▼ Over the last decade, personal desktops have faced the problem of information overload due to increasing computational power, easy access to the Web and cheap data storage. Moreover, an increasing number of diverse end-user desktop applications have led to the problem of information fragmentation. Each desktop application has its own data, unaware of related and relevant data in other applications. In other words, personal desktops face a lack of interoperability of data managed by different applications. Recent years have also seen the rapid growth of shared data in online social network communities. Desktop users have been publishing extensively data from their personal desktops to different social-networking sites. In the current data- publishing scenario, desktop data that is published to a social network becomes completely disconnected from desktops they originate. Moreover, there is no interoperability between the same desktop data published to different social networks. A core idea of a Social Semantic Desktop vision is to enable semantic integration and data interoperability on the personal desktop by applying Semantic Web technologies, and to connect data from personal desktops into a unified information space of social network communities. This thesis introduces a new form of documents, called Semantic Documents, which attempts to bring desktop documents closer to this vision and provides a software architecture, namely Semantic Document Architecture (SDArch) that supports semantic documents. Semantic documents enable unique identification, semantic annotation, and semantic linking of fine-grained units of documents’ data. Semantic links can be established between the semantically related document data units, whether they are stored on the same personal desktop or shared within social networks. Therefore, semantic documents integrate data of desktop documents into a unified desktop information space as well as fill the gap between the desktop information space and the information space of the social network communities. New processes such as the semantic document search and navigation, which are enabled by such integrated desktop information space, improve the effectiveness and efficiency of desktop users in carrying out their daily tasks. The thesis’s main contributions are the development of the Semantic Document Model (SDM) that describes semantic documents and the design of SDArch that provides solutions for the semantic document repository, services that support semantic documents related processes, and tools that enable desktop users to interact with semantic documents. Additionally, in order to validate the thesis I implemented the SDArch prototype, which is a fully-functional software providing the implementation of all the intended SDArch functionalities. The thesis is validated by two evaluation studies: i) the experimental evaluation of the information retrieval in integrated collections of semantic documents, and ii) the usability evaluation of the user effectiveness, efficiency, and… Advisors/Committee Members: Mehdi (Dir.).

▼ The widely accepted standards of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) have changed the way many organisations conduct their everyday business. The significant popularity of mobile devices has seen a rapid increase in the rate of mobile technology enhancements, which have become widely used for communication, as well as conducting everyday tasks. An increased requirement in many businesses is for staff not to be tied down to the office. Consequently, mobile devices play an important role in achieving the mobility and information access that people desire. Due to the popularity and increasing use of SOA and mobile devices, Mobile Service-Oriented Architecture (Mobile SOA) has become a new industry catch-phrase. Many challenges, however, exist within the Mobile SOA environment. These issues include limitations on mobile devices, such as a reduced screen size, lack of processing power, insufficient processing memory, limited battery life, poor storage capacity, unreliable network connections, limited bandwidth available and high transfer costs. This research aimed to provide an elegant solution to the issues of a mobile device, which hinders the performance of Mobile SOA. The main objective of this research was to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Mobile SOA. In order to achieve this goal, a framework was proposed, which supported intelligent compression of files used within a Web Service. The proposed framework provided a set of guidelines that facilitate the quick development of a system. A proof-of-concept prototype was developed, based on these guidelines and the framework design principles. The prototype provided practical evidence of the effectiveness of implementing a system based on the proposed framework. An analytical evaluation was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the prototype within the Mobile SOA environment. A performance evaluation was conducted to determine efficiency it provides. Additionally, the performance evaluation highlighted the decrease in file transfer time, as well as the significant reduction in transfer costs. The analytical and performance evaluations demonstrated that the prototype optimises the effectiveness and efficiency of Mobile SOA. The framework could, thus, be used to facilitate efficient file transfer between a Server and (Mobile) Client.

Arek Ltd. provides IT services to pension insurance sector of Finland. The earnings logic of Arek is based on SaaS business model. The technological environment in Arek is heterogeneous and technology landscape consists from both modern J2EE and legacy mainframe systems. Oldest of the systems were built in 1980's and the newest ones are built couple of years ago. During the years, the architecture of these systems was documented in great variety, with different notations and abstraction levels. In 2010 Arek approved a project to improve architecture documentation practices and maintenance processes. This document is a thesis report formed from that project. The research strategy used in this study was based on action research and this report was formed by using a narrative change accounting method. The theoretic background of this study consisted from theories of business process management, architecture governance, software as a service business model, service oriented architecture, enterprise architecture and software architecture. Different stakeholder groups took part in project by attending workshops and interviews. A total of 25 semi structured interviews were made during this thesis. As a result this project created a new praxis to document and maintain systems architecture in Arek. At 2011, Arek decided to start a project to rollout the new practices throughout the enterprise.

Arek Oy rakentaa ja ylläpitää SaaS liiketoimintamalliin pohjaten tietojärjestelmäpalveluita Suomen työeläkesektorille. Arekin tietojärjestelmien taustalla oleva tekninen ympäristö on hyvin heterogeeninen koostuen monen eri aikakauden teknologioista. Käytännössä palveluiden tuottamiseen käytetty järjestelmäkanta koostuu sekä moderneista J2EE pohjaisista järjestelmistä että perinteisistä keskuskonejärjestelmistä. Vanhimmat järjestelmistä ovat peräisin 1980-luvulta ja uusimmat 2000-luvulta. Kokonaisuutena näiden tietojärjestelmien arkkitehtuuri oli dokumentoitu hyvin vaihtelevasti eri kuvaustavoilla sekä abstraktiotasoin. Vuonna 2010 Arek hyväksyi projektin jonka tehtävänä oli pohtia kuinka arkkitehtuuridokumentaatiota voitaisiin parantaa ja yhdenmukaistaa. Tämän lisäksi projektin tehtävänä oli kehittää arkkitehtuuridokumentaation ylläpitoprosesseja. Tässä opinnäytetyöraportissa kuvataan tuon projektin kulkua ja lopputuloksia. Opinnäytetyössä käytettiin toimintatutkimusta tutkimusstrategiana ja raportin teossa hyödynnettiin kertovan muutosselonteon menetelmää. Työn teoreettinen tausta muodostui liiketoimintaprosessien hallinnan, arkkitehtuurin hallintamallin, SaaS liiketoimintamallin, palvelukeskeisen arkkitehtuurin, yritysarkkitehtuurin ja järjestelmäarkkitehtuurin teorioista. ▼ Service Oriented Computing (SOC) provides a framework for the realization of loosely couple service oriented applications (SOA). Web services are central to the concept of SOC. They possess several benefits which are useful to SOA e.g. encapsulation, loose coupling and reusability. Using web services, an application can embed its functionalities within the business process of other applications. This is made possible through web service composition. Web services are composed to provide more complex functions for a service consumer in the form of a value added composite service. Currently, research into how web services can be composed to yield QoS (Quality of Service) optimal composite service has gathered significant attention. However, the number and services has risen thereby increasing the number of possible service combinations and also amplifying the impact of network on composite service performance. QoS-based service composition in the cloud addresses two important sub-problems; Prediction of network performance between web service nodes in the cloud, and QoS-based web service composition. We model the former problem as a prediction problem while the later problem is modelled as an NP-Hard optimization problem due to its complex, constrained and multi-objective nature. This thesis contributed to the prediction problem by presenting a novel learning automata-based non-negative matrix factorization algorithm (LANMF) for estimating end-to-end network latency of a composition in the cloud. LANMF encodes each web service node as an automaton which allows v it to estimate its network coordinate in such a way that prediction error is minimized. Experiments indicate that LANMF is more accurate than current approaches. The thesis also contributed to the QoS-based service composition problem by proposing four evolutionary algorithms; a network-aware genetic algorithm (INSGA), a K-mean based genetic algorithm (KNSGA), a multi-population particle swarm optimization algorithm (NMPSO), and a non-dominated sort fruit fly algorithm (NFOA). The algorithms adopt different evolutionary strategies coupled with LANMF method to search for low latency and QoSoptimal solutions. They also employ a unique constraint handling method used to penalize solutions that violate user specified QoS constraints. Experiments demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of the algorithms in a large scale environment. Also the algorithms outperform other evolutionary algorithms in terms of optimality and calability. In addition, the thesis contributed to QoS-based web service composition in a dynamic environment. This is motivated by the ineffectiveness of the four proposed algorithms in a dynamically hanging QoS environment such as a real world scenario. Hence, we propose a new cellular automata-based genetic algorithm (CellGA) to address the issue. Experimental results show the effectiveness of CellGA in solving QoS-based service composition in dynamic QoS environment.

Cloud computing has been one of the most important topics in Information Technology which aims to assure scalable and reliable on-demand services over the Internet. The expansion of the application scope of cloud services would require cooperation between clouds from different providers that have heterogeneous functionalities. This collaboration between different cloud vendors can provide better Quality of Services (QoS) at the lower price. However, current cloud systems have been developed without concerns of seamless cloud interconnection, and actually they do not support intercloud interoperability to enable collaboration between cloud service providers. Hence, the PhD work is motivated to address interoperability issue between cloud providers as a challenging research objective. This thesis proposes a new framework which supports inter-cloud interoperability in a heterogeneous computing resource cloud environment with the goal of dispatching the workload to the most effective clouds available at runtime. Analysing different methodologies that have been applied to resolve various problem scenarios related to interoperability lead us to exploit Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) methods as appropriate approaches for our inter-cloud framework. Moreover, since distributing the operations in a cloud-based environment is a nondeterministic polynomial time (NP-complete) problem, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based job scheduler proposed as a part of interoperability framework, offering workload migration with the best performance at the least cost. A new Agent Based Simulation (ABS) approach is proposed to model the inter-cloud environment with three types of agents: Cloud Subscriber agent, Cloud Provider agent, and Job agent. The ABS model is proposed to evaluate the proposed framework.

In dieser Arbeit wird ein neuartiger Ansatz zum Monitoring von Prozessen präsentiert. Er basiert auf der Idee des Complex Event Processing (CEP) und soll nahezu Echtzeitmonitoring von Prozessen und Prozessinstanzen ermöglichen. Der große Unterschied zu den bisherigen Ansätzen ist, dass es nicht nötig ist Prozesse in eine Ablaufumgebung, wie ein Workflow-Managementsystem (WfMS) zu integrieren, um sie durchgängig überwachen zu können. Durch den Wegfall von aufwändigen WfMS-Projekten und starren Prozessen gewinnen Unternehmen und deren IT-Architekturen deutlich an Flexibiltät. Der Verzicht auf eine integrierte, steuernde Workflow-Engine und die darin fest verdrahteten Prozesse bringt aber auch viele neue Herausforderungen mit sich. Vor allem die Verteilung der Services und die Verwendung in unterschiedlichen Kontexten, sowie die Abbildung der nurmehr implizit vorhandenen Prozesse sind die Hauptprobleme denen sich dieser Monitoringansatz stellen muss. Die Anwendbarkeit des oben vorgestellten Ansatzes wird im Rahmen dieser Arbeit untersucht. Basis ist eine fundierte Analyse der Probleme und Herausforderungen im Prozessmonitoring. Gemeinsam mit einer Analyse verwandter Monitoring-Tools und verbreiteter Monitoring-Ansätzen bildet sie den Grundstock für die Definition der Anforderungen an ein Prozessmonitoring in verteilten Architekturen. Das Konzept des Complex Event Processing nach David Luckham verspricht viele der definierten Anforderungen abzudecken. Mit CEP als Basis und den vielversprechendsten Architekturideen aus den verschiedenen existierenden Ansätzen wird eine Architektur definiert, die Monitoring von Prozessen ermöglicht. Zum Test der Tauglichkeit des neu entwickelten Ansatzes wird ein Prototyp entwickelt und in verschiedenen Szenarios getestet. Diese Szenarios basieren auf einem Energiehandelsprozess und werden entsprechend der anfangs definierten Anforderungen modelliert. Die Ergebnisse sind sehr vielversprechend. Der entwickelte Ansatz kann genutzt werden um in serviceorientierten Architekturen Prozessmonitoring zu betreiben. Alle aufgestellten Monitoring-Szenarios konnten mit Hilfe des Prototypen umgesetzt werden. Wie erwartet war die größte Herausforderung das Monitoring von Prozessinstanzen, speziell in Verbindung mit zusammengesetzten Services. Hier stieg die Komplexität der Regeln sehr stark an. Dieser Teil ist auch ein wichtiges Gebiet für weiterführende Forschungen. Eine Vereinfachung der Konfiguration und der Regeln, würde die Arbeit deutlich vereinfachen.

In this thesis a novel approach to process monitoring will be presented. This approach leverages the concept of complex event processing (CEP) for near real time monitoring of processes and process instances. ▼ Service-oriented architectures (SOA) are being adopted by organisations in order to integrate disparate computational assets. A major hurdle they face is the decision on how to integrate the UI in an SOA. In addition, technological advances have allowed complex applications and complex user interfaces (UIs) to be realised and the increase in accessibility to computers enables a diverse population of users with different characteristics, preferences and needs to use these complex computer applications. Adaptive user interfaces (AUIs) have been proposed as a solution to cater for the differences in user traits by adapting the UI to meet the diverse needs of users. AUIs have, however, traditionally been developed using client/server architectures This research, therefore, set out to investigate how to develop an AUI using a service-oriented architecture (SOA). In order to successfully achieve the goal of this research, literature concerning SOAs was investigated to gain an understanding of SOAs. A literature review of AUIs was also undertaken to gain an understanding of AUIs. A model-based approach was used to develop a model for UI adaptation using knowledge gained in the literature reviews. The model generates different UIs depending on various users‘ inferred level of expertise. The model describes the interaction between AUI services that use design-time documents and run-time user-interaction to adapt the UI. A prototype of the model was implemented and evaluated using an evolution strategy devised to assess different aspects of the research. The evaluation strategy proved the following: The service components of the prototype adhere to SOA design principles; The implementation was effective based on software engineering metrics; and, The implementation was usable and did not negatively affect the performance of users. The successful implementation of the prototype provides evidence that the design of AUIs using SOA is feasible. This dissertation therefore makes a contribution to the development of AUIs using SOAs. The model could be used to provide UI adaptation for business software applications.

Pametni pretvarač je uređaj koji pored pretvaračkih elemenata i pratećih kola za obradu signala, poseduje i lokalnu inteligenciju i mogućnost komunikacije. Veliki broj načina na koji se takav uređaj može realizovati, dovodi do nekompatibilnosti i niskog nivoa interoperabilnosti između uređaja različitih proizvođača, zbog čega je uveden standardni model pametnog pretvarača definisan familijom standarda IEEE 1451. Dodatno unapređenje interoperabilnosti se postiže nadogradnjom standarda, kroz uvođenje posebnih Web servisa za komunikaciju sa pametnim pretvaračima. Analiza postojećih rešenja je pokazala da i pored uvedene standardizacije ne postoji opšti model mrežne konfiguracije i komunikacije. Zbog toga je u ovoj tezi razvijen model implementacije koji omogućava uniformnu konfiguraciju svih mrežnih čvorova od strane centralnog serverskog čvora i koji uvodi dva obrasca komunikacije: (i) komunikaciju posredstvom centralnog servera i (ii) obrazac zasnovan na upotrebi servisnih agenata. Servisni agenti su uvedeni kao aktivne komponente, zadužene za transfer podataka između pasivnih komponenata sistema kojima se pristupa putem servisnih interfejsa. Servisni agenti se mogu nalaziti na bilo kom mrežnom čvoru, čime se eliminiše centralizovani model komunikacije i omogućava proizvoljna mrežna topologija. Za potrebe integracije entiteta koji nisu konkretni pametni pretvarači, poput algoritama za obradu podataka i ulazno/izlaznih uređaja, predstavljen je koncept virtuelnog pretvaračkog modula. Dati mrežni entiteti u formi virtuelnog pretvaračkog modula se na nivou interfejsa vide isto kao i konkretni pametni pretvarači, što omogućava uniforman pristup od strane centralnog menadžerskog čvora i servisnih agenata. Verifikacija modela je data putem studija slučaja mreža za osmatranje parametara okoline, procenu uslova za pojavu leda, predikciju signala upotrebom neuralnih mreža i kontrole temperature sušare. Zaključeno je da predloženi model ima praktičnu primenu, pri čemu je pokriven širok spektar mreža pametnih pretvarača, podržava upotrebu i drugih funkcionalnosti koje nisu date IEEE 1451 specifikacijom i različite komunikacione protokole, što ga čini pogodnim za dalji razvoj servisno orijentisanih mreža pametnih pretvarača. ▼ Service-oriented architecture (SOA) governance has been identified as the most important factor affecting the outcome of SOA within organisations. However, authors have failed to explain how organisations should govern specific aspects of its SOA, leaving a gap in the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate established SOA governance mechanisms in order to explain implications of governance in a SOA context. The research question of the study was to identify which SOA governance mechanisms do or do not provide support for different constituents of SOA. The study also contained three sub-questions; (i) Is there a difference between how SOA governance mechanisms support technical vs. non technical constituents of SOA? (ii) Is there any SOA governance mechanism that is more important than others? (iii) Is there a relation between the SOA governance mechanisms? The study was conducted using theories related to SOA and SOA governance. We identified the most academically accepted SOA governance mechanisms to test their support for different constituents of SOA. To get an holistic view of SOA, we used a SOA maturity framework to identify what the constituents of SOA really are. The support of the SOA governance mechanisms were then studied in relation to the different constituents of SOA, through interviews and observations, during a ten week internship at Scania. The results showed that as good as every SOA governance mechanism supports the constituents of SOA, although the level of support varied. In general, we found patterns separating the support for technological and non-technological constituents of SOA. The technological constituents of SOA were to a great extent provided the same support from SOA governance mechanisms, which also was true for the non-technological constituents of SOA. Interestingly, except for one SOA governance mechanism, the technological constituents of SOA and the non-technological obtained different levels of support from governance. The most important SOA governance mechanisms are the creation of standards and policies, having processes to create and enforce policies, processes for education, and establishing SOA skills and training. We can also conclude that there is a relationship between many of the SOA governance mechanisms, and that academics and practitioners therefore have to view SOA governance holistically, rather than independent governance mechanisms.

▼ In this thesis project, a company’s continuously evolved service-oriented software architecture was studied for signs of architectural erosion. The architecture has been continuously developed over some time and the company have experienced a reduction in architectural quality and felt that it no longer fulfilled its design goals and therefore decided to start working on a replacement architecture based on the microservice archi-tectural style. This thesis project therefore aimed to study how the current architectures quality have changed during its evolution, find the causes of these changes in quality, andestimate how the planned microservice migration will effect these changes in quality. This study was performed in three steps. First, a suite of suitable quality metrics where gathered based on the stated architectural design goals and what information can be ex-tracted from the history of the implemented architecture. A tool was developed to model the architecture and to gather the quality metrics from the current architecture and how ithas changed over one year’s worth of development and evolution. Secondly, the causes ofthese changes in architectural quality was investigated through developer interviews with a wide range of developers that had worked on the architecture and the web application that it provides the structure for. The interviews focused on the topics of architectural knowledge, what consideration is taken to its design during component development, maintenance of existing components and architecture, as well as questions regardingspecific components and anomalies. Thirdly and finally, the migration to a microserviceand its effects on the quality of the current architecture is estimated through performing microservice reengineering on the model used to evaluate the current architecture. The tools developed during this thesis allowed for an analysis of the architecture didshow an increase in consistency violations, structural problems and level the of coupling have substantially increased over the version history that the model tracked. It was discov-ered by the developer interviews that some of the causes of this erosion was due to among other reasons an abandonment of some architectural deign decisions, lack of architectural knowledge on certain topics, and none-optimal development conditions and priorities. The microservice reengineering showed how the migration could be used to improve themeasured quality metrics and that a migration alongside some other architectural erosionprevention and repair methods could create an architecture that are more modular and erosion tolerant.
