1. Ravić, Ivana P., 1984-.

Degree: Filozofski fakultet, 2015, Univerzitet u Beogradu

History - History of the Serbian people in the Middle Ages

2. Ilić-Tasić Slobodanka. Epilepsy in serbian medieval lands.

Degree: PhD, Medical Sciences, 2013, University of Kragujevac

A number of studies and scientific papers in which the epilepsy and its treatment in different historical periods were studied are published both in our and in the world historiography. The epilepsy is approached by some of these studies from a historical point of view with attempt to shed light on the different methods of the traditional folk medicine. Numerous studies belong to the modern scientific medicine (research of the effects of the pharmacologically active principles of medicinal herbs; anticonvulsant effects of some medicinal plants in animal models and in clinical studies). A smaller number of studies were devoted to the treatment of epilepsy in medieval medicine. This study can be classified as the study in the field of the history of medicine and the common branches. This study is characterized with ultidisciplinary approach from the standpoint of ethnology, pharmacology, phytotherapy, religion, philosophy, literature and others. The aim of this study is to perform a comparative analysis of epilepsy and methods for its treatment between them in Serbian medieval countries and in contemporary medicine. The method of work includes comparative analysis of epilepsy in the Serbian medieval lands and in other European countries of that time. It is based on the data obtained from the medieval manuscripts (hagiographies, biographies, codes), laws/regulations documents related to epilepsy and the documents about the organization of Serbian medieval monastery hospitals. The study includes the Serbian lands in medieval period, from the ninth to mid-fifteenth century. People who suffered from epilepsy, psychosis and other diseases were treated in the medieval monastery hospitals or later in monasteries. Both scientific and spiritual (religious) medicine methods have been applied in medieval monastery hospitals. During the long period of slavery under the Ottoman rule, there was a delay in the development of scientific medicine and the treatment of patients with epilepsy. Herbal, spiritual and folk medicine were the main methods for treatment of patients with epilepsy and other diseases among the Serbian people. Among patients with epilepsy and mental illness, were not only Orthodox Christians but also followers of other religions who had asked and received help in Serbian monasteries. All different ways for treatment of epilepsy, particularly which belong to medieval medicine can be recognized in the nowadays Serbian folk medicine. Some methods which belonged to scientific medicine in the Middle Ages were taken over by folk medicine during time, as evidenced by preserved “Lekaruša” books. Also, the various methods for medical treatment from the past are applied in the contemporary folk medicine of the other European nations. The most of plants that have been applied for the treatment of epilepsy in traditional medicine have a sedative effect on the central nervous system, and positive psychological effect.
