▼ The purpose of this project is to look for traces of inquisitorial ideology as well as resistance to the Inquisition itself in theological texts by two subaltern writers in colonial Mexico: Luis de Carvajal as a crypto-Jew in a Catholic empire, and Sor Juana as a woman theologian in a male-dominated church. In the first chapter, I give a brief overview of the history of medieval Inquisitions, through the founding of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478, the reasons the Spanish Inquisition came to Latin America, and the goals of the Inquisition in Mexico. In chapter two, I explore the concept of an inquisitorial literary analysis, as well as controversies in Inquisition scholarship. I also analyze “El sacrificio de Isaac,” a play written by an anonymous Franciscan in 1540 in an effort to evangelize the indigenous population of Tlaxcala, and which demonstrates an inquisitorial ideology. In chapter three, I examine the writings of Luis de Carvajal, a crypto-Jew who was executed by the Inquisition in 1595. Memorias, the letters of Luis de Carvajal, and his Testamento all show traces of inquisitorial ideology. Nonetheless, Carvajal manages to interpellate his inquisitors by reversing their own ideological tropes. Carvajal resists the Mexican Inquisition through his discursive strategies. In chapter four, I examine Crisis de un sermón by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, which is the text that provoked La carta de Sor Filotea de la Cruz and Sor Juana’s Respuesta a Sor Filotea. One can see inquisitorial traces in Crisis de un sermón. In this text God is shown as jealous and does not permit competition, people are weak and sinful, there are performative aspects in God’s examples, and punishment is a means of saving souls. Also, intentions are more important than acts. The texts examined here, especially Crisis de un sermón, demonstrate not only that Sor Juana thoroughly understood inquisitorial theology, but that she also possessed a clearly articulated fear of that institution. The Inquisition was an important subtext in the works of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Advisors/Committee Members: Costigan, Lucia (Advisor).

▼ The scientific reality of the 17th century in Nueva España is an arrow targeting the glimmer of the Baroque art produced in Mexico in the 1600s. In this cultural scene non religious books circulate as well as the ideas/theses/treatises of the men of science such as Nicolau Copérnico (1473-1543), Johannes Kepler (1574-1630), Atanasius Kircher (1601-1680), Juan Caramuel (1606 - 1682) and Sebastián Izquierdo (1601-1681).The 17th century’s baroque in America assimilates this scientific reality and reverberates its various forms of artistic representation by means of luxurious monuments in the form of experimental poetry. Neptuno Alegórico – the architectural laudatory, the prose, the emblematic description, the poetry, the prince’s mirror – is tuned into this neo-hispanic scientific-cultural discourse that overcomes utilitarian, geographical and temporal frontiers. In order to offer a reading of Neptuno Alegórico, this research is founded upon three investigative theoretical frameworks that observe the work in its varied forms of writing and aesthetics.The first of these grasps the baroque and its theories/researches from the earliest ones like in Heirich Wölfflin (1888) to the most contemporary like in José Antonio Maravall (1997), Severo Sarduy (1989), Eugênio d’Ors (1990), Gilles Deleuze (1991), Lezama Lima (1988), Walter Benjamin (1984) and Fernando Rodríguez de la Flor (2002) in order to locate them near the experimental-scientific baroque poetics of the erudite nun in the America of the Golden Century; the second line of theory aims at perceiving the emblematics in Neptuno Alegórico stemming from the ideas of Andrea Alciato (1531) and his contemporary revisiting by means of the studies by Mário Praz (1963) and again by Fernando Rodríguez de la Flor (1995), so as to achieve an emblematic reading of the artistic descriptions in the canvases/paintings/lienzos elaborated by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz; last but not least a third framework that points to understanding the work Neptuno Alegórico as it nears the mathematical combinatory investigation of Sebastián Izquierdo (1659) inserting it in other contemporary scholarly works that deal with art and science. ▼ Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648?-1695) constituye una de las personalidades más singulares y controvertidas del Barroco novohispano por lo que se ha visto sometida a los diversos vaivenes de la crítica. El presente trabajo pretende atender una de las piezas fundamentales de su producción, el Primero sueño, poema oscuro en su forma que encierra una multiplicidad de significados no suficientemente atendidos por los investigadores. Además de realizar una exégesis del mismo lo ponemos en relación con otras obras de la poetisa para poder descifrarlo de una forma cabal, atendiendo principalmente a las implicaciones epistemológicas que encierra. Situado el marco histórico de la Nueva España, nos detenemos a reconstruir la imagen que trata de proyectar de sí misma la poetisa a través de su obra completa, siendo consciente de su situación marginal y excepcional. Fruto de esa excepcionalidad se plantearán conflictos como los plasmados en la Carta de Monterrey, que será analizada tanto en lo concerniente a su estructura, como a las estrategias discursivas que plantea para salvaguardar la posición arriesgada en que se encuentra la poetisa frente a estamentos de poder tales como su confesor. Primero sueño se inserta en una tradición cultural acerca de lo onírico que es trazada desde la antigüedad hasta el Siglo de Oro. Centrados ya en este periodo, nos detenemos en la visión del cosmos, atendiendo al paso dado desde corrientes en que predominaban elementos herméticos hasta la ciencia nueva que inaugurarán Descartes, Galileo, etc. Proseguimos con la exposición del contexto cultural en que surge el poema, así como su génesis y estructura, para finalizar con las fuentes filosóficas de las que se nutre el mismo y una exégesis detallada y clarificadora. Sor Juana Inés se ve inserta en una polémica textual que pone en peligro tanto su condición anómala, pero tolerada, como su labor intelectual. Ésta se inaugura con la Carta athenagórica, texto que constituye una crítica del Sermón del Mandato, predicado por el jesuita portugués Antonio Vieira. Para poder comprenderlo procedemos a exponer la figura y el pensamiento del sacerdote luso, situando en su contexto dicho sermón. A continuación procedemos a la exposición de la crítica de Sor Juana plasmada en la Athenagórica, clarificando las consecuencias últimas de la argumentación que desarrolla y que tendrán repercusiones en la vida de la poetisa. Llegada azarosamente esta obra a las manos del obispo poblano Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz, es editada por él mismo, quien la prologa con una carta que firma bajo la máscara de Sor Filotea, en la que, si bien alaba la obra de la poetisa, la aboca a una exposición pública que le acarreará no pocas críticas, aunque también encaminaba su labor hacia fines más altos. ▼ This thesis is the first book-length study of the three autos sacramentales by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Sor Juana’s religious drama has received little attention, despite her status as one of the greatest figures of Mexican literature. She was also writing during a particularly significant period in Hispanic literary history: at the end of the Spanish Golden Age, and at the rise of a new class of intellectual élites in the New World, the criollos. I contend that Sor Juana’s autos sacramentales are crucial to understanding how she contributed to the formation of a criollo identity. In doing so, she engaged with the mentalities of two continents and two historical periods: Europe and the Americas, and the Baroque and the Enlightenment. To demonstrate this, I provide a study of each of Sor Juana’s sacramental plays, alongside the loa which was written to accompany them. My method combines close-text reading with a historical approach, and I pay particular attention to the theological function of the plays. In each chapter, I focus on the concurrent strands of thought in her works. I consider how the plays demonstrate the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, and how they engage with the aesthetic and theological mindset of the Spanish Baroque. I study how they incorporate indigenous Nahuatl theatrical traditions, and ask how they engage with the scientific developments of the Enlightenment. I conclude that in her autos sacramentales Sor Juana expresses a mindset that is both geographically and historically “between two worlds.” The influence of Nahuatl theatre on Sor Juana’s dramaturgy has never before been studied. The influence of Enlightenment thought on her works has been noted by a few scholars, but never considered in relation to her religious works. The demonstration of the interaction of Enlightenment and Catholic ideas challenges our notion of the Enlightenment as a secularising movement, and has potential implications for scholars of the period beyond the sphere of Sor Juana studies.

O objetivo desta pesquisa é identificar e relacionar as diversas invocações e características de Maria na obra de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a partir dos aspectos teológicos mais tradicionais atribuídos à Virgem. Nascida em São Miguel de Nepantla em 1651, por volta dos dezenove anos deixou a proteção da corte e optou por professar na Ordem das Jerônimas, onde produziu a maior parte da sua obra literária em prosa, verso, teatro, romances, sonetos, poesia amorosa, villancicos, cartas, escritos filosóficos e teológicos. Escreveu poemas latinos, castelhanos, na língua mexicana e em diversos dialetos daquela região. Ousou discutir e reivindicar para as mulheres da sua época, o direito aos estudos e ao conhecimento. A propósito, seus conhecimentos nas mais diversas áreas da ciência foram considerados extraordinários para a ocasião. Chegou a contestar, por escrito, o Sermão do Mandato do padre jesuíta Antonio Vieira, com sérias repercussões e desdobramentos naquele momento, mas cuja discussão sobre o assunto se estende até os dias de hoje. A partir destas observações iniciais, passamos a examinar como Sor Juana teria representado algumas noções da figura de Maria, especialmente nos seus villancicos em honra da Conceição e Assunção de Nossa Senhora e em parte dos seus escritos em prosa, de como articulou estas noções em um determinado tipo de narrativa que, por vezes, tende a adquirir um sentido próprio. A intenção é analisar as relações entre tais narrativas e o contexto vivido pela religiosa, contexto esse que entendemos como fortemente moldado pela fé cristã, mas também por discussões, crenças, desafios teológicos, literários e políticos. Para tanto, o presente estudo pretende integrar à teologia, diferentes áreas como a Hstória, a Filosofia e a Literatura Barroca da Nova Espanha. Com esse exercício, pretendemos contribuir, trazendo para o debate um tema e uma época importante para os primórdios da história da Igreja no México do século XVII, além de acrescentar um nome feminino ao período da Escolástica Colonial da América Latina.

The objective of this research is to identify and relate the various references and features of Mary in the work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, from the more traditional theological aspects attributed to the Virgin. Born in San Miguel de Nepantla in 1651. At the age of nineteen she left the court's protection and opted to profess the Order of Jeronimas, where she produced most of her literary work in prose, verse, theater, novels, sonnets, love poetry, carols,letters, philosophical and theological writings. She wrote latin and castilian poems in the mexican language and in several dialects of the region. Maria clared to discuss and claim for the women of her time, the right to study and knowledge. ▼ This dissertation explores pictorial and poetic representations of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint Bartholomew mostly from 16th to 18th century New Granada and New Spain. The dissertation proposes that despite the overt religious agenda intrinsically conveyed in these hagiographic representations, they can be read also as historical testimonies of resistance and (anti)imperial sentiments that reflect the ontological anxieties and fragmented identities of colonial subjects regarding their ethnic, cultural, and gender diversity. The main literary objects of study comprise carols from the Colonial Musical Archives of Bogotá's Cathedral, carols by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Fernán González de Eslava, Colombian popular ballads, and a sonnet by Francisco Álvarez de Velasco y Zorrilla, among other poetic works. Pictorially, this thesis explores colonial representations of the saints mentioned above, from the New Kingdom of Granada, New Spain, Bolivia, and some of their respective European antecedents. It takes a post-colonial approach, grounded primarily on Homi Bhabha's notions of "in-between," "double vision," and "hybridity" to explain the cultural position from which colonial Hispanic American discourses enunciate their world-views, and the differences between such a position and that from which hegemonic discourses of empire are issued. In conclusion, this study shows how hagiographies in colonial Hispanic America do not efface religious and social paradigms from Europe altogether, but incorporate local outlooks and traditions into dominant discourses, destabilizing them, vindicating the authority of "otherness," and reinforcing alternative notions of collective and individual selfhood in the construction of Hispanic American identity. During the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, both in the Old and the New World, the patriarchal social structure had created a set of fixed gender rules based on gender roles to control female sexuality, female voices, and their social freedom because it was considered a threat to male superiority. The Venetian Veronica Franco and the Mexican Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz are two extraordinary women from different places and a hundred years apart who, with their elaborated writing and body-related techniques, escape the gender patriarchal constrains and give voice to their new authorial persona in a female liminal environment. Veronica Franco and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz represent the two facets of the same coin that symbolizes the phallocentric patriarchal structure in which these two women happened to live, struggle, and write. These women were pushed to the margins of society, confined in convents, brothels/patrician houses, or the streets, to silence their personae and reinforce their inferiority and, at times, inexistence. There are no works that focus on the comparison between the well-known Mexican nun and the forgotten Venetian courtesan. Therefore, this dissertation aims to analyze the writings of Veronica Franco and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz through the lens of feminist theory (Cixous, Irigaray etc.) and the concept of the body as an instrument of subversion and female liberation. In their respective time and marginal places of confinement (the patrician house and the convent), both women were able to create a liminal space that allowed them to go beyond the rigidity of gender binaries and explore different venues of freedom. In this liminal space both Veronica Franco and Sor Juana stopped “performing” the fixed gender roles imposed by the patriarchal social order and created new female creatures at the margins of patriarchal society; a new type of woman who could, through her body and writing, destabilize the patriarchal gender identities and go from a passive silence object to an active writing subject.

▼ This dissertation follows the thread of commerse, class and money from a transatlantic perspective between the 17th and 18th centuries, in order to reread, under this particular focus, the transition between 19th century Modernismo and its decline at the rise of the novel of the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century. There is a tight correlation between the construction of a Latin American literary social imaginary and the mythologies of wealth and spending. The Mexican baroque poet Juana Inés de la Cruz represents erotic relationships using the language of banking; the Jesuit historians of the Latin American 18th century, as well as the next generation of founding fathers of the region, seeded the idea of dismantling the Spanish Empire in the necessity of commercial freedom and proper exploitation of the land's wealth. In times of the early Latin American Republics, authors as distant from each other as Manuel Antonio Carreño -a 19th Century Venezuelan who wrote the essential Latin American Manual of Good Manners- or the Mexican poet Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera, dedicated their works to illustrating the ways of the new, proud middle classes. Rubén Darío, the Nicaraguan modernist, represented himself in one of his most honest autobiographical poems as a debauched member of that same middle class -a topic that later recurs in the novels about the Mexican Revolution that are set in Mexico City. They all talk about money and class in search of a definition of their peculiarity as Latin Americans; they all show their administrative skills -or their lack of them- as an essential tool for constructing the written page, and with it, the future of their nations. These texts, when read together as a historically coherent "secondary corpus," produce a clear idea of the configuration of the Latin American literary taste as phenomenon deeply rooted in a commercial impulse, and the discourses they developed ultimately produced an "aesthetics of aspiration": the peculiar literary taste which pivoted the poetic explosion of Latin American Modernismo. ▼ The theme that underlies the thesis is the challenge presented by science, as it developed from the time of the Enlightenment through the centuries until the present day, to Christian theology. The consequent conflict of ideas is traced in respect of biological science and the traditions of Protestant Christian doctrine, together with the advances of the developing discipline of prehistoric archaeology since the early nineteenth century. The common ground from which disagreement stemmed was the existence of human beings and the uniqueness of the human species as a group amongst all other creatures. With the conflict arising from this challenge, centring on the origin and history of human uniqueness, a rift became established between the disciplines which widened as they progressed through to the twentieth century. It is this separation that the thesis takes up and endeavours to analyse in the light of the influence of advancing science on the blending of philosophical scientific ideas with the elements of Christian faith of former centuries. A shift in outlook, sparked off by the presentation by certain theologian-scientists of the concept of healing this rift by way of dialogue, is pin-pointed as a move away from conflict and towards compatibility. The possibility of so doing is considered in depth and extended, by the thesis, to something more than forms of agreement and towards the achieving of integration between theology and science by way of the agency of human uniqueness. This endeavour, requiring a new approach to the conflicting issues, is presented by means of two studies, one scientific and one theological, considered separately but in parallel, of a human issue of relevance to each, in the twenty-first century – that of human individuality. With the outcome of this presentation being found to be agreement amounting to no more than compatibility, the thesis proceeds to find a means of furthering the way towards integration. Disciplines having a close association with the scientific view of the individual human being and the theological concept of human individuality, are brought into the inquiry – archaeology to assist science and philosophy to aid theology, the common ground being specified as the uniqueness of the human individual. A narrative style, maintained throughout, is based on 'key figures' whose work illuminates the issues discussed and is designed to emphasis the central role of the human individual. The thesis is presented as an original contribution to the science versus theology debate, by virtue of its centering not on conflicting issues but on those of common interest. To this end, the employment of associated disciplines, archaeology in particular, has opened up an approach not previously explored. In its conclusion, the thesis makes a claim for the means suggested for integrating science with theology through the concept of human uniqueness, to be recognised as plausible and worthy of being considered in other fields of confrontation between the two disciplines.

▼ Gender, Race, and Science: A Feminista Analysis of Women of Color in Science is a methodological intervention that expands the boundaries of Feminist Science Studies to include the experiences of women of color scientists and to continue the resistance against persistent racialized gender ideologies within the field. In this dissertation, I propose a revision of the field I call "Feminista Science Studies." In the introduction, I map out a methodology which integrates decolonial historical case study methodology, feminist cultural and spatial studies, and US Third World feminist theories. I then apply my Feminista analytic to three cases. In each case, I use María Lugones' theory of fragmentation, multiplicity, and curdling to analyze the relationship between the socially marked bodies of women of color scientists to the epistemological paradigms in which they worked. The first case, on zoologist Roger Arliner Young (1899-1964), uses intersectionality and queer of color theory to push beyond the single-axis accounts by situating Young's individual experience in the context of the US Eugenics movement and Jim Crow segregation. In the second case, I argue that physicist Chien-Shiung Wu's (1912-1997) research threatened foundational values within Modern Science and, magnified by Cold War era anxieties, her exoticized Asian female body was perceived as disruptive to the militarized space of the nuclear laboratory. In my third case, I use border theory to analyze how Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695) laid claim to the right to produce knowledge about nature, as a woman, by articulating an epistemology of mestizaje. In the conclusion, I make three claims based on these cases: 1) Women of color are positioned in opposition to modern Western science through the association of their bodies with a primitive and wild form of nature in our cultural scientific imaginary. 2) The strategies employed by these women of color for survival and success in science represent a form of oppositional differential consciousness in the service of scientific knowledge production. 3) The epistemological paradigms in which these women operated shape their experience by regulating their ability to conform and resist the social norms of science. ▼ This dissertation addresses the question of how the German versions of Primero sueño and Respuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz affected the reception of these two major works of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Whereas the first part provides a brief summary of the state of research and the main lines of investigation in the international academic world, as well as an overview of the critical tradition in the German speaking countries surrounding the writings of this distinguished author of the Spanish Golden Age, the second part focuses on the analysis of the translations as such, by examining how the different translators tried to imitate the idiosyncratic style of the well-known letter, and what techniques they used in order to transmit the metaphors, the similes, the allegories and the basic semantic fields—such as colours, sounds or “scientific” terms—, which constitute the unique character of the famous silva. Moreover, it explores how the forewords, the epilogues and the explanatory notes included in the German editions, along with the newspaper and journal articles, intended to spread them among the non-specialized German speaking readers, impacted the reception of this central figure of Hispanic baroque literature in the above mentioned regions. Drawing on the results obtained in the analytical section of this research, in the concluding chapter it will be discussed to what extent the different German versions may be considered as manipulations or if some of them can even be qualified as the so-called belles infidèles, which enjoyed a great popularity in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. For this purpose, it will be inquired in what way the translated texts seem to have been accommodated to the horizon of expectations—in the terminology of Hans-Robert Jauss—to the respective readership. The study concludes with an own translation of the loa for the auto sacramental El divino Narciso, preceded by an explanation of the applied translation method, a short introduction to this dramatic tradition and some guidance notes which would be included in a separate edition. ▼ Este estudio se centra en las vidas de cinco mujeres mexicanas—Malintzin, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Leona Vicario, Rosario Castellanos y Julieta Venegas—de cinco etapas históricas diferentes de México—la Conquista, el Virreinato de Nueva España, la lucha por la independencia, la modernidad y lo contemporáneo—al estudiar el uso que cada figura hace de su “Voz” según la época. Empieza presentando y descomponiendo el concepto de “malinchismo” revisando los detalles reconocidos de la vida de Malintzin/doña Marina/la Malinche. Después, continúa con un resumen de ciertos aspectos interesantes de las vidas de cada figura, empezando con Sor Juana y concluyendo con Julieta Venegas. En cada capítulo hay un análisis del uso de la Voz por medio de obras asociadas con cada figura. En cuanto a Malintzin, es necesario revisar las crónicas en las que ella aparece como protagonista. En el capítulo de Sor Juana, analizo principalmente los villancicos escritos para la celebración de la Asunción de 1676 y su defensa personal, la “Respuesta de la poetisa a Sor Filotea de la Cruz”. Al estudiar a Leona Vicario, comento ciertos datos de la biografía escrita por Genaro García en 1910, quizás la biografía más completa de la heroína hasta el día de hoy, y luego incorporo comunicados escritos por la misma Leona Vicario. Para Rosario Castellanos, he escogido el cuento “Lección de cocina,” el ensayo “Y las madres, ¿qué opinan?” y la obra de teatro El eterno femenino. Luego, para terminar el estudio, analizo la letra de las canciones compuestas por Julieta Venegas, además de su uso de la voz y su imagen pública por medio de entrevistas. This study focuses on the life of five Mexican women—Malintzin, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Leona Vicario, Rosario Castellanos y Julieta Venegas—from five time periods of Mexican History—la Conquista, el Virreinato de Nueva España, la lucha por la independencia, la modernidad y lo contemporáneo—in order to study the use of "Voice" by each subject in relation to their respective time periods. It begins by presenting the concepts of "Malinchismo" y "Marianismo," revisiting the recorded details of the life of Malintzin/doña Marina/la Malinche. Then it continues with a summary of certain interesting aspects of the lives of each of the selected subjects, from Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to the contemporary singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas. In each chapter there is an analysis of the use of "Voice" by means of works associated with each subject. In connection with Malintzin, it is necessary to review the chronicles in which the young indigenous translator appears as a protagonist. In the chapter about Sor Juana, the analysis centers around the villancicos written to celebrate "la Asunción de 1676" and the personal defense written by Sor Juana, "La Respuesta de la poetisa a Sor Filotea de la Cruz." Considerando la hibridez y la diversidad de este fenómeno, se ha decidido seguir parcialmente los estudios de Louis-Vincent Thomas quien, en su libro Antropología de la muerte, analiza conceptos, visiones, divergencias y comportamientos del ser humano ante este acontecimiento. Tras presentar la concepción de la muerte europea y española para entender, en un segundo momento, la referida a las épocas de la Conquista y de la colonia, la tesis se ha dividido en tres apartados cuyo objetivo es, respectivamente, ahondar la muerte «física» de un individuo (por ejemplo: torturas, vejaciones, violencia bélica, condenas, espectáculo público de la misma, enfermedades, crisis agrícolas, calamidades naturales o tratamiento del cadáver); la «religiosa» relacionada más bien con la concepción de la muerte así como los vínculos que los fieles establecían con la propia divinidad; finalmente, la «cultural» que analiza la muerte de las culturas y las representaciones de la muerte en la cultura novohispana. Considerando la hibridez del fenómeno, el objetivo de esta división es ilustrar de manera sistemática, y en toda su pluralidad y riqueza, este fenómeno durante la época colonial. Cada sección está ejemplificada por las varias «muertes» de sor Juana Inés de la Cruz: desde el análisis de su defunción hasta las excavaciones que se realizaron en el ex convento de San Jerónimo entre finales de los años 70 y comienzos de los 80; la redacción de su testamento; su profesión de votos; las posibles mortificaciones corporales; sus versos en ocasión de la muerte de personajes prestigiosos y su ser mujer dentro de la sociedad novohispana entre censuras y restricciones (corporales, sexuales, entre otras) misóginas sufridas a causa del control de su mismo confesor. En la última parte de la tesis, retomando el encuentro entre conquistador y conquistado, se ha intentado profundizar la muerte «indígena» según su misma visión y reinterpretación, evocando la heterogeneidad y la pluralidad de los mitos y los ritos aún vigentes en el contexto en el que nació y se crió. Siguiendo una metodología interdisciplinar, los escritos de la autora, de manera particular las loas para los autos sacramentales de El divino Narciso y El Cetro de José, se toman como un punto de partida documental que permiten desentrañar las caras híbridas y polimorfas de la muerte prehispánica y novohispana. Sus palabras desenterraron entonces mitos y ritos, creencias y costumbres, prácticas mortuorias y funerarias y conformaron un particular sincretismo religioso. ▼ This thesis addresses the epistolary work by Novo-Hispanic writer Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to place it in the literary and discursive context of the end of the 17th Century. I will take as theoretical background the concepts of dialogism and the carnivalesque by Mikhail Bakhtin, as well as Michel De Certeau’s reflections on what he calls the practice of everyday life. Other aspects of my theoretical approach will be drawn from Michel Foucault’s concepts in The Archaeology of Knowledge; his ideas about power, knowledge and social control, which will be useful for contextually addressing Sor Juana’s work and that of her intellectual contemporaries. Particularly, I will analyse the circumstances in which these Novo-Hispanic discourses were produced. This contextualization will allow me to incorporate not only the cultural (everyday life) practices that surround the production of these texts, but also other less notable or unpublished documents written by some of Sor Juana’s contemporaries. My aim is to widen the discursive spectrum of authors and critics of the prose of this author, and to this end I make use of documents from the 17th Century as primary source. This thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first, I will place into context the Novo-Hispanic discourse and the generic forms of the time: sermon, satire, libel, letter and inquisitorial censure, and the function of ideological control exerted by the Novo-Hispanic Holy Office. In the second chapter I will make a textual and contextual revision of three epistolary documents by Sor Juana: Carta al Padre Nuñez (Letter to Father Nuñez, 1682), Carta Atenagórica (Letter Worthy of Athena, 1690) and Respuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz (Reply to Sor Filotea of the Cross, 1690); as well as the antecedents, development and the result of the critical-theological conflict caused by these private letters, their replies and other collateral documents, namely, Carta de Serafina de Cristo, and Carta de Filotea de la Cruz (1690). Both drafts of these letters, found in Puebla in 2010, will also be refered in this revision. In addition to this I will study Defensa del Sermón del Mandato (1691) and Discurso Apologético contra la Fe de Erratas de un Soldado Castellano (1691), documents found in Lima in 2002 and published in Mexico in 2004. The third chapter consists of the study of three contemporary preachers of Sor Juana: Francisco Xavier Palavicino Villarrasa, Pedro Muñoz de Castro and Pedro de Avendaño Suárez de Sousa, whose theological and literary activities were denounced by the Holy Office. My aim is to show the reach of inquisitorial control and its consequence on the writing and literary activities of the contemporary intellectuals of Sor Juana, to contextualize Sor Juana’s epistolary work and confront the possible isolation and singularization that may place her life and work apart from the kernel of the intellectual scene in the New Spain at the close of the 17th Century.

▼ John Paul II’s theological anthropology, the Theology of the Body, seeks to articulate how the experience of being loved and of loving is foundational to a person’s realising selfhood and meaning. John Paul’s particular phenomenological focus is upon the love manifest in spousal relationships, including their sexual aspect. The task he sets himself is to articulate how spousal love and the human body mutually disclose each other and point to God. John Paul’s hermeneutical task is to ‘re-read the language of the body in truth.’ He begins by giving an extended interpretation of the Genesis creation narratives then applies the truths he finds they disclose (the person as made for love, as gifted, as sacramental sign) to a theological interpretation of the living and embodied person. This thesis considers John Paul’s findings in the context of select contemporary theologians similarly interested in the body and in language. In line with some key suppositions of John Paul’s methodology, metaphor (and poetics more generally) is held to be strongly present in the material world, including in acts of thinking, communicating, and interpreting. Following John Paul’s phenomenological method, this thesis applies and extends it in two ways. Firstly, by looking at how literary texts (particular phenomena experienced in the mind and the body) and the body (as that through which one encounters all phenomena) can be read as mutually disclosive ‘texts,’ each of which is truth-bearing. To that end, a number of late twentieth-century poems whose subjects deal in some way with the maternal figure of Mary are read as linguistic embodiments of the human through which truths about what it is to be human are evoked. Secondly, this thesis reads the poetics of the maternal ‘obstetric’ body, through the lens of the Virgin Mary, thereby extending John Paul’s anthropological findings to a new subject. Integrating the Virgin Mary within theological anthropology opens the way for a new, somatically-grounded Mariology.

On an everyday basis, employees may be subjected to low intensity negative behaviours from those they work with. Uncivil behaviours may cumulatively add up over time to have detrimental effects on employees’ wellbeing and commitment to stay with their organisation. Since most of the research has been cross-sectional, capturing a snapshot in time, knowledge regarding the day-to-day effects of experiencing workplace incivility is limited The broad aim of the present research was to develop a new data collection tool in the form of a digital diary Smartphone app, to explore these day-to-day effects, measuring face-to-face and online workplace incivility. Three studies were conducted to develop and test the app. The first pilot study sought to test the proposed measures for use in the app. In particular, the commonly used Workplace Incivility Scale (WIS) was adapted to apply to online as well as face-to-face interactions. Statistical analysis of this pilot confirmed that both the face-to-face and online versions of the WIS were reliable and valid, and determined that experiencing workplace incivility via both modes was significantly associated with emotional exhaustion, and intentions to quit. On the basis of the first pilot, the app was developed and its feasibility tested in a second pilot focusing on the usability of the new app, which resulted in minor design changes being implemented prior to the final launch. The main research study sought to validate the new app and test a series of hypotheses about the day-to-day effects of workplace incivility. Participants completed an initial web-based survey and were then instructed to complete the questions on the app for one month. Multilevel analyses revealed that employees experienced higher levels of emotional exhaustion, and intention to quit on days when they were exposed to face-to-face or online incivility. The amount of incivility that participants experience on a day-to-day basis (Level 1) predicts emotional exhaustion, and intention to quit on a daily basis, and the average amount of incivility (Level 2) that participants experience also predicts their emotional exhaustion, and intention to quit when not considering other factors. Anger and fear were found to mediate the relationship between both forms of incivility and intention to quit. For the rumination-mediated models, the relationship between both forms of workplace incivility and emotional exhaustion is significantly mediated by rumination. Theoretically, this research contributes by providing insight into workplace incivility and its effects on a daily basis. Methodologically, this research advances the field by providing a new reliable and valid repeated measures data collection tool that other researchers may share to overcome and build upon the limitations inherent in cross-sectional studies.
