▼ This thesis examines the complex ways in which notions of the public interest and commercial imperatives intertwine in journalism practice. It does this through a study of the 2004 takeover and relaunch of the Sowetan newspaper, the highest circulation daily in South Africa throughout the 1990s and an institution of black public life. The ‘public interest’ and ‘the commercial’ are recurring ideas in journalism scholarship and practice, and the relaunch appeared to be a challenge to reconcile the Sowetan’s commercial challenges with its historical responsibility to a ‘nation-building’ public. However, the research shows that the public/commercial aspects of journalism were inextricably entangled with Sowetan’s organisational culture, which was the matrix through which its journalism practice was expressed. Conflict in the organisation over the changes was not simply a contest between commercial realities and the public interest, with journalists defending a responsibility to the public and managers pushing commercial solutions, but a conflict between the culture of Sowetan “insiders”, steeped in the legacy of the newspaper, and “outsiders”, employed by the new owners to effect change. Another conclusion of the research is that commercial “realities” – often conceptualised as counter to the public interest – are highly mutable. Basic conditions, such as a dependence on advertising, exist. However, media managers must choose from a range of strategies to be commercially viable, which requires risk-taking, innovation and, often, guesswork. In such situations, the ‘wall’ between media managers and senior editors is porous, as all executives must manage the relationship between business and editorial imperatives. Executives tend to overlook culture as a factor in changing organisations, but I argue that journalism could benefit from engaging with management theory and organisational psychology, which offer ways to understand the specific dynamics of the organisation. Finally, I argue that the case of the Sowetan throws into question the idea that there may be a broadly universal journalism culture. The attachment of Sowetan journalists to their particular values and practice suggests that forms of journalism evolve in certain contexts to diverge from the ‘professional’ Anglo-American modes. These ‘journalisms’ use similar terms – such as the ‘public interest’ – but operationalise them quite differently. The responsibility to the public is imagined in very different ways, but remains a significant attachment for journalists.

ENGLISH SUMMARY : The implementation of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in the tourism sector is an opportunity to transform the local economies due to the political heritage prevailing in South African townships, particularly Soweto. Soweto was home for the well-known Nobel Prize winners i.e. the late Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu during the struggle against apartheid. These icons together with Hector Pieterson who was shot during the Soweto uprising in 1976, have made Soweto one of the most popular tourist attraction places. It is for that reason that the implementation of, which is meant to address and redress the imbalances of the past, is an opportunity to transform the local economies. Data analysis of plans and reports from Government, other authors and proponents of BEE implementation was key to determine whether local economic transformation exists in the Soweto tourism sector. The scrutiny of tourism legislation were a point of departure, to make reference to BEE implementation evaluation. The case of Vilakazi Street BEE evaluation validated the findings from data analysis that not much was done in Orlando West, as compared to what had been planned. This implied that the objectives to transform the tourism industries through BEE implementation were not effectively met in Orlando West. To transform the tourism industries in Orlando West, 5 BEE recommendations were made, namely the establishment of the SMME support office; road shows to mediate BEE; revival of a Soweto Empowerment Zone, Monitoring and Evaluation of programmes implemented; and tourism sector empowerment and collaboration.

The changing structures of family and the increase in number of orphans are progressively becoming noticeable both nationally and internationally. A growing number of South African children are left without parents who can provide them with basic needs and emotional care and support. The influence of the HIV/AIDS pandemic has had a detrimental effect on the lives of children and adolescents who have lost one or both parents because of it. Orphans living in child-headed households within underprivileged communities are amongst the most vulnerable children and there is a need to stimulate broad-based discussion, and heighten awareness of and sensitivity to their plight, special needs and rights. This study aims to explore and describe the lived psycho-educational experiences of Grade 7 child-headed orphans in a primary school in Soweto and the support programmes available. It also aims to stimulate interest amongst other role players within government, agencies and communities to assist in addressing the situation of these learners through effective intervention strategies. The researcher has made use of a qualitative, phenomenological case study research design. Data was gathered through individual interviews, focus group interviews and the written life essays/stories, analysed according to Tesch’s method of open coding. The findings of this research revealed that the Grade 7 child-headed orphans’ psychological experiences included anger, sadness, lack of trust and need for love, while their educational experiences included performance in class and transition to high school. They also indicated how they experienced support by School Based Support Team (SBST), teachers, peers, community and Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs). The results of the study led to the formulation of recommendations which are intended to heighten awareness via the Department of Education (DoE) and stimulate interest amongst role players, such as school counsellors, educational psychologists and social workers, who are assisting these vulnerable children.

This study focuses on problems of adjustment which black pupils in Soweto (may) experience in the transition from primary to secondary school as far as mathematics is concerned. This problem is not investigated in vacuo, but is located within a definite context. This context consists of children of a distinct population group, who have reached a distinct level of development; who come from a distinct home background and who are taught a distinct subject by a distinct teacher in the service of a distinct education authority with a distinct teaching policy. As background to the problem a contextual and research literature survey is directed towards an empirical investigation. After the literature survey an empirical study focusing on standard 6 pupils was made. In this empirical investigation, various research methods were used in order to illuminate the purpose and hypothesis of this investigation. * Emphases is placed on determining the standard of mathematics amongst black pupils in the standard 6 experimental group by using a three-pronged approach: 1) The standard 6 pubils completed the HSRC diagnostic mathematics test for standard 5 and 6 in order to determine their competence in the basic functions of addition, subtraction, mUltiplication and division. 2) In order to determine the mathematical proficiency of standard 6 pupils the TOAM computer system was used. 3) To determine any possible deterioration in mathematical competency in standard 6 pupils in their transition from primary to secondary school, the same mathematics examination written at the end of standard 5, was written after three months in standard 6. * In order to attempt to determine the factors influencing the problems experienced by black pupils compelled to move from standard 5 to standard 6, a questionnaire probing socio-economic and general school situation was completed by all standard 6 pupils in the eight secondary schools used from this investigation. Questionnaires completed by teachers responsible for standard 6 mathematics teaching in the secondary schools were used to determine opinions concerning both the-standard of mathematics amongst standard 6 pupils and the problem of adjustment to the secondary School.

The picturesque landscape of South Africa is woven by the rich threads of diverse languages, cultures and beliefs. Despite the inherent differences of the different groups in this country, a common golden thread lies in the imparting of knowledge, values and beliefs from one generation to the next. This is often done formally, in the school environment, where children learn, develop and grow. The potential of children should be harnessed in an environment that is conducive to maximising the strengths and minimising their weaknesses. One domain is in the psychological testing arena where children’s cognitive abilities are assessed. The Junior South African Individual Scale (JSAIS) as an assessment measure is currently being used by psychologists despite the last norming having taken place in 1984 and the norms not being representative of the South African population. In an endeavour to transition from the past monolingual and monocultural practices, the JSAIS has been translated into isiZulu to eliminate any possible language barriers to participants. However, it is evident that translating tests is a risky procedure and every effort should be made to adhere to criteria proposed by the International Test Commission (ITC) to minimise cultural bias. One such way, is to thoroughly investigate the psychometric qualities of translated tests. The participants of the research are children in the Grade 1 isiZulu class at school in Soweto where research is being conducted. This longitudinal research project is a collaborative effort between the University of Basel, Switzerland and the Centre for Education Practice Research (CEPR) at the University of Johannesburg. The aim of this study was to apply a Rasch Analysis to the Numerical Intelligence Quotient Eight (NUM Scale) of an isiZulu translation of the Junior South African Individual Scales (JSAIS) to determine the quality of the items in relation to the ability of participants in the sample group. As an exploratory, quantitative study, the findings suggest that the JSAIS has some strong psychometric properties and that adaptation, translation and renorming of the test should be conducted in future studies. The findings of this study show that the data generated varied in its fit of the Rasch Model. While findings confirm that the numerical subtests of the Number and Quantity are valid measures of the construct for which it was designed, it is recommended that further studies be conducted into the equivalence of the isiZulu translated JSAIS, the further testing of larger samples of participants and the reduction of cultural loading on items. The information gleaned from this study regarding the misfitting of items, item difficulty and overlapping should also be considered to enhance the quality of this test and thereby maintaining the tenets of our new, modern democracy in South Africa.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The highest number of HIV and AIDS cases is recorded in Southern Africa and more specifically in the republic of South Africa. Likewise the highest levels of poverty are recorded in South Africa among the majority of historically disadvantaged black people. These people have a poor culture of saving and in the face of a new epidemic of HIV and AIDS, the situation is becoming worse. This research report assessed the impact of HIV and AIDS on low-income earners and their propensity to save by analysing the incomes of a sample of 120 men and women between 18 and 55 years of age, who were HIV-positive and earned not more than R 3000 per month. This was a retrospective descriptive review of the routinely collected clinical records of the clients falling in the category mentioned above, who were receiving antiretroviral drugs over a period of 4 years. In-depth interviews were conducted on respondents to determine what their savings were before contracting the disease and during the period they were sick. This method was conducive because of the sensitivity of the subject matter. Having analysed the data collected, the impact of HIV and AIDS on the saving capacity of low income earners was assessed. Results indicated that low income earners’ propensity to save is affected because they have to spend much of their income on medication, transport costs to clinics and hospitals for regular check-ups and possible admissions. HIV-positive low income earners consequently suffer AIDS related financial hardships as they are left with very little or none at all to save.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die hoogtste MIV en Vigs gevalle is in Suidelike-Afrika en meer spesifiek in die Republiek van Suid-Afrika. Eweneens kom die hoogste vlakke van armoede in Suid- Afrika onder die histories minder bevoorregte swart bevolking voor. Hierdie mense het 'n swak kultuur van geld spaar en weens die epidemie van MIV en Vigs, vererger hierdie situasie. Hierdie navorsingsverslag het die impak bereken van MIV en Vigs op persone met lae inkomste en hul geneigdheid om te spaar deur die inkomstes van 'n steekproef van 120 mans en vroue tussen die ouderdom van 18 en 55 jaar, wie MIV-positief is en wie nie meer as R 3000 per maand verdien nie. Dit was 'n retrospektiewe beskrywing van kliniese optekenings van bogenoemde kliënte wat volgens roetine versamel is, en wie antiretrovirale medisyne oor 'n periode van 4 jaar ontvang het. Diepte onderhoude is met respondente gevoer om vas te stel wat hul spaarpeil was voor hulle die siekte opgedoen het en gedurende die periode wat hulle siek was. Hierdie metode is bevorderlik weens die sensitiwiteit van die kwessie. Na analise van die data, is die impak van MIV en Vigs op spaar-kapasitiet van persone wat min verdien beraam. Resultate wys dat die neiging tot spaar van persone wat min verdien geaffekteer is omdat hulle so veel van hul inkomste moet spandeer…

Mental health is known to be adversely affected by gender inequality and poverty. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that psychological disorders affect half the global population (WHO, 2010) and South African estimates posited that 16.5% of the population presented with common mental disorders in 2007 (Williams et al., 2008). Depression and anxiety disorders in women, specifically, are posing a major public health concern in developing countries due to inadequate treatment (Aidoo & Harpham, 2001). Protective factors, namely intrapersonal, interpersonal, community and cultural factors, were identified by Ungar (2008) as a mechanism that promotes resilience and alleviates the effects of adversity. In order to develop knowledge geared toward intervention strategies to promote mental health in socio-economically disadvantaged women in urban communities, this study employed an explanatory mixed methods research design (which included both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews) to establish an incidence of depressive symptoms, and levels of ego-resilience, among women in Doornkop, Soweto. This was done in order to explore, first, the relationships between selected socio-demographic variables and depression and ego-resilience, and second, to investigate if there was a relationship between depression and ego-resilience. Finally, the study aimed to gain an understanding of how women perceived the role of protective resources in their lives which might promote positive mental health outcomes. The statistical component of the study found a weak negative correlation between the two constructs of depression and ego-resilience. Symptoms of depression appeared to be related by exposure to a high number of difficult life experiences, and particularly in instances of having been a victim of crime or violence. While ego-resilience seemed to be related to increased participation in community groups, it also correlated with adversity, namely, unemployment. This led the researcher to the conclusion that for this sample, depression and ego-resilience were independent constructs, and although they were divergent concepts, both were shaped by exposure to adversity. The interview data further explored exogenous sources of resilience as set out by Ungar (2008). These findings highlighted the importance of interpersonal relations on feelings of well-being. While the protective factors varied in the sources from which they arose (from children, romantic partners, parents, peers and community groups to music and television, and faith in God), they all provided a sense of purpose, belonging and self -worth, which enabled positive feelings. The main recommendation that arose from the research was the need for community education about mental illness, the services available to communities, and the importance of developing and maintaining family and community systems of support. These measures may go some way toward enhancing resilience in women and reducing vulnerability to mental disorders…

It is evident that the current political changes presently taking place in South Africa need to be accompanied by a dramatic transformation to accommodate the economic, social, technological and health changes amongst others. The nursing discipline is no exception. For a change to be felt by nursing staff and by health consumers, effective management strategies need to be developed to accommodate transformation guidelines as outlined by the Reconstruction and Development Programme, the National Health Plan and the Constitution which all emphasize the right to health, hence this study. This study focuses on a primary health care clinics. This is a qualitative, contextual, exploratory and descriptive study with the overall aim of exploring and describing a nursing service strategy for change in Soweto Primary Health clinics where the researcher is employed. To accomplish this aim, the following objectives were formulated: to explore and describe the expectations of the managers and the functional nurses concerning the required nursing service strategy for change within Soweto Primary Health Clinics; to explore and describe the expectations of health consumers concerning the required nursing service strategy for change in Soweto Primary Health Clinics; to describe the required nursing service strategy for Soweto Primary Health Clinics. Through purposive sampling, three focus groups were selected from the role players within Soweto who represent the nursing managers, the functional nurses' and the health consumers in order to infer the required change strategy for the nursing service. i. Data was collected through these focus groups interviews using semi-structured questions. Data management and data analysis was done using the methods of content analysis according to Kerlinger (1986: 480). An research expert, was utilised as a reliability measure to identify and categorise themes separately from the researcher. The categories that emerged were subsequently refined through consensus discussions between the researcher and the independent researcher. Woods and Catanzaro' s measures (1988: 136) to ensure validity and reliability were applied in this study.

Background: Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) is a primary myocardial disease of unknown cause characterized by left ventricular or biventricular dilatation and impaired myocardial contractility. Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) is the second commonest cause of heart failure in Africa. Some patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy present with significant pulmonary hypertension (PHT) which maybe out of keeping with the usual degree of PHT seen in patients with this disorder. Methods and Material: This is a prospective and longitudinal follow-up study of 66 patients with IDC who were evaluated after satisfying the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this study. The clinical evaluation of each patient included a complete medical history, physical examination, 12 lead electrocardiogram, 2D-echocardiography, continuous wave (CW), pulsed wave (PW), and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). Results: The mean age of all patients was 48.5 ± 12.8, with 39/66 (59.1%) patients being male. The prevalence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) was documented in 47 patients (71.2%, 95% CI: 59 - 83%). Mean left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was 25.3 ± 8.8%, and mean left atrial volume index (LA volume) was 44.5±19.8 ml/m2. Mitral regurgitation (MR) occurred in 56/66 (84.8%) of patients with moderate or severe MR detected in 60.6% of all cases of IDC. The presence of a tricuspid regurgitant jet was found in 56/66 (84.9%), with (95% CI: 75 -93%). Right ventricular dilatation was found in 65/66 (98.5%), with (95% CI: 95 - 101%). ii Age, LA volume, LVEF and MR were included into a multivariate logistic regression model to predict PAH. Only MR presence was independently associated with PAH adjusted (OR 6.02, 95% CI: 1.15- 31.47) (p= 0.03). Conclusion: The study has shown that there is a significant prevalence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), right heart involvement and tricuspid regurgitant jet in IDC patients. The present study also showed that in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, the degree of mitral regurgitation was a good predictor of PAH.

M.A. (Public Management and Governance)

This study focused on perceptions of the role of teacher unions within the basic education system in secondary schools in Soweto, a township in the south of Johannesburg, South Africa. The main aim of the study was to determine whether the role that teacher unions play contributes negatively to the state of education in secondary schools in Soweto. To make this determination, the study focused on two secondary schools in Soweto. The study discussed the key purpose of teacher unions in education, and provides the legislated guidelines as well as perceptions of stakeholders in education in secondary schools in Soweto with regard to the extent of the influence of South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in two secondary schools in Soweto. As the biggest teacher union in the country with a large following of educators in secondary schools in Soweto, SADTU has significant power which can be directed to either enhance teaching and learning or inhibit teaching and learning in secondary schools in Soweto. If existing accountability processes are not implemented to ensure that teacher unions carry out their mandate in compliance with legislation, the state of education in secondary schools in Soweto may be at risk. The study utilized a qualitative research design, to analyze data gathered from existing literary knowledge on the subject, while qualitative interviews were conducted with respondents to establish their perceptions on the positive or negative contributions of SADTU in secondary schools in Soweto. The findings were that SADTU is perceived to be inhibiting the culture of teaching and learning in some secondary schools in Soweto. However, the study established that SADTU cannot be isolated as the only cause for a poor culture of teaching and learning in secondary schools in Soweto. The cumulative effect of the curriculum changes; lack of training of educators; pressure placed on the teaching and learning through strikes and dissent; and intimidation of some SADTU members are factors that have contributed negatively to the culture of teaching and learning in secondary schools in Soweto.
