▼ A flexible data base of messages through a flexible range of media to a flexible target population. This is a succinct image of YMCA SHR and KARHP messages through the appropriate peer education communication method to their respective audiences. This applied research is aiming at empowering peer educators of both programmes by shaping and rendering more effective their communication methods. By observations, on-the-job-trainings and formal empowering ventures, the methodology utilised is active participation. The report reviews some of the SHR and peer education literature and purposely defines both terms. It reflects the researcher's observations on the field and points out some of the weaknesses and strengths of the two SRH programmes. As it briefly profiles them, it also comparatively tabulates their similarities and dissimilarities. The study appreciates, improves, corrects and introduces some communication methods in both programmes. This exercise is tried at researcher-peer educators, peer educators' internal exchange visits, peer educators' external exchange visits and peer educators joint workshop levels. The research report also records some of the direct feedbacks as reactions/responses from individual peer educators, peer educators Dody and from the co-ordination of both SKH programmes. Lastly, it makes some recommendations and suggestions for the peer education methods to enjoy a conducive environment and be continuously bettered.

▼ Adolescence is a crucial development stage where both biological and psychological changes take place. Among the various transformations and developments, the discovery of sexuality and intimacy has an important role, especially from sixteen to nineteen years old. The construction of sexual identity is a significant bio-psycho-social development(Kar, 2015), however in Italy almost half of the teenagers have experienced a form of violence from their partners during High School raging from insults to physical aggression (Romito, 2013). The literature agrees that experiencing rejection is a common trigger of aggression with significant repercussions of mental and physical health. Therefore to understand better the phenomenon, its causes and consequences, a combination of desk research and field research was carried out. The results indicated that rejection is lived on an ego level touching the pride of people and therefore it is considered a taboo with strong effects on different levels of society. Based on this analysis, to improve the current situation, it was chosen to focus on the community level by triggering open conversation about rejection. All these insights gained from the analysis were presented to a team of experts and teenagers. Their feedback was helpful to understand the fundamental characteristics that the final design should have to trigger meaningful conversation around the experience of rejection. To discuss how media portraits rejectionFEIC is introduced. #FEIC is a service that provides teenagers with a showcase of media narratives of rejection and interactive activities. The showcase aims to get the teenagers familiar with the idea of media narratives, while the goal of the activities is to make them experiment with them. In the current development, one activity is designed and deepened to use media narratives as a trigger to talk about how society deals with rejection and how that affects teenagers and their thinking. Different variations of the activity were tested to understand what type of interactions were triggering more discussions. Moreover, to evaluate the overall experience and design features, the full service was presented to the experts through in-depth interviews. The feedback gained demonstrated that the use of media is a successful way to trigger meaningful discussion around rejection. The dialogue generated from the #FEIC activity was defined as “different” from what teenagers were used to discussing, “stimulating”, and “useful” to understand better the conditioning behind their judgment.

▼ ABSTRACT
Introduction: More than one billion people in the world are between the ages of 15 and 24, and
most live in developing countries. Unsafe sex is a major threat to the
health and survival of
millions of adolescents. Each year, one in 20 adolescents worldwide contracts an STI including
HIV/AIDS.
Objectives: to assess premarital
sexual practices and perception of
sexual and
reproductive
health risks associated with it among in-school youths of Shoa Robit town, North Shoa Zone,
Amhara National Regional state, Ethiopia
Method of the study: An Institution based cross-sectional study design including both
quantitative and qualitative surveys was used. To determine number of students to be included in
the study, a single population proportion formula was used based on the assumption of 19%
prevalence (p) in school youth premarital sex by using design effect 1.5 and at 95% confidence
interval with marginal error of 4%, and finally the sample size would be 540.
Result: Of the calculated sample size, total of 508 respondents completely filled to the
questionnaire in the study with response rate of 94.1%. Among a total participants 274(53.9%)
were females and 234 (46.1%) were males. Among the study subjects, 224 (44.1%) of them
reported that they had premarital
sexual intercourse at the time of the survey, of which 106
(47.3%) for males and 118(52.7%) for females. The mean age of
sexual intercourse was 17.5±
1.5 years for males and 16.8± 1.4 years for females. Youths who come from urban were more
likely experience sex than youths from rural (AOR=3.432; 95%CI=1.971, 5.965). Youths who
drink alcohol, smoke cigarette, chew chat and watch pornographic films were more likely
experience sex than who did not (AOR= 2.538; 95%CI=( (1.378-4.674), (AOR= 6.715;
95%CI=1.422,31.711), ( AOR= 5.946; 95%CI=0.998, 35.445) and (AOR= 5.119; 95%CI=2.983,
8.784) respectively.
Conclusion and recommendation: In general, from this particular study, we can conclude that
the level of
sexual and
reproductive health risk perception towards STI including HIV/AIDS,
among in school youths is generally minimal. Consequently, risky
sexual practices are widely
prevalent. School based information, education and behavioral change communication
intervention including life skill training should be given.

▼ The purpose of the study was to explore and describe young people’s perceptions of access to
sexual and
reproductive health (SRH) services in Swaziland. The study provided insights into the SRH services currently available to the young people of Swaziland and reveals the opportunities that can be used to improve accessibility and utilisation of the current
reproductive health services. The findings will inform policy-making and appropriate future interventions for young people’s
sexual and
reproductive needs and services.
Data were collected through a descriptive exploratory study design. Colaizzi’s seven steps of data analysis were used. The study provides ample evidence that young people face
sexual health risks that justify their need to access and utilise SRH services. The findings revealed that access to service is an important but complex element of quality care, as it determines whether a client gets to the service provider.

▼ Early
sexual debut whether voluntary or coerced increases exposure to high risk sex which leads to unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections including HIV and
reproductive heal th problems during adolescence. This study aim s to examine the risk factors for age of
sexual debut, either voluntary or coerced among Black African female adolescents from the Birth to Twenty cohort study in Soweto, South Africa . Part A is the study protocol which outlines the rationale for conducting this study , study aim, research methodology, analysis plan and ethical considerations. Part B forms the literature review which gives a summary of the existing literature and provides context for the dissertation. The objectives of the literature review were to identify published literature on determinants of either voluntary or coerced
sexual debut in adolescents and identify gaps for further research. Part C is the manuscript presenting the results and discussion on the implications of key findings. The results showed that there are many Black African female adolescents who are engaging in early
sexual debut and there is prevalenc e of coerced
sexual debut among adolescents of similar age. Socio-economic status and maternal education were found to be significantly associated with coerced
sexual debut. There is a need for interventions to delay
sexual debut among young female adolescents from low socio-economic backgrounds and lower maternal education.

▼ Over the last few decades, there has been little evidence of young people accessing information necessary for Sexual Reproductive Health decision-making. Adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) has increasingly been on national health agendas of many countries, including Zambia. One of the major causes of these agendas is the concern against early childbearing. Access to youth-friendly health services such as contraceptives is vital for ensuring the well-being of adolescents. This study would help determine the role of contraception in preventing early childbearing among young people aged 16-19 years who were sexually active.
The study was a cross-sectional sample survey covering 369 urban secondary school adolescent female pupils (Grades 10-12) aged 16-19 years and some members of the urban community in Mazabuka. It employed a mixed-method approach in which both quantitative and qualitative techniques were used. These approaches were treated independently at data collection and analysis. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to determine the level of modern contraceptive use among adolescent female pupils as an outcome variable. Focus group discussions (FGDs) with purposively selected parents and interviews with purposively selected key informants (school guidance teachers and SRH personnel) provided data on community perceptions on adolescent contraceptive use.
The results show that the prevalence of modern contraceptive use among adolescent females stood at 17% (65/369) whereas the prevalence of adolescents who regularly indulged in sexual activity was (26.8%). Frequency of sex (OR 4.41, 95% CI 2.9, 6.6, p-value <0.001), visits to a health facility (OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.2, 5.9, p-value 0.019) and values and belief systems (OR .18, 95%CI .1, .37, p-value <0.001) are the major factors that had significant association with contraceptive use. Secretiveness and fear of social stigma were cited as reasons for adolescents not accessing modern contraceptive services. Findings also showed existence of myths and beliefs held by both the adolescents and the community, relating to lack of information on some effects of modern contraceptive use and access to relevant SRH services. Adolescents largely did not visit health facilities for alternative services. Various community values relating to cultural and religious backgrounds exerted an influence on decision-making among adolescents regarding the use of modern contraceptives. Socio-cultural values played an important role in relation to adolescent response to contraceptive use.
Adolescent access to SRH services and the decision whether or not to use them is primarily influenced by other people from the socio-cultural environment of Mazabuka. This study demonstrated the need for comprehensive SRH services accessible to adolescents in Mazabuka district. It also suggested the need for sensitisation of communities for change of mindsets for adolescents to be better equipped with contraceptive information and knowledge in order to enhance decision-making that promotes…

▼ Background: Globally, adolescent period is a critical developmental phase where many preventable
health problems are acquired. However, studies have shown that parent adolescent
sexual communication is protective against risky
sexual behaviours. Nationally, parent adolescent communication on
Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) rarely occurs. Furthermore, anecdotal evidence along the coastal towns/suburbs shows a high prevalence of risky
sexual behaviours and its associated consequences.
Objectives: This study aimed at exploring the patterns of parent-adolescent
sexual communication in the Ashiedu-Keteke sub-metro of Accra.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted within the Ashiedu-Keteke sub metro. Data were qualitatively collected using Focus Group Discussions with adolescents, and In-depth Interviews with parents. Convenience sampling method was used to select participants for the study. All interviews were audio-recorded and were transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed thematically after the transcripts were read several times to identify appropriate themes per the objectives.
Results: The study found that parents communicated more with adolescents on general issues but less on SRH. Also, the media as well as unacceptable events that occurred in the community served as triggers for initiating communication. Parents reportedly lacked fine details of SRH issues to equip the adolescents in making the right decisions and choices. The study identified teenage pregnancy, abortion, rape, lesbianism/ homosexuality as the most commonly discussed
sexual health topics among parents and their adolescents. However, adolescents‘ reports revealed that they lacked detailed information about these topics and how to prevent the occurrence of some of these risky
sexual behaviours. Additionally, the study found that parents feared that their children may become promiscuous if they discussed sexuality issues with them; while the adolescents were also concerned that parents may brand them as spoilt if they asked questions about sexuality.
Conclusion: Parent-adolescent
sexual communication has not been effectively handled in the Ashiedu-Keteke sub metro even though it is one of the best ways of curbing incidence of risky
sexual behaviour. Additionally, lack of trust prevents adolescents from seeking out parents to discuss SRH issues.

▼ The present study was conducted to assess parent adolescent communication on SRH issues among Ayer Tena preparatory school students, Addis Ababa. Mixed methods research design was used. A total of 393 (female =214 and male =179) adolescent students were selected using systematic sampling technique. A pre-tested, structured and self-administered questionnaire was used for the quantitative study, and an interview guideline was used to generate data from interviewee adolescents and pertinent professionals. To analyze the quantitative data of 378 (female= 208 and male= 170), Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 was used. In addition to descriptive statistics (univariate analysis), further statistical analysis such as Crude Odds Ratio and Adjusted Odds Ratio were employed to see the associations of single independent variable and dependent variable, and multiple independent variables and dependent variable respectively. 95 % confidence interval (CI) and 5% margin of error was considered during the statistical analysis. The qualitative data was analyzed thematically and integrated with the quantitative based on the study questions. Findings showed that 287 (75.9%) adolescents recognized the importance of SRH issues communication with their parents. 34.5% adolescents ever had discussed on at least two topics of SRH issues. Communication was mostly based on parent child sex similarity (mother-daughter and father-son). The study also found that there is a statistically significant relationship between having positive attitude towards parent-adolescent communication on SRH issues, having informed about SRH issues and having literate parents, and parent-adolescent communication on SRH issues. Conclusion was made and the implication was discussed.

▼ The purpose of the study was to investigate how adolescents get socialized about sexuality; the sources, areas/contents of
sexual information/ and socialization and to identify whether there was gender difference in
sexual socialization of adolescents. In addition, the study also aimed at examining the relationship between perceived adolescents
sexual socialization and RH knowledge. The study design is a descriptive survey where a situation and the prevalent issues under the problem of the study were described. Data were collected from 259 adolescents (150 female and 109 male) using self-reported questionnaire. To select the participants stratified random sampling technique was employed. The finding indicated that with respect to both adolescents’ preferred and current source of
sexual information, peer groups were reported as the first source. Parents, particularly mothers were reported as the second preferred source while they were the least with respect to the current sources of
sexual information for adolescents. The result of the study also indicated that adolescents were found informed/and socialized with specified areas of SRH issues such as about contraceptives; condoms and birth control, unplanned pregnancy, STIs and STDs including HIV/AIDS. The result of independent samples t-test revealed that there was a significant difference between female and male adolescents in parental
sexual communication, perceived parent and peer approval of
sexual behavior. Finally, the study indicated that RH knowledge has weak significant positive relationship with peer
sexual communication, media SS, perceived parent and peer approval of
sexual behavior. To conclude, peer groups were the main source of
sexual information for adolescents followed by media and adolescents were found socialized with specified areas of
sexual issues. The finding suggests a need to promote parents awareness about the importance of open parent-adolescent
sexual communication in the effort to promote adolescents
reproductive health and
sexual behavior. In addition, there is a need for future in-depth study of the issue. Key words: Adolescent, Sexuality,

▼ Purpose: The majority of HIV-infected individuals live in sub-Saharan Africa and youth account for the largest sub-population with new infections. Because the highest proportion of new infections is among girls, research is needed to understand the risk factors and context by gender. An analysis of peer and parental approval perceptions can elucidate the gender differences in this large, susceptible population in risky behaviors, including histories of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. Methods: Using the cross-sectional Kampala Youth Survey (2014) based in Kampala, Uganda (n=1,134), descriptive statistics were used to explore gender differences in demographics, peer and parental influence variables, and
sexual actions.
Sexual risk behaviors examined include
sexual activity,
sexual debut age, self-reported HIV and STI rates, and condom usage. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regressions were conducted to determine the odds of
sexual risk behaviors based on peer and parental influence variables and gender. This analysis also sought to identify if gender moderated the association between peer and parental influence variables with
sexual risk behaviors. Results: There is a statistical difference between genders in a self-reported history of HIV diagnosis (p

▼ International agreements dating back to the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action in 1994, and the Beijing Declaration Platform for Action, 1995, have recognized the right to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights (SRHR), enabling women to make their own decisions over their bodies. These agreements committed states to provide universal access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, including information and education, access to modern contraceptives, and safe abortion where legal.
However, changes in the international political environment are demonstrating challenges in the protection of this agreed language on SRHR at the UN, having an impact on women’s access to SRH services globally. The broadening of the Mexico City Policy attempting to censor the language on SRHR, both domestically and internationally, as well as systematic lobbying of governments at the UN by conservative groups, is having a direct impact on the current global SRHR agenda setting.
The aim of this study was to determine whether the efforts of the conservative opposition who seek to roll back the language on SRHR has been replicated in the UN outcome documents and resolutions between 2014 and 2019, before and after the latest reimplementation of the Mexico City Policy.
This study presents the first empirical research on the disappearance of the language over time on the basis of a document review. The Health Policy Framework by Walt and Gilson (1994) allowed for an overview of the context in which the lobbying is taking place, map who the actors are that oppose SRHR, describe the process, and analyze the content of the documents. The results demonstrated a disappearance of the language on abortion in the CSW outcome documents, and a changing of the language on comprehensive sexuality education in the CSW and UN resolutions, which saw the removal of sexuality and placed an increased emphasis on the role of families. Furthermore, there was an inability of some states to accept sexual and reproductive health at all.
This study has shown that the original agreed language from the ICPD and Beijing commitments are not safe from relentless opposition, and suggests that, going forward, funding for SRHR may need to look at more sustainable sources which are not subject to the international political environment.

▼ Background Information:
Sexual and
reproductive health needs of young people remain
poorly understood and met, with little access to appropriate and acceptable
sexual and
reproductive health services unlike that of married young people. In Ethiopia information on
attitudes and practices of community-based
reproductive health agents towards
sexual and
reproductive health service provision to young unmarried people is very limited.
Objective: To assess the attitudes and practices of community-based

agents towards
sexual and
reproductive health service provision to unmarried young people.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in five woredas of North Wollo Zone,
Amhara National Regional State, Northeast Ethiopia from December 2006 to January 2007. Data
were drawn from 303 actively functioning community-based
reproductive health agents.
Results: A total of 303, 78.5% males and 21.5% females, actively functioning communitybased
reproductive health agents were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Out of 285

▼ This dissertation study utilized the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to analyze empirical relationships between social determinants of health and adolescent pregnancy. Although rates of adolescent pregnancy are at an all-time low in the United States, disparities persist. Examining relationships between the social determinants of health and adolescent pregnancy provides support for funding and interventions that expand on the current focus of individual and interpersonal level factors. Based on the Healthy People 2020 Social Determinants of Health Framework, proxy measures for social determinants of health were identified within the Add Health study and analyzed in relationship with adolescent pregnancy. Results indicated that six of 17 measures of social determinants of health had an empirical relationship with adolescent pregnancy. These measures included the following: feeling close to others at school, receipt of high school diploma, enrollment in higher education, participation in volunteering or community service, litter or trash in the neighborhood environment, and living in a two parent home. The results of this study can inform future research, allocation of funds and interventions based on social determinants of health that show an association with adolescent pregnancy.

▼ Adolescence is a crucial period in human development. Knowledge and awareness about when to have children, when to have sex, and use of contraceptives impacts the chances of teenage pregnancy and risk of sexually transmitted diseases. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors related to age of
sexual debut, teenage pregnancy, and use of contraceptives in the Gambia. This study also compares the data with 2014 survey research conducted in the Gambia. The total study population were 50 adolescents aged 13-21 years from Bafuluto and surrounding communities in the Gambia. Among 50 respondents, 40 were females and 10 were males, 58% of whom (29) report that they have had
sexual intercourse in their life. Seven (24%) reported
sexual debut between 13-15 years of age. Fifteen (52%) reported first sex between 16-18 years of age. Eight (28%) respondents reported to have used contraceptives during their first
sexual intercourse. Nine (31%) reported to have been pregnant in their lives. When comparing data from 2018 with data from a similar study conducted in 2014, the percentage of adolescents who had sex increased by 25%. In the 2014 research, none of the respondents reported having an abortion but, 3 (10%) of the respondents reported having an abortion in the 2018 study. The prevalence of condom uses during last intercourse increased from 2014, 60 (54%) to 50 (63%) in 2018. With regard to the types of contraceptives used, condoms were most frequently reported at 50% of those who reported having sex (29) in 2018, and 11% in 2014. Only ten out of 50 respondents had attended the
sexual education program conducted in 2015-16. This study is one of the few of its kind to report on adolescent
sexual behavior in West Africa. While there are limitations, including small sample size and agecohort comparisons with the 2014 study, trends noted are of concern. Due to the differences in age cohort, many of the adolescents in this study may not have attended the 2015-16
reproductive health education intervention, thus limiting comparability and conclusions about the program.

▼ This thesis explores youth sexuality, sexual risk and sexual resilience among young iTaukei women attending university in Fiji. An adapted ecological model is developed to enable the theorisation of sexual risk and sexual resilience in these women’s lives. The thesis illustrates how hierarchies of sexual risk are produced through the interaction of local cultures, sex and gender ideologies, global processes, complex sexual subjectivities and sexual desires. It demonstrates the need for a multi-level analysis to inform effective STI/HIV prevention strategies.

▼ This thesis investigates the underlying factors behind sexual risk-taking and non-risk-taking behavior with regard to Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) among adolescents in Lusaka, Zambia. The Qualitative Approach was used for data collection and analysis and using the theory of Social Construction, the author explains how different contexts and aspects in the Zambian Society, that is Traditional, Socio-economic, Political, etc., influence the sexuality or sexual behavior of young people in Zambia. Hermeneutics was used to interpret the meanings in the texts/transcripts acquired through data collection and from the author’s knowledge and understanding of the Zambian historical and cultural contexts within which the participants of the research were constructed. Max Weber’s Ideal Type concept was also used to explain that each young individual’s sexual behavior is uniquely constructed by societal aspects. It explains how that the discourses of these different aspects of society impact on young people individually causing them to be either Sexually Risk-taking or Non Sexually Risk-taking. Either tendency depends on whether the societal aspect that has most the dominating influence on a given individual's life is a Power factor (causing them to rationally think their way into Non Sexually Risk-taking behavior) or a Risk factor(causing them to rationally think their way into Sexually Risk-taking behavior). The author of this thesis introduces a new Model for Social Construction of Adolescent Sexuality with regard to Risk-taking. She uses it to explain how it is either power factors or risk factors that can have a greater impact on an individual's thinking, causing them to have either sexual risk-taking or non-sexual risk-taking behavior. The author concludes that the extent to which unsafe sex among the Zambian adolescents constitutes a product of interacting and/or main discourses in relation to mainly Traditional aspect risk factors, varies from person to person depending on the strength of given risk factors over any power factors that may be at play in an individual's life.

▼ Background
One of the key concerns globally is the
sexual and
reproductive health of adolescents, especially in developing countries and regions like sub-Saharan Africa, where the largest number of deaths is due to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), (World
Health Organization, 2014). According to the WHO, 2014, an estimated 16 million girls between the ages of 15 and 19 years give birth every year, and most of these girls come from low- and middle-income countries.
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to explore adolescents’ perceptions regarding youth-friendly
sexual and
reproductive health services in a selected community
health centre (CHC) in uMgungundlovu District in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.
Methodology
A quantitative research design, utilising a survey, was chosen for the study. A non-probability convenient technique was selected. A sample of 169 adolescents was included in the study using the convenience sampling method.
Findings
The study revealed that healthcare staff generally has positive attitudes towards rendering
sexual and
reproductive health services to adolescents in the selected CHC.
Recommendations
The recommendations arising from this research, therefore, focus on nursing practice and the formulation of policies for addressing adolescents’ perceptions regarding youth-friendly
sexual and
reproductive health services, and the involvement of youths in its delivery if one is already in place. Nursing education regarding the inclusion of adolescent youth-friendly
sexual and
reproductive health in the curriculum, as well as further which will focus more on male adolescents’ perceptions.

▼ Background: Adolescents constitute the majority of the world’s population and are faced with sexual
and reproductive health (SRH) issues. The inability of young people to access /SRH services is
attributed to challenges such as privacy and unconducive environment even at facilities that target them.
As a result, the Ghana Health Service, the primary implementer of health activities in the country
introduced the You Must Know (YMK) mobile application to provide young people privacy and
confidentiality they need in accessing SRH services as well as address the issue of service availability.
Objective: This study sought to determine the level of knowledge of SRH and use of services by YMK
users and non- users. It also assessed factors influencing the use of YMK application among young
people.
Method: An unmatched case-control study was conducted in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. A
mobile-based questionnaire was used to recruit 138 YMK users and 276 non-users of YMK to
participate in the study. A p-value <0.05 was used to determine the statistical significance of the
association between independent and dependent variables. Frequencies, crosstabs, chi-square test, and
logistic regression were used to analyze the data. Odds ratios and a 95% confidence interval were used
to determine the strength of the association.
Results: High knowledge level on SRH issues was found among both users and non-users of YMK
mobile application (93.5% and 94.6%) respectively (p>0.05). Young people who were Muslims were
81% less likely to have good knowledge on SRH issues compared to Christians [AOR=0.18, CI: 0.07-
-0.47, p<0.001]. Findings also revealed that YMK users were more likely to use SRH services
[AOR=17, CI: 9.52-29.11, p<0.001.
Conclusion: There is no significant difference in knowledge among users and non-users of the YMK
mobile application. However, YMK users were more likely to use SRH services as compared to non- YMK users. Users perceived the mobile application to be readily available, shorter waiting time in
accessing SRH services. They described the YMK, as a simple, flexible, well-organized system which
protects private information and provides personal space

Adolescents' Sources Of Health Information And Sibling Communication In Ghana: A Mixed Methods Analysis.

▼ Adolescence is an important developmental stage usually characterized by physical changes, psychosocial changes, and a tendency towards new experiences, such as
sexual activity. It is generally understood that adolescents learn about
sexual and
reproductive health from multiple sources, including parents, friends, and the media. Less studied - particularly in non-Western and/or African contexts - is the role of siblings in shaping adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. This study is a secondary analysis of data collected from focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews (IDIs), and a nationally representative survey among 12-19 year-olds in Ghana as part of a four-country project assessing the
sexual and
reproductive health of adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. Through a mixed methods approach, the present study examines similarities and differences in the
health information that adolescents receive from various sources. Using social learning theory and differentiation theory as frameworks, the study hones in on the contributions of siblings. Analyses of all three data sources produce complementary results. FGDs and IDIs show clear similarities in the timing and nature of
sexual and
reproductive health information that adolescents receive from other sources and from siblings, especially regarding
sexual abstinence and preventing early pregnancy. The FGDs and IDIs also provide evidence of social and observational learning, showing that siblings serve as agents of socialization, advisors, confidants, and role models. Findings from the survey and IDIs highlight the preponderance of communication and interactions between same-gender sibling dyads. Additionally, multivariate analyses show that older adolescents (15-19 years) are twice as likely to communicate with a sibling about sex-related matters as younger ones and that the likelihood is even higher among male adolescents who have at least one older sibling. Adolescents from rural areas, however, were significantly less likely to communicate with a sibling. Besides establishing the need to consider siblings as an important target group in adolescent and family-centered policy and programmatic interventions in Ghana, results from this study emphasize the duality of adolescents as siblings who exchange
sexual and
reproductive health information and who can potentially impact the transition to adulthood.

▼ Background: HIV is a major and global public health issue. In 2014, approximately 17.4million women were living with HIV. Regarding HIV, there are socially acquiredprejudices that contributes to stigmatize those living with the infection. Women livingwith HIV are an extra vulnerable group in society, which can negatively affect theirhealth. Aim: To study the experiences of sexual and reproductive health in women livingwith an HIV diagnosis in the Western world. Method: A literature-based study. Themethod used for this study was based on qualitative research, which contribute a deeperunderstanding for a phenomenon. Eight articles were analyzed and resulted in three mainthemes and seven subthemes. Results: The results are presented under three main themes; To face new challenges, To be treated differently and Being emotionally affected. To facenew challenges describe women's experience in managing their sexuality and the needfor information. To be treated differently describes women's experience of beingstigmatized in society and in health care. Being emotionally affected describes howwomen experienced shame and fear, which contributed to the fact that women did notseek care during pregnancy. Conclusion: Women living with an HIV diagnosis are inneed of information as well as emotional and instrumental support. This need can beacknowledged when the nurse takes on the responsibility for nursing and applies personcentered care.
▼ In a study we conducted with Ontarian women about their abortion experiences (OAS), one third of participants expressed a desire for post-abortion support. Yet, there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that organizations offering these services are using judgmental frameworks. In order to rigorously investigate this, we explored what post-abortion support services are offered across the province of Ontario. This multi-methods study included an analysis of OAS data, creating a directory of post-abortion support services in the province, conducting an analysis of how these services represent themselves online, and carrying out mystery client interactions. We found that the majority of organizations offering post-abortion support services in Ontario are crisis pregnancy centers. The services offered at these organizations are built upon frameworks that are both shaming and stigmatizing of abortion experiences. Efforts to increase the online visibility and overall accessibility of non-judgmental, medically accurate post-abortion support services in Ontario appear warranted.

▼ The peri-coital contraceptive pill is a potential method for pregnancy prevention that could be taken in a period before or after unprotected sexual intercourse. However, uptake of a new contraceptive method relies on accessible terminology and frameworks with which to discuss it. I conducted seven focus group discussions across Canada to understand how women talk about different reproductive health technologies, explore the ways these discourses influence language and frameworks women use to talk about peri-coital contraceptives, and identify perceptions of and concerns about this potential method. Women thought the peri-coital contraceptive pill would be a valuable addition to current contraception. They disliked the name ”peri-coital”; although some participants created more resonant names related to unique aspects of this method, many found it challenging to clearly discuss the method with existing language for contraception. Concerted effort to develop terminology that is clearer may help facilitate the eventual introduction of this new contraceptive method in Canada and beyond.

Expanding Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Care in Alternative Primary Care Settings.

▼ The need to expand access to and availability of quality and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care (SRH) to help close the gaps in existing health disparities and health inequities in the United States is a pressing public health concern. The emergence of alternative primary care settings (i.e., retail-based clinics [RBCs]) has recently proven to be an effective model for the delivery of acute care in lieu of more traditional medical services. Indeed, RBCs could be an agent for greater SRH care access with the integration of more services; however, barriers exist that inhibit this maximization of care. Providers play a central role in the utilization of SRH in RBCs, whether through their intent to recommend or biases about RBCs. Provider recommendation is a strong indicator for patient compliance. However, little is known about how providers’ attitudes and beliefs influence the uptake of SRH in RBCs. This cross-sectional study collected survey data from a large sample of 341 advanced practice clinicians (APC) to (1) understand the benefits and barriers of SRH integration in RBCs; and (2) identify the relationship between the attitudes of APCs regarding RBCs and their influence on barriers and benefits of SRH integration into RBCs. Items were adapted from existing valid and reliable measures. Survey data were analyzed primarily using descriptive statistics. Comparative analysis between demographic factors and identifier variables that led to several themes: a majority of APCs believe the integration of SRH into RBCs would expand access to and availability of quality and comprehensive SRH care for prevention and intervention; hesitancy to recommend SRH services is chiefly founded in lack of confidence in quality assurance, professional training and quality of services offered; overall APCs had a generally positive attitude towards the integration of SRH in RBCs but attitudes differed among the types of SRH services offered at RBCs.
These findings provide insight for the identification of barriers and benefits in the integration of SRH in RBCs. This may create opportunities to address barriers for the expansion of prevention and intervention services among women while capitalizing on benefits to advance awareness, education and access to care.

▼ Homeless young women become pregnant at exceptionally high rates, and such pregnancies often pose serious emotional, social, and physical
health concerns. Perhaps surprisingly, many homeless youth intentionally seek to become pregnant or involved in pregnancy, as pregnancy and parenthood are viewed as conduits toward accessing social services and meaningful social connections to others that this group often lacks. However, most prevention efforts focus solely on young females' pregnancy attitudes and behaviors at the individual level. Such approaches fail to acknowledge contextual factors, such as desired pregnancy and pregnancy ambivalence, the influence of youths' social networks and perceived social norms regarding pregnancy, youths' desire for social connection, and their dire needs for tangible resources, each of which may influence youths'
reproductive and
sexual health behaviors. This study thus drew upon theoretical perspectives pertaining to social networks, social norms, and social support, to examine how youths' broader ecological contexts may play a role in shaping homeless youths' pregnancy attitudes and, subsequently, their engagement in unprotected (condomless) vaginal sex. Using a sequential mixed methods design, this study first quantitatively examined social network data previously collected from homeless youth in Los Angeles (
N = 1,046). A series of multivariate logistic regressions assessed the association between social norms regarding pregnancy, perceived by youth as conveyed by members of their social networks, and homeless youths' pro-pregnancy attitude endorsements. A model also examined how specific forms of social support, provided by youths' social network members, were associated with homeless youths' pro-pregnancy attitude endorsements. A final quantitative model then analyzed the association between homeless youths' endorsements of pro-pregnancy attitudes and their engagement in unprotected vaginal sex, a known risk factor for not only pregnancy, but also HIV/STI acquisition and transmission. The project then built upon findings from the quantitative study strand to develop an original qualitative interview guide. In-depth, individual interviews were conducted with homeless youth (
N = 30) staying at a youth-serving shelter in Denver, Colorado. This qualitative strand of the study explored how homeless young people develop their pregnancy attitudes and make
reproductive and
sexual health decisions in the context of their social networks. Broadly, this study found that homeless youth do not appear to form their pregnancy attitudes in isolation, and rather, there are many salient influences found in their social surroundings that are associated with their
reproductive and
sexual attitudes and behaviors. Moreover, results showed that this population is in urgent need of accurate information on
reproductive and
sexual health information and services, as well as opportunities to interact with caring, non-judgmental medical and service providers. As such, this dissertation…

▼ Women living in rural areas experience barriers in accessing contraceptives, including those related to geographic distance, cost, and the lack of health care providers. Further, conscientious objection to provision of sexual and reproductive health services has a more significant impact in these settings given limited alternatives. The overarching dynamics likely have an even greater impact on adolescents, as young people are less able to navigate complex systems or secure the necessary resources to overcome financial and travel barriers. This multi-method qualitative study investigated the contraceptive experiences of adolescents living in rural Ontario through the use of an online survey, in-depth interviews with adolescents, and key informant interviews. We found that the available sexual health information is difficult to navigate and inconsistent in quality. The services offered in rural areas are limited. The need for more readily accessible information and contraceptive services in rural Ontario is considerable.

The purpose of this practice-based study was to make an interactive guidance video for young people about the effects of cannabis on sexual and reproductive health. The study intended to answer what kind of effects cannabis usage has on sexual and reproductive health and what is characteristic of a good guidance video. The objective of this study was to increase young people’s knowledge of the effects of cannabis usage on sexual and reproductive health through a video animation. This study was conducted in collaboration with Viva- project.
Cannabis usage has several injurious effects on sexual and reproductive health. Researches highlight especially effects on sperm concentration and count. As cannabis usage is common and effects are long-term it is important for young people to know about negative impacts. Using cannabis at young age can for example later lead to childlessness.
The animation is informative, fun and it activates the viewers to think whether it is wise to use cannabis. The emphasis is on sexual and reproductive health. In the future it would be useful to upload the animation on social media so the in-formation would be easily available. The existing research of the topic being somewhat limited, more research could be conducted on the subject.

▼ Adolescent-friendly
health services (AFHS) are considered key to addressing the
sexual and
reproductive health (SRH) of adolescents. Since 2009 Nepal has been integrating AFHS into its public
health facilities. Despite much attention, and attempts to scale up AFHS, utilisation remains suboptimal. This thesis, therefore, aims to understand the factors contributing to adolescents’ utilisation of AFHS in Nepal.Based on an interpretive research framework, a qualitative case study methodology was employed to understand the utilisation of AFHS.
Health service utilisation was assessed through record review and via observations of
health facilities, which results were compared with national standards criteria. A social constructionist lens and principles of grounded theory guided my understanding of adolescents’ experience and the factors associated with their accessing SRH services from AFHS; the meaning of AFHS for adolescents;
health care providers’ attitudes towards adolescents seeking SRH services; and community perceptions and readiness to accept AFHS. A total of 16 interviews and six focus group discussions with adolescents (n=49), nine interviews with
health care providers, and 13 interviews with key informants were conducted. Thematic analysis was applied in the data analysis. The findings showed that both socio-cultural and
health facility factors influence utilisation of SRH services. Many of these factors stem from the moral framework encapsulated in socio-cultural norms and values related to the
sexual health of adolescents, and
health care providers’ poor value clarification. For example,
health care providers had taken on a policing role in prescribing adolescents’ conformity. In describing their ideal AFHS setting, adolescents spoke about maintaining privacy and confidentiality, and dignified SRH services. In stark comparison, the overriding community perception was to ascribe abstinence-only education from these
health facilities. This study provides an empirical understanding of the reasons and factors associated with SRH service utilisation, which goes much deeper than program provision of AFHS in Nepal. The recommendations offered can potentially strengthen policy, program and services to improve AFHS, together with creating an enabling and supportive environment for adolescents to access SRH services.

▼ There is widespread ambiguity in public
health about what constitutes effective collaboration and how to assess its effectiveness, despite the central role it plays in
health promotion practice. This thesis examine intersectoral collaboration between the public
health and media sectors in developing, implementing and evaluating entertainment-education programs to improve adolescent
sexual and
reproductive health. Four case studies from the Asia Pacific region were examined: (1) Indigenous radio drama (Australia); (2) Indigenous comic book and multi-media (Australia); (3) radio drama (Solomon Islands); (4) internet game (Philippines). Semi-structured interviews with media,
health and community workers involved in the collaborations, and a content analysis of collaboration documents were undertaken. A best practice model – the Community Coalition Action Framework (CCAT) - was employed as an organising framework to facilitate inductive inquiry of the participant’s experiences. The experiences of the participants suggest that there are three key areas that should be considered when planning, implementing and evaluating intersectoral endeavours. First, the contextual factors in the environment which may impact on the work of the collaboration. I argue that certain strategies are required which address barriers and enhance enabling factors in the community. Those case study collaborations which did not address contextual factors were less successful in overcoming barriers, building on community capacity, and developing a suitable program for adolescents. Second, internal factors of the collaborations also need to be considered (particularly power relations, commitment, interpersonal relationships and trust), particularly as these arrangements impact on the quality and effectiveness of the entertainment-education program. Third, the impact of the entertainment-education program and the activities of the collaboration should be evaluated so that key lessons can be learnt. I suggest that evaluation practice needs to change so that it is collective- across collaboration members and community stakeholders - so that the impact of these activities can be captured. This would require assessing not just the impact of the entertainment-education program on adolescents – as in the case studies - but also recognising the broader and arguably more sustainable impact of the collaborations activities on the community. A number of best practice guidelines are presented.

▼ Youth in foster care experience disparate
sexual and
reproductive health outcomes relative to non-foster youth. Many factors influencing these disparities may be amenable to policy intervention. This analysis uses several strategies to critically examine policy options to support the
sexual and
reproductive health of foster youth in Washington state. First, it evaluates existing Washington law and policy related to the
health of youth in foster care and finds the state has a responsibility to support the
sexual and
reproductive health of foster youth. Then, it analyzes policies in other states using critical review, direct evaluation of implemented programs, and interviews with policy experts. Next, it examines medical, public
health, and legal literature to describe research- and expert opinion-informed policy recommendations. Finally, it synthesizes these analyses to provide specific policy recommendations for the state of Washington.
