▼ Asia and
South America possess the two iconic orogenic belts - Himalayas and Andes and two largest and highest plateaus - Tibetan Plateau and Puna Plateau on the earth. Their lithospheres were formed under continental-continental collision and ocean-continent subduction regimes respectively. Seismic images of their current lithospheric structure provide key insights into the current stage in their evolutionary process. Lithospheric structure beneath the Tibetan Plateau has been studied using deep seismic reflection profiling since the beginning of the INDEPTH project in 1992. This international effort led by consortium of Chinese and western academic institutions, continued over 25 years in four different phases. Key features spanned by this megatransect include the Main Himalaya Thrust (MHT) at the southern margin of the plateau, crustal seismic bright spots in the
south and central part of the plateau, Moho topography across the plateau and especially an abrupt step in the Moho beneath the northeastern margin of the Plateau beneath the Qaidam Basin. A recent reflection profile by the SINOPROBE Project across the Sichuan Basin located at the southeast edge of the Tibetan Plateau, reveals sub-crustal dipping reflectors which are very likely to result from Neo-Proterozoic subduction beneath the Sichuan Basin. The preservation of these features supports the interpretation that the Sichuan Basin represents at buttress against eastward deformation and crustal thickening of the Tibetan Plateau. Lithospheric structure beneath the Andean orogenic belt is here 1 studied with a novel seismic reflection technique, one which uses earthquakes below 100 km depth as sources to illuminate the overlying lithospheric structure. The application of this technique is based upon exploitation of USArray, a large scale, high density passive seismic array that has been moving across the continental US since 2003. Analysis of 124 earthquakes that occurred between 2003 to 2012 provides a) new estimates of crustal thickness in areas previously imaged by conventional techniques; b) the first estimates of Moho depth in areas inaccessible to conventional geophysical surveys, c) mapped regions with nonreflective Mohos and d) identified prominent crustal seismic reflectors that may mark magma chambers, large scale decollements, or intracrustal phase changes in various parts of the Andean system. Each of these new observations constitute significant new constraints for geodynamic models of the Andean tectonics. 2

▼ The Amazon, as the world's largest rainforest region, is important for global carbon cycle, climate change, and ecosystem. This dissertation aims to investigate rainfall variability and the related atmospheric and land processes in tropical
South America using both observations and climate models. The first two studies concern the changes and variability of the dry season over the southern Amazon, a domain with vulnerable tropical rainforest. Ground-based observation from 1979 to 2011 indicates the dry season length (DSL) has increased at a rate of 6.5 ± 2.5 days per decade, mainly caused by a delay of the dry season ending (DSE). A delay of the DSE has a clear impact on fire counts in austral spring. Moreover, the DSE also has large interannual variation and thus has a strong impact on drought and flood. Three dry season conditions are crucial for determining its trend and interannual variation. (i) A poleward shift of the subtropical jet over
South America (SJ[subscript SA]) can prevent cold frontal systems from moving northward into the Amazon. This delays cold air incursion and results in late DSE over. (ii) An anomalous anticyclonic center, which enhances westerly wind at 850 hPa (U850) and the
South American Low Level Jets (SALLJs), leads to moisture export from the southern Amazon to La Plata basin and reduces convective systems that provide elevated diabatic heating. (iii) Smaller convective available potential energy (CAPE) and larger convective inhibition energy (CIN) limit local thermodynamically driven convection. However, global climate models can capture neither the drying trend nor the variability of the DSL and DSE. Thus, the third and fourth studies deal with understanding the reported systematic dry bias over the Amazon in climate models. Our evaluation of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) models indicates the positive feedback between reduced cloudiness, too much surface solar radiation, high Bowen ratio, and suppression of rainfall appears to cause the dry bias. A further investigation on Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) models demonstrates the Amazon dry season dry bias origins from biases in complicated processes, highlights the importance of the northern Andes on moisture flux convergence over the Amazon in the dry season, and suggests using at least 1° atmosphere-only model to understand the remaining dry season dry bias. The fifth study proposed a new method to assess CMIP5 climate projections for rainfall extremes. The results indicate future heavy rainfall changes in the Amazon due to anthropogenic forcing may be underestimated by multi-model ensemble mean.

▼ South American camelids were domesticated approximately 6000 to 7000 years ago for their meat, coats and usage as beasts of burden. There are two genera of
South American camelids, Lama and Vicugna, each with an extant wild and domesticated species. This thesis looks at assorted collections from Northern Chile in an attempt to find differences in skeletal morphology that will be able to identify a domesticated camelid from a wild one. This was accomplished by performing a series of measurements on collections from the Museo Arqueológico de La Serena in La Serena, Chile. Statistical analysis was performed to see if there is a difference in the bone sizes between the time periods represented in the collections and to determine if it is significant. While a statistical significance was found for some measurements, the hypothesis that a morphological difference would be present to identify domesticates was unable to be supported because species of the same genera in this area of Chile are too similar in overall size.

▼ The Mio-Pliocene geologic record is investigated along the southeastern margin of the Puna plateau in northwestern Argentina. The Puna plateau is the southernmost extension of the high elevation, internally drained, Central Andean plateau. A series of intermontane basins at the plateau margin preserve thick stratigraphic sections spanning ~10–3 Ma. The strata in these basins were investigated between 25°30?S and 28°S latitude, with geochronological and paleoenvironmental objectives. The stratigraphy, composition, and age of volcanic ash beds provide age control. Fossil vertebrates and soils interbedded with these volcanic ash beds provide material for stable isotopic proxies of environment. This approach permits analysis of spatial and temporal patterns in the tectonic and climatic evolution of the landscape at the Puna margin. Stable isotope analysis of fossil tooth enamel from the 2.5 km thick section at Puerta de Corral Quemado documents the late Miocene expansion of plants using the C4 photosynthetic pathway. Tooth enamel was analyzed by conventional methods, and by laser ablation which incorporates small bodied taxa in the study. These results indicate the presence of C4 plants in the region by at least 8.5 Ma and a shift to C4 diets among fossil notoungulates between 7–5.5 Ma. Fossil rodents exhibit a less dramatic diet change across this interval, and all taxa document transient enrichment in 13C and 18O approximately coincident with the Miocene-Pliocene boundary. Interbasin correlation of ash beds demonstrate that conglomeratic deposits are conformable with stratified sections and initiated between 4–3 Ma. These deposits lag uplift of basin margin mountain blocks by several million years and precede contractional deformation of Mio-Pliocene strata. This sequence is characteristic, but diachronous between basins. This Mio-Pliocene pulse of deformation typifies the evolution of a broken foreland at the plateau margin. Interbasin comparison of isotopic proxy data from fossil soils identifies regional 18O enrichment concurrent with topographic growth at the plateau margin. Carbon isotope data from fossil soils demonstrate strong ecological gradients at the landscape-scale and at local scales. The record of C4 expansion in fossil soils is significantly influenced by the growth of complex topography and possibly by regional reorganization of precipitation systems.

▼ This dissertation looks at the energy security situation in
South America and tries to evaluate why, even though the region possesses important resources, it finds itself today in a rather precarious situation regarding the future. Energy security is approached from a geopolitical perspective, and uses the literature to identify regional energy integration and the development of renewable energy within the energy matrix as two sine qua non conditions to the construction of energy security in the
South American Region.
On the continent though the benefits of energy integration are very present in the political discourse, in practice, the countries remain focused on short-term national gains. In the same way even though a number of programs have been created to increase their development, renewable energies have not yielded the expected results, and the matrix remains poorly diversified.
A gap is identified in the explanation of these shortcomings. If the literature looks at the technical failure to progress on those issues, it fails to use the political theory to explain why. Yet energy issues are regarded as extremely politicised. Grounded theory strategy is therefore used to build a theory on how these elements can be explained structurally.
First, at the regional level findings show that if institutions have been created, they lack autonomy and coherence: making them an unreliable tool to concretely plan and drive integration. The inter-governmental structure is found unable to advance common interests and its consequent instability unable to secure investment.
This then leads to the discussion of the national level. The question is posed of the inter-connexions between the two. The regional structure effectively suggests that its deficiencies are not only causing shortfalls at the national level, but also that the national scale could be conditioning much of this structure. Argentina was used as a case study to evaluate this relationship. It discusses the possibility that the recent democratic construction of the nations could explain the failure to promote integration. Furthermore the national institutional instability linked to that characteristic better explains the composition of the energy matrix.
The lack of long-term planning on the continent, linked to its developing nations identity is found as one of the main geopolitical causes of the energy security situation today. Nonetheless this dissertation also concludes that a vision is increasingly being developed and could lead a sustained progress.

▼ This dissertation examines the formation of
South Asian
America over the last fifteen years as a coalitional identity intended to circumvent divisions both subcontinental (e.g. religious, national, linguistic, colorist, caste-based) and domestic (e.g. racial, class-based). While the fruits of this mobilization are beginning to be seen in mainstream U.S. media, the backbone of this nascent movement is a community that gathered, organized, and communicated with itself using a variety of digital media sites and practices over the last decade and a half.
South Asian Americans are positioned at a pivot point between, on the one hand, transnational and national ethnocentrisms, and, on the other, similarly multi-scalar visions of the miraculous, increasing flow of technologies and capital. The media producers and curators of coalitional

South Asian
America, taken together, place themselves at a crux in multiple scales of racialized, capitalist empire to critique it and produce solidarities with marginalized communities within and without.
This dissertation is an examination of the abundance of unremarked yet remarkable labor that undergirds this formation, from repetitive production of blog posts, digital archive entries, and podcasts, to responding to hundreds of comments, to elaborate infrastructures and acts of affirming, listening, reading, and sharing. This dissertation reveals how, to build
South Asian
America, complex forms of identity and diasporic belonging are managed and imagined through iterative, mundane, and loving acts of mediated labor. This dissertation reframes the meaning of connectivity—as a cultural practice and process as well as a technical phenomenon—and the labor that goes into its production and management. Re-conceptualizing connectivity allows us grounded purchase to explore the affective drive for diasporic connection that has inspired this unceasing and underappreciated labor. This new conceptualization of connectivity as both cultural and technical encourages us to consider how community connections, solidarities, and coalitions are built from a wealth of mundane interactions with people and media. To that end, this dissertation uses a multimodal approach in terms of methods, theoretical grounding, and phenomena of study, with particular focus on three multi-person digital media projects: blog and forum Sepia Mutiny (2004-2012), the

▼ Already one of the most impoverished countries in the world, Guyana’s economy is experiencing a downward spiral under IMF and World Bank structural adjustment programs (SAPs), which ironically, were designed to boost the economy. This claim is analyzed with respect to three of Guyana’s most important industries: logging, mining and sugar. However, while SAPs have been a major force in influencing Guyana’s recent development path, the nation’s colonial inheritance must also be considered. Specifically, this legacy set the conditions under which Guyana’s two major political parties, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), both claiming to be adherents to socialism, came to power. Their policies and actions, influenced by the colonial inheritance, eventually led to Guyana’s adoption of austerity measures designed by the international financial institutions (IFIs). This analysis therefore begins with an examination of the rise of these two dominant political parties, the role of colonialism in their emergence and the impact their actions and policies have had in laying the foundations for SAPs. It then turns to examining specifically the effects of SAPs on three major areas of the economy, logging, mining and sugar. This study is significant because it draws attention to the problems associated with SAPs. While structural adjustment has become a widely accepted form of financial assistance over the past two decades, upon closer examination, its negative effects far outweigh the positive ones. Therefore, SAPs should be better tailored to the specifics of Guyana’s economy.

▼ The Middle Horizon (A.D. 600 - 1000) marked a distinct shift in the sociopolitical landscape of the Andes with the development of the expansive polity known as the Wari. The Moquegua Valley of southern Peru is believed to be the southern-most extent of the Wari polity and our knowledge of their expansion into the valley relies primarily on ceramics, textiles, food remains, and architectural features; there are very few published studies on Wari lithics for the Moquegua Valley. The aim of this study was to define the role of stone tools in Wari's periphery, specifically at the Wari sites of Cerro Baúl and Cerro Mejía, by examining variation in lithic retouch, tool manufacture, and procurement of geologic materials. The analysis of the assemblage suggested geologic material and tool form influenced the lithic activity of the household and that specific items were markers of status. Although lower-status households had limited access to resources and frequently resharpened tools to extend their use-life, at Cerro Baúl, households of elevated status retouched their tools more. Whereas, Cerro Mejía's assemblage contained high retouch regardless of material, form, or location, indicating differential access to resources between the two sites. This is reiterated in the procurement of resources, where distinct differences in geologic material were present at Cerro Mejía compared to Cerro Baúl, indicating not only variability in resource acquisition and use, but that the material at Cerro Mejía may have been acquired through embedded procurement and exchange. Retouch practices suggested bifacial point forms varied in function. Most bifacial points were not used as projectiles but as multifunctional cutting tools, whereas Tiwanaku-style points consistently had impact damage from use as projectiles. Furthermore, these Tiwanaku-style points contained high retouch with no presence of preforms or early stages of manufacture, suggesting offsite manufacturing and acquisition through trade with the Moquegua Valley Tiwanaku sites to the
south.

▼ Clothing labels are considered to be a source of information to consumers in a developing (Potchefstroom, in the North West Province of South Africa) and a developed country (Fayetteville, Arkansas, in the United States of America) context, which serve to promote the standard of consumer decisions by providing information on the intrinsic and extrinsic product properties and care instructions. Once consumers in these two contexts come in contact with clothing labels, the sensory information is registered into buffers that are located in their sensory memory store and the relocation of (clothing label) information to their long-term memories (knowledge) depends on their level of attention and information rehearsal. Although a number of studies have been conducted on clothing labels and the construct of knowledge separately, few studies were found to focus on consumers’ knowledge of clothing labels while none have compared the knowledge of consumers from different settings. The aim of this study was to compare the subjective and objective knowledge of the information on clothing labels of consumers in a developing (Potchefstroom, SA) and a developed (Fayetteville, USA) country context in order to determine the differences between these consumers’ knowledge of clothing labels. Furthermore, the objectives of this study were to determine the demographic profiles of respondents in a developing and a developed country context; the differences in the subjective knowledge of respondents on clothing labels; the differences in the objective knowledge of respondents with regard to the written and pictorial information on clothing labels; the association between respondents’ subjective and objective knowledge of the information on clothing labels and the differences in the subjective and objective knowledge of respondents from different demographic subgroups. The aim and objectives of this study were reached by employing a quantitative, comparative, descriptive approach. Furthermore, purposive sampling was used to recruit respondents in Potchefstroom and Fayetteville who met specific inclusion criteria. Respondents in this study had to be between the ages of 18 and 70 years, participate in clothing shopping, be able to read clothing labels and respondents and their spouses should not have worked in a clothing-related sector. Potential respondents in both cities were approached at predetermined public and private areas, such as universities, municipal offices, retirement facilities, parking areas and shopping centres which existed within both cities at the time. Data were collected simultaneously in Potchefstroom (N=445) and Fayetteville (N=336) by employing an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Male and female respondents and the Black/African and White/Caucasian population group in Potchefstroom were well distributed; however, female respondents were more and the White/Caucasian population group was the largest in Fayetteville. Furthermore, respondents of the different age groups were well
distributed in Potchefstroom…

▼ This thesis seeks to answer the question: how healthy, relatively speaking, are civil-military relations in
South America? To answer this, key variables from three of the touchstone works in civil-military literature, namely, Samuel Huntington’s “The Soldier and the State,” Morris Janowitz’s “The Professional Soldier: A Social and Political Portrait,” and Samuel Finer’s “The Man On Horseback.” and journal articles were gleaned.
A total of twenty-two variables were identified and divided into three categories: State Comparative, Civilian and Military variables that are connected to “healthy” civil-military relations in the literature. These variables were then applied to all twelve
South American states. The results were then compared to the United States, which the literature suggests is the closest to having “ideal” civil-military relations.
To ensure that the paper comparison matches practice, this thesis reviewed Colombia in-depth. Its military is not only the second largest in the region, but also one that plays a vital role in society.
The overall results from this comparative assessment indicate that there is a bimodal distribution among
South American states in terms of the variables indicating healthy civil-military relations. Although it is clear that all States still need major improvements, half have healthier civil-military relations than the other half.

▼ This thesis is a cultural history of Japanese immigration to Colombia throughout the twentieth century. It looks at the circumstances under which Japanese migration was envisioned by Colombia and Japan and has three basic aims: first, to identify the expectations of Colombia regarding foreign immigration, and of the Japanese government in promoting emigration abroad; second, to explain the process of adaptation by the immigrants to the new social and physical environment, so different from their country of origin; and third, to discuss the significance of the 'U-turn nikkei’ labour migration to Japan. In this work, the activities of the emigration company Kaigai Kôgyô Kabushiki Gaisha are examined. This company, in association with the Overseas Cooperative of Fukuoka Prefecture, planned and conducted rural immigration to Colombia. In addition to a summary of the immigration legislation, an overview of all immigration plans is presented. Because of the role immigration played in shaping the relations between the two countries, early diplomatic and economic relationships are also considered. Special attention is given to the protection of the Panama Canal zone by the United States, a fact that deterred Japanese immigration to Colombia. This thesis has involved the examination of a diverse range of sources, dispersed in several archives and libraries in Colombia, England, Japan, and the United States. Bibliographical research was combined with fieldwork, carried out among the Japanese immigrants and their descendants in Colombia as well as Japan. This work hopes to contribute to a better understanding of Japanese emigration abroad, adding a new perspective to the study of international immigration to Colombia.

▼ Over time, the predominant tendency of many governments' agencies has been to evaluate a programme or policy investing large amount of resources in supporting policy evaluation. However, recommendations suggested by policy evaluators are not always taken up. Moreover, there is relatively little evidence of the extent of policy evaluation effectiveness (i.e. the influence of evaluation on the programme evaluated) and the factors which have significant impact on it. This dissertation aims to shed light on this issue by focusing on the Mexican and Chilean experiences of policy evaluation in the health care sector. It provides a detailed analysis of the extent to which evaluations have led to changes in policies and programmes and reveals a rather limited effectiveness of policy evaluation in these countries. I argue that shortcomings in the effectiveness of policy evaluation can be explained by institutional and political factors, primarily the nature of Intra Governmental Relations (IGR), but also the quality of bureaucracy, the level of democracy, the autonomy of policy evaluators, and the type of policy evaluation framework. While all of these factors seem to have some influence, the relationship between the executive and legislature is clearly the key determinant of the take up of recommendations. Thus, the findings of this thesis suggest that strengthening coordination between the different parts of government is needed to enhance the effectiveness of policy evaluation. In addition, the analysis also suggests that policy evaluation is likely to be more effective when it incorporates budgetary incentives.

▼ Many HIV/AIDS public service announcements (PSAs) focus on aspects of HIV/AIDSprevention efforts, including stigma and discrimination. However, due to an absence ofmedia evaluations that have properly understood the ways in which HIV/AIDS-relatedstigma PSAs are framed and constructed, little is known about the ways in which thesemessages are framed. This study attempts to bridge the gap by analyzing the ways inwhich the Pan American Health 10-year Anthology DVD, frames and constructs theirargument in PSAs targeted at HIV/AIDS-related stigma. In order to answer thequestions, this study connects the theories of stigma, media, and framing, to the theory ofsocial construction. Where stigma is a form of social construction, framing can causesocial construction and media facilitates social construction. Moreover, this study uses aqualitative content analysis, to analyze the198 PSAs in the anthology. The results of thestudy revealed that HIV/AIDS-related stigma PSAs could be categorized into eitherproactive or reactive frames. Within the proactive and reactive frames there are alsoseveral sub-categories, which includes: proactive messages that reduce self-stigma,proactive messages that encourage community support, proactive messages thatencourage institutional support, and proactive messages that focus on antidiscrimination.Within the reactive messages the sub-categories include: reactivemessages and HIV/AIDS corrective information, reactive messages that focus on howHIV/AIDS is and is not transmitted, reactive messages that focus on what stigma is. Theanalysis of this study connected the theoretical reference to the results of the study, bydetermining that the proactive and reactive frames are tools within PSAs, intended tocreate a new reality or new social attitudes about HIV/AIDS-related stigma. Futureimplications for this study could evaluate the effects of the proactive and reactive frames.

▼ As subduction science advances, it is becoming increasingly clear that the conventional model of subduction driven by cold, strong, dense slabs sinking cohesively in the mantle is insufficient to explain observed heterogeneities across a range of scales. The breadth of observed features of subduction zones is expanding at the same time as along strike variability is revealed within individual subduction systems. Not surprisingly, the driving components of subduction zones, and by extension this variability, are the subducting slabs. Thus, in order to revisit the traditional model of subduction, this dissertation uses seismic imaging techniques in four distinct studies to characterize the structure and behavior of the subducting slabs across two extensive subduction systems:
South America and the Eastern Mediterranean. These two systems serve as the ideal test cases for characterizing variability within and across subduction zones because they represent end-member styles of subduction: Andean-type subduction and Mediterranean-type subduction, respectively.
The first study presents the results of a regional-scale teleseismic tomography inversion surrounding the Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina. This study targets the observable response of the slab-mantle interaction to subduction of the hot spot-generated Juan Fernández Ridge, identifying entrainment of hot subslab asthenosphere and induced tearing of the subducting Nazca slab. Through this study I also present a model for explaining the infrequent distribution of subslab slow seismic velocity anomalies in subduction systems globally. The second study presents the results of a continental-scale teleseismic tomography inversion across the Anatolian sub-continent in the Eastern Mediterranean. This study targets the response of the slab to the major tectonic transition seen in central Anatolia from ocean subduction in the west to continental collision in the east. The resulting seismic images show an increasingly deforming slab from west to east that illustrates the evolutionary process of subduction termination. The third study presents new software developed to automatically extract slab geometry from teleseismic tomography models. The efficacy of the software is presented through applications to the Juan de Fuca/Gorda and Nazca slabs, signifying its broad utility in interpreting tomographic images. The fourth study utilizes this new software along with a continental-scale teleseismic tomography model across
South America to present a detailed model of Nazca slab geometry from the surface into the lower mantle. The results of this study reveal that the slab penetrates the 660 km discontinuity uninhibited while instead interacting with a lower mantle discontinuity. This result has far reaching implications for geodynamic models of
South American evolution.
Together, these studies reveal a broad consistency across subduction zones – that slabs do not remain cohesive during their descent in the mantle. Instead, the presence of heterogeneities in the downgoing plate…

▼ This dissertation examines the changing concepts and experiences of slavery and freedom in
South Carolina from its founding in 1670 through 1747, a period during which the legal status of "slave" became solidified in law. During the course of
South Carolina's first eight decades of settlement, the legal statuses of "slave" and "free" evolved as the colony's slaveholders responded to both local and imperial contexts. Slaves and slaveholders engaged in a slow process of defining and refining the contours of both slavery and freedom in law. The dissertation explores how this evolution occurred by focusing on three topics: constant conflict that afflicted the colony, free white colonists' reliance on the loyalty of slaves, and
South Carolina's law and legal system. Through its use of social and legal history, as well as close reading, the dissertation shows that
South Carolina's legal and military contexts gave unplanned meaning to slaves' activities, and that this had the effect of permitting slaves to shape slavery and freedom's development in practice and in law. In various ways, the actions of slaves forced slaveholders to delineate what they considered appropriate life and work conditions, as well as forms of justice, for both slaves and free people. As such, slavery as an institution helped give form to freedom. Drawing on legal records, newspapers, pamphlets, and records of the colonial elite, the dissertation argues that slaves' actions – nonviolent as well as violent – served as a driving force behind the legal trajectory of slavery and freedom in
South Carolina. These processes and contexts change our understanding of colonial
America. They reveal that slaves influenced the legal regulation of slavery and that slavery and the enslaved population played a critical role in defining freedom, a central tenet of American democracy. Contrary to modern assumptions about freedom and even the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence, this dissertation shows how slavery actually constrained freedom.

▼ The goldenrod genus Solidago L. is one of the larger genera in the flowering plant family Asteraceae. The genus is primarily North American and was recently revised in Flora of North America. In contrast, Solidago in South America is not well understood and has been thought to be represented by one group in one subsection the S. chilensis complex with only two species. However, among specimens borrowed to analyze the Solidago chilensis complex were a small number of collections of two additional species, S. missouriensis Nutt. and S. virgaurea [synonym: S. patagonica], from two different subsections not previously reported from South America. Using multivariate morphometric analyses on a matrix of 50 traits of 160 specimens (stepwise discriminant, classificatory and canonical analyses), the distinctiveness of the Solidago chilensis complex was tested and found to be statistically different from three morphologically similar North America species. Using just the 104 specimens of the Solidago chilensis complex, the previously published classification dividing the complex into two species was tested and found to be supported statistically but with many misclassifications a posteriori. Alternative ways of dividing the complex into species and varieties were explored in order to create a statistically strongly supported revised classification of the Solidago chilensis complex with two species, S. chilensis and S. microglossa.

▼ Several lines of evidence suggest that all Native
American populations have an East Asian origin, yet the subsequent
processes causing diversification within the
South American
continent during the Holocene are not well understood. This
dissertation tests if, based on the analysis of dental morphology,
South American population samples exhibit higher between-group
diversity than East and Southeast Asian population samples.
Following the assessment of variation among
South American series,
dental frequencies were explored to examine the extent to which
South American series exhibit the Sinodont dental complex, a dental
complex that is expressed among east and north Asians. In addition,
this dissertation explores possible causes of the observed
diversity, investigating whether patterns of morphological affinity
among
South American population samples are affected by isolation
by distance, isolation by time, or both. The results of this
dissertation suggest higher between-group diversity among
South
American populations as compared to East and Southeast Asian
series. The morphological affinities and hierarchical cluster
analyses indicate differentiation between
South American
populations east and west of the Andes. Consistent with the high
level of interpopulation variation expressed among
South American
series, some
South American populations were found to exhibit trait
frequencies aligned with Sinodonty, while others were not. Still
other
South American series express trait frequencies that are
neither Sinodont nor Sundadont (dental complex expressed by
southeast Asians). Mantel correlation tests indicate that isolation
by time does not explain the differentiation between east and west
South American series. On the other hand, these correlation tests
suggest partial support for isolation by distance as explaining the
observed differences among
South American samples. Large effective
population sizes and high levels of gene flow characterize the
Andean region of
South America, while non-Andean regions such as
Brazil experienced smaller population sizes and limited gene flow,
which may have caused the differentiation between these two
regions. Therefore, genetic drift most likely affected Brazilian
populations more strongly than Andean groups due to the lower
overall population sizes found in eastern
South
America.Understanding past and present biological variation among
modern human populations, through the observation and assessment of
dental non-metric traits, has implications for global and regional
population history. Human occupation and the processes responsible
for the origin of observed biological diversity in
South America
are significant for understanding human history. This dissertation
assesses dental variation in
South America through both a temporal
and geographical scope. Biological diversity is assessed and
possible causes for observed variation are explored. Quantifying
and exploring the origins for biological variation in
South
American populations allows for a better understanding of how

▼ A multivariate assessment of climate model projections over
South America from the CMIP5 archive is presented. Change in near-surface temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, integrated water vapor transport (IVT), sea level pressure, and wind at multiple pressure levels is quantified across the multi-model suite and an assessment of model-to-model agreement on projected change performed. All models project warming by the mid- and late-21st century throughout the continent, with the highest magnitude projected over tropical regions. The CMIP5 models are in strong agreement that precipitation will decrease in all seasons over portions of Patagonia, especially along the northern portions of the current-climate mid-latitude storm track. This is consistent with a robustly projected poleward shift of the Pacific extratropical high and mid-latitude storm track indicated by a systematic increase in sea level pressure and decrease in westerly wind over Patagonia. Decreased precipitation for the months of September, October, and November is also projected, with strong model agreement, over portions of northern and northeastern Brazil, coincident with decreases in sea level pressure and increases in evapotranspiration. IVT is broadly projected to decrease over southern
South America, coincident with the projected poleward shift of the mid-latitude storm track indicators, with increases projected in the vicinity of the
South Atlantic Convergence Zone in austral spring and summer. Further decomposition of the thermodynamic and dynamic components to this change in IVT indicate that the projected decreases in the mid-latitudes are primarily driven by changes in circulation (i.e. dynamic) while the sub-tropical and tropical changes have a predominantly thermodynamic origin. Results provide a comprehensive picture of climate change across
South America and highlight where projections should be interpreted with the most confidence.

▼ Latin American cities have seen significant demographic growth during the second half of the 20th century. As this expansion was unable to find a formal apparatus for its incorporation into the city, much of it was established through self-produced informal settlements. These settlements have now grown to cover 30% of Latin American cities and have become an alternative for low-income populations seeking to establish themselves within a city. The main goal of this thesis is to carry out a comparative analysis between the cities of Lima and Medellin as centers for applying various ideas and concepts concerning the
development of informal settlements throughout Latin America and thus test a hypothesis regarding whether informal settlements can be a valid alternative for future urban development. Said analysis has been divided into 3 phases. The first phase consists of reviewing the past historical development of informal settlements inside these cities. A second stage is focused on studying the current conditions of such settlements by relying on an urban, socio-economic, demographic and territorial approach that aims to uncover the intersecting links between these elements and their connections to the production of the informal city. Finally, the analysis also seeks to outline future projections for possible areas of informal development by using a basic agent-based model that relies on both the data and the patterns resulting from the study undertaken. The conclusion
of the analysis is that informal settlements remain one of the best alternatives for low-income people to settle in the city.

▼ The reassessment of Global
South contribution to International Relations both in the past and present time, is a crucial challenge for academic research nowadays, constituting an issue that is worthy of interest and analysis for its implications on History and International Relations.
This work aims to decentralize International Relations and make it less Eurocentric. To do so, the author reassessed the role of Latin American thinkers and diplomats in Human Rights theorization in the 1940s, to show that crucial theoretical developments were made outside the Global North. In detail, this thesis argues that the region has actively participated in the construction of the language of human rights instead of simply receiving ideas and concepts from the Global North. It focuses on the Larreta Doctrine, a doctrine developed in Uruguay that tackled multilateralism, sovereignty and the violation of human rights.
Eduardo Rodriguez Larreta, then Uruguayan Foreign Minister, theorized this Doctrine in 1945, in response to the dualism between sovereignty and international Rights protection hardly felt in the Latin American Region. So, Larreta thought that the idea that non-intervention in states’ domestic affairs is conditional to the respect for citizens’ fundamental rights. Moreover, the Uruguayan Foreign Minister stated that a precommitment regime and collective intervention are not a violation of sovereignty.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The South American fish genus Pterophyllum, commonly referred to as Angel Fish, contains three recognized species namely Pterophyllum leopoldi, Pterophyllum altum and Pterophyllum scalare. In addition, morphological variants, particularly of Pt. scalare and Pt. altum, occur in their natural habitat. However, uncertainty regarding the taxonomy and the phylogenetic relationships between the three species of the genus Pterophyllum within the tribe Heroini, still remains.
In the first part of this study three mitochondrial (Cytochrome b, 16S rRNA and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4) and two nuclear (Recombinase Activator Gene 2 and ribosomal S7 intron 1) markers were amplified and sequenced for 27 Pterophyllum samples. Along with this, 166 nucleotide reference sequences, representing six outgroups and 160 Neotropical cichlid taxa, were downloaded for each of the five molecular markers from GenBank. In addition to maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses, a BEAST analysis was performed on the Cytochrome b sequence matrix. This study was the first to conclusively show that the genus Pterophyllum is a monophyletic group of which Pt. leopoldi is the basal lineage whilst Pt. altum and Pt. scalare form a derived sister association. Furthermore, it appears that the evolution of the genus Pterophyllum corresponds to the historical geographical changes of the Amazonian landscape. In addition, the study also provides phylogenetic evidence for the reconnection of the Amazon and Orinoco river systems by means of the Casiquiare channel.
In the second part of this study the sequence variability of 13 additional nuclear markers were investigated in order to expand the five-gene analysis with the aim of enhancing the resolution of the phylogeny. In conjunction with this, the number of Pterophyllum taxa included in the ND4 sequence matrix were increased from two to six representatives for each population of the three species in order to elucidate intraspecies and population variability. The two nuclear genes Mitfb and RpL8 were identified as the most variable of the 13 nuclear genes investigated. The inclusion of these two nuclear genes in the five-gene data matrix, improved the ratio of mitochondrial to nuclear variable characters from 79:21 to 67:33 in the seven-gene phylogeny. Distinction between Pt. altum of the upper Rio Negro and Upper Rio Orinoco was repeatedly confirmed with full statistical support. Variation within Pt. scalare retrieved three groups of which Pt. scalare Santa Isabel and Pt. scalare Manacapuru were the basal lineages. This study offers no phylogenetic evidence to support a hybrid origin for the latter.

▼ The notion of cultural identity as a crucial constitutive element of guitar performance was powerfully expressed in the career of Agustín Barrios, a major but neglected figure in the development of the guitar in the twentieth century. Barrios’ adoption in the 1930s of the persona of Mangoré, a Guaraní Indian from the sixteenth century, provided both a theatrical persona of musical exoticism and primitivism, and a potent statement of Latin American cultural independence. The concept of cultural identity, which has been central to the development of the discipline of ethnomusicology, is here adopted as a theoretical framework against which Mangoré is discussed. The cultural and musical environment of Latin
America in the early decades of the twentieth century, and the iconic status of the guitar in those countries, is considered as the background to the case study proper, that of Barrios as Mangoré between 1930 and 1934. It is argued that as Mangoré, Barrios personified Latin American cultural identity in dramatic fashion, that Mangoré aligned with the European fascination with the primitive during this period and that, moreover, Mangoré retained an authentic and enduring value for Barrios to the end of his life. The significance of Mangoré is then revealed through a discussion of two categories of Barrios’ compositions: the folkloric works which exemplified his treatment of Latin American musical genres; and the tremolo works which expressed the fantasy and romanticism that were integral to his musical imagination. Finally, the relationship between Barrios and Segovia is considered, both in terms of the latter’s self-proclaimed role in the creation of the modern guitar repertoire, and of his criticism of Mangoré and the light this throws on Segovia’s own cultural identity.

▼ How do presidents with ambitious reform agendas successfully implement them in a democratic context? This dissertation examines the dynamics of one particular method of reform: a Constituent Assembly (CA) with supreme power to change the political system. Executives have several options for reform in a democratic context. They can enact reform through standard legislative channels, making use of a legislative majority or moderating and building a coalition with other parties in Congress (eg. Brazil under Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, 2003-2011). They can live with legislative stalemate and bypass Congress through other institutions, by using executive decree power or influencing the judiciary (eg. Nicaragua under Daniel Ortega, 2007-present). Or, they can marginalize Congress in a process centered on citizen participation and reform of the Constitution, which, if successful, will lead to a new Congress with a supportive majority. This last strategy is my focus. I draw on case-studies of three recent successes (Venezuela 1999, Ecuador 2008, and Bolivia 2009), eight months of fieldwork, and evidence from one unsuccessful case (Honduras 2009). I identify a range of factors that increase the likelihood a president will choose a CA over other reform options, of which the two most important are insufficient partisan/coalitional support in Congress and a willingness to bend the institutional rules. In turn, I argue that the success of reform via CA is jointly determined by two features. The executive needs mobilizational leverage, the ability to rally popular support behind the reform agenda, and institutional leverage, the ability to convince the Judiciary or Electoral Council to allow the initiation of the reform process. By marginalizing or closing Congress, presidents who successfully implement this strategy have undercut a primary institution of liberal representative democracy. Yet, they have also retained democratic legitimacy by relying on mechanisms of direct democracy and constitutional reform. Thus, these reforms enhance one pillar of democracy - participation - while undermining the other pillar - contestation. This dissertation examines one way in which executives seek to sidestep legislative opposition, contributing to a deeper understanding of democracy and power in contemporary Latin
America. It also sheds light on the inherent tension between majoritarian, participatory democracy and representative conceptions of democracy.

▼ This is a study of the pursuit of African American colonization as a state and latterly a federal policy during the period c. 1850-65. Historians generally come to the topic via an interest in the Civil War and especially in Lincoln, but in so doing, they saddle it with moral judgment and the burden of rather self-referential debates. The thesis argues that, whilst the era’s most noteworthy ventures into African American colonization did indeed emerge from the circumstances of the Civil War, and from the personal efforts of the president, one can actually offer the freshest insights on Lincoln by bearing in mind that colonization was, above all, a real policy. It enjoyed the support of other adherents too, and could be pursued by various means, which themselves might have undergone adjustment over time and by trial and error. Using an array of unpublished primary sources, the study finds that Lincoln and his allies actively pursued colonization for a longer time, and with more persistence in the face of setbacks, than scholars normally assume. The policy became entangled in considerations of whether it was primarily a domestic or an international matter, whilst other overlapping briefs also sabotaged its execution, even as the administration slowly learned various lessons about how not to go about its implementation.By early 1864, the resulting confusion, as well as the political fallout from the fiasco of the one expedition to go ahead, curtailed the president’s ability to continue with the policy. There are strong suggestions, however, that he had not repudiated colonization, and possibly looked to revive it, even as he showed a tentative interest in alternative futures for African Americans. This thesis makes a case against unrealistically binary thinking, anachronistic assumptions, abused hindsight, sweeping interpretive frameworks, and double standards of evidentiary assessment respecting a technically imperfect and ethically awkward policy.

▼ Despite some evidence of recognition of more complex approaches, research on assessment reform neglects to address some of the problematic aspects of implementation. Such research may acknowledge discursive dissonance between different actors and the broader interests involved but these are not a central object of study. At the same time, contributions from sociology of education, critical policy scholarship and complexity theory have illuminated some dimensions of assessment reform processes, namely, assessment as a technology of power and as connected to broader ideologies and assessment reform processes as complex, messy, and contradictory in nature. Drawing from these sources, this thesis seeks to answer the following research questions: 1) What are the main systems (with their actors, activities and internal relations) and the main interactions between them involved in assessment reform processes in Chile?; 2) How are discourses on assessment produced, how do they circulate in this system, and how does knowledge on assessment relate to power issues? Given the nature of the problem under scrutiny, critical discourse analysis from a Bakhtinian and Foucauldian perspective is selected as the overarching perspective, with polysystems theory (Even-Zohar, 1990), intertextuality (Fairclough, 2009) and the ideological analysis of discourse (Van Dijk, 1999 and 2008) as the main theoretical tools of analysis. The sources of data are documents as well as interviews with policy authorities and practitioners. The thesis makes a case for situating the study of assessment reforms in the context of three broader dimensions, namely the historical dimension, that incorporates the diachronic dimension of assessment reforms both in the short and the long term; the systemic dimension, related to the processes of production, circulation and consumption of discourses around assessment in a complex web of systems, beliefs, interactions and (power) relationships between their actors, and the ideological dimension. The consideration of this broader framework allows for the inclusion of those aspects that are generally left out of research on assessment reforms, filling a relevant research gap and reconceptualising the field through a more complex approach.

▼ Introduction and Purpose: In recent years, global
public health security has been threatened by a number of emerging
zoonotic diseases including H5N1 and H1N1 influenza, SARS/MERS, and
Ebola. Additionally, endemic zoonoses, such as rabies, burden
countries year after year, placing demands on limited finances and
personnel. Due to this resource limitation, prioritization
exercises are important to focusing zoonoses control and
eradication efforts in developing countries, such as those in Latin
American and the Caribbean. To learn more about the prioritization
processes of Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs), a
survey was conducted which collected information on priority
emerging and endemic zoonoses, countries' prioritization criteria
and methodologies, and suggestions to strengthen countries’
capacities and the regional approach to zoonoses control. Methods:
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) sent the online
questionnaire to the zoonoses program managers of the Ministries of
Health (MOH) and Ministries of Agriculture (MAg) of 33 LACs from
January to April of 2015. The questionnaire comprised 36 single,
multiple choice and open-ended questions to inform the objectives
of the survey. A descriptive exploratory analysis was completed in
R (i386 3.1.2). Findings: Fifty-four ministries (26 MOH, 25 MAg,
and 3 combined responses) in 31 LAC countries responded to the
survey. Within these 31 countries, 22 (85%) had specialized
zoonoses units in the MOHs, 5 (20%) in the MAgs, and 2 (67%) had a
specialized zoonoses unit in a combined entity. Thirty-two
ministries responded that they conduct formal prioritization
exercises for endemic zoonoses, most of them annually (69%). The
three priority endemic zoonoses for the MOHs were leptospirosis,
rabies, and brucellosis while the three priorities for the MAgs
were brucellosis, rabies, and tuberculosis. Diagnosis for rabies
and leptospirosis were cited as the capacities most in need of
development. The most wanting cross-cutting capacity was
coordination between stakeholders.Twenty-eight ministries performed
formal prioritization exercises for emerging zoonoses. The three
priority emerging zoonoses for the MOHs were Ebola, avian
influenza, and Chikungunya while the three priorities for the MAgs
were avian influenza, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and
West Nile virus. Surveillance for avian influenza and Ebola, and
diagnosis for BSE were cited as the capacities most
wanting.Implications: The survey is the first comprehensive effort
to date to inform the status of zoonoses programs in LAC, and
provides the evidence to build a regional strategy and identify
capacity needs. A number of improvements appear evident: i)
standardization of prioritization approaches, surveillance
definitions and evaluation processes to support comparisons, ii)
greater communication and coordination between countries, and iii)
a platform to inform zoonoses occurrence in the region and the
status of the region's capacities.

This thesis seeks to reveal some sui generis situations in the South American integration process. At the same time identifies, through joint securitization of common strategic assets, a
converging movement characterized by geo-strategic restraint focused on extra-regional actors and, on the other hand, a divergent regional integration process, related to intermestics latent conflicts as well as genuinely geo-economic issues, such as sub-regional asymmetries, the similarities and competitions around the exportation market, the dispute to attract financial capitals and the overlapping of bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements with some central countries. Moreover, this thesis aims to contribute two other things: the first is that the South American subcontinent, despite increased military cooperation via the Conselho de Defesa Sul-Americano, cannot be classified as a Regional Security Complex, due to several related issues, among others, the militarizations of borders and the different definitions of threats from countries in the region; another revealing process is related to the persistence of traditional or conventional conflicts in the subcontinent, even
after the 1990s, thereby proving that the liberal theory of extinction of this typology of conflict with the emergence…

▼ I conducted a synthesis of agricultural changes during the mid-18th century until the present in the principal temperate agricultural regions of the world (western Europe, the United States of America, the Republic of South Africa, and
austral South America, with a concentration on the Republic of Argentina) from the perspective of the impacts that intensi¯cation in agriculture has on wildlife in agroecosystems. Additionally, I produced a review and synthesis of the e®ects of
agricultural land use on birds, with an emphasis on the Galliformes. Based upon these analysis, and ¯eld research on the spotted tinamou (Nothura maculosa) in agroecosystems in the Pampas of Argentina, I discuss the past, present, and future implications
for wildlife conservation and management in agroecosystems in the Pampas and Chaco and Yungas forest of Argentina. In the regions analyzed, agricultural production has become increasingly intensi¯ed since the mid-20th century; typi¯ed by increased
mechanization, irrigation, agrochemical use, farm consolidation, regional specialization, area of cultivated pastures, and livestock densities. Combined, these reduce the amount, quality, and heterogeneity in habitats across scales from the region to
within ¯elds, which the analysis revealed were the factors most in°uential in determining distribution and abundance of avian species dependent upon these systems. Speci¯cally, the loss of fallow or idle land, woody encroachment, homogeneity in cover
types and vegetation structure and composition, indirect e®ects of pesticides on food availability, and earlier and more frequent mowing were key in explaining reductions in avian diversity and abundance in temperate agroecosystems. For the Galliformes
the loss and/or degradation of preferred habitats, during both the breeding and non-breeding seasons, due to changes in agroecosystem management was related to observed decreases in populations and survival. Over-winter mortality increased during
extremes in minimum temperature and snow cover, and was exacerbated where su±cient wintering cover was limited. Moreover, increased over-winter mortality was associated with the proximity of woody areas, which facilitates higher predation. The loss of
preferred nesting habitat not only decreases the number of nesting individuals, but increases nest loss and mortality of incubating adults through increased predation and losses to agricultural activities. Of particular importance were decreases in the
abundance of preferred arthropod prey for foraging chicks due to direct and indirect e®ects of pesticides, which were responsible for increased chick mortality. Although there exists a large body research into the e®ects of land use and birds,
particularly gamebirds, little research exists for these species in Argentina or Latin America in general. In Argentina the most important gamebird species is the spotted tinamou (Nothura maculosa). This species has become increasingly scarce in a
signi¯cant portion of its range, possibly due to agricultural intensi¯cation over the…

▼ During the austral spring, the interactions between the southward-moving intertropical convergence zone with cold fronts that progress equatorward contribute to the complexity of the timing and regional differences in
South American Monsoon onset. This thesis studied the impact of cold fronts on the onset of the
South American monsoon. Previous studies have shown that cold fronts undergo a seasonal transition in structure, intensity and propagation. In fact, whereas wintertime cold fronts bring relatively little rainfall but strong temperature anomalies to
South America, summertime cold fronts affect the rainfall patterns well into the tropical portions of the continent but cause very small changes in temperature. Cold fronts are the dynamical trigger of monsoon onset in at least some regions of
South America. Â Â In this study the 1979-2007 the National Center for Environmental Prediction and the National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis data (NCEP/NCAR) and Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) data are used to produce a composite analysis of the dynamic and thermodynamic structures, intensity and propagation of cold fronts that occur before ("pre-onset), during ("onset), and after ("post-onset") monsoon onset in the SACZ region. Those composites are used to study the effect of cold fronts on the abrupt onset of the monsoon season in the region of the
South Atlantic convergence zone (SACZ). Â Â The "pre-onset", "onset", and "post-onset" composites showed differences in speed and propagation of the cold fronts. In the "pre-onset" composites, cold fronts passed through
South America quickly and did not reach the SACZ region. The "onset" composites showed cold fronts moving through the SACZ region and becoming stationary, bringing precipitation to the region. The precipitation in the region due to cold fronts is an indicator of the abrupt and dynamic onset in the region. Therefore at the time of "onset", there is a radical change in the structure and propagation of cold fronts propagating through
South America that triggers monsoon onset in the SACZ region.   Years with normal, early and late onsets were compared to understand how thermodynamic changes, such as volumetric soil moisture, and sensible and latent heat fluxes, contribute to monsoon onset in the region. Quick changes in the thermodynamic variables right before onset in the SACZ region indicate that there is a fast onset triggered by cold fronts. In the WR, since there is a slow change in the thermodynamic variables before onset, WR onset does not seem to be associated with the passage of cold fronts.  The effect of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on SAMS onset was also analyzed. The WR and the SACZ did not show a clustering of onset dates within the enhanced phases of the MJO for
South America, therefore onset in those regions is found to not be affected by the MJO. Â
