As algas da costa portuguesa apresentam grande diversidade e potencial económico, constatando-se um sub-aproveitamento deste recurso. O objectivo deste trabalho é desenvolver um conjunto de ilustrações para uma proposta de publicação que constitua um guia de identificação e localização das principais espécies de algas do litoral português. Pretende-se que estas algas, as que têm uma utilização mais prática em áreas como a alimentação e a saúde, sejam enquadradas num contexto de utilidade e valor. Tendo o público em geral como alvo, a identificação das espécies é, então, facilitada pelas ilustrações científicas, através de desenhos de exemplares individuais e registo fotográfico de conjunto no seu habitat; Seaweeds from the portuguese shore: practical uses in human nutrition and health - an illustrated guide Abstract: The purpose of this work is to develop a set of seaweed illustrations for a booklet project to be used as a guide, due to the largeness of the portuguese coast, the underestimated worth and diversity of its seaweeds, and its economical potential. This guide will help the identification and tracking of the main species which have practical applications in human nutrition and health, showing its importance and value. Having the general public as target, the identification of the species is given by scientific illustrations, as drawings for species identification, or photographs for visualizing its specific habitats as a whole. 2. Steiner, Elisabet. Visual Scientific Communication : The Use of Graphics in Contemporary Doctoral Theses.

Although we live in a society abundant with images, the subject of illustrations in scientific communication seems to have become a blind spot. The study of scientific communication is an interdisciplinary field, where written and visual language is studied separately from one another. The aim of this master thesis is to break with tradition and look at the use of illustrations, their form and frequency, in a random selection of Swedish contemporary doctoral theses to make an attempt to explain why some scholars do not use illustrations as much as others. The found graphics are discussed in their faculty and departmental context, and the aspects of page design, electronic availability, and publishing tradition are also included in this discussion. By looking at some activities surrounding the author of a doctoral thesis, such as writers’s manuals, computer graphic tools, and the role of librarians, proof was found to support a genre and activity theory, as described by Charles Bazerman. This study presents an overview of illustrations occurring in dissertations in a way that was not done before, opening up for further studies about the form and function of scientific illustrations as important carriers of information.

Fastän vi lever i ett samhälle som är översvämmat av bilder verkar vetenskapliga illustrationer vara ett ämne som förblivit ett slags blind punkt. Studierna av vetenskaplig kommunikation är ett interdisciplinärt område där det skrivna och visuella språket behandlas var för sig. Målet med denna D-uppsats är att bryta detta mönster och att undersöka bruket av illustrationer i en tillfälligt utvald samling svenska moderna avhandlingar för att se om det går att förklara varför en del forskare använder färre bilder än andra. De funna illustrationerna diskuteras i deras fakultets- och institutionssammanhang, och aspekterna sidutseende, elektronisk tillgång och utgivningssätt lyfts fram. Genom att titta på en del aktiviteter som omger författaren till en dissertation, som t.ex. skrivhandledningar, verktyg för datorgrafik och bibliotekariens roll, kunde bevis hittas för den genre- och aktivitetsteori som beskrivits av Charles Bazerman. Studien presenterar en översikt av förekommande illustrationer i doktorsavhandlingar som inte gjorts förut och öppnar vägen för nya studier om vetenskapliga bilders utseende och funktion som viktiga informationsbärare.

Given the importance of scientific illustrations to teach geosciences content, possible relationships between their educational potential and production stages was investigated. We have analyzed in the context of the "internal dynamics of the Earth", 119 illustrations textbooks Brazil, Spain, Italy and Portugal and have interviewed a group of 54 authors, editors and illustrators. In addition to classify types of illustrations, analyze the statistical distribution for teaching different subjects, we designed a protocol of “good practices” in order to help professionals linked to publishers and professors processes. Our expectation is that this work can contribute to the expansion of the potential use of scientific images in environments teach. The research was conducted under a joint supervision between the State University of Campinas, Brazil, and the University of Girona, Spain.
