With the use of a close-reading and a comparative methodology, my PhD is based on empirical observation as well as on primary and secondary bibliography. The aim of this research is to indicate both the national and universal traits of Greek surrealism. For this purpose, the theoretical part of the analysis is consisted of a comparative chronicle of Greek and French surrealism, a definition of what is considered as Greek and an introduction in the characteristics of surrealism in Greece and in Europe. The hypothesis of the double nature of this phenomenon in Greece is examined through the following poetic examples; Nikos Gatsos, Amorgos, Nikos Engonopoulos, Bolivar, a Greek poem and Odysseus Elytis, To Axion Esti. The above poets and works have been chosen because their orientation is both surrealistic and traditional. In conclusion, following a short summary and analysis of Greek and French surrealism similarities and differences, further debatable issues are also being discussed. On the whole, the theoretical and empirical data verify the originality of the Greek phenomenon together with its innovative perspective of tradition. Furthermore, Greek surrealism is demonstrated to be revolutionary in its anticlassicism and to prove the evolving nature of the surrealistic movement.

Εφαρμόζοντας μια ενδοκειμενική και συγκριτική μεθοδολογία, και αξιοποιώντας εμπειρικά και βιβλιογραφικά δεδομένα από πρωτογενείς και δευτερογενείς πηγές, η διατριβή μου στοχεύει στην ανάδειξη των ιθαγενών και ευρωπαϊκών χαρακτηριστικών του ελληνικού υπερρεαλισμού. Γι’ αυτόν τον σκοπό, το θεωρητικό μέρος της ανάλυσης περιλαμβάνει την ιστορικοσυγκριτική επισκόπηση του ελληνικού υπερρεαλισμού, τον ορισμό της ελληνικότητας και την εισαγωγή στα χαρακτηριστικά του ελληνικού κι ευρωπαϊκού υπερρεαλιστικού ρεύματος. Η υπόθεση της διπλής φύσης του εγχώριου φαινομένου εξετάζεται παραδειγματικά μέσω της ανάλυσης των ακόλουθων έργων: Νίκου Γκάτσου, Αμοργός, Νίκου Εγγονόπουλου, Μπολιβάρ, ένα ελληνικό ποίημα και Οδυσσέα Ελύτη, Άξιον Εστί. Η επιλογή των συγκεκριμένων δημιουργών και έργων γίνεται με κριτήριο τον υπερρεαλιστικό και συνάμα παραδοσιακό προσανατολισμό τους. Στα συμπεράσματα, πραγματοποιείται μια σύντομη ανακεφαλαίωση και ανάλυση των συγκλίσεων κι αποκλίσεων ανάμεσα στον ελληνικό και στον γαλλικό υπερρεαλισμό, ενώ επίσης σχολιάζονται ορισμένοι προβληματισμοί που προέκυψαν κατά την ερευνητική πορεία. Εν συνόλω, από τα θεωρητικά και τα εμπειρικά δεδομένα, στοιχειοθετείται η αυθεντικότητα του ελληνικού ρεύματος, η ανανεωμένη σχέση του με την παράδοση, η διπλή επαναστατικότητά του στην προώθηση του αντικλασικισμού και η εξελικτική διάσταση του υπερρεαλιστικού φαινομένου

A presente dissertação parte do princípio da relevância da produção arquitetônica para uso residencial no contexto das mudanças sociais ocorridas entre as primeiras décadas do século XX e o período do segundo pós-guerra, bem como da observação de que inúmeras obras residenciais paradigmáticas deste período foram projetadas e executadas por arquitetos para uso próprio. Buscou-se, através do recorte do objeto, estudar a arquitetura que resultou de situações que, embora possam ser consideradas excepcionais na atividade produtiva do arquiteto - e talvez até pelo mesmo motivo - puderam propiciar aos autores estudados a oportunidade de elaborar questões pertinentes à disciplina com mais liberdade, do ponto de vista de condicionantes mercadológicas e sócio-culturais vigentes, do que em situações convencionais de produção. Procuramos também, através da comparação entre as residências próprias de arquitetos e o conjunto de sua produção, compreender em que medida as condicionantes do projeto representadas pela figura do cliente podem interferir no resultado final da obra. O objetivo geral do trabalho consiste no levantamento e classificação de obras residenciais de arquitetos (projetadas e construídas para uso próprio) consideradas relevantes na historiografia da arquitetura mundial e brasileira do período estudado, bem como na análise de sua representatividade no conjunto da obra de seus autores, sua relação com as principais correntes arquitetônicas identificadas para a época e suas contribuições ao pensamento e à cultura arquitetônica do período. Apresentamos também a análise aprofundada de alguns casos individuais, com o objetivo de revelar elementos do programa, processo projetual, linguagem, e valores dos arquitetos estudados - além de sua representatividade em relação ao contexto histórico da disciplina.

This dissertation begins with the relevance of residential architecture within the context of the social transformations of the first decades of the 20th century and the period following World War II. It is noted that many of the milestone residences of that time were designed and built by architects for their own use. This work aims to study the architecture resulting from arguably exceptional situations of architectural production, which provided its architects with the opportunity to elaborate issues pertinent to the discipline with greater freedom - in terms of the market and socio-cultural conditions in force at the time - than would have been possible if these situations had been conventional. We have also sought to understand the measure to which the design constraints imposed by clients can impact on the final result, by comparing the architectsówn homes to their output as a whole. ▼ The main purpose of this research is to seek the influences of the Greek literary tradition on the poetic work of Nikos Engonopoulos. In the start of our research there was the belief that Engonopoulos work multi-dimensionally explicable, approached not only by the methods of traditional analysis but the methods of contemporary poetical theory. Another point that motivated our research was also the understanding that the background of his poetic passages is rich in intertextuality. This functioned also as guidelines to the constitution of the meaning. Finally, in the aims of our research, not only is the pointing out of theGreek influences included but also their explanatory dimension. In other words theway in which these influences are placed and organize the meaning of each passage. Our research consists of the Introduction, the Main Part and the Conclusion. In the first part of the Introduction the methodology and the purposes of the research are presented analytically. The selection of poems and their thematic categorisation was done taking as a criterion the three basic analytical categories which dominate the work of the poet. These are: Mythology, Self-Reference and Historicity. We approached our material based mostly on the methodological principle of intertextuality. Helpful were also the theoretical suggestions of Michael Riffaterre, Gérard Genette and Laurent Jenny. The second part of the Introduction includes the analytical presentation of an up- dated bibliography on the work of Nikos Engonopoulos along with the publications (articles, studies) the last years is extremely rich and covers enough and also important aspects of his work. Our critical approach includes comparative studies done on "Bolivar" but also on theremaining work of the poet through the perspective of investigation of influencesmostly from the Greek literary tradition. The Introduction is fulfilled by the indication and recording of the begining of Engonopoulos' poetic inspiration. At this point very helpful were some facts which had nothing to do with the passages. There were the poet's "Notes", which accompany mostly his first poetic collections but also his beliefs about the Greek tradition as they have been written in interviews he has given to magazines and newspapers. These beliefs of his, create a framework of interpretation of a very important part of his poetic production guiding and useful for our researchable attempt. The first chapter of this research is occupied with "Mythology", which consists of one of the basic analytical categories in his poetic work. A basic prerequisite of this interpretation is the acceptance of the myth as an intertextual which consists an element and material for writing of his poetic passage. The mythological elements are found either in an original form or transformed in an important part of his poets and their value in time originates as the message of the myth appears in modern times. ▼ This thesis addresses critically the work of American artist Allan Kaprow (1927-2006), focusing especially on the tensions Kaprow proposed between 'art' and 'life'. It presents a reconsideration of the most fertile period in Kaprow's career, from his undergraduate studies in the late 1940s to his mature work of the 1970s, prior to the increasing demands made on him to produce re-enactments of his early work. The period 1948-1976 presents a fuller overview of the themes and motivations of his practice than has been scrutinised in the existing literature. The research is based on extensive examination of the Allan Kaprow Papers at the Getty Institute, Los Angeles, which revealed significant and previously unstudied documentation and images. This archive and Kaprow's personal library in Encinitas, California have provided substantial previously unpublished evidence of his early interest in the American pragmatist John Dewey, and reveal many of the motivations for Kaprow's emphasis on change, together with his relational approach to form, context and process. The role of composer John Cage in the development of Kaprow's thoughts on chance helps elucidate the complexities inherent in the development of Kaprow's negotiation between chance and control. The present study also gives, for the first time, a comparative and detailed reading of the five drafts of Kaprow's Assemblage, Environments and Happenings (1966), a reading which sheds fresh light on his art and publications of the period. The thesis also presents a thorough reconsideration of the significance of play in Kaprow's work of the late 1960s and 1970s, including the tensions between and among play, work, hierarchy and liberation. Kaprow's many struggles to conceptualise and reconcile these tensions, and others, such as between audience and participant, private and public and narrative and history, were a necessary feature of the categories of art and artistic identity, including 'Happening', 'Activity' and 'Un-artist' that he helped bring into being.

▼ This thesis offers principles for Christian mission in the present Western milieu derived from a retrieval of the missiology in post-war Scotland of Tom Allan. Allan was a minister, evangelist and theologian of particular public prominence in Scotland and beyond in the period from 1946 to 1964. His missiology focused upon the ‘apostolate of the laity’ through the ‘contextualisation’ of Christianity and Church. It was drawn from diverse, rich sources in Scottish and European theology and tradition. Allan’s gift was to collate and apply such influences contextually to two working-class parishes in Glasgow, and to articulate them within his seminal work on lay evangelism, The Face of My Parish. From 1953 to 1955, Allan was the Field Director of the ‘Tell Scotland’ Movement, which sought to implement his missiology on a national scale. The decision, at Allan’s instigation, to invite Billy Graham to conduct the ‘All-Scotland Crusade’ of 1955 diverted attention from Allan’s lay missiological focus, fatally polarised the differences in emphasis within the Movement, and has since tainted the perception of mission in Scotland. Following consideration of the implementation of Allan’s model of mission, analysis is undertaken of his sources and inspirations, of the underlying causes of the triumphs and failures of his model, and of Allan’s place in mission theology. In particular, inherent tensions are considered between aspects of the model which together straddle the ‘modern’ and ‘postmodern’ to form a ‘tale of two paradigms’; such as the reliance on the institutional Church as both agent and object of mission or the utilisation of mass evangelism, in contrast with the overarching purpose of the lay formation of a New Testament koinonia by a ‘congregational group’. Consideration of Allan’s work is thereafter broadened by considering several contemporaneous streams which further enhanced ‘contextualisation’ of both mission and Church, to be exercised by and for ordinary people: the East Harlem Protestant Parish; the Gorbals Group Ministry; and Robert Mackie, Ian Fraser and Scottish Churches House. Then viewing the work of Allan and his contemporaries through the lens of present global missiology and sociological theory, general principles are derived for mission now. Such principles form the basis of a model within ‘late modernity’ of contextual mission which might move beyond the private/public constraint on religious expression. It is a model of ‘local’ mission in conversation with the ‘global’, by the empowerment of the laity to act within the ‘micro-cultures’ which they inhabit. It is a model which re-asserts the primacy of the ‘whole people of God’; seeking the organic growth of koinonia with or without reference to the institutional Church; through a ‘both/and’ missiology of word and deed; exercising ‘prophetic dialogue’ in ‘bold humility’; in cross-cultural translation as a two-way process towards a fuller ‘interculturation’.

▼ Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a versatile surface-sensitive technique. One of the main challenges is to expand these capabilities to also image the subsurface structure of the sample, for example by using ultrasound. Existing ultrasound methodologies often indicate the phase of the cantilever vibration as the most sensitive subsurface channel. Even if such techniques can be developed to their full potential, it remains a question how accurate and fast these methods can become. To get an idea on the possibilities, we measured the frequency stability, which is similar to the phase stability, of a cantilever in a home-built AFM. We started by making the optical detection system and tested it by measuring the thermomechanical peak of the cantilever. Then the piezo inside the cantilever holder was fixed to drive the cantilever. In AFM the resonance frequency changes due to the tip-sample interaction. However no resonator is perfect, and the resonance frequency will vary even when there is no sample at all. To characterize the smallest tip-sample interactions that can be measured, one needs to characterize the frequency stability of the cantilever without a sample. To do this we have tracked the resonance frequency using a phase-locked loop. The cantilever was driven at its resonance frequency for 2 hours. The stability of its resonance frequency was analysed using the Allan deviation. We saw that for time intervals up to 30 seconds the Allan deviation had a downwards slope of −1 2 which corresponds to white frequency modulation. The short time interval Allan deviation was lower in measurements using a PLL bandwidth of 1000Hz. From the data became clear that using a PLL bandwidth of 1000Hz instead of 100Hz, the resonance frequency was flatter in time but had spikes. The lower PLL bandwidths we used were not able to resolve these spikes, that are probably caused by the unshielded cables used in the setup. Earlier we already saw spikes in the individual photodiode signals caused by these unshielded cables. For intervals longer than 30 seconds this slope for the Allan deviation was +1 (corresponds to drift in resonance frequency). This can be attributed to environmental changes, for instance temperature fluctuations, that change the resonance frequency of the cantilever. The minimum Allan deviation was around 10−6 . This is 11mHz RMS deviation for the 11kHz cantilever. This is equivalent to a 0.18mdeg phase noise, which is already less than the phase-contrast caused by a 50nm gold particle buried 200nm in a soft polymer at 1MHz. The minimum Allan deviation we measured is still 3 orders of magnitude above values found in the literature for resonators with a comparable mass. Shielding cables might improve this. ▼ Despite a substantial amount of critical work that has been produced concerning the transatlantic nature of early nineteenth century Gothic fiction, there remain areas that require further examination. While many of the recent studies on the subject seek answers to larger questions pertaining to Gothic and its relationships to social and political debates surrounding the Atlantic world, some of the fine details of these relationships have gone with little examination. By exploring some disparate but important characteristics of the genre from a transatlantic perspective, this thesis looks to fill some of these gaps left by scholarship that has largely overlooked the minutiae of transatlantic Gothic. Reading the Transatlantic Gothic Fiction of Walter Scott and Edgar Allan Poe looks to provide more detail about publishing histories, peritexts such as epigraphs and footnotes, the grotesque as a literary aesthetic, and the politics that surround these issues. Each chapter engages with scholarly research on the specified subject and views Scott and Poe's engagement with the subject from a transatlantic perspective. The first chapter examines the publication histories of both Scott and Poe not only to put these authors in a cultural and historical context, but also to demonstrate that with a shared network of readers, critics, editors, printers, and publishers, both Scott and Poe faced a volatile and enigmatic industry that fueled what some might consider to be a certain lack of confidence or insecurity in their more Gothic literature or, at the very least, the Gothic elements in their texts. In response, these authors began to position their works into a cultural model with an aim to please both the critics who were deriding Gothic fiction and the readers who still craved the supernatural. As I demonstrate in Chapter Two, epigraphs became a way to position their works into a respected cultural tradition, while footnotes became tools to tone down the supernatural by making it more plausible. As their texts were becoming more recognized as works of art, Scott and Poe began to develop and refine their own set of aesthetics. The third chapter explores what would become one of the most relevant aesthetics of Gothic fiction, the grotesque. Finally, Chapter Four briefly examines some of the political ideologies of Scott and Poe not only because politics was such an important part of early Gothic fiction, but also because the first three chapters of this research touch on the political positions of Scott and Poe.

Des pistes théoriques sont proposées pour faciliter l’étude de la relation entre sens et connaissance. La troisième partie clarifie le problème de la satisfaction de la curiosité naturelle et déploie les conséquences théoriques d’une série d’expériences menée en Europe sur le problème des émotions esthétiques. L’hypothèse selon laquelle les émotions esthétiques correspondraient à une satisfaction de la curiosité naturelle est examinée aux niveaux biologique et psychologique. Le cas particulier de la relation entre température et cognition observable dans le cas des frissons non-thermorégulateurs est discuté et une série d’hypothèses physiques et biologiques sont proposées. Un modèle formel de la fluence de traitement est introduit pour faciliter son étude empirique. Une description mathématique du frisson psychogénique est proposée. Une description mathématique de la tension narrative est proposée. En annexe sont détaillés les résultats d’une série de cinq études psychophysiologiques concernant les frissons psychogéniques. Ces cinq études ont été répliquées avec succès trois fois sur deux populations européennes distinctes. Les résultats démontrent notamment que l’incohérence inhibe les frissons psychogéniques positifs.

The thesis concerns the problem of natural curiosity. The first part deals with the biological notion of the instinct and abstracts seventeen observable properties allowing the empirical study of instinctual systems in the laboratory. The second part clarifies the problem of natural curiosity, exposes that of human intelligence and details the evolution of exploratory behavior in the course of phylogeny. The notion of the instinct is applied to the description of knowledge-acquisition in humans. The theoretical consequences of this application are detailed. The logic of curiosity is examined at the philosophical, historical, psychological, biological and mathematical levels. A formal model of knowledge-acquisition is proposed. ▼ Esta Dissertação de Mestrado apresenta análises do ponto de vista narrativo nos contos "A queda da Casa de Usher", "O coração denunciador" e "Berenice", de Edgar Allan Poe, com base nas teorias de Norman Friedman, abordada por Ligia Chiappini Moraes Leite (2002), e de Wayne C. Booth (1980), a respeito do narrador pouco digno de confiança. Também são utilizadas algumas considerações teóricas abordadas por Poe na "Filosofia da composição" (1846) e em outros ensaios traduzidos por Baudelaire (2003). Em se tratando de teoria fantástica, abordam-se considerações de Todorov (2004), Freud (1919), Jung, (1951) apud Philippov (1999) e Castex (1961) apud Philippov (1999). Verifica-se que todas as obras analisadas são narradas em primeira pessoa. Isso significa que o narrador é sempre uma personagem participante da história. Foi possível constatar que há, em todas elas, uma contradição entre o que o narrador se propõe a fazer e aquilo lhe é permitido pela situação em que ele se insere. As tentativas de ajudar um amigo, que vive em uma mansão cheia de melancolia, a aliviar sua agitação nervosa, são todas vãs, já que é o dono da mansão conduz o narrador a realizar suas atividades habituais. No segundo conto, a personagem que não aceita ser chamada de louca e quer demonstrar toda a calma, precaução e perfeição que teve ao matar o velho de quem cuidava, sofre de uma acuidade do sentido da audição, que faz com que ela ouça o bater do coração do homem assassinado. Este som mostra os limites entre a calma e a fúria do narrador, até o momento em que ele, acreditando que os policiais podiam ouvir o mesmo e estavam zombando dele, confessa o crime. Por fim, o narrador Egaeus é consciente de sempre teve uma má saúde e reconhece que a sua realidade de vida é diferente da de outras personagens ao seu redor. Apesar de dizer que não pretende convencer, Egaeus faz longas explicações sobre as características de sua doença e tenta evitar linguagem técnica para que o leitor comum possa compreendê-lo. Ele espera que a revelação de sua consciência do crime, e da consequente desonra familiar, possa amenizar sua culpa. ▼ The late Allan Kaprow’s notion of reinvention functions as a model that carefully systematizes future instantiations of the artist’s work. Deftly articulated through his writings, reinventions are not the same as reconstructions, re‐presentations, or re‐creations because the term denotes that such reinvented versions “differ markedly from their originals.”¹ What is reinvention to Kaprow, and what are its limits as an approach when it is transferred to curators, scholars and other artists making his work? Looking at the example of the traveling retrospective Allan Kaprow—Art as Life, realized just after Kaprow’s death in 2006, this thesis centers on the production of the artist’s ephemeral works in the 2008 presentation at the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles. By defining and conceiving of reinvention as an artists’ methodology, this thesis argues that reinvention can be theorized, despite hierarchies between artists’ writing and critical discourse. This study reveals how this artists’ methodology changes when it is transferred from the original artist to curators, scholars and other artists. It looks at such changes by focusing on aspects such as authorship, artist’s intention, and authority. This thesis demonstrates that reinvention can be used to analyze works in the MOCA show, including Push and Pull: A Furniture Comedy for Hans Hofmann (1963/2008), Words (1962/2008), and Fluids (1967/2008)—pieces that were also realized in Kaprow’s first retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1967—as well as other instances of reinvention.
