Computers have been used in education for more than four decades and they have now been accepted unconditionally as an integral part of our entire educational system. The computer technology has a deep impact on education and the uses of computer are manifold. The advances in computer technology have caught the attention of many educators and researchers and they have found that it affects learner capabilities in positive way. Many psychological and educational researches have drawn attention to the crucial influence that computer attitude may have on children and adults to utilize opportunities of computer technology. Therefore, it is possible to suggest that to gain maximum benefit of computer technology, institutions should be aware of, explore, and monitor students attitudes toward computer. Mastering computer technology and harnessing it for widespread and comprehensive use among the students is not an easy task. This becomes even more challenging when this technology is progressing and changing rapidly. Students need to have the right kind of attitudes to be able to keep-up todate with the rapid changes that occur in computer technologies. newlineDeveloping positive attitudes among the students is more critical than merely increasing students computer skills because positive attitudes will automatically lead to the learning of computer skills (Divine and Wilson, 1997). Students attitudes toward computers must be clearly identified so that recommendations can be made to the relevant parties, such as, teachers, school administrators, administrators at the educational department level and also curriculum planning groups.The information will allow them to gain insights on best approaches to integrate computer technologies for teaching and learning. Consequently, Nash and Moroz (1997) supported the view that evaluation of computer attitudes is an important technique in response to the trend of computers becoming more centralized in education through integration.

▼ This thesis argues that student misbehavior, deep-rooted in a complex web of factors, is among the salient factors that affects the learning teaching environment and the personality and performance of the student him/herself. This in turns determines the academic achievement at secondary school level and even beyond. It also claims that mismanaged misbehavior has antisocial behavior as a detrimental outcome. In view of this, the study was conducted to explore and describe the nature, prevalence, trends, severity, causes and effects of student misbehavior along with the response mechanisms in Shashemene secondary schools. Primary and secondary data were collected and analyzed. Quantitative data obtained from the survey of sample students (360) and teachers (74) as well as qualitative information obtained from a total of 13 key informants and two FGDs constituted the primary sources of data. Complementary and/or supplementary data was also obtained from the review of literature and pertinent documents. The results revealed that student misbehavior that disrupts the classroom environment are highly prevalent. Nearly one in four students misbehaves in a year at Shashemene school. The problem of misbehavior is not only prevalent but also very stressful. Besides, misbehavior has been worsening across time. Meanwhile, assessment of the causative factors uncovered Parent, Student, Teachers/School related factors in their order of importance. Furthermore, it is almost unanimously agreed that misbehavior is a hindrance to the learning-teaching process in the school as it principally disrupts the learning-teaching environment. Effects on the student’s personality were also emphasized, though damaging property was the least important effect. Eventually, the findings on the school’s response mechanism uncovered problems and gaps that are much more pronounced. Among others, failure to device and enforce tailor-made disciplinary rules and regulations was the central tenet. In the end, the study draws conclusions, inter alia, on the prevalence, magnitude, trends, cause and effects of student misbehavior as well as on the problems associated with the school’s response mechanism. ▼ Sustainability is a word that is frequently used and often without the understanding that it warrants. An understanding of sustainability is vital today as people need to adopt strategies to cope with issues caused by environmental degradation, social inequity and economic disparity. Education for sustainability has gained momentum after calls by international bodies to provide a vehicle for change to prioritise sustainability and integrate sustainable development at all levels of education. This thesis investigates what secondary school students understand about the complex concept of sustainability. It explores students’ conceptions of sustainability, their views about sustainability issues and the relationship between the students’ conceptions and their views about sustainability issues. This research used a mixed method approach to collect quantitative and qualitative data from questionnaires and follow up focus group interviews. Open and closed questions were used to investigate students’ conceptions of sustainability and these were compared to conceptions of sustainability that educators and scholars regard as important for citizens to hold for a sustainable future. Students’ views about sustainability issues were explored using modification of semantic differentials that were directly related to principles of sustainability that had been drawn from the literature. Data gathered were analysed using a thematic approach and simple statistical tests. Findings showed that students in this study had some understanding of sustainability. A minority of students held simple, one dimensional conceptions of sustainability but a significant number of students held conceptions that were more complex and multi-dimensional in nature. There were no students who held the expert conceptions of sustainability that scholars and educators regard as important, where environmental, economic, cultural, social and political conceptions are interrelated within an inter-generational setting. Findings also showed that students’ views of sustainability issues, determined from a series of differential statements, indicated that the majority of students agreed or strongly agreed with the sustainable view for most of the environmental, economic, cultural, social, political and inter-generational sustainability issues presented to them. Comparison of these findings indicated that a student who held a more complex conception of sustainability, and was able to identify a number of conceptions of sustainability, is more likely to make a sustainable choice on an issue if given the opportunity. These findings are encouraging but, because of the importance of sustainability, they suggest a need to further develop students’ understandings of this complex concept. ▼ The objective of this study was to explore how senior mathematical students made sense of their mathematical experience through the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) qualifications system, and from that exploration to understand what factors motivated these students and to which factors these students attributed their mathematical success. The research is based on Constructivist Theory, with ethnomethodology as the methodological approach. The methodological tool utilised in the study was an online questionnaire. The students who completed the questionnaire attended an urban, co-educational, decile 8 secondary school in New Zealand. The participants were students aged 16 years old and over, enrolled in a full year NCEA Level 3 Statistics and Modelling Achievement Standards programme in 2013. The students in the sample were aware that there were set criteria within each grade for NCEA Level 3 Statistics and Modelling assessment tasks. The students were mindful that achievement was measured in discrete units. Evidence from the research suggests that to maximise student learning within the NCEA qualifications system, Level 3 Statistics and Modelling needs to be taught as a collective, cohesive statistics curriculum. The students in the sample attributed their highest mathematical outcomes to ability, effort and the teacher and their lowest mathematical outcomes to lack of ability, lack of effort and the level of difficulty of the assessment. The findings highlighted the importance of prioritising the teacher and student relationship. In the study, only 12% of students were convinced that their teacher was interested in them at an individual level. NCEA Level 3 Statistics and Modelling teachers need to be aware of the influence of the teacher and student relationship on student achievement. The findings from the research have implications for teaching and learning. The research evidence indicates a need for NCEA Level 3 Statistics and Modelling students to be aware of the nonnumerical content and grade criteria expectations of the Statistics and Modelling Achievement Standards prior to committing to the course.

▼ The secondary schools bursary scheme was introduced by the Government in the 1993/1994 financial year. It was issued directly from the Ministry of Education to schools to enhance access, ensure retention and reduce disparities and inequalities in the provision of secondary school education. In 2003 Ministry of Science Education and Technology in line with government policy on decentralization, devolution and empowerment of communities, suggested that from financial year 2003/2004, the funds would be administered to constituency and district levels (MOEST, 2003).Fortunately, the same year NARC government came up with a secondary school bursary scheme for the same purpose though it was by CDF with funds from the Ministry of Planning. In particular, both bursaries are targeted at students from poor families, those in slum areas, those living under difficult conditions, those from pockets of poverty in high potential areas, districts in Arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL), orphans and the girl child. This study sought to examine the impact of bursary schemes on retention of students in public secondary schools in Gem District. The study was guided by the following objectives: To assess how adequacy of bursary schemes fund impact on retention of students; to examine the extent to which consistency of bursary schemes fund impact on retention of students; to assess how socio economic background of students impact on retention of students in public secondary schools; to determine the level at which public sensitization on bursary schemes impact on retention of students. The study was guided by the theory of socialist economics of education. A theory whose proponent is Louis Blanc. The theory emphasizes the need to create an economy that redistributes income from the rich to the poor so as to create equality of being. The study sourced requisite data from 322 students‟ beneficiaries, 24 senior teachers and 12 Principals. The respondents were drawn using a combination of random and purposive sampling procedures. The study adopted descriptive design which was used to analyze primary data. Data was analyzed using frequency distributions, cross tabulations with SPSS and MS-Excel software packages. Qualitative data in form of experiences, opinions and suggestions, were analyzed using qualitative procedures and were used to strengthen quantitative findings. The results of the study indicated that majority of beneficiaries were funded from CDF 78% and then followed by SESBAF 14%.Similarly, other students received both 6%. Bearing this in mind it found out that the total fees was too high as compared to the bursary that this providers were giving out being KES 3000 for day scholars and KES 5000/8000 for boarders. Even so, there were very strong convictions that bursary schemes were only supplementing students‟ fees and not generally paying school fees wholesomely. ▼ ; Problem: Adolescents who begin abusing substances, including alcohol, prescription drugs, and illegal drugs often fail in school suffering life-altering consequences (Cox, Zhang, Johnson, & Bender, 2007). While plentiful research exists on substance abuse, there is a dearth of research on the school experiences of recovering substance abusers. There is a lack of awareness of ways for families, schools, and agencies to recognize potential roadblocks to guide every student toward a successful learning environment. Methods: Using a phenomenological approach (Creswell, 2007) the lived experiences (Van Manen, 1990) of recovering substance abusers’ secondary school experiences were explored. Using semi-structured interviews (Kvale, 1996), six adult males were interviewed 3 times (Seidman, 2006). Data collection consisted of verbatim transcriptions, my reflexive journaling and field notes, and member checks during and after the interview process. Open coding strategies (Strauss & Corbin, 1998) were used to determine emerging themes and commonalities. Findings: Participants’ accounts revealed seven key themes of their secondary school experiences. 1. Importance of parental, sibling, and child relationships on child wellbeing. 2. Impact of parental practices on development of the child academically and emotionally. 3. Importance of peer influence and peer relationships on student behavior. 4. Human need for connectedness and purpose. 5. Relationship between participation in extra-curricular activities and school success. 6. Link between student-school relationships, school success, and avoidance of substance abuse. 7. Initiation and progression of substance abuse. Conclusions: Participants experienced a lack of a sense of belonging in different phases of their lives, and within the different groups to which they belonged. Consequently, participants sought acceptance through negative peers groups and substance use, progressing to increasingly selfdestructive behaviors. They favored small school environments. The onset of substance abuse paralleled secondary school years resulting in academic decline, and failure to complete high school or post secondary education. Recommendations: Teachers may benefit from professional development on the emotional needs of all students using district resources to support programs at the elementary, middle school, and high school. Districts should collaborate and pool resources to provide services such as alternative programs. Importantly, individuals and families must have knowledge of and access to support available through programs that assist with family and parenting dysfunction, development of coping mechanisms, and early identification and treatment for substance abuse.

▼ Current knowledge of the information seeking behaviour of Māori secondary school students is extremely limited. The objective of this study was to determine how Māori students access and use information to make sense of the two worlds they live in. The research results demonstrated that they have a distinct preference for seeking information from other people, rather than print and electronic sources. A key part of the information behaviour involved exchanging and sharing information within and between social networks. Fisher’s information grounds theory was used to investigate and interpret the information networking behaviour. The study was conducted using a mixed methodology and determined that the students participated in social networks in three different zones, at school, in social and virtual settings, and cultural situations. Each of these zones has sub-areas where information sharing and exchange transactions take place. At school the sub-areas are in formal and casual situations, and in the hostel zone. The social zones include shopping malls, foodcourts, ‘downtown’ destinations, cafes, parties, church and virtual environments. The cultural zones were identified as marae and whānau dwellings. The research results revealed that Māori students encounter a wide range of barriers in the process of seeking information, including not always being able to access the information they want due to its ‘unavailability’, or their perception that the information is incorrect. Access to information technology and the internet remain significant barriers for students to overcome. The study revealed that the types of barriers encountered by students varied according to the cultural context they were seeking the information in. It was found that individuals that have strong sense of their Māori cultural identity have an inner confidence that leads to them experiencing fewer information barriers when seeking information in the two cultural worlds they are part of. The study concludes by presenting a model that is created from the research data and is based on three tikanga Māori principles: the principle of kaupapa whakakaha (strength), the principle of kaupapa tuakiri (identity) and the principle of kaupapa atawhai (humanity). The principle of kaupapa whakakaha includes the values of rangatiratanga (self-determination), whakamana (status), pono (trust), wairuatanga (spirituality) and whakamowai (humility). The principle of kaupapa tuakiri includes the values of whakapapa (legitimacy), iwitanga (tribal pride), te reo (language), whanaungātanga (relationships) and kotahitanga (unity). The principle of kaupapa atawhai includes tau-utuutu (reciprocity), awhina (assistance), rehia (enjoyment) and tautoko (support). This model demonstrates that indigenous (in this case Māori) values are important factors in the successful sharing and exchange of information between Māori secondary school students. The purpose of this study was to determine specifically how student achievement by the students who enrolled in Florida Virtual School classes compared to the student achievement of districtstudents enrolled in the same classes in traditional settings; and was theinstruction of district students via the Florida Virtual School acost-effective approach during the three years of the study? To answer these two questions, thisdissertation examined relevant data, primarily from the Florida Virtual School, the selected school district, and the Florida Department of Education as wellas from the College Board™. As Florida’s public school system demands andexpects increased access to online and virtual options for its students, it isimportant for districts to understand the full impact of this movement toinform future policy decisions. ▼ Studies of writing process over the last 40 years have clearly shown that effective revision marks the difference between the skilled and the unskilled writer. Early research also showed that school and college students typically revised little and at superficial levels, so that the scope for improvement of writing was limited. The apparent failure of student writers to revise more substantively has been variously explained. On the one hand it is suggested that adolescent writers may lack the cognitive and metacognitive resources necessary for effective revision (Flower & Hayes, 1980; Bereiter & Scardamalia, 1987; Kellogg, 2008) and on the other that school models of composition may not adequately support critical reflection or reconceptualisation (Emig, 1971; Sommers, 1980; Yagelski, 1995). However, there are marked gaps in the evidence base concerning students’ current understanding and practice of revision, particularly at secondary level. There have been few recent school-based studies and almost no examination of adolescent writers’ perspectives on revising school writing. Post-National Curriculum studies in the UK are especially scarce. There is therefore insufficient empirical evidence to determine at what level secondary students now revise their writing or to explain the problems and opportunities they may encounter in the attempt. This is especially important in the context of national concern about standards of attainment in writing and increased policy emphasis on the drafting and revising process. The current study adopts a case study approach to investigate secondary students’ understandings of the purpose and process of revising school writing, and the criteria by which they evaluate their success. It combines one-to-one observations of writing and post-hoc interviews with analysis of students’ texts over the course of a classroom writing task. The findings suggest that whilst the revisions of writers of different abilities were indeed primarily superficial, students did not necessarily lack the understanding or capacity to revise more effectively. Able writers attributed their limited practice to tightly prescribed assessment requirements and time-controlled writing conditions. They were also hampered by a dichotomous view of the choices available to them which caused them to set unnecessary parameters on their revising behaviours. These findings have important implications for practice and policy.

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship of intelligence scores with Age, Sex and school achievement of Secondary School Students in the Republic of Yemen. For this purpose the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test Advanced Level Form K (OLMAT) (1967) was adapted to suit the Yemeni environment. The sample of this study consisted of 1561 students. Of this, 801 were males and 760 were females; 682 were from the tenth grade, 466 were from eleventh, and 413 were from the twelfth grade. A total of 47 classes for both sexes were randomly selected: 24 classes for boys, ten classes for tenth grade, seven classes for eleventh grade, and seven classes for twelfth grade. Out of 23 classes for girls, nine classes were for tenth grade, seven classes were for eleventh grade, and seven classes were for twelfth grade. The researcher used the Otis- Lennon Mental Ability Test (OLMAT) advanced level form (K). The original OLMAT (80 items) was translated to Arabic language. Some items were changed and modified to suit the Yemeni culture. The Arabic adaptation of OLMAT was administered to the study sample. Difficulty values and discrimination values were estimated for each item. The reliability coefficients were obtained by test-retest method and split-half method for the entire sample and for different grade levels. Construct, concurrent and discriminant validity were established and were found to be significantly high. The reliability and validity results revealed that the Arabic version of OLMAT advanced level form K was highly reliable and valid. Age norms and grade norms were derived for the entire sample and for different age and different grade levels by various types of scores: Percentile Ranks, z-scores, T-scores, Deviation IQ (DIQ) and Stanines. The differences between students scores in intelligence in different age groups were tested using ANOVA, and the differences in intelligence scores between males and females and between high and low school achievement were tested using t- test. The relationship (Point-biserial correlation, Pearson correlation coefficient) between intelligence students’ scores and their age, sex and school achievement was tested. The multiple regression analysis helps to predict school achievement by using different subtests of intelligence (mental ability). The results of the differences between intelligence (mental ability) scores of students according to their age show that there were significant differences between all of mean scores for all age levels except between 15 and 16 year old students in subtests of verbal comprehension and figural reasoning and 18 and 19 years old students for the total test and for each subtest.
