▼ Single-parent households are on the increase in our society and especially single-father households where fathers are fulfilling the role of both parents in rearing their children. In this qualitative study, three single fathers who are primary caregivers were interviewed regarding their experience of primary caregiving, adjusting and coping with the transition to primary caregiving and their needs and concerns for their children's future. This study utilised a phenomenological approach to look at single fathers as the best and most informed individuals to explore and describe their lived experiences of being primary caregivers. The rationale for using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) is that it is concerned with individuals' subjective reports and assumes that participants seek to interpret their experiences into some form that is understandable to them. The researcher utilised three semi-structured, in depth, face-to-face interviews as a method of data collection. Each interview focused on eliciting different sets of data, firstly the researcher look at identifying the participants' experience of primary care giving, then moved onto their adjusting and coping with the transition and finally focused on the primary needs and concerns of participants with regards to primary care giving. The sub-themes that emerged from the study include the loss of a partner, shifts in the role the fathers play as parent, dealing with children's reaction to the "loss" of a mother in the home, good parenting: biology vs upbringing, social construction of men and woman, the value of self-care for single fathers, where self-care incorporates both physical and mental care, internal support from family or friends, external support from the community, relationship between fathers and children and sibling relationships. These led to the various super-ordinate themes. The super-ordinate themes and categories that resulted from the analysis of the material include: (1) The transition to being a single-parent and primary caregiver was difficult, (2) Parenting is not biological it is cultural and fathers can fulfil the role, (3) Self-care is important, (4) Support comes from family and friends but social support is rare, (5) Close family relationships are formed

▼ Single parenting is becoming much more common today for a variety of reasons. The single parent family is a result of divorce, desertion or separation, death or having a child illegitimately, Some women make this choice for palitico-feminist reasons, wanting parenthood but being unwilling to cohabit with a man. It may well reflect a deep seated need to prove her independence. The present study has been motivated by the fact that becoming a single parent is usually a traumatic process with much heated and confused emotion in relationships over and above the basic problem of just one adult figure having to cope with small children. The aim of the study was to elicit from a group of single mothers their needs, to prioritize these needs, then form an on-going self—help group programme. It was hypothesized that a self-help group programme for single mothers would improve parental attitudes, parenting skills and interpersonal functioning. Parental attitudes, parenting skills and interpersonal functioning were assessed over three assessment periods, i.e. pretest, post test and fallow up. The following psychological measures were used: Maternal chi1d—rearing attitude scale, Parenting skills qualitative and quantitative ratings and Carkhuff scales far levels of interpersonal functioning. The project consisted of meetings with the group of single mothers at weekly intervals over two months. The group meetings were videotaped for evaluation by independent judges, for levels of interpersonal functioning. A short written qualitative evaluation of the programme was required of the mothers. After the programme was instituted there was no significant change in parental attitudes and parenting skills* One can assume that this group of single mothers had an extensive knowledge of child-rearing practices and parenting skills. This might be so because the group was composed of educated and professiona1 mothers. At the same time one cannot cone 1ude that educated and professional mothers have good parental attitudes and parenting skills because there is no available literature or research findings to support that cone 1usion. Interpersonal functioning improved remarkedly in terms of empathy, respect, genuineness and se1f—disc1osure. The single mothers evaluated the programme as goad and helpful to their children. They all wished that the programme could continue. One of the limitations of the study was the fact that the sample was small. But the number met the requirements for a group. Another limitation was that the group only comprised of one category of single mothers, i.e. educated and professional mothers. Perhaps if the group has a mix of categories, i.e. lay mothers and teenage mothers, resu1ts yielded would show a significant change in child—rearing attitudes and parenting skills. O tema dos direitos reprodutivos, tal como grande parte das demandas da atualidade, reveste-se de complexidade, seja por sua ligação com a biociência e tecnologia com sua dinâmica peculiar e seus ambíguos efeitos , seja por ter sua origem ligada às demandas feministas o que lhe predispõe a interpretações parciais e ou partidárias. A presente dissertação propõe-se, assim, a enfrentar o tema dos direitos reprodutivos levando em conta a complexidade que lhe é inerente, e que se manifesta de maneira explícita no exemplo adotado, do projeto monoparental feminino no qual a mulher solteira, utilizando-se de técnica de inseminação artificial com sêmen de doador, pretende formar uma família monoparental, composta apenas por mãe e filho, sem o estabelecimento de vínculo afetivo ou sexual com um homem. Na busca das repercussões éticas e jurídicas que emanariam do projeto monoparental feminino, a pesquisa parte de duas análises centrais: uma bioética, no primeiro capítulo, com o estudo dos modelos principialista e personalista, onde se chega à idéia de dignidade de pessoa humana; outra de direitos humanos, no segundo capítulo, onde se delineia sua trajetória e se evidencia a possibilidade de que estes venham a conduzir as reflexões éticas (realizadas na bioética) à concretização jurídica (no biodireito). Passando aos direitos reprodutivos, no terceiro capítulo trata-se da contribuição do movimento feminista para a afirmação dos direitos reprodutivos, e sua inclusão no catálogo de direitos humanos. E, por fim, com atenção no exemplo do projeto monoparental feminino, são reveladas as possíveis repercussões éticas e jurídicas que tomariam lugar frente aos direitos reprodutivos entendidos como direito de procriar

The subject concerning reproductive rights, as most of the demands nowadays, is very complex, not only because of its links with biosciences and biotechnology with its particular dynamics and ambiguous effects , but also because of its origins in feminism which makes it very likely to partial and/or partidary interpretations. Therefore, the present dissertation intends to face the issue of reproductive rights taking into consideration its inherent complexity, which is very clear in the chosen example of the single woman project of parenthood in which a single woman, addopting the use of artificial insemination with a donors semen, has the intention to form a family composed only by a mother and a child, without establishing affective or sexual bonds with a man. Searching the ethical and juridical consequences that would arise from the single woman project of parenthood, this research starts from two main analysis: a bioethical one, in the first chapter, with emphasis in the principalist and personalist models, where we get to the idea of human dignity; and another one regarding the human rights, in the second chapter, where we describe its trajectory and where its studied the possibility that these bioethical reflexions can lead to a juridical concretization.Moving to the third chapter, regarding reproductive rights, we…

A educação dos filhos em regime de monoparentalidade feminina tem sido um fenómeno de relevo nos últimos anos, justificando uma intervenção especializada. Ora, partindo deste pressuposto, verificamos que a intervenção do educador social é fundamental para orientação, transmissão de informação e acompanhamento das famílias monoparentais femininas, permitindo-lhes adquirir competências sociais para lidarem com as mais variadas situações com que se deparam. Neste âmbito, apresentamos um estudo empírico de natureza qualitativa, através do recurso à entrevista aberta ou não estruturada, através da qual reconstruímos as histórias de vida de quatro participantes (n=4), oriundas de bairros sociais da cidade do Porto, correspondendo a agregados monoparentais femininos com características comuns de precariedade económica e social. Os resultados obtidos mostram que são imputáveis às famílias monoparentais femininas um conjunto de efeitos na educação das crianças, os quais resultam mais das condições socioeconómicas do que do género do progenitor. Além disso, o estudo confirmou a importância da aquisição e reforço das competências sociais para os agregados familiares superarem as dificuldades com que se deparam e realizarem um integração plena e eficaz, destacando-se, por isso, a importância da intervenção do Educador Social.

The education of children in a regime of female single parenthood has been a prominent phenomenon in recent years, justifying a specialized intervention. Well, based on this assumption, we found that the intervention of the social educator is essential to guidance, transmitting information and following up the female single parenthood families, enabling them to acquire social skills to deal with various situations they face. In this context, we present an empirical study of a qualitative nature, through by the resorting to an open and unstructured interview, through which we reconstruct the life stories of four participants (n=4), native of social neighbourhoods from the city of Porto, corresponding to female single parenthood aggregates, with common features of economic and social precariousness. The results obtained show that are attributed to the female single parenthood families, a set of effects on children´s education, which result the most of the socioeconomic conditions, than of the gender of the parent. Furthermore, the study confirmed the importance of the acquisition and reinforcement of the social skills for the households overcome difficulties they face and accomplish a full and effective integration, highlighting therefore, the importance of the intervention of the Social Educator.

▼ ADOPTIO HYVÄN ARJEN ÄITIYTTÄ Terveystieteiden maisteri Seija Sukula väittelee Tampereen yliopiston lääketieteellisessä tiedekunnassa kansainvälisistä adoptioista. Tutkimus on nimeltään Matka äidiksi tarinoita adoptiosta ja yksinvanhemmuudesta . Siinä hän analysoi adoptioprosessin eri vaiheita 19 yksinhakijan tarinan avulla. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat kertojien kokemukset äitiydestä, adoptioprosessista ja yksinvanhemmuuden arjesta. Tutkimuksessa on myös tarkasteltu näiden tarinoiden suhdetta yleisesti kerrottuihin äitiyttä ja yksinvanhemmuutta normittaviin tarinoihin. Tutkimus kuuluu sosiaali- ja terveyspolitiikan alaan. Vuosina 1985-2007 Suomeen on saapunut kansainvälisen adoption kautta n. 3500 lasta. Yksinhakijoiden määrä on ollut noin kymmenen prosenttia kaikista hakijoista. Lähes kaikki yksinhakijat ovat olleet naisia. Kaikkiaan kansainvälisiä adoptioita tapahtuu maailmassa vuosittain noin 45 000, ja eniten lapsia adoptoidaan Kiinasta ja Venäjältä. Adoptioiden määrä oli tasaisessa kasvussa 2000-luvun alussa, mutta määrät ovat laskeneet takaisin 10 vuoden takaiselle tasolle adoptioon luovuttavien maiden (lähinnä Kiina) kiristettyä adoptoiville perheille asetettuja kriteereitä. Adoptioon ja yksinvanhemmuuteen liitetään riskejä Saadakseen adoptiolapsen hakijan on osallistuttava adoptioneuvontaan, joka on osa lastensuojelun käytänteitä. Ero perinteiseen lastensuojeluun on siinä, että adoption hakijat astuvat vapaaehtoisesti lastensuojelun asiakkaiksi. Neuvonnan tarkoituksena on selvittää tulevien vanhempien motiiveja ja mahdollisuuksia kasvattaa lapsi. Tutkimukseen osallistuneet olivat useamman kerran joutuneet osoittamaan olevansa valtavirran mallitarinoiden mukaisia hyviä äitejä sekä adoptiota edeltävässä että sen jälkeen tapahtuvassa sosiaalityössä. Adoptioneuvontaa ohjaavassa oppaassa adoptioperhe määrittyy erilaisten sitä uhkaavien riskien kautta. Oletetun riskin katsotaan juontavan juurensa adoptoidun lapsen menneisyydestä. Useissa tutkimuksissa korostetaan myös yksinvanhemmuuden riskejä, jotka kyseenalaistavat yksinäisen äidin mahdollisuuksia tarjota lapselleen tasapainoinen kasvuympäristö. Biologisen äitiyden mallitarina dominoi Tutkimukseen osallistuneet naiset puhuivat biologisen äitiyden mallitarinan mukaisesti raskaudesta eli lapsen odotuksesta, syntymästä kun lapsi saatiin tai keskenmenoista silloin kun luvattua lasta ei saanutkaan. Yhtenäinen kieli syntyy osana adoptioneuvonnan tarjoamia kielikuvia. Adoptiolapsen ns. syntymälle ei ole olemassa valmista kulttuurista mallitarinaa. Ensimmäinen merkittävä kohtaaminen lapsen kanssa oli valokuvan saaminen lapsesta. Perinteisesti biologisen lapsen syntymä tapahtuu sille legitimoidussa suojaisessa paikassa, jossa ympärillä on synnytyksen hoitoon erikoistunut henkilökunta. Adoptiossa lapsen luovutus tapahtui julkisessa tilassa kuten hotellien aulassa, lastenkodissa tai sijaiskodissa. ▼ This study explored factors that contribute to successful life outcomes in the lives of adults who grew up in single female headed households. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the perception of single parenting in itself as a deficit model without acknowledging the lack of both the economic and the social capital that accompany single motherhood. A mixed-method design was used with content analysis as the primary tool for analyzing the data collected from biographies of adults who were raised by single mothers. Findings indicate that mother???s demonstrative affection and consideration of the exceptionalism of their children were factors responsible for success as reported by adults who were raised in single parent families. The majority of the respondents reported having positively strong relationships with their mothers and that financial hardship coupled with lack of support emerged as the dominant factors that presented difficulties in their childhood while growing in single female headed households. Despite the difficult factors, the majority of the respondents reported having optimism and not having a sense of hopelessness while growing up and as adults, due to the strength of the relational bond with their mothers. Additionally, nearly half of them reported the value of the positive role models set by their mothers in establishing the values of hard work and aspirations for success. Respondents who reported their mothers as having a religious affiliation or spiritual background were more likely to demonstrate a more optimistic outlook than those who grew up in households where mothers who did not identify having any faith-based beliefs. Social work implications and recommendations include the need for economic and social support to single female-headed families within the parameters of a strengths-based model that strengthens the environment for stable family structures devoid of the interference in children???s physical, social and mental health that may be imposed by the insistence on a two parent structure, where one or both the parents do not possess the readiness for parenthood. Πρωταρχικό στόχο αποτελεί η ανάδειξη των απόψεων και ιδεών, των προσωπικών βιωμάτων και πεποιθήσεων των ίδιων των υποκειμένων έρευνας. Για το λόγο αυτό, ως μεθοδολογική στρατηγική επιλέγεται η εφαρμογή των αρχών της εμπειρικά θεμελιωμένης θεωρίας, μαζί με τις αρχές της κριτικής και φεμινιστικής θεωρίας (critical feminist grounded theory). Πρόκειται για μια επαγωγική ερμηνευτική ερευνητική διαδικασία, η οποία χαρακτηρίζεται από την ταυτόχρονη συλλογή, ανάλυση και παραγωγή ποιοτικών ερευνητικών δεδομένων, τα οποία και προκύπτουν μέσα από είκοσι πέντε ημιδομημένες συνεντεύξεις, η διάρκεια των οποίων κατά μέσο όρο εντοπίζεται πλέον των τριών ωρών. Πρόκειται, επίσης και για την παρουσίαση των αποτελεσμάτων της μέσα από την οικοδόμηση μιας «μεσαίου-χώρου θεωρίας» (middle-range theory), η οποία προσδοκεί στην αποτελεσματική ερμηνεία των εμπειριών των μόνων γονέων αναφορικά με την επίδραση της μονογονεϊκότητας στην εκπαιδευτική επιτυχία των παιδιών τους. Η συγκεκριμένη πολυμεθοδολογική προσέγγιση επιχειρεί να διαφωτίσει τη διαδικασία της συνειδητοποίησης των άνισων σχέσεων εξουσίας, τη σκιαγράφηση πλήθους σχέσεων, οι οποίες προσλαμβάνονται ως προσωπικές αλλά και ως κοινωνικές κατασκευές, δημιουργώντας κατά τον τρόπο αυτό τις προϋποθέσεις, τόσο για τον εντοπισμό των ποικίλων στερεοτύπων που λανθάνουν μέσα στην κοινωνική δομή, όσο και για την ενεργοποίηση των κοινωνικών δυνάμεων με στόχο τη δράση, ώστε να επέλθει η κοινωνική αλλαγή. Την ανάλυση διευκολύνει η χρήση του λογισμικού προγράμματος ποιοτικών κοινωνικών ερευνών Atlas.ti. Η έρευνα πραγματοποιήθηκε από το Νοέμβριο του 2002 μέχρι τον Ιούνιο του 2006. Συγκεκριμένα, είκοσι πέντε μόνοι γονείς, μητέρες και πατέρες, που έχουν την αποκλειστική ευθύνη των οικογενειών τους και βιώνουν όλες τις μορφές της μονογονεϊκότητας –εκτός γάμου, χηρεία, διάσταση, διαζύγιο- αποτελούν τα υποκείμενα της έρευνας. Κατοικούν όλες και όλοι στο πολεοδομικό συγκρότημα της Θεσσαλονίκης, ανήκουν στην κυρίαρχη πολιτισμική-εθνική-θρησκευτική-γλωσσική πληθυσμιακή ομάδα, το κοινωνικοοικονομικό και εκπαιδευτικό τους επίπεδο ποικίλλει, ενώ το ηλικιακό τους εύρος εντοπίζεται μεταξύ των 25-65 ετών. Η επίδραση της μονογονεϊκότητας στην εκπαιδευτική επιτυχία των παιδιών, έτσι όπως γίνεται αντιληπτή από τους ίδιους τους μόνους γονείς, οριοθετείται μέσα από τη διερεύνηση: (α) της εισόδου στη μονογονεϊκότητα, (β) της ανάπτυξης σε μορφωσιογόνο περιβάλλον κατά τη διαβίωση των παιδιών σε μονογονεϊκές οικογένειες και (γ) της επιδίωξης της ποιότητας στις διαπροσωπικές σχέσεις ως ασφαλιστικής δικλείδας στον κίνδυνο για σχολική αποτυχία.
