▼ [ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] More and more people turn to online health communities for social support to satisfy their health-related needs. Previous studies on social support and online health communities in general have focused on the content of social support and the relationship of social support with other entities using traditional social science methods. Little is known about how social support facilitate the knowledge curation process in an online health community. Moreover, the presence of misinformation in online health communities also calls for research into the knowledge curation process in order to reduce the risk of misinformation. This study uses data mining technologies to analyze around one million posts across 23 online health communities. It aims to reveal how information, through social support, flows between the community users working as a whole to dynamically curate knowledge and further interacts with information accuracy. This data-centric research in online health communities 1) discovered that xperiphery users instead of core users dominate the quantitative and content information flow; 2) identified three temporal information flow patterns for the knowledge curation process – each with distinct characteristics; 3) found that information accuracy differed significantly over the identified information flow patterns and time and the information accuracy variation trends with each information flow pattern was identified as well. These findings not only have important implications for social support use, delivery and social support research methodologies but also can inform future online health platform design.

▼ This thesis proposes a hybrid approach in using Google
Distance and WordNet together in a new method, called the Domain
Independent Quality of Service (DIQOS) method for QoS-enabled web
services discovery. Comparisons, using delay, recall, and precision
metrics, between this hybrid approach and an earlier lightweight
Google Distance-only based approach for web
services discovery are
provided. Further, our performance evaluation demonstrates as of
yet undocumented trade-offs between Google distance, Google-WordNet
distance, and WordNet distance approaches for similarity matching
in the web
services discovery phase. The impact of all approaches
on QoS-enabled web service composition is described for
representative web transactions in the travel domain. Findings
include that the recall of signature matching increases by 5 to 15%
for WordNet-assisted Google Distance DIQOS approach over the pure
Google-distance DIQOS variant. WordNet-assisted Google Distance
also shows 20-40 % increases in recall for signature matching
compared to the WordNet only approach. Also, bigram-based, short
sentence, and WordNet-based vector optimizations in specification
similarity matching show an average of 25% increase in recall over
a previous competitive method called the Flexible
Ontology-Independent QOS-enabled method (FOIQOS). Our
WordNet-assisted Google Distance method shows 34% increase in
recall compared to FOIQOS. Our approaches produce 11% lower
precision than FOIQOS, but FOIQOS is speedier as delays are 5 to 15
% lower.

▼ M.Comm.
The animal health industry in South Africa is static and products are of a generic nature. Most of the international players are represented in South Africa. The fact that there are so many players in the market leads to severe competition. In this study the possible application of relationship marketing in the animal health industry was investigated. Sanvet, one of the leading companies in the industry was used for the study. The company was established in September 1994 through an amalgamation of the animal health divisions of Agrihold and Premier Pharmaceuticals. In relationship marketing the focus moves from a short-term transactional approach to long-term relationship marketing. Relationship marketing is the integration of marketing, quality and customer service. The provision of quality customer service involves an understanding of what the customer buys and determines how additional value can be added to the product or service being offered. Quality is the link between what a customer expects and the customers perception of what is being offered. The four P's model is very limited and in relationship marketing three additional elements are being used. The elements are people, processes and the provision of customer service. Customer service creates a clearly differentiated and superior value proposition, and is the central focus of all the other elements. Through the acknowledgement of the contribution of people to getting and keeping customers, within the overall marketing mix, the company's competitive performance will be substantially enhanced. People can be categorised into the following groups based on their role in the company: contractors, modifiers, influencers and isolators. Although the human element is very important in customer service, no amount of energy from personnel can counter poor performance due to unsatisfactory processes. In relationship marketing not only the relationship with the target markets is being addressed but also the relationship with the intemal markets, referral markets, supplier markets, employee markets and influence markets. The employees of the company are the core of an internal marketing plan. Employees are seen as internal customers and jobs as internal products. The ideal form of marketing is to get customers to do the marketing on your behalf. Referral markets within the industry must be identified and marketing activities directed at them. The traditional adversarial relationship between suppliers and their customer must change to a new form of relationship based on co-operation. The competition between companies in their effort to attract suitably motivated and trained employees is increasing. Suitable employees are becoming very scarce resources. Companies must focus their marketing activities to ensure that they and the company are first choice for a potential employee. Financial markets, regulatory markets, the government and shareholders form the influence markets and marketing activities should be addressed to these markets to ensure a long-term…

▼ The focus of the study was to establish the impact of microfinance services to the empowerment of women in kikuyu division. Targeting women from women groups in kikuyu was purposeful for it is an upcoming region with a bit of cosmopolitan inhabitants who would be a good representative of a typical third world region and also being a predominantly a patriarchal society.
An attempt was made to identify a few key indicators of women empowerment such as control of household decisions, conflict resolution, participation in social campaigns and loans and their uses. Quantifiable benefits in terms of diversification of livelihoods, income gains and acquisition of assets which are addressed satisfactorily through this instrument. Theories concerned with women empowerment and microfinance which include Women‘s empowerment theory, financial sustainability paradigm and poverty alleviation theory were looked at. Several empirical studies were reviewed
A sample of 386 respondents, gave 250 usable questionnaires which were analyzed. Analytical tools such as maximum likelihood factor analysis; a data mining tool was used to recover the hidden factors and the corresponding sensitivities. Prior to using MLFA, scree test and proportion of variance method were used to determine the optimal number of common factors to use, where seven components were extracted. Correlation analysis was done amongst the variables which were used in this research study. The findings revealed that there was a high correlation between incomes earned, improved family relationship and leadership potential. These findings were consistent with the literature review where it was observed that empowerment had contributed to improved social and economic well being of the respondents

▼ The purpose of the study was to find out the factors influencing effectiveness of
guidance and counseling services in mixed day secondary schools in Nyakach
district, Kisumu County, Kenya. The study objectives were; to establish the extent to
which teacher/counselors’ training influenced the provision of G&C services in
public mixed day secondary schools in Nyakach District. To assess the extent to
which G&C facilities influence the provision of G&C services. To examine the
extent to which readiness of students to seek G&C services influence the provision of
G&C services. To determine the extent to which students’ attitude influence the
provision of G&C services.
The study employed descriptive survey research design, the sample consisted of all
the 36 public mixed day secondary school in Nyakach District because they are
few,312 students from both forms two and three, and 72 Guidance and Counseling
teachers. Research instruments used to collect data were questionnaires for students
and teachers. The reliability of the study correlated using Pearson product movement
correlation
The study concluded that, most teacher counselors are not trained on G&C, the G&C
departments lack essential resources, the students are willing to seek G&C services
but just a few do seek for guidance and counseling because of lack of confidentiality
and that the areas of G&C mostly focused on by teachers are academic and civic/
social G&C. The study recommends training teachers for guidance and counselling
and that government should provide resources for guidance and counseling. The
study suggests that a further research be carried out in school in urban areas, on the
funding of guidance and counsellingdepartment and also, a research should carried
out on confidentiality matters in G&C.

▼ The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Integrated Development
Plan (lDP) as a tool to accelerate service delivery and economic growth. The study is
guided by the objectives below:
• Investigate the implementation of the municipal Integrated Development Plan
(IDP)
• Establish the problems faced by the Integrated Development Plan (IDP)
• Evaluate the level of participation of the public
• Determine the improvement of service delivery brought about by the Integrated
Development Plan (lDP)
• Assess the level of skills and capacity of municipal officials and their knowledge,
understanding and readiness, for implementation of a successful effective IDP to
accelerate service delivery
• Recommend effective ways to accelerate service delivery, poverty alleviation, job
creation and economic growth through the IDP. The study achieved the objectives
desired through questionnaires. The study is empirical and uses a qualitative
methodology.
The study is empirical, and semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data.
The major findings of the study are that: problems such as finance and politics,
centralization of authority, lack of skilled and trained IDP employees, limited public
participation, and lack of progress on service delivery, economic development, poor
infrastructure and poor implementation of IDP are the main problems plaguing the
delivery of effective and efficient IDP to address service delivery.
Some of the mam recommendations from the researcher to the municipality in
discussion are: Training, skilling and development of municipal employee, Effective
management, budgeting and planning Promotion of social and economic development
and encouragement of public participation through SMMEs, BEE but most important,
effective implementation of IDP policies.

▼ Access to financial services by micro enterprises has long been regarded by the government as an important developmental tool. Poor access to financial services can hamper proper development of small and micro enterprises. Financial services encompass access to banks, which includes access to savings products, loans and operational bank accounts as well as access to insurance products. The study focused not only on the financing part but also on other products, such as savings products and insurance products enjoyed by micro traders.
The research followed a quantitative and qualitative approach. Questionnaires were administered and interviews were conducted with the respondents. Interviews were also conducted with financial institutions to obtain a supply side view. 139 questionnaires were prepared and 108 were received back, this represented 15% male and 85% female respondents. The results suggest that 92% of the respondents have access to banks and Nampost Bank, and are therefore formally included, whereas only 8% of the respondents are excluded, meaning that they do not have bank accounts at all. However the study showed that the traders in open markets do not have access to insurance products. Only 1% of respondents had access to insurance services. Interviews with financial institutions also revealed that there are products specifically tailored for micro traders such as micro loans and SME cheque accounts. From the study it is observed that none of the respondents have access to informal or semiformal financial products. The conclusion of the study is that although some progress has been made with regard to access by micro-traders to banking services, much need to be done in terms of access to insurance services.

▼ Customer advocacy involves strong and passionate recommendations being made by customers. However, there is little published research indicating how and why customers act as advocates for service providers for whom they have strong feelings. The primary aim of this research is to investigate the characteristics of and the contributors to customer advocacy. The research project consists of three studies. Study 1 conceptualizes and develops a scale of customer advocacy based on both qualitative and quantitative research. Results suggest that customer advocacy is a second-order construct characterized by two dimensions - spontaneous endorsement and proactive promotion. The scale exhibits solid reliability, predictive validity and discriminant validity from the theoretically-related measure of general positive WOM. Study 2 draws on self-determination theory to examine the determinants and contingent conditions of customer advocacy. Structural equation modelling analysis indicates that advocacy is largely driven by evaluative and motivational antecedents, while the effect of these antecedents on advocacy is moderated by situational and relational factors. In addition, the determinants of customer advocacy differ in their impact on general positive WOM. For example, the relative importance of the motivational dimensions is stronger in advocacy than in general positive WOM. Study 3 profiles customers with varying degrees of strength of recommendation across a range of demographic, consumer-related and psychographic factors. It is found that customers who are female, heavy users and referred by other customers are more likely to produce the strongest level of recommendation. Advocates and general positive WOM communicators tend to have a greater level of agreeableness and risk-aversion. Further, latent class analysis identifies four segments of customers. These customer segments display varying degrees of recommendation strength and other attitudinal/behavioural loyalty outcomes with unique demographic characteristics. This research appears to make the first attempt to conceptually delineate customer advocacy and to reveal the contributing influences behind the higher levels of recommendation strength. It should assist service managers in prioritizing their targeting of customers and their service improvement efforts in exploiting the power of customer recommendation as an important component of customer strategy.

▼ Osseous associated cervical spondylomyelopathy
(OA-CSM) is a degenerative condition of the cervical vertebral
column that affects mainly giant dog breeds. microRNAs (miRNA) are
small RNAs that play important gene-regulatory roles, and recent
data suggest that circulating miRNAs present in biological fluids
may serve as potential biomarkers of neurodegenerative disease. The
miRNA profile of normal canine cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and OA-CSM
has not been previously described; therefore, the overarching goal
of this study was to characterize the expression levels of miRNAs
present in the CSF of Great Danes and identify differentially
expressed miRNAs present in the CSF of dogs clinically affected
with OA-CSM. Global CSF miRNA expression levels were evaluated in
twelve clinically normal dogs and 12 OA-CSM affected dogs using the
NanoString nCounter platform. We identified eight miRNAs showing
differential expression in OA-CSM dogs compared to clinically
normal dogs. MiR-299-5p and miR-765 were upregulated and miR-494,
miR-612, miR-302-d, miR-4531, miR-4455 and miR-6721-5p were
downregulated in the OA-CSM affected dogs. qRT-PCR was performed to
validate the expression levels of two miRNAs (miR-494 and miR-612).
We found that miR-494 expression was increased by 1.5 fold in the
OA-CSM affected dogs, and the expression of miR-612 was decreased
by 1.2 fold in the OA-CSM affected group (P-value= 0.41 and 0.89
respectively).Data generated from our study represent an initial
characterization of the global miRNA profile of canine CSF and
suggest that a distinct CSF miRNA expression profile is associated
with OA-CSM in dogs.

▼ Total knee replacement (TKR) has been a valid
treatment option for end stage joint OA to alleviate pain and
restore function of knees that suffer from disease or trauma. TKR
affects the kinetics and kinematics of the operated knee. In-vivo
and ex-vivo canine TKR kinematic data is currently lacking in dogs.
Using a 6-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) robotic kinematics system, we
tested the hypothesis that TKR would result in statistically
significant alterations in stifle kinematics when compared with the
intact joint. A joint testing system with 6-DOF (Rotopod R2000) was
used to first, cycle the joints through range of motion, second to
apply external loads on different stifle flexion angles (135°, 90°,
60°) and lastly to apply gait cycle to 8 cadaveric canine stifles,
before and after TKR. Kinematic variables included cranio-caudal
translations, internal-external rotations and varus-valgus
rotations. A Wilcoxon Rank Sum test was performed. Significance
level was set at p< .05.During passive flexion tests, the TKR
tibiae moved significantly more caudally than the native tibiae.
Significant internal rotation of the TKR tibiae occurred as a
result of implantation of the prosthesis. The TKR tibiae had linear
internal rotation throughout flexion. Cranio-caudal translation was
significantly greater after TKR (p<.01) in 90° and 60°.
Internal-external rotation was significantly greater prior to TKR
(p< .01) in all flexion angles. Varus-valgus rotation was
significantly greater prior to TKR procedure (p<.01) only in 60°
of flexion. Stifle joint kinematics are significantly different
after TKR. Canine TKR (BioMedtrix) provides semi-constrained
technology of the knee. Kinematic data from this ex-vivo study will
provide fundamental data to understand and compare in-vivo TKR
kinematic.

▼ The presence of house dust mites (HDMs) and storage
mites (SMs) in the human environment has been established worldwide
and both contribute to atopic disease consisting of atopic
dermatitis, asthma and allergic rhinitis in some individuals. The
Dermatophagoides, Acarus, Tyrophagus and Lepidoglyphus mite genera
contribute to the pathogenesis of atopic disease. HDMs and SMs have
also been implicated in atopic dermatitis in veterinary medicine.
Extensive work has been done for canine mite induced allergic
patients, but relatively little information is available for equine
allergic patients. Intradermal testing is performed in veterinary
patients to identify environmental antigens that cause disease with
the intent of formulating allergen-specific immunotherapy. Equine
HDM and SM intradermal test (IDT) threshold concentrations (TCs)
for the Midwestern United States are unknown. The mite stable fauna
for the Midwestern region of the United States has not been
determined. The objectives of this study were to determine IDT TCs
for HDM and SM species, to quantify mite-specific IgE
concentrations in thirty-eight clinically normal horses over two
seasons and to characterize the mite fauna of a stable in this
region across three seasons. Subjective measurements of IDT
reactions were used to determine the TCs for Dermatophagoides
farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Acarus siro, Tyrophagus
putrescentiae and Lepidoglyphus destructor. The reactions were
scored using a scale of 0 to 4+. Allergen testing concentrations
ranged from 1:320,000-1:20,000 w/v for HDMs and 1:160,000-1:5,000
w/v for SMs. Threshold concentrations were defined as the highest
concentration of a mite allergen where =10% of horses had a
positive subjective reaction (=2+) at 15 min. Analysis of equine
serum-specific IgE was performed using a commercially available
allergen-specific IgE ELISA test. Specialized mite traps and
modified flotation methods were used to collect mites in spring,
late summer and winter from nine locations on one farm. Selected
locations for mite collection represented the three different
stabling environments used, bedding types, feed materials or
combinations thereof. A single-baited mite trap was placed at each
of the locations for a four-day period (96 h), while 200 g of
material was gathered from each site on the fourth day for
flotation. An acarologist morphologically identified and quantified
the species of HDMs and SMs collected. Subjectively determined TCs
were: 1:80,000 w/v for Dermatophagoides farinae in both seasons,
1:80,000 w/v in spring and 1:160,000 w/v in late summer for
Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, 1:40,000 w/v in spring and 1:20,000
w/v in late summer for Acarus siro, 1:20,000 w/v for Lepidoglyphus
destructor in both seasons, and 1:20,000 w/v in spring and 1:10,000
w/v in late summer for Tyrophagus putrescentiae. In both seasons,
at least one horse had a positive serum IgE result for each HDM or
SM evaluated. Negative serum IgE concentrations for all mite
species were present in 55% of horses in spring and 66% in…

▼ The pathogenesis of cervical spondylomyelopathy (CSM)
is similar to cervical spondylotic myelopathy in humans (hCSM). In
patients with hCSM, kinematic MRI (kMRI) is used, which evaluates
how flexion and extension of the cervical vertebral column affects
spinal cord compression. The purposes of this study were to (1)
assess how cervical flexion and extension affect spinal cord
compression in Doberman Pinschers and Great Danes with CSM, and (2)
evaluate an MRI compatible positioning device that allowed
controlled flexion and extension of the cervical vertebral column.
Nine Doberman Pinschers with disc-associated CSM (DA-CSM) and 12
dogs with osseous-associated CSM (OA-CSM) were prospectively
studied. An MRI was performed with the cervical vertebral column
positioned in neutral, traction (DA-CSM only), flexion, and
extension. Morphologic and morphometric assessments comparing
neutral, flexion and extension were then performed. In dogs with
DA-CSM, flexion was associated with improvement or resolution of
spinal cord compression and extension caused worsening of
compressions. Extension also identified new compressive lesions and
was significantly associated with dorsal and ventral compression at
C5-C6 (p=0.021) and C6-C7 (p=0.031). In dogs with OA-CSM, extension
identified compressions that were not present with standard
positioning, especially at C4-C5 (p = 0.02). Neurologic
deterioration did not occur in the patient population evaluated
here. We concluded that kMRI can be safely performed in dogs with
DA-CSM and OA-CSM. Specifically, imaging in extension may reveal
sites of spinal cord compression that are not present with standard
positioning.

▼ Objective: To determine the potency (percent
analgesia), duration of action (up to four months), and clinical
and histological effects of surgical exposure and intra-neural
injection of 98% dehydrated medical-grade ethyl alcohol compared to
no treatment (negative control), sham operation (surgical control),
or formaldehyde injection (positive control) to decrease
experimentally-induced palmar heel pain in horses. Animals: Six
horses Procedures: The horses were fitted with a custom
pressure-inducing shoe and had outcome measurements for each heel
performed before and after nerve treatments. Outcomes included
induced lameness grade and vertical peak force with pressure
applied to each heel, thermal and touch sensation for each heel,
and pastern circumference. Outcomes were followed serially for 112
days when nerves were harvested for histology. Results: Alcohol and
formaldehyde reduced all measures of heel pain which progressed
toward return, but persisted over the 112 days of the study
(P<0.05). Pastern circumference was not different for alcohol
than sham treatment, but was greater in formaldehyde than alcohol
or baseline (P<0.05). Histological evaluation showed
preservation of nerve fiber alignment with an intact epineurium,
loss of axons (axon drop out), axon degeneration, fibrosis and
inflammation in alcohol- and formaldehyde-injected nerves compared
to control nerves. Formaldehyde injection induced greater fibrosis
and inflammation than alcohol. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance:
Alcohol injection induced effective neural blockade for months with
evidence that nerve structure and function could return.
Formaldehyde injection showed no advantage over alcohol and is not
recommended under the conditions of our study due to soft tissue
inflammation.

▼ Human beings depend on a set of benefits that emerge from functioning ecosystems, termed Ecosystem Services (ES), and make decisions in everyday life that affect these ES. Recent advancements in science have led to an increasingly sophisticated understanding of ES and how they can be used to inform environmental decision-making. Following suit, US science education policy makers have highlighted the importance of learning about ES in the most recent national standards: the Next Generation Science Standards. While recognized as important, science education research aimed at empirically exploring what it is one should know about ES, in order to be scientifically literate, is only beginning to gain traction. This dissertation research provides empirical evidence toward this aim. Using a set of Delphi studies, which involve iterative survey of experts in a domain until a consensus is reached, the research described in this dissertation first identified: (a) a definition of ES for non-academic audiences, (b) a set of big ideas important to connecting ES to everyday environmental decisions, (c) important questions that citizens can ask when evaluating claims and making decisions about ES, and (d) practices that citizens can use to find scientific resources (e.g. evidence, testimony) that can help them find answers to these important questions. These Delphi Studies provided an academic expert-based postulate regarding what one needs to know about ES in order to be scientifically literate, however, research on scientific literacy cannot rely solely on the views of experts. Following a model for empirical research on scientific literacy proposed by Feinstein, I compliment these expert-based descriptions with research on authentic engagement with science to see if the knowledge postulated as important, is actually used in productive ways. The results of this research underscore the importance of the NRC Crosscutting concepts for scientific literacy writ large, provide a justification for including ES under multiple Disciplinary Core Ideas, emphasize the importance of knowledge about the nature of scientific evidence, and accentuate a need to clarify how citizens can use science practices in decision-making roles. Implications for research on scientific literacy writ large and classroom instruction on ES are discussed.

▼ This study assessed the guidance and counselling services in senior secondary
schools in Ohangwena region with the view to determine the teacher counsellors’
views on the factors impacting the implementation of guidance and counselling
services. Literature shows that guidance and counselling plays a vital role in
preventing educational, emotional, social, personal and other problems among
learners. It was therefore important to the researcher to determine teacher
counsellors’ views on factors impacting the successful implementation of guidance
and counseling in schools. The study was quantitative in nature and a non-experimental design that involved a survey was used. The population of the study comprised the teacher counsellors in all the senior secondary schools in Ohangwena region. Data were collected using questionnaires which were administered to a sample of twenty six (26) teacher counsellors. Teacher counsellors were purposively sampled. The data was analysed by use of descriptive statistics using The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).
The study revealed that teacher counsellors viewed inadequate training in SGC, high teaching loads and time constraints, lack of support given to teacher counsellors and lack of resources and facilities as some of the factors impacting the successful implementation of SGC. The study also revealed that some biographical variables (i.e. age, qualifications, teaching experience, counselling experience, training in guidance and counselling, and type of training they received) significantly influenced the way teacher counsellors viewed SGC. Furthermore, teacher counsellors would need to be supported by parents, teachers, school principals, Inspectors of Education, Regional School Counsellors, and other
teacher counsellors, in order to improve SCG. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended that the training of teacher counsellors in school guidance and counselling be improved, reduced work load, better resources and facilities and for teacher counsellors to be supported in order for guidance and counselling to be successfully implemented in schools.

▼ This thesis is a response to the frustrations of
myself and colleagues engaged in comparable roles, in the practical
delivery of new service innovations in the context of established
service firms. Our consistent experiences as managers of new
service development teams, when bringing these service innovations
to market, especially those that are IT mediated, are that they are
frequently late, over budget and/or have reduced scope. Critical
reflection on my experiences and those of my colleagues at nine
established service firms, combined with concepts from the
literature, has contributed to the identification of a category of
service firms, termed dependable service firms, and associated
proposals to manage innovation in the context of firms providing
dependable
services. Dependable
services enable customers to
achieve their desired ends but also enable those customers to
coordinate their activities in time and space. Dependability is
central to customers value-in-use. This means that the on-going
provision of existing
services is the central pre-occupation of
these firms, which hinders their ability to innovate, which is a
second order priority. The nature and motivations of dependable
service providers are described, and managerial how to proposals
are offered to more effectively manage new service innovation in
the context of these firms.

▼ The overall aim of this study is to investigate the use of community libraries in Namibia. The study aims at finding solid data on the actual use of community libraries, who needs them and what do they need them for. Main questions addressed in the study are as follows: (i) Who are the users of Namibian community libraries? (ii) For which purposes do people use the services provided by community libraries? (iii) In which ways do the users´ demographic characteristics relate to the purposes of use? (iv) Which are the main usage patterns of the community libraries? (v) What are the needs for the development of the services of community libraries based on the suggestions and problems experienced by library users?
The study was carried out as a survey in three community libraries in North-Central Namibia. The libraries were chosen to represent community libraries in the previously disadvantages regions to represent the majority of Namibian population and provide information on emerging user needs and usage patterns. The empirical data on demographic characteristics of all users and services used in those libraries was gathered during six days in October-November 2003. The data was analysed using frequencies of variables and a their cross tabulation.
The working hypothesis of the study was that Namibian community libraries have changed from the pre-independence Anglo-American model of recreational and cultural institution and lending library mainly used for leisure reading and borrowing out fiction and hobby type of books, to a primarily educational institution. The hypothesis was clearly supported by the data on the users and usage patterns from the case libraries. Almost 70% of the users in the three case libraries were learners and students. Community library was mainly used as a learning place, to study and do school work in the library. The other main functions used by varied groups of the community were photocopy service and public ICT access. Although lending continued to be a way of using the library it was not the major usage pattern. 64% of users did not borrow books and only 1.5% of clients used the library only for borrowing. The main usage pattern of the community library as a study place and the most popular resources: textbooks, photocopy service and public ICT access, were interpreted to respond to important educational and socio-economic needs of Namibian communities.

▼ Data mining applications and
services are becoming increasingly important, especially in this age of Big Data. QoS (Quality of Service) properties such as latency, reliability, response time of such
services can vary based on the characteristics of the dataset being processed. The existing QoS-based web service selection methods are not adequate for ranking these types of
services since they do not consider these dataset characteristics. We have proposed a service selection methodology to predict the QoS values for data analytic
services based on the attributes of the dataset involved by incorporating a meta-learning approach. Subsequently we rank the
services according to the predicted QoS values. The outcome of our experiments proves the effectiveness of this approach with an improvement of above 20% in service ranking when compared to the traditional QoS selection approach.

▼ The concept of ecosystem
services broadens perspectives on nature to include
not only intrinsic value but also the utilitarian value it provides to society. Viewing
nature through this lens informs our understanding of how particular ecological
processes benefit different actors. In this research, I examine how water utilities in the
United States are beginning to recognize the economic value of functioning
ecosystems that were previously ignored or taken for granted. In an effort to protect
or restore valuable ecosystem
services, many utilities are now developing payments
for ecosystem
services (PES) programs to link water customers to conservation
efforts upstream through direct financial investments. Despite the increasing number
of water utility PES programs, there is a lack of information regarding how these
programs work, the social and environmental conditions necessary for their
emergence, and how they fit into the context of their larger social-ecological systems
(SES). This research addresses this gap.
To characterize the diversity of water utility PES programs, I developed a
working typology highlighting similarities and differences among 37 identified
programs covering source water protection, fire risk mitigation, point source pollution
offsets, voluntary customer offsets, and hydropower mitigation. Results from my
research also show that the concept of PES has largely been promoted as a market-like
approach to conservation that emphasizes economic efficiency through reduced
transaction costs, perfect information, and the minimization of the role of state actors.
While this framing of PES is widely shared, I argue that it does not capture the
diversity of social and environmental settings in which PES programs are embedded.
Instead, I demonstrate that PES initiatives often emerge in response to a variety of
institutional needs, poorly understood environmental drivers, and involve a diversity
of public and private actors. As a result, I argue that PES is better viewed through a
broader "collective action" lens and suggest that those developing PES initiatives
should expand from a focus on the market logic of efficiency to approaches that
promote social capital and the collaborative capacity of community groups in the
implementation of PES programs.
I also argue that a more integrative conceptualization of PES – through
synthesis with the SES framework – is necessary to take into account the broader
social and ecological landscapes in which PES initiatives are embedded. The SES
framework can provide insight into the multitude of factors that influence PES and
facilitate the integration of knowledge from diverse disciplinary perspectives by
providing a common language and consistency in the variables considered in
analyses. To this end, I present an initial effort in the development of a taxonomy of
core variables relevant to analyzing and understanding PES. I feel this adapted SES
framework will help scholars move beyond academic debates and towards a shared

▼ Primary health care is pivotal to the growth of a country’s economy by improving the health and social well-being of its people. Several efforts and structures have been put in place to ensure that all South Africans have access to health facilities as well as representation in the health facilities, just as community members are represented in schools and other boards. Health committees play an important and integral role to the community and health facilities by being mediators between the community and the health facility (Padarath &Friedman, 2008). The Eastern Cape is one of the provinces that has health committees that are fully functional and a number of factors including the collaboration of key stakeholders (facility managers, community members, clinic staff and ward councillors) contribute to why health committees have been operational in the Eastern Cape(Padarath &Friedman , 2008). It becomes critical to investigate factors that sustain health committees in Nelson Mandela Bay. This chapter introduces the research topic, purpose, rationale and background as well as the objectives of the study. The research focuses on investigating the sustainability of health committees in Nelson Mandela Bay therefore making it critical to define the term sustainability. Conceptualizing sustainability has been ongoing with various definitions from learners from different backgrounds. Sustainability as a concept emanates from different dimensions namely, scientific, political economic and indigenous dimension. Sustainability has been described by scholars as a state of well-being and as an evolutionary process (Dimitrov, 2010). Sustainability is regarded as a state of well being whereby humans can live in co-exist with the natural world, this definition takes into account issues to do with good health , cultural identity, personal security and freedom of choice. Sustainability- well being brings out a lot of questions and problems in identifying the fundamentals values of sustainability. It is continuously debated amoung scholars if sustainability of well being pertains only to the health conditions of human beings or it should be extended to others (Dimitrov, 2010) “Sustainability that is restricted to the well being of humans is related to Notions about security of individual/community health together with financial security together with financial security; the planet is regarded as a resource to further this end (Dimitrov, 2010:4) If however well-being definitions of sustainability are construed to preserving and protecting the environment as well as biodiversity of other species (plant and animals) then the normative definitions of sustainability from this viewpoint are tendered with notions of global Environmental stability, ecological considerations and security of ecosystems” (Dimitrov, 2010:4).

▼ The fierce competition among service providers and the on-going growth in demand for services, due to demographic changes and advancements in technology, makes the need for improving the productivity in services more relevant than ever before. Traditionally, service companies have been looking at their manufacturing counterparts for sources of inspiration to improve operations. As such, the undisputed success of the Toyota Motor Company has led academic researchers and business practitioners to study the Toyota Production System and the associated movement of Lean Manufacturing in an effort to decode it and transfer its concepts, strategies and methods to different environments. Today, almost twenty years after the introduction of the term Lean Service by Bowen and Youngdahl (1998), there are still questions regarding its applicability. In this dissertation we shed light in aspects of the following research question: to what extent some important LM concepts can be adopted and adapted in service environments? To do so, we first examine the differences between manufacturing and services and the underlying challenges. Subsequently, we review the historical evolution of lean manufacturing its key components, impact and the aspects that have made this approach revolutionary. Finally, we critically review three distinct streams of lean in services. In particular, we review a) the relevance, from the conceptual standpoint, of the lean concepts in services (applicability), b) the lean practices that have been implemented in various service sectors and functions (transferability), and c) the conditions to continuously improve lean practices in service organizations (sustainability). Utilizing the above analysis, we identify ten gaps that are deemed pivotal for generalizing lean in services and focus on four of them. In particular, we clarify the essence and limitations of lean in services, we provide a universal framework for classifying services, and examine the applicability of two of the most well-known lean concepts (quality at the source and cellular work structure) in a highly complex service environment.Overall, our findings indicate that these two concepts are relevant for services under certain conditions. In particular, we have developed simulation models in financial services and used them to test these concepts under various conditions. The insights gained from the current research are relevant to other information and people-intensive service environments, in which the main objects of transformation are information, customers and employees. The results suggest that by addressing quality issues at source and by using a cellular arrangement in a service setting may have significant positive effects on system performance, if some conditions apply. The results also show that service managers in addition to the challenges faced in manufacturing (e.g. trade-offs between different layouts), they have to address unique challenges driven primarily by customers participating in service production and the propensity of…

In recent years South African travel industry has been facing ferocious competition. The competitive business environment has driven managers to consider the performance of their organizations in order to increase market share, or in other words, improve the quality of service as the ultimate weapon for achieving high performance. The delivery of service quality to customers requires a congruence in the perceptions of the customers and the providers of service. The aim of this research is to examine if there are any statistically significant differences in the perceptions of received service between the three major groups i.e. the customers, the staff and the managers of travel agencies. The information was gathered by means of a mail survey. A questionnaire was developed (based on SERVQUAL), where all possible answers of respondents were pre-specified and standardized, in order to ease the comparison of responses. The findings of the research revealed significant differences between the perceptions of customers and staff and that of managers and staff of the travel agencies but not between managers and customers. Of most concern, were the differences in the perceptions of the dimension of reliability, which was considered the most important dimension by the customers. Therefore, the managers of travel agencies in South Africa need to devise strategies and seriously consider the issue of internal marketing to achieve this alignment in the perceptions

The importance of service is constantly increasing in most economies (Gronroos 1988), and service is becoming exceedingly vital to success for manufacturers of goods as well. Service is very frequently referred to as the definitive competitive tool (Kyj 1987; Coppett 1988) and some writers (Quinn and Gagnon 1986) have warned that services if not managed suitably could follow manufacturing into decline, as inattention to quality, emphasis on scale economies, and short-term orientation predominates. Indeed Levitt (1981) has questioned the services-goods dichotomy, and states that all products, whether they are services or goods, possess a certain amount of intangibility perhaps the fundamental difference between the two referred to by most other writers. It is this intangibility which is seen as being the fundamental distinguishing characteristic of services.

▼ The aim of the study was to investigate the provision and accessibility of agricultural information to farmers in Mweembeshi Settlement Village a Farming Block in Kafue District. The objectives of the study were establish the agricultural information needs and sources of farmers as well as identifying the gaps smallholders encounter in obtaining agricultural information. The study population consisted of all 300 farmers located within the area. The findings of the study revealed that all farmers need information to do farming. The most vital source of the information was ZARI, and extension officers. However, smallholders indicated that they experienced gaps in obtaining information relating to credit, and loans availability, markets information and information on methods of farming. The study recommends that there should be a strengthening link between research and extension as the main source of agricultural information and that other stakeholders, such as Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, as well as among the extension wing, research, NGOs work in handy to develop information systems to support the activities of smallholders.

▼ Introduction: L’organisation des réseaux de
Méthode : Un consensus a
RC = 0.35 [0.15-0.85], et 4) hématome sous-dural, épidural ou
hémorragie intracérébrale, RC = 0.53 [0.36-0.79]. Conclusion : Des
Introduction: Trauma care systems have improved the
survival of major trauma patients. However, the current literature
is unclear about the indications for these patients to be

consensus criteria for the transfer of major trauma, 2) to assess
the association between the presence of criteria and severity of
cases and 3) to demonstrate the predictive validity of the criteria
for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: A Delphi
consultation with experts led to a multidisciplinary consensus
criteria for transfer to tertiary centers. The panel was composed

Conclusion : Un investissement dans les ressources
humaines et l'accessibilité aux services permet aux hôpitaux
régionaux de la RDP Lao de devenir fonctionnels et performants.
Mots clés : soins obstétricaux, coopération luxembourgeoise,

Problematic: Like many developing countries, the
quality of services provided in Lao hospitals, especially in remote
regions, is often criticized. It is therefore interesting to
examine "successful" cases hospitals that are considered by many as
models for the rest country. Such is the case of two hospitals in
the province of Vientiane, whose evolution was supported by
Luxembourg Cooperation. Methodology: This study is a multiple case
study took place in two hospitals (Maria Teresa and Vang Vieng). It
aimed to study organizational factors associated with the
perception by health workers and pregnant or postpartum, of the
performance of obstetric care. Individual interviews, based on
themes derived from the conceptual framework of the study were
performed. Results: Analyses of the results show a great
satisfaction with the services offered by both, hospital workers
and users, even if some expected services are not routinely
offered. The main factors associated with the…

▼ The turn of the millennium witnessed the uptake and proliferation of mobile technology in developing regions. This occurrence has provided a medium for mobile telecommunication vendors within the region to create and offer
services that are now accessible across socio-economic classes. A notable case of a widely adopted mobile technology-enabled service in the developing world is a mobile money service in Kenya called M-pesa. Since its inception, M-pesa has witnessed a mass adoption which has generally been attributed to prior lack of access by majority of individuals' in the country to affordable regulated financial
services. M-pesa's presence has now been anticipated to afford a larger population the initial opportunity to harness economic benefits such as: increase money circulation, increase employment opportunities, facilitate social capital accumulation, facilitate savings, and promote financial autonomy, amongst others. Also, M-pesa based transactions in Kenya are reported to exceed those of western union globally. Whilst M-pesa presently vaunts large user adoption numbers, it is the first of its kind in the region to amass such achievement. Further, historically: products and
services of similar nature to M-pesa have been unsustainable. A case of M-pesa's demise would have dire implication for the Kenyan economy and 30% of the households in the country that rely on it for remittances. To understand this phenomenon, extant studies have examined the drivers of adoption of this service but have slacked in subsequent investigations to understand user continuance with the service. As such, the information systems literature cautions that initial adoption of technology, although crucial, does not guarantee sustained use. Therefore it is imperative to investigate drivers of continuance. In general, extant research has not focused on investigations of user continuance intention in Africa. In response, this thesis presents an African based study on the determinants of user continuance intention towards M-pesa. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to i) identify and discuss factors from the literature that are most likely to influence user continuance intention towards M-pesa, (ii) develop a research model that is grounded in theory, (iii) test the model within the sample context to identify the antecedents and determinants of user continuance intention towards M-pesa in Kenya. A broad, critical review of the relevant literature provided basis for hypothesized relationships between the identified factors. A formal survey of users of M-pesa in Kenya comprised the phase of data collection and resulted in a usable data set of (n=434). The data collected from the respondents within Kenya was relied upon to test the hypotheses. The survey instrument used to measure the study's constructs was developed via a process of literature review, expert pre-testing, pilot testing, and statistical validation. Partial Least Square and Artificial Neural Network analyses were used to examine the study's measurement and…
