▼ Background: Risky sexual behaviour among the youth of South Africa is one of the
major health concerns in the country because it is associated with negative
reproductive health outcomes such as high teenage pregnancies and exposure to
sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.
Objective: The main objective for this study is to examine the factors influencing
risky sexual behaviour among the youth in South Africa in order to make
recommendations for strategies that would help reproductive health programmes in
planning.
Data and methods: The research uses data from the 2003 South African
Demographic and Health survey. The study population comprised of 4597 female
youth aged 15-34 years old. Bivariate analyses and multinomial logistic regression
were used to determine the factors affecting risky sexual behaviour among the youth.
The factors that were significant in the multiple regression models were regarded as
the most important variables associated with risky sexual behaviour.
Results: Out of 4597 female youth, 114 (2.5%) had low risk sexual behaviour, 2112
had medium risk sexual behaviour and 278 had high risk sexual behaviour. The
results revealed that risky sexual behaviour varies by background variables. Risky
sexual behaviour increases with age, is higher among urban than rural youth i higher
among youth with secondary education than youth in other educational categories. In
addition, the results showed that risky sexual behaviour vary according to province of
residence. The highest risky behaviour was observed in Kwa-Zulu Natal (22.7%) and
Western Cape (21.5%). whereas North West and Eastern Cape (5.1% and 3.9%)
respectively, had low risky sexual behaviour. The multi-nominal analyses indicate
that having a radio and marital status were significant) associated with risky sexual
behavior), [OR=1.23, Cl=l.23]
Conclusion: The study concludes that policies and programmes designed at reducing
risky sexual behaviour among the youth should continue be supported and
encouraged. Since having a radio is associated with low risky sexual behaviour. it is
suggested that messages encouraging the youth on safe sex by use of condoms, reduce
number of sexual partners, avoid receiving money or gifts in exchange of sex should
continue to be reinforced through radio. Furthermore, parents should also be taught
through a radio on how to educate their children to practice safe sex. Finally, the
results show that there is still need for further research on risky sexual behaviour
among the youth. Future research should, among other things focus on strategies to
delay sexual debut among the youth, the role of parents and good cultural practices.

▼ In order to provide comprehensive sexual health
education, it is important for teachers and health care
professionals to understand trends related to adolescent sexual
practices. Anecdotal reports over the past decade indicate that
oral sex is becoming an increasingly common and casual activity
among adolescent females. to investigate the validity of this claim
the author set out to study the oral sex behaviours and related
attitudes of Canadian young women. A total of 181 women (ages 18-25
years) completed two anonymous self-report questionnaires: one to
gather data about intercourse and oral sex experiences, and the
other to assess degree of identification with feminist ideology.
Analysis revealed that oral sex and intercourse are equally
prevalent among young women and that the two behaviors have similar
emotional implications. However, as compared to intercourse, women
tend to regard oral sex as less intimate and are significantly less
likely to use protection against sexually transmitted infections
when engaging in oral sex. The findings indicate that there is no
significant relationship between oral sex and feminism, but that
some women find fellatio empowering. Trends related to sexual
activity as well as implications for school-based sex education
programs are discussed.

▼ This study was carried out to investigate from an ethical perspective how the “UNESCO International Guidelines on Sexuality Education” can be implemented in Zambian secondary schools. The objectives of the study were to: i) explain the debate for and against school-based sexuality education, ii) assess the current curriculum on sexuality education in Zambian secondary schools, iii) find out views from key informants concerning the implementation of school-based sexuality education in Zambian secondary schools, iv) give an ethical evaluation of how the UNESCO International Guidelines on Sexuality Education should be implemented in Zambian secondary schools.
The data was collected through documentary research and also by conducting interviews with some key informants from the Ministry of Education, religious groups, Forum for African Women Educationists Zambia (FAWEZA) and parents. Different interview schedules were used to collect data from these different groups. The methodology employed was empirical research combined with an ethical analysis that applied the ethical theory of Utilitarianism and Rights Theory.
The study shows that the Ministry of Education in Zambia does not have a serious policy with regard to sexuality education in schools. Although there is a statement made in the Education Policy Document Educating Our Future concerning the teaching of sexuality education, very little has been done to enforce it. Analysis of the secondary school curriculum revealed that young people learn about their sexuality in Environmental Science, Biology, Civic Education and Religious Education. Nonetheless, these subjects do not cover most of the essential information and skills that young people need. Besides, these subjects are optional except environmental science which is compulsory at grades 8 and 9. This makes young people potentially vulnerable to risky sexual behaviour which in turn affects their health and their education process. Further, very few parents discuss issues of sexuality with their children due to certain social norms or because they are too busy to do so.
The views of those opposed to school-based sexuality education are that school programmes talk about sexual issues in a crude way. For instance, young people are taught to use contraceptives and condoms. This encourages them to indulge in premarital sex. Nevertheless, considering the overall results of the findings and based on human rights and utilitarianism, it is concluded that implementing the UNESCO International Guidelines is preferable because it promotes the well-being of young people better than home-based sexuality education and what is in the current curriculum for secondary schools.
Based on these findings, the study made some recommendations. The prominent ones are that the Ministry of Education should reinforce a policy on the teaching of sexuality education in schools and teacher training colleges to equip teachers with the information and skills that they would later teach to the pupils. It is also recommended that the…

▼ Despite advances toward equality, stereotypes still restrict the roles of individuals within society. Violation of these stereotypes results in backlash, in the form of social and financial penalties (Rudman, 1998), serving to discourage vanguards. Women specifically risk backlash for demonstrating agency, and in an effort to avoid this backlash, may mitigate their agentic expressions, compromising performance (Rudman, Moss-Racusin, Glick, & Phelan, 2012). The Backlash Avoidance Model (BAM; MossRacusin & Rudman, 2010) identifies low perceived entitlement as the mechanism through which backlash fear influences performance. Yet, with the rise of many prominent women in traditionally atypical domains, how do some women effectively express agency and attain success? I hypothesized that status—a perceived performance advantage (Fişek, Berger, & Norman, 2005)—protects women’s perceived entitlement, resulting in optimal performance on tasks requiring agency. This dissertation introduced the Modified-BAM (M-BAM), which incorporates the role of status in women’s backlash avoidance strategies to account for initial differences in perceived entitlement that allow some women to perform agentic tasks without disruption from fear of backlash. The study tested the outlined theory and the hypothesized M-BAM by manipulating women’s perception of status through a bogus aptitude measure. Although the M-BAM was not supported by the data, status did uniquely boost women’s interest to persevere in the relevant domain, suggesting that it does enhance self-efficacy. Larger implications of the results related to the advancement of vanguards in an array of atypical domains are discussed.

▼ Sex offender treatment, policy, and perception are greatly intertwined in the numerous policies in place. Current policies tend to reflect negative perceptions toward both
sex offenders and treatment and an inaccurate view of the effectiveness of current
sex offender policies. The source of these inaccurate views, however, is not entirely clear, with some researchers linking it to a simple lack of exposure to accurate information. Additionally, the broadly negative perceptions, emotions, and beliefs may be leading individuals to utilize more superficial routes of processing, as explained by the Elaboration Likelihood Model. Given the potential for the public’s opinion to make a significant impact on the direction of future policies and treatment support, understanding what influences these perceptions could offer valuable information for the future.
Three hundred twenty-three UND students were randomly assigned to six groups receiving information on either
sex offender treatment or policies using difference presentation styles to examine how presentation style and accurate information may influence their understanding and support of
sex offender treatment and policies. Scales were created or used from existing measures that reflected attitudes toward
sex offenders,
sex offender treatment, knowledge or support of
sex offender policies, and need for cognition. These scales were completed prior to and following the information sections to determine if the provided information influenced their understanding, perceptions, and support. A series or ANOVAs were conducted and significant main effects found such that policy information led to greater policy support, those who were presented with information in a non-narrative, statistics based presentation style had a significant increase in policy awareness, support, and belief in policy effectiveness, and those that were high in need for cognition exhibiting a decrease in negative attitudes toward
sex offenders. The findings indicate that providing accurate information about
sex offenders, even in persuasive ways, may not change their beliefs, and that further research on those more intrinsically invested in research or this particular topic or with those more notably different in their route of processing may provide more conclusive information on how to persuade the public to believe the research instead of their long-standing inaccurate perceptions.

▼ Sex offender policy, treatment, and public perception are greatly intertwined in the numerous policies in place regarding
sex offenders. These policies tend to reflect the underlying perceptions and myths about
sex offenders than the reality of sexual offenses and treatment. These perceptions have also had a role in shaping psychological treatment of
sex offenders through enacted policies and public support, or dissent, for community treatment centers, half-way houses, or residency restriction laws. With the sizeable potential impact of the public's perceptions of these issues, examination of their perceptions of
sex offenders,
sex offender policies, and
sex offender treatment, and whether accurate information can change these perceptions, will offer valuable information for the future.
Two hundred sixty UND students were randomly assigned to 8 different groups receiving varying amounts of information on
sex offender information, policies, and treatment to examine how receiving accurate information may influence their perceptions and understand of
sex offenders and agreement with
sex offender policies. Scales were created that reflected understanding of policies, policy effectiveness, treatment support, and support of punitive policies. There were significant main effects for policy information on understanding of policies and treatment support. Significant interactions were also found on the understanding of policies scale and support of punitive policies. There were also significant findings on the Positive and Negative Affect Scale for
statistics information indicating that providing statistics information to individuals may decrease positive affect. The findings indicate that providing individuals with information about current policies in place may be effective way to increase their understanding and support for policies and treatment methods, but the inclusion of other types of information (such as treatment information or statistics information) may lead to a more realistic assessment of their understanding.

▼ This study examined how people define having sex as a function of the specificbehaviors (e.g., penetrative vs. nonpenetrative acts; whether or not orgasm occurs) andthe context in which the behaviors occur (i.e., engaged in by self vs. other). Utilizing amore complex and sensitive research design than in previous studies in this area, 267 menand 367 women rated their degree of confidence that each of 21 physically intimatebehaviors (e.g., penile-vaginal intercourse) counted as sex. Separate ratings were madefor each behavior when engaged in by (1) the respondent and (2) his/her partner withsomeone else. Results showed that, for both sexes, some behaviors (e.g., penile vaginalintercourse) were far more confidently rated as having sex than were others (e.g., oralgenitalstimulation). Further, both men and women were significantly more certain that abehavior counted as “having sex” when engaged in by their partner (with someone else)than when they engaged in the behavior. Finally, the order in which the two scenarios(i.e., self vs. partner) was presented significantly affected participants’ ratings (e.g.,partner’s behaviors were more confidently rated as “having sex” when these rating weremade before rather than after rating one’s own behaviors). These findings are discussedin the context of participants’ qualitative explanations for their ratings. Themethodological and sexual health implications of the results are explored.

▼ Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines adolescent people as those between the ages of 10 to 19 years. These age groups are often characterized as being at a life stage of increased experimentation and exploration associated with a range of risky behaviors, including risky sexual behaviors. Moreover, adolescents are less likely than adults to have the information, skills and support to protect themselves against HIV/AI DS and other consequences of premarital
sex.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of premarital
sex and unprotected sexual intercourse practice and associated factors among secondary school adolescent students in Sebeta Town, 2014.
Methods and Materials: A questionnaire based cross sectional study design was used to conduct this study on 284 secondary school adolescent students in Sebeta Town from April to May 2014. The data was processed and analyzed by using Epi Info 3.4.3 and SPSS version 16.0. Frequency distribution, charts, figures and tables were used to present the results. Odd ratio and logistic regression were used to determine association between specified factors and to control cofounders respectively.
Results: The prevalence of premarital
sex among the study participants of this study was 28.3% and 90.1% of them were utilized condom during their sexual intercourse. The premarital
sex was strongly associated with grade level and their family income. Grade ten students were 7.99 times high risk to be practiced premarital
sex than others (AOR=7.99, CI= (2.2-28.5)) and grade eleven students were 7.81 times high risk to be involved in premarital
sex than others grade level students (AOR= 7.81, CI= (2.4-25.4)). Students belong to family earned 500-1000 ETB were
viii
2.47 times high risk to be experienced premarital
sex than others students (AOR= 2.47, CI= (1.01-6.07))
Conclusion: The prevalence of premarital
sex among the study participants was higher than the studies conducted in different parts of Ethiopia and almost all of the students who have had history of sexual practices utilized condom during their sexual intercourse. Premarital
sex among the study participants of this study was strongly associated with students‘ grade level and family monthly income status.
Recommendation: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and schools in collaboration should provide psychosexual services for adolescent students at secondary school level.
Key words: premarital
sex, unprotected
sex, adolescent students, Ethiopia.

▼ The study was undertaken in three provinces in Zambia namely: Central, Copperbelt and Western Provinces. The study sought to investigate the absence of sex education in Zambian secondary schools as a missed opportunity in the prevention of HIV infection. The objectives of the study were; to explore the consequences of lack of sex education in secondary schools in Zambia, examine if lack of sex education is a missed opportunity in the prevention of HIV, explore the views of secondary school graduates concerning sex education and establish whether secondary education in Zambia promotes the ability to protect oneself against HIV infection.
In this particular study, both qualitative and quantitative designs were used. The combined approach provided an opportunity of using tools such as questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions.
The research was necessitated by the general lack of knowledge about sex education as a way of preventing HIV infections in Zambia. The study was guided by two theories: socialisation theory and social learning theory. The elements of socialisation theory in this study are primary and secondary socialisation with a main focus on secondary socialisation as the study investigated the education system in Zambia. The elements of the social learning theory are awareness, self-control, self-efficacy and social support. The results from the study showed that lack of sex education in secondary schools was a missed opportunity in the prevention of HIV infections in Zambia. Furthermore, the study revealed that relationships among the youths which led to sexual intercourse had affected most of the youth both in secondary schools and at times in tertiary education due to the lack of comprehensive understanding of human sexuality.
The study revealed that the pupils had observed the need for sex education in schools to be taught so that they could know how to handle and protect themselves. The study further revealed that the means of educating the pupils in secondary schools to protect themselves from HIV infections were misleading as pupils had not reached the maturity to assess the media critically.
From the findings of the study it was recommended that there was need for an intervention in the education system so that the education provided attended to the social needs. It is further proposed that there should be an innovation in the curriculum, that is, life skills, based in order to equip the pupils to protect themselves from HIV infections and manage their sexuality in a healthy way.
The innovations should build on what is in place looking at both the strengths and weaknesses of the current approaches of education. The study further recommended rethinking or reorganising the content of the education system in order to deliver the skills and make the content learner participatory. Innovation such as sex education may be novelty and considering that curriculum innovation is complex, the study proposes a careful planning for the development and implementation of the curriculum that…

▼ This study was undertaken to investigate the role of sex education in mitigating teenage pregnancy in selected secondary schools in Namwala district of Zambia. The researcher employed qualitative research strategies to collect data from 42 respondents through interviews. The respondents included school administrators (Head teachers, Deputy Headteachers Heads of Departments), teachers and pupils. The Head teachers. Deputy Head teachers. Heads of Department and teachers responded to the one to one interview guides. The pupils responded to focus group discussions.
The findings of the study were that through sex education, learners acquired skills in dealing with their sexuality and knowledge about how human bodies function and how to deal with their sexuality. Sex education also helped to change learners' attitudes and values in dealing with their sexuality which had resulted into the reduction in teenage pregnancy and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs. Additionally, sex education helped learners to make informed and responsible decisions about their sexuality and helped them to become responsible adults. However, in school, sex education was not very much emphasized. Thus, learners did not receive enough knowledge and skills on sexuality education due to lack of materials designed specifically for sex education. There was also lack of trained teachers to teach the subject.
The findings also showed that traditional beliefs and values hindered the effective delivery of sex education. This was so because of the traditional myths associated with sex education and because discussions of sexual matters in were viewed as a taboo in the African traditional society.
The other findings also showed that sex education was integrated in other subjects and as a result it received little attention or no emphasis compared to the other subjects. This is so because sex education was not a standalone subject and was not allocated on the school time table. Sex education was not examinable and as a result most teachers did not put much attention during lesson delivery as they did with other subjects.
Based on these findings, the researcher made some recommendations. The prominent ones were that the Ministry of General Education through Curriculum Development Centre should come up with relevant teaching and learning materials for sex education and also make sex education a standalone subject so as to allocate more time to teaching it.
Furthermore, the researcher recommended that the Ministry of General Education should allocate resources to support the training of sex education teachers and schools through the office of Guidance and Counseling should maximize the sensitization of learners on tradition beliefs and values that hindered the effective teaching of sex education.

▼ There is little research about how counsellors experience the process of sex addiction counselling. This study used the research methodology of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore how counsellors experience and manage ethical tensions in sex addiction counselling. Four certified sex addiction therapists (CSATs) were selected as participants and interviewed about their experiences. Analysis of interview transcripts produced three superordinate themes: preventative strategies, nuanced emotions during ethical tensions, and resolving tensions. Preventative strategies describe the counsellors’ efforts to implement practices that prevented negative experiences with ethical tensions. The theme of nuanced emotions refers to the intricate emotional experience the counsellors often had when they encountered ethical tensions. Resolving tensions relates how counsellors constructed ethical and personally meaningful decision-making processes to resolve their tensions. Findings are discussed in relation to extant literature about sex addiction counselling, including this study’s contributions, implications for practice and future research, and strengths and limitations.

▼ Education is an ongoing process and it is never 'complete' in anyone's life. Sex education is
relevant in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in Botswana. The study was under taken to
investigate the influence of sex education on the sexual behaviour of JSS learners. Adolescents
today are faced with challenges and they need support to face these challenges.
The study was guided by the following research objectives: What constitutes the nature and
characteristics of sex education? What is the attitude of learners towards sex education? What is
the effect of sex education on learners? And what strategies can be put in place to improve sex
education?
Three schools were purposely selected for the study. From the population of 1550 learners, 55
were sampled, from 145 teachers, 25 were sampled and from 75 parents 9 were sampled. The
quantitative approach through survey method was used in collecting data through questionnaires.
Qualitative approach was used to collect data. Interviews were recorded manually and later
coded, grouped and finally analysed.
The following findings were shown by the study. Sex education should be included in the
curriculum. Sex education does influence the behaviour of learners. Sex education is an
important aspect in one's life. Modern technology should be used for sex education. Trained
personnel are required in schools.

▼ Studies confirming adaptive
sex allocation, or a flexible relative investment in males and females, have been extensive in Hymenoptera, and have been used to predict the quality of biological control agents, to theorize how eusociality is maintained, and to predict population dynamics. Most hymenopterans are haplodiploid, in which females are derived from fertilized eggs and males from unfertilized eggs, so haplodiploid mothers may have a greater ability to adaptively adjust
sex allocation. Thysanoptera and Aleyrodidae are also haplodiploid organisms, many of them being important agricultural pests, but less comprehensive studies on
sex allocation have been performed with these taxa. Both taxa are also mostly herbivorous, drawing in new elements that may affect
sex allocation patterns. This review is a summary of all studies of Aleyrodidae and Thysanoptera
sex ratios as affected by temperature, host plant and nutrition, conspecifics, competitors, bacterial and viral endosymbionts, predators, parasitoids and other pathogens.
Sex ratio influences were found in studies testing effects of temperature, host plant, conspecifics, competitors, bacterial endosymbionts and a fungal pathogen. Viruses, predators and parasitoids were not found to affect
sex ratios in Aleyrodidae and Thysanoptera, although not many studies have collected the data to assess these potential factors. Because
sex ratio studies in Thysanoptera and Aleyrodidae have only recorded secondary, adult or operational
sex ratios instead of primary
sex ratios, differential developmental mortality is left as a confounding variable, and it is difficult to determine whether
sex ratio changes are due to
sex allocation. To conclude whether
sex allocation of mothers is taking place, the primary
sex ratios need to be recorded, so we have also included methods for tools, including cytogenetics and survival assays, to find primary
sex ratios or confirm differential developmental mortality in these haplodiploid organisms. Future discoveries of
sex allocation in Aleyrodidae and Thysanoptera may lead to better predictions of pest populations.

▼ M.A. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2012.
Among evolutionary theorists it is generally accepted that mating behaviors largely revolve around the availability of potential mates, as well as the amount and type of parental investment expended by either gender. It has been suggested that these factors also directly influence the expression of sociosexuality (i.e. willingness to engage in uncommitted sex) within any given population. More specifically, when one gender is in abundant supply, they must adapt their mating preferences to those of the gender in limited supply in order to attract a sexual partner, or otherwise run the risk of never finding a partner as a result of population constraints. While most research on this topic has sought to examine these effects in environments where the sex ratio is naturally biased, this study empirically manipulates the sex ratios of the website population in an attempt to demonstrate the theorized adaptive shifts in sociosexuality.

▼ This study is a theological and cultural analysis of sexuality and fa'afafine (effeminate male, third gender) in the Samoan context. Specifically, the study focuses on sexuality in Samoa through the lens of social justice. The voices of the fa’afafine community are highlighted to understand the tension between Samoan church and culture, and sexuality. It is the contention of this study that the experiences and agency of fa’afafine in Samoan culture and church can provide the groundwork for a more affirming ethic of sexuality. The author, a Samoan clergy member, seeks to answer two probing questions: 1) Is the Samoan culture and faith inclusive of people regardless of gender, and sexuality? And 2) what does that inclusivity look like through the lens of social justice?

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine how sex workers rights organizations use their websites as a site of activist and advocacy work and ask (i) how do various organizations conceptualize sex work on their websites, and to what extent do they incorporate an intersectional feminist perspective? (ii) what communication strategies are used by the four organizations to target audiences in the viewing public? (iii) what audiences do the four websites target? (iv) how do the four organizations discuss successes and challenges on their websites? (v) in what ways do sex worker right organizations use websites to further their goals?
The websites of Maggie’s, POWER, and Stella attempt to embrace an intersectional feminist perspective of sex work, while PACE does not. The four organizations strategically use their websites to target audiences with diverse needs, specifically through advocacy efforts in educating the general public about the legitimacy of sexual labour. Additionally, to increase the use of the websites by sex workers, using social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter augment the untapped potential for creating action, mobilization, interaction, and dialogue on the websites.

▼ The purpose of this research is to examine the attitudes of undergraduate students at a California State University regarding their experiences with
sex education in the K-12 school setting. Parents and school administrators are polled regularly to find out what they think should be in
sex education curriculum (Constantine, Jerman, & Huang, 2007; Eisenberg, Madsen, Oliphant, & Resnick, 2012; Greenblatt, 2008; Kantor & Levitz, 2017; McKee, Ragsdale, & Southward, 2014; Turnbull, van Schaik, & van Wersch, 2010), but adolescents and young adults are rarely asked what they want from their
sex education (Forrest et al., 2004). There is a significant gap in academic literature that asks young adults to first reflect on their experience of receiving
sex education, but even fewer studies have then asked those same young adults what they think should be taught (Walcott, Chenneville, & Tarquini, 2011). In addition to this, virtually no research exists that views those answers through the lens of gender to find out if there is a disproportion
in the topics taught to, or preferred by, males or females. This research could potentially add to the ongoing conversation about how instructors teach
sex education, and what is included in that instruction. It is the hope of the researcher that the outcome of this research will positively impact the breadth of knowledge that young people receive in their
sex education curriculum.
The research study was designed using a quantitative approach by gathering data through online surveys. The survey questions examined students??? previous experiences of their own
sex education, their attitudes about those experiences, and their current attitudes about
sex education. Because the research questions ask students to explore their current attitudes about
sex education curriculum, this cross-sectional survey design enabled the researcher to measure the current beliefs and attitudes of the students surveyed (Creswell, 2012). Surveys were sent to students enrolled in specific classes within the College of Education at a California State University. Survey topics included basic demographic information, when/if participants were taught
sex education, what topics they received instruction on, and what topics they would recommend be included in future curriculums. Through frequencies and crosstabulations, the researcher was able to compare specific data sets and responses based on participants??? gender and experience with
sex education curriculum.
Conclusions Reached
Overall results of this study revealed that there is very little relationship between the type of
sex education students received when they were an adolescent, and what kind of
instruction they support and recommend as adults. The ratio of participants that received abstinence curricula and recommend it was not positively consistent, nor was the relationship between learning and recommending comprehensive
sex education, since most participants recommended comprehensive education regardless of what they received growing up.

▼ This study examines the impact of cultural gender norms created by differences in traditional agricultural practices on observed
sex ratios at birth over last four decades. Building on the plough hypothesis developed by Ester Boserup and the work of Alesina et al. (2013), this study provides a further empirical test of the legacy of the plough. I perform empirical analysis on micro level data from the Demographic and Health Survey in over 75 countries to develop a number of stylized facts on this relationship. Descendants of plough societies exhibit a more male skewed
sex ratio at birth today. These descendants exhibit a highly male-skewed
sex ratio of last birth, which is achieved through son-based fertility stopping preferences. From the 1980s onward the expected
sex ratio at birth of plough descendants becomes highly male skewed at lower levels of total fertility, providing evidence that these descendants realize their son preference through
sex selective abortions.

▼ The Ministry of Education has shown commitment to ensure that female pupils get
the same equal and quality education as their male counterparts in high schools since the 1990s. Unfortunately studies have shown that the performance of girls in these
institutions is below that of boys at both grades 9 and 12 national examinations.
Recent studies by Kelly (1999) and Kasonde-Ngandu (2003) have cited rampant peer
sexual harassment of girls as a factor creating a hostile learning environment for girls and consequently resulting in poor performance. This study therefore sought to
assess the prevalence and extent of sexual harassment as well as control measures
and their effectiveness.
Specific objectives were: to assess the extent of peer harassment in high schools;
assess the relationship between group behaviour (due to peer pressure) and the
prevalence of sexual harassment; investigate measures put in place by the schools to
control peer sexual harassment and their effectiveness; establish the actions taken by
the schools against perpetrators of sexual harassment. My study sites are Mindolo and Chamboli high schools in Kitwe. The study
employed cross section survey design to collect data at one point in time. Data was
collected using semi-structured interview guide, focus group discussion guide and
self administered questionnaires. Random stratified sampling was used to choose participants from the population of
1340. A total of 102 girls, 20 boys and 16 teachers and administrators participated
from the two schools. The District co-ordinator and the District Education Board Secretary also participated, bringing the total number of the sample to 138.
Questionnaires were distributed to the girls, the teachers and administrators. 2 focus group discussions were conducted at each school one for girls and another for boys.In-depth interviews were conducted with administrators, grade teachers, school
counsellors and pupils. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected. The findings indicated that the prevalence rate to 8 counts of sexual harassment at
school A was 90% and school B was 96%, giving us and average of 93%. Girls at
both schools had experienced more harassment from groups of boys than individuals.
In spite of the high prevalence rate only 35% of the girls perceived their school to
have a lot of sexual harassment while another 35% know. Further findings revealed
that 68% of the girls described their school atmosphere as welcoming and 32% said
it was hostile. 47% said they experienced sexual harassment in class, 22% a few metres from the school fence while the rest (23%) mentioned corridors and school hall. Girls are not safe either in or outside their classrooms. They argued that this had a negative impact on their academic performance. The study also established that pupils do not feel free to report sexual harassment to teachers and the few who reported did not get good responses. 52% confide in their friends while 39% tell anyone. ▼ To be male or female, that is the question. In Drosophila melanogaster, all aspects of
somatic
sex determination are under the control of the binary switch gene,
Sex lethal (Sxl).
The primary determinant of the activity state of Sxl is the number of X-chromosomes. XX
embryos develop as females, while XY embryos develop as males. Sxl is stably expressed
in females via autoregulatory mRNA splicing that occurs as a consequence of a brief pulse
of transcription from establishment promoter SxlPe. Female-specific expression of SxlPe
requires a two X chromosome dose of the X-signal elements sisA, sc, upd and runt. Males
fail to express SxlPe as they carry a single dose of the X-signal elements (XSEs).
Understanding regulation of SxlPe demanded an advanced quantification tool to monitor
Sxl activity in vivo. The Sxl transgene system thus developed enables the monitoring of
endogenous Sxl activity, both as nascent transcripts and as mature mRNA. The key feature
is that intron sequences are swapped between related species to allow allele-specific
detection, by in situ hybridization, of expression from mutant and wild type transgenes
side-by-side in every nucleus of the embryo. The transgene system is fully functional and
helps exploit classical Drosophila genetics to monitor the biological effects of engineered
Sxl mutations. Using this powerful system, I have characterized the cis interactions of the
X-signal elements Sc/Da, repressor Dpn and also defined the regulatory regions of SxlPe,
to discover the means by which this sensitive promoter switch operates.
In defining the different regulatory units our results validated the previous findings of
Estes et al., using SxlPe lacZ fusions. The 3.0kb enhancer is indeed an equivalent of the
full length endogenous SxlPe enhancer and drives a robust, wild type expression. In
addition, studying the promoter deletions in context of full length Sxl transgenes
confirmed that the minimal, 400bp enhancer that drove low lacZ expression in Estes et al.,
does activate SxlPe and is both necessary and sufficient for SxlPe activation.
In studying how binding site interactions impacted SxlPe regulation, my findings revealed
that the loss of the single canonical E-box, Sc/Da 3 turned the SxlPe switch off, killing
females. This not only led to the discovery of a prominent regulatory site critical for
female-specific regulation but also challenged the previous notion that multiple Sc/Da are
responsible for proper operation of SxlPe switch. Additionally, Sc/Da 3 proved that
canonical E-box sites are important or even more so to SxlPe regulation, compared to the
non-canonical sites.
Mutating repressor Dpn binding sites triggered ectopic SxlPe expression in males and
subsequently male lethality. The non-canonical site 3 had the strongest effect on SxlPe
regulation than the canonical Dpn sites 1 and 2. The surprising finding is that Dpn binding
site mutation is not only capable of initiating SxlPe expression from the mutant bearing
transgene, but also activating the wild-type Sxl from the control…

▼ Using semi-structured interviews, this research brings to light the lived experiences of thirteen men informally employed as sex workers in Jamaica and concentrates on both determining the motivations of Jamaican men involved in the informal sex trade and understanding the men's perceptions and understandings of the tourist women with whom they become involved with.
Female sex tourism is found to be used in part as a mechanism for escaping poverty, allowing men to provide for their families, an important area for male identity in Jamaica. The sex tourism of Western women also allows Jamaican men an arena to both secure sexual access to women as well as associated social status.
The link between sex tourism and racism, and the racial stereotypes that precede black men are very familiar to the male sex workers who regard racial motivations, ranging from the desire to experience 'something new' to wanting to engage in sexual relations with 'real black men' to be the primary motivating factor for women who travel to Jamaica to engage in sexual relations with local men.
Using the conceptualizations of the Rude Boy and Rasta performances of masculinity, it is found that local men have cultivated the ability to deploy their masculinity and sexuality in ways that maximized their desirability to tourists, allowing them to perform the stereotyped roles of Jamaican masculinity in ways that accord to tourist women’s expectations.

▼ Strict regulatory mechanisms ensure that the cell’s
genome is perfectly duplicated. In eukaryotic cells, origins of
replication fire once and only once per cell cycle. In the fungus
gnat Sciara coprophila, polytene chromosomes of the salivary glands
undergo locus-specific DNA re-replication, leading to DNA
amplification which are visible along the polytene chromosomes as
DNA puffs. The Sciara genome and transcriptome resources are new,
allowing exploration of Sciara differential gene expression for the
first time. Validation of RNA transcripts that correspond to
developmental events during salivary gland stages and life cycle
stages may point towards biological factors critical to DNA
amplification. More specifically, qPCR validation of transcripts
that are abundant at the start of re-replication and decrease
thereafter during salivary gland development may encode potential
amplification factors that play a significant role in DNA
amplification. Conversely, RNA transcripts that increase during the
eye-spot stages through the end of larval development may encode
proteins encoded by the DNA puffs.
Sex-specific differential gene
expression was also investigated. The X’ inversion is a large
paracentric inversion on the X chromosome; the X’ inversion is only
found in females. Sciara female adult containing the X’ inversion
(XX’) produce only daughters, while XX female adults produce only
sons. There is no Y chromosome in Sciara. Inspection of the
transcriptome maps might indicate which genes resides near the X’
inversion breakpoints or span the breakpoints. Additionally,
differences in transcript levels between male and female Sciara at
different stages may point towards genes involved in
sex
determination pathways. The Sciara transcriptome data will be
compared to Drosophila where the pathway for
sex determination
involves differential splicing of mRNA, which may be encoded by
genes on autosomes, and not just on the
sex
chromosomes.

▼ The literature suggests that globally adolescents initiate sex before age 15. In Ghana, young
females initiate sex relatively earlier than males. Studies indicate that the age at which one
experiences first sex in itself is not the problem, but rather the challenges resulting from the
numerous health and social implications associated with it. One outcome in the literature for
early sexual activity is a high number of sexual partners which is associated with a risk of
contracting HIV/AIDS, STIs and encountering unintended pregnancies. This study examined
the relationship between age at first sex and the number of lifetime sexual partners of men
and women in Ghana (ages 15-49) using the 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey
men’s and women’s datasets. The study also factored in psychosocial and behavioural factors
and assessed their influence on number of lifetime sexual partners. The sample consisted of
7,720 females and 2,993 males.
Three levels of analysis were conducted, namely univariate, bivariate and multivariate
analyses. At the bivariate analysis stage, a statistically significant association was found
between sex, type of place of residence, respondent’s age, education, religion, ethnicity,
marital status and the dependent variable, lifetime sexual partners. Multivariate analyses
showed the main independent variable (age at first sex) and other variables such as age,
educational level, working status, ethnicity, marital status, STI experience and HIV attitudes
were significantly associated with lifetime sexual partners. Some factors differed for males
and females.
The findings reveal that early onset of sex increases one’s number of lifetime sexual partners,
and conversely, a delay in first sex reduces a person’s number of lifetime sexual partners. The
study recommends the prioritization of policies targeted at delaying sexual debut to reduce
adolescents’ exposure to multiple sexual partnerships

▼ Topics related to sexual offending and
sex offenders can provoke a great deal of fear and anxiety in society.
Sex offenders are a group of people who are considered to be especially unpleasant and harmful compared to other types of offenders. Over the past two decades, academic researchers and clinical professionals have developed a variety of assessment methods and treatment programmes to reduce recidivism rates of
sex offenders. Public attitudes toward
sex offenders are proposed to play an important role in the effectiveness of treatment for
sex offenders. Thus, general community members’ attitudes have been widely studied in western countries. However, there is little cross-cultural research exploring Asian people’s attitudes toward
sex offenders. The three keys purposes of this study were to examine university students’ knowledge of and attitudes toward
sex offenders, explore how their knowledge and attitudes were formed, and compare the similarities and differences between New Zealand and Chinese university students. A total of 62 participants were included in this study; 29 from New Zealand and 33 from China. It was hypothesized that New Zealand university students would be more knowledgeable of and positive toward
sex offenders, treatment of
sex offenders and released
sex offenders than Chinese university students. The results supported hypotheses that New Zealand students had greater knowledge of and positive attitudes toward
sex offenders and treatment of
sex offenders. However, no difference was found in people’s attitudes toward released
sex offenders between two groups of students. The results also indicated that the news media was the most common source of information on sexual offending and
sex offenders in both countries. However, there is a great difference in people’s attitudes toward veracity of information provided by the media between New Zealand and Chinese students. The results are considered in light of current research. Implications and future research directions are briefly discussed.
