▼ This thesis investigates the role of serendipity, effectuation, and entrepreneurial marketing in fast-growth entrepreneurial firms. Using a qualitative paradigm, multiple case studies and cross-country approaches, the study aims to explore the interrelationships among these constructs and answer the main research question relating to their contribution to fast growth. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty fast-growth firms in New Zealand and Iran from a range of sectors, and causal mapping method was used to map out the growth trajectory of each firm. Causal maps enable the researcher to find in what manner the firms achieved fast growth and what factors contributed to their growth.
The results suggest that serendipity is a precursor to fast growth and occurs generally at the start of a growth process. Serendipity is likely to take place at any stage of a firm life cycle, but more likely at the early stage of formation, alongside networks, pure luck, perseverance, environment and high-quality products and services. In addition to reviewing the three patterns of serendipity that are well-known in accidental scientific discoveries, we identify and introduce “Entrepreneurial Serendipity” as another distinctive pattern in entrepreneurship, whereby entrepreneurs look for any opportunity to start a business and explore an appropriate opportunity that comes along. Further analyses illustrate that entrepreneurs believe in the occurrence of serendipity in their day-to-day business; however, it indirectly contributes to fast growth mediated by two important elements: effectual thinking and entrepreneurial marketing.
The causal maps demonstrate that the combination of effectuation and entrepreneurial marketing directly and indirectly lead to fast growth. A majority of fast-growth firms start business effectuatively, often with limited resources and relying on whatever available means they possess, but over time, they shift to causation logic with more planning and strategic decisions. Starting from an effectuation base, the participants had an entrepreneurial mindset at the outset and used specific tactics, such as an adapted marketing mix, relying on networks, innovation, ensuring a presence in the market, pro-activeness, and market intelligence through personal observation. These entrepreneurial marketing practices have led to fast growth and were widely employed by entrepreneurs, irrespective of firm size and age.
The thesis sheds some light on how fast-growth firms achieve considerable growth by looking at the relationship of serendipitous opportunity exploration and effectuative exploitation using entrepreneurial marketing. It contributes to the literature on serendipity and its development in entrepreneurship, and identifies serendipitous sources of opportunity in fast growing firms. The study confirms that effectuation logic and entrepreneurial marketing are instruments by which entrepreneurs exploit new opportunities and market products or services. Entrepreneurs from both New Zealand and Iran share…

Fluctuating along user connections, some content succeeds at capturing the attention of a large amount of users and suddenly becomes trending. Understanding trending content and its dynamics is crucial to the explanation of opinion spreading, and to the design of social marketing strategies. While previous research has mostly focused on trending content and on the network structure of individuals in social media, this work complements these studies by exploring in depth the human factors behind the generation of this content. We build upon this analysis to investigate new personalization tools helping individuals to discover interesting social media content. This work contributes to the literature on the following aspects: an in depth analysis on individuals who create trending content in social media that uncovers their distinguishing characteristics; a novel means to identify trending content by relying on the ability of special individuals who create them; a mechanism to build a recommender system to personalize trending content; and techniques to improve the quality of recommendations beyond the core theme of accuracy. Our studies underline the vital role of special users in the creation of trending content in social media. Thanks to such special users and their ``wisdom'', individuals may discover the trending content distilled to their tastes. Our work brings insights in two main research directions - trending content in…

▼ This thesis critically assesses the politics of personalizing algorithms in respect to digital information retrieval. In this thesis the notion of
serendipity is explored and investigated as an approach to contradict the boundaries that are subtly but forcefully applied by algorithmic ‘gatekeepers of information’. The concept that describes an unexpected and coincidental encounter with information containing personal relevance is considered difficult to mediate because of its natural properties of randomness and unexpectedness. Yet, in this thesis it is proposed that mobile media possess specific aspects that lend themselves for facilitating
serendipity. Walter Benjamin’s concept of ‘the flâneur’ is explored to illustrate how mobile media facilitate a connection with the environment, consequently granting the user possibilities to explore his/her surroundings in a casual and undirected fashion. Next, the notion of
serendipity and the related concept of ‘browsing’ are investigated to reconsider the notion of ‘pseudoserendipity’, which is connected to the intent to find a specific piece of relevant information, thus dismissing chance, as a workable concept for technological mediation. These concepts illustrate that the ability to connect with the physical environment, as well as the possibility to structure and visualize information in a comprehensible format, are considered key elements to reconsidering serendipitous discovery as a relevant approach to digital information retrieval. Yet, in spite of the promise of
serendipity, in practice it seems a difficult endeavour to bypass algorithmic influence. A material object analysis of the location-based mobile application Highlight shows that, although technical affordances and design could theoretically enable a user to discover information in a serendipitous fashion, it is the intended or implied uses that designers stimulate through design choices which complicate this. These discoveries may only be achieved through acts of ‘counter’ or ‘critical’ user appropriation. This thesis therefore concludes that the mediation of
serendipity can still be considered a relevant approach to the suggested issues of digital information retrieval. Through the development of mobile devices and functionalities, mediation of serendipitous discoveries seem to be, in part, accomplishable. Yet, because of the overwhelming presence of pervasive algorithms and their result-oriented connotation, mediation remains complicated. Therefore, it is suggested that the emphasis should not lie on the mediation of ‘true’
serendipity but on that of pseudoserendipity moving towards a ‘truer’ form of
serendipity, precisely because of the dominating role algorithms already have in digital information retrieval.

SERENDIPITOUS MENTORSHIP IN MUSIC RECOMMENDER SYSTEMS.

▼ Nowadays the amount of content and products easily available on-line for purchase or fruition is so high that recommender systems represent an important resource for users in order to get suggestions about items (songs, movies, books, news, products in general...) they might like.
For many years, research, in the field of recommender systems focused on improving accuracy, i.e. improving the precision with which the systems predict the rate that a given user would give to a given item.
In the last years, an increasing number of efforts have been directed towards other important aspects such as novelty, diversity and
serendipity of recommendations. In particular, with
serendipity, in this context, we refer to the ability of a recommender system to propose unexpected and liked recommendations.
Serendipity is likely the aspect which has received the least attention and it is the one, in this work, we focus more on.
The aim of this thesis is to propose techniques which can be adopted by recommender system designers in order to increase
serendipity while keeping an acceptable level of precision of the recommendations. We work in the domain of music, which presents a particularly suitable context for trying to propose non-obvious recommendations, mainly due to the lower cost, respect to other domains, of “bad” recommendations (listening to a song a user dislikes is not much time consuming).
The work proposes a collaborative-filtering method to classify artists, based on the Affinity Propagation clustering algorithm and on listening logs as data source. The classification, together with a list of the artists a user likes, is used to detect which musical clusters (called “musical worlds”) the user is not familiar with. A technique to synthetically represent each cluster, based on freely chosen keywords (folksonomy), is also presented.
A novel recommendation method based on gradual exposure and on a variation of the user-based collaborative filtering approach is proposed. The said method exploits the knowledge of the most eclectic users (we decided to call them “mentors”) to choose, from the unfamiliar musical clusters, the ones which are more likely to contain serendipitous music for the active user.
Once a target musical cluster has been chosen, a playlist is created, which starts with songs by artists who tend to be borderline in respect to the user's taste and continues with songs by artists who tend to be, gradually, closer to the most representative artist of the target cluster.
A real music recommendation radio has been developed, implementing the techniques proposed and a traditional top-10 item-based recommender. The radio has been used as a validation test, considering the traditional recommender as a baseline to define which recommendations were expected and which ones were unexpected. The test session suggested that the proposed approach overcomes a method which relies on randomness in terms of a novel measure, called “
serendipity cost” (measured as the total number of disliked songs over total number of…

▼ Playful Tactics introduces a dialogue between Claude Lévi-Strauss’s definition of bricolage (1962) and my own practice. A large part of this catalogue proposes to make visible both this dialogue and the new opportunities arising from it. My research aligns with this theoretical framework, but stands alone by interrogating the metaphor of the bricoleur in the practice of landscape architecture. Bricolages and collages are playful operative modes, tactics I have observed and tested in various contexts. This approach allowed me to understand my practice in a new way, seeing it as a Hortus Ludi (garden-as-laboratory and playful place), while at the same time adding a new meaning to the name of the agency The material in this catalogue repositions the garden typology at the heart of my practice. The garden is viewed as a favourable environment to explore playful and creative modes of engagement within my practice. As a conclusion, the making of a physical garden explored collectively the principle of serendipity and the notion of play, in a new context, have opened up my reflection to new perspectives. Play constitutes a form of resistance to external forces, and refers to a principle of protection that is implicitly or tacitly established either within the agency, or by/for myself. Play refers to a complex system, to tactics that are capable of generating self-regulating dynamics within the creative process.

▼ Giving up a certain amount of control can be healthy, productive, and natural. Nature has an important part to play in our lives, and nature is random even as it obeys natural laws. In the same way, creating ceramic objects requires obedience to the laws of nature even as it benefits from freedom from control. Creation requires a certain amount of letting go of control, allowing nature to take its course, and recognizing when good things happen. I have learned that my most successful pieces emerge when I combine conscious control with serendipity. The work in this show reflects that symbiotic, natural relationship between control and serendipity, and it grew out of my struggles with unrealized expectations. I tend to be a problem solver, sometimes obsessively, and as I've worked through various surprises, challenges, disappointments, and disillusions, I've come to realize that I have little control over life's situations. I have learned to rely on the tender mercy of a greater designer and to value the less-than perfect; those lessons have influenced my ceramic art.

▼ The aim of the research was to increase the understanding of how the entrepreneur’s process of creativity began and evolved by determining how ideas and opportunities were discovered, recognised and harnessed prior to the advent of entrepreneurship. There appeared to be a shortage of appropriate research studies into the entrepreneur’s creative processes, describing how it began and evolved over time. There also appeared to be few studies that attempted to describe how entrepreneurs discovered their ideas, harnessed them, and converted them into opportunities. It would seem that the majority of the empirical research studies on the subject have focused upon managers and founders of companies compared to studies involving nascent entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs. The objective of the research study was to provide a new synthesis of the research literature in order to create a framework that described the key cognitive processes and personal attributes that were involved in the entrepreneurs’ search and evolution of their ideas. The content and elements of the framework were then compared with the context of the entrepreneurs’ personal histories in order that generic themes could be identified. After a period of one year, further interviews were held with the entrepreneurs in order to monitor any changes to the processes involved. The research began with a review of existing literature relating to the entrepreneur and entrepreneurship. A selective review of the historical research literature on the entrepreneur was followed by an appraisal of some of the entrepreneurs’ attitudes and behaviour patterns. This provided a thumbnail sketch of each entrepreneur, his or her origins, and what he or she did. This was followed by a description of what might be construed as a typical nascent entrepreneur. This description detailed the process from the ‘learning phase’ to the ‘triggering event’ that caused such a dramatic change in his or her career path, i.e. the critical incident that set off a mental chain reaction within the nascent entrepreneur that led to the establishment of his or her entrepreneurial intentions. A review of the research literature concerning the focal theory of the research objectives led to an in-depth appraisal of what is meant by ‘creativity’ and ‘cognitive processes’. The difficulties of researching such subjective actions are shared by previous research literature. The creative variables were then brought together in a number of phases contained in the discovery and evolution processes. The process was then followed through the discovery phase, stressing the importance of the prepared mind to the birth of the idea. The various thinking and analytical processes involved in the evolution of an idea into an opportunity were discussed in the context of an entrepreneur’s core attributes and beliefs. The focal theory review concluded with a framework of the elements appertaining to the research objectives that had been derived from the research literature. The structure and elements of the framework were…

▼ When talking about personalization online, Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently said "it will be very hard for people to watch or consume something that has not in some sense been tailored for them." This level of personalized filtering of content has worried academics and activists. Many argue that users will be trapped in a so-called "Filter Bubble," limiting their exposure to challenging or new ideas they are not expected to like. In answer to these worries, serendipitous recommendation systems have been developed to help users make surprising and pleasant discoveries outside of their typical online content sphere. In this thesis, we investigate whether serendipitous recommendation system do indeed help break the filter bubble effect. In contrast to previous work, we investigate this question on one large-scale live experiment. We find that serendipity partially mitigates the filter bubble effect, but that users are more responsible for their own filter bubbles than algorithms. Further, we search for user characteristics that can be used to identify users more likely to experience the filter bubble effect. We find that users spending more time on site are less likely to experience the filter bubble effect.

▼ There is more to the human activity of fishing than just catching fish. These are not the words of unlucky fishers. It is also not coincidental that this pursuit of the elusive is more than fishing for fish. If fishing did not pose all the challenges of being in pursuit of the elusive, it would not be fishing, nor would it serve as a metaphor for life. And whilst the thesis is inspired by the purest notion of fishing for fish, the existential quest to which the more entails, is inescapable.
From Paleolithic Man to a Prioress of a Medieval Nunnery, the human activity of fishing casts its net out to the unknown in search of an elusive creature that smells less like fish and more like the salty-sweet bounty of lost feminine deities. Irrespective of the longstanding use of fishing as an allegory of the spiritual quest (or of human life as such experienced), and the numerous fishing tales that hint at a popular philosophy, one published paragraph from 1880 remains the only Philosophy of Fishing to date. This lacking of philosophical inquiry into fishing has never seemed so queer as in our current conundrum in fisheries management. Management of the last of the hunters and gatherers has proved to be a challenge in fisheries the world over. Beyond the question of twenty first century industrial fishing I argue that the human activity of fishing may play a key role in the understanding of ourselves as a symbolic mind, and moreover, how the activity of fishing itself, as a conduit of two worlds may be an embodied symbol of our humanity.
This thesis in three parts aims to demonstrate how a philosophy of fishing may contribute to both the current topological discourse, and its applicability in entering multidisciplinary discussions involving current global issues in fisheries policy and governance. Motivated by Susanne Langer’s work on symbolism, and also the fishing tales of celebrated literature, Part I considers how the activity of fishing has been instrumental in understanding ourselves as human beings and further enabling us to connect with that understanding. In Part II, the thinking about a sense of place within the elemental and unframeable waterscape is facilitated through the philosophies of José Ortega y Gasset, Jeff Malpas and Freya Mathews. With an aim at synthesizing our evolutionary capacity for symbolism with a topological consideration of an aquatic sense of place, Part III develops an ethical consideration of fishing inspired by the topological philosophies and reflected in the notions of Indigenous kinship and Dreamings they support.

▼ This research study is conducted to test Workman, Fiszman, Rindflesch and Nahl's information flow-serendipitous knowledge discovery (IF-SKD) model of information behavior, in a clinical care context. To date, there have been few attempts to model the serendipitous knowledge discovery of physicians. Due to the growth and complexity of the biomedical literature, as well as the increasingly specialized nature of medicine, there is a need for advanced systems that can quickly present information and assist physicians to discover new knowledge. The National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Lister Hill Center for Biocommunication's Semantic MEDLINE project is focused on identifying and visualizing semantic relationships in the biomedical literature to support knowledge discovery. This project led to the development of a new information discovery system, Spark. The aim of Spark is to promote serendipitous knowledge discovery by assisting users in maximizing
the use of their conceptual short-term memory to iteratively search for, engage, clarify and evaluate information presented from the biomedical literature. Using Spark, this study analyzes the IF- SKD model by capturing and analyzing physician feedback. The McCay-Peet, Toms and Kelloway's Perception of
Serendipity and Serendipitous Digital Environment (SDE) questionnaires are used. Results are evaluated to determine whether Spark contributes to physicians' serendipitous knowledge discovery and the ability of the IF-SKD ability to capture physicians' information behavior in a clinical setting.

▼ After finishing school, some graduates quickly and easily find a suitable job, while others face periods of un(der)employment. The current dissertation investigated such individual differences in school-to-work transition success. Our focus was on Vocational Education and Training graduates (VET – mbo in Dutch), as they have a relatively vulnerable labor market position. Also, they constitute a large societal group, while relatively little research has focused on this group. Three findings stand out in this dissertation. First, job seekers can shape their job search process to a considerable degree. We found individual differences in the intensity with which graduates searched for employment, which related to self-control and proactive coping skills. We also found differences in the way individuals shaped the social context that could foster the job search process. For example, job seekers who had mobilized their social relations more intensively during their job search process reported better employment chances. Also, job seekers were able to increase the pay-off of engaging in networking events and job applications by proactively preparing for these social contexts. Proactive job seekers were also more likely to act upon and mitigate the potential negative impact of anticipated discrimination. Even ostensible random chance events that contributed to successful job searching were better regulated by some than others. Specifically, those who prepared better for their job search and -interview were more likely to experience and capitalize on chance events during these processes. The second finding is that some graduates have better opportunities for success than others. Besides an individual’s job search efforts, there are differences in the opportunities that social contexts (can) offer. For example, job seekers with a larger social network reported better employment chances. Interestingly, job seekers with larger social networks also reported better employment chances if they had not engaged these social relations in their job search. Given that social network size and quality are related to socioeconomic and demographic background, graduates differ in their opportunities for school to-work transition success. The third finding is that graduates perceive and act differently upon the social context. For example, we found that perceived ethnic group work norms are, in general, related to individual work motivation, but this was especially true among job seekers who are generally more sensitive to their environment (i.e., overcontrollers). Aligning with the idea of individual differences in contextual sensitivity, we found that especially less emotionally stable job applicants noticed chance events in a job interview context, even when all applicants were exposed to those events. Also, given that proactive job seekers were more likely to act upon discrimination, it suggests that proactive individuals may be more likely to perceive potential obstacles as a challenge rather than as a threat. Hence, there seem individual…

▼ ARCHITECTURE AND SOCIETY This critical practice PhD dissertation, by focusing on my work through the prism of the Practice Research Symposium process, frames the twin concepts of architecture and society and examines their relationship to each other. It particularly focuses on the architect’s role in society, as an active agent in space formation, what opportunities that role might offer, and identifies activities and ideas where the architect may make a contribution to a bridging of the twin concepts. With that in mind and firmly noted as the ground of this PhD, it explores my work and ideas and aims to show where these contribute to a greater understanding and wider appreciation of the social engagement possibilities inherent in the profession of architect. The PhD introduces several concepts that constellate the two powerful human ideas of Architecture and Soci- ety and places them within, what I have called The Purposeful Frame. The concepts introduced include three main ideas:- Significant Movement, Social Attitude and Social Potential, with other spin off thoughts, and these will be explored more fully later in this document, through an examination of my work and ideas, and those of other people. MAIN CONCEPTS Encapsulated thoughts and ideas or a short summary on The Purposeful Frame.
Significant Movement – Distilling and framing the essential movement within a project.
Social Attitude – Ways of being, embedded within the project. Firstly, opportunities for representing certain social formations, and secondly, possibilities for communality within the programme.
Social Potential – Valency, a conceptual attempt at calibration of social potential; and tactics and tectonics to improve potential for social occasion; fit, right size, thresholds, mood, etc.

▼ Serendipity, the word used to describe an unexpected encounter with information, people, or objects, has drawn much scholarly attention since its 1754 coinage by Horace Walpole. Historians commonly use this term when describing unexpected encounters during their research. However, historians have also been shown to be meticulous, organized researchers whose work is unlikely to contain elements that are unexpected. This thesis is an investigation of serendipity as it is recognized, defined, and experienced by historians in both physical and digital environments. Article One presents a grounded theory analysis of 20 interview transcriptions, Article Two presents a combination of grounded theory, content analysis, and narrative analysis of historians’ responses to an online survey, and Article Three summarizes the quantitative responses to the same survey, but focuses on digital environments. In Article One we found that historians frequently used active verbs to describe serendipity, and concluded that agency plays a prominent role in these experiences. In Article Two, responses from 142 participants reinforce the importance of agency, demonstrating that active research methods lead them to these serendipitous encounters. Article Three reports on the features of digital environments that historians found to support serendipity, including those that encourage exploration, connect people, have options for keyword searching, and highlight potentially relevant links. Taken together, these articles comprise a thesis that advances our current understanding of serendipity. Contributions to the field of LIS include acknowledging the role of agency in serendipitous encounters, and the use of multi-method analysis for investigating serendipity in a single population.

This research focuses on the construction and implementation of a serendipian approach to youth unemployment. The aim of this approach is to help them to find and keep a job while addressing this transition in a more serene way. We split our analysis in two parts. The first part of this thesis work focuses on self-perception and self-representation of NEETs - Neither in Employment nor Education and Training. The challenge here is to better understand the NEETs population. This first part consists of two studies: - Study 1 biographical interview (N = 28): the objective of this first study is to better understand the course of NEETs by collecting the successions of events that constitute the path of the person and the way in which she or he experienced it. - Study 2 SR - social representation (N = 137): with an exploratory approach, the objective of this study isto describe the SRs of the NEETs and of a control group made up of people who work, who study or who are in training. The second objective is then to compare these RS. The second part focuses on how to increase the employability of NEETs. Three studies compose this part: - Study 3 semi-directive interview with recruiters (N = 11): the aim…

▼ In this dissertation, we examine to improve the user experience with recommender systems beyond prediction accuracy. We focus on the following aspects of the user experience. In chapter 3 we examine if a recommender system exposes users to less diverse contents over time. In chapter 4 we look at the relationships between user personality and user preferences for recommendation diversity, popularity, and serendipity. In chapter 5 we investigate the relations between the self-reported user satisfaction and the three recommendation properties with the inferred user recommendation consumption. In chapter 6 we look at four different rating inter- faces and evaluated how these interfaces affected the user rating experience. We find that over time a recommender system exposes users to less-diverse contents and that users rate less-diverse items. However, users who took recommendations were exposed to more diverse recommendations than those who did not. Furthermore, users with different personalities have different preferences for recommendation diversity, popularity, and serendipity (e.g. some users prefer more diverse recommendations, while others prefer similar ones). We also find that user satisfaction with recommendation popularity and serendipity measured with survey questions strongly relate to user recommendation consumption inferred with logged data. We then propose a way to get better signals about user preferences and help users rate items in the recommendation systems more consistently. That is providing exemplars to users at the time they rate the items improved the consistency of users’ ratings. Our results suggest several ways recommender system practitioners and re- searchers can enrich the user experience. For example, by integrating users’ personality into recommendation frameworks, we can help recommender systems deliver recommendations with the preferred levels of diversity, popularity, and serendipity to individual users. We can also facilitate the rating process by integrating a set of proven rating-support techniques into the systems’ interfaces.

This research deals with chance that is a part of human action. It is a coincidental happening, an incident; something that happens unexpectedly, unpredictably or without intention or planning. This kind of chance differs from mathematical chance because its initial value is not known and it is impossible to repeat identically the chain of happenings that lead to it.
The main task of the research is to answer the questions “what is chance?”, “what is the nature of chance?” and “how does chance influence social decision making?”. The aim of the subsequent answers is to increase understanding towards chance. The task is fulfilled by giving chance a voice by doing systematic interpretation about different texts, social phenomenon and happenings as they have been documented. This results in a synthesis of chance theories, which is used in demonstrating that chance is the unintended consequence of human action that is based on subjective self-interest. Chance is also presented being…

▼ Cardiac arrhythmias are a major source of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare cost in the United States. Arrhythmias are inherently multi-scale phenomena where cellular and subcellular abnormalities result in pathological impulse propagation. The failure of clinical therapies to sufficiently prevent or terminate arrhythmias is due, in part, to a lack of understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Integrating experimental results across spatial and temporal scales using computation modeling presents an important paradigm for investigating arrhythmia mechanisms. In this dissertation, computational modeling and experimental data at the subcellular, cellular, and tissue scales are used together to gain insight in to mechanisms of arrhythmias for clinically relevant cardiac diseases. On the cellular and subcellular scale, the ability of caveolin-3 to modulate action potential duration through ion channel regulation was investigated using action potential models to interpreting ion channel data. Two examples are presented in Chapter 2. In the first example, a mouse ventricular action potential model is able to link changes in Kv4.3 channel expression to observed QT shortening from the electrocardiogram of caveolin-3-overexpressing mice. The second example parameterizes ionic currents in a human ventricular action potential model with patch clamp data from ion channels co-expressed with Long QT Syndrome causing mutations in caveolin-3. The results identify slowed calcium-dependent inactivation of the L-type calcium channel as an potentially arrhythmogenic mechanisms.Integrating the subcellular, cellular, and tissue scales for multi-scale cardiac electrophysiology modeling presents numerical, computational, and physiological challenges. Chapter 3 examines these numerical challenges and presents a new high order finite element method to potentially reduce computational expense. This multi-scale electrophysiology solver is used to investigate the behavior of electrical rotors in the human atria in Chapter 4. Specifically, discontinuities in the fiber architecture of the right atria are shown to anchor rotors.Transgenic mouse models present a unique ability investigate genome effects on the tissue scale. The final two chapters provide literature reviews aimed towards future work investigating triggered arrhythmia mechanisms. Chapter 5 reviews the mechanisms of CaMKII mediated afterdepolarization in cardiac disease. Finally, Chapter 6 provides a detailed methodological review of Langendorff perfusion and optical mapping of ex-vivo transgenic mouse hearts.

▼ Serendipity is a popular word that captures a rich
phenomenon with potentially far-reaching implications from a
personal to global level.
Serendipity is associated with
revelations, discoveries, life events, and innovations, both big
and small, and the lack of consensus on its definition reflects
this breadth of meaning.
Serendipity is defined in this research as
an unexpected experience prompted by an individual’s valuable
interaction with ideas, information, objects, or phenomena. While
efforts are being made to facilitate
serendipity in digital
environments (e.g., websites, databases, search engines), we know
very little about the complex interaction between the individual
and the environment and what actually facilitates
serendipity. In
three phases, this thesis investigated how individual differences
and environmental factors influence work-related
serendipity and
how
serendipity may be facilitated in digital environments. Phase 1
explored
serendipity through semi-structured interviews with 12
professionals and scholars. Based on findings from Phase 1, in
Phase 2 a serendipitous digital environment scale to measure how
well a digital environment supports
serendipity was developed,
assessed, and honed though an expert review by eight researchers
and a web-based survey of 107 university students. Phase 3 employed
a web-based survey of 289 professionals and scholars. Through
exploratory factor analysis, the serendipitous digital environment
scale was refined and assessed. Using multivariate analyses,
relationships were explored between
serendipity, the underlying
factors of the serendipitous digital environment scale, type of
digital environment, creative environment perceptions, locus of
control, extraversion, and openness to experience. My research
found that the type of digital environment influences the frequency
of
serendipity, which in turn shares a relationship with three
factors of the serendipitous digital environment scale – enables
connections, trigger-rich, and leads to the unexpected.
Furthermore, results indicate that individuals’ level of
extraversion influences perceptions of
serendipity in general. This
research contributes to our knowledge of information seeking and
use through findings that confirm and augment previous models of
serendipity through the identification of what influences
serendipity. This research also underscores the potential to design
for
serendipity in digital environments and provides a tool for
developers to assess the serendipitous nature of their
systems.

▼ Introduction. Studies have been conducted on serendipitous encounters in the physical library environment. In this study, we aimed instead to look at features in the online library catalog that can lead to serendipitous en-counters. The aim was also to see if libraries took active steps to promote serendipity in their online library cata-logs. Method. A heuristic evaluation of four online library catalogs was conducted. The set of heuristics used was based on previous research, with the aim of identifying facets of a serendipitous environment. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with librarians from three of the researched libraries. The results from the heuristic evaluation and the transcripts of the interviews formed the data for the analysis. Analysis. Thematic analyses were carried out on the data. The data from the heuristic evaluation and the interviews were analyzed and presented separately, leading up to a joint summary. Results. Most of the online library catalogs had features like "Similar items" and book recommendations, which can lead to serendipitous encounters. Librarians often experience a lack of influence over their online library catalogs. Librarians identified problems such as patrons expecting their online library catalog to function more like a web search engine, for example, Google Search. Conclusion. The online library catalogs have features that promote serendipitous encounters but we identified problems in how they are best designed. Using an integrated interface for the online library catalog and the library's website was one way to give the librarians more influence over their interface, which increased their likelihood to provide it with more information and content. We suggest further research with an extensive approach of serendi-pitous encounters not only in the online library catalog but also in other digital library environments such as web-sites, social media, blogs and apps. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

▼ This doctoral research, initially inspired by contact with The Lonely Planet Guide to Experimental Travel, is an exploratory foray into the realm of "experimental travel". While a complex history of experimentation is implicit in its practice, "experimental travel" is extricated from the temporally and spatially limited paradigm of "conducting an experiment", and rather argued to be processual, created through fluid, contingent, relational performances in space. Experimentalism in tourism abounds, from random methods of exploring new or foreign places, to infusing touristic practice with playful, chance-based or competitive components.
Indeed, positioning "experimental travel" as a category of tourism is argued to be too limited and prescriptive a framework. Rather, diverse practices such as rolling dice to make decisions while travelling, to taking a toy on a journey as a "mascot", to participating in hitchhiking competitions are drawn together through their demonstration of an attitude to experimentality. "Experimental travel" is essentially creative, inherently embodied, and its encounters are imbricated in the everyday, both in the context of de-differentiation of home and away as well as the quotidian that accompanies any journey. Like all touristic performance, "experimental travel" harbours the potential to transform any space into – an often fleetingly – touristic place.
As there is currently no academic scholarship investigating the nexus of tourism-experimentalism, this thesis is interdisciplinary, non-traditional in approaches to both structure and methodology.
Tourists are important: not solely because they represent a fundamental component of the largest industry in the world, but because travel styles reflect broader cultural and social shifts. They are metaphors of the social world, and the practice of infusing creative, experimental performativities in touristic encounters is meaningful. This doctoral study traces these meanings, while simultaneously exploring possibilities of "experimental travel" in the contexts of future tourism research.

▼ Big science infrastructures are confronting increasing demands for public accountability, not only within scientific discovery but also their capacity to generate secondary economic value. To build and operate their sophisticated infrastructures, big science often generates frontier technologies by designing and building technical solutions to complex and unprecedented engineering problems. In parallel, the previous decade has seen the disruption of rapid technological changes impacting the way science is done and shared, which has led to the coining of the concept of Open Science (OS). Governments are quickly moving towards the OS paradigm and asking big science centres to "open up” the scientific process. Yet these two forces run in opposition as the commercialization of scientific outputs usually requires significant financial investments and companies are willing to bear this cost only if they can protect the innovation from imitation or unfair competition. This PhD dissertation aims at understanding how new applications of ICT are affecting primary research outcomes and the resultant technology transfer in the context of big and OS. It attempts to uncover the tensions in these two normative forces and identify the mechanisms that are employed to overcome them. The dissertation is comprised of four separate studies: 1) A mixed-method study combining two large-scale global online surveys to research scientists (2016, 2018), with two case studies in high energy physics and molecular biology scientific communities that assess explanatory factors behind scientific data-sharing practices; 2) A case study of Open Targets, an information infrastructure based upon data commons, where European Molecular Biology Laboratory-EBI and pharmaceutical companies collaborate and share scientific data and technological tools to accelerate drug discovery; 3) A study of a unique dataset of 170 projects funded under ATTRACT -a novel policy instrument of the European Commission lead by European big science infrastructures- which aims to understand the nature of the serendipitous process behind transitioning big science technologies to previously unanticipated commercial applications; and 4) a case study of White Rabbit technology, a sophisticated open-source hardware developed at the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) in collaboration with an extensive ecosystem of companies.

▼ This practice-led research explores creative opportunities within fine art printmaking. In the context of my own practice, it investigates how new possibilities might emerge from the interplay between a technically precise and nuanced medium and an exploration of creative approaches within it – approaches not tied down by preconceptions of technical rectitude.
The flux and distinction between these modalities of approach are used to activate my work by opening new questions for exploration.
In particular, the project explores how chance events and extemporaneous movements generate possibilities that are unconstrained by disciplinary conventions, languages, processes or techniques. The capacity of happenstance to suggest possibilities and nuanced difference is explored as the focus for activation of a creative impetus, as I negotiate a path between correctness and opportunism, seeking a vitality for my practice.

▼ Many organizations are trying to re-create the ‘Google experience’, to find and exploit their own corporate information. However, there is evidence that finding information in the workplace using search engine technology has remained difficult, with socio-technical elements largely neglected in the literature. Explication of the factors and generative mechanisms (ultimate causes) to effective search task outcomes (user satisfaction, search task performance and serendipitous encountering) may provide a first step in making improvements. A transdisciplinary (holistic) lens was applied to Enterprise Search and Discovery capability, combining critical realism and activity theory with complexity theories to one of the world’s largest corporations. Data collection included an in-situ exploratory search experiment with 26 participants, focus groups with 53 participants and interviews with 87 business professionals. Thousands of user feedback comments and search transactions were analysed. Transferability of findings was assessed through interviews with eight industry informants and ten organizations from a range of industries. A wide range of informational needs were identified for search filters, including a need to be intrigued. Search term word co-occurrence algorithms facilitated serendipity to a greater extent than existing methods deployed in the organization surveyed. No association was found between user satisfaction (or self assessed search expertise) with search task performance and overall performance was poor, although most participants had been satisfied with their performance. Eighteen factors were identified that influence search task outcomes ranging from user and task factors, informational and technological artefacts, through to a wide range of organizational norms. Modality Theory (Cybersearch culture, Simplicity and Loss Aversion bias) was developed to explain the study observations. This proposes that at all organizational levels there are tendencies for reductionist (unimodal) mind-sets towards search capability leading to ‘fixes that fail’. The factors and mechanisms were identified in other industry organizations suggesting some theory generalizability. This is the first socio-technical analysis of Enterprise Search and Discovery capability. The findings challenge existing orthodoxy, such as the criticality of search literacy (agency) which has been neglected in the practitioner literature in favour of structure. The resulting multifactorial causal model and strategic framework for improvement present opportunities to update existing academic models in the IR, LIS and IS literature, such as the DeLone and McLean model for information system success. There are encouraging signs that Modality Theory may enable a reconfiguration of organizational mind-sets that could transform search task outcomes and ultimately business performance.

▼ Contemporary public libraries serve as a conduit between sources of
knowledge and the public. They are not only a repository of knowledge
but also a community hub that facilitates, creates and disseminates this
information. These libraries are democratic institutions that enable and
advocate for free access of information for everyone, where ‘information’
goes beyond physical collections to include digital formats, live events
(lectures and workshops) and learning through making.
In contemporary public libraries, the interaction between people
and information is vital to their success, as a library without people is
essentially a storage room. This thesis proposes the design of a new
public library for Sudbury that encourages discovery and elicits curiosity
as a method of improving connections between people and knowledge
stored in the library. Through the careful organization of the library’s
program, the decentralized approach to stored knowledge, and the
removal of spatial barriers, the library’s architecture promotes browsing,
wandering and ultimately discovering all the library has to offer

▼ It is a challenging task for interaction designers to find a way to design a digital artefact supporting serendipitous discovery. Its interdisciplinary nature requires sufficient knowledge of information visualization, social navigation and serendipity. Based on literature review and prior relevant works, several traces having potential to aid such exploration were defined. Through creating and testing AniMap, an interactive graph visualization for discovering new anime clips, in this thesis I argue that such an artefact has the potential to support serendipitous discovery, owing to its features of being information visualization, interactive and in a graph layout, coupled with users’ personal interests. Even so, finding details of how to influence serendipitous discovery remain an ongoing challenge considering the dynamic nature of serendipity.

▼ Lost&Found Videothek is the concept for an interactive video library thought for users engaged in an exploratory research mode, in which content is organized according to a collaborative, subjective and implicit indexing system for the enhancement of serendipity. This idea was the result of a design-based research with a user-centered approach in the field of information retrieval. With the use of design methods such as heuristic UX evaluation, co-sketching, and other original design experiments, the project aimed at identifying the most valuable qualities of physical and digital libraries in order to integrate them within one retrieval system.

Numerical analysis of multiphase flows in porous media on non-rectangular geometry.

▼ Fluid flow through porous media is a
subject of common interest in many branches of engineering as well as applied natural science. In this work, we investigate the behavior and numerical treatment of multiphase flow in porous media. To be more specific, we take the sequestration of CO₂ in geological media as an example. Mathematical modeling and numerical study of carbon sequestration helps to predict both short and long-term behavior of CO₂ storage in geological media, which can be a benefit in many ways. This work aims at developing accurate and efficient numerical treatment for problems in porous media on non-rectangular geometries. Numerical treatment of Darcy flow and transport have been developed for many years on rectangular and simplical meshes. However, extra effort is required to extend them to general non-rectangular meshes. In this dissertation work, for flow simulation, we develop new H(div)- conforming mixed finite elements (AT and AT [superscript red] ) which are accurate on cuboidal hexahedra. We also develop the new direct
serendipity finite element (DS [subscript r] ), which is H¹ -conforming and accurate on quadrilaterals and a special family of hexahedra called truncated cubes. The use of the direct
serendipity finite element reduces the number of degrees of freedom significantly and therefore accelerates numerical simulations. For transport, we use the newly developed direct
serendipity elements in an enriched Galerkin method (EG), which is locally conservative. The entropy viscosity stabilization is applied to eliminate spurious oscillations. We test the EG-DS [subscript r] method on problems with diffusion, transport, and coupled flow and transport. Finally, we study two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media with capillary pressure. We work on a new formulation of the problem and force the continuity of the capillary flux with a modification to conquer the degeneracy. The numerical simulation of two-phase flow is conducted on non-rectangular grids and uses the new elements.

▼ With the current proliferation of sensor equipped mobile devices such as smartphones and
tablets, location aware services are expanding beyond the mere efficiency and work related needs
of users, evolving in order to incorporate fun, culture and the social life of users.
Today people on the move have more and more connectivity and are expected to be able to
communicate with their usual and familiar social networks. That means communications not only
with their peers and colleagues, friends and family but also with unknown people that might
share their interests, curiosities or happen to use the same social network.
Through social networks, location aware blogging, cultural mobile applications relevant
information is now available at specific geographical locations and open to feedback and
conversations among friends as well as strangers. In fact, nowadays smartphone technologies
aloud users to post and retrieve content while on the move, often relating to specific physical
landmarks or locations, engaging and being engaged in conversations with strangers as much as
their own social network. The use of such technologies and applications while on the move can
often lead people to serendipitous discoveries and interactions. Throughout our thesis we are
engaging on a two folded investigation: how can we foster and support serendipitous discoveries
and what are the best interfaces for it?
In fact, to read and write content while on the move is a cognitively intensive task. While the map
serves the function of orienting the user, it also absorbs most of the user’s concentration. In order
to address this kind of cognitive overload issue with Breadcrumbs we propose a 360 degrees
interface that enables the user to find content around them by means of scanning the surrounding
space with the mobile device.
By using a loose metaphor of a periscope, harnessing the power of the smartphone sensors we
designed an interactive interface capable of detecting content around the users and display it in
the form of 2 dimensional bubbles which diameter depends on their distance from the users.
Users will navigate the space in relation to the content that they are curious about, rather than in
relation to the traditional geographical map. Through this model we envisage alleviating a certain
cognitive overload generated by having to continuously confront a two dimensional map with
the real three dimensional space surrounding the user, but also use the content as a navigational filter. Furthermore this alternative mean of navigating space might bring serendipitous discovery
about places that user where not aware of or intending to reach. We hence conclude our thesis
with the evaluation of the Breadcrumbs application and the comparison of the 360 degrees
