▼ This work considers initiation of nonlinear waves, their propagation, reflection, and their interactions in thermoelastic solids and thermoviscoelastic solids with and without memory. The conservation and balance laws constituting the mathematical models are derived for finite deformation and finite strain using
second Piola-
Kirchoff stress tensor and Green's strain tensor. The constitutive theories for thermoelastic solids express the
second Piola-
Kirchoff stress tensor as a linear function of the Green's strain tensor. In the case of thermoviscoelastic solids without memory, the constitutive theory for deviatoric
second Piola-

second Piola-
Kirchoff stress, Green's strain tensor, and its material derivative. Fourier heat conduction law with constant conductivity is used as the constitutive theory for heat vector. The mathematical models are derived using conservation and balance laws. Alternate forms of the mathematical models are presented and their usefulness is illustrated in the numerical studies of the model problems with different boundary conditions. Nondimensionalized mathematical models are used in the computations of the numerical solutions of the model problems. All numerical studies are performed using space-time variationally consistent finite element formulations derived using space-time residual functionals in which the
second variation of the residuals is neglected in the
second variation of the residual functional and the non-linear equations resulting from the first variation of the residual functional are solved using Newton's Linear Method (Newton-Raphson method) with line search. Space-time local approximations are considered in higher order scalar product spaces that permit desired order of global differentiability in space and time. Extensive numerical studies are presented for different boundary conditions. Computed results for non-linear wave propagation, reflection, and interaction are compared with linear wave propagation to demonstrate significant differences between the two, the importance of the nonlinear wave propagation over linear wave propagation as well as to illustrate the meritorious features of the mathematical models and the space-time…

▼ From 2019 onwards, airline pilots will be required to follow stall training in simulators. A major open research question is which level of model fidelity is required for effective training. As part of an effort to answer this question, a stall model of a Cessna Citation II aircraft is developed from specifically-gathered flight test data. The model is based on Kirchoff’s theory of flow separation. During identification, the nonlinear and linear parameters of the model are estimated in separate steps. This distinction enables the application of a semi-objective model structure selection method using multivariate orthogonal functions. It is shown that stall-related effects should be included in the model equations for lift, drag, and pitch moment. The model parameters are accurately estimated, and model output is validated around a flight condition of 5,500 m altitude. The developed methodology is concluded to be well-suited for stall model identification of small business jets.

The objective of this thesis is to give an introduction to the concept of measures of cycles and to the concept of Discrete Gaussian Free Field (DGFF) showing the main theorems and sorne interesting relationships between both concepts.
In the Introduction we briefly mentioned the importance of the topic of measures of cycles at present.
In the first part of chapter 1 the measurement of cycles is defined and the main theorems on this concept are shown. In the second part of this chap ter an application in graph theory is presented, this application consists of a modern proof of Kirchoff's theorem, which gives us an expression for the amount of expansion trees that can be formed in a finite graph and related.
In the last two chapters the concept of discrete Gaussian free field is in troduced and is related to the measurement of cycles. In the chapter 2 we define the discrete Gaussian free field, we show the main theorems and a first relation with the measurement of cycles by means of the partition function.
Finally, in chapter 3, a more elaborate relation between the discrete Gaus sian free field and the measure of cycles is present.ed by the construction of a random vector known as "continuous occupation field" which results in a distribútion equal to the square of the discrete gaussian free field.

The perception and production of prominence in Spanish by heritage speakers and L2 learners.
Degree: PhD, Spanish, 2016, University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign

▼ Heritage speakers (i.e., descendants of immigrants that speak an ethnic minority language in a society where a different language is spoken as the majority language) are linguistically a unique population, because, while their early and immersed exposure to the heritage language puts them in an advantageous position with regard to their linguistic knowledge of the language, compared to those who learned it as adults, lack of intergenerational transmission is evident in this population, as demonstrated in the shift to the majority language of the society. Recently, the attempt to examine heritage speakers' linguistic knowledge from an acquisitional point of view has increased significantly, which has led to the creation of "heritage language acquisition" as an independent field of study. However, compared to other linguistic subfields, such as syntax and morphology, phonology has been an understudied area in heritage language research. Although phonology is the field in which heritage speakers have the most noticeable advantage over
second language (L2) learners, their speech is nonetheless often perceived as accented by monolingual native speakers, which makes their speech unique in its own right. Thus, research on heritage language phonology is needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of heritage speakers' linguistic system.
This study examines U.S. Spanish heritage speakers' perception and production of two types of prosodic prominence in Spanish: word-level prominence (i.e., lexical
stress), marking paradigmatic contrast (e.g., Canto. 'I sing.' vs. Cantó. 'He/She/You (formal) sang.'), and sentence-level prominence (i.e., nuclear
stress), marking information status and focus (e.g., ¿Qué hizo Mariana? - Mariana cantó. 'What did Mariana do? - Mariana sang.' vs. ¿Quién cantó? - Cantó Mariana. '‘Who sang? - Mariana sang.'). Although lexical
stress and nuclear
stress exist in both Spanish and English, due to cross-linguistic differences between the two languages, English L2 learners are found to have great difficulties acquiring them in Spanish. The overarching goal of this study is to examine whether transfer from English (i.e., the majority language) is also observed in heritage speakers.
Spanish monolingual native speakers, Spanish heritage speakers, and English L2 learners of Spanish participated in four experimental studies: two forced-choice identification tasks for the perception of lexical
stress and nuclear
stress, a reading aloud task for the production of lexical
stress, and a simulated interactive elicitation task for the production of nuclear
stress. Results showed that, while the heritage speakers performed similarly to the monolingual speakers in the perception of lexical
stress and nuclear
stress, they showed a deviant pattern in their production, such as early alignment of f0 peak and elongation of unstressed final vowels in the production of paroxytones (lexical
stress), and early alignment of f0 peak in the production of focused constituents (nuclear
stress). Heritage speakers' discrepancy…

▼ The rotational rheometer (cone-and-plate or parallel plates rheometer) is one of the most effective devices for measuring rheological properties of the viscoelastic liquid: the viscosity (?), the first normal stress difference (N?). However, it has been found practically that some errors were potentially associated with this type of rheometer: The “axial compliance error” is due to the use of linear-variable-displacement-transducer (LVDT) for first normal stress (N?) measurement, and it is potentially significant in the time-dependent material response measurement. Secondly, the low natural frequencies of sensitive LVDT springs fail in recording the high frequency response of a material. Lastly, misalignment of the sample holder (cone and plate) will change the geometry of the sample. These errors were quantified by performing rheology studies with the LVDT detached and a novel device fabricated with Micro-Electronic-Machining-System (MEMS) technique. The device is a pressure sensor plate of 25mm in diameter. It contains eight miniature capacitive pressure sensors, allowing measurements of the radical pressure profile, from which both the first normal stress (N?) and the second normal stress (N?) can be calculated. The apparent response time of N? to start-up of NIST-1490 shear flow was measured. The apparent response time was longer being measured with the LVDT than being measured with the pressure sensor plate, indicating that significant axial compliance errors were present during LVDT measurements. The natural frequency of the LVDT was lower than the high frequency behavior of the tested fluid NIST-1490. A slight cone-plate misalignment, smaller than the manufacturer?s suggested limit, developed a sinusoid-shaped radical pressure profile of the Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), corresponding to the axial plane of the tilt. However, this misalignment error can be reduced significantly by averaging the pressure profiles over clockwise and counterclockwise rotation manners. With the pressure sensor plate, the normal stress ratio, ¥= - N?, was measured to be 0.189 for PDMS. ? N?

▼ Numerous physiological changes occur during periods of high
stress and learning Spanish as a
second language in a classroom setting may induce significant levels of academic
stress. A possible solution is the use of therapy dogs in
second language classes since therapy dogs are known to lower
stress and improve physiological measures such as heart rate and blood pressure. Data were collected from 18 University of Tennessee-Knoxville juniors and seniors. A within subjects design required participants to listen to a short Spanish lesson during three conditions: baseline, therapy dog, and no therapy dog. In all conditions, saliva samples were collected to test for cortisol levels and three surveys (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, Life Orientation Test, and General Self-Efficacy Scale) were completed. Phonological learning was measured during the last two conditions. Two Spanish instructors evaluated each participant’s phonological accuracy using a 5-point Likert scale. Cortisol assays were completed with the saliva samples. Repeated measures ANOVAs and correlational analyses were performed on all data. Results were mixed and largely non-significant. Mean phonological scores were higher for the therapy dog condition but statistical significance was not achieved. Cortisol levels decreased significantly for each subsequent condition, suggesting that
stress was reduced with the passage of time and acclimation to the experimental environment. FLCAS scores were lowest when the therapy dog was present, but the difference was not significant. Findings suggest that therapy dogs do appear to reduce some aspects of
stress and improve phonological learning to a small extent. Further studies using measurements that may better capture the
stress-relieving abilities of therapy dogs and how that reduced
stress may improve
second language learning are suggested.

▼ This dissertation project examined the influence of language typology on the use of segmentation cues by
second language (L2) learners of English. Previous research has shown that native English speakers rely more on sentence context and lexical knowledge than segmental (i.e. phonotactics or acoustic-phonetics) or prosodic cues (e.g., word stresss) in native language (L1) segmentation. However, L2 learners may rely more on segmental and prosodic cues to identify word boundaries in L2 speech since it may require high lexical and syntactic proficiency in order to use lexical cues efficiently. The goal of this dissertation was to provide empirical evidence for the Revised Framework for L2 Segmentation (RFL2) which describes the relative importance of different levels of segmentation cues. Four experiments were carried out to test the hypotheses made by RFL2. Participants consisted of four language groups including native English speakers and L2 learners of English with Mandarin, Korean, or Spanish L1s. Experiment 1 compared the use of
stress cues and lexical knowledge while Experiment 2 compared the use of phonotactic cues and lexical knowledge. Experiment 3 compared the use of phonotactic cues and semantic cues while Experiment 4 compared the use of
stress cues and sentence context. Results showed that L2 learners rely more on segmental cues than lexical knowledge or semantic cues. L2 learners showed cue interaction in both lexical and sublexical levels whereas native speakers appeared to use the cues independently. In general, L2 learners appeared to have acquired sensitivity to the segmentation cues used in L2, although they still showed difficulty with specific aspects in each cue based on L1 characteristics. The results provided partial support for RFL2 in which L2 learners' use of sublexical cues was influenced by L1 typology. The current dissertation has important pedagogical implication as findings may help identify cues that can facilitate L2 speech segmentation and comprehension.

▼ The study and development of high resolution numerical approximations for the modeling and simulation of multiphase flows in petroleum reservoirs is still a challenge, from the computational viewpoint, due to the difficulties posed by some physical features such as heterogeneity and anisotropy of the medium, that are of paramount importance in this class of applications. Several methods have been proposed in the past that are based on FD (Finite-Difference), FV (Finite-Volume) or FE (Finite-Element). These methods, in their classical formulations, are of low order of approximation and suffer excessive smearing at saturation front introducing error into the numerical solution. These deficiencies can be mitigated or suppressed using highresolution methods such as the k-exact or ENO (Essentially non-Oscillatory) FV methods, which require large stencils to reconstruct high order polynomial within a control volume, resulting in an increase of the storage requirements and computational cost. On the other hand, over the last decades DG (Discontinuous Galerkin), SV (Spectral Volume), SD (Spectral Difference) and FR (Flux Reconstruction)/CPR (Correction Procedure via Reconstruction) methods were developed, which can achieve high order accuracy via a compact stencil consisting of the current cell and its immediate neighbors. In addition, the FR/CPR recovery simplified versions of nodal DG, SV and SD methods by choosing an adequate polynomial reconstruction function, whose coefficients are preprocessed and stored. The focus of this work is to investigate and to apply a very high resolution CPR method for the discretization of the saturation equation, which is generally advection-dominated and that results from the modeling of the 2-D Oil-Water displacement through porous formations. In order to suppress numerical oscillations (under/over shoots) near shocks that are typical in higher order schemes, and handing the high accuracy in smooth regions of the solution a hierarchical multi-dimensional limiting strategy (MLP) is used in the reconstruction stage. The integration in time is carried out using a third-order Runge-Kutta method. To solve the pressure equation a non-orthodox cell centered MPFA-D (Multipoint Flux Approximation-Diamond type) finite volume method is employed. In order to properly couple the MPFA-D method with the CPR formulation, it is necessary to obtain an adequate velocity reconstruction throughout the control volumes of the mesh. Because the cell-centered finite volume method naturally delivers fluxes across cell faces that belong to the primal grid, a reconstruction operator based on the lowest Raviart-Thomas interpolation functions and the
Piola transformation is built, to get the complete knowledge of conservative velocity field throughout the domain. The reconstruction operator receives, as input, the density fluxes across control volume faces and returns the point-wise values of velocity anywhere within the cell. Finally, the coupling of the pressure-saturation system of equations is carried out using a…

▼ The combined in vitro and in vivo results presented
in the thesis can be summarized as follows: Comparison of DPPH
scavenging activities of methanol and EO extracts of NS seed powder
with pure TQ and pure LMN, two constituents of EO, used in the
present study, revealed that they directly reacted with and
quenched DPPH radicals in a concentration dependent manner in the
order ME gt pure TQ gt EO extract gt pure LMN. It is noteworthy
that among the four test fractions/compounds, ME had the strongest
DPPH scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 40 µg/ml, followed
by 58 and 86 µg/ml for pure TQ and EO extract, while an IC50 value
of 8.5 mg/ml was obtained for pure LMN. These results established
that ME of NS seeds exhibited 115 % and 45 % higher antioxidant
capacity than EO extract and pure TQ. This is apparently due to the
presence of all the nonsaponifiable antioxidant compounds of
hydrodistilled TQ rich EO as well as additional mixture of
phytosterols and other antioxidants, which are also fractionated in
ME, as NSF, during extraction of NS seed powder with methanol.
Thus, ME enriched with all the nonsaponifiable DPPH radical
scavenging agents of TQ rich EO extract plus good amount of mixture
of phytosterols which evidently contributed independently or
synergistically with TQ to substantially enhance it s total
antioxidant efficacy. Daily 10-min exposure of CS to rats for 30
days was associated with increased ROS production, lipid
peroxidation and hyperlipidemia in plasma, erythrocytes and liver
with depletion in overall plasma antioxidant capacity, significant
weakening of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant defense systems
in erythrocytes and liver. Exposure of erythrocytes to these
prooxidant conditions caused decreases in activities of SOD, CAT,
Gred, total and Na+/K+-dependent ATPases, along with both free and
membrane-linked-sulfhydryl groups of glutathione, coupled with an
increased Gpx activity, oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and GSSG:GSH
ratio levels, which may be due to their increased
utilization

▼ As of 2016 the number of international students in the United States has reached over one million. Institutions of higher education in the United States have been attracting increasing numbers of international college students, primarily from China and other Southeast Asian countries. As a result, organizations such as the Institute of International Education have encouraged colleges and universities to create pathway programs. Pathway programs accept international students who do not have strong English language and/or academic skills, yet have a desire to study abroad. These students take English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at the university before beginning their degree courses. Some program models also have students taking their first-year courses apart from the rest of the student body to help these students close their skill gaps. However, this study focused solely on a pathway program that offers only ESL courses. Previous studies have shown that students who have academic language proficiency, yet lack the ability to integrate socially, often struggle with acculturation. This, in turn, can lead to problems with persistence in their course work and ultimately lack of degree completion.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the social integration of international Chinese students comparing those who participated in the ESL program and those that did not at the subject university. The study examined the influence of this treatment on college retention and on self-reported social integration of international Chinese students.
The study findings demonstrate that international Chinese students at this subject university who have received the intervention persist, having similar graduation rates compared to the general cohort, similar retention rates to the general cohort; and equal to or declining grade point averages based on the treatment-level.
The study also shows that the ESL students have less acculturative stress and are more socially active in their college community than the non-ESL students. The effects of this social intervention have been positive not only at the start of their degree programs, but carry through their program. The study presents evidence as to the benefits the treatment offers towards persistence at this university, which supports pathway programs.

The perception of Spanish lexical stress in yes/no questions and exclamations by Japanese-speaking late learners: evidence for the effect of context of learning.

▼ Whereas the acquisition of Spanish lexical stress by English-speaking learners has received some attention (Face, 2003; Lord, 2001; 2004; Marasco, Steele, Sunara, & Colantoni, 2012), very little is known about the perception of Spanish lexical stress by Japanese-speaking learners (Atria, Kimura, Sensui, Takasawa & Toyomaru, 2012). Specifically, little is known about the perception of Spanish lexical stress in interrogative and exclamative sentences by Japanese-speaking learners. The language pairing is novel and lends itself well to the study of perception of stress because whereas Spanish is a stress-accent language, Japanese is a pitch-accent language, where stress is acoustically realized differently in each language.
This study has three goals. First, it seeks to make an empirical and a theoretical contribution to the field of second language phonology by examining the perception of Spanish lexical stress by advanced Japanese-speaking learners of Spanish. In particular, it aims to examine and compare the perception of paroxytone (limite; he limits) and proparotytone (límite; limit) words in sentence-final and non-final position of both yes/no questions and exclamations. Subsequently, it will determine, how the L1 (first language) Japanese prosodic system may interact with the variation in the realization of F0 peak displacement in the latter contexts in Spanish. The study also examines the effect of context of learning as well as type of words.
The participants consisted of 45 advanced Japanese-speaking late learners of Spanish (20 in Bogotá and 25 in Japan). Their ages varied between 22 and 50 years old. The control group consisted of 20 native Spanish speakers of Bogotá Spanish. The three groups were required to participate in a stress identification task. Nine sets of 3 syllable accentual minimal triplets with each having an oxytone (e.g., nabidó), a paroxytone (e.g., nabido) and a proparoxytone (e.g., nábido) were used. The participants listened to the target words in five different contexts: isolation (e.g., medico), final position of yes/no questions (e.g., ¿él dijo límite?), final position in exclamations (e.g., ¡él dijo válido!), non-final position of yes/no questions (e.g., ¿él dijo medicó ayer?), and non-final position of exclamations (e.g., ¡él dijo medico ayer!).
Results show that learners have difficulty perceiving the Spanish lexical stress, indicating that the interaction of the Japanese and Spanish prosodic systems lead to the misperception of lexical stress. The recorded stimuli produced by a native speaker of Bogota Spanish are analyzed acoustically and the variation in F0 peak displacement in different prosodic contexts is discussed as a potential factor for miscuing the learners. Moreover, results show an advantage for the Bogota L2 (second language) group, who had been immersed in Colombia in comparison with the Japan L2 group, who had received classroom instruction in Japan. Furthermore, there was no effect of type of word (i.e., real vs, nonce word). The study has implications for models of…

▼ The dynamics of a single underwater vehicle in an ideal irrotational fluid may be modeled by a Lagrangian system with configuration space the Euclidean group. If hydrodynamic coupling is ignored then two coupled vehicles may be modeled by the direct product of two single-vehicle systems. We consider this system in the case that the vehicles are coupled mechanically, with an ideal spherically symmetric joint, finding all of the relative equilibria. We demonstrate that there are relative equilibria in certain novel momentum-generator regimes identified by Patrick et.al. "Stability of Poisson equilibria and Hamiltonian relative equilibria by energy methods", Arch. Rational Mech. Anal., 174:301 – 344, 2004.

▼ This study deals with the design and application of Scripture-founded pastoral guidelines as aid or supplement to existing work stress interventions for the effective management of teacher stress as it especially manifests in Second Language Teaching situations.
Important questions addressed regarding this topic amongst others include the following:
• Which perspectives can be deduced from Scripture with regard to work ethic, work stress and work stress management?
• What does work stress in teaching mean and what support systems are available for teachers in practice, especially as the problem occurs in the profile of a Second Language Teacher?
• How effectively do the support processes for Second Language Teachers with work stress in secondary schools run?
• Which pastoral guidelines can be offered for the management of teacher stress as it features in the profile of Second Language Teachers?
The research of the study is structured according to the model of Zerfass, as designed for Practical Theology.
The basis theoretical research clearly indicates that applicable pastoral guidelines can be deduced from Scripture as the foundational source regarding the effective management of work stress. These pastoral guidelines are identified and described by focussing on the appearance of work stress in key figures in Scripture such as Joseph, Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, Peter and Paul, as well as God's intervention and support in their different situations. God executed His plans through the different Bible characters in spite of their weaknesses and shortcomings, and this offers hope to current-day believers. The principles illustrated in the lives of the Bible characters can be applied to the lives of modern people. The following principles for work stress management are investigated through the mentioned Bible figures: Identity in God; Disciplining of thought; Delegation of work; Time management and setting priorities; Prayer and Divine support.
It is clear from the meta-theoretical research that English Second Language Teachers, especially in the South African context, should receive much more support since their work stress factors are more and are very unique to their subject.
There is a significant gap with regard to support bases or pastoral services for teachers in schools, in spite of there being several researchers that are of the opinion that work stress has a negative influence on teachers' mental health. It is precisely when external factors can not be controlled that the teacher should have the necessary skills for his own survival. Pastoral guidance focuses on the empowerment of the individual in an unfriendly work and living environment.
The empirical study comprised interviews with three Second Language Teachers who experienced problems with teacher stress. In addition, interviews were held with three different headmasters at secondary schools to establish which support systems are available for teachers. The participants indicated that their relationship with God, the Word and prayer carry them…

▼ Anxiety and stress invoked by the second language classroom setting has the ability to cause numerous detrimental physiological changes which impair the learning process. A more natural, “immersion” type atmosphere is often desired when teaching a second language; however, this is not typically possible with college classes. Therefore, the addition of therapy dogs to college second language classes may be a beneficial solution since therapy dogs are frequently cited as having the ability to lower stress and anxiety in many different settings. Stroking and interacting with a dog may reduce many markers of stress, including blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels. Data were collected from 12 University of Tennessee-Knoxville Spanish and psychology students using a within-subjects design. Following baseline testing, participants were taught three Spanish phonemes either with or without a certified therapy dog present. In all three conditions, saliva samples were collected and cortisol assays performed. A group of surveys which included the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), anxiety thermometer, Perceived Stress Scale-14 (PSS-14), Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and New General Self-Efficacy Scale (NGSES) were completed during each condition. Phonological proficiency was assessed by audio recordings made of participants reading sentences which contained the previously taught “target” phonemes. Two Spanish experts rated phonological proficiency using a Likert scale. Repeated measures ANOVAs, t-tests, and correlational analyses were conducted on all data. During the therapy dog condition, FLCAS and anxiety thermometer scores were significantly lower than in either of the other conditions. PSS-14 scores were significantly lower for both the therapy dog and baseline conditions than for the no dog condition. Self-esteem and self-efficacy were highest during the therapy dog condition, though significance was not reached for either SES or NGSES results. Cortisol results were not significant but were highest in the no dog condition. Finally, phonological results were not significant. Findings suggest that therapy dogs significantly reduce self-reported second language-specific anxiety, as well as general anxiety and general perceived stress. Further studies are suggested to assess whether therapy dogs may also significantly reduce cortisol levels and possibly improve second language phonological learning when sample sizes are larger.

In a first part, we propose an innovative methodology for image matching in the context of reservoir simulation. In order to build a model consistent with data collected on the field, we need to evaluate the error between seismic cubes obtained by simulation and seismic cubes acquired in the oil field. Using image processing tools, we develop a new formulation of the error. The application of this new formulation on synthetic reservoir cases demonstrates its efficiency. In a second part, we address the issue of designing two theoretically well-motivated registration models capable of handling large deformations since they are based on nonlinear elasticity. The shape to be matched are viewed as Ciarlet-Geymonat materials for the first model and as Saint-Venant Kirchhoff materials for the second one. We investigate the efficiency of the proposed matching model for the registration of mouse brain gene expression data to a neuroanatomical mouse atlas.

▼ Introduction: While many studies have documented the health outcomes of immigrants, little is known about the direct and intersectional influences of generational status on mental health. Methods: We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study using data from the California Health Interview Survey from 2015-2016 (N=41,754) to examine the prevalence of psychological distress (self-reported experience in the past 12 months) across generational status. We used log-binomial regression models adjusted for demographic and health-related factors to compare the likelihood of psychological distress among first-generation immigrants and non-immigrants relative to
second-generation immigrants, overall and across intersections of race, poverty status, and gender. Results:
Second-generation and non-immigrant respondents had a significantly higher prevalence (10.1% and 9.4%, respectively) of psychological distress compared to first-generation immigrants (5.9%). Generational status was not statistically significantly associated with psychological
stress; estimates for first-generation and non-immigrants relative to
second-generation immigrants were 0.81 (95% CI 0.63-0.04) and 1.12 (95% CI 0.84-1.50), respectively. Discussion: Though no statistically significant association was shown between generational status and psychological distress, the direction of estimates across iteratively adjusted models suggests a protective effect for first-generation immigrants. Further research is needed in bigger samples to explore associations between generational status and psychological distress, overall and across intersections of the population.

▼ Pre-mRNA splicing in plants is mechanistically the same as splicing in other eukaryotes, but its mode of intron recognition is unique. Whereas in animals a pyrimidine-tract contributes to the definition of exons, in plants, introns are defined by the boundaries of AU-rich intron and GC-rich exon. Some of these differences may depend on splicing factors mediating recognition of the unusual sequence-dependent transition points and/or factors mediating the first- and
second-steps in intron definition and excision.
The
second transesterification step of splicing involves many protein factors (
second-step splicing factors) that have not been previously characterized in Arabidopsis. Among these are numerous genes encoded by multicopy genes in this model plant: PRP16 (1 copy), PRP17 (2 copies), PRP18 (2 copies), PRP22 (3 copies) and SLU7 (3 copies). This work is aimed at defining the structural differences and expression patterns of these multiple
second-step splicing factors and their involvements in heavy metal
stress response.
The first goal of this project was to determine unique characteristics of the multicopy
second-step splicing factors and the tissue and developmental stages in which each of these genes is expressed. My studies have indicated that all of these
second-step splicing factors genes are expressed in Arabidopsis. While most are constitutively expressed throughout each tissue type and developmental stage, a specialized subset including PRP17-2, PRP18B, PRP22-3 and SLU7-2 are primarily expressed in flower and silique tissue in four-week-old plants and throughout the entire seven-week-old plant. Each of these specialized genes has unique structural features when compared to their homologs, suggesting that they form unique spliceosomal networks. These include variations in sequence identity between each other and their homologs in other organisms. Additionally, homology modeling revealed specific sites in which changes in residues will likely contribute to their interactions with other proteins. For example, residues important for protein-protein interaction in ScPRP17 are unique on AtPRP17-2. Basic surface residues on ScPRP18 that contribute to interaction with ScSLU7 are in slightly different locations on both AtPRP18A and AtPRP18B and fewer in number on AtPRP18B.
The
second goal of this project was to determine the response of
second-step splicing factors to heavy metal
stress conditions (HgCl2, Hg(OAc)2, CdSO4, CuSO4 and ZnSO4). My studies have shown that plants subjected to increasing concentrations of Hg(OAc)2 and CdSO4 for three weeks from germination accumulate pre-mRNA transcripts of genes not
subject to alternative splicing. This effect is observed for some of the
second-step splicing factors and some genes that are involved in other cellular processes like plant defense and transcription regulation. In contrast, pre-mRNA transcripts of genes
subject to alternative splicing, such as the Ser/Arg-rich (SR) proteins involved in intron recognition, accumulate varied proportions of alternatively…

▼ Implementation of the ultrasonic
second harmonic generation has typically been
restricted to simple setups such as through-transmission or Rayleigh surface waves. Recent
research has evaluated the
second harmonic generation in P- and SV- waves reflected from
a
stress-free surface to enable the single-sided interrogation of a specimen. This research
considers the
second harmonic generation in an aluminum specimen, which is analytically
evaluated using an approach based on the perturbation method. Here, the model is chosen
to mimic an experimental setup where a longitudinal wave is generated at an oblique angle
and the reflected wave is detected using a set of wedge transducers. Due to mode conversion
at the interface of the wedge and the specimen, it is necessary to evaluate longitudinal and
shear waves, determining all
second harmonic waves generated in the bulk and at the stressfree
boundary. The theoretically developed model is then implemented in a commercial
finite element code, COMSOL, using increasing fundamental wave amplitudes for different
values of third order elastic constants. The results of this computational model verify the
analytical approach and the proposed measurement setup, taking into account assumptions
and approximations of the solution procedure. Furthermore, the computational model is
used to draw important conclusions relevant to the experimental setup, including the need
to avoid evolving surface waves and interactions with diffracted waves. These numerical
results are used to develop a recommendation for the measurement position and incident
angle. Finally, the nonlinearity of two different aluminum specimens is measured with
the suggested measurement setup and the results confirm the feasibility of the single-sided
determination of the acoustic nonlinearity using reflected bulk waves.

▼ When illuminated by a coherent light beam, a periodic object will be imaged
in near-field space at predictable intervals. This phenomenon is termed
self imaging. Recordings of the intensity distribution of sine-wave gratings
were made at several positions behind the gratings. The modulation of the
images was calculated and used as a predictor of distance from the grating.
Positional accuracies of one part in one-hundred fifty-eight were obtained.

▼ Mathematical theory of homogenization of partial differential equations is relatively a new area of research (30-40 years or so) though the physical and engineering applications were well known. It has tremendous applications in various branches of engineering and science like : material science ,porous media, study of vibrations of thin structures, composite materials to name a few. There are at present various methods to study homogenization problems (basically asymptotic analysis) and there is a vast amount of literature in various directions. Homogenization arise in problems with oscillatory coefficients, domain with large number of perforations, domain with rough boundary and so on. The latter one has applications in fluid flow which is categorized as oscillating boundaries.
In fact ,in this thesis, we consider domains with oscillating boundaries. We plan to study to homogenization of certain optimal control problems with oscillating boundaries. This thesis contains 6 chapters including an introductory Chapter 1 and future proposal Chapter 6. Our main contribution contained in chapters 2-5. The oscillatory domain under consideration is a 3-dimensional cuboid (for simplicity) with a large number of pillars of length O(1) attached on one side, but with a small cross sectional area of order ε2 .As ε0, this gives a geometrical domain with oscillating boundary. We also consider 2-dimensional oscillatory domain which is a cross section of the above 3-dimensional domain.
In chapters 2 and 3, we consider the optimal control problem described by the Δ operator with two types of cost functionals, namely L2-cost functional and Dirichlet cost functional. We consider both distributed and boundary controls. The limit analysis was carried by considering the associated optimality system in which the adjoint states are introduced. But the main contribution in all the different cases(L2 and Dirichlet cost functionals, distributed and boundary controls) is the derivation of error estimates what is known as correctors in homogenization literature. Though there is a basic test function, one need to introduce different test functions to obtain correctors. Introducing correctors in homogenization is an important aspect of study which is indeed useful in the analysis, but important in numerical study as well.
The setup is the same in Chapter 4 as well. But here we consider Stokes’ Problem and study asymptotic analysis as well as corrector results. We obtain corrector results for velocity and pressure terms and also for its adjoint velocity and adjoint pressure. In Chapter 5, we consider a time dependent Kirchhoff-Love equation with the same domain with oscillating boundaries with a distributed control. The state equation is a fourth order hyperbolic type equation with associated L2-cost functional. We do not have corrector results in this chapter, but the limit cost functional is different and new. In the earlier chapters the limit cost functional were of the same type.

▼ In this work the predictive capability of a number
of Reynolds
stress transport(RST) models was first tested in a
range of non-equilibrium homogeneous flows, comparisons being drawn
with existing direct numerical simulation (DNS) resultsand physical
measurements. The cases considered include both shear and nor-mally
strained flows, in some cases with a constant applied strain rate,
and inothers where this varied with time. Models were generally
found to perform well in homogeneous shear at lowshear rates, but
their performance increasingly deteriorated at higher shear
rates. This was attributed mainly to weaknesses in the
pressure–strain rate models, leading to over–prediction of the shear
stress component of the
stress anisotropytensor at high shear
rates. Performance in irrotational homogeneous strains was
generally good, and wasmore consistent over a much wider range of
strain rates. In the experimentalplane strain and axisymmetric
contraction cases, with time-varying strain rates, there was
evidence of an accelerated dissipation rate generation. Significant
im-provement was achieved through the use of an alternative
dissipation rate gen-eration term, Pε , in these cases, suggesting
a possible route for future modellinginvestigation. Subsequently,
the models were also tested in the inhomogeneous case of pul-sating
channel flow over a wide range of frequencies, the reference for
these casesbeing the LES of Scotti and Piomelli (2001). A
particularly challenging featurein this problem set was the partial
laminarisation and re-transition that occurredcyclically at low
and, to a lesser extent, intermediate frequencies. None of
themodels tested were able to reproduce correctly all of the
observed flow features, and none returned consistently superior
results in all the cases examined. Finally, models were tested in
the case of a plane jet interacting with a rect-angular dead-end
enclosure. Two geometric configurations are examined,
corre-sponding a steady regime, and an intrinsically unsteady
regime in which periodicflow oscillations are experimentally
observed (Mataoui et al., 2003). In the steadycase generally
similar flow patterns were returned by the models tested, with
somedifferences arising in the degree of downward deflection of the
impinging jet, whichin turn affected the level of turbulence energy
developing in the lower part of thecavity. In the unsteady case,
only two of the models tested, a two-equation k−εmodel and an
advanced RST model, correctly returned purely periodic
solutions. The other two RST models, based on linear pressure–strain
rate terms, returnedunsteady flow patterns that exhibited complex
oscillations with significant cycle-to-cycle variations.
Unfortunately, the limited availability of reliable
experimentaldata did not allow a detailed quantitative examination
of model performance.

▼ Objectives: To: (1) characterize exposure of wildland firefighters to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) in woodsmoke; (2) assess the utility of the relationship between
exposures to PM2.5 and CO in woodsmoke as a tool for exposure control; (3) investigate the effects of occupational woodsmoke exposure on lung function among wildland firefighters and (4) investigate the effects of occupational woodsmoke exposure on
oxidative stress by using urinary 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Methods: Time integrated and real-time PM2.5 and CO were monitored in the breathing zones of wildland firefighters working at prescribed burns. Concurrent
lung function measurements and urine samples for analysis of biomarkers of oxidative stress were also collected from the firefighters pre- and post-workshifts. Linear mixed effect models were used to estimate the correlation between workshift average
exposures of the firefighters. Across shift changes in lung function and biomarkers of oxidative stress and the effect of cumulative exposure on lung function were also analyzed using linear mixed effect models. Results: Although geometric means of
particulate matter exposure were below occupational exposure standards, they were at least 8 times the ambient air quality standard in the United States. Workshift averages of PM2.5 and CO were well correlated with each other (ρest=0.79, p<0.01).
There were no across shift changes in lung function and biomarkers of oxidative stress. However, each additional day of exposure was estimated to be associated with declines of 24ml in pre-shift FVC and 24ml in pre-shift FEV1 (p<0.01). There was also
evidence that across shift change in creatinine corrected 8-OHdG in the firefighters depended on the length of firefighting career or age of the subject (p<0.01). Conclusion: Wildland firefighters are exposed to elevated levels of PM2.5. Although
acute health response as measured by across shift changes in lung function and biomarkers of oxidative stress was not observed, there is evidence that cumulative exposure to woodsmoke may cause some longer term health effects.

▼ The purpose of this investigation was to compare the
oxidative
stress response to a standardized lunch preceded by a
first meal of rapidly digesting carbohydrate (CHO) versus a first
meal of slowly digesting starch. Subjects were screened to ensure
they were normoglycemic and had average aerobic fitness and body
composition. Participants reported to the lab on two occasions
following a 12 hr fast. Blood samples were obtained at baseline and
every 30 min for 4 hrs after consuming either 50 g of rapidly
digesting CHO (RDC) or slowly digesting starch (SDS). Participants
then consumed a standardized lunch and additional blood samples
were obtained every 30 min for 2 hrs after the
second meal. The
glycemic and insulinemic response to the first and
second meal in
RDC were significantly greater than SDS. The oxidative

▼ Three energy-related studies are described in this
thesis (1) studies on the capability of conducting polymers (CP) to
store electrochemical energy, (2) studies on the
stress evolution
of conducting polymers during their use, and (3) studies on
nanostructured metal surfaces and their use in the electrochemical
reduction of CO2. (1) Electrochemical energy storage (EES)
technology was explored using composites based on CPs such as
polypyrrole doped with redox-active moieties (pPy[Redox]).
Anthraquinones, viologens, nitroxyls and lignosulfonates were
investigated. Viologens were incorporated into a pPy film via two
approaches: covalent linkage to a pyrrole monomer or as a dopant
bound by electrostatic interactions. The use of viologen as dopant
in CPs enables a cell emf of 1V. Anthraquinones and lignosulfonates
also were tested as anode and cathode dopants, respectively, which
enabled the chemical synthesis of pPy[Redox] powders in gram
quantities, a significant improvement over sample quantities
generated electrochemically with other dopants (few micro or
milligrams). (2) Various applications of CPs are based on their
ability to undergo reversible redox chemistry, which is accompanied
by influx or efflux of counter ions and associated solvent
molecules. This repetitive flux of ions/solvent into and out of the
film results in its shrinking/swelling, eventually resulting in
delamination and device failure. The
stress as a function of
applied potential was studied in situ in thin films of CPs doped
with redox-active molecules. These measurements were correlated to
changes in mass as a function of potential using an electrochemical
quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The correlated
stress-mass
changes were used to identify the mechanism by which pH-dependent
redox-active dopants attenuate the
stress response of different
pPy[Redox] systems. (3) Electrochemical reduction of CO2 was
studied at nanostructured copper and tin surfaces.
Three-dimensional foam electrodes of copper and tin were
electrochemically synthesized with unique pore-channel structures
as elucidated from microscopy and electrochemical measurements.
Both metals were used as electrocatalysts for the electrochemical
reduction of CO2 and were found to have novel, often superior
performance than their planar counterparts. Electrochemical and
structural characterization studies were performed to explain the
observed phenomena.

behavior through activation of various inelastic deformation
mechanisms. Irrespective of the functionality, a fundamental
understanding of material response at smaller scales is essential
from the standpoint of performance and reliability during service.
In this thesis, the interplay between diffusion, deformation and
fracture in small scale structures is dealt with in the following
two topics: (i) compressive
stress evolution during Volmer-Weber
growth of a thin film of high mobility materials and (ii) crack
nucleation in Lithium-alloy battery electrodes during
charging-discharging cycles. In the former, by coupling the
constrained grain boundary (GB) diffusion model to the mechanism of
excess surface chemical potential during deposition which drives
adatoms into GBs, we study the effect of inhomogeneous GB
diffusivity on the formation of GB diffusion wedges and evolution
of compressive
stress during film growth. In the limit of infinite
surface and GB mobility, closed form analytical expressions for
stress evolution during deposition cycles are derived and are
successfully compared with the existing experimental data on Tin
film growth. The effects of film thickness, deposition rate and GB
mobility on transient
stress-evolution and thickness and steady
state
stress compare well with experimental observations. In the
latter, we have developed a cohesive model of crack nucleation in
an initially crack-free electrode under galvanostatic intercalation
and deintercalation processes for both 2D (strip) and axisymmetric
(cylindrical) geometries with solute transport during diffusion
induced stresses. The analysis identifies a critical characteristic
dimension below which crack nucleation becomes impossible,
suggesting that nanostructured electrodes are highly promising and
viable option for applications in high capacity batteries. In a
fundamental study of dislocation shielding of a Dugdale cohesive
crack, we have derived closed form asymptotic solutions in the
limits of high and low cohesive strengths. An important outcome of
the study is a transition in dislocation shielding behavior
depending on the cohesive strength; while the cohesive crack
behaves as a singular crack at very high cohesive strengths
(~7GPa), significant deviations from the singular crack behavior
arise at cohesive strengths around 1GPa.

▼ Stress is a known risk factor for a number of
neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression and addiction.
Characteristic of such disorders are deficits in
corticostriatal-mediated functions such as cognitive flexibility,
the ability to adjust previously learned behaviors in response to
changes in the environment. Previous studies show that
stress can
both impair and facilitate various corticostriatal-mediated
cognitive behaviors. However, understanding of the neural and
genetic substrates mediating these effects remains limited. The
present set of studies employed a touchscreen-based visual
discrimination-reversal task to investigate the impact of
stress on
reversal learning, and elucidate some of the important neural
systems involved. The first finding was that
stress facilitated
reversal learning in both a genetic strain-dependent (C57BL/6J,
DBA/2J, BALB/cJ) and
stress-protocol specific manner. In
non-stressed mice, excitotoxic lesions of the orbitofrontal cortex
impaired reversal, while lesion of the ventromedial prefrontal
cortex (vmPFC) facilitated reversal, mimicking the effects of
stress and suggesting a possible locus of the
stress effect.
Finally, microinfusion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)
into the vmPFC was found to be sufficient to ‘rescue’
stress-induced facilitation of reversal. Systemic injection of
7,8-dihydroxyflavone, a BDNF receptor agonist was insufficient to
robustly modulate the effects of
stress. While
stress is commonly
associated with cognitive impairment, the current studies add to a
more nascent literature demonstrating that
stress can promote
certain cognitive functions, including dorsal striatal-mediated
habits. A ‘competing systems’ model is proposed, in which
stress-induced vmPFC dysfunction promotes the adoption of
striatal-driven processes. This research highlights the complex
interaction between
stress and cognition, and extends our
understanding of the impact of
stress on higher-order executive
functions that govern our behavior.
