▼ This thesis examines Shaftesbury’s Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times (1711), and revisits his concepts of aesthetics and ethics by providing a key to understanding his controversial methodology and definitions of terms. Kubota claims that Shaftesbury's main purpose in writing Characteristics is to defend the concept of innate ideas of beauty and moral goodness against the views of Hobbes and Locke. Not only is Characteristics a significant work of moral and aesthetic theory, but it is Shaftesbury’s attempt to act on his theory and put it into practice. Through describing the place of actual life experiences, he intends to show that the various aspects of the concepts he discusses contribute to the whole or the end of the universe, to realize ultimate beauty. Kubota claims that his challenging use of terminology – in which words have many definitions – may be understood in light of his teleological and dualistic view of humanity. His view of dualism and the dialectic categorization of each term, showing the two opposed or distinct characters of each term and the integrated character of the two, reveals either a partial or an integrated human condition. Thus, he changes the meaning of his terms depending on which level he is discussing. Kubota argues that his concept of an innate moral and aesthetic sense is found in the third character of terms such as the third manner (miscellaneous manner) which is the integrated state of both poetical manner and methodical manner, the third truth (moral truth) which is the integrated state of both poetical manner and historical manner, and the third affection (natural affection) which is the integrated state of self-affection and public-affection. It is only this integrated self which reveals the innate moral sense, in which one can experience and create true beauty, virtue, and enthusiasm, resulting in a state of happiness where one is able to serve both the self and the public good.

▼ This dissertation investigates a number of ways in which an eighteenth century British philosophical movement known as “moral sense theory” influenced the development of German philosopher Immanuel Kant’s (1724-1804) moral theory. I illustrate that Kant found both moral sense theory’s conception of moral judgement and its conception of moral motivation appealing during the earliest stage of his philosophical development, but eventually came to reject its conception of moral judgement, though even in his early writings Kant preserves certain features of its conception of moral motivation. In the mature presentation of his moral philosophy Kant offers detailed objections to moral sense theory’s conception of moral judgement, but I illustrate that, in opposition to the claims of many recent interpreters, his considered understanding of moral motivation has only a few superficial features in common with the view presented by Hutcheson in particular. Important for an understanding of Kant’s mature conception of motivation is also the thought of Adam Smith (1723-1790), a thinker who is not part of but was highly influenced by moral sense theory. I illustrate that Smith’s notion of the attitude of “regard” for what he calls the “general rules of conduct,” as well as his conception of the “sense of duty,” influenced Kant’s conception of “respect [Achtung]” for the moral law. Finally, I illustrate that Kant’s understanding of the pleasure associated with acting morally, what he calls “self-contentment [Selbstzufriedenheit],” can be clarified in light of how Hutcheson solves a problem related to the pleasure of the moral sense.

▼ Le présent ouvrage souhaite montrer que la création de l’esthétique philosophique par Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, ainsi que la multiplication des écrits théoriques sur l’art orientés à partir de la problématique du goût, sont deux tentatives différentes de répondre à la question métaphysique du dualisme des substances ainsi qu’aux problèmes posés par leurs interactions réciproques. L’enjeu de cette recherche est double. Il s’agit, d’une part, de donner la réplique à Kant qui, dans un note devenue célèbre de la CRP, affirme qu’« esthétique » et « critique du goût » sont des termes synonymes. Il sera démontré que ces deux termes ne sont pas synonymes, qu’esthétique philosophique et critique du goût ne sont pas deux manières équivalentes de questionner l’art, bien qu’elles partagent, sur le plan ontologique, un certain nombre de présupposés. D’autre part, et c’est là que l’enjeu historiographique croise l’enjeu philosophique, nous verrons que ces présupposés ne sont pas propres au 18e siècle mais proviennent d’une longue tradition des rapports texte-image, du statut théologique et ontologique de l’image, de la représentation sculptée, de la mímêsis. Aussi, l’intérêt des questions formulées à partir du constat de l’échec patent de la métaphysique de l’Art et du caractère très largement insuffisant des esthétiques du goût dépasse largement le cadre du siècle des Lumières.
This book intends to demonstrate that the creation of philosophical aesthetics by A. G. Baumgarten, as well as the multiplication of theoretical writings about art guided by the problematics of taste, are two different ways to propose a solution to solve the metaphysical question of the dualism of substances and the problem of theirs mutual interactions. The stake is double. First, it is a response to Kant, who says in a CPR’s note which became famous that « aesthetics » and « critics of taste » are the same thing. It will be shown that it is not the case, although those two approaches share similar presuppositions. We will also see, and on that point the historiographic stake meets the philosophical one, that those presuppositions are not specific to the 18th century but came from the long tradition of text-image relations, of theological and ontological status of image, of carved representation, of mímêsis. So, the interest of the questions which are formulated because of the evident failure of metaphysics of Art and the failings of aesthetics of taste exceeds widely the framework of Enlightenment.

▼ This thesis explores how the experience of reclusion in free landscapes and private gardens of Confucian China and Enlightenment Europe contributed to people’s moral improvement by cultivating good passions such as temperance, encouraging introspection, increasing the sense of responsibility towards society and rendering erudite individuals prompt to perform their public duty as politicians and civil servants. The thesis is based on the comparative analysis of philosophical concepts, works of art, poems and cultural practices in order to highlight the similarities and divergences between Chinese and European – particularly British and French - eremitic landscape dwelling. Taking into account the historical context in which two important systems of thought were developed in different geographic regions, the research brings together the state-sanctioned Confucian ethics with Enlightenment Deism which, inspired by Roman Stoics, played a pivotal role in the promulgation of reclusive landscape culture and the creation of non-geometrical gardens used as retreats in the eighteenth-century Europe. Investigating human relationships with the natural environment and organized society, as well as views on interpersonal relationships, established religion and matters of cultural heritage, the thesis shows that gardens where Confucian literati and socially privileged Europeans, who had espoused Enlightenment ideals, liked to retire comprised mediating spaces between the private realm and the public sphere, solitude and public action. Eremitic landscape dwelling did not derive from a sentiment of contempt for the world or from a selfish desire to avoid hardships. Rather, this noble form of reclusion whose purpose was the cultivation of virtue and humaneness revolved around the greatest interest of individuals and the welfare of society.

Tutkimus koostuu kuudesta julkaistusta tai julkaistavaksi hyväksytystä artikkelista sekä johdannosta. Johdanto sisältää yleisesityksen tutkimuksen aihepiiristä ja keskeisistä käsitteistä, tutkimuksen johtopäätökset sekä artikkeleiden yhteenvedot. Ensinunäisessä artikkelissa käsitellään 1700-luvulla esitettyjä näkemyksiä "moraalisesta kauneudesta" ja "kauniista sielusta". Tarkasteltavana on etenkin lordi Shaftesburyn ja Friedrich Schillerin filosofia. Artikkelit 2-5 keskittyvät puolestaan Iris Murdochin ja Martha Nussbaumin hyve-eettisiin näkemyksiin. Kuudes artikkeli on tutkimuksen epilogi, ja siinä palataan kauniin sielun tematiikkaan. Tutkimuksessa esitetään, että yllä mainitut filosofit turvautuvat estetiikkaan pyrkiessään laajentamaan etiikan alaa. Esteettisen kautta eettiseen tarkasteluun sisällytetään ihmiselämän ruumiillinen, ristiriitainen, sattumanvarainen ja traaginen aines. Schiller esimerkiksi etsii kauniin sielun käsitteen avulla moraalista ideaalia, joka toisin kuin kantilainen moraalifilosofia sisällyttäisi itseensä myös ihmisolemuksen aistimellisen osan. Murdoch ja Nussbaum puolestaan etsivät esteettisen kokemuksen kautta kaiken moraalisen tarkkaavaisuuden mallia. Murdochin mukaan esteettisille kokemuksille on ominaista tarkkaavaisuuden suuntautuminen poispäin tietoisuuden itsekkäistä tarpeista kohti muuten vaikeasti kohdattavaa todellisuutta. Nussbaum taas korostaa kaunokirjallisuuden kykyä paljastaa arvojen moninaisuus ja myös niiden väliset ristiriidat. Nussbaum samaistaa täysin moraaliset kokemukset ja kaunokirjallisuuden lukemiseen liittyvät kokemukset. Murdoch puolestaan näkee esteettisiä ja moraalisia kokemuksia yhdistävän samanlaisen pyyteettömän asenteen, mutta esteettisiin kokemuksiin liittyvä mielihyvä erottaa ne moraalisista kokemuksista. Tutkimuksessa korostetaan esteettisen kokemuksen merkitystä kaikelle eettisyydelle välttämättömän tarkkaavaisuuden mallina. Samalla kuitenkin painotetaan myös esteettisen ja eettisen kokemuksen välisen eron säilyttämisen tärkeyttä. Esteettiset kokemukset ovat tyypillisesti miellyttäviä, kun taas käytännön elämän moraalisissa konflikteissa samanlaisen mielihyvän tunteminen olisi varma merkki moraalisesta epäonnistumisesta. Tämä johtopäätös seuraa niin Murdochin kuin Nussbauminkin moraalifilosofisista lähtökohdista, joskaan viimeksi mainittu ei tähän seikkaan juuri kiinnitä huomiota. Esteettisen ja moraalisen kokemuksen välisen eron huomioonottaminen vahvistaa kuitenkin esteettisen kokemuksen moraalikasvatuksellista merkitystä puolustavaa argumenttia. Juuri esteettiselle kokemukselle ominainen mielihyvä tekee siitä hyvän käyntireitin moraaliin.

▼ O presente trabalho procura entender como Anthony Ashley Cooper (o Terceiro Conde de Shaftesbury) concebeu a noção de caráter moderno a partir da análise de alguns elementos de sua filosofia, a saber: a relação entre o gênero humano e a natureza, a formação da identidade individual e a de uma época, o vínculo entre a questão da escritura e a atividade filosófica. Cada um dos três capítulos de nosso estudo foi dedicado (respectivamente) a um desses assuntos. Tendo como base Os moralistas, a Investigação sobre a virtude e a Carta sobre o entusiasmo, o primeiro capítulo busca examinar o vínculo que Shaftesbury estabelece entre o homem e o sistema da natureza, ou seja: como o gênero humano se relaciona com o universo e qual é o seu papel no interior do mundo natural. A partir da idéia shaftesburiana de solilóquio (exposta no texto que leva o mesmo nome: Solilóquio ou conselho a um autor), o segundo capítulo procura compreender como o filósofo inglês pensa o liame entre o que ele mesmo denomina processo de personificação e o surgimento das artes, da filosofia e da identidade de uma época. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo visa mostrar que a questão da polidez e do aprimoramento do gosto não apenas foi um dos principais temas da obra do filósofo inglês, como também está intimamente ligada à sua concepção de filosofia.
The object of this thesis is the philosophy of Anthony Ashley Cooper, third earl of Shaftesbury, and more specifically the conception it presents of a modern character. Shaftesbury\'s understanding of modernity in philosophical terms is present in at least three of the main themes of his philosophy: the relation between mankind and nature, the formation of the individual character as a component of the character of the times, the bounds that tie philosophical reflection to the art of writing. The first chapter of the thesis examines Shaftesbury understanding of man\'s role in the natural world, or the relations between mankind as a species and nature as a system. The focus is on The moralists, a philosophical rhapsody, An inquiry concerning virtue or merit and A letter of enthusiasm. The second chapter deals with the text of Soliloquy, or advice to an author, in order to show how Shaftesbury conceives the process of personification as the precondition for the rising of the arts (including philosophy) which in turn are taken as the defining element of the character of the times. The third chapter shows that politeness and the refinement of taste, far from being mere motifs of fashion, are understood by Shaftesbury as philosophical topics of major importance. The focus here is on the texts of the Miscellaneous reflections and of Plastics.

eighteenth-century authors, in writing sequels to their own works,
raise important questions about narrative closure, ideal justice,
and the literary canon. It considers works by both traditionally
canonical writers (e.g., Daniel Defoe’s Farther Adventures and
Serious Reflections and Samuel Richardson’s Pamela II) and less
familiar authors (e.g., Sarah Fielding’s Familiar Letters and
Volume the Last and Frances Sheridan’s Conclusion of the Memoirs of
Miss Sidney Bidulph). Sequels demand a re-examination of how we
theorize novelistic form and closure (as found in such works as
Henry James’s The Art of Fiction and Frank Kermode’s The Sense of
an Ending). Sequels do not conform to classical (i.e.,
Aristotelian) theories of artistic closure, which treat an artistic
production as a complete work composed of “a beginning, a middle,
and an end" with a uniform effect on a spectator. Sequel-writers
often devote more attention to perspectives that may be excluded
from their earlier novels, consequently complicating earlier
assessments of a character’s moral worth or revealing the
impermanence of a "happy ending." Sequels are thus frequently at
odds with the dramatic convention of "poetic justice" and often
introduce a competing aesthetic, "poetic mercy." The presence of
the sequel calls for a reformulation of the literary canon: without
attentiveness to sequels, critics ignore the "story" as many
earlier audiences have read it and risk misrepresenting how authors
engage with their
subject matter. The literary sequel complicates
our understanding of the eighteenth-century novel and enables us to
engage with questions of justice and literary endings in a
different way.

Men, Manners, Opinions, Times, by Anthony Ashley
Cooper, Third Earl of Shaftesbury, marks an important dissent from
the general trend of early modern philosophy. This dissertation
argues that Shaftesbury's book undertakes a restoration of the
classical understanding of philosophy in contradistinction to the
understanding presented by the writings of Descartes, Hobbes,
Locke, and other modern thin0kers. According to Shaftesbury, modern
philosophy introduces a method of radical skepticism in order to
combat the moral and political effects of Christianity. This
methodical skepticism, however, turns out to be at least as
corrosive to moral and political life as the worldview it hopes to
undermine. Shaftesbury proposes as an alternative the restoration
of the classical critique of religion, which made possible the
coexistence of philosophy and religion and was accompanied by
political toleration of a variety of religious practices. To this
end Shaftesbury distinguishes a noble form of enthusiasm akin to
Platonic eros, which in his account is
the source of all higher human aspirations, including philosophy.
Shaftesbury's primary concern is to preserve and defend the
distinctly human things as they come to light in the writings of
the ancients. This concern informs both the substance and the
presentation of his defense of the noble and
beautiful.

▼ The thesis concerns the relationship between ethics and aesthetics in the context of questions relating to the good life and good character traits of human beings. The thesis consists of six original articles and an introduction. The introduction includes a general reconstruction of the thematic locus of the thesis, a discussion ofsome of its central concepts, the conclusions of the thesis, as well as brief summaries of the articles. The first article concerns the 1811th century notions of "moral beauty" and "beautiful soul", focusing especially on Lord Shaftesbury's and Friedrich Schiller's ideas. Articles 2-5 deal with Iris Murdoch's and Martha Nussbaum's virtue-ethical views. The sixth article is the epilogue of the thesis, and it returns to the theme of the beautiful soul. It is claimed that the above mentioned philosophers make use of aesthetics in their efforts to broaden the scope of ethics. The bodily, discordant, contingent, and tragic aspects of human life are included within ethics with the help of aesthetics. For example, Schiller is, with the concept of the beautiful soul, looking for a moral ideal that, unlike Kantian moral philosophy, would also take into account the sensuous side of the human being. Murdoch and Nussbaum in turn look to aesthetic experience for a model for all moral attention. According to Murdoch aesthetic experiences can make the consciousness turn away from its egoistic needs towards a reality which otherwise is difficult to face. Nussbaum emphasizes the way in which literature can reveal the plurality of values as well as their conflicting nature. Nussbaum takes encounters With literature to be moral experiences, whereas for Murdoch aesthetic and moral experiences are similar when it comes to the disinterested attitude characteristic of both, but different in that aesthetic experiences are accompanied by pleasure, where as pleasure is not an issue when it comes to morality. In the thesis, the relevance of aesthetic experience as a model for all moral attention is emphasized. I lowever, the importance of preserving the difference between aesthetic and moral experience is also stressed. Aesthetic experiences are typically pleasant, whereas in real life practical conflicts such an experience of pleasure would be a sign of moral failure. This is a conclusion which rises from the basic assumptions of both Murdoch's and Nussbaum's moral philosophy, even though the latter does not pay Much attention to this. Observing the difference nevertheless strengthens the argument for the relevance of aesthetic experiences to moral education. It is precisely the pleasure involved in aesthetic experience that makes it such a good path to morals.

▼ Cette recherche porte sur le rôle joué par la lecture de Montaigne dans la philosophie de Rousseau.Il convenait d’abord de repérer les traces de cette lecture et les différents témoignages qu’en donnent son œuvre publiée ainsi que ses manuscrits, d’établir les éditions dans lesquelles Rousseau lit les Essais et les perspectives dans lesquelles il le fait. Il fallait établir également les médiations qui ont joué un rôle dans la réception de Montaigne par Rousseau. Les Essais sont édités et lus au XVIIIe siècle selon des perspectives auxquelles il ne cesse de se confronter. Nombre d’auteurs du XVIIe siècle sur lesquels il s’appuie dialoguent avec Montaigne. L’étude de la relation que Rousseau entretient avec lui demande donc l’examen de toute une tradition philosophique qui s’appuie elle-même sur Montaigne.Cette dimension de l’héritage conduit à trianguler les références, implicites ou explicites, que Rousseau fait à Montaigne dans son œuvre philosophique. Il lui sert de point d’appui pour dialoguer avec Diderot traducteur de Shaftesbury et pour prendre parti, dès le premier Discours, en faveur de la religion naturelle. La lecture politique des Essais qu’il produit nourrit son opposition à toute forme de domination et lui permet de critiquer la position de Montesquieu sur le luxe. Cette lecture politique se développe dans le second Discours, pour dénoncer les effets de l’intérêt particulier, qui détruit le lien politique. Rousseau s’appuie encore sur les principes de La Boétie qu’il trouve dans les Essais pour penser la dépravation de l’homme en société. Le lien social ne demande pas de suivre une morale opposée à l’intérêt, mais de poursuivre l’intérêt universel qui nous lie aux autres hommes. Montaigne occupe aussi une place déterminante dans le dialogue que Rousseau entretient avec des auteurs comme Barbeyrac, Mandeville ou Locke.Cette thèse montre ainsi que la référence à Montaigne met en jeu les principes fondamentaux de la philosophie politique et morale de Rousseau.
The aim of this study is to analyze the role of Montaigne’s legacy in Rousseau’s philosophy.First, evidences and views of Rousseau’s reading of Montaigne have been examined in his published works and in his manuscripts. Editions in which Rousseau was reading Montaigne have also been identified.Then, mediations between Rousseau and Montaigne’s reception have been reviewed. Rousseau reads the Essais with the 18th century points of view. He relies on 17th century authors who judge Montaigne. Therefore, thanks to this philosophical tradition who deals with Montaigne, links between Montaigne and Rousseau are analysed.The implicit and explicit references to Montaigne in Rousseau’s work are triangulated. Rousseau quotes Montaigne to deal with Diderot, – translator of Shaftesbury, to defend natural religion as early as in his First Discourse on the Sciences and Arts.Rousseau has a political reading of the Essais. ▼ This thesis examines the career of David Hume as philosopher and essayist. David Hume is one of the first Men of Letters to make a living strictly through his publications. That fact points to a significant change in the idea of patronage. Instead of working for and catering to an aristocratic patron, Hume targeted a collective readership, a market.
That is not to say, however, that the philosopher "dumbed down" his thought. For, in fact, the essay format, with its conversational tone and easier accessibility, is actually perfectly suited for conveying Hume's particular philosophy of human nature. David Hume stressed the value of lived experience, and the human life experience is social at its core. In other words, to study humans in their social context is the best way to get at the fundamentals of human nature. The life of the community involves politics, economics, friendships, and personal relationships. For David Hume, these are the proper topics for philosophical inquiry.
Hume envisioned a modern readership that is characterized by its belief in the positive aspects of human sociability. In part, this is due to the dramatic changes taking place in British society due to commercialization. "Give and take" interaction was highly valued because that is how commerce works. That value seeped into other aspects of culture. David Hume believed there were some people within the culture of sociability, who though not learned in the sense of a trained philosopher such as himself, nevertheless wanted to think of their lives in a philosophical manner. In this study I hope to show the remarkable convergence of form, content, and context that emerges in David Hume's work as he addresses this audience.

▼ The Anglo-Dutch philosopher Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733) was among the most controversial figures writing in English in the eighteenth century. His satirical exploration of the nature of human sociability and economic prosperity infuriated his contemporary critics and deeply influenced the ideas of later Enlightenment philosophes. One of the most persistent questions about Mandeville's work concerns the sincerity of his declarations of Christian piety. Mandeville is commonly identified as a deist. This thesis explores the possibility that he was an atheist. The question is examined through an analysis of Mandeville’s major influences, most notably French Jansenism, Epicureanism, Scepticism, erudite libertinism, and Dutch republicanism. Key figures that Mandeville engaged with in his writings include Pierre Bayle, René Descartes,
Shaftesbury, Thomas Hobbes, Pierre Nicole, and Pierre Gassendi. In the process of discussing Mandeville’s putative atheism, the methodological problem of researching and identifying atheism in early-modern Europe is explored.

▼ In general, developments in English literature of the mid-eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century tend to place increasing attention on individual experience and greater variety in characters' aims, motives, and desires. Along with this tendency, the literature reflects alterations in the conceptual understanding of benevolence and sympathy that coincide with other significant changes in perspective, particularly a shift in the general understanding of the construction of the world and society. That is, works of the earlier period reflect perspectives and values of a society motivated by similar goals and desires, while those later works tend to portray characters at odds, in limited or more extreme fashion, with the social structures or larger social, political, and economic forces. The literature also reflects a changing awareness of the relationship between the self and history. Characters or the authors' personas first know themselves within a grand design of history with a universal ordering principle; later, they perceive themselves outside of history and submerging themselves in reenvisioned history or in self-history. The effect of the shifts in these larger perspectives is to undermine the essential understanding of sympathy as a shared, bonding, and redemptive experience that underlies all possibility for community. An examination of the varying notions of sympathy in works by Alexander Pope, Jane Austen, Ann Yearsley, Joanna Baillie, Ann Bannerman, Dorothy Wordsworth, and William Wordsworth from 1730 to 1816 reveals a variety of ways in which an understanding of sympathy changes: from a fully integrated and immediate virtue-based response within a functioning social structure – that is, sympathy as idealism – to a more self-defining reaction within the chaotic realities of individual imaginative experience.
Understanding the development of and shifts in the concept of sympathy begins, however, with a review of principal statements of four "moral sense" philosophers of the early to mid-eighteenth century –
Shaftesbury, Frances Hutcheson, David Hume, and Adam Smith. Subtle differences in the way they describe human response to the circumstances of another reflect an increasing awareness of distinctive rather than shared experience.

▼ At the dawn of England's Restoration, mercantilist minded men were filled with fresh ambitions to enrich the nation and themselves by way of new colonizing ventures. Settlement schemes were proposed for lands in far flung places ranging from Tangier, Bombay, and the Gambia to Saint Lucia, Saint Eustatius, New Jersey, and the Carolinas. The Carolina charter of 1663 represented England's first serious attempt to make advances into the American southeast. Its success was critical in the geopolitical battle between European nations to gain hegemony over the North American mainland. Historians have long agreed the region's eight Lords Proprietors planned from the very outset to develop a staples-producing plantation export economy, thereby establishing the most valuable of mercantile colonies. Yet, these metropolitan masters were far from a homogenous group. Each had his own motives and aspirations for entering into this charter agreement, Lord
Shaftesbury being the most inspired. This thesis explores his compulsions in the design and development of a new export market for this region, in the context of England's pre- and post-Restoration Atlantic economy. It suggests that far from a singular desire to establish a trade in agricultural-staples,
Shaftesbury was fully cognizant and planned to take full advantage of any and all opportunities the region afforded - most notably a trade with Native Americans for deerskins and furs. That he did so destabilizes the notion Carolina's `Indian trade' was born out of settler agency or a subversion of the proprietary dream. It thereby reorients current understandings of the development of Carolina's early economy and contributes to an appreciation of
Shaftesbury's lasting legacy in the region that, by the time of America's Revolution, became the wealthiest colony in all British North America.

▼ The aim of this dissertation is to rewrite the early history of modern aesthetic theory. The early eighteenth century is widely recognized as having been marked by innovations in thinking about art, beauty, and sense perception by a large group of well-known and lesser-known authors in many parts of Europe, among the most important of whom were Anthony Ashley Cooper, Third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671-1713) in England, Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) in Ireland and Scotland, and Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-62) in Brandenburg-Prussia. But no significant, historically-informed, comparative study of the emergence of aesthetic theory as a pan-European phenomenon has ever been undertaken. Rather, historians of aesthetic theory have long tended to summarize the eighteenth century as a series of preludes to the achievements of Immanuel Kant in his 1790 Critique of Judgment. Narratives of this type are not necessarily false, but they almost invariably obscure the contemporary significance of the treatises they regard as "aesthetic" and the purposes of those treatises' authors. Nor have they tended to take account of the theological and philosophical contexts crucial to explaining why aesthetic theories arose. As an alternative, I present the early history of aesthetic theory as part of the histories of moral philosophy, natural law, and theology, by analyzing discussions and controversies surrounding the work of Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, Baumgarten, and the little-known William Cleghorn (1719-54), a Scottish follower of Shaftesbury. I argue that their aesthetic theories should be seen as a multi-generational effort to solve a problem about what they called the "foundation of morality." They developed their aesthetic theories as challenges to the idea, espoused by their critics among contemporary natural law theorists and Lutheran and Presbyterian theologians, that the human will is naturally radically corrupt, and that moral behavior must therefore be understood as merely an expression of educated selfishness, and they sought to explain how cultivating the powers of the human soul associated with sensation, through the contemplation of beauty, including in well-made works of art and literature, is an essential part of moral education and allows naturally self-interested human beings to transcend their own self-interest. From an historical perspective, in other words, the origins of modern aesthetic theory should be sought in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century challenges to the Augustinian legacy of early modern Protestantism, in the long history of reactions to the natural law theories of Thomas Hobbes and Samuel Pufendorf (among others), and in the characteristically eighteenth-century search for a morally sound basis of a cohesive, flourishing society.

▼ Hobbes was Britain’s quintessential atheist at the dawn of the eighteenth century, and Hobbism (a widely recognized creed) was commonly used to identify and police theological and ecclesiological heterodoxy. A competing interpretation of Hobbism emerged over the first fifty years of the century. “Enlightened” Hobbism, like the traditional variant, took advantage of Hobbes’s notoriety, but now in a social and civil context. This dissertation explores an aspect of Hobbes’s reception from 1700 to 1760. The primary focus is on the works of Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Hutcheson, and Archibald Campbell. An analysis of these early British moralists reveals that they participated in a shared project of portraying Hobbes as a pessimistic egoist in moral terms. This was in sharp contrast with the majority of authors who highlighted Hobbes’s materialism, determinism, Erastianism, and moral conventionalism, as indicators of heresy and atheism. These two variants of Hobbism did not exist in isolation. “Enlightened” Hobbism was first articulated by Shaftesbury following accusations that he was an atheist in Hobbesian terms. Mandeville, Hutcheson, and Campbell subsequently had to navigate their own proximity to “Enlightened” Hobbism. Atheistic Hobbism was most suitable for a British context still obsessed with identifying theological truth. But as the priorities of civil society shifted and moralists challenged the theological basis of ethical discourse, British divines also had recourse to “Enlightened” Hobbism when justifying the necessity of the Church, God, and particular providence in the terms of civil prudence and utility. The primary goal of this dissertation is to explore the deployment of Hobbes and Hobbism in the moral discourse by these two groups: those who interpret morality through the lens of theology and the otherworldly, and those who view it as a fundamentally human endeavour. But this analysis also identifies a significant characteristic of the early British Enlightenment. As much as Enlightenment moralists forcefully distanced themselves from Hobbes, by rooting morality firmly in the human experience they contributed to the Hobbesian project of wresting authority from the Church and the otherworldly.

▼ In the last decade, interest in the causes and motives of Evil has experienced
a genuine renaissance. The scholarly fields which have probed the topic of
Evil are manifold, amongst them theology, mythology, philosophy, anthropology,
psychology, sociology, biology, political science, and not least literary
studies. The diverse expression of Evil has always been an integral part of
literature, whereby one narrative genre particularly changed its portrayal and
evaluation and was highly influential on successive generations: the English
gothic novel at the end of the 18th century. Not only did the gothic authors
devise new analytical methods and explanatory patterns for Evil, they also
found new ways of realising them in literary form. Because of their focus on
imagination and transcendence, the gothic authors were often accused of
escapism; however, they were in fact deeply rooted in literary traditions, and
some gothic novels both presented innovative concepts for the relation of Good
and Evil and released Evil from its traditional stigma of the unnatural and
perverted. My study focuses on one of the key characteristics of the gothic
novel, by which Evil is depicted as an evident part of human nature which
needs to be explained and psychologically explored, and the causes of
particularly strong outbreaks of evil behaviour are sought. This is examined
in the context of the changing idea of man in the 18th century. As a
representative example, I contrast the altruistic views of Anthony Ashley
Cooper, Third Earl of Shaftsbury, and the egoistic notions of Bernard
Mandeville. The tension between these contrary world views with respect to
virtue and morals is the immediate basis for all explanations gothic novels
have to offer for the existence of Evil in human beings, especially in the
gothic villain, the central character of all gothic novels. In the main
section of the study, these explanations are investigated by examining eleven
characters, of which six are male and five female, from eight novels. The
cross-gender approach is particularly interesting, as the study of literature
has previously often marginalised female villains. Three categories help to
clarify the main tendencies of the explanatory patterns of Evil: the natural
(sociological), supernatural (metaphysical), and unspecified (psychological).
However, the individuality of every single character is always taken into
account. Following these historical case studies, the function of the gothic
novel as a catalyst for driving the development of the English novel is
examined by drawing attention to the continuity of gothic themes in the 19th
and 20th centuries.

▼ This study explores the rediscovery and development of a tradition of Ciceronian academic scepticism in British philosophy between c.1660-c.1760. It considers this tradition alongside two others, recently recovered by scholars, which were recognised by contemporaries to offer opposing visions of man, God and the origins of society: the Augustinian-Epicurean, and the neo-Stoic. It presents John Locke, Conyers Middleton and David Hume as the leading figures in the revival of the tradition of academic scepticism. It considers their works in relation to those of Anthony Ashley Cooper, third earl of Shaftesbury, and Bernard Mandeville, whose writings refashioned respectively the neo-Stoic and Augustinian-Epicurean traditions in influential ways. These five individuals explicitly identified themselves with these late Hellenistic philosophical traditions, and sought to contest and redefine conventional estimations of their meaning and significance. This thesis recovers this debate, which illuminates our understanding of the development of the ‘science of man’ in Britain. Cicero was a central figure in Locke’s attempt to explain, against Hobbes, the origins of society and moral consensus independent of political authority. Locke was a theorist of societies, religious and civil. He provided a naturalistic explanation of moral motivation and sociability which, drawing heavily from Cicero, emphasised the importance of men’s concern for the opinions of others. Locke set this within a Christian divine teleology. It was Locke’s theologically-grounded treatment of moral obligation, and his attack on Stoic moral philosophy, that led to Shaftesbury’s attempt to vindicate Stoicism. This was met by Mandeville’s profoundly Epicurean response. The consequences of the neo-Epicurean and neo-Stoic traditions for Christianity were explored by Middleton, who argued that only academic scepticism was consistent with Christian belief. Hume explored the relationship between morality and religion with continual reference to Cicero. He did so, in contrast to Locke or Middleton, to banish entirely moral theology from philosophy.
