▼ The reserve growth potential of existing conventional oil reservoirs is huge. This research, through numerical simulation, aims to evaluate pattern size reduction as a strategy for improving waterflood recovery in undersaturated oil reservoirs. A plethora of studies have reported improvements in waterflood recovery resulting from pattern size reduction in heterogeneous reservoirs. The dependence of waterflood recovery on pattern size was attributed to factors such as areal reservoir discontinuity, preferential flooding directions, “wedge-edge” oil recovery, irregular pattern geometry, communication with water-bearing zones, vertical reservoir discontinuity, and project economics (Driscoll, 1974). Though many of these publications relied on decline curve analysis in estimating ultimate oil recovery, simulations completed in this thesis support their findings, specifically for compartmentalized reservoirs, fractured reservoirs, and layered reservoirs. Geostatistically-generated permeability fields were employed in the creation of various types of reservoir models. These models were populated with vertical production and injection wells. Sensitivity analysis was then performed on three development scenarios: 160, 40, and 10 acre five-spots. Based on assigned production and injection constraints, the quantity of oil recovered at simulation termination was used to calculate ultimate recovery efficiency. In homogeneous reservoir models, simulation results suggest that waterflood recovery was independent of pattern size. Similar results were also obtained from models with highly-variable non-zero permeabilities. On the other hand, pattern size reduction was found to enhance oil recovery from reservoir models with a high degree of permeability anisotropy. In such reservoirs, recovery was found to be highly dependent on bottom-hole injection pressures. The higher the injection pressure the larger the quantity of oil bypassed by widely spaced patterns. Likewise, high infill potential exists for reservoir models exhibiting areal discontinuity. In these types of models, the improvement in waterflood recovery resulting from pattern size reduction was directly related to the percentage of imbedded zero-permeability grid blocks. Ultimate oil recovery depended on the percolation of permeable grid blocks between production and injection wells. Increasing well density also enhanced waterflood recovery in vertically discontinuous reservoir models. In such layered reservoirs, the amount oil unswept with large patterns was considerably diminished because of the improved injection profiles associated with tighter patterns. ▼ As the sweetpotato industry moves towards more processed products, there is a need to develop strategies in which to optimize total yield and reduce costs. Unlike the fresh market product, desirable processing roots are larger in size and overall tonnage is preferred over aesthetic appeal. Plant spacing and row width along with planting dates and harvest dates are believed to affect the size and tonnage of sweetpotato roots. The Beauregard and Evangeline varieties were planted at an early planting date (June 1) and a late planting date (July 1) on 38 and 42 inch row spacing. Harvests were at ~125 and ~140 days after planting. The delay in harvest increased yield of all grade categories except for U.S. No.1. The first planting date was also superior to the second planting date. Row width had a marginal effect. Only the canner grade was significantly higher for the 42 inch width in 2010 which caused the total yield category to be significantly higher. Plant spacing was less important and demonstrated that lower planting densities are possible. Furthermore, results demonstrated that a delayed harvest does not reduce the U.S. No.1 yield and only increases total yield. Storage root quality must be maintained all the while reducing costs. Consumers demand processed sweetpotato products that taste as good as the fresh market product. Many times roots for processing are not cured and therefore do not gain in sugar contents and visual appeal. Roots could possibly be left in the field after de-vining and before harvest in the hot, humid times of the year which is similar to the curing room environment. Beauregard and Evangeline varieties were de-vined in successive days from day 0 to day 4 early in the harvest season (~September 1) and late in the harvest season (~November 1). Raw and French fry roots were analyzed for sucrose, fructose, glucose, maltose, and total sugar content. As the de-vining period was extended, few treatments showed trends toward higher sugar contents. Significant differences did exist but they were not consistent enough to recommend a reliable field curing schedule that would increase sugar contents.

▼ Background: Family planning is a key component of reproductive health and is one of the effective interventions in reducing maternal and infant mortality. Despite family planning activities having started in the 1960s in Zambia, the contraceptive utilization rate is only 34.2%. One of the reasons for the non-usage of family planning methods by married women is opposition from husbands.Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding family planning among married men, to compare in which ways and to what extent they differ from their wives, and its implications for future family planning programmes.Design: The study was a cross-sectional descriptive study. A questionnaire involving both closed-and-open-ended questions was used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data Setting: Low, medium and high density residential areas of Lusaka district, Zambia Subjects: The study included 280 married couples who were interviewed using a structured questionnaire.Results: About 97.9% of married men and 97.5% of their wives knew about family planning. Most of the men (82.4%) approved of family planning whilst only 7.0%disapproved. These findings were comparable to those of their wives (83.4% and 8.9% respectively). Men’s desire for more children (50.4%) was greater than that of their wives(14.3%), but their ideal family size was the same, at 3.9 children. About 64.5% of married men were using a method of family planning at the time of the study. Education was strongly associated with attitude and practice of contraception (p= 0.002 and p<0.0001 respectively). Socio-economic status was also strongly associated with contraceptive use (p= 0.004). Conclusion: Family planning awareness and approval rates among married men are high. Their contraception use is, however, lower than expected though it is higher than the national level. Men are more interested in family planning than often assumed, but they need more information and education regarding family planning in order to further increase the contraceptive utilization rate.

▼ Tests do not only assess what was learned, but they also enhance learning itself. This testing effect is even stronger if the learner receives corrective feedback after a retrieval test. Research concerning the optimal timing of this feedback shows various results. The number of errors could be crucial. The more errors have been made, the more beneficial immediate feedback seems to be; the less errors have been made, the more beneficial delayed feedback seems to be. Initial test score is an indication for the extent of the learner’s mental model about a subject. Moreover, response certitude seems to be an indicator for the extent of mental model. The research question of this study is: to what extent does the size of one’s mental model of a subject determine when corrective feedback can be given best? In this quantitative experiment, 112 nine years old students wrote down concepts related to World War II. This subject was not taught at school. Then a test about the subject was presented. One group of students got corrective feedback immediately after answering a question, the other group received the feedback after another lesson. All students indicated how sure they were of each answer. The next day, all students did the same test again. A multiple regression analysis was conducted, with feedback condition and extent of mental model (i.e., number of concepts written down before the first test, initial test score and mean response certitude) as independent variables and learning gain as the dependent variable. The research question concerned the interaction effect of condition and extent of mental model. This interaction effect was nonsignificant. In this experiment, extent of mental model and optimal feedback timing were not related. Possibly, this can be explained as follows. Although extent of mental model differed a lot amongst students, all had some knowledge about the subject. Possibly, the crucial question is whether an intrinsically right answer to a test item exists or not. If students know that test items are real, they will try to retrieve the answer from long term memory. If they know that the correct answers cannot be known beforehand, taking a test is initial learning, whereby new information should be processed via the working memory. In such cases, immediate feedback might contribute to this initial processing, which could explain better results after immediate feedback in such experiments. The brain is the single most expensive organ in the human body (Berg, Tymoczko, & Stryer, 2002). Given that energy is scarce, evolutionary pressures ought to promote the development of cognitive systems that efficiently attend to and learn our environment (Christie & Schrater, 2015). One way of achieving efficiency involves reducing the amount of resources we devote to information that is already well-learned. Although the idea that attention is biased against redundancy is well supported (Posner & Cohen, 1984; Tipper, 1985), evidence for a similar bias in learning and memory is less clear. The classic spacing effect (Ebbinghaus, 1885) does imply that immediate repetitions triggers ‘deficient processing’ and poor memory relative to spaced repetitions (Hintzman, 1976). However, the link between the spacing effect and deficient processing relies on indirect inference. In this thesis, I propose that the repetition decrement effect (Rosner, López-Benítez, D’Angelo, Thomson, & Milliken, 2018) is a direct measure of deficient processing. The repetition decrement effect is a recognition memory deficit for words presented twice at study relative to words presented only once. In this thesis, this effect occurred when: (1) the first presentation of two identical words was poorly processed, and (2) the second presentation of two identical words followed immediately after the first. When repetitions were spaced, repetition always improved recognition. The interaction between repetition and spacing provides evidence that the repetition decrement effect is driven by the same ‘deficient processing’ mechanism that underlies the spacing effect. An instance model of memory (based on Minerva-AL; Jamieson, Crump, and Hannah, 2012) that mathematically formalises this deficient processing mechanism successfully predicted both the repetition decrement and spacing effects. The repetition decrement effect represents the strongest evidence to date that, like attention, learning mechanisms are mediated by an adaptive system that biases against the processing of redundant information.

This study consists of three chapters in which the first two focus on education and the impact of public education policies on crime rates, while the last chapter explores the relationship between education and birth spacing and fertility. The first chapter presents a theoretical model where crime and education are endogenous results, considering the presence of government interventions to expand access to education and incentivize schooling. In the second chapter, I developed a model of household choice where individuals decide whether working in the legal or illegal sector as well as how much of their resources to invest in the education of their children. The model is calibrated and simulated using Indian data at district level to study the dynamics behind the occupation and education choices of the household, in order to characterize the conditions, in terms of education access, education quality and crime deterrence technology, that determine a decline of crime rates. The third chapter is an empirical study of the relationship between education and fertility in Sub-Saharan Africa, between economics and demography. In this work the latest Demographic and Health Surveys are used to explore the effect of the level of education of the mothers on the inter-birth intervals for higher-order births. The reason for focusing on inter-birth intervals, while omitting first births, is that the number of days between two births, or spacing, is a key element to describe and understand the reproductive attitudes of women and households, especially in countries where the demographic transition is not yet complete, like it is the case of Sub-Saharan Africa. That is studying intervals we are able to better understand the global relationship between education and fertility. Even if the topic and the methods of the first two papers significantly differ from the third one, they all share the interest to better evaluate the role of education on economic growth. In particular, crime and violence as well as high fertility rates and population growth undermine economic investment. In this regard, the objective of this thesis is to contribute to an improved understanding of the diverse reasons and peculiar dynamics by which these factors might affect economic growth potential. The study is targeted on developing countries in which free access to education is only a recent achievement and where a greater effort is needed to improve the quality of the education system and teaching.

▼ This study numerically examined the span-wise efficiency of a transonic compressor stage representative of a modern jet engine. Two simulations of a compressor stage with different axial spacing between blade-rows were studied to determine the influence on the fluid flow. The two spacing are denoted as Close and Far. The time-accurate Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes computational algorithm MSU-TURBO with a CMOTT turbulence model was used for both cases. All solutions are three-dimensional and model WG-rotor relative motion through a sliding-mash interface and phase-lagged boundary conditions. At reduced spacings the compressor stage is less efficiency, with the largest difference occurring in the mid-span region. One reason for this trend is the wake from the upstream wake generator does not completely mix with the main passage flow prior to entering the rotor passage with decreased axial gaps. Anthoer major unsteady factor identified that influences the compressor efficiency is the tip clearance flow. In the Far case, the tip vortex did not reach spans below 80%. However, for the Close case, the tip vortex reached to around 40% span. Examining the flow one rotor chord downstream revealed the region between 40% and 60% span to be the main difference between the two axial spacings. Additionally, the rotor tip leakage at the reduced spacing occurs around 30% chord, while the Far casing leakage flow does not appear until 50% chord. The consequence of the early appearance of the tip vortex in the Close case is the greater axial distance that the vortex has to drift to lower spans. The greater strength of the Close spacing leakage flow over the Far case may be another reason the vortex is able to influence the mid-span region. The conclusions reached in this analysis are: the upstream wakes interact with the rotor boundary layer and the tip flow is a major factor at reduced spacings. The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons for efficiency losses, therefore further investigations into the correlation between axial spacing and efficiency loss are needed. ▼ INTRODUCTION: The residents in the Low Country region of South Carolina consist of a predominantly low-income, African American population with a history of trauma and experiences of racism. Chronic conditions, unintended pregnancies, and adverse birth outcomes are prevalent. Many women experience rapid repeat pregnancies (RRP) due to lack of access to choices in contraceptive methods or lack of education on the dangers of RRP and prevention through contraception. Low Country Healthy Start (LCHS) aims to ensure that perinatal women and adolescents in the service area who enrolled received adequate prenatal and postpartum care, educational and counseling services, and contraceptive methods, including a Depo Provera injection at discharge (D1) after their index birth in LCHS. Previous research agree that black women, adolescents, low education, mental health, and past trauma are all associated with RRP, and lack adolescents are less likely to retain a form of contraception that requires maintenance and proper usage. AIM: To (1) examine the effect of D1 and other variables on time to RRP; and to (2) examine the effect of receiving various forms of contraception and their use over time, including the Depo injection (D2) on time to RRP. METHODS: Clients included in the analysis either delivered a baby while enrolled in LCHS or had complete data on all necessary variables (n=761). The Cox regression model was fitted to model the effect of receiving different contraceptive methods as well as relevant and statistically significant (α=0.05) risk factors on time to RRP. RESULTS: For Aim 1, D1 resulted in a hazard rate about 46% lower than that of a non-D1 (unadjusted HR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.36- 0.83; adjusted HR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.34-0.8). However, after adjusting for other variables (age, unplanned index pregnancy, physical abuse during pregnancy, and postpartum depression score) and the time-varying effect of D1, D1 resulted in a HR of 29.63 (β = 3.39, 95% CI: 6.049- 145.141), that decreased at a natural log function of time (HR = 0.22, β = -1.53, 95% CI: 0.12-0.40). For Aim 2, D2 resulted in a lower hazard rate than non-D2 (unadjusted HR = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.09-0.32; adjusted HR = 0.16, 95% CI: 0.08-0.31). Adjusting all variables in Aim 2, including D2, D1 resulted in a statistically insignificant lower HR of 0.88 (p = 0.544, 95% CI: 0.57-1.34). There was no significant interaction between D1and D2 or between D1 and any other contraceptive type. LARC showed a highly protective but not statistically significant effect against RRP (adjusted HR = 0.05, p = 0.093, 95% CI: 0.002-2.26), but that protective effect decreased multiplicatively by about .25 with each passing month (HR = 1.25, p = 0.029, 95% CI: 1.02-1.53). DISCUSSION: These findings indicate that the Depo injection, although important to receive at discharge, must be continued consistently to have a significant protective effect in preventing a RRP. ▼ With the increasing demand of energy for our daily needs, much attention has been directed over the past few decades towards exploring alternative sources of energy such as Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Bioenergy, to extract the needed additional energy. Though we have developed different methods to extract energy, we are still in pursuit for a low-cost renewable energy source, and a method that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Water currents seem to represent a very efficient source. As water covers three quarters of the earth’s surface, and is constantly moving because of the Earth’s natural gravitational force and Tidal forces, we could develop a technology to generate energy using water currents. Also, ocean water is an inexhaustible resource. With the help of marine tidal turbines (Hydrokinetic turbines), we can convert water currents to usable power. So, for the past decade, researchers have been investigating Tidal turbine farms to generate large amounts of energy.To maximize the combined total power output in a Tidal turbine farm, the two criteria that have been studied more often lately are the spacing between the turbines, and different arrangements of turbines in arrays that will generate the maximum energy by minimizing unfavorable wake interactions between the turbines. Other criteria that need to be taken into consideration are: cabling costs, maintenance costs, turbine material, effect on sea life, etc. The idea of building Tidal turbine farms will only be plausible, if the total power output of, for example, four turbines, combined, is greater or close to the total power output of four individual turbines, while maintaining the efficiency in a favorable range. Also, an excessive amount of turbulent flow flowing towards a rotor will decrease the life span of the blades and the total power output, if the turbines are placed too close to each other in a row in the streamwise direction. On the other hand, Macleod et al. (2002) found that increasing the streamwise distance between turbines in a row beyond 5D (D = Diameter of the rotor) apart will only increase the cabling cost, but will not improve the total energy output.In the current research, the rotor has been replaced by an actuator disc. This concept has been used here because it can accurately compute turbulence intensity and wake decay, greatly simplifies analysis, and has been widely used to predict the performance of the tidal turbine [Rahman et al. (2018)].The present research will numerically analyze different turbine-placement configurations by varying the number of turbines and using different spacings (longitudinally and laterally) between the turbines, to understand the effects on the total power output under steady flow conditions. This study will use steady flow assumption, because the goal is to compare power outputs, and unsteady simulations would take far more CPU times. ▼ Intensive management of young-growth Douglas-fir plantations has emphasized volume growth over wood quality. A better understanding of the variables that affect wood quality is needed so that wood quality and stand yield can be systematically combined into a silviculture program. This experiment utilized two separate experiments to establish the relationship bebtwen wood quality, stand density, and artificial pruning. The influence of initial stand density on branch diameter, wood density, and tracheid length was explored utilizing 56 trees, 19 and 21 years old, at two sites in central western Oregon. Trees were sampled from Nelder plots ranging in density from 309 trees/ha to 18,730 trees/ha. The effects of fixed-height pruning on wood density and tracheid length were investigated using trees 23, 26, and 28 years old, after ten years of growth following pruning. Mean branch diameter, maximum branch diameter, number of branches/m, longevity of radial branch growth, and longevity of terminal branch growth all increased with decreasing initial tree density. After accounting for initial tree density, 1:2 rectangularity of spacing did not affect indicators of wood quality relative to 1:1 rectangularity of spacing. When age was held constant, there was no evidence that either wood density or tracheid length at breast height varied with initial tree density or crown characteristics. In contrast, there was evidence that ring density, earlywood density, and percent latewood increased linearly with initial tree density at the 5.27 m sampling height. There was no significant change in growth rate or wood density at breast height (1.37 m) or 5.27 m as a result of pruning 15% or less of the live crown length. In contrast, pruning to 5.5 m at age 13 resulted in a one-year decrease in earlywood width and an increase in percent latewood at 1.37 m. At the 5.27 m sampling height, there was a temporary increase in earlywood density, percent latewood, and mean ring density. Pruning at age 13 to 3.4 m and 5.5 m resulted in an increase in mean, earlywood, and latewood tracheid length of approximately 6% for three years. Wide initial spacing, combined with pruning appears to be the best choice for improving wood quality of Douglas-fir. Even though juvenile wood volume will be greater due to wide spacing, the increase in log diameter and clear wood volume will enhance log grade, especially if pruning occurs early in the rotation and is combined with commercial thinning to promote diameter growth. Com objetivo de estudar os efeitos da variaÃÃo do espaÃamento entre linhas e da populaÃÃo de plantas, nos componentes de produÃÃo do girassol, hÃbrido MG02, cultivado nos meses de fevereiro e marÃo, perÃodo conhecido como safrinha, na regiÃo Oeste de ParanÃ, conduziu-se um experimento no Campo Experimental da C.Vale - Cooperativa Agroindustrial, em Palotina â PR. Avaliou-se o hÃbrido MG2, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas, utilizando quatro espaÃamentos (E1 = 0,90 m, E2 = 0,75 m, E3 = 0,60 m e E4 = 0,45 m) e quatro populaÃÃes (P1 = 27.000, P2 = 35.000, P3 = 43.000 e P4 = 51.000 plantas ha-1) com quatro repetiÃÃes. Avaliou-se: altura de plantas (AP), diÃmetro de caule (DC), massa seca de folhas (MFS), massa seca de pecÃolo + caule (MSPC), massa seca de capÃtulo (MSCAP), Ãrea foliar (AF), diÃmetro de capÃtulo (DCAP), massa de grÃos por capÃtulo (MGCAP), grau de enchimento do capÃtulo (GECPA), massa de mil grÃos (MMG), produtividade (PROD), teor de Ãleo (TO) e produÃÃo de Ãleo (PO). Houve interaÃÃo entre espaÃamento e populaÃÃo na variÃvel AP. Para as variÃveis, MSF; MSCP; MSCAP; MGCAP; AF e TO, nÃo foi observada diferenÃa significativa em funÃÃo da variaÃÃo da populaÃÃo de plantas de girassol. In order to study the effects of changes in the spacing between row and the plant population in the agronomic performance of sunflowers, grown in second season in the western region of ParanÃ, led to an experiment in the field of Experimental C. Vale - Cooperative Agroindustrial in Palotina - PR. Was evaluated, the hybrid MG2 in design of blocks at random with split plots, using four spacings (E1 = 0.90 m, E2 = 0.75 m, E3 = 0.60 m and E4 = 0.45 m) and four population (P1 = 27,000, P2 = 35,000, P3 = 43,000 and P4 = 51,000 plants ha-1) with four replications. It was evaluated: plants height (AP) stem diameter (DC), leaves dry mass (MFS), dry mass stem + petiole (MSPC), dry mass chapter (MSCAP), leaf area (AF), chapter diameter (DCAP), grains mass per chapter (MGCAP), degree of filling of the chapter (GECPA), mass of a thousand grains (MMG), productivity (PROD), content of oil (TO) and production of oil (DB). There was only interaction between people in the variable spacing and AP.
