▼ Advertising is vital to business as it helps to register the business's or events presence to a saturated
market. Advertising has been in existence since 4000 BC. The advertising methods have
revolutionized since the invention of advertising in the marketing mix. There are numerous
advertising methods using different advertising media such as newspapers, radio, television, outdoor
advertising and mobile phones. The choice of the advertising media and method has to be analyzed
critically so as to have high percentage of reach and a good return on investment.
TnKenya, there are 24.9 million mobile phone subscribers representing a penetration of 63.2% for
every 100 inhabitants. Mobile phones by their nature are portable devices. Due to the intimate nature
that people attribute to mobile phones, they can be used by merchants to reach large number of the
population. Mobile phone advertising is not a unique method as merchants have used SMS to send
information and offers regarding their products and services. This research seeks to assess the
viability of context-aware mobile based applications in the Kenyan market and design a prototype
based on the fmdings.
Context-aware mobile advertising involves the provision of location aware advertising messages to
mobile phone subscribers using a defined context. This enables merchants to reach consumers with
highly customized promotions and advertisements, depending on their location which enables
customers to get adverts based on the location they are in and information they prefer.
This research and prototype was used to get the opinion of the merchants and consumers regarding
location aware advertisements. The results demonstrated that context-aware solution is currently not
being extensively used in advertising. It was also established that both advertisers and consumers
were willing to adopt this form of advertising. A number of concerns were raised, the major one
being cost of running the application and consumers privacy.
A prototype was designed to deliver advertisements to consumers based on their proximity to the
business. The prototype was tested and it revealed that since the application was relying on GPS, it
was not convenient as GPS relies on satellites and it is an outdoor system, hence cannot be used
within storey buildings, therefore, there is a need to explore on how to get context using other
technologies such as cell triangulation

▼ Applications of ionic liquids (ILs) require a thorough understanding of the structures and reaction dynamics in these ionic solvents. The current thesis contributes to this understanding through two major projects. The first project examines the bulk structure of ILs and the second involves photo-induced bimolecular electron transfer reactions in IL solvents. In the structure project, we report structural properties for a series of silicon-substituted ionic liquids and some liquid zwitterions, comparing their structures to those of analogous ``simple'' ionic liquids. Structure factors of the liquids were measured using high energy X-ray diffraction and also computed from molecular dynamics simulations. As part of the simulation work, new transferable parameters for specific ILs were calibrated and added to the existing force fields. In the electron transfer project, we systematically studied the bimolecular electron transfer reactions in ILs by measuring reductive fluorescence quenching using steady-state and time-resolved methods. Molecular dynamics simulations and density-functional methods were used to explore solvation structures and electronic couplings between electron donors and acceptors. We suggest that the small-amplitude motions within contact F-Q pairs, which gate the electronic coupling, to be the limiting dynamics of intrinsic bimolecular electron transfer rates in ILs.

▼ Integrability of both sides of AdS/CFT has enabled
many quantitative checks of the correspondence. The Bethe ansatz
determines the anomalous dimensions of gauge theory operators,
which at strong coupling are also encoded in the energies of
classical string configurations. The ``giant magnon'' is a
particular limit that simplifies the spectrum on both sides of the
correspondence. In this limit a general state can have any number
of elementary excitations (magnons) and their bound states. In this
dissertation we construct classical string
solutions describing
arbitrary superpositions of scattering and bound states of
multi-charged giant magnons in various spaces including AdS
5
× S
5 and AdS
4 × CP
3. We use the sigma model
dressing method to construct these
solutions and analyze several of
their properties, such as their scattering phase shift. We also use
the inverse scattering and dressing methods to find various string
solutions in AdS whose edges trace out complicated timelike
curves on boundary. These
solutions correspond to \sinh-Gordon
solitons and breathers and may be used to calculate certain Wilson
loops via AdS/CFT. Our results provide important quantitative
checks of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

This thesis was carried out within Hubert Curien Program (PHC Toubkal). The goal of the project consists in developing efficient coatings for corrosion protection of carbon steel. In this context, a process has been developed which allows to obtain organosilicon coatings from 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDSO) using Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) technique. In this solvent free process, nitrogen plasma gas was used to deposit the thin films. One of the main advantage of plasma processes is the wide range of modifiable parameters that allows to control the characteristics of the growing films. Firstly, an experimental design was used to optimize several experimental parameters such as, deposition time, nitrogen flow rate, oxygen flow rate, monomer flow rate and microwave power. The microstructure, adhesion, thickness, wettability as well as the anticorrosion properties of the organosilicon coatings were characterized using different techniques such as FTIR, solid NMR, SEM, OCP, EIS, ...). Then, the effect of surface pretreatments on the anticorrosion performances of the deposited coatings was studied using amorphous phosphatation, argon plasma (Ar) or nitrogen plasma (N2). The results show that a significant increase in the corrosion protection performance when nitrogen plasma pretreatment is used. EIS…

▼ Since their discovery, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have received increasing attention due to their outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. In particular, research efforts have focused on transferring the properties of single CNT molecules to macroscopic objects that exhibit similar features through controlled processes. The most industrially scalable way to process CNTs is by dispersing/dissolving them into a liquid phase. Chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) has been shown to be a true solvent for CNTs and it is able to spontaneously dissolve CNTs even at high concentrations (few % by mass), allowing the fluid phase processing of CNTs for the production of fibers and films.
Despite many years of research that proved the superior qualities of CSA among other solvents for CNT fluid processing, much remains unknown on the local assembly of CNTs in CSA. In this thesis, we show how small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), combined with supporting polarized optical microscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, can be used to identify the local structure of CNT-CSA
solutions. At very low concentrations, the SANS data show rod-like scattering patterns and confirm the efficacy of CSA as a super solvent for CNTs, whereas at high concentrations, neutron scattering allows for the determination of the local spacing of CNTs in the liquid crystalline phase.
The use of CSA to dissolve CNTs opens a new route for the fabrication of CNT coatings. In this thesis we show how thin conductive CNT films from CSA
solutions can be produced by scalable dip coating. This process is inherently scalable and no damage to the CNTs is induced, therefore, it is able to produce CNT films with excellent electrical properties, among the best in the literature. Dip coating of CNT-CSA solution is also a viable technique to produce the outer conductor of coaxial data cables by directly coating a solution of CNTs in CSA onto the cable inner dielectric. The high conductivity of the CNT coatings makes CNT coaxial cables an attractive alternative to commercial cables with a metal outer conductor, providing comparable cable attenuation, shielding effectiveness, and mechanical durability with a 97 % lower component mass.

▼ Since chemical reactions involving proton transfer as a key mechanism step become prevalent, development of Brønsted bases has been the intense focus in terms of catalyzing proton transfer reactions. Lambert et al. found and confirmed one cyclopropenimine as a strong superbase by measuring its pKa in acetonitrile for the first time. Based on that, we calculated several cyclopropenimine’s proton affinity (PA) which are much higher than all the volatile reference superbases we’ve ever used. It means that if we could obtain those very basic superbases, they would be used as reference bases to bracket PAs of highly basic compounds. Herein, we tried to design and synthesize cyclopropenimine-based superbases and investigated their tunability of PA by modifying various electron withdrawing and donating groups. The corresponding calculation results are consistent with our proposal that cyclopropenimine superbase with EWG decrease PA while EDG increase PA. We also tried to measure PA of one cyclopropenimine superbase that we synthesized by Cooks kinetics method. The other project focuses on a special class of ionic liquid which is known as green solvent with several advantages over traditional organic solvent. This new type of ionic liquid is imidazolium-based ionic liquid with tunable aryl and alkyl substituents which was designed by Strassner et al.. They named this category of ionic liquid as tunable aryl-alkyl ionic liquids (TAAILs). The reason we are interested in them is looking into the correlation between TAAILs’ aqueous property and their theoretical acidity in gas phase and solution. If there was some correlation, we could predict imidazolium compounds’ pKa’s by their gas phase property. Based upon this conjecture, we measured different TAAILs’ acidity by LCQ bracketing method on mass spectrometry, calculated their free energy in solution phase as well as in gas phase and developed two methods to measure their pKa’s in solution. Their acidity results demonstrate that those TAAILs with electron-withdrawing groups on para-position of phenyl substituent have high acidity while other TAAILs with electron-donating para-substituent have low acidity. Besides, I successfully obtained the pKa value of one TAAILs as 25.4 in water via H/D exchange kinetics experiment on NMR.

▼ Ionomers (polymers containing a small amount of ionic groups) are used for various current technologies, such as hydrogen fuel cells, sensors, water purifications, and drug delivery. In addition, ionomers are widely used for solution studies due to their unique behavior and potential application to processing from solution (e.g., membrane fabrication). Recently, ionic liquid was found to be an effective additive (to a low-polarity solvent) to dissolve ionomers, which will be used for processing ionomer films and fibers. Despite the usefulness of the solution study, ionomers used so far are random ionomers in which ionic groups are randomly distributed along the polymer chain and thus data analysis and model calculation become complex. In this study, a monofunctional telechelic ionomer that had an ionic group only at one chain end was used. This made analysis easier and simpler. In this work, viscosity and dynamic light scattering were used to study the effect of ionic liquid on the telechelic ionomers in nonpolar solvent, toluene. In nonpolar solvent, ionic groups formed ion pairs which were attracted each other to form ionic aggregates, resulting in molecular aggregate formation. This was confirmed by an increase in reduced viscosity and effective (hydrodynamic) diameter of the telechelic ionomer
solutions. Upon addition of ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethane sulfonate (EMIM-TF), ionic aggregates were disrupted and the size of molecular aggregates was decreased, approaching to that of nonionic polymer of the same molecular weight.

▼ Most of reports deal with bounded simply-connected domains; only a few involve in exterior and annular problems (Chen et al. [3], Katsuroda[10] and Ushijima and Chibu [30]). For exterior problems of Laplace's equations, there exist two kinds of infinity conditions, (1) |u|≤C and (2) u=O( ln r), which must be complied with by the fundamental
solutions chosen. For u=O(ln r), the traditional fundamental
solutions can be used. However, for |u|≤C, new fundamental
solutions are explored, with a brief error analysis. Numerical experiments are carried out to verify the theoretical analysis made. Numerical experiments are also provided for annular domains, to show that the method of fundamental
solutions (MFS) is inferior to the method of particular
solutions (MPS), in both accuracy and stability. MFS and MPS are classified into the Trefftz method (TM) using fundamental
solutions (FS) and particular
solutions (PS), respectively. The remarkable advantage of MFS over MPS is the uniform ln|overline{PQ
i}|, to lead to simple algorithms and programming, thus to save a great deal of human power. Hence, we may reach the engineering requirements by much less efforts and a little payment. Besides, the crack singularity in unbounded domain is also studied. A combination of both PS and FS is also employed, called combination of MFS. The numerical results of MPS and combination of MFS are coincident with each other. The study in this thesis may greatly extend the application of MFS from bounded simply-connected domains to other more complicated domains.

In the thesis manuscript we present new results concerning existence, nonexistence, multiplicity and regularity of positive solutions for two elliptic quasilinear problems with Dirichlet data in a bounded domain. In chapter 1 we describe the two problems which we study in the sequel and we give the main results. The first one, of unknown u, involves a gradient term with natural growth. The second one, of unknown v, presents a source term of order 0. In chapter 2 we give new regularity results for renormalized solutions. Thanks to a change of unknown we establish a precise connection between problems in u and v. Chapter 3 is devoted to show this connection and to give a first application. In the chapters 4 and 5 we treat existence solutions, extremal solution and its regularity, the existence of a second bounded solution for the problem in v. In chapter 6 we prove a result of existence for the problem in v with general bounded Radon measures data. In chapter 7 we obtain new results for the problem in u by using the connection between these two problems.

▼ Bullying/harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students is a major crisis. Using the photovoice methodology, seven junior high and high school students were recruited for a combination of visual sociology (photographs) and one-on-one / group dialogue sessions used to examine LGBTQ youth bullying in a Los Angeles, California suburb. Six themes emerged: (1) what the contemporary form of bullying is; (2) a lack of understanding on various levels - the disconnect between youth from other youth, youth from their parents, youth from their school faculty/administration, and youth from their community/city; (3) the notion of spaces - those that youth find negative and those they find safe; (4) the role of Gay-Straight Alliances; (5) common lack of motivations to seek help; and (6) proposed
solutions to address the problem. This study aims to highlight the youths' voices as part of the discourse surrounding their lived experiences of bullying, as well as incorporating their suggestions into the discussion of how the problem should be addressed.

▼ Problems involving partial or ordinary differential equations arise in various fields of science. Therefore, the task of obtaining exact
solutions of differential equations is of primary importance, and attracts high attention. The main purpose of the current thesis is the development of a Maple-based, symbolic software package for symmetry reduction of differential equations and computation of symmetry-invariant
solutions. The package developed in the current thesis is compatible with and can be viewed as an extension of the package GeM for symbolic symmetry analysis, developed by Prof. Alexei Cheviakov. The reduction procedure is based on the Lie's classical symmetry reduction method involving canonical coordinates. The developed package is applicable for obtaining
solutions arising from extension of Lie's method, in particular, nonlocal and approximate symmetries.
The developed software is applied to a number of PDE problems to obtain exact invariant
solutions. The considered equations include the one-dimensional nonlinear heat equation, the potential Burgers' equation, as well as equations arising in nonlinear elastostatics and elastodynamics.

▼ Antimicrobial agents have been incorporated into textile fabrics to inhibit the growth of undesirable odor-producing bacteria. In recent years, a variety of consumer textiles have been commercially released that utilize active chemical agents to disrupt the working function of bacterial cells, e.g. Stahylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. As consumer products it is essential that testing be preformed to evaluate the overall efficacy of an antibacterial fabric surface.
This thesis was prepared in collaboration with Microbonds, Canada, and involves the investigation of their odor eliminating spray Go.Fresh. The primary antibacterial agent is silver complexed with organic molecules—organometallic silver—dissolved in an aqueous solution. Silver is an excellent antibacterial due to its low toxicity to humans. Application of the organometallic in aerosol form enables fine dispersal of the solution onto any textile material. Characterization and antibacterial efficacy tests were preformed on candidates for the commercial silver organometallic solution (SOS).
This thesis outlines scientific methods used to evaluate SOSs in application. Test methods are divided into three sections: characterization of the organometallic silver via standard analytical techniques; development of metrics for staining on fabric at various organometallic concentrations; and measurement of antibacterial efficacy on treated fabrics. Chemical analysis via energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) confirmed the presence of silver on treated fabrics. Concentration measurements on fabric via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) indicated a 49 % loss in silver from initially applied amounts. Staining on fabric was accurately measured using a Nix Pro colour sensor. Discolouration based on the CIELAB colour space was applied. Imperceptible changes in colour was generally observed in samples at silver concentrations below 100 ppm. Lastly, antibacterial properties of the SOSs were confirmed by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests that reported complete elimination of 99.9 % of bacteria. Accelerated methods proposed for antibacterial testing based on concentrations of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) correlated well with MIC results. Fabric samples treated with organometallic silver reported a 96.4 % reduction in ATP relative to an untreated control. Additional ATP tests showed comparable bactericidal power to that of standard copper surfaces.

▼ The purpose of this study was to assess the practices of school Leadership in Addis Ababa City Administration and to find the barriers that cause these practices and problems of school leadership as well as to determine the possible
solutions for these problems. To carry out this study descriptive method was employed. Participants of the study were 295 teachers and 17 principals by using simple random sampling and purposive sampling method. Thirty two student representatives, six PTSA members’ seven education bureau officials’ twelve supervisors were also involved in the study. The data were collected by using a questionnaire, interview, and focus group discussions. Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis method were employed in order to reach to the results. Data obtained through questionnaire were analyzed and summarized using statistical tools. The statistics were entered into Statistical package for the Social science (SPSS Version 20.0) soft ware analysis. Statistical measures were performed on quantitative data assembled from the respondents; frequency count, Percentage, mean and standard deviation, were conducted. The study deals with examining the actual experience and problems of principals in government schools.. The findings of the study revealed that the position attainment and qualification of principals were not compatible in those secondary and preparatory schools. The finding principal position attainments designed as most of the principals were getting their position by higher authorities and there was no involvement of parents, teachers and other stakeholders on the best approaches and practices that would assist the achievement of school vision. Concerning main function of school principals, separating leadership functions from one to the other must get close attention. As finding of this study proved principals gave more emphasis on supervision and evaluation of teachers; the other school functions were relatively ignored. Finally it was recommended that position attainment conditions must be transparent. Besides, principals should strive to bring enthusiasms that help them to execute their duties and responsibilities. Furthermore, continuous professional development training on school leadership functions to principals is significant for the purpose of the principals to incorporate educational leadership tasks.

▼ The words on everybody’s lips in the enterprise world is ‘mobility’ but again the questions follow
on how secure are we as we have data being accessed anywhere anytime. Gone are the days
when information was on total lock down, and with Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES),
enterprises were assured of secure data access mainly in emails. Next came Citrix who offered
server virtualization and CIOs were all excited about enterprise mobility.
The revolution came with the Apple iPhone and iPad and hot on their heels was Android and the
age of Smartphones and mobility was overwhelming. This has brought about changes in the ICT
arena and users are now demanding to be let off the least and no more ‘total lockdown’ as the
BYOD phenomena has liberated them and telecommuting the order of the day. This has given
rise to the Consumerization of Information Technology and this calls for better IT governance in
order to ensure that employees are compliant to IS policies for the organization to function
without falling into loopholes undermining the IS security.
This research is aimed at discussing the options available for enterprises to realize mobility but
at the same time being at the helm in controlling the same by use of Enterprise Mobility
Management solutions. In conclusion, a recommendation of the best EMM solutions available in
the industry and what options to look out for in the future.

▼ The insurance sector in Kenya is riddled by many challenges among them low penetration levels, low persistency ratios and poor claims payment history. These problems have been persistent for a long time and they are mainly attributed to very low innovation levels across the sector. The low innovation level in the Kenyan insurance sector is mainly due to limited adoption of appropriate technological tools like Business Intelligence Solutions.
The objective of this project was to come up with an appropriate model for adoption of business intelligence (BI) solutions within the Kenyan insurance sector and to validate the proposed model for adoption of BI solutions within the Kenyan insurance sector.
Descriptive survey research type was used in this study. The population of the study consisted of all insurance companies duly licensed to transact in Kenya in the year 2016. Census sampling technique was. The primary data was collected using questionnaires with closed ended questions. The independent variables section of the questionnaire had five sub-sections namely; Users characteristics, Technological characteristics, Environmental characteristics, Organizational characteristics and Key decision maker characteristics. The questionnaires were administered in two ways; personal interview, and mail survey through drop and pick method. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze collected data. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to validate the proposed model.
The regression analysis results showed the relationships between user characteristics, organizational characteristics & key decision maker characteristics and adoption of BI were statistically significant. This is because their p-values were less than 0.05. On the other hand, the relationships between technological characteristics & environmental characteristics and adoption of BI were statistically insignificant since their p-values were greater than 0.05. The findings further revealed that key decision maker characteristics and organizational resources had a significant relationship with likelihood of adoption BI. This is because their p-values were less than 0.05. However, user characteristics, technological characteristics and environmental characteristics were found to have insignificant relationship with likelihood of adoption of BI solutions. These variables had p-values above 0.05.
The study recommended the validated model for adoption of BI solutions to the Kenyan insurance industry IT practitioners to use it as the basis for adoption BI and related technologies.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The main aim of this contribution is in demonstrating the process of decarbonation of aqueous solutions, or the controlled removal of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from aqueous solutions, as a process for aqueous mineral carbonation, specifically the production of magnesium (Mg) carbonates. Unlike more conventional mineral carbonation processes, which require the addition of alkaline agents, the engendering of supersaturation sufficient for precipitation is achieved through the inducement of a pH swing directly as a result of decarbonation. This pH change, dependent on the amount of CO₂ removed from solution, is calculable and measurable, and can thus be engineered both in terms of the degree of pH shift and the amount of Mg carbonate formed. Additionally, this thesis examines the sequestration of CO₂ using solutions augmented with heat activated serpentinite. The resultant Mg bicarbonate solutions can in turn be exploited for decarbonation and resultant mineral carbonation. The overall process, comprised of the sequestration of CO₂ using prepared solutions and the degassing of these solutions, can be operated under mild conditions.Experiments were conducted to examine the parameters affecting decarbonation processes. Mg sulfate (MgSO₄) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) solutions were used in experimentation. <i>Scenedesmus</i> microalgae, a single celled green alga, was used for biological decarbonation experiments. Batch experiments using the <i>Scenedesmus</i> alga confirmed its role in accelerating decarbonation and consequently reducing the time needed to precipitate Mg carbonate. Research concentrated on decarbonation via degassing, using a variety of nitrogen (N₂) sparging devices, because of the rapidity, simplicity and controllability of the process. Batch experiments involved N₂ discharging into a solution-charged reactor and similar trends were observed for all experiments with CO₂ degassing rapidly producing Mg carbonates, with significantly accelerated rates of CO₂ degassing being achieved using smaller bubbles and higher temperatures. Nesquehonite (MgCO₃·3H₂O) was the precipitated mineral phase for both the 30°C and 50°C experiments. Degassing and precipitation experiments were also conducted with carbonic anhydrase (CA) as a supplement to reagents and these experiments showed greater rates of degassing and resultant precipitation. A mathematical model describing the kinetic response of the bulk solution to CO₂ degassing through N₂ sparging, and the resulting precipitation of Mg carbonate, was formulated and was found to closely follow that calculated through thermodynamic simulation. The model allowed the performance of batch, semibatch and continuous degassing reactors or crystallisers to be assessed. Extension of the kinetic model to semibatch and continuous mode of operation showed that rate of degassing was controlling to steady-state rate of precipitation. Experiments were also conducted on the dissolution of heat activated serpentinite in CO₂-saturated…

▼ Due to the Transportation Security Act (TSA), which passed in November 2011, airport security has drastically changed. The new security checkpoint practices have caused security lines to be very long; on average, a traveler waits 90 minutes to get through security. Most airline travelers frequently describe feeling anxiety, frustration, stress, and annoyance while in airport security lines. Being overwhelmed with time, pressure to move quickly and the overall security check process are also problematic for them as well as for the TSA officers and airlines. However, these emotionally negative travel experiences can become positive ones with some design element intervention to the Transportation Security Act safety measures.

▼ Liquid transfer and drop formation/deposition processes associated with printing, spraying, atomization and coating flows involve complex free-surface flows including the formation of columnar necks that undergo spontaneous capillary-driven instability, thinning and pinch-off. For simple (Newtonian and inelastic) fluids, a complex interplay of capillary, inertial and viscous stresses determines the nonlinear dynamics underlying finite-time singularity as well as self-similar capillary thinning and pinch-off dynamics. In rheologically complex fluids, extra elastic stresses as well as non-Newtonian shear and extensional viscosities dramatically alter the pinch-off dynamics. Stream-wise velocity gradients that arise within the thinning columnar neck create an extensional flow field, and many complex fluids exhibit a much larger resistance to elongational flows than Newtonian fluids with similar shear viscosity. Characterization of the response to both shear and extensional flows that influence dispensing and liquid transfer applications requires bespoke instrumentation not available, or easily replicated, in most laboratories. Here we show that dripping-onto-substrate (DoS) rheometry protocols that involve visualization and analysis of capillary-driven thinning and pinch-off dynamics of a columnar neck formed between a nozzle and a sessile drop can be used for measuring extensional viscosity and extensional relaxation time of polymeric complex fluids. We show that DoS rheometry enables characterization of low viscosity printing inks and polymer
solutions that are beyond the measurable range of commercially-available capillary break-up extensional rheometer (CaBER). We find that the extensional relaxation times of semi-dilute, unentangled polymers in good solvent exhibit a stronger concentration dependence than observed in shear rheology response or anticipated by blob models developed for relaxation of weakly perturbed chains in a good solvent. We investigate the role of chemical structure by contrasting behavior of aqueous
solutions of flexible polyethylene oxide (PEO) with
solutions of semi-flexible hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and show that both flexibility and extensibility of chains dramatically influence the extensional rheology response and the macromolecular relaxation dynamics. Finally, we elucidate how macromolecular stretching and orientation in response to strong extensional flows modifies excluded volume and hydrodynamic interactions, affecting terminal extensional viscosity response as well as polymer relaxation dynamics, and consequently, determines the filament lifespan, the processing timescale, and processability for printing, coating, dispensing, and spraying applications.

▼ In this thesis, we apply the Kovacic’s algorithm, a tool that is developed from differential Galois theory, to determine whether the Whittaker-Ince equation, ellipsoidal wave equation and the Picard-Fuchs equation of a K3 surface have Liouvillian solutions or not. We have determined the necessary and sufficient conditions of having Liouvillian solutions for the Whittaker-Ince equation when one parameter is equal to zero. Also, we will give a sufficient condition of having a Liouvillian solution for the Whittaker-Ince equation when this parameter is non-zero. On the other hand, we have discovered that the ellipsoidal wave equation has no Liouvillian solution. We generalize a Picard-Fuchs equation for certain K3 surface and show that a particular case of the Picard-Fuchs equation cannot have any Liouvillian solutions.

▼ In this thesis we consider several aspects of general relativity relating to
exact
solutions of the Einstein equations. In the first part gravitational
plane waves in the Rosen form are investigated, and we develop a formalism
for writing down any arbitrary polarisation in this form. In addition to
this we have extended this algorithm to an arbitrary number of dimensions,
and have written down an explicit solution for a circularly polarized Rosen
wave. In the second part a particular, ultra-local limit along an arbitrary
timelike geodesic in any spacetime is constructed, in close analogy with the
well-known lightlike Penrose limit. This limit results in a Bianchi type I
spacetime. The properties of these spacetimes are examined in the context
of this limit, including the Einstein equations, stress-energy conservation and
Raychaudhuri equation. Furthermore the conditions for the Bianchi type I
spacetime to be diagonal are explicitly set forward, and the effect of the limit
on the matter content of a spacetime are examined.

▼ Coprecipitation is the substitution of one element for another during chemical precipitation and can be an effective treatment method for industrial wastewaters contaminated with high concentrations of metals. Predicting contaminant incorporation during coprecipitation reactions remains a challenge due to kinetic and mechanistic effects that shift incorporation away from the thermodynamic prediction. In this dissertation, I advance the understanding of contaminant incorporation during coprecipitation with barite and calcium carbonate through experimental data and thermodynamic and kinetic modeling.
In Chapter 2, I present novel nano-scale resolution chemical composition maps obtained from synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy of barite particles coprecipitated in the presence of strontium. Thermodynamic modeling of (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid
solutions was done using solid solution-aqueous solution (SS-AS) theory. The results show that the Sr content in (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid
solutions varies widely among particles and even within a single particle. We observed substantial Sr incorporation that is far larger than thermodynamic models predict, likely indicating the formation of metastable solid
solutions. These results suggest that coprecipitation offers significant potential for designing treatment systems for aqueous metals’ removal in desired metastable compositions.
In Chapter 3, I examine a wider range of solution conditions including saturation index, salinity, and cation/anion ration, and their effect on Sr incorporation in (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid
solutions using bulk XRF. In every experiment we found more strontium incorporation than predicted by SS-AS theory. Sr removal can be enhanced by increasing the saturation index of barite, decreasing salinity, and decreasing the Ba2+:SO42-. I also present a kinetic model of coprecipitation based on the growth rate of individual particles that provides better predictions of Sr incorporation than SS-AS thermodynamic theory.
In Chapter 4, I present measurements of incorporation of metals into calcium carbonate particles in the context of remediating coal fly ash leachate through CO2 mineralization. The results show consistently higher trace element incorporation than predicted by a thermodynamic model. The degree to which trace element incorporation was enhanced over the thermodynamic prediction was correlated to the solubility of the pure endmember. These results suggest that carbonate precipitation may be a more effective strategy to immobilize toxic elements than is commonly assumed.

▼ The Kirkwood-Buff theory is a general treatment of liquid
solutions at molecular level. Its application to bath nonionic and ionic
solutions has evoked great interest in recent years. The present thesis has two parts: the first part is about nonionic
solutions; the second part is about ionic
solutions. For the nonionic
solutions, there are two related major topics in the thesis: (1) the examination of the hydrophobic interaction for the water-hydroorganic cosolvent mixtures; (2) the effect of solvent on the thermal transition of black copolymer polyoxyethylene - polyoxypropylene (PEO-PPO-PEO). For the first topic, the hydrophobic effect present in bath water-alcohol and water-ethylene glycol(EG), ethanolamine(EA), ethylenediamine(ED), and 2-methoxyethanol(ME) systems have been examined in terms of the Kirkwood-Buff integrals, G₁₁, G₂₂ and G₁₂ , which reflect overall intermolecular affinity water/water, cosolvent/cosolvent and water/cosolvent, respectively. The Kirkwood-Buff integrals show that n-alcohols behave in a way much more complicated than those bifunctional cosolvents and indicate that the alcohol-alcohol affinity in the water/alcohol mixtures (expressible by G₂₂) plays a key role in this complexity. However, the various intermolecular affinity coefficients in the water/EG EA, ED and ME mixtures exhibit, in general, "parity" or similar features and the hydrophobic effect is obviously less strong than appeared in the water/alcohol system. For the second topic, based on the knowledge extracted regarding mixed aqueous-organic solvents, solvent effects on thermal-induced transition of the black copolymer, PEO-PPO-PEO, has been investigated using DSC. The result is show that, in general, the transition temperature is lowered (from about 30°C in water to about 10° C in the mixed aqueous-organic solvents) at relatively low cosolvent mole fraction( i.e. xs≤ 0.1). Simultaneously, the enthalpy and cooperativity of the transition are also greatly reduced. These changes in the transition parameters may arise from a preferential solvation of each fragment of the black copolymer and intra- and inter- molecular hydrophobic effects. Solvent effects on the microstate transition of the black copolymer may be expected to be significant to understand analogous thermal transitions appearing in protein denaturations. For ionic
solutions, the Kirkwood-Buff theory has been applied to derive the equation required to treat solvation problems of electrolytes. The equation derived may access the classical Debye-Huckel limiting law and can be further modified to yield a useful equation, which was shown applicable to model the activity coefficients of more than twenty 1:1 electrolytes in aqueous
solutions over wide range of concentrations and temperatures with high precision.

▼ Circular economy and the benefits of digital solutions are constantly gaining interest among researchers, companies and organizations. The two trends have separately received much attention during the recent years, but the cooperative opportunities of digital solutions in the area of circular economy are still to be further researched. While circular economy is introducing a new approach to consumption by keeping materials in a continuous cycle, digital solutions are generating new opportunities and innovations. The correlation between the two trends has been recognised but the empirical research results on the subject have been missing.
The conducted research focused on gaining insight into benefits, requirements and challenges related to the use of digital solutions in circular economy operations. Four organizations that operate with different circular economy solutions in Finland were interviewed based on current understanding on the subjects gained from scientific literature and expert interviews. As the interviewed companies focused on different areas of circular economy, the research provided results on all three value drivers of circular economy listed as resource efficiency, ex-tending product lifetime and closing material loops.
The different digital technologies used in the context of circular economy were identified and sorted under the categories of data collection, data integration and data analysis technologies. The different categories also resemble the development and implementation status of digital solutions as the earlier technologies are required to achieve development in the next category. Despite large attention on data analysis technologies and the opportunities of Big Data, the development status of most organizations still focuses on data collection solutions revolving around Internet of Things and its applications. Clear benefits can be seen to be achieved with data analysis solutions, but implementations on that level remain to be identified especially on a large scale. Even though the focus is still on data collection technologies, several benefits and effects to promote circular economy through digitalization were identified. This indicates that digital solutions have an important part in circular economy development as large potential is still to be researched with the benefits of data integration and data analysis technologies.
The results on interviews indicated that the requirements on implementing digitalized circular economy match the literature-based results, adding also new findings to the discussion. Customer interaction and consumer decision weighted heavily in the development of circular and digital solutions as the users need to agree on the development decisions for the solution to succeed. Additionally, the challenges found differed largely from the earlier research as the literature-based challenges focused on physical limitation and terminology discussion, where the interviewed organizations pinpointed the importance of finding top experts and solving data…

▼ The formation of drops from solutions is a common industrial and agricultural process. A fundamental understanding of how fluid rheology affects the formation of drops will permit a scientific approach to the design of nozzles and solution formulation. To that end, a systematic study of jet break up for dilute flexible molecule solutions was examined to determine the effect of the extensional fluid properties on the jet break up phenomena. The apparent extensional viscosity was measured with an opposed jet apparatus. The shear viscosity and surface tension of the test solutions was kept constant to isolate the effects of elastic properties. It was found that the break up of the capillary jet could be enhanced or retarded relative to Newtonian fluids by the presence of the polymer. This behaviour was a function of the polymer molecular weight and concentration and extended into a region where extensional viscosity measurements were unable to determine a difference between the test solutions. The polymers used were poly(ethylene oxide), and poly(vinyl alcohol).
In addition a brief study was made on the atomisation of dilute polymer solutions in industrial spray systems to determine whether a correlation could be established between atomisation in a nozzle and laminar jet breakup. It was found that the trends in the volume mean diameter of the droplets approximately followed the same trend observed in the break up length of the capillary jet. Finally, a brief investigation on the effect of rigid, semi-rigid and flexible macromolecules in solution was conducted in the atomisation apparatus. The flexible macromolecule used was poly(acrylamide), the rigid macromolecule was Xanthan gum, and the semi-rigid macromolecule was carboxy(methyl cellulose).
The main finding of the laminar capillary experiments was that the viscoelastic and extensional properties of polymer solutions cause competing effects in the break up of the jets; the viscoelastic properties promoting the break up, and the extensional properties retarding it. The implication of this finding is that the extensional and viscoelastic properties of flexible polymer solutions are not directly related as suggested by the current fluid models, and that the origin of the nature of the two phenomena is not as clear cut as was previously believed.
The spray atomisation experiments yielded further information supporting the separation of the two fluid properties. The drop size distribution of the low molecular weight solutions demonstrated a narrowing of the size distribution with the addition of the polymer, resulting in a decrease in the percentage of fine droplets formed, with only a marginal increase in the mean drop size. The presence of high molecular weight polymers caused a degradation of the spray quality, due to a reduction of the cone angle. The drop size from these solutions was uniformly increased, resulting in few or no…
