▼ There is a new wave of optimism across Africa with the advent of open market and support of private enterprise by many governments after years of a tight public sector led development. Accompanying the euphoria of entrepreneurship is the phenomenon of tech start-ups. The study of tech-start-ups is still in its nascent stages in academic circles on the continent. There is limited literature on the prospects tech start-ups can have on socioeconomic development in Africa. As a result, this study was centred at finding role-played by tech start-ups on the socioeconomic development in Ghana in particular. The study employed the qualitative research methodology and relied on semi-structured interviews and observation to gain more insights into Ghana’s start-up ecosystem from major stakeholders in different components of the tech start-up ecosystem in Ghana. There was also a review of the relevant literature on the topic. The study found that the major roles of tech start-ups in Ghana are harnessing innovation, creation of jobs, and increased competition for firms. The major challenges that are obstacles to the prospects of tech start-ups were identified by the study included poor infrastructure, financial constraints, unfavourable regulations and an immature ecosystem. The study proposed recommendations which included the need to have more academic research on the significance of tech start-ups to Ghana’s development, the need for tech entrepreneurs to explore crowdfunding as a solution to their financial constraints and the need for annual reports on the state of the Ghanaian tech start-up ecosystem to help identify progress made and challenges. It is imperative to find solutions to these challenges to improve upon the ecosystem in Ghana and enhance their global competitiveness.

▼ It is well known that higher parental
socioeconomic status (SES) predicts better child reading outcomes, but little work has been done to unpack this finding. The main overall question addressed by this project was whether cognitive models of the two main reading outcomes, single word reading (SWR) and reading comprehension (RC), performed similarly across levels of parental SES. The current study predicted a differential relation between parental SES and both predictors and outcomes because of the known large relation between parental SES and child oral language
development. Three questions examined the mediating effects of cognitive predictors on the relation between parental SES and reading outcomes, the moderating effects of SES on the developmental trajectories of reading outcomes, and the strength of the relationship between SES and the two reading outcomes. Participants were part of two large and comprehensive datasets: the cross-sectional Colorado Learning Disability Research Center (CLDRC; n=1554) sample, and the International Longitudinal Twin Study (ILTS; n=463 twin pairs) sample. In terms of cognitive predictors, the relation between SES and SWR was disproportionately mediated by two language skills, vocabulary (VOC) and phonological awareness (PA). For the RC models, both SWR and oral listening comprehension (OLC) did not disproportionally mediate the relation between RC and SES; however, full mediation was not exhibited. With regard to the trajectory of reading outcomes, SES moderated the starting values of SWR and RC, and the slopes of SWR
development. When performance on the control measures of early reading skills (e.g., print knowledge, vocabulary, and decoding skills) was included the models, the moderating effects of SES were completely accounted for by these measures. In terms of outcomes, SES had a stronger relation to RC than to SWR, especially at later ages. These findings have implications for interventions aimed at improving reading outcomes in children from lower SES families.

▼ Inequality within the family (i.e. differential parenting) is associated with a variety of measures of child adjustment. To date there is no research examining the effects of this phenomenon on children’s physical health, or on the fashion in which this phenomenon may combine and interact with socioeconomic markers. The present study assessed 375 mothers and their children over a period of 18 months. Differential maternal negativity between siblings predicted change in child health, controlling for child gender, age, maternal education, income/assets, and absolute level of negativity in the household. The association between maternal education and change in child health was strongest when children were also exposed to high differential negativity, suggesting that these predictors combined in a cumulative fashion. Findings indicate that multiple forms of social disadvantage (i.e. between families and between siblings) can operate independently or in combination with one another to predict change in child health.

▼ "Oil production in Chad is considered one of the most important Sub-Saharan investments in Africa. In 2000, the World Bank agreed to finance oil production under the condition that oil revenues would be invested in socioeconomic development projects. Furthermore, the World Bank emphasized that oil revenues should be used in a transparent and accountable matter.1 Oil production started in Chad in 2003 and brought billions of dollars to the government. Nevertheless, the Chadian population continues to live in extreme poverty. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of oil production on socioeconomic development. It will demonstrate that oil production has done little to improve the living conditions of the Chadian people."

▼ China’s reform and transition have dramatically accelerated the socioeconomicdevelopment in the last three decades. At the same time, the unequal distributions ofwealth and social resources have been intensified. China’s regional inequality hasattracted more attention from both policy makers and researchers. The centralgovernment has listed “reducing regional inequality” as one important goal of nationaldevelopment. This dissertation research intends to quantify China’s regional developmentduring the reform era by detecting the multiscale variation of regional inequality, examining the spatial-temporal hierarchy and influence of multimechanisms, andexploring one consequence of regional economic disparity.First, this project investigates China’s regional economic inequality from 1978 to2007. I analyze the multiscalar spatial patterns of economic disparities with Coefficientof Variation (CV), Gini Coefficient, and Theil Index, and explore the spatial-temporalhierarchy of multimechanisms and their specific influences on regional economy throughmultilevel modeling. The results reveal the significant role of municipalities for shapingthe spatial-temporal variation of China’s economic development, and indicate thesensitivity of regional inequality to spatial scale. The analysis also illustrates thatglobalization has become the prominent mechanism of China’s development in the recentdecade.Second, this study examines health care and health inequalities as an importantconsequence of an unbalanced regional economy. I apply Geographic InformationSystem (GIS)-based spatial statistical methods such as Coefficient of Variation andMoran’s I to detect spatial-temporal patterns of health care, and use multilevel regressionto examine the linkages between health care, mortality, and regional economic inequality. The analysis reveals that health care inequality is also sensitive to geographic scale, anddemonstrates that the concurrent transitions of decentralization, marketization, globalization, and urbanization in China have interactively contributed to health careinequality and mortality.Third, this research conducts a case study in a less investigated agricultureorientedinterior province, Henan Province. Such statistical and GIS methods as CV,Getis-Ord Gi*, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) are used to explore thedisparities in economic development and health care level as well as to examine theeffects of multiple transitions. The results uncover the significant core-periphery andurban-rural gaps in both economy and health care level.

THE LOCATIONAL PATTERNS AND SOCIOECONOMIC EFFECTS OF THE NEW MARKETS TAX CREDIT AND LOW INCOME HOUSING TAX CREDIT IN DISTRESSED METROPOLITAN CENSUS TRACTS.

▼ This dissertation investigates the role of two federal place-based programs, the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) and Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), as tools for revitalizing distressed communities. The first empirical chapter organizes low-income, high-poverty metropolitan census tracts into a typology based on their demographic, class status, built environment, and location characteristics in 2000. Principal components analysis uncovered three prominent neighborhood dimensions: class status, urbanization, and black
socioeconomic isolation. These dimensions were entered into a cluster analysis, which identified ten distinct types of poor metropolitan neighborhoods. NMTC investment, LIHTC investment, and
socioeconomic ascent were highly correlated across neighborhood types. This finding supports an assumption made in previous studies that developers, who play an important role in determining where subsidized projects are located, are motivated to seek out areas primed to undergo
socioeconomic ascent. The neighborhood dimension describing the degree of urbanization was only baseline variable consistently related to both sources of place-based investment and future
socioeconomic ascent, suggesting that developer preferences are informed by observable urbanization-related factors. These findings were then applied to the
development of a model for estimating the effects of place-based investment on a neighborhood’s
socioeconomic trajectory. I use a variation of propensity score matching allowing for multiple treatment conditions to compare 2000 to 2010 changes in income, poverty, unemployment, and home values between census tracts that received different combinations of investment through (a) both NMTC and LIHTC, (b) NMTC alone, (c) LIHTC alone, and (d) neither program. Findings revealed that the addition of NMTC had a positive impact on
socioeconomic trajectories, while adding LIHTC-subsidized housing into a census tract could have a positive, negligible, or negative impact, depending on the comparison condition. Overall, this dissertation contributes to a better understanding of why certain types of poor places may be more likely to benefit from these types of market-driven place-based initiatives than others, and introduces a more integrated and nuanced approach for evaluating programs that operate within shared geographic space to address different facets of neighborhood poverty.

vieram dar destaque a novos territórios estratégicos, nomeadamente regiões e cidades.
A persistência
The globalization process and the weakness of the national unity as spatial reference has highlighted
new strategic territorial units namely regions and cities. The success or failure of developing cities
and regions influences decisively the successes and failures of the countries where they are
located. Place marketing is a process of territorial promotion, and its ultimate goal is the local
development, mobilizing resources and highlighting the region's comparative advantages, in order to
enhance their socioeconomic development. The main objective of this study is to assess what are the
critical success factors in territorial promotion of Alentejo region and check for the conditions that
this region is already using in order to become competitive, particularly in the context of European
regions. The persistence of structural problems that have been listed and have been reflected in the
poor results that Alentejo region as achieved in what regards the promotion of business environment
and subsequent national and international projection point the need of strategic planning as a mean
to define the paths that lead to the creation of sustainable regional development models.

This dissertation examines public spending of municipalities of Paraná relating it to the socioeconomic development. The study is organized in three empirical chapters, predominantly quantitative. Methodological tools were used as the following: factor analysis, Cluster analysis, data envelopment analysis (DEA), ANOVA, t test of means for independent samples, correlation analysis and panel data model. When accomplishing this dissertation, were emphasized inequalities in the socioeconomic conditions in cities and regions of Parana; the positive relationship between efficiency in the allocation of public spending and better socioeconomic indicators; and the relation between the intervention of public administration and the municipal development. This study confirmed the assumption that growth and development are different concepts, the latter being multidimensional. It was concluded also that economic growth doesnt, necessarily, development, because the fact of public management have resources available for investment, just, isnt enough, it is essential to how they are used. As the peculiar socioeconomic development strategy for each location or region, while the municipal public administration closer to the citizen, it is understood that this sphere is fundamental to the promotion of development. It is hoped that this study will guide the policy makers…

▼ Children’s environments early in life can have a profound influence on brain development, which provides the foundation for language and cognition. These environments include broad, distant factors such as one’s socioeconomic status (SES), as well as more immediate influences, such as how many words a parent speaks to a child. In this thesis, I describe two studies investigating specific brain-environment relationships, progressing from distal to proximal influences on children’s language and literacy development.
The first study (chapter 2) examines how SES relates to reading and cortical structure in 6-9 year-old children with reading disability (RD), before and after an intensive summer intervention. At baseline, SES was correlated with children’s vocabulary and cortical thickness in bilateral perisylvian and supramarginal regions. Furthermore, SES uniquely predicted reading improvement and cortical growth, with lower-SES children exhibiting the greatest behavioral and neuroanatomical changes. These findings contribute to the literature on socioeconomic effects on neuroanatomy and neuroplasticity by investigating these relationships in a developmentally atypical population.
The second study (chapters 3 and 4) explores how the real-world language exposure of younger children (ages 4-6 years) relates to their oral language skills and both structural and functional brain development, independent of SES. While the sheer amount of adult speech was unrelated to neural measures, the amount of adult-child conversational turns was strongly related to Broca’s area activation during language processing, as well as the coherence of left hemisphere white matter tracts connecting Broca’s area to auditory regions. Both neural measures in turn predicted children’s verbal skills, suggesting that conversational experience impacts language development via these neural mechanisms. This is the first evidence directly relating children’s immediate language environments with brain development.
The combined results of both studies expand on the well-documented socioeconomic differences in linguistic skill (the “achievement gap”) and concomitant brain development and suggest that these differences may arise as a result of variance in children’s interactive language experiences early in life. Implications for social, educational, and clinical practices are discussed.

▼ In this dissertation, we examine the socioeconomic impact of land reform schemes and discuss the policy implications of combining aspects of both state-led and market-based approaches to land reallocation through regional planning. We focus on land reform settlements in Northeast Brazil, where both approaches operated over the same time frame (1997-2002). Empirically, we identify the effects of various indicators on the socioeconomic growth of a sample of rural territories and localities, giving emphasis to the influence of the market-based Land Bill Programme (PCT) and the traditional state-led scheme (INCRA) on that growth through panel data analysis, cross-section regressions and field-based analysis.
It has been concluded that: i) The scope for plan-led strategies towards sustainable development in the countryside has been given less than sufficient emphasis in the land reform literature; ii) There is not clear evidence that the market-based approach leads to higher socioeconomic growth regionally than does the state-led approach, or vice versa; iii) Although the market-based scheme contributed to improved access to title, the PCT settlements failed to impact positively settlers’ welfare in the majority of sites; iv) Securing both higher access to land rights and better living conditions through land reform requires an approach that combines both state-led and market-based elements; v) Securing measurable positive impacts on the regional economy requires a land reform strategy that has a regional scope. As a policy implication, the work suggests the adoption of a plan-led land reform strategy that is coordinated at all government levels and between the public and private sectors, and one that involves establishing strategic portfolios of potentially sustainable areas, defining spending priorities for those areas along with funding possibilities through regional planning.
Differently from the commonsense literature on land reform in developing countries, this work demonstrates that regional planning has an essential part to play in land reform through proposing a plan-led strategy that combines elements of both market-based and state-led approaches to the benefit of the regional economy.

▼ Using survey data and a multi-level time-lagged linear regression, we show that cultural values are primal in the human development sequence. The spread of advantageous cultural values - like respect for individual rights - predicts future economic development and democracy. The World and European Values Surveys (WEVS) are administered in 109 countries representing over 90% of the world's population. They are designed to quantify cultural values and facilitate comparative analysis on a global scale. We found nine underlying cultural factors in the WEVS that can be compressed into three orthogonal cultural value components: Secular-Rationality, Openness and Institutional Support. Furthermore, the 109 countries fall into one of four clusters representing different cultural-histories: African-Islamic, Catholic, Western and Communist-Confucian. We find two independent modes of cultural value dynamics that have very different characters: generational and opinion change. Generational change is persistent and steady and shows strong links to human development. Opinion change, conversely, is rapid and transient and shows weak links to human development. Opinion change dominates short run cultural value variation, but generational change dominates in the long run. Generational changes in cultural values precede those in human development. This makes it unlikely that human development causes cultural values to change. Even though analysis using the standard WEVS cross-sectional samples show that cultural values weakly predict human development, cross-sectional dynamics are dominated by transient opinion change. Human development is unaffected in the long run. We show that cultural-history is not needed to explain human development inequalities once past cultural values have been controlled for. However, cultural-history still influences the spread of cultural values themselves. Finally, the surprising recent decline in Support for Institutions is predicted by past increases in Secular-Rationality; meaning it could be a side-effect of human development.

▼ Children raised in socially disadvantaged settings often exhibit poorer developmental health in a variety of domains, including socioemotional, medical and cognitive functioning. This relationship appears to operate in part via a cascade linking poverty and cumulative environmental adversity to early biological risk and interpersonal family process. Moreover, these mechanisms are suggested to function over-and-above the direct effects of material investments in childrenâ s healthy
development and wellbeing. Despite this knowledge, there remains a need for longitudinal developmental research examining the nature in which environmental risk in early life impacts multiple and distinct intermediary mechanisms that are manifest within the proximal family environment. In order to address this limitation, the present dissertation provides three separate empirical studies outlining the nature in which social disadvantage impacts family process (in the form of interpersonal sensitivity), and early biological risk (in the form of birth weight). Data for the present dissertation came from the Kids, Families and Places Study, which is a population-based prospective birth cohort of newborn infants and their families from Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (N=501 families). The present dissertation demonstrates that social disadvantage (1) impacts cognitive functioning in a number of domains at the time of school entry via maternal sensitivity and material investments, (2) disrupts the receipt of cognitive sensitivity during family interactions across multiple dyads, particularly for younger siblings, and (3) simultaneously increases developmental risk for multiple siblings-per-family and tends to increase sibling differences in developmental experience. To conclude, implications for the study of developmental health and family science are discussed.

Environment-by-brain development interactions as predictors of adolescent depressive symptoms and psychological well-being: structural brain development as a marker of responsivity to maternal parenting and socioeconomic status.

▼ Background
Adolescence is widely reported to be a time of increased risk for depression and lower well-being. Importantly, however, outcomes are heterogeneous, and most adolescents do not develop mental health problems. In order to understand how these differences emerge, both environmental and biological factors have been examined in the literature. Evidence indicates that parenting behaviour, socioeconomic status and neurobiology may contribute and, further, that individual differences in brain development may moderate the extent to which contextual factors influence adolescents. That is, individual differences in brain development may confer ‘responsivity’ to context. Several developmental and evolutionary-developmental models provide frameworks with which to interpret such brain-by-environment interactions, and to describe biological responsivity – these are broadly associated with diathesis-stress and differential susceptibility/biological sensitivity frameworks.
Broad PhD aim
This thesis aims to investigate whether structural brain development moderates adolescent sensitivity to maternal parenting behaviour in the prediction of adolescent depressive symptoms and psychological well-being. Two empirical studies were completed to address this aim. Study 1 examined whether longitudinal change in brain structure modified adolescent vulnerability or susceptibility to aggressive and positive maternal parenting. Effects were assessed to infer evidence in support of either diathesis-stress or differential susceptibility frameworks. Study 2, in light of evidence that positive parenting protects against adversity, considered whether brain development moderated adolescent sensitivity to positive parenting, and whether this association was more pronounced for adolescents with low-socioeconomic status (SES).
Methodology
During early adolescence (age 13 years), participants completed observed interactions with their mothers, and the frequency of positive maternal behaviour was coded. At three time points (mean ages 13, 17 and 19 years), participants completed structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. During late adolescence (age 19 years), participants completed self-report measures of depressive symptoms and psychological well-being.
Two separate analyses (studies) were conducted in predicting late adolescent (age 19) outcomes (depressive symptoms and psychological well-being). For both studies, longitudinal brain development was indexed by changes in cortical thickness of structures within the frontal lobe, and volumetric changes of subcortical structures, from early to late adolescence. Study 1: Regression models analysed interactions between maternal behaviour and longitudinal brain development in the prediction of adolescent outcomes. Indices designed to distinguish between diathesis-stress and differential susceptibility effects were employed. Study 2: Regression models were used to investigate interactions between SES (parental occupation), positive maternal behaviour, and longitudinal brain…

▼ During the early months of a child’s language
development, their ability to perceive and process language is very fluid and the language input they receive can have a large impact on their language later in life. From the beginning, children need to be able to differentiate the sounds of speech from the rest of the sounds that occur in their environment (Golinkoff, Can, Soderstrom, Hirsh-Pasek, 2015). In other words, children are exposed to the different sounds in their environment and they begin to pick up on the speech sounds, such as conversation-like interactions, with their parents (Golinkoff et al., 2015). Hart and Risley (1995) found that there were differences in the amount of interaction parents have with their children correlated with
socioeconomic status (SES) groups. Researchers have identified that the more interaction that children have with their families, the greater their vocabulary will grow (Golinkoff et al., 2015). The results showed no significant difference between the low SES mothers and the mid SES mothers.

▼ Childhood socioeconomic status (SES) is often studied alongside a number of related constructs, such as subjective SES, race/ethnicity, and childhood maltreatment. At times, these and other constructs are considered together as measures of ‘cumulative risk’ or ‘early life stress.’ However, little is known about their similar or distinct impact on development. The present research was aimed at better understanding the ways that childhood SES and related constructs predict a range of developmental outcomes. Chapter 1 examined the relations between childhood SES, childhood maltreatment and the structure of the hippocampus and amygdala in young adulthood. Childhood maltreatment, but not childhood SES, predicted smaller hippocampal volumes. The research in Chapter 2 examined the relationship between childhood SES, race, and parent and teacher report of ADHD symptoms in two samples of school-aged children. Results showed that these relationships differed depending on whether parents or teachers were reporting symptoms: lower SES and African American race were associated with higher levels of symptoms as reported by teachers, but not by parents. Chapter 3 examined objective SES and subjective SES as predictors of academic achievement in a diverse sample of high school seniors. Analyses revealed that objective SES and subjective SES showed opposite relationships with achievement: while adolescents from higher SES backgrounds, as measured objectively, showed higher achievement on a range of measures, those who perceived themselves as higher SES earned lower grades and standardized test scores and were less likely to be enrolled full-time in college after high school. Collectively, these results suggest that childhood SES and related experiences show distinct relationships to a range of behavioral and neural outcomes.

▼ Socioeconomic disadvantage in childhood has been associated with difficulties in physical and mental health later in life. A potential pathway underlying this association is through variations in brain
development. While associations between concurrent
socioeconomic disadvantage and brain structural
development have been established, it is unclear if there are prospective associations between childhood disadvantage and brain structure later in life (adulthood). The following studies address these gaps in the knowledge by examining the prospective association between childhood
socioeconomic status and brain structure in adulthood. Study One examines the association between average family income across childhood and brain structural morphometry in adulthood. This study found a positive association, primarily for surface area, in the rostral and caudal middle frontal gyri. Study Two examine childhood
socioeconomic (age 9) and white matter organization in adulthood and found positive associations in the uncinate fasciculus and cingulum bundle. These studies suggest the prospective association between childhood disadvantage and adult brain structure is long-lasting and highlight the importance of eliminating poverty in childhood.

▼ This study entitled Socio-Economic Impact of Job
Reservation: A Comparative Study of the Christian Malai Arayans and
Other Hill Tribes in Idukki and Kottayam Districts of Kerala is an
endeavor to evaluate the overall progress of the Christian Malai
Arayans in juxtaposition with that of the Hindu Malai Arayans, the
Ulladans and the Uralies. Relying on empirical data, the researcher
compared the level of development achieved by these tribes on the
basis of a composite index of development (Socio-Economic
Development Index). Socio Economic Development Index consists of
the component indices like income, education, basic amenities,
social infrastructure and freedom from social evils. The level of
development and the gap in development of the tribes under study
have been assessed within the broader theoretical parameters of
Amartya Sen s concept of development as freedom. The study
establishes a positive relationship between job reservation and
socio-economic development of the Christian Malai Arayans. One of
the major findings of the study is that the Christian Malai Arayans
have been able to attain a higher socio-economic development in
relation to their tribal compatriots. The fact that the Christian
Malai Arayans have been more successful in availing themselves of
the policy of reservation is quite patently crystallized from the
empirical data. It emerges from the study that other tribal groups
have not been quite successful in utilizing the reservation
provisions effectively. The inspirational role played by the
protestant missionaries and later by the Church of South India has
been found to be instrumental in enhancing the capabilities of the
Christian segment of the Malai Arayans. As a result, they have
managed to secure more employment in the organized sector availing
themselves of the reservation provisions. The deleterious effects
of a market friendly development trajectory on the poorer sections
in general and the tribals in particular have manifested themselves
in the form of reduced employment..

▼ Statistical learning (SL) is believed to be a mechanism that enables successful language acquisition. Language acquisition in turn is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as
socioeconomic status (SES). However, it is unknown to what extent SL abilities interact with SES in affecting language outcomes. To examine this potential interaction, we measured event-related potentials (ERPs) in 38 children aged 7-12 while performing a visual SL task consisting of a sequence of stimuli that contained covert statistical probabilities that predicted a target stimulus. Hierarchical regression results indicated that SL ability moderated the relationship between SES (average of both caregiver’s education level) and language scores (grammar, and marginally with receptive vocabulary). For children with high SL ability, SES had a weaker effect on language compared to children with low SL ability, suggesting that having good SL abilities could help ameliorate the disadvantages associated with being raised in a family with lower SES.

▼ The purpose of this thesis studies the possible
incorporation of agricultural edible landscapes in new settlement
designs in the Cluj region of Romania. Thereby evaluating the
feasibility of developing a modern agricultural community in this
area.Planning developments actively engage several aspects of urban
agriculture and edible landscape practices in the design process.
Through an in-depth research on the history of agriculture, this
thesis determines that farming remains a theme of rural lifestyle
and is a primary driver in new
development.Derived from the study
of present conditions in Cluj, this thesis analyzes current trends
from precedents in agricultural community practices to identify
opportunities incorporating modern agriculture
development with
rural planning. In response to the challenges of a post-communism
era, Romanians have taken initiatives in restoring and generating
new agricultural landscape
development patterns that cater to the
changing needs of suburban dwellers. This thesis examines three
main methodological approaches in planning execution: the creative
development scenario, the Rational Urbanism, and the Agrarian
Urbanism. To adapt the natural condition while exploring planning
rationales, the master plan reflects two main concepts: draw
connections between neighboring communities, and incorporating
farming lifestyle needs.Based on the thesis study, the master plan
translates the research on the historical background, demographic
profiles, and topographic features into zoning organization; and
advances to research to the architectural design of a farmer’s
market.

▼ The purpose of this case study was to examine the effect of exposure to symbolic gestures or “Baby Sign” on the
development of joint attention, receptive and expressive language of children from low
socioeconomic backgrounds, including culturally/linguistically diverse children aged 9 to 20 months. Two child-parent dyads participated in the program. Both were enrolled in the local “Head Start” (Reach-Up) program. The MacArthur Bates, Preschool Language Scales-4 (PLS-4) and video-recorded interactions with the primary caregiver were used to assess the effectiveness of Baby Sign parent-training to facilitate early language
development. Results of the Preschool Language Scales-4 and the MacArthur Bates identified improved both receptive and expressive language in “at risk” (low
socioeconomic and culturally diverse backgrounds) infants exposed to Baby Sign. In addition, qualitative data collected by parent interview revealed significant barriers to service delivery for early language facilitation, particularly for culturally/linguistically diverse children from low
socioeconomic backgrounds.

This research was developed in the basin of the river Meia Ponte / stream Anicuns, in the metropolitan region of Goiânia-Go, according to the finding of high rates of pollution with concentration of heavy metals in wealth and the possibility of exposure and contamination of surrounding populations, involvement Central Nervous System and engine performance. The problem is the scientific identification of the main differences of the condition of motor skills and overall drive through the application of the battery of tests engines Rosa Neto (2002), for children from 7 to 8 years who reside near the stream Anicuns, compared with the results of children living in local geographically distant from polluted springs. He had himself as hypothesis that children who reside in the vicinity of stream Anicuns, have a level of motor development lower than the control group. The sample consisted of 80 children students of the School Council Alonso Dias Pinheiro and 49 children of the School Council Frei Demétrio Zaqueta (control group). The classification of socioeconomic level was established by application of a questionnaire with issues closed to parents of children and interviews with teachers. Tables were used for frequency and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare the performance engine within and…

▼ Background and Objectives: It is estimated that over 40% of children in Ecuador are anemic. Anemia in children can influence physical and cognitive development and have lasting effects on adulthood productivity and quality of life. The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the relationship of anemia and cognitive function, and (2) determine the influence of demographic factors on cognitive function. Population and Setting: The sample consisted of 175 school-aged children between 5 to 11 years old attending a school in a poverty stricken area of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Methods: A descriptive correlational cross sectional design was used to study the relationship between the level of anemia and the level of cognitive function. Other demographic factors were evaluated to determine their influence on cognitive function. Data were collected at the school using the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices to measure cognitive function and the STAT-Site MHgb Meter to measure hemoglobin levels. Results: No significant correlation was found between the level of anemia and cognitive function. Multiple regression analysis of demographic variables and cognitive function found age (Beta=0.56, t=8.6, p=0.000) and income (Beta=0.16, t=2.5, p=0.01) to be significant predictors of cognitive function. Interpretation and Conclusion: Many factors influence cognitive function and development. Additional research is needed to determine the effect of income level and related factors, such as parental time spent with the child doing homework, value placed on education in the home, education level of the parents, and quality of nutrition. Interventions to improve socioeconomic level, enhance parenting styles that foster cognitive development, and improve nutrition should be implemented.

▼ Paper 1: Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (N = 1938), a birth cohort study, this work examined how income and changes in income are associated with life course transitions regarding relationship status, such as marriage or breaking up, and transitioning to parenthood in first cohabiting unions. Results were consistent with the Financial Expectation and Family Formation theory given that income and changes in income were associated with greater odds of marriage, but not related to parenthood.
Paper 2: This study examined continuities in socioeconomic status across two generations (G1, G2) directly and as mediated through G1 parenting, G2 personality, and G2 age of first romantic partnership. Participants were 334 emerging adults from an ongoing longitudinal study on the transition to adulthood. Consistent with the interactionist model, the results indicated that G1 SES was associated with G2 personality indirectly through G1 parenting. G1 parenting was also indirectly associated with G2 age at partnership through G2 personality. G1 SES and G2 first partnership directly predicted G2 SES. Findings were consistent across each personality superfactor: positive emotionality, negative emotionality, and constraint.

▼ Like many other economic and social activities that are infrastructure-intensive, the transport sector is an important component of the economy impacting on national, regional and local
development as well as the welfare of citizens. An efficient transport infrastructure provides a multitude of
socioeconomic opportunities and benefits with positive multiplier effects such as better accessibility to markets, employment, education and health. If it is well managed, transport infrastructure transforms the quality of life of residents through dynamic externalities it generates. But when infrastructure is deficient in terms of capacity, efficiency or reliability, it can have unwarranted economic
costs due to reduced or missed opportunities. Despite its central role in rural
development, little is known about the extent and impact of the various benefits that arise from the
development of roads, particularly in developing countries. A large body of literature exists documenting the spatial patterns of
socioeconomic development which can be induced by road infrastructure
development processes and are in most cases dynamic and temporal. The impacts of a given road infrastructure
development can also be analysed at the local, regional or national perspectives. The local impact is expected to be limited to the immediate neighbourhoods of the highway including tukuls, towns and villages to be found on both sides of the road within a distance of 5kms defining the influence zone. Based on this, the main objective of this research is to assess
socioeconomic impacts of road infrastructure
development of three newly developed highways on their respective surrounding communities 5-10 years after the interventions. Two of the highways are gravel surfaced and one is paved type. The respective study names are: Gendewuha – Gelago road (Corridor 1), Mile – Weldiya road (Corridor 2) and Ginchi – Kachisi road (Corridor 3).
Their respective lengths are 165; 125; and 105 kilometres, while the study refers 10 kilometres on both sides of the roads. The study had focused on primary data on selected variables that describe
socioeconomic conditions both before and after the intervention by using mixed methods of data collection considering quasi experimental design (QED). The main methods of analysis employed are descriptive and inferential statistics. Models such as: Random model approach and double-difference regression were used. The research had utilized two types of impact analyses (temporal and spatial) for comparison and also tested by using paired sample t tests: First: for each of the three corridors, comparisons between current conditions and the situation before the road intervention and, second: comparing conditions in the zone of influence (ZOI) situated within 5kms with control zone (COZ) situated beyond 5kms which are considered not to benefit much from road improvements during the period covered by the study. The research is based on data collected from 392 household heads, 77 key informants, 69 FGD participants from seven…

▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate the developmental impacts of Business Social Responsibility (BSR) of the tourism industry in South Africa with a special focus on the Western Cape region. The study was based on the premise that little is known regarding the role and contribution of BSR of the tourism sector to the three critical challenges: poverty, unemployment and inequality that South Africa is facing. The effectiveness of South African tourism policies in guiding the industry and the extend of compliance were assessed. Extensive relevant literature was reviewed, providing a framework for the analysis and interpretation of the research findings. Different types of tourism businesses, 307 in total, were surveyed in the Western Cape Province using stratified sampling. Government tourism departments and community organisations were identified as the key informants. Mixed research methods were applied, allowing for various tools and techniques to be used. Research data was analysed using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The research findings were analysed and interpreted using theoretical realism and neoliberalism frameworks.
The findings indicated that the government developed a series of regulations and procedures to guide the tourism sector. Key role players and international investors design and implement BSR activities with complete disregard of intended community stakeholders. There is little or no significant participation in the design stage of intended stakeholders. Targeted communities are not able to raise critical issues largely because of poverty and unemployment. Though there are regulations such as B-BBEE, employment equity, BSR policies governing various tourism businesses have largely ignored these regulations. Attracting investors has been a major concern for the government with little concern of the nature of activities, impacts and their contributions on reducing the triple challenges in the country. This study contends that the current policies and regulatory frameworks are much too market friendly. Hence, the tourism industry has largely been able to implement policies that favours market goals. Some tourism BSR policies are aligned to the province’s institutional framework while others are not, indicating a lack of sustainable
development. A model is proposed to improve the implementation of tourism BSR activities and policies

By means of our research work we wished to demonstrate the importance of the inter-action between structure and behavior for companies which are about to develop their business. It is actually a question of considering this interrelation as a key factor in terms of con-solidation for the survival and the development of these companies. In our thesis, we so present the implementation of the socioeconomic management tools, based on the intervention led in twelve companies in the development phase of their business. At the end of our work, this process is analyzed with regard to its results and its impact on the socioeconomic performance of the studied organizations.
