▼ Iodine-125 brachytherapy (BT) sources have gained a wide application in the treatment of prostate and intraocular cancers. Determination of the source strength of I-125 seeds is, therefore, mandatory to ensure accurate and optimal dose delivery to a patient undergoing BT treatment. There is the need to verify source strength stated or provided by a manufacturer of any BT source prior to clinical use of the source in fulfillment of American Association of Physicists in Medicine and European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (AAPM-ESTRO) recommendations for low energy BT sources. For low energy source, this process is sometimes ignored due to unavailability of appropriate equipment to facilitate the measurement of the source strength under clinical conditions. The present study sought to find ways of measuring source strengths of I-125 BT seed sources (model number STM1251) in use at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) for permanent low dose rate (LDR) prostate BT with a well-type ionization dosimetry system, which is dedicated to high dose rate (HDR) BT source calibration. The BT seed implants are manufactured by Bard BT Inc., and are loaded in a Mick® cartridge which has maximum loading capacity of 15 seeds. To achieve this, a source holder which could be accommodated within the well-type ionization chamber (WTIC) was designed and constructed from Perspex (PMMA). The constructed source holder was designed to hold a whole cartridge of I-125 BT seeds within the WTIC to facilitate batch source strength measurement. The source holder ensuring reproducibility of I-125 seeds placements during source calibration, also enabled placement of a cartridge such that the point of concentration of activity of I-125 seeds coincided with the most sensitive part of the WTIC. Calibration coefficient was established for the dosimeter system (including source holder) through correlation and regression analysis of source strength measurements performed with the dosimeter system which were compared to source strengths with national institute of standards and technology (NIST) traceability provided by manufacturer of the I-125 seed sources. The obtained calibration coefficient was validated by performing I-125 seed source calibrations with the dosimetry system and comparing the source strengths with their counterparts stated by manufacturer of the I-125 seed sources. The dosimeter system was found to have calibration coefficient of 3.372 ± 0.200 ×1011U/A for the I-125 seed sources. The mean percentage deviation of the source strengths was found to be 2.588% which is in agreement with AAPM-ESTRO recommendations. The constructed low cost source holder is, therefore, recommended to be used for Bard I-125 seed source calibration with a HDR 1000 plus WTIC. This source calibration approach comes in handy for BT departments with limited resources.

This thesis focuses on the utilization of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) to improve the performance of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs). In particular, we focused on randomly dispersed NPs by thermal evaporation during the OLED fabrication process. In the first part of the experimental work, we focused on the fabrication and study of random NPs of silver. The effects of their position with respect to the emissive layer (EML) were studied. The results show improvements in electrical and optical performance of OLEDs incorporating these NPs for EML-NPs distances greater than 15 nm. Subsequently, we were interested in the study of the plasmonic field range action by developing an original method based on the use of a DCM red-emitting layer embedded in Alq3 green EML. By varying the position of this thin layer of DCM, it was possible to probe at the nanoscale the extent of the effects of Au NPs in particular on the variation of the luminous efficiency of the OLED. Finally, we studied the influence of Al plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) on the performance of a blue OLED subjected to the emission of exciplexes. The results show that in the case of OLED with Al-NPs, the emission of exciplexes is reduced thanks to the LSPR effect and the luminous efficiency of the plasmonic device indicates a 53% improvement over that of the OLED without NPs.

The bicentenary of the french civil Code was the occasion for an assessment ; with the reform of the french civil Code it’s time to look ahead to the prospects. From that point of view, one of the major preoccupations should be the definition of the sources of obligations, which determines the implementation of the new law of obligations. This assertion can be surprising. It is often suggested that the reform mostly provides continuity and that there are no other notions as known as contract, quasi-contract, civil liability or commitment by unilateral will. Yet, how can we fail to see that this impression of an unwavering consistency could be an effect of the new provisions’ shadows ?This work aims to take advantage of the gap of the reform to come back to our doctrines. Unlike practitioner, who fears instability, theoretician is not afraid by the motions of the law, which provide him to consider their background. The study of the evolutions implied by the law of obligations’ reform, conducted through an historical and systematic lens, will thus reveal, at the level of each source and at the conjunction of all, significant upheavals which would probably require to think about the law of obligations differently that we used to do

▼ The Mekong River is one of the world???s most important rivers in terms of its size, economic importance, cultural significance, productivity, and biodiversity. The Mekong River???s fisheries and biodiversity are threatened by major hydropower development and over-exploitation. Knowledge of river food web ecology is essential for management of the impacts created by anthropogenic activities on plant and animal populations and ecosystems. In the present study, I surveyed four tropical rivers in Cambodia within the Mekong River Basin. I examined the basal production
sources supporting fish biomass in the four rivers during the dry and wet seasons and explored the relationship between trophic position and body size of fish at various taxonomic levels, among local species assemblages, and across trophic guilds. I used stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to estimate fish trophic levels and the principal primary production
sources supporting fishes. My study provides evidence that food web dynamics in tropical rivers undergo significant seasonal shifts and emphasizes that river food webs are altered by dams and flow regulation. Seston and benthic algae were the most important production
sources supporting fish biomass during the dry season, and riparian macrophytes appeared to be the most important production source supporting fishes during the wet season. In the river with strong flow regulation from an upstream impoundment, seston and benthic algae were even more important production
sources supporting fishes during the dry season. My findings challenge the Eltonian theory of size-based trophic structure in food webs and also contradict the broadly accepted prediction of the fishing-down-the-food-web concept. Eltonian and fishing-down-the-food-web concepts propose that trophic level is strongly correlated with body size, but I found no significant correlation between body size and trophic position for fish assemblages. Results suggest that body size distributions are not useful for prediction the trophic structure of communities with diverse detritivores, omnivores and insectivores, but that it is a good predictor of trophic position among piscivorous fishes.

▼ Since Independence the government of the day strives towards quality education for all. Educational financial constraint issues came to the fore, when the announcement was made by the Minister of Finance that the paying of compulsory school fees for secondary education will be abolished as from the beginning of the 2016 academic year. Although about 25% of the National Budget is for education, only about 20% of that amount is for education resources and day-to-day expenses. This required that schools should find alternative funds to finance the School Development Fund, since various authors indicated that funds supplied by government are just not enough for effective and efficient education delivery. The study therefore aims to identify financial sources and financial management strategies to fund School Development Funds. The study will also investigate to what extend public secondary schools are aware of these resources and if the human resources have the necessary expertise to manage the School Development Fund effectively.
The qualitative research design was used. Three public secondary schools, excluding special schools, from the twenty seven registered schools in the Khomas Region were selected. One school each was randomly selected from the low income group, the average income group and the high income group, using the maximum variation sampling method, whereby financial information from previous years was used. The major findings of this study were that principals do not have the financial knowledge and skills to find or efficiently manage various financial resources, like sponsors, donors, alumni, crowd funding, thrift shops, On-Line-Landing-Pages and investments, as well as investing these funds for sustainable income, which is available for effective education delivery. The study recommended that persons with due knowledge should be appointed at schools and that their job descriptions extended in order to take advantage from the various financing sources obtainable by schools. Secondly, principals should receive in-depth financial training and have more authority in the financial decision making by using an effective School Management Model. Lastly, management of school buildings and facilities should be part of the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture who should decentralise the control there-of.

The ability to accurately characterize an underwater sound source is an important prerequisite for many applications including detection, classification, monitoring and mitigation. Unfortunately, anechoic underwater recording environments, required to make ideal recordings, are generally not available. Current methods adjust source recordings with spatially averaged estimates of reverberant levels. However, adjustments can introduce significant errors due to a high degree of energy variability in reverberant enclosures and solutions are inherently limited to incoherent approximations. This dissertation introduces an approach towards a practical, improved procedure to obtain an anechoic estimate of an unknown source recorded in a reverberant environment. Corresponding research is presented in three self-contained chapters. An anechoic estimate of the source is obtained by equalizing the recording with the inverse of the channel's impulse response (IR). The IR is deconvolved using a broadband logarithmic excitation signal. The length of the IR is estimated using methods borrowed from room acoustics and inversion of non-minimum phase IR is accomplished in the least-squares sense. The proposed procedure is validated by several experiments conducted in a reverberant pool environment. Results indicate that the energy of control sources can be recovered coherently and incoherently with root-mean-square error (RMSE) of-70 dB (10-70 kHz band). The proposed method is subsequently applied to four recorded SCUBA configurations. Results indicate that reverberation added as much as 6.8 dB of energy. Mean unadjusted sound pressure levels (0.3-80 kHz band) were 130 5.9 dB re 1 Pa at 1 m. While the dereverberation method is applied here to SCUBA signals, it is generally applicable to other sources if the impulse response of the recording channel can be obtained separately. This dissertation also presents an approach to separate all coloration from the deconvolved IR. This method can be used to estimate the channel's IR or the magnitude spectrum of the combined electrical equipment. The procedure is validated using synthetic results of an imagesource model and the channel's IR is recovered over the full band with a RMSE of-31 dB.

▼ With the recent interest in increasing the penetration of renewable energy
sources onto the power grid, there has been an unprecedented rapid deployment of wind generation, especially in the US Pacific Northwest. While wind farm developers have continued to expand their operations, power system operators are left to deal with the consequences – specifically, the uncontrollable, variable nature of the wind. While this variability can be quantified using traditional statistical measures, these statistics are often not directly usable by system operators. Composed of two papers, this research explores other methods for evaluating the variability of renewable resources to better understand their impact on the grid. The first paper examines how renewable penetration can be increased by diversifying the types of resources used (e.g., integrating an equal mix of wind, solar, and ocean wave power). The second paper builds off of the first by developing a solution to the lack of available power generation data necessary to conduct this research and then by using generated synthetic data to examine the impacts of increasing renewable resource penetration levels. Both papers point to the value of a diversified renewable energy portfolio, including high-levels of wind, solar, and ocean wave power generation.

▼ Modern man’s addiction to fossil fuels or
non-renewable energy is the key reason behind the unprecedented
economic growth experienced globally over the past 100 years.
However, by definition these energy resources are not only finite,
but their widespread use is causing massive environmental damage
through air pollution and its associated impact on people’s health,
as well as the emission of greenhouse gases which are attributed to
the unprecedented rate of global warming - And it is for this
reason that international initiatives such as the Kyoto Protocol,
(which South Africa is a signatory of), aim to mitigate global
warming by reducing member countries’ CO2 emissions.Simultaneously,
South Africa (SA) is experiencing its own electricity supply
problems due to under investment in the sector. While new power
plants are being built, they utilize non-renewable energy
sources
and will take time to build (up to 5 years). It is also important
to note that due to large coal reserves, South Africans enjoy
amongst the lowest electricity tariffs in the world, but SA is
amongst this planet’s biggest per capita polluters. The research
thus aims to identify whether high income households are wasteful
users of electricity - due to historic low prices, lack of
knowledge regarding energy efficiency and the impact that
electricity generation has on the environment - while at the same
time determining the group's perception of domestic solar water
heaters (DSWH), given our country’s favourable
climaticconditions.

▼ Around 3.15% of the total world energy consumption accounts for Information and Com-
munication Technology (ICT) sector. ICT's contribution to global greenhouse gas emission is expected to double in the coming five years.
Base transceiver station (BTS), an important but energy hungry component of access network in a cellular communication system, is usually resourced to serve busy hour traffic but remains under-utilized for most of the 24-hour period irrespective of the traffic load.
Hence, self organizing networks (SON) that react to the variable traffic load are being studied to minimize energy consumption without compromising the QoS of the network.
Discrete time Markov decision process (DTMDP) as an optimization tool to manage the operation of BTS is investigated in this thesis. MDP _nds an optimal policy that takes state specific optimal decisions, i.e. actions, and gets immediate rewards which maximizes the long term expected reward. The rewards obtained are the power savings when BTS operates as a SON by means of dynamic sectorization against the operation of BTS in uppermost mode irrespective of the traffic load. Further, transition cost to address mode switching cost and delay cost to address QoS are also discussed and elaborated through appropriate simulation to realize the actual energy savings.

▼ Biobutanol was produced in the present work through Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation (SSF) of cellulosic feedstock (i.e. wheat straw (WS)) and algal biomass. Novel Clostridial fused strains developed earlier underwent mutagenesis for strain enhancement using UV and chemical mutagen (ethyl methanesulphonate). Results for mutated strains showed higher biobutanol production of 14.6 g/L, with total acetone, biobutanol and ethanol (ABE) yield of 0.6 g/g. Moreover, mutated strains showed tolerance to biobutanol toxicity at 15g/L; ~15% increase over literature values. Algal biomass was pre-treated using different thermal, chemical and enzymatic pre-treatments to define its biobutanol production potential compared to WS. A total sugar concentration of 26.4 g/L and glucose concentration of 12.48 g/L was obtained with enzymatic pre-treatment. Biobutanol production through SSF of algal biomass showed maximum concentration of biobutanol of 7.52 g/L with a total ABE yield of 0.48 g/g.

▼ The proliferation of energy-efficient appliances and
modern consumer electronics has resulted in numerous
power-electronic-based harmonic sources penetrating into
residential households. Due to the huge number and wide adoption of
these new harmonic sources, techniques for determining the
cumulative harmonic impact of them are urgently needed. A
probabilistic bottom-up technique is proposed in this thesis to
model aggregated harmonic sources and other linear loads. This
technique not only takes into account appliances’ daily usage
pattern as well as household activities, but also provides the
flexibility to represent future market trends and policy changes.
By modeling the residential distribution systems with this
technique, one can estimate how serious the harmonic impacts become
when more harmonic-producing appliances penetrate into the
residential loads. The proposed technique has also been applied to
evaluate the power quality impact of charging plug-in hybrid
electric vehicles (PHEVs) on residential distribution
systems.

▼ Somaliland is a country that has not recognised internationally since it gets its independence in 1991, which has been suffering from electricity crisis due to high losses of electricity, less trained personnel, shortage of efficient technical plan, poor infrastructure and high cost of energy (COE) comparing to neighbour countries. The purpose of this project is to come up with plan to reduce this high COE by making economic feasibility to both the existing system of diesel system and proposing renewable energy-based microgrid system in Berbera Power Generation Company. Hybrid Optimization Model of Renewable Energy (HOMER) simulation software is applied to implement cost benefit analysis for both the existing and proposed model. The existing system is evaluated and studded how many litters of diesel the generators uses annually, the cost of energy and the amount of carbon emission that the system produces yearly. Renewable based hybrid microgrid system that consist of two renewable energy resources (wind and PV), two diesel generators, battery storage and converter is optimized in this project. Hence, the proposed system with renewable fraction of 55% can reduce the cost of energy 29% and provides less carbon emission of 40% then the existing system of diesel based system. Last but not least, this project recommended hybrid microgrid system that has less cost of energy of USD 0.262/kWh and environmental friendly system in Berbera Somaliland.

▼ Wind Energy is the one of the fastest growing renewable energy in the last two
decades. Besides having the most rapid growth, wind energy has become a big part
of the energy consumed globally. However, some of the key factors for a successful
wind power project can be overlooked at times, leading to the failure of such projects
and posing negative effects on its contribution. This project studies the key
parameters that are crucial in the process of selecting potential location for optimal
success in wind power planning at its initial stage. The aim is to build a model that
can be generally applied during wind power planning. A multi-criteria decision
making tool: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is implemented using Saaty scale
ranging from 1-9 to form pairwise comparisons and evaluate the weightage of each
criteria. The result shows the priorities of the parameters and their significance,
indicating the order of which they should be carried out during planning process.

▼ Nowadays, people start to think the Drag type of vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) as a
potential and reliable wind machine in the future. It advantageous of simpler and
significantly cheap to build and maintain than conventional Horizontal axis wind turbine
(HAWT) attract the world attention. However, such rotor is suffering from poor
efficiency problems. The present study will consider the design improvement of
Savonius rotor, which is the basic geometry of drag machine, as a critical step to
increase the efficiency of output power. Investigation is conducted to study the effect of
geometrical configuration on the performance of the rotor in terms of coefficient of
torque, coefficient of power and power output. There are three different types of
modification; number of blades variable, shielding method and combination of both
configuration. Computerized Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation is conducted to analyze
the flow characteristic of all the rotor types. The continuity and Reynolds Averaged
Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and realizable k- E epsilon turbulence model are
numerically solved by commercial software Ansys-Fluent 14.0. Simulation computed
the pressure and velocity field of the flow and the force acting on the rotor blades. The
resultant force, pressure and torque coefficient obtained will be used to calculate power
coefficient and power output. The results obtained by transient and steady method for
the conventional two bladed Savonius rotor are in agreement with those obtained
experimentally by other authors and this indicates that the method can be successfully
used for such analysis. The modified 3 and 4 bladed rotors with hybrid shielding method
give the highest maximum power coefficient which 0.37 at TSR 0.5.

▼ Currently, renewable energy sources are the main driver for future electricity generation.
This trend is growing faster in the developed countries in order to reduce the green
house effect and also in response to the limited supply of oil, gas and coal which are
currently the major sources for electric generation. For example, the main renewable
energy sources are from wind energy and solar energy but these energies are only available
to those countries that are exposed to these resources. In this thesis an alternative
energy source is investigated where it can be generated from the moving objects or in
form of kinetic energy. The idea is to convert the kinetic energy during landing aircraft
into electrical energy which it can also be stored and transferred to the existing electrical
network. To convert this kinetic energy to electrical energy, the linear generator (LG)
and uncontrolled rectifier have been used for energy conversion. The LG have been
modelled in 3-phase model or in dq model and combined with the diode rectitier that is
used to generate the dc signal outputs. Due to the uncontrolled rectitier the electrical
outputs will have decaying amplitude along the landing time. This condition also happen
to the LG outputs such as the force and the power output. In order to control these
outputs the cascaded buck-boost converter has been used. This converter is responsible
to control the output current at the rectitier and also the LG output power during
landing to more controllable power output. Here, the H1 current control strategy has
been used as it offers a very good performance for current tracking and to increase the
robustness of the controller. During landing huge power is produced at the beginning
and when the landing time is increased, the generated input power from LG is reduced
to zero. Due to this, the energy storage that consits of ultracapacitor, bidirectional converter
and boost converter are usedin order to store and to release the energy depends
on the input power source and load grid power. The voltage proportional-integral (PI)
control strategy has been used for both the converters. The last part is to transfer the
energy from the source and at the ultracapacitor to the load by using the inverter as the
processing device. The power controller and current controller are used at the inverter
in order to control the power flow between the inverter and the grid. This is when the
reference power is determined from the load power in order to generate the reference
current by using the voltage oriented controller (VOC), while the H1 current controller
is used to regulate the inverter current in order to inject the suitable amount of current
that refer to the load power. Finally, a complete energy recovery system for landing
aircraft with the grid connection have been put together to make the whole system to
be as a new renewable energy source for the future electricity generation.

▼ In the power grid system, the ultimate goals are to transmit power with high power quality and power factor, economical and low risk of system failure. The ever increasing of power demands and loads especially non-linear loads making the power system network become complex to operate and the system becomes insecure with large power flows without adequate control. Renewable energy sources, which are expected to be a promising alternative energy source, can bring new challenges when connected to the power grid system. However, the generated power from renewable energy source is always fluctuating due to environmental conditions. In the same way, wind power source injection into an electric grid affects the power quality due to the fluctuation nature of the wind and the comparatively new types of its generators panel. One way to introduce power system control is by applying controller known as FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) controllers. STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) and SSSC (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) is one of the FACTS controllers and can be introduced to the power system to regulate terminal voltage and to improve system’s stability and power quality. The FACTS devices (STATCOM and SSSC) control scheme for the grid connected with wind energy generation system is simulated using MATLAB/PSAT in power system block set. By using IEEE 14 bus power system network, the effectiveness of STATCOM and SSSC are tested by applying the controller at the critical location of the power system.

▼ Today’s electric grid was designed to operate as a vertical structure consisting of generation, transmission and distribution and advanced control support devices for reliability, stability and efficiency. However, our conventional system grid now facing new challenges including the penetration of Renewable Energy Resources (RER). The advanced development of power grid system for future will give immediate impacts of anew connection such as power flow direction, protection, voltage profile, power quality and stability. This project aims to find out the performance of smart grid system with renewable energy integration and focuses on power flow studies. Thus, modeling of electrical power grid for smart grid is a part of the project throughout some of conventional calculation. The calculation of power flow is based on Newton Raphson method and was developed with existing software for analysis. The power flow calculation aim to evaluate the parameters of that particular performance such as voltages, currents, real and reactive power flow in a system under a given load conditions. The standard test system that used was IEEE 14-Bus System and modification was made to the grid within the integration of renewable energy. Effect of FACTS also implemented in this project as additional case to study the power flow. The comparisons and results from simulation show the variation of power flow when the renewable energy and FACTS devices were applied. In conclusion, this project focus on research to study the power flow in the smart grid with renewable energy integration modeled.

▼ Renewable energy sources are major issues in order to address the energy problem.
Among them, the PV (Photovoltaic) system will be dominant because its availability
and reliability. One of the common problems that arise due to the formation of solar
PV panels is capacitive ground current. Although transformer helps in reducing this
problem, the poor side of having the transformer in PV systems is accounted to bulky
in size and hard to install the entire PV system. Indirectly, the cost is higher and led
to a lower efficiency due to higher losses of power. To solve this, transformerless
inverter topology offers a solution for the efficiency, size and weight. The leakage
current depends on both inverter topology and control strategy. In this report,
different inverter topologies have been reviewed with respect to ground current
formation due to inverter switching that causes varying common mode voltage that
will excite the resonant circuit as well as causes the leakage current phenomenon.
The transformerless inverter topologies that are considered are Bipolar H-Bridge,
Modified HB-ZVR and NPC. In order to study the effect of having a transformer in
eliminating the ground current, Bipolar H-Bridge inverter with transformer also
include in this project. All proposed topologies are modelled and simulated to
compare the pattern and behavior of ground leakage current with other existing
topology. By comparing the pattern of the output from the simulation, a conclusion is
given which proves that NPC topology are suitable for PV application due to low
leakage current compared with other two topologies.

▼ Nowadays, wind turbine became one of the largest energy suppliers of energy in world. The focal point in the wind turbine system is where the wind is harvested and converted into useable energy by the wind turbine blade. This study emphasized on determining the performance of continuous and slotted type of 5 meter diameter wind turbine blades for low wind speed in Malaysia. The Autodesk Inventor 2013 software was used as to develop the three dimensional model NACA 4412 airfoil blades with and without slot before evaluation of aerodynamic characteristics by using ANSYS software. This evaluation of aerodynamic characteristics of the slotted wind turbine blades with different slot configurations is believed could to benefit the material weight reduce its cost as it is constantly rising. Blades with lighter material would produce wind turbines with low rotational inertia and therefore would yield better energy performance at lower wind speeds. The aerodynamic results shows an increased value of lift coefficient with the increasing value of angle of attack (0 - 30).

▼ This project involved the design and fabrication of energy conversion and storage
system for vehicle's wind turbine. The energy generated by wind turbine was stored
in the 12 volt battery for the use of the vehicle components. In the early stage of the
project, a review of the existing energy conversion and storage for vehicle's power
system was carried out. Several circuit designs were proposed and tested by using
National Instrument Software. An optimum design for energy conversion system is
fabricated and mounted on a vehicle. A test was conducted on the energy conversion
and storage system to evaluate its performance. The results indicated that the power
generated by the system is directly proportional to the speed of the alternator. The
time taken for charging a battery was also recorded and it was found that about 2 to
3 hours was required to fully charge the 12-volt battery depending on the size and
capacity of the battery used. The power generated by the system was 20.4 watt and
120.5 watt at cruising speed of 60 km/h and 120 km/h, respectively. The final step in
the project is to increase the voltage stored in the battery up to 200 volts. The high
voltage is required to charge the battery with high voltage capacity.

▼ Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) is a well-known technology that relies essentially
on the design and fabrication of a concentrator optic part and with the use of
Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) as a basic shape. However, common
drawbacks of the 3-dimension (3-D) CPC are the decreasing geometrical
concentration ratio which leads to the reduction of the optical and cell output
performance. The aim of this research is to perform comparative studies of the
Rectangular Compound Parabolic Concentrator (RCPC) by combining reflective
surface and refractive dielectric materials. The proposed concentrator model was
designed by intersecting two 2-dimension (2-D) compound parabolic concentrators
(CPC). A basic formulation characteristic of CPC shape was used to create RCPC
design configuration with a geometrical concentration ratio of 4 and a maximum half
acceptance angle

▼ Energy is very important for countries growth and economy. The global warning of using fossil fuel to generate electricity increase which plays an important role to increase the demand for renewable energy to generate electricity. Renewable energy is the energy that collected from renewable sources like Solar, wind, waves and others. The problem of renewable sources that is unexpected and have intermittent nature. This thesis contain modeling of Photovoltaic renewable energy system to produces maximum 10 KW/h. Moreover, the study contains modeling of wind energy system to produces 14 KW/h. Reducing the effect of the intermittent nature of renewable sources on the electricity generation is a challenging task. The end of the project are proposed a hybrid modeling of both the PV and the wind systems by using DC link using Matlab 2017b Simulink software. The case study suffer huge shortage of electrical power production. The maximum power is 24 KW/h obtained using hybrid system. The demonstrated system as standalone or grid off system due to targeted the rural electrification. The resulted hybrid system noticed that it’s improve the power and the under worst case which the system tested on it the battery can charge and the system ready to extra load.

▼ The present study has been executed to clarify the advantage of using latent thermal storage integrated with a back pass solar air heater (SAH). The purpose of this study is to design, fabricate and evaluate the performance of SAH with integrated nanoparticles enhanced phase change material (PCM) absorber storage system. Three different SAH configurations have been designed and studied; without thermal storage, with thermal storage using paraffin wax as a PCM and with thermal storage using Al2O3-paraffin wax. A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation coupled with the energy balance equation is solved using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software program to implement numerical computations. The numerical analysis is conducted to determine the optimum collector dimensions in terms of length (L), width (W) and depth of air flow channel (Hch) at air mass flow rate of 0.03 kg/s and solar irradiance of 1000 W/m2. Results obtained from the numerical analysis indicate that the collector dimensions of (L = 1.8 m, W = 0.7 m, Hch = 0.07 m) which are the best design. The numerical results show that the SAH with Al2O3-paraffin wax have the thermal efficiency ranged between 73 % and 78 % with air temperature difference from 25 °C to 46.6 °C when the solar irradiance of 1000 W/m2 at the air mass flow rates of 0.03 kg/s and 0.06 kg/s, respectively. The experimental setup is constructed using these optimum dimensions for each configuration and validated using the numerical results. All configurations are fabricated and tested outdoor under the Iraq climatic conditions according to ASHRAE standard tests at different air mass flow rates. The two steps method is used to prepare the mixture of nanoparticles with PCM and ultrasonic device is used to suspend the nanoparticles in the PCM. The experimental results show that the SAH with Al2O3-paraffin wax has the highest daily performance and thermal efficiency followed by SAH with pure paraffin wax and SAH without storage. Moreover, the discharging time in the SAH with pure paraffin wax of heat stored took 5.5, 5, 4.5 and 4 hours at the air mass flow rate 0.03, 0.04, 0.05 and 0.06 kg/s, respectively. As for the SAH with Al2O3-paraffin
`
vi
wax, the discharge time are 5, 4.5, 4 and 3.5 hours at the air mass flow rates of 0.03, 0.04, 0.05 and 0.06 kg/s, respectively. The experimental results also show that increment in the thermal conductivity of PCM with the dispersion 1wt. % Al2O3 which led to raise the outlet air temperature and thermal efficiency of the SAH compared to SAH with pure paraffin wax. In addition, good agreement are obtained when comparing between the numerical and experimental results. It was the average differences in percentage on outlet air temperatures obtained in the numerical and experimental results from 2.11 % to 2.47 % and on the thermal efficiency from 2.70% to 3.50 %, respectively.

▼ Modern man’s addiction to fossil fuels or non-renewable
energy is the key reason behind the unprecedented economic growth
experienced globally over the past 100 years. However, by
definition these energy resources are not only finite, but their
widespread use is causing massive environmental damage through air
pollution and its associated impact on people’s health, as well as
the emission of greenhouse gases which are attributed to the
unprecedented rate of global warming - And it is for this reason
that international initiatives such as the Kyoto Protocol, (which
South Africa is a signatory of), aim to mitigate global warming by
reducing member countries’ CO2 emissions.Simultaneously, South
Africa (SA) is experiencing its own electricity supply problems due
to under investment in the sector. While new power plants are being
built, they utilize non-renewable energy
sources and will take time
to build (up to 5 years). It is also important to note that due to
large coal reserves, South Africans enjoy amongst the lowest
electricity tariffs in the world, but SA is amongst this planet’s
biggest per capita polluters. The research thus aims to identify
whether high income households are wasteful users of electricity -
due to historic low prices, lack of knowledge regarding energy
efficiency and the impact that electricity generation has on the
environment - while at the same time determining the group's
perception of domestic solar water heaters (DSWH), given our
country’s favourable climaticconditions.

▼ The study aims to examine the practice of source and story selection in
Ethiopian Television (ETV). The study thus explores the dominant
sources used
within ETV news to see whose views are reflected most in the news and how
these
sources become frequently used by journalists in the news. The study
also examines criteria for selecting stories at ETV. The nature of methodology
employed in this study is qualitative. In-depth interviews with key informants
and content analysis were used as techniques to gather data.
Some 503 television news stories were collected between 1 May 2006 and 30
May 2006. Key informant interviews were also conducted with media
practitioners who are responsible for news production. Results showed that
government
sources were used as major information providers in 73.4 % of the
stories, and government officials were visible in 54.3 % of the stories. The
interpretation drawn from these results is that government voices are preferred
for news stories, with representatives from other sections of society being given
less chance to express their perspectives.
The thesis concludes that that political power is a major source consideration at
ETV. The powerful decision-makers at the editorial conference, gatekeepers of
the final product, are inevitably members of or sympathetic to the ruling party.
With regard to criteria for news selection, issues that deal with development are
given priority, and portraying the government positively is also an important
criterion for choosing stories. The findings also show that there are both
internal and external pressures affecting journalistic decisions, often forcing
journalists to practice self-censorship in order to depict the ruling party
positively and omit facts that are offensive to the ruling party.
The thesis concludes that different sections of society are not able to
communicate their perspectives on ETV since the organization serves as a
conduit for government policy messages instead of regularly entertaining
diversified views.

▼ About half of the global population and over 70% of countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa rely on
biomass fuel as a source of household energy. Over 95% of households in Ethiopia use biomass
fuel for cooking. Despite the prevailing major concerns among policy makers and professionals
on air pollution, the magnitude of air pollution from domestic and traffic
sources in Ethiopia is
not well established.
Objectives
This thesis attempted to examine the magnitude of air pollution by measuring 24-hr
concentrations of indoor nitrogen dioxide in rural Butajira and daily measurement of ambient
carbon monoxide in traffic congested areas of Addis Ababa.
Materials and Methods
A longitudinal study was conducted to assess the indoor air pollution component between March
2000 and April 2002. Concentrations of NO2 were measured cross-sectionally at about threemonth
interval using a modified Willems badge air samplers. Mothers of children in households
were interviewed within 24 hours of air sampling about characteristics of fire use, type of fuel
and cooking pattern. A Saltzman colorimetric method using a spectrometer calibrated at 540 nm
was used to analyze the mass of NO2 in field samples.
Roadside traffic air pollution was assessed using portable CO USB data loggers. CO monitor is
small electronic equipment installed along 40 roadside sampling points to continuously measure
and record CO concentrations at an average interval of 10 seconds for about 10 hours in the
daytime. Four on-road traffic light posts were also included to explore the association with the
results of roadside CO concentrations. Data were entered and analyzed using EPI INFO version
6.02 statistical software. SPSS version 15.0 was further used to run regression analysis. Data
from CO logger were downloaded in Excel format. Summary statistics, graphs, charts, and tables
were the main tools used to present findings. One-way ANOVA, multiple regression analysis
and linear mixed model analysis were also used to sort out any non-random differences in NO2
and factors affecting the levels of NO2.
viii
Results
Wood, crop residues and animal dung were the main fuels in rural households in the study area.
The mean 24-hr concentration of NO2 was 97.3 μg/m3 (95% CI: 95.9, 98.6). The median (IQR)
was 68.4 (98.7) μg/m3. Ecology and season have shown differences in the mean concentration of
NO2. Households in the highland areas and during wet season had higher indoor NO2
concentration. Biomass fuel type, ecology, purpose of fire use, cooking of at least one type of
food in a day, and frequency of fire use were important household variables to explain the
variations in the daily NO2 concentration. While ecology was the major predictor, housing
physical structures showed little influence on the variation of indoor NO2.
In Addis Ababa, the 15-minute mean (+SD) CO concentrations were 2.03 (1.94) and 2.64 (2.53)
ppm respectively observed during the wet and dry seasons of 2007 and 2008. The two means did
not vary significantly. There were…

▼ Economies aim to expand over time, which always implies the need for increased energy availability in support of this growth. Governments can use their procurement of energy generation to further enhance the benefit to their economies via certain policy tools. One such tool is Local Content Requirements (LCR) where procurement of a good dictates that a certain value has to be sourced locally. The argument for this tool is that spend is localised and manufacturing, as well as job creation, can be stimulated due to industry establishing in the host economy. However, this practice is distortionary in effect and it does not create a fair playing field for global trade. Furthermore, if the local content definition is weak, or open to manipulation, the goals of such a policy may not be achieved at all. This study looked into the local content requirements of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and measured the impact of this policy on the renewable energy sector in general. It was found that, in order to implement a policy such as local content, the host economy had to have certain pre-existing conditions in order to avoid any negative welfare effects. Due to SA not holding all supportive pre-conditions for supporting local content policy, the impact and effect of LCRs has not been optimal and it has not been found to be a sustainable mechanism to continue using into the future indefinitely. The pricing of renewable energy was also found to be higher due to local content and such pricing is passed on to the energy consumer. Therefore, the net welfare impact created for South Africa is diminished in exchange for the creation of jobs and manufacturing, but due to the unsustainability and potential manipulation of the system the country is not maximising the welfare potential from the REIPPPP as it should. It was found that SA renewable energy resources do exist and the logistics infrastructure is strong, providing good potential for investment into renewable energy projects. The demand created by the REIPPPP provided a good market, but there was uncertainty in the long term planning and stability. So, from a market perspective this could be further enhanced. Government had created a sufficient platform for investment, but areas of development such as clusters, R&D and skills training would create a better support environment for LCR policy and strict monitoring of this would also be required to prevent any manipulation. The use of LCRs increases project costs and risk, which is passed onto the energy consumers, but this could be reduced if local goods were more readily available at the right price and at the right quality and quantity. Focus on clusters would once again assist in this regard as independent power producers (IPPs) and engineering procurement and construction (EPC) entities would be able to source components and goods locally in a more cost-effective manner. As the LCRs currently stand in the REIPPPP, it would seem that South Africa is making renewable…

▼ Organic Rankine cycles (ORC) have unique properties that are well suited to power generation from low grade heat sources. It is envisaged that a domestic scale ORC Heat Engine can be developed that will be able to run off heat stored in a solar charged rock thermal battery. The use of a thermal battery as the heat source for the ORC system will provide the user with electricity during the day and for a number of hours into the night. The concept presented consists of four key components: rock thermal battery, 1 kW scroll expander, condenser and working fluid pump.
