Esta pesquisa fez uma aplicaÃÃo do Valor de Shapley e do Ãndice de Poder de Shapley-Shubik no contexto da Teoria dos Jogos Cooperativos, com enfoque na repartiÃÃo da renda gerada nas bilheterias dos jogos do Campeonato Cearense de Futebol de 2010. Os dados foram coletados da pÃgina na internet da FederaÃÃo Cearense de Futebol-FCF, do blog Contexto Esportivo e do portal da transparÃncia do Tribunal de Contas do MunicÃpio-TCM. Aplicou-se o Valor de Shapley e o Ãndice de Poder de Shapley-Shubik para classificar os clubes de acordo com os ganhos de renda lÃquida obtidos nesta alocaÃÃo. Os resultados mostraram que a alocaÃÃo do Valor de Shapley Ã mais equitativa, de modo que clubes como QuixadÃ, Limoeiro e Boa Viagem, que obtiveram arrecadaÃÃo negativa pelo sistema de rateio atual da renda lÃquida, passaram a auferir renda lÃquida positiva com a alocaÃÃo do Valor de Shapley, de modo que pode-se dizer que estes clubes sÃo subsidiados com a repartiÃÃo de renda via valor de Shapley. Verificou-se que os clubes de maiores rendas lÃquidas obtiveram maiores valores para o Ãndice de Poder Shapley-Shubik, com exceÃÃo apenas do Fortaleza Esporte Clube.

This research is an application of the Shapley Value and the Power Index Shapley-Shubik as studied in the context of the Cooperative Game Theory. Specifically, this paper studied the distribution of net income generated at the box office of the FederaÃÃo Cearense de Futebol-FCF during the 2010 football championship. The data were collected from the website of FCF, as well as from the Contexto Esportivo blog, and from the ransparency portal of the Tribunal de Contas do MunicÃpio-TCM. The Shapley value and the power index Shapley-Shubik were applied to rank the football clubs participants according to the net income gains achieved in this allocation. The results revealed that the Shapley value application is more equal because the minor participants clubs like QuixadÃ, Limoeiro e Boa Viagem, with negative receipts from games in the previous status, get now positive ones from those techniques. The results from Power Index Shapley-Shubik show that the bigger the football club the bigger the net receipt from games, except to Fortaleza Esporte Clube.

L’étude de la planification entre partenaires coopérant au sein d’une chaine logistique au niveau tactique fait l’objet de cette thèse. Le présent travail se focalise plus particulièrement sur la coordination des processus de planification des activités de transport et de production, autour d’une nouvelle approche fondée sur la théorie des jeux. Deux situations de coopération sont considérées, selon le caractère homogène ou hétérogène des partenaires ; ainsi une première étude est menée sur un ensemble d’opérateurs de transport pour ensuite être étendue à la relation entre l’entreprise manufacturière et les transporteurs qui travaillent avec elle. L’expérimentation s’appuie sur des modèles mathématiques en programmation linéaire pour simuler les processus de planification des différents groupes de partenaires (également appelés coalitions), un protocole de coopération utilisant certaines propriétés liées à la théorie des jeux et sur une répartition équitable des gains / coûts telle que préconisée par la valeur de Shapley. Les modèles et l’ensemble du protocole sont appliqués à deux cas d’étude basés sur des jeux de données réalistes.

This thesis focuses on the collaboration between partners inside supply chain at the tactical level of planning. This work aims to develop a new approach based on game theory to solve the problem of coordinating processes concerned by production and transportation planning decision making. Two types of coalitions cooperative games are implemented according to the nature of partners: the cooperation between homogeneous partners concerns multiple transport operators while the other case is more on the relationships between heterogeneous partners including one manufacturer and multiple transport operators. The coordination is supported by mathematical models implemented in linear programming which simulate the planning process within the various possible pools of partners, also called “coalitions”. These models are used in a gains/costs sharing protocol between the partners which is based on the Shapley value. Some basic properties are checked in order to verify if the cooperation is valid. The models and the protocol are assessed on theoretical test cases based on realistic data sets.

La colinéarité rend difficile l’utilisation de la régression linéaire pour estimer l’importance des variables dans les études de marché. D’autres approches ont donc été utilisées.Concernant la décomposition de la variance expliquée, une démonstration de l’égalité entre les méthodes lmg-Shapley et celle de Johnson avec deux prédicteurs est proposée. Il a aussi été montré que la méthode de Fabbris est différente des méthodes de Genizi et Johnson et que les CAR scores de deux prédicteurs ne s’égalisent pas lorsque leur corrélation tend vers 1.Une méthode nouvelle, weifila (weighted first last) a été définie et publiée en 2015.L’estimation de l’importance des variables avec les forêts aléatoires a également été analysée et les résultats montrent une bonne prise en compte des non-linéarités.Avec les réseaux bayésiens, la multiplicité des solutions et le recours à des restrictions et choix d’expert militent pour utilisation prudente même si les outils disponibles permettent une aide dans le choix des modèles.Le recours à weifila ou aux forêts aléatoires est recommandé plutôt que lmg-Shapley sans négliger les approches structurelles et les modèles conceptuels.Mots clés :régression, décomposition de la variance, importance, valeur de Shapley, forêts aléatoires, réseaux bayésiens.

AbstractLinear regression is used in Market Research but faces difficulties due to multicollinearity. Other methods have been considered.A demonstration of the equality between lmg-Shapley and and Johnson methods for Variance Decomposition has been proposed. Also this research has shown that the decomposition proposed by Fabbris is not identical to those proposed by Genizi and Johnson, and that the CAR scores of two predictors do not equalize when their correlation tends towards 1. A new method, weifila (weighted first last) has been proposed and published in 2015.Also we have shown that permutation importance using Random Forest enables to take into account non linear relationships and deserves broader usage in Marketing Research.Regarding Bayesian Networks, there are multiple solutions available and expert driven restrictions and decisions support the recommendation to be careful in their usage and presentation, even if they allow to explore possible structures and make simulations.In the end, weifila or random forests are recommended instead of lmg-Shapley knowing that the benefit of structural and conceptual models should not be underestimated.Keywords :Linear regression, Variable Importance, Shapley Value, Random Forests, Bayesian Networks

D’après Cisco, le trafic mobile de données augmentera d’un facteur 7 entre 2016 et 2021. Pour faire face à l’augmentation du trafic, les opérateurs mobile dimensionnent le réseau, ce qui s’accompagne d’une augmentation de sa consommation d’énergie et de son empreinte Carbonne. En outre, les marges financières des opérateurs baissent. Ainsi, le revenu global généré par le secteur des télécommunications a connu une baisse de 4% entre 2014 et 2015 d’après l’union internationale des télécommunications (UIT). Ces préoccupations ont suscité l’intérêt de la communauté scientifique pour la réduction de la consommation électrique des réseaux. Des études dans la littérature estiment l’énergie consommée par les services sur les équipements réseaux en se focalisant sur la consommation variable. La consommation énergétique d’un équipement réseau est composée d’une composante fixe et d’une composante variable. Dans cette thèse, nous partageons la responsabilité des catégories de service dans la consommation fixe du réseau en utilisant la valeur de Shapley. Dans un premier temps, nous considérons un réseau d’accès mobile et partageons la responsabilité des catégories de service qu’il fournit dans la consommation fixe. Nous définissons 5 catégories de service, à savoir, le «Streaming», le Web, le téléchargement, la voix et les autres services de données. En outre, nous traitons le cas de figure où certaines catégories de service sont obligatoires. Etant donné la complexité algorithmique de la valeur de Shapley, nous en proposons une forme approchée qui permet d’en réduire considérablement le temps de calcul. Ensuite, nous considérons le réseau de bout-en-bout, c’est-à-dire, l’accès mobile, l’accès fixe, la collecte, le coeur IP, le coeur mobile, les registres et les plateformes de service. Pour chaque segment, nous partageons la responsabilité des catégories de service dans la consommation fixe en appliquant notre modèle de partage basé sur la valeur de Shapley. L’analyse des résultats montre que le service «Streaming» consomme le plus d’énergie quel que soit le segment de réseau considéré, à l’exception des registres. Pour finir, nous traitons de la modélisation de l’efficacité énergétique des catégories de service. Dans un premier temps, nous calculons l’efficacité énergétique des catégories de service étant donné une station de base avec et sans «sleep mode». Ensuite, nous calculons l’efficacité énergétique des catégories de service étant donné un réseau d’accès mobile et considérant les cas avec et sans catégories de service obligatoires. Aussi étudions-nous les conditions pour ne pas détériorer l’efficacité énergétique du réseau au cours du temps en fonction des scénarios de dimensionnement

This work aimed at to analyze the allocation of the financial costs in projects of multiple uses in the section of water resources, among different purposes of use of the water. Such projects are cheaper because, they present scale savings due to the shared use of the resources, thus, the central problem that appears is as allocating the costs among the participants of the project. It was taken as example the fishing reservoir in the municipal district of Capistrano, and the one of Figueiredo in the municipal district of High Saint, both in CearÃ. The methodology used to allocate the costs among the purposes of the projects was given by the rule of defined allocation as value of Shapley, belonging to the theory of the cooperative games. For the project of the Fishing reservoir, the allocated values of the total cost among the integral purposes, they satisfy the beginnings of justness, resulting in a fair and efficient solution, what indicates for that case studied that the solution is in the nucleus of the game. A different conclusion is removed of the results generated for the other used example. The obtained allocations are not in agreement with one of the beginnings of justness, indicating a solution no belonging to the nucleus of the game, which defines impartiality in the allocations obtained for the project of Figueiredo's reservoir.

Este trabalho objetivou analisar a alocaÃÃo dos custos financeiros em projetos de usos mÃltiplos no setor de recursos hÃdricos, entre diferentes finalidades de uso da Ãgua. Tais projetos sÃo mais baratos porque, apresentam economias de escala devido ao uso compartilhado dos recursos, assim, o problema central que surge Ã como alocar os custos entre os participantes do projeto. Tomou-se como exemplo o reservatÃrio Pesqueiro no municÃpio de Capistrano, e o de Figueiredo no municÃpio de Alto Santo, ambos no CearÃ. A metodologia utilizada para alocar os custos entre as finalidades dos projetos foi dada pela regra de alocaÃÃo definida como valor de Shapley, pertencente Ã teoria dos jogos cooperativos. Para o projeto do reservatÃrio Pesqueiro, os valores alocados do custo total entre as finalidades integrantes, satisfazem os princÃpios de equidade, resultando em uma soluÃÃo justa e eficiente, o que indica para esse caso estudado que a soluÃÃo estÃ no nÃcleo do jogo. Uma distinta conclusÃo Ã retirada dos resultados gerados para o outro exemplo utilizado. As alocaÃÃes obtidas nÃo estÃo de acordo com um dos princÃpios de equidade, indicando uma soluÃÃo nÃo pertencente ao nÃcleo do jogo, que define imparcialidade nas alocaÃÃes obtidas para o projeto do reservatÃrio de Figueiredo.

▼ Resource allocation refers to problems where there is a set of resources to be allocated efficiently among a group of agents. The distributed nature of resource allocation motivates modeling it as a distributed control problem. One of the strong modeling frameworks for distributed control problems is the game theoretic framework. Game theory provides mathematical models that aid in studying the aggregate behavior of a group of decision makers. The main challenge in modeling a distributed optimization problem as a game is the design of agents' utility functions. A utility function is designed as a distribution rule of some welfare; and the goal is to distribute the welfare in a way that incentivizes players to land in a "good" equilibrium point. The ratio between the performance of the worst possible equilibrium point and the optimal outcome of a game is called the price of anarchy. A distribution rule that distributes the welfare exactly is called budget-balanced, and one that distributes the welfare with excess is said to satisfy a relaxed budget-balance condition. On the other hand, if it causes a deficit we say that it violates the budget-balance condition. In this thesis, we study the design of utility functions in resource allocation games that minimize the price of anarchy. We compare two families of utility functions that guarantee equilibrium existence, namely the Shapley value and the marginal contribution. The Shapley value is a budget-balanced distribution rule, while the marginal contribution satisfies the relaxed budget-balance condition given that the welfare being distributed is submodular. We derive price of anarchy bounds for the marginal contribution utility in resource allocation games and compare them to those for the Shapley value, derived in the literature. We also perform a small-scale study for a wider range of utility functions. Lastly, we examine the connection between the price of anarchy and the satisfiability of the budget-balance conditions of the utility designs. ▼ We consider a decentralized, two-echelon supply chain where the upper echelon – the supplier – bears the inventory risk. To service the retailers, the supplier either keeps inventory reserved for each of her customers or else pools inventory to share among her customers. The common insight regarding inventory pooling is that it reduces costs and so increases profits for the supply chain party carrying inventory. However, it has recently been shown that inventory pooling may indeed reduce the total supply chain profits. We further show that inventory pooling may reduce supply chain profits even under traditional service contracts based on the frequently invoked measure of service, probability of stock-out. We model the inventory transactions among the retailers and the supplier as a cooperative game. The players have the option of reserving inventory or forming inventory-pooling coalitions. The total profit of the coalitions is allotted to the players using a profit-sharing mechanism based on Shapley value. We analyze the properties of the proposed profit-sharing scheme in two steps. We first consider a stylized model with two retailers who are not necessarily identical. Then we extend the analysis to an arbitrary number of identical retailers. In both cases, we assume the demand across retailers is independent. We find that the Shapley value allocations coordinate the supply chain and are individually rational. However for more than two retailers, they may not be in the core. Even when they satisfy all the stability properties, including membership in the core, they may be perceived unfair since a player's allocation can exceed his contribution to the total supply chain profit. In addition to analyzing the stability properties of the proposed allocation mechanism, we are also interested in the types of behavior the mechanism induces in the players. We find that the retailers prefer pooling partners with either very high or low service level requirements and the supplier prefers retailers with low service requirements since this gives her the ability to maximize her profit allocation. Finally, we analyze the effects of demand variance on the allocations and the profitability of strategic retailer coalitions. Advisors/Committee Members: Bartholdi III, John J. ▼ With increasing demand for social network based activities, it is very important to understand not only the structural properties of social networks but also how social networks form, to better exploit their promise and potential. We believe the existing methods and tools for social network analysis have a major inadequacy: they do not capture the behavior (such as rationality and intelligence) of individuals nor do they model the strategic interactions that occur among these individuals. Game theory is a natural tool to overcome this inadequacy since it provides rigorous mathematical models of strategic interaction among autonomous, intelligent, and rational agents. This thesis brings out how a game theoretic approach helps analyze social networks better. In particular, we study three contemporary and pertinent problems in social networks using a game theoretic approach: determining influential individuals for viral marketing, community detection, and social network formation. The first problem deals with determining influential nodes in social networks for diffusion of information. We present an efficient heuristic algorithm (SPIN) to this problem based on cooperative game theoretic techniques. The running time of SPIN is independent of the number of influential nodes to be determined. Moreover, unlike the popular benchmark algorithms, the proposed method works well with both submodular and non-submodular objective functions for diffusion of information. In the second problem, we design a novel game theoretic approach to partition a given undirected, unweighted graph into dense subgraphs (or communities). The approach is based on determining a Nash stable partition which is a pure strategy Nash equilibrium of an appropriately defined strategic form game. In the proposed graph partitioning game, the nodes of the graph are the players and the strategy of a node is to decide to which community it ought to belong. The utility of each node is defined to depend entirely on the node’s local neighborhood. A Nash stable partition (NSP) of this game is a partition consisting of communities such that no node has incentive to defect from its community to any other community. Given any graph, we prove that an NSP always exists and we also derive a lower bound on the fraction of intra-community edges in any NSP. Our approach leads to an efficient heuristic algorithm to detect communities in social networks with the additional feature of automatically determining the number of communities. The focus of the third problem is to understand the patterns behind the evolution of social networks that helps in predicting the likely topologies of social networks. The topology of social networks plays a crucial role in determining the outcomes in several social and economic situations such as trading networks, recommendation networks. ▼ Supply chain management has been described as an integration of business process that is associated with operational management and marketing problems, such as inventory control, information sharing and supply chain coordination. In contrast, game theory is generally described as the study of mathematical models concerning how rational individuals and organizations make decisions in a competitive environment. Thus, the theory of non-cooperative and cooperative game became a natural choice used for studying supply chain related problems, especially in analysing the interactions and coordination between supply chain members, due to competition and cooperation existing amongst supply chain members. Many existing studies in supply chain management made an assumption that shortages are not permitted, which is unrealistic; moreover, these studies totally ignored the consumer who is the terminal member of supply chain. Consumer’s preference and purchasing behaviour are very influential in determining supplier and retailer’s decisions. Conversely, the consumer’s welfare will be affected by supplier and retailer’s decisions. Furthermore, most supply chain games assume symmetric information, which are games whereby each player has the same information on other players’ characteristics such as payoffs, cost structure, decisions or beliefs. Otherwise, we have games with asymmetric information. Under asymmetric information, each player has a type space, which comprises player’s private information known only to player himself but not to the other players. In order to improve supply chain performance under uncertainty, mechanism design, which is a contractual game of asymmetric information, deserves more study. In addition, with three or more players, a comprehensive investigation into how one can obtain the joint probability distribution of players’ types when these types are correlated and each has a different marginal distribution is not available. In this thesis, we investigated several supply chain models under both symmetric and asymmetric information structure in two categories: non-cooperative game and cooperative game. We first investigated two-player seller-buyer supply chain games with an assumption that shortages are permitted as a decision variable. The effects of shortage to players’ decisions and profits have been investigated through several non-cooperative Stackelberg games and a cooperative game under symmetric information structure. For games under asymmetric information structure, we employed the mechanism design to improve both seller and buyer’s profit. We then proposed a three-person supply chain model by including consumer as a player into seller-buyer supply chain. ▼ La rápida expansión de los servicios móviles y de la demanda emergente de aplicaciones multimedia han dado lugar a un impresionante crecimiento del tráfico. Operadores de redes móviles (MNOs) tratará de extender su infraestructura mediante la instalación de más estaciones base (BSs), en un esfuerzo por aumentar la capacidad de la red y satisfacer las apremiantes demandas de tráfico. Además, para cumplir con las exigencias escalada, redes heterogéneas (HetNets), constituyen la nueva tendencia de las redes de próxima generación. La infraestructura implica un aumento en los gastos de capital y tiene un impacto directo en el consumo de energía a la red, lo que resulta en un aumento de los gastos operacionales. La investigación de soluciones de eficiencia energética hará bajar el consumo de energía y el coste de la red. La comunidad científica se ha desplazado hacia la investigación de los sistemas de desactivación de BSs. Estos esquemas proponen que parte de la infraestructura se puede cdesectivarse, cuando el tráfico es bajo, mientras que los BSs activas extender su cobertura al servicio de la red. Esta tesis ofrece contribuciones al campo de la BSs desconexión para las redes y HetNets con uno o multiples MNOs, proponiendo mecanismos que mejoran diferentes aspectos del rendimiento de la red. La desactivación de BS,s la tendencia innovadora de compartir infraestructura y la colaboración impulsada financieramente entre las partes implicadas de las redes actuales y futuras prometen mejoras significativas en términos de ahorro energético y económico. Las principales contribuciones de tesis se dividen en tres partes, que se describen a continuación. La primera parte de la tesis introduce innovadora apagar enfoques en entornos de un solo operador, donde se despliegan sólo macro BSs. Las estrategias propuestas explotan las características de tráfico (por ejemplo, la distribución de los usuarios, el volumen de tráfico, etc.) y las características distintivas de las redes (por ejemplo, la posición BS, topología, etc.). Análisis teórico y simulaciones muestran la mejora del rendimiento ofrecido por las estrategias de conmutación con respecto a la eficiencia energética. La segunda parte de la tesis explora un reto diferente en la planificación de la red. La coexistencia de múltiples operadores en la misma zona geográfica ha motivado un nuevo modelo de negocio, conocida como la compartición de infraestructura. Se propone un esquema de desactivación basada en itinerancia, teniendo en cuenta la racionalidad y los intereses en conflicto de los operadores de redes móviles. Los resultados teóricos y de simulación muestran que nuestra propuesta mejora significativamente la eficiencia energética, garantizando al mismo tiempo el rendimiento en escenarios realistas. Suite à l'augmentation continue du trafic de données mobiles, la technologie 5G a été introduite pour offrir une capacité et un débit de données plus élevé. Ceci impose de nouvelles méthodes pour renforcer les capacités comme l’intégration de petites cellules, ou ajouter des nouvelles fréquences sans licence, autour de 2.4 et 5 GHz des réseaux WiFi pour former les réseaux hétérogènes. Pour ces raisons, la coopération entre WiFi et 4G ou Long Term Evolution (LTE) est nécessaire. Dans cette thèse, différents algorithmes ont été proposés pour assurer une coopération optimale entre WiFi et 4G dans le chemin du système 5G pour les réseaux hétérogènes. Notre premier algorithme calcule la valeur de la charge des canaux de la couche physique du 802.11n. Ayant cette valeur, nous présentons notre second algorithme qui propose de dimensionner un réseau WiFi pour décharger le réseau 4G en transférant les utilisateurs, qui consomment le plus de débits de données, au réseau WiFi. Finalement, nous avons calculé le profit de la coopération entre WiFi et LTE en utilisant la valeur de Shapley.

Following the continuous increase of the mobile data traffic, the 5G technology has been introduced to offer additional capacity and higher data rate. WiFi APs integration with mobile networks are considered as potential candidate towards the heterogenous networks. We first propose in this thesis an algorithm for the estimation of the WiFi physical channels load through the observation of the non-overlapped channels and estimating as a result the load of the entire physical channels. Then, in our second proposed algorithm, we propose to dimension the WiFi network to offload LTE network and transfer the users that consume the high level of transmission power. The algorithm calculates the minimum needed number of APs that will support the extra offloaded LTE traffic. Finally, we evaluate the benefit of the cooperation by estimating the profit share of LTE and WiFi. We calculate for each player the profit using a coalition game concept based on Shapley value.

▼ This dissertation examines the theoretical roots of index decomposition analysis (IDA), fills in some key gaps, extends this method, and applies it to three cases to provide policy and planning insights. IDA is a widely used tool in energy use and pollutant emissions studies to estimate the directions and magnitude of the driving forces of a change in a key economic variable. The usefulness of index decomposition analysis resides in the fact that policy makers and planners sometimes need a way to distinguish how one factor affects a certain change of interest at the macro level when the change is a combined effect of multiple factors on a group of items. IDA can separate the contributions of drivers to the explained variable change and can aggregate the effects at the group level. Therefore, it provides a quantitative way to reveal the significance of drivers to a change and can help policy makers and planners develop remedies where necessary. ❧ This dissertation consists of six chapters. The theoretical foundation and nearly a century of studies on index numbers were summarized briefly in Chapter 1 and in detail in Chapter 2. Chapter 1 also describes how this dissertation is organized. By reviewing the history and recent developments in index numbers and IDA, I identified several remaining issues and proposed a new approach to generate multi-factor multilateral index numbers. I discussed the issue of consistencies in the ranking of factors between multiplicative IDAs and their additive counterparts. I also united both the widely-used Laspeyres-based and Divisia-based index numbers under the framework of discrete approximation of Divisia index, which has the advantage to identify the source of differences across index numbers and to reveal the link between the multiplicative index numbers and their additive counterparts. ❧ Index numbers were first studied in the field of wealth and income to obtain the price level and quantity level changes between multiple time periods and/or areas. Major contributions include the derivation of index number formulas/approaches, the meaning of index numbers, and their connections with economic theory (see, e.g. Fisher, 1922; Samuelson & Swamy, 1974; Diewert, 1976; van Veelen & van de Weide, 2008). IDA can be seen as the extension of index number theory to the field of energy use and pollutant emissions, in which the number of explanatory factors usually exceeds two. Major contributions in IDA include the extension of the index numbers to the new field, the derivation of multi-factor index number formulas, the introduction of additive decomposition, and the derivation of the additive counterparts of multiplicative index number formulas (see, e.g., Ang, 1994; Ang, 2004; Sun, 1997). ❧ We identified multi-factor multilateral IDA as a gap in the literature and suggested that the Shapley value can be used to derive transitive multilateral index numbers. ▼ This thesis addresses two issues which arise in the context of airline revenue management. In the first part of the thesis, we develop an incentive mechanism to prevent revenue leakage caused by customers buying down. In the second part of the thesis, we discuss the revenue sharing problem between alliance partners and develop a mechanism by which the combined revenue can be distributed fairly among them. Situations which give rise to impossibility and possibility results are established. The practice of revenue management, employs the principle of differential pricing of a product based on various product restrictions. These product restrictions segment the market in such a manner so as to maximize the revenue. Airline industry which pioneered the practice of revenue management generally prices low for those who book early and high for those who book late for essentially the same seat. The low-fare products are targeted towards the market segment comprising of those customers who have a low valuation (reservation price) for the product (who are typically leisure customers, also called as low-fare customers).The high-fare product, on the other hand is targeted at the market segment comprising of customers who have a high valuation (reservation price) for the product (business class customers, also called as high-fare customers). However, it may happen that customers with high valuation for the product may also buy the low-fare product if it is available. This behavior of high-fare customers buying a low-fare product due to its availability is called the customer buy-down behavior. Such a customer behavior causes revenue leakage to the airline industry. Revenue management literature that primarily focuses on pricing and seat inventory control does not account for the customer buy-down behavior. In Part I of the thesis we address this issue of customer buy-down behavior. We develop an incentive mechanism in the form of a new product bundle which would attract only the high-fare customer. High fare customers such as business class customers typically have repeated travel plans, while low fare customers such as leisure travelers typically do not travel repeatedly. The proposed incentive mechanism takes advantage of this characteristic of high fare customers that distinguishes them from the low fare customers. In general, high fare product permits cancellation and does not impose any travel restrictions, and a low fare product, on the other hand does not permit cancellation and has other travel restrictions associated with them. A high fare customer with potential future travel plan might associate uncertainties with respect to travel dates and his ability to procure a low fare ticket for future travel. This uncertainty is exploited in the proposed product bundle. The new product bundle permits the customer to cancel the ticket for the future journey and relaxes the restrictions associated with the requested day and the future travel day.
