▼ Threshold aligning (performing place) is a practice-led research project that explores drawing and sounding in human spatiality and, in particular, shifting sensations of place in the contemporary city. The complex notion of place, defined by the philosopher Jeff Malpas as a structure within which experience is possible, is applied to the research. The research engages strategies of mapping, embracing the topographical analogy proposed by Malpas, to examining the physical and conceptual notion of the threshold. Specifically, the research looks to the crucial role that performance plays in connecting person and place, opening up forms of agency as described in the philosopher Rosi Braidotti's theory of 'complex singularity'. The research explores the performance of the quotidian and the personalisation of public space, as reflected in the practices of artists Morgan O'Hara, Bianca Hester and Cameron Robbins. Through empirical observations in city space, material processes of engaging with field-working include walking, active listening, sounding and drawing, the project aims to make visible and audible the performance of place in different scales and modalities. Engaging a sonic
sensibility, as described by artist Salome Voegelin, the work questions visual priority and the simplification of place, in an approach that looks to aligning thresholds in the experience of the contemporary city.

▼ Feeling Subjects investigates sensibility in relation
to the production of subjectivity in the later eighteenth century.
It creates a model of sensibility as a discursive space bringing
together literary, philosophical, and medical understandings of
feeling. It argues that sensibility’s discursive space produces
experiential subjects in an ongoing, dynamic project of negotiating
between the internalization of public experiences and the
projection of private feelings and thoughts. It invokes the
three-dimensional image of the Möbius strip to envision
inner/private and external/public expressions of feeling as
inseparable, yet distinct elements that help to produce the feeling
subject. This model of sensibility represents a new theory of
subjectivity in the later eighteenth-century where the literary
subject and the social community that surrounds him or her are both
co-constitutive and co-destructive and where the traditional
binaries are challenged in a model that sees every character as
simultaneously a public and private subject. The aim of the project
is to show that the legacies of rational men and emotional women
which have occupied scholars of the eighteenth century for much of
the last fifty years suggest a much more cohesive understanding of
gender and its connection to subjectivity than is revealed in much
of the fiction of sensibility in the period. Feeling Subjects
offers a theory of sensibility that is not inherently gendered, and
that focuses on how individuals experience themselves in relation
to the world around them while simultaneously generating that
world. The project is divided into two halves which enact the
Möbius model of private and public feeling. The first half focuses
on the personally and socially productive potential of sensibility
in The Adventures of David Simple, The History of Ophelia, The
Vicar of Wakefield, and The Fool of Quality. The second half
examines the increasingly negative expression of sensibility in A
Simple Story, Secresy, The Natural Daughter, and Zofloya.
Throughout Feeling Subjects, sensibility is not just a word
denoting the expression of feeling, but a discursive space through
which to experience the tensions and interrelations between public
and private thought and feeling in theories of socialization in the
later eighteenth-century novel.

▼ While women have made strides toward integrating the predominantly male sports industry, there is still a long way to go before they can enjoy the same power and legitimacy as men on and off the field. Despite the many victories of the feminist movement, including the passage of Title IX, patriarchal relations still permeate professional sports in the U.S. This thesis looks at the promotional media of the Lingerie Football League (LFL) (2009-2012) to reveal some of the material and symbolic forms of oppression against women in sports that contribute to the perception of women’s sports as second-rate. Promotional media that I study in this analysis include media representations of the league in promotional content on television (MTV2), online (Lflus.com, Mtv2.com, and Playboy.com), and in print (Playboy magazine). I also analyze the league’s uniform, team names, and logos.
The results indicate that the promotional discourse created and endorsed by the LFL, at once blatantly sexually objectified the athletes who participated in this form of “fantasy football” and also demanded that teammates play the game as an aggressive contact sport requiring strength, physical conditioning, and risk of injury. Thus, contradictions in promotional media for the LFL pointed to ambivalence about women’s roles and capabilities in the sports industry. The LFL’s promotional campaign demonstrated how the league and its players embraced women’s athleticism in tackle football and simultaneously neutralized such athleticism as a threat to men’s domination of sports and to men’s domination of society in general. I conclude by arguing that the LFL’s latest rebranding efforts, that include ostensibly moving away from lingerie and embracing “performance wear” amounts to nominal change. Even as the “Legends Football League,” the new LFL still requires players to play in bras and panties with insufficient protective padding.

▼ Title: Early detection of Post Stroke Depression: psychometric properties of the Signs of Depression Scale
Background Post stroke depression (PSD) is a common consequence after stroke. Depression has been negatively associated with functional outcome, length of stay in hospital, cognitive impairment, and social activities. One third of the patients post stroke suffer from communicative impairments. For assessing PSD, irrespective of the fact that patients have communicative impairments, an observational screening tool could be useful. Of the available tools the Signs of Depression Scale is adapted. This revised version (SODS-R) needs validation.
Aim and research question(s) This study evaluates the internal consistency, interrater and intrarater reliability, criterion validity against the nine-items Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), construct validity against the Barthel Index (BI), diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of the SODS-R.
Method A quantitative, observational, cross-sectional cohort study in a Dutch nursing home from April 2013 till June 2013.
Results 18 residents, 14 proxies and 23 nurses were included. 4 residents had a major depression. Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency was 0.91, ICC for interrater and intrarater reliability was 0.96 (95% CI 0.87 – 0.98) and 0.88 (95% CI 0.70 – 0.96), respectively. Correlation between SODS-R and the PHQ-9 and BI, respectively, was rp = 0.25, p 0.344 and -0.18, p 0.474.The area under the curve for diagnostic performance of SODS-R was 0.68 (95% CI 0.32-1.00), and the optimum cut-off point was 5. Sensitivity and specificity were 75% and 69%, respectively. The positive and negative predicted value was 0.43 and 0.90, respectively.
Conclusion Although the sample size of this study is too small to provide evidence for psychometric of the SODS-R, the tool seems to be reliable and accurate and useful, but should be further validated.

▼ In an age of Revolution, when the rights of the individual were being fought for, Anna Letitia Barbauld was at the centre of the ideological debate. This thesis focuses on her political writing; it argues that she was more radical than previously thought. It provides new evidence of Barbauld’s close connection to an international network of reformers. Motivated by her Dissenting faith, her poems suggest that she made topical interventions which linked humanitarian concerns to wider abuses of power. This thesis traces Barbauld’s intellectual connections to seventeenth- and eighteenth-century religious and political thought. It examines her dialogues with the leading thinkers of her era, in particular Joseph Priestley. Setting her political writing in the context of the 1790s pamphlet wars, I argue that it is surprising that her 1792 pamphlet, Civic Sermons, escaped prosecution; its criticism of the government has similarities to the ideas of writers who were tried. My analysis of Barbauld’s political and socio-economic ideas suggests that, unlike many of her contemporaries, she trusted ordinary people, believing that they had a right to be involved in government. She argued that intellectuals should provide them with information but not tell them what to think. These democratic ideas were reflected in her literary approach; she employed different genres to reach different audiences. She critiqued and used the discourses of enthusiasm and sensibility to appeal to the emotions of her readers. I argue that, by adapting the traditionally male genre of political pamphlets, her work was part of a tradition of progressive female political thought dating back to the seventeenth century. Her innovative defence of civil liberties contributed to the development of liberalism.

▼ Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) began his career as a writer in London in 1757 and laboured as an anonymous hack until he leaped into literary stardom with the publication of his first, major poem, The Traveller (1764). His industriousness did not cease until his death, and he continued to produce numerous works. Not only does the quantity of his outputs impress us today, but his engagement in diverse fields of writing was arguably unmatched by his contemporaries.
However, of Goldsmith?s diverse writerly portfolio, much attention has been directed towards his great poetical, theatrical and novelistic works, at the expense of his historical compilations: An History of England, in a Series of Letters from a Nobleman to his Son (1764), the Roman History (1769), the History of England (1771) and the Grecian History (1774). Indeed, from the late-eighteenth century onwards, these texts have been enduringly and progressively dismissed as lesser works.
Broadly speaking, this thesis attempts to dismantle the lowly regard with which Goldsmith?s histories continues to be regarded. To this extent, firstly, the deepening trend towards pushing these compilations to the outer reaches of the Goldsmithian orbit is traced in detail and a robust defence against such an outlook is provided. The great, potential value they hold as materials of scholarly import is thus established. Following this, the histories are used to discover specific aspects of Goldsmith?s mindset. To begin, the History of England is examined to reveal his socio-political inclination. It is argued that he was a relatively objective and principled historian with an increasingly strong desire to warn his English readers of the dangers that they faced as a nation and earnestly sought to forward his belief in the need for a more equitable distribution of wealth. Then, his approach towards Ireland and the Irish is looked at by comparing his two English histories. It is established that while he increasingly valued his sense of English identity, there was enough of an Irishman left in him that he, in 1771, voiced concern over Britain?s neglectful and overbearing treatment of Ireland both politically and economically. Lastly, his religious tendencies are revealed by considering all of his histories. It is asserted that while he was never able to extrapolate himself from the common prejudices of the time, he still fought to make a case for amicability and toleration, for the sake of social cohesiveness and power.
In conclusion, the need to reconsider Goldsmith?s histories as valuable works in and of themselves is asserted and, by drawing the strands of what has been discovered in the preceding chapters, it is proposed that he should be acknowledged as a grounded patriot; as one who soberly reflected upon the realities of the moment to champion the cause of both Britain and Ireland.
In terms of methodology, the historical context is paid attention to, and the manner in which Goldsmith had, in composing his historical compilations, deviated from, modified and re-conveyed…

▼ This dissertation investigates relationships scholars have with information and art associated with aesthetic and theoretical disruptions. Its governing metaphor is the surprise affect, figured as a rhetorical and aesthetic event. My purposes are to evaluate institutional and scholastic responses to both desirable and disastrous information-aesthetic liminalities, trial performative engagements with surprises, and propose viable ways of engaging "innovation" for writing instruction. It is argued that aesthetic (i.e., relational in the sense that it is not immediate), performative, and temporal engagements with surprising objects of study are relatively viable options when considered alongside the "critical" manuscript. While the aesthetic has sometimes occupied a minor and inferior position relative to codified and metricized intelligences, such relegation rests on false and pernicious but well known and persistent dichotomies including intelligibility v.
sensibility, knowing v. feeling, thinking v. experiencing, and aesthetic v. epistemic. The intelligibility presupposed by the critical model, however, cannot achieve immediate engagement with its ostensible "object"; it therefore remains relational and aesthetic. Few would counter the claim, yet actual performances of relation are rare. To test its payoff, the dissertation performs two engagements with challenging objects associated with surprise: novelty or"the new" as such, and the currency of idiosyncrasy in the timbre of recent electronic music. While not incidental, novelty and timbre are examples in the project's larger attempt to rethink not just any given surprise, but ways of treating and dealing with the inevitability of metaphysical shock and overhaul.

▼ Abstract
This thesis focuses on Walt Whitman (1819-1892, acknowledged as âBard of Democracyâ), exploring the ecological sensibilities of the nineteenth-century American poetry in Whitmanâs Leaves of Grass. Whitman used many sensational and venturous words to express his admiration for nature and landscape in America. Whitmanâs interest in the relationship between human and nature motivated himself to incorporate every individual and every creature into his songs, which is close to concept of ecological egalitarianism. Focusing on Whitmanâs Leaves of Grass, this thesis explores the complexities of humanâs attitudes toward nature.
This book is composed of five chapters. Chapter One begins with exploring the interwoven connection of democracy and nature in Whitmanâs poems and gives an introduction to a scholarship review about Whitman. Chapter Two aimed at exploring the similar aspects of Whitman and Emerson as well as comparing their differences for the purpose of certifying that Whitmanâs poems about Nature embody a great number of concepts in Emersonâs poetic theory. Chapter Three focuses on the botanical imageries and symbols in Whitmanâs work by expanding Whitmanâs conception of democracy. Chapter Four analyzes the depiction of Nature in Whitmanâs poems to reconsider the complexities of Whitmanâs attitude toward the relationship between nonhuman creatures and human beings. Chapter Five concludes with affirming the decent value of ecological ideas embedded in Leaves of Grass.

▼ Throughout the 1740s and early 1750s, Handel produced a dozen dramatic oratorios. These works and the people involved in their creation were part of a widespread culture of sentiment. This term encompasses the philosophers who praised an innate "moral sense," the novelists who aimed to train morality by reducing audiences to tears, and the playwrights who sought (as Colley Cibber put it) to promote "the Interest and Honour of Virtue." The oratorio, with its English libretti, moralizing lessons, and music that exerted profound effects on the sensibility of the British public, was the ideal vehicle for writers of sentimental persuasions. My dissertation explores how the pervasive sentimentalism in England, reaching first maturity right when Handel committed himself to the oratorio, influenced his last masterpieces as much as it did other artistic products of the mid-eighteenth century. When searching for relationships between music and sentimentalism, historians have logically started with literary influences, from direct transferences, such as operatic settings of Samuel Richardson's Pamela, to indirect ones, such as the model that the Pamela character served for the Ninas, Cecchinas, and other garden girls of late eighteenth-century opera. Some scholars have cataloged musical features that comprise a sentimental style. Others have found philosophical, aesthetic, and historical links between sentimental culture and Italian and French opera, north German keyboard music, and the chamber music of Boccherini. What has been curiously passed over is musical sentimentalism in England (site of so many of the culture's landmark products) and its influence on the country's most famous adopted son. My dissertation addresses this lack, focusing on relationships between oratorio, contemporary theater, and religious philosophy. In Part 1, "Sentimental Oratorios, Sentimental Heroines," I show that we can speak with confidence of a sub-genre of "sentimental oratorio" that can be defined through comparison with both the sentimental drama of Handel's London and the Italianate sentimental opera that other musicologists have identified as emerging in the last third of the eighteenth century. In addition, I demonstrate that it was not only the aesthetics of contemporary drama that affected the oratorios' libretti; the performance practices of the sentimental theater also informed their earliest realizations, with the expectations and demands that the theater placed on its personnel (particularly its women) affecting both singers and Handel's composition and revision processes for them. Part 2 discusses "Empathetic Men & Religious Sentimentalism," topics that have not yet been considered in any serious way by scholars of the oratorio. Handel's librettists James Miller (1703–1744) and Thomas Morell (1703–1784) were clergymen as well as men of the theater, and they aimed throughout their religious writing — including their texts for Handel — to inculcate virtue by privileging emotional over rational…

This study tries to research the storybook Bichos (1940), by the portuguese modernist writer Miguel Torga, literary pseudonym of Adolfo Correia Rocha, the cosmovision of the author who emerges from the land-based theme (Nature) and a series of reflections about the human condition, from which also brings out a new conception of humanism. We depart from the principle that, in the narratives, the man is in a \"civilizeds̈ociety, corrupted by the values of his time, away out of proportion to their origin and to find a meaning to his existence, man has to return to his origin (to Nature, which appears in the tales within a pantheistic perspective). Returning to the origin, through contact with one another, that is, living beings who live integrated with nature, man will \"wake upänd will \"relearnẗo use his sensibility and will bring to his reason. Turning thus to live in a fraternal and balanced with all universe beings as a way to soften the harshness of the human existential path, marked, for example: by anguish and loneliness. To give consistency to this study, we use as theoretical support authors, as Kierkegaard, Heidegger and Sartre; the french sociologist Michel Maffesoli; Mikhail Bakhtin; Marc Augé, and others who contribute significantly for the analysis and discussion of the theme.

▼ The Politics of the Heart: Female Sentimental Travel
Writers and Revolution, 1775-1800 addresses the discursive
constructions of nation and gender in British women’s sentimental
travel writing during the last quarter of the eighteenth century,
and specifically during the American and French Revolutions. This
study is predicated upon two major and intertwined contentions.
First, that the convergence of sentimental discourse and the
travelogue genre introduced in Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental
Journey (1768) provided women with an entry point into the
male-dominated genre of the travelogue. Eighteenth-century theory,
culture, and even science invested women with an acute sensibility;
their socially constructed expertise within the realm of feeling
consequently allowed them particular authority within sentimental
discourse. Sterne’s emphasis on untutored response over erudite
reflection and on sociability over critical detachment created a
mode of travel writing tailored to women’s putative ‘natural’
abilities, ultimately contributing to the emergence of the female
travel writer post-1768. Second, that the combination of affective
language and eyewitness authority that characterized Sterne’s new
approach offered female travel writers a unique and effective means
of describing and directing the socio-political transformation of
the British nation during a period when its national identity was
being challenged and consolidated through a series of political
revolutions. The four travelogues at the center of this study
manifest the direct and indirect repercussions of revolution: Janet
Schaw’s Journal of a Lady of Quality (1774-1776) and Helen Maria
Williams’ A Tour in Switzerland (1798) provide firsthand accounts
of the emergent or fully-emerged revolutions in America, France,
and Switzerland, while the anonymous author of A Journey to the
Highlands of Scotland (1777) and Mary Morgan in A Tour to Milford
Haven (1795) deal with the domestic effects of these political
crises. Their strategic deployment of sentimental discourse is
calculated to shift the political temper of their nation and to
shape the contours of British national identity by manipulating the
circulation of feeling both within and outside of the nation.
Although the women included in this study pull from different
directions of the political spectrum, the shared dislocations of
travel and revolution help them to reimagine and to rearticulate
women’s political subjectivity; the experiences, reflections, and
self-representations they offer actively resist conventional
definitions of femininity and envision a place for women within the
British polity.

A EC50
Public concern has increased regarding the uncontrolled use of pesticides, including fungicides. Tebuconazol is a broad-spectrum fungicide that is used worldwide; however, its toxicity to phytoplankton is unknown. This work aims to evaluate the tebuconazol influence on the growth of four subtropical freshwater phytoplanktonic strains. Experimental cultures of Cosmarium depressum var. planctonicum, Desmodesmus communis, Pediastrum boryanum and Spondylosium pygmaeum were prepared with six tebuconazol concentrations (10, 100, 500, 1.000, 5.000 and 10.000 μg L-1), besides a control that was also prepared to measure the regular growth of each microalgae. The cultures (triplicates) were maintained for 13 days to determine both the growth (cellular density and chlorophyll-a content) and toxicological parameters. Tebuconazol inhibited the growth of all phytoplanktonic strains when they were exposed to 5.000 and 10.000 μg L-1. D. communis and P. boryanum were also inhibited when exposed to 1.000 μg L-1, while S. pygmaeum was inhibited since…

▼ Abstract: The oral cancer is a public health problem and was responsible for 13% of deaths worldwide in 2005. The application of screening techniques for identifying malignant lesions and malignant potential is a method that can be applied in order to detect individuals more vulnerable to disease, provide assistance early and thus reduce the damage. The objectives of this study were to analyze the reproducibility and diagnostic accuracy in screening tests for detection of oral cancer by dentists (CDs) in the population 40 years of age or older, enrolled in the family health program, implemented in 18 Basic Units Health of the Municipal Health Secretariat of São Paulo, under the management contract of the Casa de Saúde Santa Marcelina. For reproducibility analysis, primary data relating to the calibration performed using the methodologies in lux (30 images) and in vivo (560 patients), with 39 CDs, were collected. For the analysis of accuracy, secondary data relating to the screening performed by the same professionals in 653 patients were obtained. During calibration and tracking, the subjects were included in one of three categories: (0) soft tissue apparently healthy (1) changes in soft tissues without malignant potential and (2) changes in soft tissue with malignant potential. In the calibration method in lux, the value of inter Kappa was 0.67, sensitivity 93.72%, specificity of 77.56%, the positive and negative predictive value of 86.54 and 87.90 respectively and accuracy of 87.43%. In vivo calibration the value of inter Kappa was 0.45. In the case of tracking the CDs, the semiology confirmed that 276 (95.83%) had no oral lesions and 12 malignant lesions with suspicion of malignancy, and of these seven cases were confirmed as oral cancer. We conclude that the reproducibility of the diagnostic test can be assessed by in vivo calibration methodology found that a regular reproducibility (inter-examiner kappa of 0.45). The screening performed revealed a high-capacity CD clinician in diagnosing lesions in the oral cavity

In spite of not being a "new" phenomenon, Retranslation is an area that has not yet been fully studied. But nowadays is gaining more and more interest in literary circles, especially in the translation of old literary texts. We have to take into account that all translations are historical objects, which cannot be separated from the cultural, social, ideological and temporal context of the society that produces them. We must not forget that the context that influenced them is in constant development and change, affecting in a variety of ways, the way readers relate to and interpret them. The most common reason why translations are retranslated is related to the evolution and changes within a given language. In this way, Retranslation is seen as a way of updating "old" translations. And there are several debates surrounding the Retranslation of literary classics with the aim of updating them to the current vernacular. However, there are other factors besides language
changes that provoke the need to retranslate, such as: changes in the literary sensibility within a given society - the way it relates to and interprets literary productions; the emergence of new practices and ways of translating - with advances in translation studies, new ideas and concepts of what is a "correct" translation arise; ideological changes and sociocultural context - all translations are…

Psychic negativity exists for everyone, but it can invade both the dynamic and the economic aspects of the psyche, resulting in psychopathologies that are influenced by this invasion. Such a psychopathologic process could hinder the ‘interface’ role of the body through sensibility, and could largely prevent instinctual drives; symbolism and affect. Our hypothesis suggests that the clinical setting and technique should be adapted, with a body-mediated therapy. A study of 18 persons aims at evaluating repression efforts, alexithymia, sensibility at the level of the supporting points of the body and body representations, in supposed cases of ‘excessive psychic negativity. Four case studies focusing on follow-up therapy provide valuable insight on a case-by-case basis. As a conclusion, we make suggestions about theoretical and clinical reorganizations so that ‘excessive psychic negativity’ is taken into account in psychotherapies. For some persons, we think this ‘interface’ role is precisely what could produce a therapeutic effect.

The hallmark of oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy is a hypersensibility to cold that develops in nearly all patients ultimately leading to cessation of this chemotherapy treatment. To date, classical pain management strategies have failed to alleviate these painful symptoms, and hence there is a need for developing new and efficient analgesics. Here we report that, as in patients, oxaliplatin mediates a clear development of exaggerated perception of cold temperatures in mice. These symptoms are mediated by nociceptors expressing the thermoreceptor TRPM8. Mechanistically, we find that oxaliplatin promotes excitability in nociceptors drastically lowering the expression of distinct potassium channels (TREK1, TRAAK) that act as excitability brakes for cold perception, and by increasing the expression of pro-excitatory channels such as the hyperpolarisation-activated channels (HCNs). These findings are corroborated by the analysis of the TREK1-TRAAK null mice, and by the use a specific HCN channel inhibitor abolishing the oxaliplatin-induced cold hypersensibility. Collectively, these results suggest that oxaliplatin exacerbates cold perception in cold sensing neurons by transcriptionally remodeling a…

▼ This thesis draws the line of a rise and a fall, an ironic pattern whereby the English
stage of the long eighteenth century, in its relation to Shakespeare in particular, first
acquired powerful influence, and then, through the very effects of that power, lost it.
It also shows what contemporary literary criticism might learn from the activities that
constitute this arc of evolution.
My first chapter interrogates the relationship between text and performance in
vernacular writings about acting and editing from the death of Betterton in 1710 to
the rise of Garrick in the middle decades of the century. From the status of a distinct
tradition, performance comes to rely on text as a basis for the intimate, personal
engagement with Shakespeare believed necessary to the work of the sentimental
actor. Such a reliance grants the performer new potential as a literary critic, but also
prepares a fall. The performer becomes another kind of reader, and so is open to
accusations of reading badly.
My second chapter analyses the evolving definition of Shakespeare as a dramatic
author from Samuel Johnson onwards. An untheatrical definition of the dramatic
(Johnson’s) is answered by one which recognises the power and vitality of the stage,
especially in its representation of sympathetic character (Montagu and Kenrick). Yet
that very recognition leads to a set of altered critical priorities in which the theatre is,
once more, relegated (Morgann and Richardson).
My third and fourth chapters consider the practices and critical implications of
theatrical performance of Shakespeare during Garrick’s career. I focus on the acting
of emotion, the portrayal of what Aaron Hill called ‘the very Instant of the changing
Passion’, and show that performance of this time, attentive to the striking moment
and the transitions that power it, required from the actor both attention to the text and
preternatural control over his own emotions. In return, it allowed Garrick and others
to claim a special affinity with Shakespeare and to capture the public’s attention, both
in the theatre and outside it. Yet this situation, that of ‘twin stars’, does not last.
French and German responses to English acting, the concern of my last chapter, show
its decline particularly well. They also, however, show the power that existed in such
a union between page and stage, and equal weight is given in both my third and my
fourth chapter to how the theatrical-literary insights of eighteenth-century critical
culture might also illuminate modern approaches.

▼ The driving force behind the body of work of SPAN is defined by the application of advanced computational design methodologies. This dissertation can be understood as a cartography (in the best tradition of an atlas) of the work of the practice from its founding year 2003 until 2017 - a period profoundly shaped by the progress made in technological advances. These technological means allow SPAN to discuss architectural project through a series of different lenses such as conceptualization, planning, fabrication to the maintenance of the designed objects, through the use of emerging technical opportunities wither this be the interrogation of novel geometries (Blocks, Ore, Barcelona Recursion), computational methods of rationalization (Expo Façade) or advanced methods of fabrication (Robots, as for example in Plato's Columns). In a parallel move between the necessities and desires of the practice and the ambitious studios and seminars in academia, novel toolsets and design concepts are developed to address contemporary architectural problems. These areas can be understood as different territories of interrogation, forming a landscape of opportunities, or as we describe it internally in our office: a design ecology. The interrogation of these distinct territories, and the unique way in which SPAN assembles those various elements to something larger than its parts, is what constitutes part of SPAN's contribution to the discipline. Apart from projects and visual work, SPAN´s contribution to discourse started early with papers to conferences such as IASS (International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures) in 2007, Design Modeling Symposium in 2008, and ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) in 2008, which included ideas such as the application of tissue engineering in architecture, aspects of artifact and affect, fabrication, and considerations on architectural details in complex curved geometries. Within the Atlas of Sensations, a second ecology is defined by the contribution to the paradigm shift in the discourse from the continuous to the hyper-articulated surface, which contains an additional level of information. A surface, which describes architectural properties through the deep pochés, folds, joints, niches, and arches it generates. The question is: How does this shift in the conception of architecture affect the qualities of the design, and by extension the context these objects construct? To further investigate this question the work focuses on one part of the practice's design ecology: design sensibilities. In order to interrogate this question, the presented work observes these moments in SPAN's practice through the lens of geometrical properties. Ultimately resulting in thoughts on Postdigital design ecologies that discuss aspects of design agency in our contemporary age.

▼ This thesis argues for the inclusion of negative emotions, and more specifically, of anger, resentment and envy in the discussion of eighteenth-century Sensibility. It stems from the fact that negative emotion is underemphasised in the context of Sensibility due to its connections to valorised victimhood, religious ideals of virtue and the argument for the reformation of manners. By contrast, this thesis reveals the role and relevance of these emotions to the study of Sensibility, finding evidence in three major kinds of discourses: the theoretical and philosophical discourse, the novel, and physiological theories of the time. Offering readings informed by recent insights from the study of the history of emotions it shows how these emotions are included in the discussions of Sensibility by virtue of necessity. The philosophical ideal of Sensibility, being defined in opposition to negative and egoistic passions, needs to include them, at the very least in order to discount them. In its turn, this creates strict criteria of expression that apply to these emotions which, nevertheless, find their place in the novel. In the early novels of Sensibility expressions of anger and resentment are included because they are connected to notions of moral injury, insult and injustice. These notions resonate deeply within a culture of specified codes of honour and virtue that simultaneously vests the domestic locus with utmost importance and defines female and sentimental virtue in strict terms. Envy is also included in the novel due to its connotations of social disruption and the disparity with social visions of Sensibility. In physiology, a comprehensive model that appeals to notions of balance and motion – and not solely focusing on the nerve – finds a desirable aspect in anger as invigorating. This idea is extended as metaphor to the novel as well. Following these considerations, the thesis finds that it is not the categorical exclusion but rare and firm instances of negative passions that sustain notions and the genre of Sensibility by offering extended versions of the sentimental. Furthermore, it notes that these instances of negative passions enhance the relatedness of these works to modern sensibilities.

▼ Charlotte Smith’s work has an established relationship with
sensibility and the political and social issues of her day. However, Smith’s use of sensibility’s conventions against itself to create room for assertive femininity and eventually the realist genre has been overlooked. I explore two of Smith’s early novels to see how Smith unsettles cultural expectations through the use of sympathy. I argue first that Emmeline incorporates theatrical elements such as scene, character, and narrative to engage sympathy for an assertive woman. Then, I explore how Desmond incorporates distance to engage sympathy for the sentimental heroine, even as that sympathy is undermined by sentimental conventions. The failed sympathy challenges sensibility’s unreasonable expectations for feminine obedience. Both novels manipulate the genre of the sentimental novel to create sympathy, but that sympathy provides a critique that undermines the sentimental female role by providing them room for rationality and elements of independence.

Sensibility often relates to that part of man that is disreputable, subversive, refraining man’s total self-control in a civilisation obsessed with control, profitability and technoscience. The topic of sensitivity often limits itself to the fragmented approach of the culture of senses. That is the reason why we have focused our attention upon the epistemological angle in order to further understand what is at stake for the clinic and draw a valuable reflection out of it for education, whose result reveals the constant interaction between thought, practice, analysis and research. To achieve this, our methodology of research is centred upon a highly psychoanalytic approach, based on Lacan’s Borromean knot. Thus, we postulate that Man is fragile through his paradoxical dimension: he finds himself a sexual and mortal being making the most of himself through his incarnate dimension and is faced with a finiteness that binds him to the “notall”. Furthermore, he has such a rich potential drawn upon the ternary or three-dimensional dimension–i.e. soma (the body), psyche (the soul), pneuma (the spirit)–that he has become aware of his somatic, psychic as well as pneumatic potentialities. We want to highlight the fact that Sensibility has been regularly thought in terms of “duality” rather than a logic of ternarity. We propose that the Subject’s Sensibility be based upon a ternary, Borromean and paradoxical…

▼ The present study describes the stability and rheological behavior of suspensions of
poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan (PNIPAMCS),
and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)-chitosan-poly (acrylic acid) (PNIPAM-CS-PAA)
crosslinked particles sensitive to pH and temperature. These dual-sensitive materials were
simply obtained by one-pot method, via free-radical precipitation copolymerization with
potassium persulfate, using N,N -methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent.
Incorporation of the precursor materials into the chemical networks was confirmed by
elementary analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The influence of external stimuli such as pH
and temperature, or both, on particle behavior was investigated through rheological
measurements, visual stability tests and analytical centrifugation. The PNIPAM-CS particles
showed higher stability in acid and neutral media, whereas PNIPAM-CS-PAA particles were
more stable in neutral and alkaline media, both below and above the LCST of poly (Nisopropylacrylamide)
(stability data). This is due to different interparticle interactions, as well
as those between the particles and the medium (also evidenced by rheological data), which
were also influenced by the pH and temperature of the medium. Based on the results obtained,
we found that the introduction of pH-sensitive polymers to crosslinked poly (Nisopropylacrylamide)
particles not only produced dual-sensitive materials, but allowed
particle stability to be adjusted, making phase separation faster or slower, depending on the
desired application. Thus, it is possible to adapt the material to different media

This dissertation addresses the issue of technology in the work of Herbert Marcuse, explaning the merger between technology and domination that result in a totalitarian technological apparatus. Thus, technological civilization is supported and justified by a rational technological apparatus in the society, we have come not only the philosophy of Marcuse, but other great thinkers too, like Heidegger, Hegel, Marx. We also present a debate involving the philosophy of science, logic and linguage. Marcuse points to the need for a new technological rationality that emerge from a new sensibility, where the technique would allow a new relationship between man and nature. From then on, would emerge the need for a new subject. This transition would be possible by means of sensitivity, where art would become the art of live. With the link between art and technique made possible by new sensitivity, the author leaves one of its main contribution: he leaves open the possibility for the subject to choose new targests for technological development

▼ This dissertation addresses the issue of technology in the work of Herbert Marcuse, explaning the merger between technology and domination that result in a totalitarian technological apparatus.

▼ This dissertation examines how late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British novelists—major authors, Laurence Sterne and Jane Austen, and lesser-known writers, Pierce Egan, Charles Jenner, and Alexander Bicknell—challenged Henry Fielding’s mid-eighteenth-century critique of caricature as unrealistic and un-novelistic. In this study, I argue that Sterne, Austen, Egan, and others translated visual tropes of caricature into literary form in order to make their comic writings appear more "realistic." In doing so, these authors not only bridged the character-caricature divide, but a visual-verbal divide as well. As I demonstrate, the desire to connect caricature with character, and the visual with the verbal, grew out of larger ethical and aesthetic concerns regarding the relationship between laughter, sensibility, and novelistic form. This study begins with Fielding's Joseph Andrews (1742) and its antagonistic stance towards caricature and the laughter it evokes, a laughter that both Fielding and William Hogarth portray as detrimental to the knowledge of character and sensibility. My second chapter looks at how, increasingly, in the late eighteenth century tears and laughter were integrated into the sentimental experience. Sterne's readers wept sentimental tears for Tristram Shandy's (1759-1767) heartbroken Maria, but they also sought "delicate laughter" in the verbal and visual caricature of Dr. Slop. In the third chapter, I explore how Jane Austen's Persuasion (1818) mocks Sternean sensibility and its problematic idealization of fragile, female bodies by adapting tropes of visual caricature into literary form. The fourth chapter examines Pierce Egan's Life in London (1821), rarely read today, but hugely popular in the 1820s. Egan's protagonists are "men of feeling" who thrive on the thrills of "real life," which in the novel is best exemplified by caricature. The novelist follows in the comic realist tradition of Fielding, but embraces Sternean sensibility and its enthusiasm for caricature. Egan sees caricature and sensibility as interconnected, rather than opposed.
