▼ Disability is a core concept in rehabilitation sciences, and specifically in occupational therapy. Critical disability theory challenges the ways that disability is understood, and disability scholars have challenged rehabilitation professionals to reconsider how they conceptualize disability. The way that disability is given meaning is central to the profession of occupational therapy because it can influence client-therapist interactions, treatment plans and interventions, research agendas, services offered, and the development of policy. In my research, I address the need to examine how disability has been given meaning in occupational therapy. I adopt an overarching critical theoretical approach informed by
social constructionism to examine the meaning of disability in the profession of occupational therapy. The objectives of the research include examining: a) how disability is presented in occupational therapy literature; b) what this tells us about the ideological, political, and theoretical underpinnings of disability; and c) what the dominant discourses of disability are in occupational therapy literature. I draw on methods developed by Fairclough to conduct a critical
discourse analysis of highly influential Canadian occupational therapy texts (Muriel Driver Memorial Lectureships). The analysis is presented in two parts, discussing: (1) how disability has been broadly defined or described in the texts through written language and visual images; and (2) the existential meaning of disability in the texts. The implications of text and dominant discursive practices related to disability on the professional practices of occupational therapy are discussed. Critical examination of how disability is conceptualized in occupational therapy allows for the consideration of alternative views of disability, which are likely to influence future occupational therapy theory, practice, and knowledge.

▼ There is disagreement in the literature on the influence of texting and text language on adolescents’ literacies. Some research has indicated that familiarity with text language will negatively influence social and academic writing both in
process and in product. Other research has indicated that there is no influence on accomplished writers and that texting could potentially positively influence children in learning to spell because they are using three components of literacy, as defined
by the National Reading Panel, when they text. This paper addresses these very divergent studies and examines the adolescent homeschoolers’ use of text language in their social and academic lives. A constructionism epistemology was used for this research
study. The main theories for analysis were social constructionism and sociocultural learning. The findings suggest that while more research is needed, homeschooled adolescents are modifying language to fit their perceived audience and situational
communications.

▼ This multidisciplinary study, which includes
Practical Theology and also insights from Psychology and Sociology,
investigates experiences of abuse in
social structures such as the
church. My epistemological approach is
social constructionist.
Psychological theories employed are the
social constructivist
personal construct theory of George Kelly and Gergen's
social
constructionist theorization. Kelly's theory posits that people
construct their own realities in
social settings, such as family,
culture and everyday
social structures. This takes place on a
cognitive level through the nervous system. By means of Gergen’s
social constructionist theorization the role that
social
constructions (beliefs and practices) play in (often unintentional)
abusive practices in
social structures as well as the experiences
of victims, is explained. Sociological theories included are Berger
and Luckmann’s theory of the
social construction of reality as well
as Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory, which emphasizes agency
(human action) and structure tensions in
social structures. I argue
that processes such as typification, reification and structuration,
as explained by these theorists can result in abusive actions and

in groups. In addition, the lives and teachings of Jesus and Paul
are examined from a
social constructionist perspective. A
qualitative investigation was conducted with participants who claim
to have experienced abuse in groups. Their stories are used as case

discourses, for example patriarchal worldviews and belief systems
which go unexamined, are often imposed on others which results in
experiences of abuse. The study is therefore embedded in a

constructed in
social interaction and relationship and should be
open to review and change should the need arise, prompted by, for

abusive. Underlying dominant discourses should be exposed, since
they contribute to practices that cause psychological,

physical traumatisation and consequences for people. Pastoral care
is often neglected because these actions and behaviours are

▼ According to Ulrich Beck's theory of reflexive modernisation people today suffer from insecurity and constant risks in all aspects of their life. A major factor dictating their individual biographies is their work. Work in today's world has become an essential ingredient in defining personal identities and relationships. For Beck as a consequence of the modern work environment new insecurities and inequalities in comparison to the industrial epoch have emerged; a development of risk biographies. This thesis examines how international professionals in the Greater Helsinki Region construct and negotiate the meaning of their work and the organisation of their work. Specifically, through the critical discourse analytic method of Norman Fairclough the focus of the research is on the impact of power and ideology of new capitalism on individual discourses. This is studied by exploring whether a shift emerges in the participants' discourses of their work during interviews pertaining to the new financial crises of the late 2000s as well as the impact of the effects of the information age. The data is supported by the method of reflexive social processes of participant observation. The analysis of the interviews shows that the individuals, in contrast to the theory of reflexive modernity, did not present themselves as insecure nor facing constant risk in their individual discourse of work; even during discussions of the new financial crisis. Instead, it was discovered that the participants constructed themselves as in control of their biographies, both disciplined and self-managed, in contrast to the volatility of the market forces. The observed feelings of self-management are in accordance with Fairclough's original thesis and demonstrate that the participants have internalised new capitalism's ideology of neo-liberalism, further propelling the cause of the capitalist market forces in their work places. By internalising this ideology the participants were found to be experiencing alienation, predicted by Karl Marx, struggling with the loss of meaning towards their work, as described by Max Weber and at risk of anomie discussed by Emile Durkheim.

▼ This thesis examines if there is any differences in how gender is produced in the Administrative Court’s application of care of young persons (special provisions) act. To do that, we’ve studied 40 judgements that all has the requirement “social destructive behavior”. A social destructive behavior means that the young’s behavior is considered to differ from the basic norms in the society. The deviant behavior may be that the young person socialize in inappropriate environments or through the behavior exposes the young’s health and development. The judgements we’ve been studying are from 2017 and 1996, because we want to see if the discourse has possibly changed over the past twenty years. We’ve used a qualitative method, the critical discursive analyze, to visualize power structures regarding the construction of gender. The thesis is based on the theories social constructionism, discourse analysis and gender theory. By using these method, theories and data, we can note that differences are made between gender and sexuality.

▼ The aim of the study was to explore the
constructions and meanings around madness/mental illness among a
group of young professionals in order to broaden the dialogue
around mental illness to include the voices of a certain section of
the community. The current dialogue around mental illness is
dominated by the view that madness/mental illness is the domain of
scientifically trained professionals. The aim of the study was to
explore the constructions of those not part of a mental health
profession and those not suffering from mental illness and how
these constructions may influence their behaviour towards those
suffering from mental illness. The epistemological framework of the
study falls into a
social constructionist perspective. This
epistemological approach allows for the exploration of previously
taken for granted truths. When adhering to this approach the
function of research is to explore a particular version of reality
in an embedded context and language seen as the structuring aspect
of
social reality. From this approach a
discourse analysis was done
using the transcripts of audiotaped interviews with the
participants. The four participants chosen for the study fell into
the 23-26 years age group brackets, had finished tertiary education
and have started working on a professional career. None of the
participants have had any formal contact with mental health
services or professionals or those suffering from mental illness.
In the process of analysing the texts five discourses were
identified and discussed. The first of these discourses was the
scientific
discourse around mental illness in which madness is
constructed mostly as an illness with genetic, chemical or
emotional causes. The knowledge and expertise of mental health
professionals is seen as important to the general public as they
seem to have little knowledge on the meaning of mental illness
themselves. The second
discourse that was identified was mental
illness as the domain of professionals and mental institutions.
Most of the respondents seemed comfortable with this idea and used
distancing strategies in order to explain their non-involvement in
the care of the mentally ill. Mental illness as individual
experience was discussed next and in this
discourse mental illness
was seen as an exclusive experience to which few except the
sufferer has access. The fourth
discourse discussed was the mental
illness as unknown
discourse. In this
discourse madness/mental
illness, those suffering from it and the treatment thereof, is a
mystery to those who are not part of these experiences. The final
discourse discussed was the mental illness as bad
discourse where
those suffering from mental illness were constructed as dangerous,
possibly violent, unpredictable and damaging. During the analysis
of the data it was found that the majority of the respondents used
techniques to distance themselves from involvement of the mentally
ill and ascribed to the
discourse that madness/mental illness is
the domain of mental health professionals only.

participants have had any formal contact with mental health
services or professionals or those suffering from mental illness.
In the process of analysing the texts five discourses were
identified and discussed. The first of these discourses was the
scientific
discourse around mental illness in which madness is
constructed mostly as an illness with genetic, chemical or
emotional causes. The knowledge and expertise of mental health
professionals is seen as important to the general public as they
seem to have little knowledge on the meaning of mental illness
themselves. The second
discourse that was identified was mental
illness as the domain of professionals and mental institutions.
Most of the respondents seemed comfortable with this idea and used
distancing strategies in order to explain their non-involvement in
the care of the mentally ill. Mental illness as individual
experience was discussed next and in this
discourse mental illness
was seen as an exclusive experience to which few except the
sufferer has access. The fourth
discourse discussed was the mental
illness as unknown
discourse. In this
discourse madness/mental
illness, those suffering from it and the treatment thereof, is a
mystery to those who are not part of these experiences. The final
discourse discussed was the mental illness as bad
discourse where
those suffering from mental illness were constructed as dangerous,
possibly violent, unpredictable and damaging. During the analysis
of the data it was found that the majority of the respondents used
techniques to distance themselves from involvement of the mentally
ill and ascribed to the
discourse that madness/mental illness is
the domain of mental health professionals only.

▼ This research is a
discourse analysis of a christian “coloured” youth group, from the area of Mitchell‘s Plain, Cape Town. The aim of the analysis is to explore the ways in which the interlocutors construct their identities and gender positions and how they are able to affirm, challenge and perpetuate dominant discourses. The role of this context, namely the
social and religious context is pivotal to shaping this interaction. The analysis of the data uses the appraisal framework particularly the attitudinal and engagement systems to analyse how the interlocutors strategically communicate their attitudes, evaluations, feelings and judgements. Ultimately, this research shows how the males and females use language to negotiate identities and socially position themselves. In addition, the research indicates that the male interlocutors in most instances exert a strong influence on the discussions, which result in females showing tendencies to allow for the male ideologies to dictate, thus perpetuating the dominant ideologies about male and female behaviour

▼ The developing interest which led to this research project started when I was employed as a counsellor and a counsellor educator in an Islamic faith-based academic institution in Malaysia. Within these positions, I noticed that my encounters with religious and spiritual values in counselling and teaching practice did not match with what I experienced in the counsellor education programme. This is perhaps due to the Malaysian counselling practices that had its history from Euro-American counselling models which emphasise the practice of objective and value-neutral stance. Within these models, counsellors’ conceptual and theoretical understandings of counselling were strongly shaped and developed. Therefore, the study draws on this history and questions the effects of this stance in Malaysian counselling practices. In particular, this study explores how Malaysian Muslim counsellors are positioned when religious and spiritual values intersect with their counselling knowledge. This study employed poststructuralist and
social constructionist frameworks as its theoretical and methodological base. Positioning theory, deconstruction, power/knowledge, language, and the making of meaning are some of the approaches used in this study. As a mixed methods project, the study used a survey and interview conversations to generate research data. The survey was to gain general views about participants’ perceptions of the topic researched, and the interviews were to investigate the ways taken by counsellors in working with religious and spiritual values. Both quantitative and qualitative findings show that there are similar understandings among participants about the lack of training on how to address religious and spiritual values in counselling, and the gap that exists between counselling models, and religious practices. In qualitative findings, these participants reported that they have to find their own ways to weave both counselling and religious knowledges together in order to help clients. Hence, through this study, a religiously sensitive counselling approach that uses a value-investigating practice is suggested.

O discurso construcionista

The aim of this study was to examine how the members of Agape came to construct themselves as a healing community. An ecosystemic epistemology and social constructionism were used as a lens by which to view the events unfolding at Agape Healing Community and to illuminate how meanings, expressed through language and ritual, are negotiated and shared. Discourse analysis was used as an analytical tool to infer meaning from the participants’ speaking and to locate these discourses in the fabric that constitutes South African society.

▼ Abstract The aim of this study is to illustrate how people with drug abuse problems are being depicted in drug courts, by examining the statements of the social welfare board and the individual, and the drug courts evaluation and judgement. These statements are being examined from power theories and a social constructionist perspective. Furthermore, the study aims to examine how these statements relate to each other. The study has a qualitative approach based on a discourse analytical method with following analytical tools; modality, processes, terminology, passive sense and nominalization. Based on the social constructionist perspective, the language in the verdicts is considered as both constructed and constructing. The empirical data consists of two verdicts concerning compulsory drug treatment, acquired from a drug court located in a medium-sized city in Sweden. In conclusion, the parties' statements may include varying degrees of truth and credibility, depending on structure and word choices. Further, different groups, in this case the social welfare board, the drug court (lawyers) and doctors, throughout the study is given the role of so-called privileged speakers with a special interpretative prerogative, whose expertise and opinions are often a kind of unchallenged knowledge. It is also evident how there are power differences even between these groups. I the two analyzed cases, the results show that different parties have the primary interpretative prerogative. Common to both cases is that the person with drug abuse problems are attributed to the least power, credibility and degree of truth, and thus end up at the bottom of this chain. A key finding in the study is that people with drug abuse problems are constructed in different ways in the verdicts, depending on the choice of words, sentence structure and current discourse. The language in the verdicts becomes a power tool that create, recreate and maintain beliefs about the abuser. Compulsory treatment, discourse analysis, social constructionism, power, drug abuser

▼ Titel: Fostran som pedagogiskt projekt. Bilden av ”problembarnet” i statens offentliga utredningar. (The bringing up of pupils as an educational project. The image of ”the problem child” in governmental committees).
This study focuses on the image of the problem child as it appears in two texts (from the 1940s and 1970s) of governmental committees on Public Health (SOU) and the new school law (Ds 2009:25, will be implemented in July 2011). By image is meant that the image of the problem child is constructed for specific purposes rather than being “found” in an objective reality.
The aim is to describe, analyse and compare discourses on “the problem child” as they appear in the texts. The method used is an application of discourse analysis based on a social constructionist approach and the work of Michel Foucault. Among the Foucauldian concepts used are discourse, governmentality, power and subjectification. In the final chapter possibilities and limitations of Foucauldian analysis are discussed. The discourses that influences the image of the problem child, in the different texts, have three major continuities operating, the talk of a school which aim is to not separate the pupils, the use of the term behavioural disorders and finally the pedagogical methods that individualises, differentiates, compares, places in hierarchy as well as shuts out pupils from the classroom. The emphasize of the teachers role to give knowledge to the pupils rather than bringing them up separates Ds 2009:25 from the two SOU-texts where the emphasize is placed on the bringing up of the pupils. Potential effects concerning the problem child because of this change in the pedagogical discourse are discussed.

This thesis aplies Faircloughs Critical Theory of Discourse or Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to juridical texts about the judge. We initiate the thesis with a review of the works written on CDA and the numbering of its main theoretical postulates. After that, we present the corpus of texts we work on, which has been segmented thematically. The last part focuses on the actional meaning, which deals with the theory of discourse genres and intertextuality; the representational meaning, that approaches the relation between social structure and agency; and, finally, the identificational meaning, in which we deal with matters of identitity of the judge placed in the discourses we analyse, specially in the metaphores about this professional, and also matters of discourse style. The methodology used in this work was that of Faircloughs Analysing Discourse (2003). This thesis aims to fill a gap in the Brazilian bibliography, where there are no works about the role of judge in Discourse Analysis. The results of the research revealed conflicting discursive constructions about the judge, and showed how the things said about the judge obey an order of discourse (Foucault) which is linked to an ideological discipline about this professional which is never clear, but always implicit.

▼ The term “multiculturalism” has been deployed in public and political discourses with its meanings and ideological assumptions often not being explicitly stated or critically discussed. Furthermore, multiculturalism is intricately intertwined with immigration and ethnocultural diversity issues in Canada. The current Conservative federal government has implemented extensive overhaul to immigration policies since 2008. Based on a
social constructionist framework, the aims of this dissertation are: 1) to present a critical discussion on Canadian multiculturalism, its meanings, and its connection to immigration and diversity issues historically and in recent years, and and 2) to examine empirically how recent immigration and refugee policy changes have been represented in the media, with an analytical emphasis on the portrayal of immigrants and refugees. The first aim is accomplished in the introduction. I first briefly review the historical context of immigration regulations and the institutionalisation of official multiculturalism. I then present multiculturalism as being situated in liberal democratic ideology, and as lived ideology or “a society’s way of life” and “common sense” (Billig et al., 1998). Finally, I conceptualise multiculturalism as a “contested space” (George, 2011) where political, academic, and public discourses intersect, and discuss some of the prevalent arguments and claims made about its societal impact. For the second aim, I employ a discursive analytical approach to examine media representations of the major immigration policy changes introduced in 2012 after the Conservative Party won its first majority government. I demonstrate how the ample coverage of immigration and refugee frauds constructs an immigration and refugee system in crisis, which enables policy changes for more restrictive immigration and refugee admission to be positioned as pragmatic, rational, and commonsensical interventions. Moreover, I argue that the prevailing immigration
discourse is based on neoliberal ideology and market logic, which selects the “right” immigrants in economic terms and gives a primary role to the market in this selection. The national inclusion and belonging of immigrants is, thus, reduced to their economic contributions, while immigrants are simultaneously cast as the non-contributing internal “others.” Shifting representations of Canadian identity are variously mobilised to support or contest the emphasis on market-driven immigration.

Totalt intervjuades sex kvinnliga chefer i semistrukturerade intervjuer.
The purpose of this paper is to study how female managers constructs leadership and to answer in what ways leadership can be constructed together with what conditions and expectations that exists based on the women´s constructs. Six female managers where interviewed in semi structured interviews. From the interview transcripts three interpretation repertoires and three subject positions where identified. The identified interpretation repertoires where; “the professional teamwork”, “the demanding leadership” and “the male and female in leadership”. The subject positions where; “The manager as a colleague”, “the manager as the ultimately responsible” and “the mean woman”. The study was conducted with discourse-psychological and social constructionistic theory and method. The result of the study showed the identification of three interpretation repertoires and three subject positions within which different aspects of how leadership was constructed and how they can be interpreted in relation to expectations and terms.

Constructions of masculinity among black South African

▼ The aim of this study is to explore some of the ways
in which masculinity is constructed in relation to HIV/AIDS. A
review of literature about masculinity describes a normative
masculinity where being a man is often associated with harmful
practices. The review also shows that such a normative
conceptualisation of masculinity has been contested through a call
for less rigid and simplistic descriptions of what it means to be a
man. The literature review also shows that research that
specifically addresses the intersection between masculinity and
HIV/AIDS tends to provide a marginalising and negative account of
men’s position in the epidemic. However, it also shows a growing
awareness of the inadequacy of such an approach. The present study
aims to critically explore the ways in which masculinity is
constructed by a group of men living with HIV. More specifically it
explores how men living with HIV experience their masculinity and
whether their HIV status impacts on their views of themselves as
men. The study is located in a
social constructionist framework and
utilises a qualitative methodological approach.
Discourse analysis
was used to analyse the text produced during focus group
discussions with a group of black South African men who are living
with HIV. From the
discourse analysis, six discourses were
identified as operating in the text. The first three discourses can
be described as contributing to an idealised or normative
construction of masculinity. This idealised masculinity is
constructed by the participants as something that is valued and to
which men need to conform. At the same time it is also constructed
by the participants as something that men cannot always attain and
that they experience as a burden in that they continually need to
engage in actions that affirm their position as ‘real’ men. This
tension is constructed as a sense of not being able to ‘live up to’
hegemonic notions of masculinity that participants describe as
being valued by their partners, family members and others in their
community. </p > This construction of masculinity was spoken
of as operating in a restrictive manner, where men are limited in
the kind of actions available to them, such as seeking support or
acknowledging their vulnerability to HIV. Specific discursive acts
were mentioned as contributing to this idealised masculinity, such
as getting married, having children, being a financial provider,
having multiple sexual partners and being in a position of
authority in the home. In the last three discourses that were
identified the manner in which HIV contributes to constructions of
masculinity became a more prominent feature of the discourses.
Participants constructed HIV as a life event that interferes with
conforming to notions of a normative masculinity. This emerged in
talk of how illness or other periods of vulnerability disrupts the
notion of men being invulnerable. It also emerged in talk of how
living with HIV complicates attaining traditional signifiers of
masculinity, such as getting married or having children. The…

Exploring the reasons white middle-class women remain

▼ In this study I qualitatively explore how women who
choose not to have children account for this choice in the South
African context. I consider the reasons for women to remain
childfree and the changing discourses of femininity that enable
women to make the choice not to have children. I am also concerned
with the possible implications of this choice for women’s
interpersonal relationships. This study is conducted from a
feminist
social constructionist framework. Dominant discourses of
femininity revolve around motherhood, which is considered to be the
most important role. Motherhood is believed to be a “natural”
identity. Mothers are highly regarded in most societies; they are
perceived to be devoted to the care of others and to be
self-sacrificing. Although most societies consider motherhood to be
an essential feature of femininity, it can also cause ambivalent
feelings and not all women wish to take on the role of motherhood.
The number of women who choose to remain childfree is growing in
various societies. Women increasingly have the power to choose
whether they want to remain childfree. Through resisting discourses
that meld femininity with motherhood, childfree women create
alternative discourses that have the potential to change
constructions of femininity. I used feminist
social constructionism
to endeavour to understand the ways in which women’s realities
inform their decision not to have children. I also explore how
society serves to either problematise or promote this decision.
Finally, I attempt to gain a deeper understanding of how being
female and childfree impacts on women’s beliefs about themselves.
Interview data from semi-structured interviews conducted with women
who choose to remain childfree are analysed using thematic
analysis. The women interviewed were white and middle class and
were found via convenience and snowball sampling. The women
participating in the study report various reasons for remaining
childfree. Freedom from childcare responsibility and the resulting
greater opportunity for self3 fulfilment is shown to be one of the
strongest reasons for remaining childfree. Other important reasons
include unequal labour division in the family, concerns about the
physical aspects of childbirth and recovery, life partners’
acceptance of the choice to remain childfree as well as early
socialising experiences. Other reasons cited less frequently
include the negative impact of childrearing on women’s emotional
well-being, concerns regarding the overpopulation of the planet and
a general dislike of children. Two of the themes identified in the
text are not evident in the existing literature. The first of these
relates to the fact that the women participating in the study do
not regard motherhood as the central feature of femininity.
Instead, they tend to associate femininity with the act of
nurturing, rather than with the act of mothering. These women are
able to strongly identify with the female role, as they do not
believe that choosing to remain childfree conflicts with their
female gender…

▼ The focus of this dissertation is to explore
contextually relevant ideas through conversation around behaviour
problems, specifically bullying, experienced in primary schools
situated in the township of Mamelodi. The study explores the
relationship around bullying between the members of the school
staff involved with the children, the children identified as
manifesting bullying behaviour, their families and any relevant
community system or individuals as identified by the research
participants themselves through conversation. It focuses on
providing a description of experiences around bullying behaviour
facing the participants by exploring their own perspectives and
meanings around their situation and any possible solutions that
they may offer. The focus is of an exploratory and descriptive
nature to provide a basis for an intervention that is contextually
relevant to this community by acknowledging these locally
constructed discourses. An ecological approach within a postmodern
social constructionist theoretical backdrop is chosen for this
study. It is an approach that emphasises the importance of context
and the
social constructionist influence emphasises the importance
of language. Three primary schools in the Mamelodi Township were
approached to participate. One ecological case study from one of
the three schools is used in the analysis to explore the aims of
this research. Data was gathered through semi-structured open-ended
interviews.
Discourse analysis is used to construct the various
discourses emerging from the conversations resulting from the
interviews. Through the
discourse analysis the various meanings,
experience or understanding around bullying are constructed. The
interaction of these various discourses and influence that they
have on each other are also considered. The possible influence of
background discourses of the wider community and society are
included. These discourses are presented not as truths but as a
plausible a construction of an ecology of bullying grounded in
background and events. Using theses discourses some of the possible
implications for a contextually and locally relevant intervention
programme and further ideas for research are suggested. As the
study focuses on contextual relevance, arguments around indigenous
psychology, cross cultural research and the role of interpreters
are also considered.

▼ This study investigated what occurred when a group of nine to eleven fourth graders were given the space to engage in student-driven discussion during an in-school book club. Data were collected during a seven-month case study and included
recorded observations, interviews, field notes, and student artifacts. Data were analyzed and the study was designed using a social constructionist framework. Thematic analysis was used to examine the students’ meaning-making processes and products as
well as what students shared about themselves as readers. Implications derived from findings suggest that students move beyond the book and into their own lives when allowed to control the book discussions. Additionally, students used academic norms as
well as personal relationships when describing whom they felt was a reader in their class. Books chosen for ownership were made based on factors including pop-culture, previous knowledge of authors or topics, and the choices of other
classmates.

▼ The aim of this study is to explore some of the ways in
which masculinity is constructed in relation to HIV/AIDS. A review
of literature about masculinity describes a normative masculinity
where being a man is often associated with harmful practices. The
review also shows that such a normative conceptualisation of
masculinity has been contested through a call for less rigid and
simplistic descriptions of what it means to be a man. The
literature review also shows that research that specifically
addresses the intersection between masculinity and HIV/AIDS tends
to provide a marginalising and negative account of men’s position
in the epidemic. However, it also shows a growing awareness of the
inadequacy of such an approach. The present study aims to
critically explore the ways in which masculinity is constructed by
a group of men living with HIV. More specifically it explores how
men living with HIV experience their masculinity and whether their
HIV status impacts on their views of themselves as men. The study
is located in a
social constructionist framework and utilises a
qualitative methodological approach.
Discourse analysis was used to
analyse the text produced during focus group discussions with a
group of black South African men who are living with HIV. From the
discourse analysis, six discourses were identified as operating in
the text. The first three discourses can be described as
contributing to an idealised or normative construction of
masculinity. This idealised masculinity is constructed by the
participants as something that is valued and to which men need to
conform. At the same time it is also constructed by the
participants as something that men cannot always attain and that
they experience as a burden in that they continually need to engage
in actions that affirm their position as ‘real’ men. This tension
is constructed as a sense of not being able to ‘live up to’
hegemonic notions of masculinity that participants describe as
being valued by their partners, family members and others in their
The…

▼ In this thesis, I explore how academics with and without formal leadership positions experience and understand themselves as leaders in their everyday working contexts. The thesis both responds to and advances recent criticisms that the majority of leadership studies in higher education tend to exclusively focus on people in formal leadership positions, with an instrumental focus on ‘what works’ as effective leadership. These studies tend to take for granted who counts as a leader, and that knowledge situated in one context can be generalised and applied to another.
I conducted qualitative interviews with 19 academics from diverse backgrounds and positions at a university in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Social constructionism, poststructuralism and Bakhtinian concepts were drawn upon to create a discursive-dialogic approach as an analytical framework for my study. This approach enabled me to examine academics’ accounts of leadership in relation to the discursive and dialogic process of identity construction as well as the broader micro-politics of higher education.
From my analysis, I identified three recurrent narratives of leadership prevalent in my participants’ accounts, namely, legitimate leadership, heroic leadership, and effective leadership. I argue that these three dominant narratives shaped how individual academics made sense of, and talked about, leadership in their everyday lives. These narratives were pivotally implicated in how academics constructed their own and others’ identities as particular kinds of leaders. The thesis concludes with implications and recommendations for institutions, academics, and leadership researchers, proposing new ways of conceptualising leadership in higher education.

▼ This thesis presents a discursive analysis of constructions and representations of primary caregiving fathers in popular parenting texts and Australian newsprint media. Primary caregiving fathers are increasingly the focus of both academic and cultural interest and this interest stems from the argument that there are shifting understandings and practices of fatherhood. Fathers are argued to be shifting away from traditional, provider models of fathering, toward a new and involved model where fathers can express a more nurturing side.
In addition to the changing nature and practice of fatherhood, there have been arguments that this change reflects and contributes to simultaneous changes in masculinities. Hegemonic masculinity – the form of masculinity that maintains men’s dominance – has long informed traditional definitions of fathers as the distant, financial provider. However, the concept of hegemonic masculinity cannot account for the experiences of primary caregiving fathers, as these fathers typically step away from the financial provider role. The literature therefore argues that there has been a shift away from hegemonic forms of masculinity and towards one that has been termed a “caring masculinity”.
The analyses in this thesis draw on a
social constructionist and discursive approach to explore the constructions of masculinities and primary caregiving fathers in order to better understand and account for the experiences of these fathers. Taking this approach allowed for a focus on how fatherhood is a complex cultural and ideological construction that is continuously negotiated and constructed. In particular, three analytic chapters are concerned with the constructions and accounts of primary caregiving fathers in parenting texts published for these fathers and Australian newsprint media. The analyses focus on interpretative repertoires, ideological dilemmas and membership categorisation devices deployed in the data. The analytic findings indicate that:
• Despite claims to encourage and promote primary caregiving fathers, parenting texts suggest very specific ways in which it is deemed appropriate for men to take on the primary caregiving role.
• Media accounts of primary caregiving fathers rest upon a principle/practice dichotomy of endorsing new and involved fathering in theory, but reproduce considerations that suggest it is unrealistic and impracticable.
• The category – primary caregiving father – is fluid and flexible and can be reworked to position these fathers as both within and transgressive of normative masculine and fathering boundaries.
This thesis concludes by discussing the implications of these constructions in relation to contemporary conceptualisations and practices of fathering and masculinities.

Exploring the

▼ The regularly shifting positions between frames of individual responsibility and environmental impact characterising the obesity discourse in the media raises suspicion that the purported ‘obesity epidemic’ may be a social construction as opposed to a bona fide public health concern. Should this be the case, it prompts the question, who would go to the lengths of creating a global perception of being overweight as a life-threatening disease and constructing a global ‘epidemic? Additionally, what could be the possible justifications for doing so? This study is an effort to determine whether the ‘obesity epidemic’ is indeed a social construction. This is of concern, because public representations of obesity not only inform the public of medical or biomedical statistics but endorse shame-based narratives that may impact negatively upon the social identities and lives of people by creating meanings that influence cultural understandings of fatness and health. This study employs frame analysis, conceptualizing media frames as independent variables influencing the nature of the obesity discourse. By employing set criteria, eighty articles were selected from various high-profile South African English news sources with an online presence, representing a broad cross-section of the daily news provided to the South African population. A coding frame of key discourses was developed and coded for frame analysis in the QDA Miner software program. The study found that not only is the ‘obesity epidemic’ a social construction, but the result of propaganda executed through the media by large corporations in the ‘health-industrial complex’ for the sake of economic gain. Continued presentation of the ‘obesity epidemic’ as a global public health crisis, serves to reinforce societal myths and stereotypes, while shaping community beliefs, values and behaviour on behalf of corporate institutions.

▼ The aim of this study is to explore discourses that emerge in texts in pre-school quality reports from 2011-2015 and how pre-school practitioners talk about quality in pre-school. Because of the complexity of the concept of "quality" the study is limited to focus on and explore discourses about quality in preschool that emerge in texts where preschools make a comprehensive analysis and assessment of their educational activity and quality. Five texts from different pre-schools and three transcribed interviews/conversations with pre-schoolteachers (one of these teachers has previous experience of being a preschool director) and one preschool director/teacher are analyzed. Three of the texts originate from communal pre-school units in a larger city in Sweden and the other two are from smaller community pre-schools throughout the country. The texts and the statements in the interviews are analyzed from a social constructional perspective and with discourse analytical tools inspired by Norman Fairclough (2010). Two different dimensions are analysed; the texts and the discursive practice but mainly the focus is on the analysis of the texts. The result of the analysis of the texts and the statements from the interviews, shows two emerging discourses of quality; “measurability” and “meaning making”. These two perspectives about quality in pre-school stand side by side in the texts and dialogs which results in a “field of tension” between the discourses. The first discourse, measurability, can be related to a political agenda of management, financial interests and controllability where pre-school quality is connected to accomplishments and results. In this perspective, knowledge and learning connect to an idea that all children develop and learn in a predetermined and predictable manner and therefore becomes measurable. The second discourse, meaning making, has its roots in a social constructional perspective were learning and knowledge are socially constructed by language when people interact, and therefore knowledge and understanding are undergoing constant transformations by reflection and negotiation.

▼ This research is a
discourse analysis of a Christian ‗coloured‘ youth group, from the area of Mitchell‘s Plain, Cape Town.
In addition, the research indicates that the male interlocutors in most instances exert a strong influence on the discussions, which result in females showing tendencies to allow for the male
ideologies to dictate, thus perpetuating the dominant ideologies about male and female behaviour.

▼ This study examines change processes using a discursive approach in two case studies of change in the public sector of Pakistan. A discursive approach treats organizational change as a socially constructed phenomenon that is given meanings through the communicative interactions of organizational members and examines how these meanings legitimise or undermine the change. Researchers therefore examine how change is constructed and given meanings through the production, distribution and consumption of particular texts and talk of decision makers and organizational members. Hence, the broad objective of this research is to study the local government reform in Pakistan as a socially constructed change phenomenon. Therefore, this study has explored two research questions: How is organizational change constructed and given meanings through texts at the macro level? How is change interpreted and given meanings at the local level and what are the effects of differing interpretations?
The research site for this study was a major local government reform - the Devolution Plan - in the public sector of Pakistan introduced in 2001 aiming to improve the service delivery of local government. The data was comprised of texts, interviews and focus groups and was analysed by discourse analysis. The findings show that the change was given particular meanings in the Devolution Plan texts through the way in which particular roles were described; and particular concepts and subject positions were constructed. As a result, at the macro level, two particular accounts of the change namely a dystopian past and a utopian future were constructed to justify and legitimise the need for the change. In contrast, the analysis of the interviews and focus groups shows that at the micro level, two different accounts of the change were constructed in two case study organizations namely the optimistic and the sceptical accounts of the change.
Theoretically, this study makes the following three contributions: First, it has provided insights of the processes of social construction of meaning for a change program and suggests a four-step discursive construction process/model. These processes show that texts do not reflect what actually happened; rather they construct a version of change to legitimise a change program. Therefore, change texts should be seen not simply as guidelines for change, but as powerful means of justifying the change. Second, it shows that the macro level change can be interpreted and understood differently at local levels as organizational members interpret and understand the change in their local context and language, which may be different from the macro level context and language. These local level accounts of the change can have different effects on the organization. Finally, it brought the mainly separate macro and micro work on organizational change together by examining how macro-level discourses get translated into change programs within…
