.
The purpose of this study was to identify the policies and practices that
special education directors perceived as contributing to meeting the state graduation performance measures for youth with disabilities in 10 Virginia school divisions during the 2010-2013 school terms. A three-round Delphi method was employed to seek consensus from a panel of
Special Education Directors whose divisions are consistently meeting Indicator 1 performance measures. Investigated were their perceptions of best practices and strategies that are paramount in graduating students with disabilities with a regular diploma or higher.
Panelists identified 70% or greater agreement on the importance of six (60%) strategies contributing to regular diploma attainment for this population of students. These statements of practice were determined to be of considerable importance (rated as critically effective or somewhat effective), and in rank order were: 1) providing targeted interventions such as remediation, tutoring, and credit recovery options; 2) conveying high expectations; 3) tracking and monitoring; 4) IEP development with emphasis on Transition, student family participation, exploring continuum options, accommodations and modifications, assessment, and diploma status; 5) promoting learning, attendance, and a positive school environment; and 6) policies that support all students. Further, a theme emerged as it relates to implementation on four of the six statements of practice on which consensus was reached in the final Delphi round. The data provided evidence that student engagement, parental involvement, and building positive relationships with an adult are important factors in support of the identified strategies toward graduating these youth with a regular/standard diploma. Implications for practice were recommended for school and division leaders, and state policymakers.

▼ This thesis presents investigations on
air-cooled
air gap membrane distillation for desalination and the application of radial waveguides based on total internal reflection for solar thermal desalination.
Using an
air-cooled design for an
air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) process may result in significantly lower energy requirements for desalination. Experiments were conducted on AGMD module to study the effect of
air gap, support mesh conductivity and hydrophobicity, condensing surface hydrophobicity. A novel modular design was used in which modules could be used in a series configuration to increase the flux value for the distillate. The output from the series configuration was found to have about three times the production from a single pass water-cooled system with the same temperature difference between the saline and clear water streams. The results also indicated that the mesh conductivity had a favorable effect on the flux value whereas the hydrophobicity of the mesh had no significant effect. The hydrophobicity of the condensing surface was favorable on two accounts: first, it led to an increase in the flux of the distillate at temperatures below 60 °C and second, the temperature difference of the saline feed when it enters and leaves the module is lower which can lead to energy savings and higher yields when used in a series configuration.
The second part of the thesis considers use of low-cost radial waveguides to collect and concentrate solar energy for use in thermal desalination processes. The optical-waveguide-based solar energy concentrators are based on total internal reflection and minimize/eliminate moving parts, tracking structures and cost. The use of optical waveguides for thermal desalination is explored using an analytical closed-form solution for the coupled optical and thermal transport of solar irradiation through a radial planar waveguide concentrator integrated with a central receiver. The analytical model is verified against and supported by computational optical ray tracing simulations. The effects of various design and operating parameters are systematically investigated on the system performance, which is quantified in terms of net thermal power delivered, aperture area required and collection efficiency. Design constraints like thermal stress, maximum continuous operation temperature and structural constraints have been considered to identify realistic waveguide configurations which are suitable for real world applications. The study provides realistic estimates for the performance achievable with radial planar waveguide concentrator-receiver configuration. In addition to this, a cost analysis has been conducted to determine the preferred design configurations that minimize the cost per unit area of the planar waveguide concentrator coupled to the receiver. Considering applications to thermal desalination which is a low temperature application, optimal design configuration of waveguide concentrator-receiver system is identified that result in the minimum levelized cost of power…

The performance characteristics of three-phase motors are essential for economic feasibility studies, for both maintenance and for replacement by motors that have better efficiency, to save energy. There are several procedures based on tests that require mechanical uncoupling, thereby committing practicality, without counting the cost of the instrumentation involved. This work presents the study and implementation of two different methods to estimate the efficiency in low intrusive order, method of air gap torque and method of equivalent circuit. In the latter, two techniques are studied, the first estimates the equivalent circuit parameters though a set of equations defined by the resolution of the machine model, and second, estimates the equivalent circuit parameters by means of an identification algorithm for least squares. Finally shows the results of applying the proposed methodologies in the Laboratory of Energy Efficiency and Water Sanitation – LENHS in Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, where it is then presented an analysis of these techniques, considering aspects of precision an uncertainty.

surrounded by concave with 146º. Air velocity was measured at 56
locations, distributed dependent on construction of concave. The
air velocity was measured using a hot wire anemometer unit. The
output data was recorded on PC using 10 bit ADC converter. Nine

at cylinder-concave clearances of: 36 mm at front, 32 mm in middle,
and 20 mm at rear part of concave were used in this experiment. The
results of the experiment show that there were significant
differences of air velocity among cylinder peripheral speeds and
locations. The air velocity increased with increased cylinder
peripheral speed and towards the rear of the concave. Air flow
velocity within threshing crescent dependence on technological and
constructional parameters of the threshing cylinder is presented.

▼ Oil-paper insulation system is commonly used for power transformer internal insulation. Partial discharge (PD) is one of the main reasons for aging and disruption of the insulation system.
Air-
gap PD occurs in gas-filled cavity in transformer oil-paper insulation and is an extremely common and serious defect type. For
air-
gap PD analysis, most experiments were conducted through the standard
air-
gap discharge model recommended by CIGRE. Some work has been done to diagnose
air-
gap PD severity. However, the effect of cavity size on PD activity has not been emphasized yet. My thesis systematically discusses the effect of cavity size on
air-
gap PD activity through experiments. And pattern recognition classifier is a critical part in PD diagnosis. Artificial neural network and support vector machine are commonly used nowadays and show some good results in site application. To enhance PD diagnosis accuracy is still a main task. In this work, Random Forests is first time introduced in PD diagnosis.
Experiments show that large cavity PD possesses lower inception field, higher charge magnitude, higher inception phase. PD happening in large cavity is more harmful than that happening in small cavity. Besides, during
Air-
gap PD development process, charge magnitude variation of large and small cavity model both presents concave curve shape with respect to time and discharge phase slowly expends. For small cavity model, when
air-
gap PD comes to the last stage, positive PD even can expand to the negative half cycle and vice versa. And through clustering, the PD development stage for large and small cavity model are both divided into three stages, initial discharge stage, weak discharge stage and pre-breakdown stage. For
air-
gap PD development stage identification, total accuracy of random forests classifier is 93.15%, showing a better performance than RBF neural network.

▼ Membrane Distillation (MD) is a very promising new technology which can be coupled with renewableenergies and/or waste heat to produce pure water at a low-cost. MD is extremely dependent upon theperformance of the membrane, as it dictates the mass transfer, the heat transfer and the long-termapplication. Unfortunately, there are no commercially produced MD-specific membranes at this point intime. This project aims at finding correlations between membrane characteristics and their performancesin order to define the optimal morphologies and operating conditions for a MD-specific membrane. Todo so, the characteristics of 3 PTFE membranes initially designed for MF were determined throughporosity measurements and microscopic imaging, while their performances were evaluated by measuringthe air permeability and by testing them on an AGMD bench-scale unit.It was found that the most desirable characteristics for a membrane with a high flux are a film with largeporosity, low tortuosity, a small thickness with a resistance to compaction and that has not been subjectedto thickness altering processes. Moreover, the surface pore sizes need to be small enough to avoid surfacewetting, and the backing layer should not restrict the vapor flow in a significant way and should possesslarge open areas. As the feed water temperature and/or the flow rate rises, the flux increases and the energy requirementdecreases, this means that one should ideally aim for the highest possible operating conditions whichrequires larger costs. Therefore it is necessary to find a cost effective solution for each application. The results show that, for comparative purposes, Gurley values are good indicators of a membrane’soverall performance in MD, despite the fact that it does not always accurately predict it. It has also beenfound that membrane specifications provided by manufacturers are generally only approximations, andshould therefore not be used as very precise data for comparing membranes.

▼ Water stress is an ongoing problem in many places in the world, while the demand for clean and safe freshwater is growing due to the increasing population. In many developing countries, water supplies often are contaminated with arsenic, fluoride, etc. Therefore, it is important to realize that water scarcity and contamination issues concern only one sector but many. HVR Water Purification AB is developing a water purification prototype – ELIXIR 500 - using the air gap membrane technology and is implemented in Odisha, India, aiming to supply with 200 litre water daily. This thesis aims to estimate future energy sources to supply this prototype and explore the possibilities of using only renewable energy resources from technical, economic, and environmental perspectives. These are achieved by firstly identifying the energy possibilities in Odisha, India, and then calculating the feasibility of each solution chosen and finally analyzing the results. Among the energy sources, which are power grid, wind and solar power, diesel generator and solar-diesel hybrid system. It is found that the energy source to the prototype supplied by the power grid is 0.057 USD per litre water, which is the cheapest option. However, it is not feasible due to the lack of electrification from the local network. Meanwhile, the solar-diesel hybridized energy system is the most economical option if renewable energy sources are integrated with 0.11 USD per litre water.

▼ Federal legislation known as the No Child Left Behind act has required states to close achievement gaps. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between special education spending by districts in the state of Tennessee and standardized achievement for students with disabilities.
Secondary data were obtained from the Tennessee Department of Education’s website (<a href="http://www.tn.gov/education">www.tn.gov/education</a>). Data from each local education association were collected for the years of 2010-2014 in the areas of special education spending, special education population, and TCAP proficiency percentages in reading and math grades 3-8. Data from each local education association were collected for the years of 2011-2014 for gap size percentages between students with and without disabilities for reading and math grades 3-8 and the percentage of economically disadvantaged students.
The researcher performed 6 Pearson correlation coefficient tests for this analysis. The findings showed a positive correlation between spending and performance on standardized assessments in the areas of reading and mathematics for students with disabilities. The analysis indicated that per pupil expenditures in special education has not had a statistically significant impact on reducing the gap size between students with and without disabilities. However, the percentage of economically disadvantaged students in a local education association inversely impacted the gap size. Those local education agencies with a higher population of economically disadvantaged students were more likely to have smaller gap sizes between students with and without disabilities in reading and mathematics on standardized testing.

▼ Tinnitus is a chronic disorder, hallmarked by persistent ear ringing, which plagues millions. Currently, tinnitus is only diagnosable in humans by self-report: the goal of this project was to determine whether a startle reflex paradigm could be used as a detector of tinnitus symptoms. The startle response is a brainstem reflex, initiated by sudden change in the environment. Responses can be facilitated by embedding a startle stimulus in background noise, or inhibited by preceding the startle stimulus by a prepulse (PPI) or a gap in background noise (GPI). This series of three studies examined the efficacy of using silent gaps as prepulse inhibitors of the eyeblink component of the human acoustic startle response, with the expectation that the perceived sound associated with tinnitus would partially fill the gap and lesson the expected inhibition. Study 1 examined what inhibitory patterns could be expected if the gap filling sounded different from the background, as well as quantification of GPI compared to traditional PPI. Study 2 examined progressively louder prepulses and progressively quieter partial gaps to evaluate expected inhibition if the tinnitus filling was quieter than the surrounding background. Study 3 tested the originally proposed paradigm with tinnitus and healthy hearing control samples. Our results did not support the use of this paradigm as a possible diagnostic measure of tinnitus.

▼ As the United States (U.S.) population continues to change and become racially/ethnically, culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse, so does the population in public schools (Institute of Education Sciences, 2010). Additionally, the number of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students has been overrepresented in the subgroup of students with learning disabilities (SLD) (Artiles & Ortiz, 2002; Kalynpur & Harry, 2012; Klingner & Harry, 2014). Therefore, there is a need to adapt the curriculum and pedagogy to teach the growing number of diverse students in public schools. The results of national assessments show that students of color have lagged behind their White counterparts in mathematics achievement over the years (Cortes, Goodman, & Nomi, 2013). Despite the push to remediate this problem, teachers continue to use ineffective teacher-led practices and the achievement
gap persists across public schools (Williams, 2011).
The use of cultural responsive teaching (CRT) among CLD students is promising (Santamaria, 2009). However, there is need to investigate the use of these practices in Algebra I courses with CLD students with SLD.
The present 17-week pre-post study compared student achievement in Algebra I courses between two groups of CLD students with SLD (N=63). These groups were (a) 31 students who received CRT (treatment group) by teachers who received CRT training and (b) 32 students who received instruction by teachers who did not receive CRT training (control group). There are significant differences between the treatment and the control group on the CLD students with SLD Algebra I Mid-Year Assessment (MYA) and the students’ Mathematics Self-Efficacy scores (MSES). The teachers’ level of cultural consciousness had an insignificant covariance on the Algebra I MYA, yet the teachers’ observations and their cultural responsive self-assessment had a direct effect on the Algebra I MYA. Additionally, there was not significant interaction between MSES and TCS on the students’ Algebra I MYA. The results of the study suggest that the use of CRT is a promising practice to improve CLD students’ with SLD Algebra I achievement and perhaps close the math achievement
gap.

▼ Large disparities exist in the dropout and
incarceration rates of different races, genders, and disabilities.
These two phenomena, commonly referred to as the Achievement
Gap
and Incarceration
Gap, also contribute to other problems within
society and cost taxpayers billions of dollars annually. Because of
the intersection of race, gender, and disability, African-American
males in
special education have both the highest dropout and
incarceration rates. However, few studies have focused on this
specific subgroup and the factors contributing to their
significantly lower outcomes. The purpose of this study is to
examine the differences between successful and unsuccessful
African-American males in
special education at a Los Angeles High
School. Specifically, it will compare high-achieving and
non-delinquent African-American males in
special education to their
low-achieving and delinquent counterparts. This comparison will be
done across various environmental and personal (psychological)
factors in an effort to explain what contributes to the high
dropout and incarceration rates among the population. A total of
fifteen environmental factors across the home, community, and
school environments were explored. The psychological constructs of
self-efficacy and school engagement were explored as personal
factors. Data were collected utilizing a mixed-method approach with
quantitative surveys and qualitative focus groups. Quantitatively,
chi-square tests were used to compare frequencies across
environmental factors while t-tests were used to compare student
means across personal factors. Qualitative data was organized into
themes and reported with its corresponding research questions. A
total of 31 students completed surveys and 16 students participated
in focus groups. All participants were between the ages of 14
through 19. Findings indicate significant differences across both
the environment and personal factors of successful and unsuccessful
African-American males in
special education exist. Findings also
indicate more significant differences exist between non-delinquent
and delinquent students than high and low achieving students. Based
on these findings, several changes may be implemented to reduce
dropout and incarceration rates among this most vulnerable
group.

▼ This thesis introduces a new approach to seismic Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) analysis method for shallow foundation using simplified models. The study is inspired by the increasing number of interest amongst engineers and researchers in the nonlinear behavior of shallow foundation as the behavior is unavoidable. The conventional methods of capturing this phenomenon includes a detailed Finite Element Method (FEM) model. However, due to large computational effort in modeling and analysis, it is not a feasible option in the current practice.
In this thesis, a method is proposed where macro element for static inelastic behavior and a recursive parameter model for frequency-dependent dynamic characteristics of soil-foundation system are integrated. The proposed method is verified in the two dimensional parametric space of frequency and inelasticity. Then, a practical application example of the proposed modelling method is presented.

▼ Increasing the power density of the DC-DC
converters requires the size and weight of the magnetic components,
such as inductors and transformers, to be reduced. In this thesis,
the losses in nanocrystalline inductor cores are characterised and
analysed, including the traditional core loss and the gap loss
caused by the air gap fringing flux. The loss calculations will
form a basis for the design and optimisation of high power
inductors for DC-DC converters for EV applications. This thesis
first characterises experimentally the core losses in four
nanocrystalline cores over a range of operating conditions that are
representative of those encontered in typical high power converter
applications, including non-sinusoidal waveforms and DC bias
conditions. The core losses are assessed by the measured B-H loops
and are characterised as a function of DC flux density, showing
that for a fixed AC induction level, the losses can vary by almost
an order of magnitude as the DC bias increases and the duty ratio
moves away from 0.5. The results provide a more complete picture of
the core loss variations with both DC and AC magnetisations than is
available in manufactures’ data sheets. An electromagnetic finite
element (FE) model is used to examine the gap loss that occurs in
finely laminated nanocrystalline cores under high frequency
operation. The loss is significant in the design example,
contributing to almost half of the total inductor loss, and the gap
loss is highly concentrated in the region of the air gap. The
dependence of the gap loss on key inductor design parameters and
operating condtions is also explored. An empirical equation is
derived to provide a design-oriented basis for estimating gap
losses.Thermal finite element analysis is used to estimate the
temperature rise and identify the hot spot in a nanocrystalline
inductor encapsulated in an alumimium case. The temperature
distribution in the core largely corresponds to the non-uniform
distribution of the gap loss. The thermal FEA can also be used to
evaluate different thermal management methods to optimise the
design for a more compact component. The FE modelling of gap loss
and the thermal predictions are validated experimentally on a
foil-wound Finemet inductor, showing good agreement between the
predictions and measurements under various operating
conditions.

Otitis media (OM) is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in childhood. Due to its high prevalence and worldwide distribution, OM is still regarded as a public health issue. Nevertheless, few studies have assessed involvement of the contralateral ear (CLE) in patients with chronic otitis media (COM). To demonstrate the bilateral nature of COM, we designed three distinct studies, which focused on histopathology and anatomy, clinical findings and physiology (both previously published), and, finally, auditory function. Objective: To measure auditory function in the CLE in a sample of COM patients by means of air-conduction thresholds, bone-conduction thresholds, and the air-bone gap, and to compare CLE audiometry findings in patients with non-cholesteatomatous (NC-COM) or cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media (CCOM). Methods: This was a cross-sectional, contemporary and comparative study of 1000 patients with a diagnosis of COM. Clinical ear examination, video otoscopy, and pure-tone audiometry (PTA) were performed. Results: The overall prevalence rate of air-bone gap was approximately 40%, both in the total sample and after stratification by type of OM (393 [39.2%] patients overall, 279 [40.3%] in the NC-COM group, 113 [37.17%] in the CCOM group). Conclusions: As did clinical and histopathology findings in previous studies, audiological evaluation revealed a substantial prevalence of CLE involvement, providing evidence of the…

▼ Plastic materials form an important constituent of connectors and PCB substrates which are indispensable for connector and printed circuit industries. Plastics such as FR-4, PTFE (Teflon), PVC and silica glass are some of the commonly used materials for connector and printed circuit fabrication. With high-speed electronics being the increasing trend, computers, electronic chips and other electronic devices are progressively moving to higher frequencies with CPU speeds approaching 5 GHz and more in the future. Many systems are operating in 1-10 GHz range, and in the future, applications running at frequencies as high as 20 GHz with high data rates will be feasible. Knowledge of the performance of the materials constituting these devices is an imperative and challenging research task for designers. Dielectric characterization of plastic materials commonly used in electronic devices over a wide frequency range determines the electrical performance of the plastics and in turn of the electronic devices at high frequencies. In this thesis, wideband dielectric characterization of Triethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate Ester (TrEGDMA) organic plastic material (named Visi Jet SR-200 commercially) is performed using coaxial airline technique in the frequency range of 1-18 GHz and free space measurement technique in the frequency range of 8-12 GHz. This organic plastic has not been characterized over such a wide frequency range, therefore, dielectric characterization of this plastic is the main contribution of the research. The coaxial airline technique has been used to perform accurate measurements of dielectric properties of the plastic over frequency range of 1-18 GHz. A simulation analysis is also performed using known material (Teflon) as well as unknown plastic material to be characterized (TrEGDMA) to determine reflection and transmission coefficients and compare them with the measured results. Dielectric models for the measured permittivity data have been proposed to analytically describe the frequency dependency of dielectric properties of the TrEGDMA plastic over 1-18 GHz frequency range which is another important contribution of the research. Extraction of permittivity from measured scattering parameters using analytical closed form expressions has also been described. The dielectric characterization of the TrEGDMA plastic material will contribute towards determining the signal integrity performance of interconnects with this plastic as a substrate and will help to determine whether or not the material is fit to be used as a substrate in interconnects for high speed data transmission.

▼ The thin solidifying
shell in the meniscus region of a continuous caster
deforms due to severe contraction in steels of
near-peritectic composition, thereby exacerbating the
risks of cracking and in the extreme, breakouts. The main
purpose of the present study was to contribute to an
improved understanding of the fundamentals underpinning
the solidification behaviour of selected steels of
industrial importance and to relate these fundamentals to
industrial practice. A further aim was to explore the
potential of countermeasures aimed at avoiding or at
least minimizing surface defects that originate as a
result of the occurrence of the peritectic phase
transition. Several experimental
techniques were employed to simulate various aspects of
solidification events that occur in the meniscus region
of an operating continuous caster. In-situ observations
of solidification in addition to subsequent solid-state
phase transformations were made by employing a concentric
solidification technique in a high-temperature
laser-scanning confocal microscope (HTLSCM) in real time
and at temperature. It is possible by this technique to
effectively simulate early solidification events
occurring in an operating continuous caster and the
solidification behaviour of a series of steel of
near-peritectic composition and of industrial importance
have been assessed and compared. Differential scanning
calorimetry (DSC) was employed to determine the exact
phase relationships in the selected steels as a function
of temperature as an aid to the interpretation of the
outcomes of the solidification studies. A potential
countermeasure that can be taken in industrial practice
to counteract uneven solidification is to texture the
mould surface. In order to explore and evaluate the
effect of different mould surface textures on reducing
the unevenness of the solidifying, a simple dip-test was
developed, followed by more sophisticated experiments and
analyses in a continuous casting mould simulator. In
parallel to the texture studies in the mould-simulator
certain aspects of the interaction between mould, strand
and mould-flux have also been assessed. The stresses
encountered in and development of these stresses in the
course of solidification, were assessed by the use of a
submerged split-chill contraction (SSCC) technique. In an
attempt to relate the fundamental studies to operational
practice, an in-plant study of off-corner crack formation
was conducted. The solidification
studies conducted in a high-temperature laser-scanning
microscope revealed that the velocity…

During the design process of a building, the energetic modelling of the solar envelop is often imprecise. The purpose of the present work is the detailed description of solar shading devices that induce a chimney effect such as claddings or blinds, which would allow their promotion in order to meet the industrial needs of the sector. An experimental platform – south facing wall with a shading solar device that define an air gap – has been set up and allow the measurement of temperatures, air flows in the ventilated air gap, and the incident solar radiation. Two different wooden claddings, one type of blinds and one type of expanded metal were considered.A 1D model has been developed by considering precisely the heat transfers in the system. Three families of convection model are identified, presented and integrated in the overall model. The description of the airflow in the air gap is chosen from analysis of the experimental results.A simplified model that allows the integration of such solar shading devices in a building simulation platform has been developed; it is based on the parameterization of external solicitations as function of the shading device properties. The calculation method of the solar factor is presented. The intrinsic nature of the solar factor is then discussed using sensibility analysis.

▼ This master thesis investigates if there is an induction motor configuration that can be used with a flywheel energy storage system, that uses passve superconducting magnetic bearings (SMBs). The configurations should be able to be designed with induction motor building blocks that are commercially available. The method used to investigate this was simulations of different induction motor configurations in the finite element analysis software COMSOL. The simulations show that when larger air-gaps than that of a commercial IM unit are used it is possible to use SMBs in the IM. SMBs have the advantage of having zero resistance which makes it possible to store energy without resistance losses. However it was found that by using and IM with SMBs the generated power would be lower than that of a commercial unit.

▼ This thesis describes a novel device, the Virtual Air Gap Variable Reactor (VAG-VR), which is capable of producing a continuously
variable reactance by locally saturating a small section of the reactor core via an embedded dc control winding. Variable Reactors have many applications in the power industry such as control of line power flow, voltage regulation, reactive line compensation and limiting inrush currents. A variable reactor is most commonly implemented as a thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) by switching in and out a constant reactance to achieve an averaged variable reactance. By using a virtual air gap, a continuously variable reactance is possible. The VAG-VR offers a better dynamic response, without introducing the harmonics created by the thyristor switching of a TCR. The VAG-VR gives low triplen harmonics and therefore allows control of reactive power in single phase or unbalanced three phase systems as would be required in the distribution system.
An experimental prototype VAG-VR was developed to investigate three main performance measures: steady state performance, dynamic response and harmonic performance. Over the operating range of the VAG-VR inductance was varied from 100% to 9% of its original value. The dynamic response of the VAG-VR is approximately one tenth of a cycle. This compares favorably to a TCR which responds in approximately half a cycle. Harmonics are also shown to be significantly reduced in the VAG-VR compared to the TCR.
A dynamic model of the VAG-VR, suitable for incorporation into power system simulations, was developed and validated. Parameters were determined both experimentally and through finite element method (FEM) simulations. Both experimental and simulation results indicate that the VAG-VR offers a technically viable alternative to the TCR.

▼ Air insulation, especially its efficiency, is often underestimated and most often it is recommended as combination of several methods by our experts. It is known that flowing
air used to eliminate excessive humidity in lower construction is insignificantly promoted. Already our ancestors in ancient Rome had experience with implementation of
air insulations. However, nowadays such design is connected with many doubts and it forces us to use sense, especially knowledge of construction physics. So it urges higher technical precision when designing functional ventilation system. Each building is actually a unique object, with regard to its position and used properties, that is why certain natural conditions must be accepted when designing. It is more complicated and figuratively speaking it can be written in c. 20 equations of twenty unknowns. Other problems arise in unknown coefficients to individual parameters and their effects. From another point of view it is the issue of changing
air during the day, passing fronts, annual cycles and all of these in relation to internal environment of the building, materials used in the construction, land properties of rocks, and last but not least, relation to the terrain around the building. Then there are the effects of the building's altitudes etc. In total they are cycles with sine character of dampening and drying. The thesis discusses how to test the functionality of
AIR insulations designed for the floor ventilation in historic buildings and follows on from the previously published articles. A flow analysis is being performed on an object of the city of Žirovnice which has been registered in the list of cultural monuments and was built as a brewery in the years 1589-1592 on the site of an older medieval building. This article brings new
air-flow element. The aim of the article is to analyse in detail the
air flow in a specific floor void with the aid of modern CFD programs and experimental measurements using the ALMEMO

▼ My bachelor thesis deals with the issue of overview diagram of magnetic fields of basic free-phase winding. It is divided into four parts. The first part focuses on basic winding types and types of their connection. The second part describes the issue of analytic calculation of the magnetic field intensity in the
air gap of rotating machines. This description is easier and faster than modern method of final elements in some cases because it displays course of particular harmonics and their partial sums for selected magnetic fields. The third part presents Görges diagrams of basic winding types and finally there is a calculation of the winding factor shown on two examples in the fourth part.
Advisors/Committee Members: Ondrůšek, Čestmír (advisor), Skalka, Miroslav (referee).
Subjects/Keywords: Intensita magnetického pole; vzduchová mezera; Görgesovův diagram; cívka; vinutí.; Magnetic field intensity; air-gap; Görges diagram; coil; winding.

▼ Thermally protective clothing garments are necessary pieces of equipment that ensure the life safety of firefighters. In this analysis, material samples of such garments are tested experimentally with and without the presence of both moisture and a thermally activated, expanding
air-
gap. Moisture is delivered to samples via a porous baseplate with an integral fluid supply system, simulating perspiration. Operation of the expanding
air-
gap is controlled by a custom-designed assembly of shape-memory rings, which undergo a shape transformation over a predetermined temperature range. Samples with varying characteristic layers and arrangements are subjected to a controlled thermal exposure. The performances of tested samples are evaluated based on normalized temperature parameters. Assembly characteristics offering the greatest protective performance are then established. Results suggest that limiting moisture absorption in the thermal liner of a garment and implementing
air-gaps of increasing thickness improve the protective performance of firefighter protective clothing.
Advisors/Committee Members: di Marzo, Marino (advisor).
