▼ Significant changes in demographics, including a growing ageing population and a larger number of people with disabilities, have made inclusive design an increasingly relevant notion in the design of products, services, and environments. However, there is considerable concern that the concept of inclusive design is rather limited in its current definition and applications and has not yet been thoroughly applied. This is possibly due to the conventional understanding and application of inclusive design, mainly rooted in and focused on physical aspects of inclusion, such as accessibility, usefulness, and usability. This limited focus has led various voices in design academia and industry to speak of the need for further consideration of the psychological and social aspects of inclusive design as the next step to facilitate inclusive design, and make impact. In this research, inclusivity on psychological and social levels, is referred to as "psychosocial inclusivity". The concept of psychosocial inclusivity, including a clear definition thereof and its application, is rather limited in the existing literature. Therefore, this PhD research aims to further explore this concept by establishing a clear definition and the dimensions thereof. In order to achieve this, an initial definition and dimensions of the psychosocial inclusivity in design are established through a critical review of existing literature from both social science and design perspectives. The initial definition and dimensions are then developed, refined, and evaluated through four empirical studies: the Delphi study (expert survey); field study I (ethnographic interviews with mobility scheme users); field study II (ethnographic interviews, creative workshop, and observation of older individuals); and an evaluation study (online survey of design academics and professionals). These studies have been designed based on a triangulation approach in order to enhance the reliability and validity of the outcomes. At the end of this research, the definition and dimensions for psychosocial inclusivity in design (Cognitive, Emotional, Social, and Value dimensions) are proposed. The outcomes of this research can enhance the understanding and knowledge of the concept of psychosocial inclusivity in design. Also, the definition and dimensions can be used by design academics and professionals or third parties to consider psychosocial aspects. The dimensions also can be developed as a complete set of framework or toolkit through further research.

▼ This thesis contributes original knowledge through an inclusive design approach to lowering language and communication barriers in healthcare and suggests shifting the discussion from culture to context to lower intra-cultural hindrances towards learning English amongst some ethnic minorities. It offers an adaptable, scalable concept for gathering data on ethnic minorities (considering both different generations and religions) and employs a framework based analysis in design. Over the course of three studies grounded on theoretical insights from literature, primary research lead to the development and testing of innovative aids for communication, including educative and motivational elements. This research began by seeking to understand ethnic minority consumers (EMCs) perceptions of any barriers hindering their take-up of products or services in the UK, and their preferences. This is particularly significant as the UK s EMC population is predicted to double by 2051 and to diversify further, presenting challenges for social cohesion and planning future community goals. EMCs also represent a significant market for service and product providers. The research focussed on EMCs from the Indian Subcontinent based on religions and generations. It highlighted that first generation females lacking English and/or literacy (across religions and age groups) faced problems with services and issues around empowerment . The importance of improved access to healthcare was a strong theme. On investigating NHS staffs perceptions, five barriers were identified (Language barriers; Low-literacy; a Lack of understanding; Attitudes, gender and health beliefs; and Information retention) and that a female subgroup was particularly affected. This study sets out staffs perceptions of the aids currently employed and suggestions of what would help. It identified a (currently) low use of visual communication aids in adult-patient care and that pharmacist-patient communication in pharmacies was low. Ideally, staff would like patients to learn English and to use more low-cost visual communication aids. These findings lead to the development of innovative visual communication aids through inclusive and user-centred approaches and participatory design and brainstorming methods. This enabled the development of aids by considering the needs of NHS staff, EMCs lacking English and/or literacy and indigenous elderly people to promote better patient-staff communication including a take-away educational element for learning English at home.

trabalho realizado surge pela necessidade de descrever o projeto elaborado no decorrer do mestrado em Design Integrado, este que desenvolve um kit de estimulação sensorial para pacientes afetados pela demência. No desenvolvimento do projeto, foi-se revelando cada vez mais a importância da proximidade com estes pacientes para melhor compreendermos as necessidades e dificuldades dos mesmos. Para tal foi necessária a convivência, compreendendo melhor o dia-a-dia dos pacientes com demência. O acompanhamento das atividades desenvolvidas numa instituição de referência foi fulcral para o projeto, para assim podermos minimizar os danos provocados pela demência, ao longo do tempo, e perceber como o design pode ajudar através de novas ferramentas como a interação tanto analógica como digital. Uma vez que a prevalência da demência tem aumentado, existe cada vez mais a necessidade de se desenvolverem ferramentas capazes de travar este aumento. Estes pacientes carecem de estímulos que permitem melhorar a funcionalidade cognitiva e social e em última instância a manutenção da autonomia e independência. Neste projeto, o design tem como objetivo conceber um objeto interativo e estimulante, com atividades relacionadas com os cinco sentidos: olfato, tato, paladar, visão e audição. O projeto tem como base a dinâmica lúdica, ao mesmo tempo que fornece estímulos que proporcionam uma melhor qualidade de vida ao paciente. Este projeto pretende também estreitar os laços entre o design e a saúde, nomeadamente com o que se relaciona com esta patologia. Visa também sensibilizar a sociedade para os efeitos do envelhecimento, da solidão, da falta de estímulo e convivência social. A preocupação e o interesse deste projeto permitirá concluir se é possível ajudar o paciente a prolongar as suas memórias. A parte ilustrativa e interativa foram os pontos principais. A primeira deverá conduzir os idosos num ambiente conhecido e de fácil perceção, podendo identificar memórias. A interatividade vem ajudar a complementar dinamicamente este projeto, fazendo com que haja interação e interesse por parte dos idosos a participarem e a se envolverem nas atividades propostas. O estreitamento do laço entre o design e saúde é fundamental para o projeto ser sustentável. Denota-se na sociedade uma necessidade de realçar que a inclusão não seja uma obrigação, mas sim um direito de qualquer cidadão em ser acolhido e envolvido. Neste projeto pretende-se sensibilizar e demonstrar através do design que é possível projetar uma intervenção que permita contribuir para uma melhor qualidade de vida dos doentes com demência, através da estimulação ajudando-os assim a aproveitar a vida com dignidade.

This is particularly significant as the UK s EMC population is predicted to double by 2051 and to diversify further, presenting challenges for social cohesion and planning future community goals. EMCs also represent a significant market for service and product providers. The research focussed on EMCs from the Indian Subcontinent based on religions and generations. It highlighted that first generation females lacking English and/or literacy (across religions and age groups) faced problems with services and issues around empowerment . The importance of improved access to healthcare was a strong theme. On investigating NHS staffs perceptions, five barriers were identified (Language barriers; Low-literacy; a Lack of understanding; Attitudes, gender and health beliefs; and Information retention) and that a female subgroup was particularly affected. This study sets out staffs perceptions of the aids currently employed and suggestions of what would help. It identified a (currently) low use of visual communication aids in adult-patient care and that pharmacist-patient communication in pharmacies was low. Ideally, staff would like patients to learn English and to use more low-cost visual communication aids. These findings lead to the development of innovative visual communication aids through inclusive and user-centred approaches and participatory design and brainstorming methods. This enabled the development of aids by considering the needs of NHS staff, EMCs lacking English and/or literacy and indigenous elderly people to promote better patient-staff communication including a take-away educational element for learning English at home.

The study concerns personas, especially personas created to represent users with the disability visual dyslexia. The digitalization of the community and the Riga declaration which states that government systems and services are to be accessible to everyone makes demands on how information is presented and conveyed.One way to accommodate a user group’s demand is by using representative personas. A representative persona ought to contain correct information about the user group, which is why the study seeks to find what information is needed in a persona which is meant to represent users with visual dyslexia. Interviews and respondent validation by respondents from the user group have been utilized in order to make sure the information is accurate and representative.The result of the study is three shorter descriptions of visual dyslexia which may be used as building blocks when personas meant to represent users with visual dyslexia are created. The result cannot be said to be generalizable, but it gives an idea as to why respondent validation needs to happen in order to produce results which are representable.

Studien rör personas och då speciellt personas avsedda att representera användare med funktionsnedsättningen visuell dyslexi. I och med digitaliseringen av samhället och EU beslutet om att digitala tjänster och material ska vara tillgängligt för alla medborgare oavsett eventuella funktionsnedsättningar ställs det krav på hur informationen ser ut och framförs.Ett sätt att anpassa efter vilka behov målgrupper kan ha är genom att använda sig av representativa personas. Av den anledningen är det vilken information som behöver finnas med i personas tänkta att representera användare med visuell dyslexi som har undersökts. Intervjuer och respondentvalidering av respondenter som tillhör målgruppen har använts för att se till att informationen blivit korrekt och representativ.Resultatet av studien är tre kortare beskrivningar av visuell dyslexi som kan användas som byggstenar när personas tänkta att representera användare med visuell dyslexi ska skapas. Resultatet kan inte sägas vara generaliserbart, men ger en fingervisning om att respondentvalidering behöver genomföras för att få till ett representativt resultat.

Ett socialt hållbart samhälle utgår från att skapa en miljö där alla individer respekteras och ges lika möjligheter att delta i samhället. Offentliga mötesplatser har en viktig funktion i den sociala hållbarheten med att vara inbjudande, trygga och tillgängliga. Människor med olika förutsättningar ska kunna vara delaktiga i samhället och offentliga miljöer behöver vara planerade efter fysisk tillgänglighet för att inte exkludera vissa grupper. Vilka grupper som kan vara delaktiga i det offentliga rummet påverkar hur samhället utvecklas över tid. Studien uppmärksammar hur tillfällig användning kan användas som metod för att föra arbetet med social hållbarhet framåt. Sommargågator är en tillfällig användning av en plats under sommarmånaderna när användningen temporärt ändras till fotgängares fördel genom att stänga av gatan för fordonstrafik. Konceptet sommargågata studeras i den här studien utifrån perspektivet social hållbarhet, genom att undersöka vilka möjligheter och nackdelar som kan uppstå vid införandet av tillfälliga gågator och hur dessa kan användas i samhällsplanering för att öka fysisk tillgänglighet och socioekonomisk inkludering. En fallstudie har utförts över Östra Ågatan i Uppsala för att undersöka möjligheter och nackdelar med att anordna en sommargågata utifrån social hållbarhet. Resultatet visar att en breddning av konceptet tillgänglighet möjliggör att offentliga platser blir mer inkluderande och flera grupper kan vara delaktiga i den offentliga miljön. Om detta sker kan tillfällig användning vara en metod för att skapa mötesplatser och öka tillgängligheten. Vidare är det grundläggande för att skapa en inkluderande plats att ett långsiktigt mål för platsen uttrycks och att balansen bibehålls mellan allmänna och kommersiella aktiviteter.

A socially sustainable society is based on creating an environment in which all individuals are respected and given equal opportunities to participate in society. Public spaces play an important role in the social sustainability of being involved, safe and accessible. People with different conditions should be able to participate in society and public environments need to be planned after physical accessibility so as not to exclude certain groups. Which groups that participate in the public space affects how society develops over time. The study draws attention to how temporary use can be used as a method to bring forward work on social sustainability. A summer pedestrian street is a temporary use of a place during the summer months when use is temporarily changed to pedestrian advantage by turning off the street for automobile traffic. The concept of summer pedestrian street is studied in this study from the perspective of social sustainability, by examining the possibilities and disadvantages that may arise when introducing temporary pedestrian streets and how these can be used in community planning to increase physical accessibility and socio-economic inclusion. Detta examensarbete har skrivits inom ämnet informationsdesign, som en del av kandidatprogrammet Informationsdesign med inriktning mot Rumslig gestaltning. Platsen som har studerats är Folkets park i Malmö, som i skrivande stund står inför en större ombyggnation. Detta examensarbete har både tagit utgångspunkt i parkens nuvarande, samt föreslagna utformning, vilket gjort att jag under processen behövt växla mellan dessa två olika perspektiv. Syftet med examensarbetet har varit att ta fram ett koncept som kan förbättra målgruppens möjligheter att orientera sig i parken efter den föreslagna ombyggnationen. Genom teorier, platsanalyser och intervjuer har människors beteendemönster vid informationssökning i rumsliga sammanhang undersökts, med särskild fokus på hur detta kan fungera i Folkets park. Dessa studier ligger till grund för det designförslag som presenteras i examensarbetet. Designförslaget är ett koncept som avser att ge en tydlig bild av vad parken innehåller, tydliggöra riktningar vid förflyttning mellan olika platser, samt indikera funktion. Konceptet bygger på principer för wayshowing och består mer specifikt av vägledande formelement, som utformats och placerats där de kan förtydliga vägen till parkens lekplatser för målgruppen.

This thesis has been conducted within the field of information design, as a part of the bachelor program Information Design with specialization in Spatial Design. The location that has been studied is the park “Folkets Park” in Malmö, Sweden, which at the moment currently is facing a major rebuilding. This thesis is hence based on both the parks current and proposed design, which has made it necessary to shift between these two different perspectives. The purpose of this thesis has been to develop a design concept that can improve the target audiences’ ability to orientate within the park following the proposed rebuilding. Through the use of theories, site analysis and interviews, has human behavior in search for information within spatial contexts been studied, with a particular emphasis on it’s implications for “Folkets Park”. These studies form the basis for the proposed design presented in the thesis. The proposed design intends to provide a well-defined idea and overview of what the park contains, to clarify directions when moving between different locations within the park, as well as to indicate it’s various functions. The design concept is founded on the principles of wayshowing and consists more specifically of directing form elements, which has been designed and located where they can clarify the way to the park’s playgrounds for the target audience.

Биотехничке науке - Пејзажна архитектура и хортикултура / Biotechnological sciences - Landscape architecture and horticukture

За потребе евалуације употребног потенцијала паркова Београда одабрана су четири парка: Ташмајдан, Беле воде, Вождовачки и Чубурски. Употребни потенцијал паркова је вреднован са два аспекта: просторног (анализа просторне позиционираности корисника и њихових активности) и сазнајног (вредновање паркова у односу на ставове корисника простора). За евалуацију употребног потенцијала паркова коришћени су следећи критеријуми: приступачност простора, интензитет коришћења простора, угодност простора и социјални аспект простора. Интензитет употребе паркова за одвијање различитих активности утврђен је компаративном анализом образаца коришћења паркова и временских периода у току дана, недеље и године. Добијени резултати указују да се квалитет паркова изражава кроз њихов употребни потенцијал, односно спектар људских активности које се на њима одвијају. Паркови који могу да се користе на различите начине су успешнији у односу на оне паркове који имају ограничену намену. Применом савремених технологија (техника GIS-а) формирана је база података која представља допринос разумевању и динамичком сагледавању употребе паркова, односно визуелизацији различитих структура корисника, као и облика и интензитета њихових активности у парковима. Обрасци коришћења паркова представљају базу података за формирање препорука и принципа који ће се имплементирати у процес пејзажног пројектовања паркова. Такође, установљен је модел посматрања понашања корисника и анализирања њихових потреба и очекивања, који превасходно има за циљ успостављање емпиријских сазнања о савременој употреби паркова.

▼ The ambition of the Swedish government is rapidly concentrating on the development of the renewable energy systems especially on wind energy, bio energy and solar energy. It has been observed on the growth of the production of electricity and heat from these three mentioned renewable energy systems. But, relatively in Sweden the share of production of electricity obtained from PV is quite smaller than the other two. The PV electricity production in Sweden comprises in a large scale of mainly the grid connected distributed PV systems and with a small number of installed solar parks. The aim of this paper is to analyze the viability of installing mid -size PV solar parks in Sweden and to simulate the effect of the proposed project in the village’s (Åled is the village where the proposed site is located) and the country’s electricity production. This study includes designing, simulation and financial analysis of different grid connected centralized mid -size capacities of PV solar parks of 250 kWp,500 kWp,1MWp and 2MWp. They are all fixed ground mounted systems. Moreover, it also discusses the main reasons that hinders decision makers, the PV complications that are connected to the grid, Sweden’s energy regulations particularly the emission regulation and the financial policies of PV. Also, study visit, telephone and email contacts have supplemented it. This study was done with the collaboration of Nyedal Solenergi, in which the proposed site was owned by the company and this paper will be a future guide for the investment of the mid-size PV solar park. According to the study a discussion has been made with the grid supplier (EON) in that area on the investment on one of the designed projects which are presented in this paper. The results of the study show that the effect of the proposed systems on the production of electricity in the village of Åled was between 2.68 – 21.4 % and the impact on the country’s PV electricity production was 0.2 – 1.58 %. And, the possibility of installing mid-size PV solar parks generally in Sweden particularly in the proposed site is possible and economically it is viable but not profitable for system capacities less than 1 MW. As the IRR found for all capacities is greater than the estimated WACC, hence each proposed capacity has the possibility of paying back all its investment costs in about 23 years. So, the profitability is very low in case of the 250 kWp and 500 kWp but for the others they have about 7-8 years of profitability. A sensitivity analysis also has shown the impact of initial investment costs, O & M costs and electricity export rate on the IRR, NPV and equity payback. The initial investment cost and electricity export rate were seen with high effect on the IRR, NPV and equity payback. ▼ With the recent passage of several initiatives, the Puget Sound region has introduced plans to improve the transit system with the introduction of light rail and bus rapid transit. Within the framework established by these initiatives, this thesis focuses on joint development of a site devoted to transit uses. The dual goal of this thesis was first, to develop a design for a specific site, and second, demonstrate the feasibility of similar transit-related development on similar sites elsewhere in the region. The first step in the development of the thesis was selection of a site. The prerequisites for site selection included: access to two or more modes of transit, include strong ties to the bicycle network, and likely feasibility for redevelopment. After cursory research, four sites were selected for further investigation: the Edmonds Ferry Terminal, the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal, the Aurora Village Transit Center, and the Shoreline Park-and-Ride. This thesis focuses on the Shoreline Park-and-Ride as the design developed on this site is likely adaptable to other suburban sites. The city of Shoreline is undergoing immense change, and has recently approved several master plans that address the pedestrian realm, promote dense development, improve the bicycle network and create green infrastructure plan. The Shoreline Park-and-Ride is located within the purview of these master plans and offers the potential to implement many of the strategies included in the Shoreline planning. This thesis examines the adaptation of the Shoreline park-and-ride into a dense, multi-modal hub for the emerging urban center of Shoreline. This area developed primarily after WW-II as an auto-oriented suburb typical throughout the United States. The primary challenges this thesis addresses have been: to create a transit center that caters users and residents; to promote multi-modal use; to address environmental concerns; to extend the time of use outside of peak transit hours; and to respond in a realistic way to the likely future of locations like this that will rely on bus transit. The major elements include a bus terminal, a parking garage, a bike-and-ride center, and commercial development. The site is located on the south east corner of North 192nd Street and Aurora Avenue. Although it is located on Aurora Avenue, the site is situated adjacent to a fine-grained residential fabric and is in close proximity to the Interurban Trail accessed from N. 192nd Street. The site is approximately 375 feet by 725 feet, with an area of 5.7 acres. The site is currently a paved 400-car parking lot and is basin shaped in section. There is a large change in topography from the rising 24 feet from the north east corner to the south east corner. 75% of the site is covered by impermeable surfaces. With the merging of the Aurora Village Transit Center, the bus terminal would serve 12 Metro and Community Transit bus routes with a current ridership of 4,000 passengers on weekdays. ▼ Effective open space is critical to the urban quality of life because it fosters environmental, social, and economic vitality. However, some designers, planners, and developers have a tendency to focus on only one of these aspects and, thus, create spaces that are monofunctional and inefficient over time. To ensure effective open spaces in cities, landscape architects must think strategically and employ design tactics that are multifunctional and perform environmentally, socially, and economically. My objective was to provide landscape architects with a framework that ensured effective open spaces through the manipulation of the urban surface. In this report, I explored how the urban surface could be used to create multifunctional, flexible, and adaptive solutions that informed and directed (re)development so that urban spaces had lasting value. A thorough literature review that explored concepts from Jane Jacobs, Alex Wall, and Ying-Yu Hung was used to create a theoretical framework that consisted of various tactics. The tactics were aesthetic, programmatic, contextual, and/or performative in nature, and the aggregation of these tactics in the urban surface catalyzed environmental, social, and economic vitality in urban open spaces. My methodology was iterative, cycling periods of research, design, and analysis in both group and individual settings. The theoretical framework was used to evaluate and inform design decisions, and the design decisions refined and validated the theoretical framework itself. The theoretical framework was first applied to two precedent studies through a series of diagrammatic mapping exercises. Then, the theoretical framework was applied to two collaborative, multidisciplinary redevelopment projects. The first project was the redevelopment of the Village Plaza shopping center in Manhattan, Kansas (MHK Project), and the second project was the revitalization of Downtown East in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the annual Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition, sponsored by the Urban Land Institute (ULI Competition). Both of these projects were evaluated and refined using the same diagrammatic mapping exercises. The effectiveness of using the theoretical framework as a guide for designing successful open spaces was validated with my team’s victory in the finalist round of the ULI Competition. The tactics in the theoretical framework offered pragmatic and multiscalar strategies that I incorporated into the open spaces that my team and I designed. Ultimately, I discovered that the role of surface was to accommodate, organize, structure, and facilitate the dynamic processes necessary for environmental, social, and economic vitality, which enhanced the urban quality of life and created an indisputable sense of place. ▼ Los Angeles long served as a center of technological and scientific innovation and production, from nineteenth-century agriculture to twentieth-century aerospace. City boosters used spectacle-filled promotional strategies to build and maintain technological supremacy through industry. Evaluating the city’s premier industry-focused science museum, the California Science Center, is therefore a must. The California Science Center is one of the most-visited museums in the United States and is in the historic Exposition Park. Yet, no thorough analysis has been done on its influential history. This dissertation is an interdisciplinary study of the California Science Center, from its 1870s beginnings as an agricultural fairground, to the construction of the world’s fair-inspired State Exposition Building in the 1910s, to its post-World War II redesign as the California Museum of Science and Industry. It uses regional history, design history, and museum studies to evaluate the people behind the museum’s construction and development, how they shaped exhibits, and the ideologies of progress they presented to the public. This dissertation builds on established historical components in Los Angeles’ image-making, primarily boosterism, spectacular display, and racism. The museum operated as part of the booster apparatus. Influential residents constructed Exposition Park and served on the museum board. In its earliest days, exhibits presented Anglo Los Angeles as a civilizing force through scientific farming. During the Cold War, boosters shifted to promote Los Angeles as a mecca of modern living, and the museum presented technology as safe and necessary to democracy. Local industries and designers featured centrally in this narrative. Boosters also used spectacle to ensure impact. Dioramas, Hollywood special effects, and simulated interactive experiences enticed visitors to return again and again. Meanwhile, non-white residents either became romanticized, as in the case of the Mexican Californios, or ignored, as seen in the museum’s surrounding neighborhood, primarily-African American, South Central. Anglo elites removed non-whites from the city’s narrative of progress. Ultimately, this dissertation shows that the museum communicated city leaders’ ideologies of progress and dictated exhibit narratives. This study adds nuance to image-making in Los Angeles, as well as furthering regional analysis of science museums in the United States.

▼ This PhD reveals a mode of practice within our studio DSDHA founded on a conversational process that, whilst structured, is dynamic. “Orbits & Trajectories” best describe the nature of the way our architecture is both understood and designed. A sense of “push-pull” is embodied in our city making and buildings. The PhD has revealed an overarching search for a kind of New Beauty founded on design values that stand for a sense of public good that aims to improve human conditions and that allows paths to cross, encouraging shared encounter and engagement; resulting in places which foster conversation and exchange. These are designed in a way that is responsive to place and environment, have an economy of means, and generate specificity. This architecture is designed to create a response, and to be responsive, and to engage with the wider world. An architecture that answers back, that is almost awkward in its modernity and that tries to embody imperfect contradictions; • solid, three-dimensional but best understood through movement; • ever-changing when experienced yet creating duration and persistence over time; • preoccupied with physicality and of matter being “made” (in terms of materiality and craft) yet irreconcilably connected to people, emotions, beliefs; • above all it is shaped by values and culture. And somehow being “authored” whilst so clearly being the product of collaboration. A sense of “push-pull” is also found in the way DSDHA has evolved its practice. DSDHA is a place where ideas and people collide, in a choreography of chance and purpose. Through analysing the way we work, our influences and the work that we make, characteristics have been revealed that we are part of a tradition of “creating socially-minded architecture”, that we never make the same building twice, and that every project is underscored with a research agenda. In order to arrive at this architecture we find the need for reflection, of bringing self-awareness to the way one choses to practice. Underscoring the process is the need for agency and participation. Until recently, the “practice” and “academic” sides of DSDHA were parallel endeavours, whereas now a new consciousness has informed bringing them together to create a culture of the studio is, like any design, authored. In particular, the way we collaborate has evolved via our design methodology. This is based on workshops, using research as a driver to generate moments of resistance or collisions where agency pushes design forward. Individually there has been the revelation that one must always try “to act upon an idea” and insert oneself into the project at key points to ensure its potential. ▼ Social media services and applications enable billions of users to share an unprecedented amount of social information, which is further augmented by location and collocation information from mobile phones, and can be aggregated to provide an accurate digital representation of the social world. This dissertation argues that extracted social knowledge from this wealth of information can be embedded in the design of novel distributed, socially-aware applications and services, consequently improving system response time, availability and resilience to attacks, and reducing system overhead. To support this thesis, two research avenues are explored. First, this dissertation presents Prometheus, a socially-aware peer-to-peer service that collects social information from multiple sources, maintains it in a decentralized fashion on user-contributed nodes, and exposes it to applications through an interface that implements non-trivial social inferences. The system's socially-aware design leads to multiple system improvements: 1) it increases service availability by allowing users to manage their social information via socially-trusted peers, 2) it improves social inference performance and reduces message overhead by exploiting naturally-formed social groups, and 3) it reduces the opportunity of attackers to influence application requests. These performance improvements are assessed via simulations and a prototype deployment on a local cluster and on a worldwide testbed (PlanetLab) under emulated application workloads. Second, this dissertation defines the projection graph, the result of decentralizing a social graph onto a peer-to-peer system such as Prometheus, and studies the system's network properties and how they can be used to design more efficient socially-aware distributed applications and services. In particular: 1) it analytically formulates the relation between centrality metrics such as degree centrality, node betweenness centrality, and edge betweenness centrality in the social graph and in the emerging projection graph, 2) it experimentally demonstrates on real networks that for small groups of users mapped on peers, there is high association of social and projection graph properties, 3) it shows how these properties of the (dynamic) projection graph can be accurately inferred from the properties of the (slower changing) social graph, and 4) it demonstrates with two search application scenarios the usability of the projection graph in designing social search applications and unstructured P2P overlays. These research results lead to the formulation of lessons applicable to the design of socially-aware applications and distributed systems for improved application performance such as social search, data dissemination, data placement and caching, as well as for reduced system communication overhead and increased system resilience to attacks.

▼ Around one percent of the Swedish population is defined as visually impaired and ten percent of them are classified as blind (Funka, n.d.; SRF, 2017a). A study shows that the prevalence of nearsightedness will increase to around half the population in the world in 2050 (Holden et. al., 2016). This suggests an increased need for solutions that work for people with reduced vision, not only for visually impaired but for a large group of the population. The aim of the project is to conceptualize a technological mainstream solution that supports people when shopping for groceries. The focus is on making this solution accessible for people with low vision. The project was planned based on the human-centered design process described by IDEO.org (2015), with an overall process divided into three phases: inspiration, ideation, and implementation. In the first phase, inspiration, a literature review was done, different field studies and other research methods were carried out. The outcome of the phase was three personas, two scenarios, and a design specification. During the second phase, ideation, the project scope was narrowed down – focusing on physical grocery stores (excluding online stores) and on conceptualizing a smartphone application. An ideation workshop was conducted, followed by concept creation, paper prototyping, scenario writing, user evaluations and a final concept selection. In the last phase, implementation, follow up feedback sessions were held and a simulation test of the final concept was held. Visualizations and presentation of the final concept were done. A list of summarized design principles was created, as support for further work on designing the application for low vision users. The final concept is based on a smartphone application that supports the customer through shopping list management, aisle navigation, item selection and item scanning, for a seamless customer experience for both people with full and low vision. The technology that will be utilized is Pricer AB's electronic shelf labels (ESL) with item positioning, customer navigation, and individual flashing light, combined with the grocery store online database with item descriptions and images. Here follows an example of how the interaction could look like for someone with low vision: <em>He always prepares his shopping list before heading to the store, this way he knows the shopping will be easier for him. In the store, he gets all items on the list presented in the correct order of the store, in that way he knows what to search for. When looking for soy sauce from his shopping list he has trouble remembering where the section is, so he checks it up with the navigation. He realizes that it was just around the corner of where he just passed by. Once at the section he is presented with a list of different soy sauces in the application, matching his location, previous purchases and the soy sauce on his shopping list.
