▼ IT-enabled
innovation contest platforms are quickly growing in prominence due their provision of a cost effective, yet far reaching method of allowing organisations to connect with a global network of
innovation solvers. Borne of the open
innovation movement, this phenomenon and the research surrounding it have emerged suddenly and proliferated rapidly. Although conceptual support for the relevance of
social capital as an antecedent of
innovation seems compelling, there is a distinct lack of research to support this in existing literature. The result is that little is understood by scholars and practitioners in terms of its influence in the overall contest setting. This research study explores the heretofore unexplored influences of
social capital toward these contests. Empirical data was gathered through two rounds of data collection, a pilot study of Trend Micro along with case studies of 15 separate IT-enabled
innovation contest platforms. Through this analysis, three theoretical models emerged from the findings, which in turn formed: i. A preliminary theory of
social capital for
innovation contest platforms ii A preliminary theory of
social capital for competitive markets iii A preliminary theory of
social capital for collaborative communities The study contributes to IS theory and practice in several ways. Firstly, it provides the first investigation of
social capital theory within the
innovation contest domain. Through the research strategy implemented,
social capital theory is revealed to be a valid and appropriate theoretical lens that can be implemented by future researchers. Secondly, this investigation provides a solid foundation for further investigations, and the academic community is encouraged to validate and refine the theorisations presented herein. Thirdly, the findings serve to identify the strategic value of
social capital constructs, while also presenting the mechanisms used to facilitate their development. Fourthly, the findings of this study highlight the need for an understanding of appropriate management strategies towards
social capital within the
innovation contest platforms.

▼ In order to support
Social Innovation,
Social Designers advocate for the use of collaborative design methodologies, inclusive design processes, which produce innovative design outcomes and inclusive societies. While there is a large amount of literature on this topic from a European and US perspective, there is little understanding regarding the effect large
social disparity between stakeholders has on these types of engagements. The researcher describes this as cross-boundary collaborative design for
social innovation, where "boundary" refers to
social and collective identity such as, gender, race, class, etc., which is a reality in most South African collaborative design engagements and a gap in the literature. Thus, this thesis explores this gap by asking the research question, what practices, mindsets and interpersonal interactions help to support effective cross-boundary collaborative design for
Social Innovation? In order to answer this question, the researcher conducted 32 interviews followed by a single focus group with disparate stakeholders engaged in these types of initiatives. Using a Constructivist Grounded Theory approach and applying the lens of Appreciative Inquiry to her interview questions, she recorded narratives that focused on moments of effectiveness within these cross-boundary collaborative design engagements. What emerged from the data was a strong link between the quality of relationships between the disparate stakeholders and the effectiveness of the collaborative design process - what she described as "generative" relationships (connections built on trust, vulnerability, friendship and respect) that blurred the
social boundaries between the participants and helped them move across the
social divides with ease. This in turn increased the generative nature of the collaborative design process. Furthermore, these generative relationships were often established outside of the design process, in a preliminary phase (pre-project) before a design engagement began because this phase allowed the stakeholders to focus solely on building relationships, instead of generating design solutions. However, the importance of generative relationships does not feature strongly in the current collaborative design literature. Instead, it focuses mainly on developing communication methods as a way to support boundary crossing and views relationship building as a secondary by-product of a good communication method. This thesis, however, concludes that in order to support effective cross-boundary collaborative design engagements, this process should be flipped and attention be given to first building generative relationships that can then help to support the effectiveness of the cross-boundary communication methods and ultimately improve the over all crossboundary collaborative design process.

▼ Background: Existing literature has declared migrant integration as social stress putting communities under pressure. Dynamics of social innovations and digital technologies can provide solutions to the pressing matter of migrant integration, yet the academic literature is obscure about processes that organisations employ in this matter. Purpose: This study aims to investigate how the process of digital social innovation unfolds in organisations. The main purpose of this study seeks to answer the research question: How do organisations undertake the process of digital social innovations in relation to migrant integration? Method: To answer the research question, a qualitative research approach was chosen. Multiple case study was carried out, and the empirical data was gathered through semi-structured interviews. The content of the company websites and other additional material were used as a complementary source of information. The scope of participants was delimited to Sweden and Germany due to a high level of immigration in these countries. After data collection, the analysis was carried out in an abductive manner. Conclusion: The findings showed that the social innovation process is intertwined with the context where the actor acts as a mediator between the two. Two models were combined to gain both theoretical and practical insights without excluding one another. A suggested digital social innovation process model was then introduced in pursuit of providing a model that could be used in academia to annex scattered literature and to use the model in practice as a foundation for the innovation process.

Bridging the gap between Open and User Innovation? : exploring the value of Living Labs as a means to structure user contribution and manage distributed innovation.

▼ In nowadays society, organizations are struggling with the practical implementation of ‘distributed innovation’, or the fact that organizations need to reach outside their boundaries to tap into distributed sources of knowledge to enhance their
innovation processes. Within this PhD, we will look at a specific approach, promoted and supported by the European Commission, that tries to facilitate and manage distributed
innovation processes through a Public-Private-People partnership with a central role for the end-user: Living Labs. Following Almirall & Wareham (2011) and Leminen et al. (2014), we define Living Labs as an organized approach (as opposed to an ad hoc approach) to
innovation consisting of real-life experimentation and active user involvement by means of different methods involving multiple stakeholders, as is implied in the Public-Private-People character of Living Labs.
However, there are two main problems associated with these Living Labs. First problem, in terms of Living Lab practice and activity, is that there seem to be too many initiatives, without enough noticeable results or impact. This is linked to the second problem, dealing with Living Labs theory. To this date, there have been a lot of Living Lab publications, but there is no consistency in terms of connection to larger research paradigms and frameworks, and there is a lack of papers with a significant academic impact as well as research clearly illustrating their value.
Therefore, from a theoretical perspective, we have investigated both the Open and User
Innovation paradigms and demonstrated that Living Labs are an embodiment of both, although there are only few references to these literature streams in the current Living Labs literature. From a practice perspective, we have illustrated that Living Labs are rooted within various European predecessors such as cooperative design,
social experiments and ‘digital cities’, but that out of the 345 affiliated members to the European Network of Living Labs, at least 40% is currently inactive.
In order to further evolve Living Labs as a concept and to allow a better conceptualization, we developed a three layered model, consisting of a macro level (the Living Lab constellation), the meso level (consisting of a Living Lab
innovation project) and the micro level (consisting of the different methodological research steps). Moreover, within a multiple case study analysis of 4 Living Lab constellation, 21 Living Lab
innovation projects and 107 methodological research steps, we have been able to demonstrate that the concepts gathered from the Open
Innovation literature could be used to analyze the macro level, whereas the concepts from the User
Innovation literature could be used on the micro level. Through co-creation, both levels merge on the meso level, resulting in useful contributions to the
innovation in development. Therefore, we concluded that Living Labs are able to govern
innovation networks and to structure user participation in concrete
innovation projects.

▼ An increase in societal challenges is creating more pressure for the public service to meet the needs of its citizens and from the society in general. The greatest challenges that Piteå kommun face are the ageing population and the need of competence provision. This essay aims to examine how Piteå kommun utilizes social innovation. The empiric material has been collected through a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with key figures in Piteå kommun who are well versed in the use of social innovation. The theoretical framework, from which the analysis is based on, is based on Murray, Caulier-Grice och Mulgan’s (2010) theory of the social innovation process. The main results show that the informants share aconsistent view of what an innovation friendly climate should consist of, but how to get there is blurry and difficult to put in to words. The result also show that a politically governed organization faces a challenge when it comes to long-term efforts of social innovation since systematic change is dependent of a stable innovation process to get substantial effect. Among the informants, and in earlier research, social innovation is attributed a wide meaning which can either leads to boosted creativity and ideas or create uncertainty and a disinclination to make use of social innovation in different workplaces since the term seems unfamiliar. Suggestions for further research is examining and comparison of the utilization of social innovation in other municipalities. Another area that can be researched further is how the social innovation process is featured in the nonprofit sector and the private sector, which can lead to insights in how the sectors can collaborate between each other more easily.
▼ Social media helps farmers located in geographically isolated rural areas stay connected to the world.
Social media is an effective tool used in extension services and mass/distance education. Facebook is a successful
social network site for information gathering and sharing. In Taiwan, Facebook's penetration rate is higher than in any other Asian country. The purpose of this study was to determine the influences of selected factors on the adoption of Facebook by Taiwanese smallholder farmers. The study examined the relationships between characteristics of smallholder farmers,
innovation characteristics, stage in the
innovation-decision process, and potential barriers to the adoption of Facebook. A descriptive and correlational research design was used for this study. Three hundred and fifty one smallholder farmers participated in the survey.
Nearly half of the responding farmers were at the stage of “implementation.” Sixteen respondents were at stage of “confirmation.” Ninety-seven respondents were at the stage of “knowledge.” Thirty respondents were at the stage of “no knowledge.” Most respondents had Facebook accounts. The most common usages of Facebook were to connect with friends, receive agricultural information, read daily news and information, share daily life stories with others, and share professional knowledge with others. Nearly half of respondents with Facebook accounts used Facebook for farm marketing purposes.
Respondents held positive perceptions of relative advantage, compatibility, trialability, observability and low complexity as characteristics of Facebook. Respondents held neutral perceptions regarding technology concerns, financial concerns, concerns about time, planning issues, and concern about incentives for the adoption of Facebook.
The respondents were significantly different in perception of Facebook based on years of farming experience, gender, age, education, and income. Responding farmers also expressed significant differences between their perceptions of potential barriers by years of farming experience, farm size, gender, age, education level, and income status. Significant negative relationships existed between smallholder farmers’ perceptions of Facebook and potential barriers to Facebook. Trialability, planning issues, relative advantage, compatibility, observability, education, complexity, technology concerns, and age served as powerful predictors of respondents’ stages in the
innovation-decision process.

▼ Food waste is a global problem that has a significant impact on the environment and society. Nevertheless, the Dutch government lacks a clear strategy to reduce food waste. The city of Amsterdam also lacks such a strategy. Therefore, various social innovation initiatives are actively preventing food waste. These initiatives emerge from local collaboration and address a social problem in society that existing institutions have failed to tackle themselves. These initiatives call themselves “signaleringskeukens" or food waste prevention initiatives. As there is a lack of knowledge on the impact and governance of food waste prevention initiatives, this thesis aims to answer the following research question: What is the impact of food waste prevention initiatives in Amsterdam? In doing so, it will look at the governance of food waste prevention initiatives, their environmental and socio-economic impact, and drivers and barriers that influence this impact. This thesis shows that it is difficult for food waste prevention initiatives to realize an impact. They are confronted with barriers in almost every aspect of their activities. Despite collecting a significant amount of food waste, food waste prevention initiatives are still merely scratching the surface compared to Amsterdam's total amount of food waste. The initiatives are aware of this and primarily focus on raising awareness of food waste and food waste prevention. Thereby, the initiatives reach thousands of people but fail to reach politicians, councilors, and food businesses. Consequently, food waste prevention initiatives have not yet realized system innovation and transformative change. Nonetheless, they show great potential for changing the food system as long as they establish strong networks.

▼ Abstract
Spotify is currently the largest and fastest growing online music service. They started in 2006 and has since established itself in several European countries. Their financial revenue comes from advertising spots on the client and registered paid subscribers. Together with Spotify, we have come to a certain focus area where Spotify themselves feel that there is potential for improvement. This area of focus concerns the conversion from using Spotify's free "Open" to the payment options Unlimited and Premium.
Objective: We will use an innovation process to achieve an innovation grant that will create more attraction to the payment services. An added value in the client that will meet customer needs and that the user is ready to pay for. This will eventually increase the purchase flow to payment service on Spotify.
Method: The approach is based on a model of how to manage an innovation process (Bessant & Tidd, 2007). The first phase was to create the empirical work on the issue. Through a survey, we define user behavior, purchase tension and a general attitude to Spotify of the users who responded to the survey. The next phase was conducted idea generation and concept proposals at a value that was produced. The proposals were tested in a consumer test. The last phase was processed by two concept proposals for a final result that are presented for Spotify.
Results: A value added add-in payment service that goes under the working title of Verve. Verve is an innovative contributions based on a social interactive networking among users where they can recommend and recommend music between each other.
Key words: Innovation, Spotify, innovation process, information design, social interactivity

▼ This dissertation explores the use of social financing as a strategy to generate social innovation in Canada. Social financing is a strategy intended on positively changing social-ecological systems through investments that also seek to generate a financial return. The constantly evolving nature of complex social-ecological systems implies that the social investment strategies social financiers take should co-evolve with the systems they are seeking to impact and if this is the case then the role that measurement plays in social finance decision-making should be critical. This dissertation explores the role of the intermediaries that connect the suppliers of social financing, the organizations that use social financing and the social-ecological systems both sides are seeking to impact. A survey of current social financiers explores the tools they use in making their investment decisions to establish current Canadian practices and how they assess risk. Current practices in the measurement of social finance impact is compared to the evolution of impact assessments in the well-established fields of public health planning, environmental impact assessment and sustainability impact assessment to draw lessons relevant to the relatively new methods being used to assess the impact of social financing. Integrating the process of assessing social-ecological impact with the process of creating a portfolio of investments this dissertation proposes an approach called ‘developmental impact investing’ that sees a potential synergy between learning about a complex social-ecological system and managing investment risk. A case study of the Vancouver City Savings Credit Union is also developed as part of this dissertation to illustrate the challenges and opportunities inherent in operationalizing social financing at a large enough scale to have a substantial impact on a community. Ultimately the unique role that credit unions play in Canada’s social finance ecosystem presents a number of lessons for the sector’s financial sustainability, effective governance and its potential to trigger large-scale social innovation.

▼ Increasing societal problems in social welfare, governmental and state systems, and recent cuts in public spending, have raised interest in the role of social innovation as a means of providing potential solutions. Social innovation is defined as the innovative activities derived by organisations with a primary goal to address unmet social needs. The thesis examines how this distinct form of innovation can be fostered through a unique organisational form – the social enterprise. Adopting a dynamic capabilities perspective, the study investigates the role of external relationships in supporting social enterprises engaged in social innovation. The thesis commences with a review of the literature and finds that, in contrast to extensive research into technological innovation, few empirical studies of social innovation exist, highlighting a need for research into the process of social innovation, how it is undertaken by organisations. Drawing on the literature review, a conceptual model is presented that illustrates the social innovation process in two stages: “Seizing and Selection” and “Scaling and Implementation”, and depicts the external relationships engaged by social enterprises to harness the capabilities necessary for social innovation. Using data from a large-scale survey with respondents from 262 UK social enterprises combined with 31 semi-structured interviews in a mixed method design, the study supports the conceptual model and finds that the process of social innovation occurs in two distinct stages. Further, the research identifies a diverse range of external organisations that are key to accessing the capabilities necessary for social innovation, and maps these external relationships to each stage of the innovation process. The study goes on to identify the barriers social enterprises face during the pursuit of social innovation. The thesis concludes with policy and managerial recommendations on fostering social innovation in social enterprises.

Gaining insight into co-innovator behavior of external individual actor is the pivot in the co-innovation research and development. Therefore, in order to pave the way for future theorization and implementation, this study aims to understand and explain actor behavior and the related driving forces in an emerging yet important co-innovation model, so-called Social Product Development (SPD). This research consists of two case studies and a survey study. The first study was a review of 22 cases of co-innovation network, in particular their structures, components, and governance. The case of a successful SPD – Quirky.com – was reviewed next in details. After the exploratory phase, the research model, hypotheses, and instrument were developed in the light of the literature review, the theory of goal-directed behavior, and the data collected during the case studies. Then, the proposed model was tested by a survey.
The study proposed and validated that three interrelated constructs can model actor co-innovation behavior: ideation, collaboration, and communication. The study identified the main driving forces behind co-innovation in SPD networks, namely motivation, actor past experience, risks, and co-innovation platform. The survey highlighted the role of all three classes of motivations, namely extrinsic, intrinsic, and internalized extrinsic motivation in driving co-innovation. Extrinsic motivation largely drives ideation behavior; intrinsic motivation is mainly associated with communication behavior, and internalized extrinsic motivation primarily affects collaboration behavior. Risk is the significant hindering factor in co-innovation environment. Risk associated with 'time' is the most important factor compared with financial risk, intellectual property risk, and social risk. This study explained how the relationships between motivation factors and actors' intention to co-innovate could be influenced by the platform functional affordances. However, the effects are small, and they depend on actors' co-innovation goals.

▼ The focus of this thesis was to utilize the Action Research Engagement (ARE) process to engage stakeholders in a collaborative curriculum design process at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), to inform recommendations for community engagement strategies, and curriculum design relative to social innovation (SI). Six interviews were conducted, along with two stakeholder sessions utilizing human-centred design methods, and nine participants. Five findings pointed to the need for a SI strategy at CMU, with a significant focus on mending the gap between community stakeholders and the university. Three recommendations encourage CMU to develop a SI strategy focused on relationship building with community stakeholders to foster long-term partnerships and develop innovative solutions to promote a sustainable funding model. These recommendations contribute to laying the foundation for a viable SI program to produce graduates qualified for today’s workplace. The contribution of this research to the existing body of literature is a case study illustrative of the net benefits of a collaborative course design process involving stakeholders in SI education, as well as the challenges involved in this process.

▼ Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine how
social innovation has developed and diffused within a regional context during the first five years of a new initiative. This is a timeframe where elite relationships and networks may be critical to build support and buy in for the
innovation in the diffusion process. Using a case study of a single initiative that is focused on community enhancement through creativity, the research explores how the institution operates and navigates community systems through extended leadership networks. The research focused on stakeholder motivations and vested interest to engage and remain involved with a statewide
social innovation project, and the barriers and enablers to maintaining and growing the
innovation and network. The results indicate that leveraging and building a network of extended relationships is an active process, considered by stakeholders to be critical to personal and business development. The
social innovation organization seeks to build networks, particularly leadership networks, in the initial stages. At the same time leaders are seeking to expand their own networks and spheres of influence. Individuals join and remain vested in networks for various reasons, not all of which may align with the vision and mission of the
social innovation. The organization should be aware that networks are dynamic, interlinking and may be utilized for different purposes. Therefore, the networks need to be actively managed to ensure stakeholder expectations are assured.

In front of the potential of social innovation to propose new entrepreneurial solutions to current social problems, the incubation approach has been promoted as a privileged method to stimulate and support its emergence. This research proposes to deepen our knowledge on social incubators and to explore the links between incubation and social innovation, as well as their effects. The analysis focuses primarily on the practices put in place during the promotion and incubation of social innovations. Three empirical studies have been conducted and each of them focuses on a specific dimension of the incubator’s work. The first article shows how social incubators work to legitimize social innovation as a new response to social…

▼ This dissertation studies the sources and patterns of
innovation in the services sector. A typological theory of service innovations and their respective
innovation patterns is developed to address the lack of a theoretical basis in prior service
innovation classifications. It is propositioned that the differences in service
innovation patterns will manifest themselves along two characteristics of an innovative service concept: the sources of
innovation ideas and the standardization of service. A theory-based inductive, qualitative, building block approach will be adopted for the typological theory development. The technological trajectories theory, the resource-based view of the firm, and the systems of
innovation research tradition will be drawn on for specifying the expected
innovation patterns by types of service innovations. Two service
innovation types out of four in the typological theory are be subjected to empirical analysis by the method of focused, structured case comparison which also combines within-case analysis. Case studies of service concept innovations in four Estonian companies are conducted. The results of the empirical analysis indicate that differences in innovations patterns can be discerned between the two types of innovations with regard to their reliance on the external actors and resources of
innovation, whereas a "winning" pattern of in-house organization of the
innovation process appears to emerge that is common to both types of innovations. Policy recommendations that are formulated are carried by the idea that, for fostering
innovation in the services, the curricula and syllabi of higher education institutions must be better aligned with the needs for professional knowledge by the service firms, and they must provide insight into the frontiers of research in the pertinent fields of study. The contribution of this dissertation to the scholarship of services
innovation is seen in its fine specification of concepts and a well-delineated focus of case studies, which form a strong basis for finer measurement practices in potential continuation research projects.

▼ Innovation is an interactive learning process that
is facilitated naturally by geographic proximity. Innovation
intermediaries can serve as an extra catalyst to and facilitator of
interaction and collaboration. With today’s more globalized
knowledge and innovation landscape, companies and research
organizations seek complementary competencies and partners with
whom they can collaborate on a much broader geographical scale.
Although linkages with other actors internationally can offer
related knowledge to help secure continuous dynamism and long-term
competitiveness, engaging in internationally-collaborative
innovation processes requires conscious efforts and capabilities.
Innovation actors – particularly small companies – may lack the
internal capacity or network connections to pursue international
innovation activities. Such barriers may prevent or limit the
effectiveness of their engagement in international innovation
processes. Within the field of innovation policy, one of the
current issues is how policymakers can address actors’ barriers to
the internationalization of innovation – helping to catalyze
increased (and more efficient) international knowledge sourcing and
collaboration. If innovation processes are increasingly
transnational, how are public policies designed to facilitate
cross-border interaction? Could innovation intermediaries be
leveraged in this regard? Existing literature focuses on the role
that innovation intermediaries (cluster organizations or similar)
have in facilitating interactive learning and knowledge creation
within a particular local innovation node or national geography.
There is relatively less written about innovation intermediaries’
role in facilitating international interactive learning processes.
This thesis aims to improve understanding of how innovation
intermediaries foster firms’ and research organizations’
transnational innovation processes – facilitating learning and
serving as an input for future policy development in this area.
This thesis uses a case study approach to investigate factors
driving innovation actors’ need for intermediary support, and
support functions innovation intermediaries fulfill in relation to
these needs. 59 innovation actors (i.e. research organizations,
large/medium companies, and small companies) and 14 innovation
intermediaries – grouped in five transnational innovation networks
– were the objects of study in the StarDust project case. Data was
collected through interviews, surveys and participant observation
over the course of the three-year project. Results highlight three
key conclusions. First, transnational innovation processes drive a
relatively stronger demand for external support to bringing
dispersed knowledge sources together in collaborative development
of innovative solutions. Second, innovation actors’ differentiated
interests in external support imply a need for tailored support
functions, and highlight the possibilities for leveraging the
system in support delivery. Third, research results point to the
expanding role that…

▼ We live in an age where our most significant 'story' is becoming that of a growing population living on a resource scarce planet. The need for us to do things differently is clear, increasing our awareness of the importance for
social innovation around the world, yet the overriding narrative of our time remains embedded in a value system that maintains things just as they are. By looking at the stories we tell and the ways we tell them this study seeks to understand the role that 'narrative' plays in shaping our world, the power it has to influence an alternative reality, and its significance in creating conditions that are conducive for
social innovation to occur. This paper gains a deeper understanding of the value systems in which our storytelling behaviour seems to be fundamentally entrenched by exploring the differences between how we understand and make sense of stories of commercial, as opposed to
social, interest. In doing so, it has tried to gain insight into how we have successfully managed to sustain and fuel the growth of a global culture that rooted in an extrinsic value system, while we have failed to engender a sense of
social responsibility, justice and equality. By conducting a series of participatory action research workshops across four different case study contexts, the research sought to challenge three core elements identified in the literature as occurring in narrative patterns: (1) narratives appear to be framed within either a negative or a positive framework; therefore, reflecting only a 'partial story', and perpetuating stereotypes or incomplete truths; (2) they are generally told by a single, external storyteller, with a very clear agenda; and (3) they are constructed to appeal to extrinsic values. The study set out to understand how we might unlock fixed narratives in the pursuit of
social innovation - reconstructing new narratives that could in turn influence and perpetuate alternative realities. The workshop approach drew on influences from three practice-based methods: Theory U, human-centred design and elements of mindfulness practices. They were designed to prioritise story creation by multiple storytellers from inside the case study context, encourage the exploration of both negative and positive aspects of an experienced truth, and appeal to intrinsic values by creating the space for emergence and honesty. The workshops took place at a non-profit organisation, a private ii company, a public sector community health centre, and with an independent group of individuals from the same area. The core finding of this research was that by gaining a sense of 'agency' over their own capacity to identify, shape and share their own story, participants appeared able to identify and deconstruct 'fixed narratives' and move towards reconstructing a 'new, shared narrative' that was more inclusive of everyone's lived experience. A series of common factors appeared to play a consistently significant role in creating the conditions for this to take place. Some form of mindfulness, or body-based,…

Background: In line with increased digitalization, new market opportunities are emerging for financial players. Swedish banks are expected to lose a large part of their profits to new digital companies in the financial market. An important aspect of digital development is innovation. Digital companies are in the front edge when it comes to innovation and uses external information on social media as inspiration for new innovative solutions. Utilizing external information for the purpose of developing products and services is described as open innovation. Thus, it would be beneficial for banks to think based on customers' digital perspectives using information on social media as inspiration for new innovative solutions, in accordance with an open innovation strategy. Purpose: The aim of the study is to investigate how Swedish banks can use social media to stimulate open…

▼ This research will address American gender theorist Butler's assertion of third wave feminism and gender ethics and advocate that despite education and modernization, a duplicity still exists in the way gender has been depicted in western culture as well as in indigenous culture. This investigation seeks to acknowledge this duplicity by performing a comparative study of the western superhero Wonder Woman and the indigenous Indian Goddess Durga. Ultimately, this study challenges the contemporary terminologies and the interpretations concerning gender roles within the society to show the duplicity inherent in these contrasting renditions. Through a theoretical and practical framework and with the help of academic works and
social media, the study conveys more visually empathetic ways to define the feminine gender as being powerful and multifaceted. These investigations will include traditional and contemporary examples of visual illustrations that contain their own
social and cultural narratives and offer visual evidence of the perceptions and preconceptions that Butler refers to in her ‘Undoing Gender’ as “
social and sexual constraints” (Butler, 2004, p. 10-15). The findings include visual responses that explore the personal counter-reaction towards duplicity that I argue is rife within
social constructions of the feminine gender in both the Western and Eastern cultures. The illustration techniques in this research will provide more in-depth representations of the multifarious feminine characteristics. The study concludes that the sense of gender inequality still exists in contemporary society and only acceptance of this fact can resolve the issue.

▼ This thesis develops a conceptual framework for relating Social Capital theory to large IT outsourcing projects. It uses this to explore how social factors that arise in outsourcing situations can influence organisations’ competence in IT innovation. It finds that social capital principles provide a valuable alternative perspective to established practices in managing IT outsourcing. Social capital can be applied both in the analysis of IT outsourcing results and in planning outsourcing transitions that lead to improved longer term knowledge creation and innovation capability. Research was carried out in two large and established users of IT outsourcing, a UK government agency and a major bank. Based on this, two detailed case studies were prepared and an interpretive methodology used to understand how the respective outsourcing projects had developed. A conceptual model of the interacting organisational factors that lead to IT competence is derived from existing literature and tested against the case study data. This model sets out the new concept of an ‘outsourcing enclave’ as a unique structure in which knowledge resources of outsourcing client and vendor are combined, supported by social capital that is distinct from that in either feeding organisation. The thesis uses the model to observes how, in the cases studied, effective management of social capital in outsourcing enclaves has created situations conducive to knowledge creation and innovation and the barriers to this that were encountered. This reveals that social capital management in these organisations called for time after outsourcing transition during which social capital can stabilise in the enclave, for learning from the achievement of short term objectives and for application of relational governance alongside the outsourcing contract. The main contributions of the thesis are the conceptual framework of the outsourcing enclave and the use of this to apply social capital theory to specific situations of IT outsourcing. It also demonstrates how theorised dimensions of social capital can be used to interpret outcomes in real outsourcing situations. The cases provide further empirical support for social capital theory and their interpretation a basis for further research in the specific area of outsourcing and IT outsourcing in particular.

▼ This paper explores the patterns of innovation among firms by using unique survey data on more than 2000 Swedish firms. The purpose of the study is to examine if broadband availability has an impact on firm-level innovation and explore differences between firms in urban and rural municipalities. A probability likelihood method is used estimating the probability of a firm being innovative or not. Using two types of explanatory variables, firm characteristics and location characteristics, the analysis show that firm characteristics are the main determinants of firm innovation. A firm that wants to increase their chances to be innovative should choose an urban location. The availability of broadband increases the probability of innovation. Firms with a good broadband connection can reach other types of knowledge and information. Organisations should therefore strive to have a good broadband connection with a high-speed internet to access external knowledge and increase the innovative activity.

▼ In recent decades social scientists have started to use qualitative creative methods1 more and more, because of epistemological and methodological developments on the one hand and demands of innovation by governmental funding agencies on the other. In my thesis I look at the research practices of social scientists who use these qualitative creative methods and answer the following main research question: How are practices and approaches from the arts (specifically visual lens-based arts, poetry, performance and narrative) negotiated in social scientific research practice? This question has been divided into the following three sub-questions: 1) How do social scientists negotiate the use of creative methods with other members of their research community? 2) How do social scientists negotiate the use of creative methods into their own research practices? 3) And how do creative methods emerge in the process? Using Lave and Wenger's approach to communities of practice (1991; Wenger, 1998) and Ingold and Hallam's (2007) conceptualisation of improvisation for my theoretical framework, I look at these practices as constantly emerging and changing, but at the same time determined by those same practices. Based on ongoing conversations with postgraduate research students, interviews with experienced researchers, participant observation at conferences and videos of my participants' presentations, I conclude that the use of creative methods is always embedded within existing research practices. When this is not the case, either participants themselves or other academics experience the creative methods as problematic or even as non-academic. In those cases boundarywork (the in- and exclusion of what is deemed academic) is performed more fiercely, making it difficult, if not impossible for creative methods to be truly innovative in the sense that it means a break with previous practices. Instead, we see small shifts in participants' academic practices and how creative methods are taken up in these practices. This means improvisation is a more apt term to describe how creative methods are making their way into social scientific research practices/into the social sciences. As such this conclusion has consequences for the way we think about learning methods, the production of knowledge, innovative methods and (inter)disciplinarity.

▼ In Europe there are many countries that are experiencing issues with an aging population. In fact, many countries are changing their welfare and healthcare systems in order to facilitate the change. Consequently, elderly people are required to remain in their own homes for as long as possible and organize their own healthcare. Doing so can be a complex process and assistance in the form of a digital platform can offer the solution for elderly to age in their own households. This type of social innovation and other social functions enabled by a platform can enable elderly to age in place. This research proposes to set up an experiment in order to measure the effect a digital platform has on the capabilities of elderly to live at home. The results show that a digital platform will in fact increase capabilities of elderly. Such a digital platform has not only a positive effect on elderly, but also on their voluntary caretakers. Thereby, the platform enables social innovation by lowering thresholds for users to participate in healthcare tasks. Based on the results, recommendations are made that can be used to further the development of platforms for health and well-being and increase their effectiveness and potentially facilitate widespread societal change

▼ Social innovations are solutions related to humanistic needs and the betterment of mankind with the intent of creating
social value and eventual societal level changes.
Social innovation therefore broadens traditional views of
innovation to include processes of societal transformations and human behaviors. These
social innovations are becoming more commonplace across all sectors, including capital markets. Private equity and venture capital firms in the capital markets sector engage in
social innovation by investing capital with the goal of delivering both economic and
social value. Despite the critical importance of venture capital (VC) in the success of
social innovations through socially responsible investing, there is a paucity of research in understanding the factors that affect the performance of these
social VC firms. This research gap is addressed by asking the following primary research question: What is the role of strategic and structural factors in the performance of socially innovative venture capital firms? The firm level research is theoretically based on the well-established design school. This framework highlights the overarching importance of strategy and structure in the accomplishment of firm goals. In the context of the venture capital industry, it was hypothesized that certain unique strategic and structural factors (i.e., stage of investment, age, size, and network relationships) would influence the performance of socially innovative VC firms. A moderated mediation model was proposed to examine these factors and their influence on performance variation. The sample of socially innovative VC firms was generated from the ThomsonOne Private Equity Database. The research design and methodology followed a systematic and objective process. This included identification of the sample of 381 VC firms, collection of mission statements for each VC firm, development of key word list pertaining to
social innovation for content analysis and the collection of archival data on each VC firm. Content analysis was then used to identify the degree to which the firm’s strategic orientation (mission statement) was related to
social innovation. Finally, both traditional and more cutting edge statistical analyses (Preacher & Hayes, 2008) were used to evaluate the moderated mediation model. The results of this study provide several key take-a-ways for both researchers and practitioners focusing on
social venture capital. Firstly, results indicated that firms adopt distinct foci of
social investing that directs their strategic orientation. These various foci have vastly differing effects on the firm’s overall performance, the strategic decisions they make, and the architecture of their structural design. It is therefore necessary to treat each focus area separately given differences in strategies, industry and investment focus, and market orientations. Secondly, including socially related language in the firm’s mission statement does not guarantee that a VC firm will actually implement a
social orientation or seek to…
