The development of suitable techniques to dispose residues has become greater since its production has increased due to the population growth and the industrial and technological progress. Particularly, the generation of residues by the siderurgic industry has been largely studied on account of the qualitative and quantitative relevance of such activity. Specifically in the process of pig-iron production, the gas from the blast furnace carries with it fine particulate material that, during its passage through the gas cleaning system, bring about the production of a residue called pó de balão, if generated by the dry cleaning system, or lama, if generated by the cleaning system based on water. These residues were placed on soil in areas of commercial crop of eucalyptus and the effects of such on the characteristics of soil and water were evaluated. The research was carried out from November 2004 to January 2006 in two different experimental areas which were simultaneously settled (one located in Curvelo City Minas Gerais State, Brazil, km 401 on the highway BR 040, and the other one in Três Marias County Minas Gerais State, Brazil, 15 km away from Andrequicé Town Minas Gerais State, Brazil). Both areas have the similar physical, chemical, morphological and weather aspects, varying only the soil texture (clayey and sandy, respectively). Thirteen samplings were used to evaluate the soil and both superficial and underground water, under the influence of the applied residues. The first sampling was used for characterization and the other twelve were monthly taken after the residues were placed. Superficial water was evaluated by using downstream and upstream samplings at the place where the residues were applied from courses of water near the treated areas (Córrego das Pedras in Curvelo MG and Córrego das Éguas in Três Marias MG); underground water was evaluated by using samplings in piezometer set at a inferior height and the other at a superior height near the treated area, taking as the reference point the superficial outflow lines of the ground; the DQO parameters, zinc, pH, trivalent chromium, hexavalent chromium, total chromium, total phenols, cyanides, lead and iron were also analyzed. The soil evaluation in each experimental area was done by using 16 plots of 1,000m2 each, trying by this way to minimize the effect of natural heterogeneity of the soil on the results on the random delimitation with paired plots. The soils samplings were done by using augers, in random places, in the center of each plot, being collected three simple samples in each plot at deepness varying from 0 to 30cm and from 30 to 60cm in order to determine the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, iron, lead, manganese, copper, cadmium, nickel, mercury and total phenols available in the soil.
