The community of Mililani in Waipiʻo, ʻEwa, Oʻahu holds a beautiful heritage and identity unknown to many. A history of sacred lands including Kūkaniloko, Kīpapa, and Oʻahunui give this place its foundation in the center of Oʻahu. Significant figures including Māʻilikūkahi and Ioane "John" Papa ʻĪʻī paved the way for the many people of Waipiʻo who cultivated the rich resources. The story of Mililani is a prime example of the changes in Hawaiʻi over time. The erasure of the past in this land was majorly caused by developments now housing thousands of Oʻahu's population. A planned development should not mean a total disregard for what existed in the past, slowly removing the Kānaka Maoli sense of place. The Mililani community and all residents of Waipiʻo must understand the heritage of their home and recognize its importance in Hawaiʻi.

▼ Francesco Cavalli was the most renowned composer of opera in seventeenth-century Venice. Though Cavalli's operas have enjoyed a surge in popularity and interest in recent years, his sacred works remain largely unknown. Cavalli published only a small portion of his compositional output, and his Musiche Sacre Concernenti of 1656 contains the largest source of his acred music in concertato style, representing a fusion of his sacred and secular compositional worlds.
The purpose of this study is threefold. The first is to provide a modern performing edition of each motet governed by the same editorial principles that will serve scholars and performers by providing a performing edition based on the Gesamtausgabe tradition of complete works of a single composer. The second is to explore the musical, liturgical, and historical context and significance of his motets as pertains to executing an informed performance. The third is to promote the music of Francesco Cavalli in general.
The motets of the collection include eleven psalms, five hymns, the Magnificat, and the four Marion antiphons, employable in various Vesper services of the liturgical year.
Part I of this study will serve as the Critical Commentary to the edition. Chapter 1 examines Cavalli's life and work. Chapter 2 contains analyses of the motets. Chapter 3 discusses the liturgical contexts of the motets as well as the historical background of the collection in relation to Seicento Venice. Chapter 4 explores issues of performance practice such as ensemble size, voicing, the appropriate choice of instruments, pitch center, continuo practice, tempo, metric relationships, coronas, dynamics, and missing verses.
Part II will present the performing edition of each motet in full score with a critical report. Sources and editorial methods will be discussed, and detailed critical notes will be provided. Appendices including the motets' texts, translations, and instrumental parts are provided.

▼ This thesis explores the nature and dynamics of the relationship between Judaic holiness and Jewish teaching and learning practices. One way of examining this relationship is by focusing on sacred content. The contribution of this thesis is to go beyond sacred content to also focus on teaching as a sacred act - in other words, approaching teaching as sacred, rather than teaching the sacred. Findings build upon and reinforce existing literature on Judaic holiness, but make an original contribution by placing these perspectives in a specifically educative context. I investigated this relationship from an ethnographic perspective, attending three Orthodox Jewish learning communities (yeshivot) in Jerusalem over a period of six months. Acting as participant observer, I attended classes, studied with students, collected artifacts, took daily field notes and conducted in-depth qualitative interviews. As I analyzed fieldwork data together with relevant academic literature and sacred Jewish texts, a number of key themes emerged. These themes are described in three findings chapters. They outline methodological, experiential, teleological, relational, environmental, structural and theological dimensions of the sacred in Jewish educative practice. From the perspective of study participants, teaching and learning are not only related to the sacred, but themselves constitute a sacred act. While academic literature tends to focus on the human elements of sanctity, and confessional religious literatures on its theistic dimensions, this thesis illustrates a dynamic way of dovetailing these two approaches. Considered from the Judaic perspectives of study participants, the sanctity of teaching and learning is seen to be both contingent upon human, volitional action as well as a connection to God. Such actualized sanctification is believed to affect and even qualitatively alter the nature of educative methods, environments, encounters and, ultimately, the ontology and capacity of both teachers and learners. This has implications for educative practice more broadly conceived, including insights on the role of a teacher in the student-teacher relationship, an alternative perspective on learning outcomes, a remembrance-oriented epistemology, a teleological connection between teaching and learning and the value of struggle in the learning process.

▼ Notwithstanding the bourgeoning compendium of literature on Prayer Mountains (PMs), scholarly discourse on them in contemporary African and Ghanaian Christianity seems limited only to their role in enhancing pilgrims’ spirituality. Using Atwea Boↄ, Ͻboↄ Tabiri, Abasua Prayer Mountain (APM) and Nkawkaw Mountain Olive Prayer Camp (NMOPC) in Ghana as contextual examples, this study argues that scholarly focus on PMs as sacred spaces should not be limited only to the conventional thinking of them as sites of transcendent spiritual experiences, encounters with God or appearances by God. Rather, there are other aspects of PMs considered to be of academic importance with social policy implications, but which seem to have fallen out of scholars’ grasp. Therefore, the study generally focuses on rethinking PMs as sacred spaces in contemporary Ghanaian Christianity. Specifically, the work attempts to examine the continuity of Christians’ pilgrimage to PMs in Akan primal religious context. Also, it explores the historical narratives of the evolution of PMs in Ghanaian Christianity. Besides, it investigates how Pentecostal / Charismatic Christianity promotes the appropriation of PMs as sacred spaces in Ghanaian Christianity. Last but not least, the study examines the place of PMs in contemporary Ghanaian development discourse.
The research is theoretically anchored on Clifford Geertz’s social-anthropological model. Methodologically, it is mainly a qualitative study. A diverse approach, including historical, theological and phenomenological methods, was employed to guide the collection and analysis of relevant field data.
It has been observed that in Ghana, pilgrimage to sacred mountains in Akan primal religion appears to be a precursor of Christians’ religious pilgrimage to PMs. The quest for identity construction is a paramount motivation underlying pilgrimage to sacred mountains among the adherents of the two religions. Inspite of the continuity of the Christian phenomenon of PMs in Akan primal religion, the study underscores some discontinuities. Moreover, the historical narratives of the evolution of PMs in Ghanaian Christianity indicate that PMs as sacred spaces hardly evolve in a vacuum. They gradually emerge and ultimately develop into Christian sacred sites through the interplay of a diversity of religio-cultural, socio-economic and political forces. The study also reinforces Pentecostalism as a modern religious phenomenon that has had a great influence on global Christianity, including Christians’ pilgrimage to PMs. The prevalence of imprecatory prayer rituals on the PMs, akin to some aspects of traditional Akan religious practices, and the seeming endless theological contestations about those rituals underscore their centrality and sensitive nature in Christian theology. Furthermore, the study examines the interface between religion and development, with special focus on the place and relevance of PMs in contemporary Ghanaian development discourse.
In conclusion, the research presents two diametrically opposed…

▼ The current literature about
sacred space suggests that it is produced through either substantive definitions of space (the poetics of space) or situational definitions of space (the politics of space). I conducted ethnographic research in the Cook Islands to consider how these two constructions of space interact to produce the
sacred space of the Cook Islands Christian Church. I have shown that the production of
sacred space can be described through three modes of spatial production: the politics of space, the poetics of space and the performance of space. They are enacted through social practices in an inter-related process. Based on these findings I propose a spatial triad model. I suggest that by moving beyond traditional dichotomous constructions of space such a spatial triad model can contribute to new understandings of how
sacred and profane space is produced and reproduced.

▼ The
sacred and the profane: a dichotomy that can only exist through the thresholds within. In a world that's drowning in the profane, we yearn for the ephemeral, in which our mind, body, and soul emerge out of the mundanity of day-to-day life, and into something beyond. We search for the art, seek pilgrimage, and long for the symbols. The physical, emotional, and sensational thresholds we pass between the two states are what resonate in our bodies. Those experiences are the stories we pass on. Yet, some of the most
sacred spaces in the world have become mere subjects behind the lens of a camera. Technology has empowered our ability to reach marvels, yet it has provided layers now inherently filtered onto our experiences. How real are these thresholds we long to pass if they are experienced only through electronic devices? The
sacred experiences I treasure the most were given life through movement: movement of time, light, and the elements, none of which I would trade for a photograph. The following pages trace my imagination of a place where we take a step back through the door we barely noticed. Instead of looking for the
sacred, we journey through the profane. We celebrate the threshold.

▼ This exegesis examines the role of religious and spiritual influence on works by jazz composers as related to my composition, Requiem: a Suite of Jazz Orchestra, a jazz suite based on the Requiem Mass. The exegesis details the Catholic origins of the Requiem and the Mass as musical forms and traces their lineages into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as concert works and memorials not bound by liturgical function. These forms and their lineages frame the development of both religious and religion-inspired musical works in the cultural climate of 1960s America. In particular, I focus on two composers, Mary Lou Williams and Duke Ellington, both of whom composed large-scale
sacred works related to the jazz idiom. This project situates religion, primarily Catholicism, and spirituality in the context of jazz composition, and discusses music composed in this vein, including my own work influenced by the Catholic liturgical tradition.

▼ D.Arch. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2016.
The spirit of a place is an important element among communities, especially in those cultures that have a strong connection with the cosmos. Many ancient civilizations used the stars as referential in the placement of their structures and performing spiritual rituals among those spaces, such as the Egyptians aligning their Giza pyramid with the Orion star constellation. In The Orion Mystery: Unlocking the Secrets of the Pyramids, Robert Bauval discovers that the pyramid location had a strong connection between the dead king Osiris and the constellation of Orion.1 The importance of why the Egyptians did this was reflected in Bauval’s theory that there was spiritual knowledge that enlightened the pyramid builders, creating a portal between earth and the heavens. Similarly, the ancient Hawaiians have placed and built most of their temples, or heiau, to align with the sun's solstice and equinox at strategic locations.
Globally, there are many ancient structures that are aligned with the celestial sky, taking examples from the Forbidden City in China, to the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal. Most of these monuments themselves were built for the rulers but also functioned as a civic space that invoked a central power. In the contemporary built environment, the notion of a civic space has evolved into an extension of a community, becoming a public realm of cultural activities and knowledge. The question arises: Do these spaces invoke a traditional and cultural perspective of the indigenous culture? Case studies such as the Uluru Kata-Tjuta Cultural Center in Australia, describes the importance of indigenous
culture integration within a civic space. The recognition of native culture is mostly absent in today's perception of the built environment, especially in Hawai`i. This project attempts reconciliation between traditional Hawaiian knowledge of spatial elements, cultural significance, and the tangible and intangible structure of a heiau, and align it with
the modern civic space. Methods that accomplish these tasks include historical research, interviews, logical argumentation and case studies. The resulting collective data establishes a set of programs for designing a Hawaiian civic space.

▼ The study of musical hermeneutics, i.e. the search for finding congeneric and exogeneric meaning in music, has seen a resurgence in recent years, drawing on earlier work by McLaughlin, Coker, Kivy, and Cone. The songs of Hugo Wolf, inspired and molded by the text, lend themselves to hermeneutical study. Neumeyer and Komar have expanded Schenker’s ideas of organic structure to apply them across multi-movement works and song cycles to show the organic unity found within. Wolf’s Spanisches Liederbuch is often casually referred to as a “cycle,” but it does not fit the schema we traditionally hold for cycles in that the book as a whole does not follow one common thread. The first ten songs deal with sacred themes, the rest with worldly subjects. This study examines the ten Geistliche Lieder as a narrative song cycle. Within the sacred songs there is a cyclical thread to be found: in them, Wolf traces the redemption of mankind through the nativity, incarnation, suffering, and death of Christ that garnered man’s salvation. This paper looks at the sacred songs to find and understand this story as it is conveyed in both the text and the music in order to understand how each can inform our interpretations of the other, and to show how Wolf creates an organic unity among the entire “cycle” of sacred songs.

▼ In designing a
sacred space, the work should be a product not only of the mechanics of the mind but also a response of the heart, and therefore the spirit or soul that an architect must possess. For the soul is the harmony between the two. This is what gets diffused into the work, the subjectivity of which gives it its reality. The work too can then become animate with soul. Mircea Eliade believed that through symbols, the world becomes transparent and transcendence becomes visible. The religious man therefore relies on symbols to recognize
sacred reality. â Divine work always preserves its quality of transparency, that is it spontaneously reveals the many aspects of the
sacred,â which is why the very existence of the cosmic system and everything within presents itself as a proof of divine presence.1 For the construction of a sanctuary, the goal is to be able to perceive what is
sacred in the mundane, and then bringing it forth, extracting it, distinguishing it to be experienced sensually.
Sacred architecture is what identifies and then exposes these hierophanies.
The site is located on the intersection of Pennsylvania Ave NW and 26th ST NW in Washington DC. For the design development, the story of the first revelation of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is used as a narrative through the project. His search for meaning and retreat into nature, teaches of Islamic monasticism, the path that leads completely inward to a place with no one but God.
â Every road will lead you to this sense of initiation â the light, the secret, are hidden in the place from which you set out. You are on your way not toward the end of the road but toward its beginning; to go is to return; to find is to rediscover.â 2

▼ In many ancient societies,
sacred groves were an essential aspect of life. In some cases, these groves encompass a large territory; in other cases they may be a few trees. These groves originated in the time following the introduction of agriculture. When societies evolving,
sacred groves became not a piece of nature, but an institution that depending on custom, agriculture, and even the cycles of life.
Sacred groves are a legacy for everyone. These
sacred groves may reflect the culture of society, they are not merely symbols but dynamic and complex landscapes created as settings for specific functions. These
sacred groves serve not only as totems of worship, but as moments or places where people purify their souls.
Sacred groves surrounding or covering burial grounds have existed widely throughout the world (Tuan, Y. 1977). In many burial sites,
sacred groves dominate the landscape. They serve the spiritual needs of the living as well as keep alive memories of the dead. This thesis will discuss the method to make a grove
sacred and develop a landscape to provide an opportunity for people to get a sense of their life and culture. The concept is to reinstate the connection between burial grounds and neighborhoods by creating neighborhood cemeteries in the local parks of Arlington, Virginia. Through thoughtful site selection and design,
sacred groves can hold precious information about the history of communities for generations.

▼ The Light in the Wilderness was the first
sacred choral work of renowned jazz legend, Dave Brubeck. At the time of its premier in 1968 he was 47 years old and known only as a jazz pianist. It was the success of this piece that led to the composition of seventeen major choral works, seven choral fugues, more than sixty-five miscellaneous vocal compositions, and more than forty-two chorale/anthems. After breaking up his most famous quartet–including Paul Desmond, Joe Morello, and Eugene Wright–Brubeck dedicated himself to writing large-scale “Classical” compositions. Although his jazz trio/quartet performance break was short lived, his compositional output was considerable. The premier performance of The Light in the Wilderness received tremendous success and was soon taken on tour in Europe. A thorough analysis of this work reveals a creative sense of text driven thematic and formal development using a variety of compositional constructs.
This document will provide a conductor’s analysis of the historical and musical material surrounding Brubeck’s oratorio, The Light in the Wilderness. Some analyses of this composition and other related material exists. This document expands and analyzes anew the work and provide a framework for a pedagogical approach to its preparation and performance. Correspondence with the Brubeck family and those who worked closely with Dave Brubeck contributes insights into the compositional mind of the composer and the musical commentary that he imbued on the scriptural text that was set.
The Light in the Wilderness is a stunning composition that demonstrates Dave Brubeck’s expansive compositional breadth. Brubeck makes use of quintal harmonies, tone rows, modal melodies, polyrhythms, polytonality, and chromaticism throughout. He uses jazz style and harmony, world music, and improvised meditations. With all of these constructs in place Brubeck still manages to uniformly align his message and take the listener on a coherent journey through the temptations and teachings of Christ. Brubeck should be recognized for his significant contribution to the twentieth-century American choral-orchestral repertoire.

▼ This research explores the cultural politics of devithans (Nepali
sacred groves) in the eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim, India. The proliferation of devithans in the village of Biring, East Sikkim, reveals the contestations and appropriations around the symbolic value of
sacred sites. In a context where worship of nature has become critical for different ethnic groups to validate political and cultural claims to Sikkim’s
sacred landscape, devithans are a potential “political instrument” (Sithole, 2004:132). They not only satiate the “quest for belonging” (Geschiere, 2009:1) for the Nepalis, whose cultural associations with Sikkim’s
sacred landscape remain invisibilized, but also become symbolic of their claim to autochthony, as much as the Buddhist Lepcha-Bhutias.
Sacred grove scholarship in India, predominantly anchored in the language of ecology, tends to locate their sustainability in past traditions and reasons for their decline in the politics of today. By using a cultural politics lens to understand devithans, I problematize such simplistic narratives. I argue that such narratives shift focus away from present day cultural politics internal to communities that often not only sustain them, but also help them to proliferate. Nevertheless, agreeing that there is an inherent sublimity to devithans that “eludes the grasp of systematic and objective knowledge” (Ivakhiv, 2003: 25), I keep my analysis of
sacred landscapes open, acknowledging the polyphony that constitutes it.

један храм extra muros (in cimiterio). Наглашена је и вероватна
убикација архиепископског седишта Iustiniana Prima на локалитету
Царичин град, а тиме и значајно место овог некада утицајног града и
његове топографије у читавом Царству.

▼ The objective of this dissertation is to explore the meanings, significance, and functions of sacred space developed in the Hebrew Bible. A wide range of categories, models, and geographical forms of biblical sacred space will be presented: the cosmos, Mt. Zion, the Land of Israel, Jerusalem, the Temple, the Tabernacle, sanctuaries and sacred sites, the high places, and the micro-scales of cultic installations, such as the Ark, altars, sacred poles, and sacred pillars. From a biblical point of view, the two realms of the sacred and the profane co-exist. The sanctity of a place can be restricted and intensified to a certain zone of space or micro-scales of cultic installations. It can also be extended to a wider scope of space, such as the entire sanctuary, the entire city, the entire land, or the cosmos.
These models of sacred space used in the biblical texts reflect the manifestation of the specific worldview that is governed by the concept of holiness and the particular concepts of God associated with the notions of divine dwelling presence, divine glory, and divine rest. The Israelite model of sacred space emphasized in a particular biblical text can also represent related transformations of the functions, meanings, and significance of the concepts of sacred space. For instance, the establishment of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem signifies the transformation of the legitimate place of worship in ancient Israelite religion, from a dynamic model to a permanent, static one. Its meanings, significance, and functions are now contingent upon the fixed location in Jerusalem.
This dissertation provides evidence of the plurality of meanings, significance, and functions of the concepts of sacred space in the Hebrew Bible. This exploration of the biblical concepts of sacred space includes a discussion of various issues: defining forms, sources of sanctity, rules of access and boundaries, and contexts and uses of biblical sacred space. The exploration also includes consideration of the distinctive intentions of various biblical writers and their perspectives on geographical and spatial realities.

(1633-76) and his place in the history of the city of Leipzig and
its famous Thomaskirche. Knüpfer served as the
cantor of the Thomasschule and city music
director from 1657 to his death in 1676, which places him in a
storied lineage that includes such eminent composers as Johann
Hermann Schein (1586-1630) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).
Yet, even though his place in the history of the city and one of
the city’s two principal churches is well-established, his music
remains virtually unknown, particularly in the United States. To
date, only a handful of Knüpfer’s one-hundred twenty known works
are available in modern performing editions, and only a handful of
recordings of his works have been produced worldwide. Moreover,
analytical models for his music are extremely underdeveloped. The
general lack of attention to Knüpfer’s work has obscured his
rightful place in history as a master of the
sacred vocal concerto,
the dominant genre of
sacred music in the seventeenth
century. To begin to remedy this dearth of study
on the music of Knüpfer, I examine a small portion of his oeuvre,
the Latin psalm concertos, in the broad context of his entire
output, in order to draw out the salient stylistic features of his
musical language. From among this collection of works, I closely
examine one Latin psalm concerto, Super flumina
Babylonis, from the perspective of musical language and
theological content. Close analysis of this work demonstrates
Knüpfer’s exertion of formal control in the
sacred vocal concerto
as a means of managing dramatic narrative while at the same time
suggesting his own theological perspective. My analytical approach
further demonstrates the necessity for more focused attention on
Knüpfer’s individual compositions and groups of works in the same
genre, and for studies that compare his works to the
sacred vocal
concertos of other prominent composers of the period. Finally, I
provide a modern performing edition of Knüpfer’s Super
flumina with a critical commentary.

▼ In religious geography, anthropology, and other
fields, Mircea Eliade’s sacred-profane dichotomy continues to be
influential in the study of sacred space and sacred architecture.
However, the limitations of this dichotomy become apparent when it
is applied to North American Indigenous religious traditions. This
thesis therefore compares and contrasts Eliade’s definitions and
theories of sacredness, and specifically his notions of sacred
geography, with those of various North American Indigenous
traditions. The objective is an expanded definition of sacred space
based on the relational or ecological model, which I have derived
from these traditions. In this model, sacredness is not seen as
separate from the natural world, but rather the natural world
itself is considered inherently sacred.

▼ Circumambulation is a universal cultural phenomenon.
In Tibetan society, it is not only a particularly religious
practice, but also the ritual embodiment of the Tibetan ethos. This
research examines the types of circumambulation and their symbolic
meanings in Tibet. Through specific expressions in ethnographic
accounts of circumambulation based on field study and literature
review, two core elements of circumambulation are identified: a
center of sacredness, and circular movement around this center. By
analysis of the concept of sacredness and the symbolic meanings of
the circle and circular movement, I establish a concentric circular
model of circumambulation to interpret it in the Tibetan context. I
use the concept of sacred gravitation to explore the relationship
between sacredness and people as expressed in the form of
circumambulation and how circumambulation acts as the symbolic
medium in this relationship.

▼ Increasingly, tourists and tourism companies are incorporating sacred places into their travel plans and iteneraries. While pilgrimage, in a religious sense, has occurred for centuries, many people travel to sacred sites for pleasure or spectacle. Given the lack of emperical research surrounding the impacts of this tourism to, and tourists at, sacred places, this thesis attempts to fill this void. The focus of the research involed investigating the impacts of tourist visitation to sacred places in New Zealand and the key research question asked ‘what impacts does tourist visitation to sacred places have on those for whom the place is sacred?’ In order to address this question, the research employed qualitative methods including in-depth interviews with local worshipping communities, a mapping exercise, observations, and photography at two sacred places. The two case study sites are located in Canterbury, New Zealand; both are Christian Churches. Rich data identified clear results surrounding impacts identified by the worshipping communities. Further to this, extra, valuable findings emerged from the data. The results of the research are discussed in relation to relevant literature and theory including, meaning and spirit of place, carrying capacity, tourist typologies, consumption of place, commercialisation and commodification of place and relevant practice literature. Within their current situations at the sacred places, the worshipping communities have developed coping strategies in reaction to tourism to, and tourists at, their place. The research, therefore, creates a rich picture of the impacts of tourism to, and tourists at, sacred sites within New Zealand. This picture may assist management strategies and policy as well as furthering the objectives of the sacred places and expanding the literature surrounding the topic.

▼ Rejecting the prior essentialist assumptions connected with the classical notions of the
sacred, this dissertation argues for the redefinition of this concept and its use as an analytical tool. Religion, too, should no longer be held as a privileged space for the emergence of the
sacred. The
sacred is held not to be a numinous phenomenon experienced privately, a universal term, or of an unchangeable structure. Instead, it is a relative and temporary category constructed through certain cultural practices, which helps us disclose the concepts of meaning, identity and community. Such a redefined notion can be applied when speaking about contemporary culture and literature.
This dissertation presents Russian writer Victor Pelevin as a case study, demonstrating the possibility to speak of the
sacred in the seemingly secular post-Soviet milieu. It provides insights into the role of the
sacred in his works and introduces new possible approaches towards his writings and his position in Russian literature. Moreover, the analysis of Pelevin’s works shows that this redefined understanding of the
sacred is productive not only in his writings, but also in general in the studies of sacrality in the postmodern world, making this post-Soviet
sacred a more extensive concept, applicable in a wide variety of contexts.

▼ As the presence of devices that connect to the Internet becomes more and more ubiquitous, the world has adapted itself to accommodate the changes these devices bring. That world, however, is appearing more and more bleak for those who live there. Many people are trying to find ways of freeing themselves from their devices because of the constant need to be available to the workaday world. While other disciplines offer their contributions, it is necessary for the Church to speak of the liberating offer that comes from friendship with Christ. Josef Pieper devoted his life to handing down the Western Christian tradition to his contemporaries in a way that they could understand. Along with other insights, he exposed the vice of acedia that quietly removed God’s joy-giving presence from the world. In the wake of modernity’s sadness, he argued, people were desperately searching for entertaining distractions. Opposed to this, he suggested that the Church offers the festive celebration of God’s redeeming work in creation. In this study, I draw from Pieper’s thoughts to show the vice of acedia that lurks behind people’s digital devices, enslaving them within the workaday world, unless they consciously act against this vice. By encouraging people to live a life formed by the celebration of sacred feasts, Pieper’s Christian teachings continue to set people free from this imprisonment.

▼ This social commentary aims to examine a semiotic study of Sindoor or Vermilion (a red colour
powder) which is applied between hair partings by married Hindu Indian women. Sindoor is
applied by the groom to the bride on the day of the marriage. By applying Sindoor, she is then
considered to be his wife and enters the matrimonial life. The social commentary intends to shed
light on the feminist and sociological aspect of Sindoor in Indian society and how it is celebrated
by Hindu married women, yet it place the women lower in the social gender hierarchy as they are
often socially expected to wear such symbols to mark a new beginning. On the other hand, married
Hindu men wear no such markings to show their married status.

▼ This thesis explores how religion is being represented, interpreted, and discussed in Canadian museums. It draws from a sample of thirty-one semi-structured interviews with curators and museum professionals and from the author’s own observations of fifty-one museums in eleven provinces and territories across Canada to explore the themes of space, power, and identity as they relate to religion in Canadian museums. Using the theories of sacred space created by Knott, this thesis explores how Canadian museums are capable of becoming sacred spaces based on their ability to give visitors numinous experiences, to act as contested spaces, and to serve as a location of religion. Canadian museums are powerful, as argued by Bourdieu and Foucault, by their very nature as places that produce and define knowledge, through claims to objectivity and an emphasis on a progress narrative, giving museums (and curators) power to define what is and is not religious by deciding whether and how to discuss the religious aspects of an artefact, object, or culture. Within the context of these two themes, museums enact Ricoeur’s theory of narrative identity by telling stories about different groups in order to create and communicate their identities. Some museums present a homogenous Canadian identity based on white mainline Christian identity while others explore the complexity of Canadian identity by telling the stories of non-mainstream religious or ethnic groups and their participation in Canadian history. Aboriginal peoples in Canada have become involved in the display of their traditions in larger museums and have started creating their own museums and cultural centres where their voices can take precedence.

▼ In this project I explore the relationship of
sacred citizenship as an alternative and at times overlapping form of politics to national citizenship.
Sacred citizenship creates a possibility of belonging for marginalized identities in Caribbean and Caribbean diasporic women’s writing. All the novels examined in this project, Cristina García’s Monkey Hunting (2004), Shani Mootoo’s Cereus Blooms at Night (2001), Patricia Powell’s The Pagoda (1998), Mayra Montero’s The Red of His Shadow (2001), Ana-Maurine Lara’s Erzulie’s Skirt (2006), and Daína Chaviano’s The Island of Eternal Love (2008), depict protagonists that practice restricted versions of national citizenship. Due to varying degrees of marginality, the protagonists, therefore, construct alternative and qualitative citizenship practices. Belonging through
sacred citizenship strikes a balance among acknowledging the materiality of the body, how one produces sacral spaces for the self, and the physical, spiritual and psychological crossings that push against long-standing epistemic frameworks of being and understanding. All the novels share a common investment in challenging linear and dominant histories that marginalize subjects. By introducing complex temporalities pregnant with sacral opportunities, the novels critique earlier discourses written on historical experiences and invest value in intimate acts usually abjected by dominant society. All the sacral moments experienced during flexible temporalities allow the protagonists to imagine inter-subjective belonging and transpersonal coalition through physical, gendered and sexual crossings as well as cosmological and mystical practices.

▼ Sacred space is common to almost every religion in the world. A sacred space
is a place set apart from a secular space for holy use. In this study, two classifications
of sacred spaces have been given, the natural and the man-made, but this study is
focused on the man-made sacred spaces. Particularly, the study seeks to examine the
Ghanaian Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches’ understanding of sacred space regarding
their places of worship. This is against the backdrop of the proliferation and acclaimed
growth of Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches (PCCs) in Ghana.
This is a phenomenological study of PCCs places of worship (sacred space) on
the Spintex Road and Abeka Lapaz areas in Accra. The methods of data collection
employed were interviews, observations and participant observations, photography and
a review of published literature.
The study found out that the Ghanaian PCCs’ understanding of sacred space is
any space ‘set aside’ through visions and dreams. These spaces are then claimed by the
‘visionaries’ and ‘dreamers’ (leaders) and consecrated as sacred spaces for worship.
The study identified 63 places of worship out of which the researcher classified into
tents, pave, rented, house/community, events centres and megachurches. Some of these
churches can be found in very close proximity, both within residential and commercial
areas with more PCC churches springing up monthly. This helps to explain the claim
of PCCs to the growth of Christianity in Ghana. The research recommends that future
studies on PCCs actual membership (and not the number of churches/places of worship)
be done to get the real data of PCCs contribution to Christianity in Ghana. The study
also recommends that Town and Country Planning Authorities should ensure that PCCs
follow the laid down processes of securing land titles for their places of worship.

▼ The Purbeck Review of Schools, initiated by Dorset County Council in 2008, resulted in the closure of the middle school in Swanage, leaving the town bereft of secondary education by July 2013. A community-led group, Education Swanage, founded a new school in the town, which opened in September 2013 as a free school, with a humanscale ethos. Although there was controversy about free schools at the time, there is no research to date about how personal values influence the founding of such a school. This research answers the question how did values influence the founding of The Swanage School? This inductive research was informed by literature on the conceptualization of ‘values’ and the ‘sacred’ and delimited by theoretical insights from practical theology, living theory and human-scale education. The action research strategy, set within a paradigm of praxis, addressed how values influenced action in founding the school. Semistructured interviews, an online survey and a validation group were used to discover how values influenced practice. The data revealed a variety of interpretations of the term ‘values’, which were most commonly alluded to as being central in guiding and informing everyday interaction in the world and relating to how humans respond to others whilst also being a reflection of personal identity. The research identified areas of practice where the interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic values was influential when operating in contradiction and congruence to affect change. Analysis of the findings enabled conclusions and propositions to be developed, which focused on how values influenced the process of moving from contradiction to congruence in order to enact change. Values were a significant influence in the founding of The Swanage School. When values were contradicted they acted as standards of judgement and formed the basis of conversations which led to problems being solved and decisions being made. Concepts from the wider literature and the field of practical theology provided insight into how values can be defined and how their influence on action can be interpreted as an encounter with the sacred. The conclusion of this study and its contribution to knowledge is the explanation of how values influenced the founding of The Swanage School in the form of a living educational theory.

▼ Fingarette thinks what is sacred in Confucianism is the element of human civilization modeled upon holy rite. Eno claims the holiness of Confucian ritual consist in its coherence with cosmic reality, Heaven. But both of them didn't think metaphysics is one intellectual focus for early Confucianism. Nevertheless, we think only in reference to a Confucian metaphysics which provides a sufficient exposition of the most generic features of cosmic reality, what is sacred in Confucianism can be fully clarified.
Due to his unflinchingly sociological methodology, Berger's concept of religion as sacred canopy is partial and limited. His concept of "chaos" can't encompass all the cases in world religions, and his understanding of the holy as "the wholly other" deviates from its original expression in Rudolf Otto. Contributing to the innovation of Berger's idea of sacred canopy, Neville thinks religion is human engagement with ultimacy, and one of the most important functions of sacred canopy is cognitive, to know ultimate reality. Keeping to Neville's understanding of sacred canopy, we will analyze two key texts of classical Confucian metaphysics, Yijing and its "Great Treatise"(系辞), to try to illustrate what a Confucian sacred canopy is.
Traditionally, shengsheng (生生) is understood as ceaseless creative advance into novelty, a most generic description of cosmic reality in Confucian metaphysics, but this understanding can't include the ultimate ontological creation of the world from nothing by ultimate polarity, which is also enunciated by Great Treatise. In relation to the Decision of Hexagram Qian, we can furthermore parse out four possible ways to understand shengsheng: to create creatures, to create this and to create that, this creates and that creates, and creatures create. They correspond to the four characters in the decision: initiation (元), permeation (亨), harmonization (利) and integration (贞), and indicate early Confucians' reflections about the ontological traits of ultimate reality: Heaven is the initiative, permeative, harmonious and integral creation. Heaven creates being from non-being, initiates the world as a ceaseless creative process; it creates everything, imparts creativity and form into every creature; and then every formed creature itself strives for being and creation in a dynamical relationship with each other. Based upon such a "cosmontology", a Confucian sacred canopy will be finally outlined and the importance of ritual in reference to that canopy will also be illuminated.

▼ The Black Hills of South Dakota, once home to the Lakota Sioux, is a
sacred landscape to these people, but is currently threatened by extensive tourism, mining, industrial and logging activity. Within these
sacred hills, an enormous carving in stone is slowly being created in the form of a Lakota warrior: the Crazy Horse Memorial. The carving is meant to honour all American Indian people, as well as Crazy Horse’s people, the Lakota; however, the carving is contested by many Lakota people as it clashes with their spiritual beliefs and traditions. In this practicum, the social, environmental and spiritual character of the Black Hills is studied to determine the efficacy of the Crazy Horse Memorial in contemporary Lakota society, and to determine a more appropriate form of memorialization for the Lakota people.
Sacred landscapes throughout the Black Hills are evaluated based on their management practices and current environmental and spiritual states; subsequently, a new regional management strategy is introduced in order to protect traditional
sacred sites and preserve traditional Lakota landscapes and traditions. In so doing, the involvement of Landscape Architects is presented as a viable strategy in evolving the cultural and physical landscape of the
sacred Black Hills.
